2014 Pagani Huayra - Jay Leno's Garage

believe oh forget about this okay there's a cop right there so we're not gonna get on the on-ramp today welcome to the episode of Jay Leno's Garage very special car today of 2014 Pagani Huayra now if you're not familiar with Pagani this is uh I don't get any more Italian than this you know there are engineers and then there are designers but there are very few designers that are also engineers and horacio pagani is certainly in that category I mean not only is your beautifully engineered car it is fantastically designed the amount of detail that goes into building this vehicle will show you interior and you'll see the way the gauges are all handmade even these mirrors here I mean it just it's thinking differently it's thinking like an artist and then combining your engineering skills to actually make it work because when you see a lot of vehicles that are put together by designers they don't really work in the real world the real trick is taking that design and Turkey and turning it into something functional fast reliable all the things we want in an automobile and this mirror here is just a classic example of the Pagani style we were fortunate enough to have mr. Pagani here it's a garage and although he he doesn't speak English I understood exactly what he was saying because he was able to to convey his thoughts and his ideas to me and well here here's a little bit of that video be permitted you know contact him for real okay la philosophy another company he'd like to describe a little bit the philosophy behind Pagani yes even when from a very young age he's always had a incredible passion for cars starting when he's very young he was always already making little designs out of in a balsa wood and so when when he was young I was trying to understand whether to follow a more scientific path or a more artistic one when he was 13 or 14 years old you read an article in an American magazine Reader's Digest he believes where he learned about though not of the Vinci who combined art with science and that sort of gave him an inspiration as to you know where he where he wanted to go with this easily and now da Vinci never had to design his art around government regulations so that's what makes him the newly another dimension revista temporarily senior you know when you build the house often you have an architect designs the house and then you give it to a contractor who builds the house and the architect designer maybe isn't aware of all the technical or practical issues that the contractor builder has to deal with and that can cause issues at Pagani the design team is a kind of a hybrid between designers and engineers and so the same team starts from a blank sheet of paper and then designs the whole car and that helps you know and trigger that and like I said yeah and you can tell him to me I love the idea that is one man's vision of what a car should be so it remains pure all the way through you know so many cars don't look like anything because the input from this input than that everybody everybody has their say when you have one person this is what I want this is the way I want to build it that's what I like I like that that's singular focus on one idea one vision and you build the car and the car costs whatever it costs they get it right that's what I like it's an extremely small factory in Italy each car is hand-built this one belongs to our good friend David Lee David you might remember came here with Ferraris he let me drive his f40 which was the thrill of a lifetime and David is one of those collectors that really enjoys the cars it really uses the cars you know artists get a little annoyed in the comments section with people get mad or get jealous but you know David shares his cars with everybody he takes them to events I see kids sitting in him and he really helps move along what we're trying to do here at the garage bring him in David good to see you my friend AJ how you doing thanks for bringing this a fantastic yeah it's a 2014 but it's been upgraded right right right right there's a there's a thing that Horatio had after doing the BC which is the the other model who the Huayra BC had all these technology that they've developed as a performance upgrading so there's a what they call tempesta upgrade and that was a problem not enough performance really weren't going fast enough before so so what what is the horsepower now 730 horsepower 730 horsepower now the wheels are new correct yes the wheels are bigger they're now 20 and 21 do you must be 1920 out there lighter also the front splitter and the rear diffuser is is also more aggressive and change for more downforce the shocks because now it's changed the dynamics of the downforce the shock needed to be changed all the shocks were changed and the the whole titanium exhaust has been changed to an upgraded and when you order one of these you actually get to speak to mr. Pagani himself don't you you know that's the beauty of this whole situation yeah and I remember you were saying you know people used to talk to Enzo and you know it almost brought it back to like those days where you can really talk to Rachel and your Chinese and he's Italian I can't even read with it well you know he doesn't speak English right we text each other like almost every day and and I had to be really quick at the google translate oh that's funny very Italian okay so you ordered this car new back in the day correct actually a friend of mine ordered it oh and I and then he only had like a year and I he wanted to sell it and I bought it from from dealer that bought it from him so quickly got it I see well look at the beautiful carbon I mean you see the weave of the carbon fiber you know this is the way carbon fiber should look I hate the the matte-black look because there you go like this and then it makes a big stain in it whereas this you see the weave and then it's got the clear coat over it which is really beautiful and you see how consistent the weave is that's right that's the mark of a good but they call that the autoclave wasn't where they build it yeah and these are where in Italy of these built a Modena oh it is so he's right down the road from Ferrari he's right there I can hit both of the places in the same trip yeah and it's sort of like what you said the thing I like about Horatio is it's kind of like what Ferrari was back maybe the 50s and 60s it wasn't so big that there were hundreds of customers there they just people come and it's a small outfit and and you don't really get rich building these cars you know he's a true artist I mean obviously I'm sure he's doing very well but what I mean is it's not like you're turning out 1500 days a year he makes what three four years something like that and each one it is an individual work of art the dashboard even you know it's so easy just to silkscreen something and it looks fine but he actually has jewelers make these yeah I mean yeah I mean it's the attention to detail it's just unbelievable no doubt you know and you know of course one of my businesses being in jewelry and I really do appreciate I can see the difference of of what it is you know well you're on the watch business so that's he does fine watches Timex watch yeah and it's a you know this is the color I would order this exact you like that yeah it's just beautiful and then you have sort of the Italian theme here yeah it's it's also in the caliber brake calipers all right right very nice and tell people what wire it means it means the wind god so the god of wind and and ratios very much into that kind of mythological type of characters well this is you know what that means and again the tempesta means storm so with this upgrade storm upgrade and of course that's what the sound of the exhaust sounds like the fun part is when you park it somewhere and you see people try to pronounce it hey got a high regret it's a higher know what I mean well let's get into the tetanus of the car it's an AMG v12 correct how many litres six six liter six liter turbo twin-turbo yeah making 730 horsepower and the transmission as well the transmission is 7-speed a substantial of six inches right now it's not a it's not a dual clutch gearbox it's not that because the dual clutch was would have made it 150 pounds more heavier right so you decided to go with a single very good very good now and the real fascinating part and this is where Horatio's engineering takes over from the design it's the way these flaps work you know didn't have explained that so if this is a one only cars that have this dynamic aerodynamics that works with it so what happens in the front you see the two flaps and that creates more downforce in turns and what have you the back flaps go ahead and helps with like a braking if there's a braking situation helps like it's an air brake so those keep going on and off when you're driving at by itself knowing what it's supposed to do and it makes the whole car supposed to handle better yeah and the downforce the faster you go the more it handles yes I mean you know a lot of times it's 60 or 70 you can slide off the road but if you're going 120 the down force would be forcing the car to the ground yeah pretty amazing and this car can go 238 of according to Pagani Wow yeah tickets III have it cuz when I get the part police pulls you over I just home Jay Leno's friend oh yeah yeah that works yeah that works well one of the most controversial and fascinating aspects of the car is this mirror here because it sort of looks like a woman's eyelash that's telling ya the is very sexy and though the Italians have that great male-female component and you know because there's something to truly work it should have elements of both like the XKE is sort of feminine design but the haunches it has a masculinity to to so it appeals to both sexes you know you know when women see Jaguar XK oh my god I love that you know nothing about cars and the same as men let's can we open this open the door even the little door guys I mean I don't want to use the word bling because that that makes it sound like it's you're cheapening but the sense of automotive jewelry here is is unbelievable I mean look at the way this whole package is put together these beautiful seats oh yeah for sure I mean it's it's you look you know nowadays you're missing all the knobs and all the buttons and everything which which I know you like as well where we remember in the old cars but now you know it has all the levers and the pulleys and everything it's just just so much fun ya know it really is I mean there's still a sense of mechanical nough stew it now does this have traction control and you're like it's a you know the carbon ceramic brakes from Brembo and it has you know abs and all that stuff cuz 2014 automotive he's like a long time ago mm-hmm I mean it's really fine we were talking about this before I've got my Carrera GT you know with the manual gearbox and I called a Porsche dealer about some work I wanted done the guy goes yeah we don't really work on the old stuff okay 40 you get the idea what is this this is pretty much just just timeless it's just unbelievable I mean and the old-school straps here to hold that yeah I mean that's yeah it's functional too it's not even just aesthetic I mean it really helps keep something down and just beautiful and people have no idea what it takes to get an automobile like this certified for the American market it's just it's just crazy the amount of rules and regulations and airbag testing and crash testing and to think that they actually crashed one of these pass you know I guess you could do it on computers now I think you can simulate but I'm guessing back in 2014 you probably had to yeah what is that beautiful plate there that's there yeah this everything is just plates about the car you know a thousand 14 December when it was delivered so really almost 2015 right um just so there's only a hundred of these cars right and that's the other thing you know if it's a hundredth of these cars what means a hundred clients I mean Horatio really could know every client right and stuff and I've gotten to some really deep conversations with them which is you just don't get nowadays and the fun thing is there are mechanics that have jobs for life there's a wire guy and he goes all over the world servicing yeah these cars you know because a lot of them will sit and not get much much I mean you drive yourself that's what I like about it you actually get out and use it he takes it to car shows and it's fantastic the people because to see it here is amazing when you see it out on the street next to a Camry or just all the cars are on the road it's just oh my god you see people actually put down their cell phones for a moment son to to school it this morning with this and then oh yeah that's pretty cool the gearshift lever is interesting yeah so so of course it's always in the neutral position there when you pull it down that's the dry position yeah and up is the reverse trap science or reverse cool yeah can you manually shift it and you can matter to you okay all right let's go around to the rear of the vehicle here and this Horatio's name right there yeah this is probably the most dramatic side of the vehicle you got the LED taillights there and then of course the four pipes looks like canons come magnet thing that's new that's part of the upgrade yes what's that titanium that's titanium ok very good then the new diffuser down there and what is the red light down there at the bottom that a stop light or an additional stop light ok and you have a high one too as well and those are all looks like a million little LEDs yes very cool can we open the hood and see what it looks like in the engine compartment ok we got we got that little strap there so right and do the strap after you undo the strap then there's a little red lever there we go well I mean this car looks like it's brand new you've got about what 3,000 miles on it yep Wow I mean it's it it's amazing other beauty of it right it's such it's such amazing all the other details you have these structural pieces here the new shocks yeah and apparently there's like one guy that you know handles this engine yeah I was at the AMG factory and I once and I was really impressed I mean did you know each guy builds an engine and it's very cool look what kind of lunch they serve you there do I interesting now but they're very nice people nice people and of course these are your fluids here this is gas on this one yeah yeah the oil will be here okay this is water here and oil on that side Wow I mean look at that exhaust right there with this and we didn't look like that in the other one so this upgrade the exhaust looks even better and it's a little lighter and I like how it turns purple there with that that purple was yeah beautiful is that from the heat or they forgot that they made it like that okay I mean like that I almost want to do a car like that color I think that it really is it really is let's open the front - is it a full effect it's pretty much the same deal here yeah and where does your luggage go on the side there on the side is two or both side there's a little compartment you can open it and see if only maybe carry a pack of cigarettes you can throw it in there yeah well that's all the Italians need it's a pack of cigarettes yeah that's true oh I see okay there's your fans yeah and radiator oil cooler your fluids are under here I mean it's nicely packaged yeah you know there's no part of this car that's not finished you know a lot of automobiles even hyper cars you open them up and it's sure what you would expect where is this you tell you any and the ratios the master working on carbon fiber but you can see the carbon fiber not all carbon fiber looks the same I have the cars that carbon fibers don't look as good right right oh that's amazing I mean the weave is perfect and you know it's just funny every aspect of the car from underneath from above you almost still you want to take it out on the road with good rock chips and paint but I mean 3,000 miles I would I believe this car had zero miles on if I saw it I mean look at the attention to detail here the way these struts hold this up yeah well that's a big radiator it's a big motor yeah a v12 which wind turbos it's gonna make a lot of heat you know yeah they they use dry sump lubrication right so the the car can sit lower and that's bare but more downforce yeah yeah I think it's time we took this thing for a ride what visibility is excellent you know so many hyper cars you get in them and you like looking through a tank with you know where's this the windows them and the mirrors are fantastic I mean I let the peers whatever fouls do you pay for having that far more than makes up for actual use I can't imagine pulled into garage I must back those but it's uh I mean they're really fine I can see everything perfectly and they're nice size it's almost it's bigger than most videos you know yeah after the tempesta upgrade which was the big deal of this car that they get to drive this more downforce you know the drive is more tighter [Music] submissive suspension yeah is about more tighter but of course sound so much better so you really can see that I mean feel the difference of the upgrade and this engine is really bulletproof different Sadie's AMG v12 what's not Mercedes that I am GOG got some motor so it's not really fair when I see if you to say it's got a Mercedes Benz engine it doesn't what is this car way do you know yeah it weighs it weighs twenty twenty-nine hundred pounds dry Wow that's remarkable I know I think your racial very sensitive to way even put the upgrade they were saying oh you know this is one kilo faster you know he eats tires one kilo last yeah and there's these big sauce is seven kilos less than the old one and the splitter and they in the future is a Latino so everything has added up together to be yeah because it's cars you know more and more things just add more and more weight you know yeah so so what so the upgrade is even less weight than original there's a cop right there so we're not gonna get on the on-ramp today you know and I think as you can see the cop in the rearview mirror and looking at 60 miles an hour you're barely hitting 2100 rpm yeah but who goes 60 miles an hour maybe pinching it only weighs a little under 3000 pounds yet it's got all the things of a luxury car you know most hyper cars that weigh 3,000 but they just stripped inside you know or is this as I mean this could easily be a luxury car of some kind rather than a high-performance sports car but whether you're a man or woman you don't want a spouse it's crazy about cars because there's no home one day and they're gonna be out driving what a treat this is I want to thank David you know he's a real collector that shares his cars with people and the fact he doesn't wear any socks don't let that bother he's a real car guy and and the fact you bring these by and takes into the car shows you people always complain that nobody lets anyone get near their cars but he always does and he's great for the hobby and he gets kids get so excited when they see this thing that's really a lot of fun so David thank you my friend thank you buddy and buy a watch from me he's got to pay for this car I was
