boots over 5k and he's a 1304 5000 meter runner as well so these two going really well and it's not just the fact that they're in first and second if they finish in some regard in this order whoever's first and whoever second they would have taken some massive scouts especially in the form of say galen ruck the olympic marathon bronze medalist from rio and bashar abdi the olympic marathon bronze medalist from tokyo so they've got some world-class performers trailing in their metaphorical wake at the moment but they're both looking sprightly aren't they robbed look at it a nice little bounce from scott on the left and cesarec on the right on the great south run over that 10 mile distance in 2019 mark scott likes the great run series of events youngest of triplets by the way by two minutes but he's putting in a good shift here there's the second group to break where those four athletes there and both rut and abdi are in that quartet but stuart mcswain is not stewie mcswain was stepping up he hadn't raced more than 14k the track specialist until today but rupp is leading those chasers at the moment and this is a group if it stays the way it is a group that'll be battling for third it's interesting isn't it rob galen you know one of those athletes we've talked about who's made the transition from the track was good on the track let's not forget olympic silver in 2012 over 10 000 meters behind his then training partner mo farah former winner of course of this event but he's transferred nicely hasn't he onto the roads and he's he's looking good here abdi's in the mix as well as you mentioned but the two leaders cesarec now looking over his shoulder seeing your obery style have a loss have i lost him i've lost him no you haven't mark scott's still there as they cross the bridge and by the way it was emil caress who was up with that group along with jake smith caress making his debut that's the battle for third they've got two miles to go i agree with you catherine mark scott is looking very very smooth in well he's not in second place it's joint first as they run side by side here edward cesarec multiple ncaa titles scott has also enjoyed great success running over in the us he's the second fastest in history as far as britain is concerned over the 10 000 meters with that 27-10 over in san juan also ran well indoors in phoenix over 3000 meters so both these guys have had great performances in the united states and scott now dictating the momentum and how about that it's almost a a bank of spectators under that overpass he's really going for it to britain here what a story this would be what a great shot that is look at that under the tunnel in darkness the silhouette of two athletes who could potentially win this men's elite race in the great north run this year maybe this is the finish that was like 2013 and mo farah and kennenisa katie that went down in history we didn't get it with oberyn mccolgan because helen o'birri put a foot down but here we go mark scott now taking charge in the final stages what has cesarec got left he's looking a little bit laboured for me the kenyan athletes i agree with you catherine this is a this is a bold move from mark scott but if you're looking at the body language of the two it's good news as far as the britain is concerned he's really set his mark out here cesarec is still there but mark scott make no mistake he's a very confident athlete on the roads as well as off the track and he will believe this is his title to take and what a list of champions he will join i mean it's absolutely i was checking this out i was doing my homework yesterday this is unequivocally a who's who of distance running greats carlos lopez of portugal won it in 1983 an olympic champion from from l.a d costello the world marathon champion from 1983 in helsinki john tracy a world cross country champion an olympic silver medalist over the marathon mona getty the australian commonwealth champion tagwani of south africa won it in 98 two years after becoming olympic marathon champion turgatz won it one of the distance running greats over the ten thousand tedesse the brilliant world half marathon runner and not to mention gabriel selassie for kaylee and mo farah those are the men he's hoping to join as a great north run champion this is huge for mark scott if he can keep it going well the last six titles of the great north run have gone to samoa farah the british start so potentially mark scott is going to keep the british flag flying in terms of victories here there's the gap in terms of the leaders but smith now taking charge of this second group with this breakaway galen rock not having any of it making sure he's back in the mix and coming on the shoulder of smith and he looks to me as though bashir abdi has allowed a meter or so to grow between himself and the trio who are chasing third at the moment but that gap is the one between mark scott and edward cesarec and i think it's getting bigger scott can sense blood here he's trying to pull away for what would unequivocally be one of the greatest victories of his career well it's his third crack at a half marathon mark scott his previous two attempts coming in 2019 and 2020 but he has the potential over this 13.1 mile distance of course having excelled at the five and the ten thousand meter distance yorkshire born athlete of course representing the british team in tokyo six in that ten thousand meter final and it's always impressive mark scott not in terms sometimes of major performances and times which just always performs well he's solid and this could be a huge victory for the british athlete and speaking of british athletes catherine what an attempt for third this is from jake smith the two olympic bronze medalists over the marathon are really having to work hard to stay with him galen rupp is in fourth we've got bashir abdi just drifting off the back and don't forget as well emile caress from leeds city former european under 23 bronze medalist over 10 000 meters he's still in the mix for third but scott needs to keep this going cesarec is just about hanging on here with a roundabout what is it four maybe three and a half minutes of running to go i think he might be closing that gap you know the kenyan he might well the noise from the supporters they'll be there for a few hours of course waiting for friends and family to complete their half marathon scott has a quick look over his shoulder he looks good rob my days this is brilliant running by mark scott and this is what i meant he's always impressive he always looks good he ran the two-mile event at the eugene diamond league just a few weeks ago he wasn't in the top ten didn't have the turn of pace that he needed over the two-mile distance there but now we're seeing why because you're moving him up to 13.1 miles and he is just like a metronome look at him he's just going he's controlled he's looking comfortable is it the time for mark scott to win the great north run or has edward cesarec the kenyan got anything left what's that 30 meters 35 meters he's not out of it yet but he does need to start closing that gap very soon i thought perhaps from the front on motorbike shot we got an indication that maybe he was closing a fraction but i agree with him i think if you look at the body language and the cadence of the two athletes scott looks really strong here and he's not as thin as you might expect he's a very uh you know he's got good upper body strength as well bashir after he's off the back of this group it's rock caress and jake smith the american against the two britons in the battle for third here and rupp's really feeling it he's grimacing and he's really working oh did he just did he just reach down there for his left hip could have been something of nothing but perhaps he's experiencing a little bit of discomfort with smith and caress still right on his shoulder in the battle to complete the podium of this year's great north run it's not looking particularly comfortable is he galen rupp but it's hard to tell after about 12 miles whether he's actually just getting a little bit tired and winston or he's actually got a problem but one person that doesn't have a problem and is looking as cool as a cucumber is mark scott high arm carriage nice and bouncy you'll probably do another little check in a minute to see where cesarec is and you just mentioned that about body language and we were talking about how positive he looks there was a telltale glance over the shoulder from edward cheserec because galen rupp and smith and caress are not that far behind him and i think that look over the shoulder as we go up this little incline tells you he's now trying to make sure of second place and i think mark scott's got this now yep when you start looking over your shoulder it's because you're worried about who could be coming behind you but mark scott with less than 800 meters to go has ran this superbly still see the bright shirt of cesarec of course he's still he's he's not out of it but that telltale sign of looking over his shoulder rob means that you know what i don't know what i've got left in the tank here but smith oh jake smith coached by james think he's come on so much in the last few years this british athlete he's absolutely having the race of his life rob trying to hold on to him now caress looks like he's spent and dropped off the back of this group but another wince though from rock this is a great run from jake smith he's trying to beat a double olympic medalist who's made a fabulous transfer from track to road and that is exactly what mark scott is doing here for himself and for great britain he's pulling away from a superb field here and now he knows that gap is big enough and he's closing in on what without any shadow of a doubt be one of the greatest victories of his career following in a long line of world-class winners he's going to be just outside his pb but it won't matter it's who he will have beaten to this title that indicates he's taking a step up here what a glittering glittering list of men he is about to join some of the all-time greats have come to newcastle to win the world's biggest most prestigious half marathon and great north run 40 is being won by a real showman mark scott asking the crowd to respond to give him more glances over his shoulder he can afford to ease up and savor every second of this what a victory for the briton mark scott with one of the performances of his life 61 minutes of pure tactical perfection he is the great north run champion in 2021 four decades of history and he has his name to a rich list of champions second place for edward cesarec and what a battle for third galen rupp just about holding off the advances of jake smith who's running a fabulous race in fourth but it's the double olympic medalist galen ruff of the united states who completes the podium with third he had to work really hard for that jake smith a fabulously brave fourth place emile caress brilliant debut for him in fifth and bashir abdi the olympic marathon bronze medalist from a month ago will come home in sixth completing the first half dozen what a race though what a story of what a win for great britain's mark scott and he did it with a swagger over the last hundred meters fantastic run fantastic victory brilliant a fully deserved bottle of water dehan coming across the line and there's mcswain as well after he was in the mix early doors but we've already mentioned it's the third this he's ever run but he's finishing a half marathon here at the great north run but at the bottom of his shot there mark scott and i mentioned it was his third crack at a half marathon and what a crack it was absolutely brilliant a superb victory continuing the british dominance in the great north run since mo farah first won it back in september 2014. but that was good that was really good that's a confidence booster isn't it that's uh something on your cv rob as you say that is a very very impressive credential as the top three have the photograph taken enjoyed that very very good men's elite race good story for mark scott ruth battled brilliantly for third excellent second place finish for cesarec so runner-up spot for him so one half of the future mr and mrs cesarec on the podium with his fiance sharon locketty finishing in fourth but that's a great one two three but some wonderful results and some great performances here's a confirmation of who did what mark scott with arguably the biggest victory of his career beating edward cesarec off kenya galen rupp had to work very hard for third ahead of jake smith and the debutant emile curtis who was fifth bashir abdi the olympic bronze medalist in the marathon just outside 62 minutes for sixth callum johnson completed the top 10 in 64-36 helen o'beary a marvelous victory for her but how she was pushed all the way by elish mccolgan brilliant runner-up finish for the daughter of the woman who's won this title three times charlotte purdue a very spirited sub 69-minute performance for third sharon lockhart just off the podium in fourth and then in terms of the elite men's wheelchair sean frame dominant 49 52 a british one two three frame leading home lawson and hall in that event and shelley woods once again just over 57 minutes great north run winner jade hall in second a good day for britain in the wheelchair races you
