So in the video he said he took a stock Dino and put in a motor from an F40 that was bored out to 3.6L. Then he said he has an agreement with the shop that made it where they will make 25 more over a 5 year span, so 26 cars total. My question is where are they getting the 26 F40 engines?

Finding 26 Dino's to modify shouldn't be too difficult, but F40s are so valuable that even if you wreck one, you could still rebuild it. Are they just casting their own block to the same dimensions as an F40 engine and then boring it out? Or can you buy F40 crate motors from the factory?

The interactions between Jay Leno and David Lee are interesting. There was a video that had an awkward moment where David randomly asks, "Do you like sushi?" Jay simply replied "No."

I remember someone posted the article about this and there was a comment saying it would be on Jay Leno's Garage. Here it is. Definitely not surprised, this is his fifth time on.

This has got to be the coolest modified Ferrari, right? Considering they're not often modified in the first place, I can't imagine anyone has done something has sweet as this. I love the shot at 3:28, stunning rear quarter and those wheels are perfect.

Did you catch that Ferrari Purists shouldn't be upset about it because it looks factory and has a Ferrari engine? I missed it the first ten times. But otherwise, beautiful car.

Oh. My.

Instant lust for this thing. It's just utterly beautiful... even more gorgeous than a standard Dino... and that sound, that power... wow.

I'm normally a purist but this has completely changed my mind on that. Proof that when modding is done tastefully and with purpose, it really works.

Not a restomod, but a respectful merger of the engine from the last car Enzo built with the car named in memory of his son.

My question is - since the F40 was turbo charged - how come this isn't? it would be cool to take the whole setup and do it properly

So there clearly are seatbelts, can see them over their shoulders, but they just decided not to wear them while driving on public roads?

Gorgeous design and sweet car. Kinda off topic: I'm not digging the area hes been filming lately in his garage. Maybe its the lightning? I preferred the more natural less white/blue lighting like it was before.

[Music] the guy the bankers in the bill [Music] welcome to the episode of Jay Leno's Garage today something so unusual no one has ever seen this before okay you're looking at anything at well looks like a 73 do you know Spyder you know removable roof well that it is now if you watch this show you know we've done resto Porsche 911s and every other kind of car but this is the first sort of resto mod Ferrari I've ever seen because this Dino which normally had a v6 160 horsepower now has a Ferrari f40 motor with well over 400 horsepower the car has been totally gone through updated I am so anxious to drive this car and it belongs to our good friend David Lee now you all know David Lee he's been here a bunch of times he's got one of the most wonderful Ferrari collections of the world but mostly stock this is his first modified vehicle and I'll tell you how excited he is to be here today he actually wore socks David socks on good AJ yeah it's unbelievable well this is just beautiful this is on this is the cover car on the June 2018 issue of octane magazine they thought it was so impressive they put it on the cover so tell us the story you know about 18 months ago I was talking to another collector that you know that is into the restomod Porsches and we were saying oh let's if we made a video going up Angeles Crest that would be really great goes yeah yeah well would I use he goes I would use my two to seven outlaw Porsche well would you use and I was thinking about it well he says in the 70s I don't really have any like great cars the Ferrari made of 70 to be their 60s or 80s and later right and I said okay I'll get back to you and then I started to think through and I said well would be great if you know a dino it's just a great looking car if it had the power and all that that that that we could use to race around that would be a really great idea and then I found a place in the UK that was willing to do that for me well I love the fact that you kept it all for yes I mean you didn't put a small-block Chevy in the back or anything like that I mean I'm sure there are ferrari purists that will just want to hang you but you know III think it's so clever and it fits so beautifully it looks like something the factory could have made again it's not a factory car this was built in England by just some incredible craftsmen I mean they have so many wonderful craftsmen okay they do in England it's just too beautiful beautiful work it is a dino as you all know them in every way except it has three times the power right have the brakes been upgraded yeah the brakes are Brembo brakes power brakes so that you got a powerful engine it's so you gotta have stopping power in the in the same time so so for sure everything has gone through the drive trains the suspension very smart type of you still have the original engine I do so if you sold this and 50 years from now somebody want to put it back to stock they could yeah it's a bolt on pull off so everything can be put back to the way it was I have all the parts and that's the beauty of what I did here well it's fascinating because it's the right size it's the right weight you know modern supercars seem so big you know why didn't one and they take up the whole Road because you've gotta have all the safety things all that whereas this is so light and and and it just said light and fluffy but it's true it just it looks like it dances down the road and with 400 plus horsepower it's just gotta be unbelievable even with a bigger engine we can keep the same weight of 24,000 pounds and also is balanced by all four 2,500 pounds well yeah well the original block was cast iron because iron yeah these are new yeah those are the but there's layers and layers on it already has let me ask you about the wheels now those are not the stock wheels correct yeah that so so we casted it from the original 14 inches to 17 inch 17 17 the front as well yes yes you know I like that era when all four tires were the same size like the Miura my early Miura they seemed I mean obviously don't have the grip but they it just seems light and the steering is really easy you know very cool very cool all right what else is different let's see again we talked about the flares those are beautiful airs the headlight covers also great you know there there are some people that they try to do them in the past cuz they thought it was a great idea but there there's clips or things like that today yeah but but with today's technology I can make it invisible set and it just you know yeah it's really nice I'm trying to remember when they covered originally I guess they know they weren't well they warrant uncover yeah yeah okay very cool yeah so that was also a visual difference also the visual difference in the back with the exhibition back where you can see the engine because that was opaque all right I also have to opaque one as well but I like the simple mirror it's not a big giant right you know where the inside yeah that's exactly yeah so of course this lifts off this comes off yeah so you put that in the back but you know from the outside that's all you really see that's a little bit different than a normal Dino but what is not normal very different it's the inside with all the engines and the dry trans and the gearbox and the in the the clutch and the power steering so it's all modern electronics fly-by-wire yeah no throttle cable and in the engine it was 2.9 liters and we we board it out to make it 3.6 a lot of leaders with the Forge piston and crankshaft it's it's very smart yes we got it as I said if you're for a guy in your mad you won't be as mad because it's all four all right leases the lineages there that's what makes it cool and this is what people would have done maybe 40 years ago when these cars weren't very valuable I mean I can remember when you could get a 250 for our $15,000 in the 70s or something now they're all you know even parts cars a quarter million about you it but I mean that's what's really cool about it it's really good and again you can go back to stock if you wanted these people it's all upset that they've modified a Ferrari you can change it back whatever you want and there are certainly plenty of regular Dino's around like was there about a total maybe four thousand yeah didn't make a lot yeah very very cool and the flares are really not that obvious maybe because the black tends to mute it a little bit so it's nicely done and the rear end with the chrome bumpers and the four exhaust look great yeah the exhaust is all it was all custom exhaust to to make way you don't see it the snap-on GTO composition exhaust makes a very nice touch to the city bow it says yeah yeah 3.6 Evo is the the model of this car I'm naming it Monza Monza and there's a story why Monza - because Dino Ferrari his kind of most important car that he contributed to Ferrari was this Monza 3 3 3 SP so that was you know it because he had a short lifespan the Monza was was something that was just so I said ok I wouldn't call it Monza three points Dino was Ferrari son who died at a very young age right right and I'm like much too a dystrophy right yeah that was a sad sad story it really was it really was but he was an engineer and he contributed actually work for his dad like many of us did now can we open this here sure there's a trunk and then there's the engine okay well the trunk first this here we okay wow you got a full sized trunk yeah well it is it's a full set of course you also have is there any trunk room in the front or that all take yeah that's all taken up by the their spare tire and some of the other yeah I'd like to see how and you have the bigger radiating room yeah bigger it's a f40 radiator oh okay let's see what that I'll go around this side let's open her up now that's a full-size spare that's it now that this you put that on you gone not this right but inflate a thing yeah exactly but that radiates it looks pretty boy that's massive that's a serious radiator right yeah twin fans obviously and the way this is all nicely done boy the detail work is really I mean look it's nicely screwed in here mm-hmm it all looks this looks like a factory car yeah he took this to a Ferrari show and people didn't know they would just think oh yet you kept the original fuse blocks and everything you boy right yeah I mean I wanted to keep as much as original as possible you know and just where you needed to be to have the fun that's what we have yeah well boy it doesn't get any better than this - it's just great yeah well let's take this thing for a spin I'm for sure gonna be a lot of fun I love this delicate little door hinge there's all kinds of room in here all right it fits in here me too or it's a dog like transmission yeah I love a gated shift boy the steering is so light and you know the steering is how a power steering but under 15 miles per hour at the hour over it's like back to the right yeah very cool [Music] sounds good sounds great but it sounds factory it sounds like something they would build just loud enough taking a lot of times people with the AH really loud exhaust you know and it doesn't it's not tuned and this has a nice rich metal sound I'm gonna stop till you really punch it that it really comes alive like that feels like it wants to rev forever I mean it's so much faster than yeah I mean you can drive this to Vegas your sandwich oh I mean and it's funny it's small on the outside but it's big on the inside I actually had the moves move the seat forward because there was so much leg grow it's not even the bigger Ferraris don't have this much light now you're gonna build more of these is that correct yeah you know because a lot of my friends wanted to to also make a half one and I figured because I didn't want people to to do it differently and put a Chevy engine in the back oh so I guess I said okay I'll have agreement with the guys that made it for me in the UK and they said they could make 25 of these five years so I've a year and to make it exactly the same and and I guess I'm in charge of being able to exceed the order and sell them off to the collectors the right collector [Music] yeah so how would people contact you through the website to be out there yeah do they get an email be through Instagram Instagram yeah like I said the suspension can be adjusted up and down it's fully yeah no there's no none of that old classic car suspension sound and feel it's just like all the model cars are the ring wings in the downforce and all that all the fun is between 20 and 110 120 I mean this is not a car you take to the track Sekai you check up at the nails with CL so you don't need all that serious aerodynamics you know you're pushing it that hard on the street you're probably gonna wind up in jail it's a wonderful car to drive swiftly just enjoy this gearbox now I love a classic Ferrari gaging gearbox it there's something so sexy about it I don't know what you know I'm watching the old movies you know as a chip really deep and the interior is all pretty much stock and I stored that way the only difference is the shift knob do you have I like this kind of round shift knob right instead of the black plastic one but you got the bagel engages which I like yeah yeah and then I got a cell phone holders because nowadays you know it just is so convenient and the GPS and everything CI a-- but it flips in and flips out so it's funny but everything else is [Music] this is what restomod should be it's just so nicely that I I defy anybody look at this and think it's not a factory job and that's what I wanted to do do it so that people would think it has to be like yeah I'm a battery you know nowadays there's so many younger people that appreciate the classic car but they don't want to deal with the classic car problems right so the rest of my kind of idea is such a feeling to them it's so then it's so popular too many people Charlie's I mean your Toyota Corolla has it a week 260 horsepower this is the car the factory should the bill shame that if we put that v8 in you know you know because they could yeah they could have done it third version they could have done this you know I keep saying it but it's just the right size you know some of these cars you have one wheel on the yellow line you know yeah I was driving somewhere this morning and I was like there was a small space but that's a day I can fit this car there yeah yeah my other car is like no way you can't take that space forget about that space this car even if you like ding defender it's not carbon fiber right so it's not a gazillion dollars you can bang it out [Applause] well you really feel that front end right it's a very balanced car - yeah very nice it's a really nice that's a nice of restomod as I've ever seen the restomod isn't even the right term but you always think American cotton wrist but that's what it is essentially but it's all true - it's all Ferrari stuff so DNA is almost right you know this seems like the kind of thing that somebody might have gone to him so and said I want to put the head before tea and then no no and let me do it in secret then they drive it past the bars and look up you know what I mean because I can't believe that Enzo wouldn't have approved of it right I mean it's such a brilliant car it really is nice and although the Dino was never officially classified as a Ferrari I think 50 years later we can say it is yeah I think it's earned its metal so to speak if you'd like to learn more about this car pick up the June issue of octane magazine 2018 that's the it's the best car magazine I've England it's really terrific it's on the cover you'll see it on the newsstand and you can learn about a little bit more about it in there and see some fabulous pictures once again David Lee thank you my friend thank you buddy you've become quite a connoisseur you have excellent taste thank you think I'm learning from you yes yes a good taste in France too let's see what this baby does see you next week [Music] [Music]
