the following is a special presentation of ESPN on ABC this is America's heartland we're under the openindiana sky sits the most precious stretch of pavement in racing Indianapolis Motor Speedway racing fans from all over the world that's a steal generation the chaos that had taken is now quieted the cars are rolled off they are fine-tuned and ready an hour from now the world's best drivers will take off from this legendary launching pad and race 500 miles with speeds so fast it'll make your head hurts welcome to the 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 I am Lindsay's Arne AK and I am thrilled to share this Memorial Day weekend with you it is almost impossible not to feel whether you're a child experiencing the Indy 500 for the very first time or if you're an adult who hasn't missed this race in more than 50 years or if you just fall somewhere in between once you experience the 500 it is in your blood we invite you over the next hour to feel the history and tradition right along with us and we begin with the storylines that will make up the fabric of this year's Indy 500 we send it down to our team beginning with Rick Dubrow win one Indy 500 and you get in the record books win four and you get racing immortality Dario Franchitti last year won his third Indy 500 and as he goes through his pre-race ritual inside this truck behind me he knows what's at stake in this race so as today the day the Chip Ganassi x' team can help the scotsman to an AJ Foyt Rick Mears and Al Unser senior as a racing immortal the name Roger Penske is synonymous with the Indy 500 and once again he's fielding three cars today all starting in the first three rows all seeking Penske perfection today will document the three car as Elio Castroneves chases history looking to become the youngest four-time winner ever at the Indy 500 for Andretti Autosport s' there is strength in numbers with a race high five cars competing in this year's field a 33 the odds are already in their favor as a car owner Michael Andretti has no preference as to which of his five drivers win the race but as a dad a win by son mark would make this day forgettable and if you like the underdog today you're going to be rooting for Edie carpenter he's the David against the IndyCar Goliath he bested the Pinsky's the Ganassi Zend in the end readies to earn pole position for today's race and he's one of Indy's own a local a fan favorite hoping today to realize his dream of winning the Indianapolis 500 young and old come from far and wide to kiss the famous yard and bricks here at the speedway since the ceremonial cannon was fired at 6:00 a.m. indicating the gates are open fans over a quarter of a million of them had been feeling the speedway to capacity they are soaking in the atmosphere they are counting down to the excitement of this one-of-a-kind race that was made in by and for America that's the turn of the century a country looked at her accomplishments and aspirations and decided she needed a way to celebrate them one and all so America made the Indy 500 she said we need something that recalls the miles traveled challenges and that conflicts resolve troubles endure battles lost and victories won so America made the Indy 500 something to honor the willingness to chase a dream [Applause] and after all the pain and heartache come up short and still say let's try again next year it must be something strong enough to rein in 600 horses but gentle enough to embrace the past a place that embodies all the rugged cuffed us of the Brickyard but celebrates triumph with a drink of a child people said we need a Midwestern Cathedral that is both proving ground and melting pot so America made the Indy 500 something so powerful so moving so visceral that even in an age of electronic isolation a child will want to see with their own eyes the great spectacle that their parents their grandparents and their great-grandparents saw so America made the Indy 500 the Indianapolis 500 pre-race brought to you by go daddy your small business wins with a website from GoDaddy to Indianapolis Motor Speedway the 500 is steeped in traditions but none more unique than the ceremonious drinking of milk by the winner the milk is brought in on early race day you see it here and all the drivers have been asked in advance what variety they prefer for the three-time champions Elio Katherine Eva's asked for 2% while whole milk is Dario Franchitti's choice and one of the simplest traditions is just showing up it's George butch Welsh he and his family entered the track this morning it marked his 66th straight year for the st. Louis native since 1961 he has sat in the same seat paddock penthouse well row a seat one every single race he's insisted that we call him butch so today butch we just as enjoying the race is a tradition for some families competing in the race is a family tradition for others take the dailies for example rookie Conor Daly says that he remembers being a boat waiting for drivers autographs well his father Derek raced in the 506 times Graham Rahal is human he can follow in his dad Bobby's footsteps he won the 500 in 1986 Graham is racing for his dad for a second time here at Indy but the most recognizable family of Indy drivers bears the name and ready Mario Andretti won the Indy 500 and and though they've come so close so many times no Andretti has wanted since Jeremy shaft tells us that that could change today as Mario's grandson Marco tries to add one of the longest routes in Spore Mario Andretti is slowing down [Music] they called it the Andretti curse at Indianapolis this is one of those tracks that you know we haven't really been able to truly conquer there is something there I don't know what the word is for just like his father several years ago the engine has let go Michael Andretti out of the 500 what sticks out are the negatives unfortunately there's been too many of those five and Ready's have raced on Memorial Day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway among Mario his sons Michael and Jeff his nephew John and his grandson Marco the family has 67 starts in the Indy 500 since 1965 but only once 1969 has an end ready quenched his post race thirst with milk just incredible relief like the 800-pound gorilla just flew off of my shoulder then turns out to be it was the only one even as they raced and flourished driving all over the world the Andretti's would always return windy to the race that they say means more than any other this is what it's all about is the only 500 so the best day in the worst day of your life sometimes can all be in the same day but it happens here that is where luck is a factor that Freddie's luck has been bad through the years for the ined Reddy's that worst day was Memorial Day 1992 it could have actually been the greatest day of my career ended up being the lowest day of my career because my father crashes and then I see my brother Jeff's crash ready Jeff and ready I didn't know if he was alive I'm in a hospital waiting to be taken care of we hear code three and we hear a name Jeff and my wife and I were just terrified kept telling myself I'm gonna win this for Jeff and then ten laps to go unbelievable lock for the Andretti's Michael would come up just short Jeff survived the crash and the end reddy's would keep coming back year after a heartbreaking year in 2006 Marco Andretti Mario's grandson raced it indeed for the first time with only few laps remaining he was poised to end decades of frustration and bitterness [Music] never over Indy I think I've learned that from watching my father my grandfather's career what would it mean to you to see Marco in here now you'll see me doing headstands I cannot do cartwheels yet but I think I could muster that [Music] with car owner michael andretti and michael why should the millions of and ready fans watching at home bleed this is a year that the and ready luck changes here at Indy well I think it's we have a really good shot I mean we have five really strong cars but I think Marco is probably the strongest of our five and I think he's in the right frame of mind to you know I think I think it's time and you know but we all know this place right so you know I think if you know he does everything he needs to do and the team does everything and you know racing God's helped out a little bit it could be today okay that's the car as a day what would it mean to you to see Marco it would probably be the most emotional moment of my racing career as a driver or owner you know if that were to happen for sure it would be I I think I'd probably choke tup for the first time hey good luck today thanks Lindsey gotta believe it would be very emotional for this dad and car owner to be able to walk to Victory Lane with his son absolutely Thank You doc you know another member of team Ange ready that certainly knows a thing or two about pressure it's James Hinchcliffe it was just a year ago that he took over the ride was occupied by the most popular driver in the series and his closest made himself he won two races this season and he liked Danica Patrick feels extremely comfortable in his own skin ie for a various number of reasons went to four elementary schools and I was just always the new guy part of the reason I ended up the way I am is I realized that having a good sense of humor was a really good way to break the ice and meet people I am just a guy that likes goof around there hint here welcome to the new and improved hinge town how do I Drive to go get a car put the pedal to the metal we were looking at other guys websites and we wanted to do something different so the concept of a town came along and we sort of fell into me being the self-proclaimed mayor of this place you make sure you stop by soon come visit us again now I get introduced as American job more than I do James Hinchcliffe that's got a mind of its own for me it was always very important to try and stay relaxed during a race weekend and the best way for me to do that it should just be myself which is this goofy Canadian kid who is like really pasty and you know has this beard because he looks like he's eight if he doesn't have it some weekends I'd do it better than others some weekends I walk around all stressed out and I'm not myself outside the car which makes me drive worse and I can see it I can feel it it's crazy how sensitive you know your mind is to these things it's definitely something I got to work at but I think it's it's what makes me the best driver that I can be I'm a very proud Canadian growing up I have followed all the Canadian racing drivers across the board all the Kenyan guys at least made it to Victory Lane ones and so for me I didn't want to be the one guy that did it nobody wants to be that guy second is no longer like a really good race there's so much hungrier for that win because once you've tasted it man that's all you want there's a lot of guys that maybe didn't accomplish some of the things they wanted to his drivers but they managed to win nd there are some guys who want everything but in me and it haunts him to this day and that's what any can do to guys it's a cruel mistress this place bands like a winner and to be a household name you got to win and you got to win a lot [Music] the biggest thing is I want to leave this for respected by the people that I respect in it I didn't get into this so that I could create my own internet town and call myself a fictitious mayor I got into it to drive race cars that Hinchcliffe the mayor of pinch town he is ready to go racing he starts ninth today in this race telecast presented by his sponsor GoDaddy this is more than and friends to share their passion for the greatest spectacle in racing [Music] and Dario Franchitti gets a gift that will take him back to his childhood [Music] [Music] welcome back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where they will be cruising today it speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour this is much more than a racetrack the speedway is a storehouse a true museum of memories the cars growing leaner and faster over time the drivers ever more daring and dynamic the photo finishes the record set and broken the brakes both good and bad the names the faces the races 96 of them so far none more compelling than the last three that have unfolded in the 500 Dario Franchitti Oh mine is slowing down saving a lot of fuel right now and Dan Wheldon catch him trash we're going to crash car number 24 Mike Conway and this is going to mean that Dario Franchitti will in fact win his second Indy 500 and will see the white flag killer monkey women come on baby burn arm he is [Music] can't you commence on everything he is behind the leaders story the white flag is out [Music] [Applause] [Music] so there we have Dario Franchitti one of two gentlemen today that will be going for our fourth Indy 500 win he will start this race 17 think of the best gift that you ever received as a kid maybe it was around the holidays maybe for your birthday everybody's got one but somehow they just get lost or maybe somewhere along the way left behind but what if you could get it back it would certainly be emotional even for a racing champion Tom Rinaldi has more [Music] and my first go-kart when I was five but as little iconographer looking thing I actually think I know where isn't Scotland to hopefully I can there I can persuade the gate to sell it to me be nice thing to have that bag Dario Franchitti will win had in it started the way many auto racing stories begin in a garage rare is a gift that leads to a profession but Christmas morning 1977 Jorge Franchitti a racer himself would deliver just such a present I went bought the go-kart and it came and kept form all bits and pieces and I just bolted all together put it in the room for him in the morning looking back now that was probably not a usual present to give a child when he had the fun cart Jorge put him in a field and he could run around and he was safe because it had a fence around it and Jorge would go and Reis the very first time it wasn't a grooved good omen for the future really he had his first racing accident stop the scar from where I crashed in I think that wasn't paying attention I drove it into a fence not recommended from open fields to starter tracks Dario's passion grew inserted the size of the wheels and the engines his original go-kart was left behind I sold it to buy a motorcycle because he was going over the top basically Racing is always things are superseded whether you're moving up in class that equipments done it's gone so you sell it you can get all you can for it he kept asking me about the old go-kart the little racer grew into global legend Dario Franchitti becomes a three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 as for that first go-kart it was cashed off changing hands and farms gathering mud back in Scotland we drove it round about the farm here it was quite ideal we found out that the previous owner was Dario Franchitti's it was his go-kart before ours so that was pretty cool this past year his parents tracked it down with a birthday in mind his mother had the great idea because it's his 40th and what do we buy him she says why don't we get the go-kart and recondition her so that's what Dad did so just over 35 years later Jorge Franchitti finds himself rebuilding his oldest son's first go-kart the original back tires still intact the rusted bolts replaced the colours returned to their childlike glow every story of every champion has a starting point and that cool car has a starting point for dial [Music] on May 19th in Indianapolis dario franchitti 40th birthday he received his gift all over again [Music] that's it it's all being done for you yep still runs a bit of a short potato to see us in here this brings back incredible memories when I was five years old this thing felt as quick as this thing does know and it's the same passion and interesting going fast that I had when I was a little boy that I have no really [Music] can you imagine what that moment would be like Dario said every time he races in the Indy 500 the passion just gets deeper and deeper there is his father Jorge so maybe his son can return the gift with the fourth Indy 500 win today Frank Keeney by the way will not be in the go-cart when he drives as a member of Chip Ganassi esteem today Ganassi will want him at his best to take on his main rival Roger Penske between the two teams they have 20 wins total here at the in d5 one of the most intriguing Penske storylines is AJ Allmendinger just last year Allmendinger was driving for that team in NASCAR until a failed drug test left him suspended and released by Penske but after working to get himself reinstated Allmendinger has been rewarded with loyalty he makes his Indy 500 debut today and he is standing by with our Jamie little well Lindsay not a lot of drivers will be given a second chance like a.j has from a man like Roger Penske why do you think he believed in you and gave you this opportunity I don't know and I'm not gonna ask him no it's uh I just think he's just a great person generally cares about me knew what happened was a dumb mistake but and I'm very fortunate he believes in my talent and thinks that I can go out there and win this thing and thanks to Izod for coming on board and believing in me as well but it's just a great family to be a part of your first Indy 500 what did it take for you emotionally and physically to prepare well I mean this is my last chance this is the last shot I got to go out there and make something happen and you know the last thing I wanted to do is say you know what I didn't quite give him my all and I wasn't quite prepared and I've worked so hard physically mentally you know I got to think my teammates Elio and we'll four there's our Poulsen yeah exactly photobombing but uh it's just uh it's been a lot of hard work it's been a lot of fun though everybody at Team Penske it's just such a great group of people to be around Chevy for bringing us great engines so we got a chance to win this thing we do everything right I make no mistakes team makes no mistakes got shot put the eyes on Chevy in victory lane he's starting on the second row that's got a Rick du breul standing by with Scott Dixon over the last seven years you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a driver who has a better record here at Indy then Scott Dixon yeah he's won once finished second twice never finished lower than six in those years but here's the question do you think more about the victory or about the races you lost I think you always think about the ones you'd lost you know the victory you've got under your belt but you know two of those have finished behind second daddario under yellow which is always frustrating that you can't race to the end but yeah you know there's we've had so many great finishes he has so many great races we've only you know one once Dario's won a couple of times in the last few years here so you got to quit a lot of it to the team you know team targets just a phenomenal organization and Oh a lot of it to them and you know hopefully today we can just go that one step further Scott Dixon said he's only won once I think he wants twice today thank you Rick the Indy 500 you know draws fans from all sports Colts coach Chuck Pagano and won over the hearts of Indiana natives because of his courageous battle with cancer and his return to his team he waved the green flag to begin full day today he was aboard that chopper as he had the honor of delivering the green flag that will be used in the race which driver will take the checkered flag we are getting close to finding that answer as we get set for driver intros that is next down to the start of the greatest spectacle in racing at this stage at the tension grows the Excite now we send it down to Dave Calabro with the driver introductions making his 10th Indy 500 appearance from right here in Indianapolis the bond [Applause] [Music] race fans let's give them a warm welcome the starting field for the 97th running of the greatest spectacle in racing the Indianapolis 500 [Applause] the drivers are taking the traditional class photo next to the iconic BorgWarner trophy it weights a hundred and ten pounds in 1935 to ten thousand dollars today it's valued at more than 3.5 million the winner of this race will become the 100th face added to that trophy they will later be given an individual baby Borg like all drivers that win the 500 so that they can keep something as a memento but what a driver must go through to get to Victory Lane at Indy is as dangerous as it is difficult each time they strap into that open wheel race car as they take off at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour these men and women and their families know the unspoken risk is very real why do I do what I do there is no logic no reasoning the physics cannot be reconciled the risk shadows the reward how do I justify my desire to drive 33 car raining down the flood well over 200 miles an hour [Music] free water [Music] [Music] this the only thing I've ever wanted to do yet here's a look at the major speed milestones reached over the years topping out at 237 miles per hour for this month it's and carpenter here he is with our Vince Welch Vince well millions will be watching today and many will be in awe of the speed and the precision and the courage for which these drivers do their job and Edie what is it about the psyche of a racecar driver that allows you that exclusive focus on nothing but the pursuit of the victory you know we've trained for a lifetime for this and you just have to look around and you can feel the energy here and how special this place is we race for the Indianapolis 500 and we can't wait to get started today what are the nerves feel like right now a little more than normal but I know as soon as that engine fires up I'll be ready to go 33 of the bravest and the best about to roll off for the Indianapolis 500 Lindsay at all International Cemetery when we continue from Indianapolis right after this [Music] on our telecast presented here's a look they are to fan-favorite Elio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan they started and in the packet has been another man's riches come on has never water here meanwhile earlier has won the Indy 500 three times they both been racing the Indy 500 for more than a they're both from Brazil and Castroneves from the country that's really where this whole thing started for them as little kids competing against one another and also supporting each other along the way [Music] I we've been competing for so long 30 years starting back in Brazil long time ago I met a Leo at the go-kart track I was ten and Natalie was nine when we were young I remember till this day we used to you know the night before the race just get the helmets clean and we're talking about hey if you get there I'm gonna carry your helmet and we said if one of us make it the guy that made it will help the other one there was the know growing up together and racing against each other forever it brought a lot of respect but also a lot of rival to between the two of us every time you go out track first name you look where is he where's ya okay a little bit better he was the only guy that matter and I think if he had finished 11th in I was 10 good day there was times that were super friends and yes there was times that we hate each other Tony Kanaan completely bought a little character never saw a chance for a title they're not happy each other we spent probably two years that we didn't speak there was one of those you know rivalry and we still didn't talk about it actually and a hindsight I think was probably childís of my part but I definitely regret that and in the end of the day you know because I always the wonder like I turn the page even when we were here it's that's true I like that I was extremely and stubborn you see I'm Taurus and they say I'm and what was your sign Capricorn yeah they say I don't always they say I'm very sweet but in the end of the day I felt and I think we understand each other's like it's not worth it he makes me better he made me better as a couples therapy through the course of our career it kind of like always levels out I get something he gets something I get something he gets something Tony Kanaan wins it all here in 2004 he's a champion in the series and I never been a champion I'm I want three times Indianapolis and he and you didn't have that opportunity leader so this is my 11th year I've led eight years in a row every race I raced here that every year that I've been here I wasn't in a position to win but for some reason I haven't on the other hand my fellow Brazilian driver won three times he has three I only want one having an opportunity to be last-lap between him and I who is gonna win he knows all my moves and I know all his moves I'll go high crashing somebody else will win the only difference will be we will still be speaking to each other on Mondays Brazil there are 13 different countries represented at this Indy 500 an American has not won this race since 2006 we are honored to be joined at the speedway today by several Purple Heart recipients we so appreciate your service Arlington National Cemetery outside of Washington DC is a place to remember the service and sacrifice of every soldier laid to rest there since 1948 every Thursday before Memorial Day a group of soldiers known as the old guard placed flags in front of more than 260,000 gravestones it is the highest honor and a sacred duty the tradition called flags in [Music] so many souls same sacrifice for liberty for country for us to be draped in the Stars and Stripes is to be graced by a nation's eternal gratitude the ceremonies are sown but the sadness is felt side by side with pride these are patriots these are heroes who fell in the defense of freedom and they will not be forgotten so flags in for the courage flags in for the cause flags in foreign freedom flags in for the fall who we salute on this Memorial Day and we will remember forever [Music] gracious and merciful God all times and seasons are of your making every day is your gift we are grateful that you bring us together today to enjoy the greatest spectacle and raising [Music] we thank you for the great city of Indianapolis which gives us name to this 500-mile contest thank you - for the homeland Jorge family whose members established and preserved this iconic race and for the cooperation of the izod indycar series the premier open-wheel racing series in north america even as we thank you Lord our hearts turn teaming petition please bless us with a safe contest preserve the drivers crews and spectators from all harm help each team to do its best and to live with the results on this weekend we remember the men and women who died while serving in the armed forces of the United States of America may their sacrifice not be in vain let us continue the struggle for liberty and justice for all your daughters and sons grant us enduring peace the peace you alone can give we hold up to you those who will spend today in sorrow and loss give strength to the victims of the recent storms in Oklahoma and comfort those who still suffer from the attacks in Boston as we thank you for this race a gift which Indianapolis shares with the world we offer our best wishes to these drivers who helped to represent the human family and bless them in their Native Tongues Godspeed what a suerte bonne route boss Archie gun bara be with us as we make our way home and continue our joy tonight by helping our beloved Pacers to ice the heat to you beyond glory forever and ever amen [Applause] standby ready Oh [Music] order oh well right Oh work ladies and gentlemen we ask that you please rise and remove your hats five-time Grammy Award winner and Indiana's own sandy Patti performs our National Anthem [Music] what [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here [Music] [Applause] [Music] the Indianapolis 500 three rigs brought to you by Geico 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance [Music] tension along pit lane drivers to your cars drivers to your cars [Applause] [Music] [Music] tension along pit lane drivers to your cars drivers to your cars [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey jingles where when I come back is this the right place where I should be s3 for the drivers had been called to their cars another time on our tradition meaning to the t's is that correct [Music] [Music] vision okay so we're starting at the drivers called to their cars right but I just since I don't have subscribe I need to know where you need me to go so I'm just gonna follow what we have in here okay got it perfect [Music] [Music] [Applause] tensional on pit lane drivers to your cars drivers to your cars [Applause] tradition as the ceremony comes to a close we were to the green the answers to so many by the races and another four-time champion either Elio Castroneves Dario Franchitti will the 44 year and ready curse finally end with the win by Mario's grandson Marco [Music] all of the countless stories parted indeed traceable to the vision of a man [Applause] empty field and a racetrack [Music] I always thought life is a race you have to be fast you have to be fearless and you have to be first I fancy myself an idea man of sorts and I wanted to build the greatest automobile racetrack in the world first you see it then you inspire great men to believe it [Music] I'm in the business of moving mountains and I see the race to its finish that's what Indy is all about Barney Lee Jones knew it when he broke 150 then came Sneed they suddenly 200 was a mere footnote I wanted a testing ground where drivers could prove their worth under fire what makes you be immortal a place where young fellows and machines could push the limits of possibility watch the dirt this was the dream innovators trailblazers and when Lyon Dyke at 2:36 we reached the summit [Music] the future with [Music] the four times paternity add a new brother Redemption a new story emerge [Music] they call me crazy Karl Fischer I looked at acres of cow country and saw a harvest of greatness it takes courage to make history who will charge forth today [Music] moments ago aprox the raids because of the bombing were Jerry punch while Marty 33 days ago four-time Indy 500 winner AJ Polk was laying on an operating room table and gives to Texas undergoing surgery just to have the strength to be here the folks he is here today to support his points leading japanese-born driver Takuma Sato some say this is the IndyCar odd-couple a racecar driver from the Far East and a car owner from the Wild West but it works at his age a puts it Sato may not be a Texan but he sure drives like one abreast every single plant here's Jamie Lee Elio Castroneves hopes to join that elite group of four-time winners today but he told me it's harder now than ever before because the competition is if Elia wins this race today they'll climb the fence drink the milk and would become the youngest winter ever at the Indy 500 Marty Reid Thank You Jamie pacing the field right there the leading us degree all-new 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray with technology that's been developed infected on tracks around the world it's a fitting assignment for the new stingray to lead this field as pace car for the Indianapolis 500 and they are driving the pace car is none other than San Francisco 49ers head coach all right let's take a look now at our GoDaddy what to watch for we mentioned we were going to talk a little bit more Scott and convert a local hometown hero certainly has a great opportunity today and Carlos menus who's in the middle front row a rookie very fast people may be concerned whether or not you be able to complete this race people are cautious being around him Marco Andretti fan-favorite right now from going on and winning this event his grandfather did it in 1969 you want to focus on row number six rows or number six is a photocopy what happened at the end of last year we have Scott Dixon Dario Franchitti and Takuma Sato almost picking up their battle for more than that one off last year this is a road to watch a total of 12 onboard cameras for you let's start off with Dario Franchitti he'll be handing the target onboard looking for most the three number four Charlie Kimball 3,500 story and rightfully home [Music] alright Grammy let's have a great day today have fun out there and we'll give you the green one it's one the time compound [Music] the National Guard car powered by and his teammate just [Music] 500 star [Music] it's best 5th place have your pass remembers with our second horizon before the camera is hunting down [Music] camera last year's Indy yeah and James Hinchcliffe has the Go Daddy on board finished last year gets dark night today James should double check on your controls you're alive on the front bar and 50% on the wage anchor I think that's a good place to start the race our boys ready on the outside of Row 1 the United Fighter and dad people start and our pole-sitter with the Chevy on board at Carpenter comparison and with good reason and welcome when a one car team to victory level collide streaming of all 12 onboard cameras go to watch ESPN [Music] now our broadcast is false Spanish all you have to do is activate your si it's presented by ESPN Deportes as you can tell it is overcast here today [Music] we also wanna talk about the temperature because I know that conditions very well and I actually spoke to Kevin cows nervous disorder he says I think these cars going the traditions fine he's not welcome Firestone tires [Music] the carbs so we'll have to watch them today but I think this temperatures [Music] [Music] realize just one thing no one are asked to go this batch for this distance 500 miles buckle up enjoy the sights and sounds [ __ ] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] three head governor has taken the early lead [Music] [Music] or their car we'll bring them because of ice [Music] side by side through the corner there [Music] position [Music] on the first back straight mollified running faster than all of his teammates but qualifying is one thing races another [Music] in one of you'll notices Munoz takes a totally different [Music] which looks risky but has been very efficient for me on the front straightaway [Music] [Music] - there you can see where he stopped [Music] sorry from winning the race when he hit the first words he said were Scott soaring blue most meaning the back end of the car wants to come around for you and Eddie as you know it is very difficult to be able to drive the car that is loose in traffic it's impossible a car that is loose now and he actually had the proper going into the corner yes the car in front of him took his downforce away and all of a sudden part has changed balance in that case in question is honestly Eddie it's a car that you driving have enough you see he's also just outside of the that may be the back end got just a little bit loose on him and the back end start to come around let's ride on board [Music] Hillebrand driver for the National Guard we have troops over in Afghanistan what's their reaction [Music] they're disappointed of course because the car they were so now that we got a chance look at what happened is it Hinchcliffe a piece of the racetrack and he didn't give Hildebrandt all the room that he would have wanted and he had half of his car up to the gray it was early in the race and maybe his cars it loosen and the tail end just came around let's go off more but James Hinchcliffe [Music] don't y'all going [Music] got more well you guys junior Hildebrand told me they brought an aggressive setup here they came here to win they finished second place with this team for the last five years they didn't want to finish second again so they went extremely aggressive Junior told me this car was not comfortable to drive at all but it was fast and that could have led to this well as we've seen this place can come up and bite you very quickly at Indianapolis and it has just been the number four mob restarts last year [Music] in the seven [Music] [Music] Charlie Kimball has started 19th but fallen back in the field and a report from Vince Welch he has an electrical issue he came back in and will go back out on the track now [Music] first caution leads Portland ready a jvzoo Carlos Williams then will power his fifth and Elio Castroneves is six were getting ready for our first way star [Music] don't go green flag out [Applause] [Music] they say the leaders always a sitting duck he's [Music] the opportunity passing right now you see one - why go through turns one and two at the speed [Music] number twelve verizon Penske machine [Music] now we'll start to stretch themselves out just a little bit [Music] be respectful and judicious of where you put your coffee thanks it was too like the ice I've got to jump in there look at Tony and he is putting pressure he wants the race [Music] certainly did that with his racecars you see him making [Music] on the free side he said it felt perfect through practice and he has loved it so far getting a great example of crafting here it's almost impossible to lead a little group and disappear with these new cars when you're in front you're punching some nearby for Mazda's gain is like they have 20 extra horsepower [Music] and hear him throttle back just as we start into the turn when I talk about this drivers that are smart [Music] leaving the Indianapolis 500 but he's using [Music] we learned that over a fall 22 laps that you have in full tanks if you are leading [Music] on a tour 29 laps for a full tank fuel in most cases so [Music] learned that lesson the hard way last year's running third right now Marco Andretti he led the most laps he's taken over second there Tony Kanaan he led 59 laps last year but he said it killed me on fuel consumption the dead end from PT took advantage of it at the end speaking of Dario Franchitti he is now running back in 11th Elio Castroneves in sixth those are the two coin [Music] they're historial as right behind me is James Hinchcliffe now pitchbook is going in the ball collection see if we can see what happened on board a lot of movement out of the stern we look at him fall [Music] I do not want to be that two times [Music] laughs Tony different leader Marco did say on the right my car is run by but I might falling back in line [Music] happening Carlos muñoz who is a puppy went on and there goes back out front now when the car goes in front of you just like these change turn one the car in front takes a little bit of air slider your steering wheel turns a little easier [Music] our thirdly change [Music] surpass that mark today the key from who knows to talk to him before the race this is his first ever IndyCar Series race and they preached patience to him he said it so much is going to be going on around you that you've never experienced before settle in don't be afraid to just sit back in third or fourth and get a feel for the race get a feel for the traffic and the the racecar fields don't believe you've got the charge to the front it's got to be the patient approach the jaw to Lucas who handles the strategy for Carlos Fujio said that's all we preach to him to show [Music] time winner Castroneves on his tail this is gonna be another another change leader at the stripe so make that lead change number second JPSO running in the fourth spot another car that's sort of sneaking up on the sorghum in the [Music] now shove away seven we've got a stem assignment you won't miss a thing here at Indianapolis as we go side by side there's your top five and our telecast presented by Go Daddy [Music] [Applause] you saw in side-by-side the swap going twice between that man Tony Kanaan and here comes marco andretti [Music] Marty what this is telling me is that these drivers are very comfortable with the power of a wind also plays a big factor here because the speed that small jet really going down the straightaway about 230 [Music] [Applause] indeed dual in Detroit now it's two races one on Saturday Sunday on ABC at 3:30 Eastern both days [Music] as we watch the steam cars all returned the fourth car in line Carlos windows that we talked about the rookie watch how his returns returns his left side down veterans around here think that's very dangerous well Gerry has caught up in the very disappointed I'm already been checked after the Medical Center he's okay Junior we saw the car just snap around what happened yeah I mean I was going by Hinch I think maybe he got stuck in the hard limiter or something down the straightaway so I went by him on the outside and you know it was maybe just a little off line on on the entry but it was basically where the cars have been working fine at that point and just got got a little loose in the middle of the corner and then it's like you know sort of caught it and then it snapped and just went around so I mean obviously just incredibly disappointed you know I think we had a car to run up front you know with a couple of runs of dialing things in here you know we've been pretty aggressive with the downforce love and all that kind of stuff but I even now looking at the race I don't think it was too light it was just kind of one of those things to up start for junior Hildebrand Marty well he he had turned the fastest race lap at that moment [Music] October 24 Tony Kanaan is the race leader than its Andretti carpenter Carlos Manu is the rookie [Music] and there is you see Elio Castroneves on the right side of your screen as he is going to go around EJ Viso so Castroneves I'm sorry that is [Applause] there is Elio castanets the fourth card screen there another battle for the me [Music] takes the top spot again [Music] coming up party the guy that has not experienced a pit stop so far in this new rookie Carlos windows will be interesting to see him from over 200 15 20 miles an hour down to the pit speed limit of 60 going down pit lane [Music] correctly and then have a great the first time you do it [Music] Ray had to breathe [Music] to get off sequence with the speed you almost if they're going to be passed by somebody you have to almost allow them to pass you in the right spot so you can be celibate around the whole corner and you talked about getting off the throttle he just didn't time it correctly for that time almost had a run going getting word that has an issue with this number two Penske machine he's dropping back he's now running at 19 what's happening Jamie Marty he's been on the radio this is his calling what that means they have the wrong time here and hit against the right speed air temperatures gone and now they are under geared would that mean to the engine cuts itself off in the last few hundred yards the straightaway really affect sometime and he would be in talk here is there are six speeds in these cars are they sixty use that as a passing gear and when you're running a traffic the baby safe you know what as you mentioned 250 or 300 rpms off this is fun watching this happening up front between Tony Kanaan [Music] just trying to save some fuel don't you I don't understand by Marco Andretti and Tony Kanaan are trying to I think somebody else [Music] what you wanna do last time I looked there is no prize [Music] [Applause] [Music] the race so right now Tony Kanaan says you know what I'll go back and do that again let's take a look at our GoDaddy lapped leaders already head carpenter Tony Kanaan Marco Andretti you changes and they're almost driving as if they're teammates [Music] [Applause] saving fuel and here we go up this car is gonna peel off Tony Kanaan right [Music] at all so far today he's been very happy with the they conserve fuel when they were talking come on running up ahead of the group and he indicated I'm gonna conserve some fuel it's going to be a four-tire change as they always are the IndyCar Series fill him up full of fuel and little delay on the right rear but otherwise no changes working on Mountain berry school such a bad first up they tend to keep multiplying more cars peeling off this time there's Marco Andretti on the white side your screen Fuzzy's on board we send it to Jamie little marco andretti brought a brand new race car here loved it has barely set on the radio as he swapped lead so far early in this race change just to hook that balance a little bit but otherwise happy they'll fill him up with Sunoco fuel [Music] 20 shots edging the 20th at marker party both those cars back out on track as we're working lap number 31 of 200 there's Carlos muñoz on the left side of your screen ray the series champion heading towards his pit box let's send it to Vince Walsh and indicated they were having a little bit of an oil pressure issued early in the run but that doesn't seem to have the defending Series champion I did lead a lap before coming in as the willpower that powers still out there that's the first time coming back out [Music] the race leader and theory [Music] let's send it to Jamie I'm sorry interrupt but Elia was in the pits yes when the pen skis continued filing through LDO Castroneves been pretty happy from adjustment was the call [Music] the target cars also making this up and here comes willpower so he will kill and surrender the race lead but send again the J well power makes it all the way down pit road long drive 60 miles per hour down to the number one hitbox will power not saying a whole lot as she see him tear off and tear up there could be all kinds of debris early in this race he pulls into his box [Applause] seven second and that means that James James who has stayed out memory now he stopped during the first caution period when jr. killed a burn crash so it's been 29 laps since different leader have already up to the changes Jake's to the second car in your screen she was taking a look around buddy lazier and he makes the pass cleanly Vince and Pitt's Charlie Kimball is in we told you earlier he has an electrical issue in the car they diagnosed that now they're going to change the tires and add fuel but it's been a tough race already for Charlie Kimball for them from the get-go 11.7 seconds have we got a caution on the track and san sebastian Saavedra has bent the right front corner of his number six so our second caution comes out here 36 [Music] he is just crossing the yard of bricks long way to go to get to come around could pay off right down here at the tip out area this is a very rare thing that you see a car with a pen suspension him in because normally have a problem it in Indy it's half the bodywork is basically [Music] go back he's already up against the wall he got away lightly no way to hit the wall is about worse than that Jerry you've got more Saavedra discs you'd the radio and said someone should get a big penalty someone should get a big penalty very angry about someone getting in his way and the result they're damaged race car and now he has to climb so let's take another look at Scott [Music] so there's a measure on the far right and he got chopped for t he catched that for his murder damages he has asthma net Eddie said trying to see which car that was that was right in front and we'll try get more detail for it but right now we're gonna step aside just for a few moments after work from our ABC stations there's your top five the Indianapolis 500 telecast presented by Go Daddy here small business wins with a web site from GoDaddy and Sunoco the official fuel of IndyCar [Music] I care at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway our helicam coverage for today's Indianapolis 500 brought to you by daddy we're under our second caution we've had six different leaders and 13 lead changes this caution cause bikes that's a great driving but we'll get more of that right now special guest is alongside with Jamie yes the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion from 2012 here with Roger Penske his first ever Indy 500 and you brought your dad and your crew chief what do you think seeing that start what's it an early father's ad if you know fathers days coming around the corner you gotta take care of dad and you know racing us with dads but quad race Indy 500 just glad to be here and I got one of the best pits to be in Roger Penske he's won this race 15 times yeah more than I can count on my fingers and just trying to soak it all in so it's an amazing experience and hopefully make it back in time for the race tonight but I'm gonna have fun either way you have the desire to be out here and do the double one day it's hard to be here as a racecar driver and not want to drive Jamie so yes great to see here Brad good luck tonight 600 miles he'll run tonight Marty tell me why you were talking to James Jenks [Music] made their pit stop circuses in the week [Music] still under our second caution here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway race leader is Ed carpenter but with us a video that all of us are scratching our heads about it happened in turn three was he turning the radio he almost spun Wow he almost spun and then spread that out the grasp but what he's doing is he's trying to keep the tires warm by but that's something you generally don't ever do in the terms and having nine lives not one of them right then let's listen to an radio well I pulled up next to Catherine because she wasn't packing up and she just keeps flowing down and wavy by I think that was probably for something different cuz he didn't really have anybody around him that might have been for something about earlier Jamie you've got more what you guys exactly are right he said I was just warming up my tires and didn't pay attention went through the grass so he has luck on his side so far actually the last guy that did that in 1992 and a cold day just like we're having here today the pole-sitter I was a white pine was very interesting to watch that with Roberto marco andretti running second right now as we have a hundred miles in the book so far this isn't the way you're playing it I think you know you okay and I think it and I'll play it that way dude so same way you've been brain will be fine that's exactly what we said earlier right now it really isn't in your favor to lead you want to get up and a signature card you really want somebody else's long the word cuz that they'll burn all their fields got it importantly though make sure you trim in your car understanding what your car at the end communicate with your team and your crew change carpets and to back this up the five fastest labs have been turned [Music] so what this does this is makes it easier it makes it because he had fuel strategy and at a certain point you are going to have to spray well ed carpenter lives here in Indianapolis went to school Butler University he is definitely a fan favorite I think what it's been kuis is like I've had a couple people come up to me and be like you know man I wish you could hear what the crowd was like you know when your first lap popped up there and things like that and and that's what that's what's cool this it makes me feel good knowing that you've got a town behind you basically [Music] but the high school at park tutor there is the Speedway and northeast side Oh nice picture 1999 almost has the same haircut today and then went to Butler University and of course now and hapless Motor Speedway and bleeding [Music] maybe see six laps led his first nine 500 Z's already [Music] marty was interesting to note that he came up through the old-fashioned way going through the dirt tracks in the clay tracks when he [ __ ] cars something that a lot of the other guys have not done this was just a little bit earlier that's Katherine Legge as she wipes the wall and Jerry you've got more yeah Marnie was 224 mile an hour laps were eventually things she developed and understeer and that was results he banged the wall came in they had to replace the right rear total link that's supposed to be straight this is the one that was on the car is she been in the wall spent seven laps on pit road so she is put herself back in 32nd position buddy lazier a former winner here back in pit lane he had taken the way round but he is back in Sebastian's of a dream Sparty Sebastien Bourdais also took away forever as did the eighteen of Anna Beatriz all these accidents have been seen are because people are just getting half the lanes by outing with need to me so I think everybody's made rather careful until they start putting [Music] see you're asking where is Scott Dixon [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we'll see as practice for that final [Music] the query starter phone was not the right procedure and [Music] yes and he likes the car the team was talking to just a little while ago saying that he was [Music] I'm not inside Larry Foyt on the radio talking to him walking them through this making it a patient move for Sano he's doing well ten places so far money all right thank you reckons you were talking of course you saw [Music] over [Music] start to make that move on metaphor sodding start to go high in seventh [Music] work his way to the Chevys have controlled this race right now top six positions here in the biggest motor so far ten spots guitar looks like the safest place to be in the trucks [Music] is right or as if you go back far that's not more two or three abreast in the front they're very nice to each other [Music] [Applause] as I say that a little deeper in the field we get [Music] before I'm starting to build this battery fuel consumption to try to see [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] it's gone it is but congressman to decide she had to drive his car surprisingly it's stuff I thought was gonna come out from underneath of us something that means somebody does it [Music] there were laughing at 280 [Music] marco andretti Ryan hunter-reay la ofensa Medicine Tony Kanaan side-by-side the telecast presented by GoDaddy well on side by side you notice that my boys ready back in the seventh around Takuma Sato we've got a bomb at the Western Conference Finals continue to follow Don Tony Parker the Spurs looking to be the first team to book their spot in the final Jack Randall the Grizzlies try to fight back from a three Oh deficit coverage begins but also watch to take my eyes off the action these guys at [Music] Dean and here comes in [Music] an update on Frankie - he's an 18th now [Music] I think he's in the best position of this group [Music] he and hunter a have not really check-in Frank eight events [Music] like this car in the first step of understeer but didn't make any changes doing that first stop now he says the understeer has become more that problem especially mid-corner the tires have come in quite yet though so he's not concerned or at least sure how much we're watching on more [Music] understeer so he's not because the steering wheel starts to feel why everybody else is right up there gearboxes while this was going on a little bit earlier in hit mode right this is what happened her last car in the frame as she gets up into the gray and she hits the wall it's at the fourth or fifth time we've seen that today people just getting a little bit in the gray they just cannot pull it down and it seems to be in turn number Jerry punch has caught up with pickle yes you stepped out of the car Marty we just saw the contact with the wall Pippa what happened trouble on the racetrack Marty yes we do it is one of a j14 ever on a beam of Takuma Sato and he has stalled the car he wants to get going so he he wants to get going nah there is a J for first time he was ever at this track 1958 when I think of American oval racing I all right let's say go back and take another look the back end of the car was already starting to walk around with funny on the exit of the turn so as you know Eddie that's the oversteer the back ends didn't right you cannot control it as a driver even though you turn opposite walk now there again he's quite a ways away from that white line is you and I have discussed but he almost caught it it started on very early and it went straight and then he to doubt he did what you're supposed to do when you spin it unknowable they always tell you you have to bring the car down to the left and don't forget that's at over 200 miles an hour and he's calm cool collected looking at the left-hand side to see where he's going then he releases his foot off the brake [Music] away from the white mining bill powers move was not to move just to stay in the right place and trot instead of trying to avoid sato is back under [Music] let's run around trying to catch up go to mule mix three let's stay out all the tires are up - be careful while the rest of the field is coming in all the leaders led by Ed carpenter and Marco Andretti here comes the parade and Vince Walsh you're up first they still try to get a handle on his race car they've also been focusing on saving some fuel Michael Andretti man was the strategy for hunter-reay asked if he wanted for a wing he said no Jamie [Music] and partnered his team to can you see the biggest movers +34 willpower and James Hinchcliffe they make their way back out on the track gets the biggest break here is Simona de Silvestro she after that drive-through penalty was on the verge of going a lap down she hangs on to the lead lap she's sown in 25th right now stay with us the Indianapolis 500 telecast pretty brought to you by DreamWorks turbo July 17th only in theaters and mother's high performance car care products formulated for fanatics precaution here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after that massage spa [Music] this fit really reminds me of Danny Sullivan's spin and when he kept going in one indy500 he didn't do it coming out of one that did coming out of two where's his car owners we mentioned a legendary AJ Foyt his first time here back in 1958 get an idea just how long that is there was no Daytona 500 there was no Super Bowl and Dwight Eisenhower was the president of only 48 states that's [Music] he's gonna hear that let's get ready here it is now Ryan hunter-reay or six different leader we've had nineteen lead changes and we're getting ready to work click 16 [Music] looks to the inside [Applause] [Music] [Music] there is Scott Dixon in the dyeing target machine restoring a great time to make up time the passcode [Music] preposition and trying to find clean air and they keep moving further back to the driver [Music] who took it past on the restart of the outside so get underneath tummy going [Music] grammar a home in the yellow - bar there is one rookie we think meanwhile up front you've got Brian these restarts though who said it earlier the drivers are giving themselves they can spread out but on the final again he's gonna make it stick [Music] [Music] and everybody stands up and flies it's on a mission right now position [Music] [Applause] James Hinchcliffe so and the inside teammates [Music] thirty-five [Music] coming down the front straightaway will we see another change in the lead edy Carpenter has it looks like he will hold on with this life there you see the number three [Music] all comes down to downforce how much teams that decide to run take more downforce out of it and Pitt's cuffs [Music] to see anything like the things we've seen the top 27 cars are separated by 8 seconds go back a hundred years ago Jules goo from France won this race by over 13 minutes that shows how good these cars are how good the drivers are and how tight the competition has been cameras trying to zero in on Townsend Bell in the number 60 Sunoco machine knew that great yellow car right there towards the back of the pack he has moved into the top 10 started 22nd Rick control and he is happy with this it works bits little just ahead of Townsend Bell in that green car the green Go Daddy takes a look on the outside of hitch movement I've been able to find the sweet spot leading up to this race and they haven't found them yet today [Music] Changez we have by 2 or 3 feet please come out incredibly high not of one more than once it's not that close [Music] we mention the sweet spot that's something the drivers looking for it gives you the comfort to really it doesn't have that now everybody is avoiding passing cars [Music] he injured his hand back in Long Beach in a crash [Music] and it's his thumb actually on his right hand how difficult is it when you have something like that so busy right now in every interview we have seen he has told us I have led this place eight years in a row and he really wants it badly so I think you can probably get in there with a pair of pliers might complain afterwards but he's a pretty tough dude he's now living twelve that he has entered let a total of ten laps so far we've had a total of six liters [Music] there's a lot of wisdom in the canals car has done a lot of these races [Music] so our telecast [Music] on side by side you saw willpower move into third and Tony Kanaan retake the race lead right now Chevrolet has the top eight positions on lap sled has now passed his friend Elio Castroneves on the all-time list this race has not yet finished it's willpower all of a sudden [Music] car just feels dead right now wouldn't you say Scott I mean he's he seems like if you keep the lowest line got a lot of distance between him in the wall as we mentioned the top nine positions are all Chevrolet's and if you want to enter for a chance to win the new 2013 Traverse and a trip for two to the 2014 Indy 500 visit win your chevy.com now to enter and while I'm doing that we new change will probably use to the trunk [Music] I grew up on road forces and on had that much success on ovals has one wonderful race in Dallas Texas he will admit to you that he is not very comfortable on road courses 34 lead changes last year 24 so far today and we have only completed 75 of 200 laps [Music] direction here comes Carlos Williams [Music] and AJ Allmendinger in the mix in that number two right in front there he is past his teammate le pastor that listen now he just seems to marching for whatever he had as far as nervousness was considered in the car number anyone's talked and adjustments inside there were general bars and away checkers who can change that raise our five adjustments inside the car to make it looks like he's done they set these cars up for the race they can get it right throughout the whole race so you have to like guess what the track is going to be and I would say the track is going towards the Penske cars right now because they're both going Jamie he just got around at carpenter let's talk about AJ AJ Allmendinger is hanging and they're having problems were there he said he felt like he lost fifth gear but Roger Penske on the radio coaching his driver for his first time around the Indy 500 it's just like Jane running first sixth and ninth with Elio Castroneves of course looking for victory number four here and down into torque turn number three holding station up front about the most turnout we've seen the race so far today consistently turning laps to shy up to three and twenty miles now an average so probably up to 26 going into the turns still a very fast clip right now for these drivers and has dropped a little bit [Music] about 10 [Music] [Applause] James Hinchcliffe trying to take a peek underneath the 22 immortals survey and it's going to cost him because here comes Simon cause you know in that blue and white car as he gets one he's gonna lose two spots as Townsend Mel goes is all back in 11 12 13 and 14 musicians up front it is willpower looking for his best ever Indianapolis 500 in second place Tony Kanaan of courses good friend Elio Castroneves is one in three times he's led this race 90 different times in the 12 races he's been in but has never wanna see his best finish back in O 4 in second place Ryan hunter-reay looking for his first win as well but Marco Andretti right behind his teammate about to be passed by the manos [Music] he has not been in an open-wheel car for seven years so as he gets around and read let's get an update on Marco situation this is the deepest we have seen him Jamie a little yes and surprisingly he staying called on the radio talking a lawyer he strategist losing too many spots too fast here let's do a front wing adjustment on the next stock we're hearing he was very emphatic about that he says I've learned a lot about what I need to do differently to win this race and so far he has not put his car at risk and we've seen him do that before [Music] - looking for that elusive fourth victory he's just sitting in there and doing laps munos put some pressure on him Vince what are you hearing about that 26 they've been very happy with the race car and particularly plays with the way this young racer has handled the job today made any changes to the car the first couple of stops but they are going to give him a little front wing the next time they come through in about five or six laps from now those two as you see food stick to go slow again when he comes back so he takes the position you see Alex 10 Tagliani and the blue car and then right behind him in tenth position [Music] [Applause] [Music] more dirty here it's a bit of money don't do pork we're back here hang in there take it there this try to stick with this Kaiser taking off means the front of the car is not gripping as much and they really come out of the fog let them there you saw tag nanny he is the front-running honda machine we drop back to Dario Franchitti and he is actually lost a spot since the restart restart at 16 he dropped back to 17th right now so not at this point but he still has enough time to make some modifications we've been hearing a lot of radio chatter of making adjustments during the front is not working as much as it wanted to Vince you've got mold well they did make a pro wig adjustment on Frankie's car second pit stop because he was experiencing that understeer mid corner and in just a couple of laps ago now he just doesn't have the more changes coming for the town [Music] we are now in the window because there is Tristan devotee as he has made his stop under green [Music] that stop and it looks like our leader willpower will peel off as he prints in down pinmode he last stop on lap 58 [Music] go through some of the best laps I've seen no power do it here you agree with that Scott absolutely Jamie little it's topped with the best he's got it made the car the gun action member front wing adjustments Mon the last stop in that date him on pit road to the team getting the job done so far today for what power who got out in front the car feels pretty good they made the balance better for tires they'll fill it up with Sunoco fuel but see if they decide to go nope car is good [Music] that is one happening Australia let's send it to Vince Walsh [Music] also right behind him canon has loved this race car all day long not a single change has been made and they are not going to make any changes on this stop either the balance has been excellent Jimmy Vasser handling the strategy Erik countess engineer they have been spot on today Kanaan a factor [Music] 8.7 [Music] flag pit stops continue Connor daily and there's a report that there was some flames there momentarily so a tough break for the rookie he is one lap down right now and everything is back to normal and they'll send him back out EJ Viso he led for another lap he's in [Music] but you've been pretty happy just like the other drivers Dixon also service here is Carlos muñoz on the bright side eliwood Castroneves right behind what we're seeing is all the drivers that were in the back of the pack on the last ones that are feeling Scott because you're getting better fuel mileage pushing that air let's send it to Jamie little again Elio Castroneves making his way down he's been very calm the car has been consistent [Music] Dario Franchitti making Castroneves finishes up at eight point he coming on pit lane as well they had to come in under the green walking lap number 93 there is Simona de Silvestro but she goes back out we've had a total of 8 different leaders now 27 region is the man back up from his Ryan hunter-reay is second each a visa is shown in third now it's interesting Marty because Tony Kanaan [Music] one of the fast guys in practice and qualifying qualified 12th didn't lead the leader charter any given [Music] so that cycle pitstops is complete Tony Kanaan is your leader situation [Music] the Indianapolis 500 telecast presented by Go Daddy to you by Verizon official Wireless partner of the IZOD IndyCar Series and Sunoco the official fuel of IndyCar second place is AJ Allmendinger that's right the rookie is first time as you see them stat on Tony and look at AJ take the lead Jamie what is going on with the to card looks like [Music] during issues he said they just had too much downpours earlier to make made some adjustments freed that car [Music] the point let's show you what happened doing great from 4th to 2nd coming off you've seen a lot of passes down today and even pretty impressive when you get two guys at the same time so that means he timed it correctly coming out of form so need to believe standing up there clapping along the front stretch where our booth is so that's nice to see we had that he's an American [Music] somebody would be halfway home in the series champion just keep smirking in that top six he has a lot of experience he knows what to do to win this race I think he has a car that doesn't have any [Music] which I find pretty amazing I think two wards and this next hundred laps you will see him start to move his way officially [Music] a little late [Music] they were disappointed because he was run under national guard colors then and ready akin on battling back and forth swampy they've led 31 laps Takuma Sato spotted State [Music] she's running eight right now so that gets her caught up so Dario Franchitti he is the other man that could win in d5 48 seconds behind race [Music] rookie obviously not a rookie and experienced but a rookie here [Music] beginning and they seem to have gotten past that our call earlier they had a gear change [Music] AJ Allmendinger he was suspended last year after he failed a when a spark went through the remote recovery program came back lost his nascar ride but then he did get this opportunity in his talk I know this is my last opportunity I know no matter what happens whether it's here or NASCAR or whatever that this is this is the last chance I got my big mess up and there's many people that don't get a second chance and I've been given a second chance so I've worked my butt off and I'm doing everything I can I'm I'm ready to go and as I said if it's good enough then great if not at least I can look at myself in the mirror and say that's all I can do the 97 that was the very popular driver still hangs around the go-kart tracks the speaks to a lot of a young man I attend with my son Michael it's interesting to see how a lot of Contras love carding they stay involved in it but he's the guy that speaks to all the young Carters and tells him what they need to do to move up through the ranks great view from high above in the Oh daddy hello Pam [Music] not to be negative she was burning a lot slowly you look you are the one guy I can always count on to be thinking about that oh so precious fuel but you're right he's out front he's a big chunk of air [Music] we're working lap number 105 of 200 our telecast presented by Go Daddy back here at the Indianapolis 500 you are looking at ending rookie AJ Allmendinger he is leading the race right is our ninth different leader we've had 29 lead changes now of course the last seven years he's been running a NASCAR and that brings us to Regan Smith as he looks to maintain his points lead over Sam Hornish Jr when they visit the Monster Mile Dover International Speedway the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Dover its presented by grip to our coverage begins Saturday 2:00 Eastern on espn2 AJ Allmendinger followed by Tony Kanaan one of the great stories today Marty is that we have two drivers going for a fourth win here at the Indianapolis 500 Elio Castroneves telling me and having Dario in that company makes him hungrier he wants to be the first to get that fourth win that would make him the youngest ever to do it at 38 years old Vince Alex Tagliani having a very solid a current I heard Steve doing one the Indianapolis 500 two years ago with Dan Wheldon at the wheel tags has been rock solid throughout the course of this day really likes his car now on the inside exactly retired Reinbold racing missus out of sponsorship they put everything they have into the if they're to continue on they've got to win today what a tall task for Serbian company and Carlos muñoz 21 years old the youngest driver ever to start on the front row in Indianapolis and he's having a solid day there are a lot of veterans concerned about Munoz but he's been adjustment let this field to green LED a lot early but the car just started backing up so they had too much downforce which is [Music] Road right now having some issues they're gonna look at the right tire they're saying look at the tire he thinks he may have a cut tire as it count him down he was our leader watched the team Roger Penske on the wall to the right standing there calling him saying we're gonna get up hold it here hold it here let's look at it they're adjusting inside the race car I think reaching inside the cockpit there I think his belt came loose because it looked like the crew then reached inside and it's a 6 way crowns your race leader let's listen in on the radio that we just captured from Asia it was the and you can't drive around here driving up three-and-a-half four G's will return any that tells you that policy or something on there one quick class can drive around there but it might be the most stupid thing you've ever done in life all right he's gone a lap down does he have a chance now like 1:13 these off strategy if by some reason the strategy changes he can find himself at an advantage but right now he's got a lot of saga to make up he's got to get to the father's [Music] [Applause] well you know you were talking about not one to drive 1978 rookie year from Rick Mears [Music] meanwhile let's get back to the action of publican citizens [Music] and three and custom nemesis [Music] [Applause] now he's one lap down DJ diesel swinging low underneath a low caste and Amazon's gonna be tight gets it done [Music] [Music] at least racing right now mr. Saar last year stay close to [Music] camping contention and it's gonna change so much the last 20 in the last ten last five Watson last night here's the last lap we have had to go 84 Takuma Sato heading for pit road we're being told and there is tikka masala bring the car in Larry where's Ben on the radio talking with him [Music] in 22nd when you came in surely why'd as they come across the strike [Music] bees Oh down low he's now the second car in line that might be the world's fastest traffic they 25.9 Carpenter is starting to fight his way back [Music] you find yourself falling back you have to completely change your mental attitude too meeting your way up again well and one of the things I found interesting about it he says I never tried script just past another car on the outside [Music] put him in the sixth position [Music] here comes AJ Allmendinger now remember tires but he is Allah running in the 23rd spot he was very right there that he did not be pushing the issue because we were getting too late [Music] [Applause] I'm sticking well got head coming out of the corner how would you like to be my client ready right now and ready [Music] Nolan missings James Hinchcliffe something happens to [Music] a lot of experiencer the exception of Carlos - and you can see where though running a couple years ago when he bought out his partners he moved from Nazareth Pennsylvania both Indianapolis is in the shop [Music] has been a slow progression and [Music] fifteen Vince give us an update on here to play music yeah you showed the success of all those other under any cars and then hitch poof sitting 15th and they have struggled with the handling of the racecar throughout the course of the afternoon wing adjustments and some downforce he says the string [Music] into the car trying to pass the handling completely goes away very difficult another lead swamped at the front you've got Marco Andretti boy [Applause] [Music] it won't at the stripe because his surrendering before he gets the official and let's go to this machine they have not touched it not a single adjustment has been made to the 11 all day he's led laps he's been at the front nine times in his 12 years at Indianapolis and he seems although we're a long way away like he's got a car again fuel and Firestone tires for the 11 of Tony Kanaan it's been we're seeing about 31 laps on this cycle for everybody that has clearly come into pit lane areas [Music] let's check in with Vince in 2008 and he felt like he was poised to win this race this year after winning the championship a year ago cars not been perfect experience a little bit of a vibration on that last one they had trouble getting the fuel hose hit on that particular stop and see if it takes him a tick longer [Music] these are doing great I take notes [Music] - Lee Jenkins - Munoz is your wave events Palace videos for tires come in here running his only IndyCar Series race ever up through the Indy Lights four tires in just a turn of front wing Jamie with 77 to go we'll talk about now let's get to Alex Alex Tagliani coming in being reminded please hit your March they are going to make a slight air pressure adjustment on this 98 by the way the 98 it's the 50th anniversary of paronella Jones win here at Indianapolis when he carried the 98 on his car how big it would be if they could take it back to Victory Lane today taglioti very strong and pulling away his car as he described it on the radio it's a parable they made significant wing adjustment front and back wing adjustments on that bouncing bell led a lap now he is coming in slowly but surely doing what he needs newsmen moving [Music] now was the car his comment was simply good important to point out he's got nobody on either side of him in the pits music kids in pletely and can get out lately interesting things very yellow car there's the 27 of James Hinchcliffe we've talked all day about how they've been struggling with the handling of this car let's see if they can get we have had 12 liters which ties the record [Music] and look at this action still going on [Music] and ready Tony Kanaan EJ Viso and Elio Castroneves there is Marco coming back out checks the mirrors our telecast presented by GoDaddy [Music] 71 laps to go here at the Indianapolis 500 you're looking at the race leader Marco Andretti we have had 38 official lead changes at the stripe a new all-time record breaking last year's mark and if we have [Music] at 12 minutes exactly a third of this field has led this race today tonight on ESPN it's a National League East battle on Sunday Night Baseball Justin Upton leads the Braves against David Wright in the meds versus New York it's tonight and eight it's on ESPN and it's also live watch ESP so all the trauma that we thought would occur has occurred has been constant passing up front as you saw from the GoDaddy helicam here comes Ryan hunter-reay around his teammate to take the lead [Music] we see another pass going into turn number one looks like Marcos gonna be content to just sit in second now their teammate James Hinchcliffe he want me to be running at all or his way to hide her as you see up in the gray and he's been driving that car very hard pushing into the turn past the limit of the car almost hits the wall comes over to the left almost takes out his fellow Canadian [Music] and while we're doing that [Music] all right we showed you what happened to James hitchmate we told these front 18 beds is his heart beating normal again I won't tell you what you know they say this race can be the most fun if you've got a good car there you saw what a handful take your hands off the wheel that really is a handful I've never seen anybody do that your hands off at the car riding a horse and letting it ride for a little bit then jumping back on again [ __ ] is riding just moved in the second place around Lyon jevs oh but it is Andretti Autosport running one two three Jamie little Marco Andretti has been calm on the ready all day until now the team telling him don't fall back farther than third place [Music] to worry about that isn't it it's to go to work [Music] and here's something we've been keeping track of this year we're changes have taken place 13 in two tournaments stretch six the back stretch wants what it looks like if we're looking ahead turn one two best shot it's a little function of the wind because you have a headwind going into turn once lemon is the car that's out in front [Music] the wind and slingshotting up that's remember rush to the end look at the lights on your screen the fourth car and is AJ Allmendinger remember he has stayed up he's about nine yards off sequence here yes he is he came in at lap 112 because of his seatbelt coming loose so they were able to fill it up and put [Music] change to the lead once again Ryan iterated to the point but back to AJ Allmendinger [Music] AJ Allmendinger's moved up the third Jaime that's how quick he is right now [Music] he was frustrated because he's falling behind but he's starting to save his fuel there's one other guy that showed a lot of a strategy looking on their going for second that is the man back in sixth Elio Castroneves he's the only one in the top drivers that has not led a single win today so le oh just pay playing the patient game six meanwhile AJ Allmendinger's saying I got the town pedal down and here we come the reason he has the so AJ Allmendinger comes back after a setback on pit road and he is in front over Ryan hunter-reay Marco Andretti EJ Viso and Tony Kanaan will be back after a word from our ABC stations the Indianapolis 500 telecast presented by GoDaddy to you by new axe apollo leave a man come back a hero and progressive making it easy to bundle your home and car insurance in a real car is leader he's got ten laps over the field yellow but he is running very strong [Music] third place it is Ryan I should say second place Ryan hunter-reay and let's check in with vince lombardi they're exactly where they want to be in second place he wants to be in [Music] don't let anybody know fine don't let anybody else by even if you help you build only anybody I'll buy and really the reason for that is that he knows our Allmendinger house which will then put Ryan [Music] we're also here we don't know how far that is off but certainly you want to stay up front to get closer to the end of the race here Michael is having to taking everything in donors in so all the [ __ ] peels off and he is right at 30 laps [Music] Vincent yours [Music] that's AJ Allmendinger you see coming to the pit lane and all been well-documented his run to the IndyCar Series after his time in NASCAR they've been happy with his race cars he pulls it in Kaminsky calling the shots four-tire change as they always do IndyCar Jay you saying on the radio for hey Jade keep diggin or good for right [Music] to be handsome [Music] look at Marco here he goes because Castroneves is quite behind and casted episode [Music] and all the sudden here with 56 laps ago starts to flex his muscle but the turret ready cars were told to not use fuel and they are trying to drag the soil you dive to lose them both side in the track i think mike miss instructions are Ryan hunter-reay [ __ ] don't let anybody past even if you have to use fuel anybody up front [Music] [Applause] nemesis get a look from his number three Team Penske car live streaming of in-car cameras on horizon and there goes Marco to the inside so he's going to drop back there's not a worse place to be they just have fuel tires is now back out what he wants to try and do although he's not going quick enough yet looks like he thought he might get passed by in front in the lead lap his job right now stay in a bunt if you can but this has grown from our moments around the track trying to stretch it out and ready leads this race we've had 13 for most leaders we've already smashed the lead changes were up to 45 and Counting our telecast presented by Go Daddy go [Music] a record-setting day again here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway we said we were going to write some history look at this 13 liters a new record and 45 lead changes and we still have 50 laps to go Marco Andretti up front Jamie little has more and the team looking at their fuel calculations just moments ago they told mark devious you can for the next few laps he went right to the wait played 30 laps it's his last pit stop so 30 seems to be the matter the feathers [Music] it's what they're planning will be the last stop today they want to make it count his team has been getting the job done today now they're telling him come in your box clean no mistakes this race can be won and lost on pit road and today they've been flawless four tires [Music] I like the way this is playing out by now because we are 152 if you have 32 that 82 that means the last 20 laps is going to be a flat race without having to worry about food Ryan hunter-reay is peeled off and heading your way Vince they made some adjustments on this car throughout the course of the day but right now and he likes it he says it's really comfortable they reminded him to warm up the brakes before he came in hit his March perfectly the fuel probe is in be changed loving stop her Ryan hunter-reay trying to stay up front here at the ending that was Bob ten seconds Sebastien Bourdais or service several other parties you could see from that long view have made them pit stops as well list includes Ryan Briscoe Graham Rahal and Simona de Silvestro and I see ed carpenter on pit road there's EJ Viso as well they Vince Tony Kanaan it's been a perfect kind of day just the kind of car you want here at Indianapolis over the course of five hundred miles no changes on that car is all for canonical and now you see ed carpenter in the box back to Kanaan again no changes in the trouble getting the pros out let's go to Jamie Matt Carpenter started the day on the pole even adjusting his car trying to balance better [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is costly this late in the race taking that meat through for certain as we saw its Elio Castroneves committed the pitch Jamie little [Music] [Music] [Music] Carlos muñoz goes 32 laps Vince Tonio's had never done live before today's with indy500 a difficult was menB slides it into the box hits the marsh perfectly he's been spot on every time he's come to getting the tires on a little bit slow Scott Dixon 14 Scott Dixon now this is lab number he finally comes in so he gets three extra laps whoa he's got a small down the 60 Vince major changes to these race cars both his and his teammate Dario Franchitti today mother last pit stop it was front wake and rear wing adjustments neither have been happy with the balance of their cars or the straightaway speed so Dixon comes in Franchitti is just behind Nixon you see the two of them pitting side-by-side dealing with significant struggles front wing adjustment [Music] Dixon he is away a slore stop for Frankie and he comes through the box it's not been a good day for Dario Franchitti James hits foot he peels off and he'll stop [Music] we [Music] Jorge pots handling the strategy between the engineering team on this 27 car and the driver himself it has been a away and ready as the spot [Music] we have seen very very few mistakes and nothing on the major site like we have in the past the drama still continues to pull back here at the Indianapolis 500 has left 15 laps at 50 Lee changes his or GoDaddy Latin leaders and I can't name one person [Music] at Indianapolis let's listen in on Ryan hunter-reay radio now we're going out the rest of the way against the green light from Michael Andretti and maybe he can show you the reason why look off on the west that is about 45 minutes away so the whole race is changed right now Scott them no longer is a crush I'm trying to save fuel everybody's flat out so I don't really think it's good to be 5th 6th and 7th 5th leading group is made of 7 Park [Applause] lap traffic he is trying to get out of everybody's way holds position that's that 41 car on the left side of your screen and he gets way very difficult to drive a race when you have faster cars coming at you but [Music] playing this the guy that has to pit at lap 170 172 a viii possession Simon passion oh how about a victim room just talking with the team they were saying they think everybody's gonna make one more stop and if that's the case then they're right where they want to be climate as you know has been quietly confident on this car he called it awesome he likes the way it runs in traffic he slowly moved up to where he wanted to be in the top ten he was one of three friends drivers in this race a hundred years ago a Frenchman [Music] and ready but now remember all the ham to stop at roughly nine the ten laps sooner than everybody else that's true but the first three drivers leading 165 laps Carlos muñoz the rookie who has just dazzled everybody for did you think he would do this well I didn't but I thought that if he got through the first pit stop he'd be okay here [Music] this follows by you've got to be really careful [Music] time Salkin on getting around so put TK in the fourth victory here at the 500 Castroneves move in defender who can bet that he knows in a falsity to start the tighten up their game okay here is the freight train that Dario Franchitti has not been able to join [Music] seventy [Music] it doesn't look like it's gonna be dark as there [Music] had the speed they haven't been able he would have to do a lotta passing to get to the front [Music] another guy that's trying to move back success mystical the son [Music] I wouldn't say that's why he's been back there but he slowly took away and guess what that takes it so now we're up to 51 lead changes all that discussion we had about saving fuel that's out the window right now just go as fast as you can that rushed at him Go Daddy helicam great view as you see Ryan hunter-reay looking to the inside of AJ Allmendinger takes the spot so can't read or ten secondly Jamie little what are you hearing down there you can use more fuel but whatever you want to do we're pretty good here don't wanna fall back so of course they're talking about use everything you've got they've got a plan they want to come in with about 20 to go this is gonna be good so means you take some downforce off the cars Ryan hunter-reay goes around his teammate Marco Andretti Vince Welch quick walk in that right just make sure everything's okay now you see there is a bit of actually the second time he's brushed the wall today [Applause] you can see that's not a good [Music] laps ago so it doesn't look good Townsend Bell is back on pit road [Music] he's going slow see a steering wheel how bent that is oh here's the reason why oh yeah that was brilliant driving though catching it like that let's go on board that's what we call a moment [Music] back in the cars James Hinchcliffe did going through the graphs and that speeds not something you want to do but great recovery had believe here comes mark Oh this is so we're gonna by side thank goodness we have it you won't miss a thing [Music] [Music] my friends ready back in the lead you saw it on side by side 57 mood changes and the final me change you don't want to leave us because look at this in the last three years eight laps or less and this one looks like it is going to be a shootout you shot AJ Allmendinger he made slash stop [Applause] he could go the distance everybody would be able to go the distance they've turned the full mixer to full powers fast as they can has pitted he's good to the end as you mentioned Marty this group that were looking at now expect [Music] Takuma Sato has made his final stop let's send it to Rick Takuma Sato brings the car in once again it causes a problem but he has come back well [Music] it's gonna be enough to catch up [Music] Racing right now all the eyes are up front as here we go again nobody can keep the lead for more than a lot [Music] nothing is safe I mean you can do it before the stripe coming up [Music] it's been amazing changed the way that this game has played since last year and all the teams have tried to find ways around it but there's no chance [Music] and 20 cards are still on the leader [Music] five laps until we start seeing pit stops for these guys [Music] he's smart because he's now starting to move his way up he wants to be at the head of the queue and and you can't say he's driven like a movie news you can ask him he got his kid stops right now [Music] here comes the race leader's pale [Music] Jerry [Music] wing adjustment TK the sentimental favorite trying to win it here and Jerry unfortunately Sebastien Bourdais slams a common slams the callee with his fists [Music] and we are still green [Music] so we're gonna keep racing for the last 61 we have completed 79 [Music] let's go back and show you what happened in Sebastien Bourdais second car [Music] just marking up the breaks on the way in crashes by himself that's why he was so mad when we saw him pulling into his pit box brakes are just getting caught in that situation and you know that these are carbon fiber brakes sometimes you have to warm him up going down the backstretch [Music] a while ago they wanted to trim it out here for the final stop discount the team has made every pitstop count for him they have been on it Marco has been great only one time did he get frustrated on that break here today now hold him back he has run up front and led so many laps of this race this is when it counts great job by the team claps all around Marty that rear wing makes it a lot faster in the straightaway you have to get the balance right but it will give you probably an extra mile or two per hour which I think they're gonna need [Music] now that is leader Carlos muñoz going around slower traffic [Applause] Honore is it for his final stop Vince Ryan hunter-reay and Marco Andretti had a discussion about whether or not they were going to put more downforce back in the car that they had taken out earlier they decided not to do it no changes nine point one seconds an excellent stop a rookie continue as muñoz running out well it's been 26 laps since his pit stop but remember he went [Music] last stint you mentioned just three yellow so far but we've had an average Race speed right now 191 miles an hour Rick Scion passion of once again quietly working his way forward he was fastest time today they doing quit stop no changes heat makes at the end of his race he can win it when he's up close and he is his last foot these last laps is the first time that we've seen anybody break away like that Marcus even but he has told me to work with him [Music] never shown in second place right now but he just took down for a side of the car so people publicly doing them will be looking at a monitoring and we'll be doing faster speeds than he was before right well Justin Wilson has had that kind of car that he was great going into the race but they had a number of issues all the way through but he's managed to move his way up the problem and he's not where he wants to be Vince [Music] Scott Nixon just pulling out of his pits after a final pit stop it's not been the kind of day that you [Music] who knows to make his stop he's got 29 laps after nemesis gone 30 and there is Tony Kanaan [Music] [Applause] munos you got a clip all the way down [Music] sixty miles an hour remember as we told you before this is the first place he's ever done live hit stops and he's been great in getting into the box each time perfectly not too close to the wall they said they need one more good one from him shoots his overshoots his mark just a little bit fuel is in the tires are going then let's go to Jamie and Elio Castroneves been very smooth today they will take wonderful the change [Music] time to get a little bit of contact on the exit of pit road Marty munos gets out ahead of Elio with willpower [Music] the James Hinchcliffe decided to take over the race lead he is due for a pit stop 63 million changes now [Applause] [Music] let's go back to show you the race off pit road again Carlos Luis the rookie on the right hand side does a little evasive maneuver Helio Castroneves gasses it tries to come out in front another view head-on I mean as a driver you leave the pit box here the back end sliding around you are just calculating where you can fit in and Elio did a tremendous job not to take James Hinchcliffe still your race leader 29 seconds back in second but he also hope these guys doesn't look like it's gonna be either they just seemed like [Music] here comes Hinchcliffe final stop now remember because he's been out there longer they can make a quicker stop the lead was fuel our character Barney [Music] the car to the finish [Music] many mistakes but they haven't had the car to do it today we'll see what they do in the final Stanfield and hits on the right side it was Tony Kanaan getting around right away but here comes Ryan trying to return the favor [Music] the track is getting here you know that politeness we saw in the beginning is going out the way [Music] again [Music] working right [Music] [Applause] [Music] hold on to it this race you're going to hear [Music] getting passed by some cars as we speak keeping on [Music] as Bernard [Music] guys nine years ago Tony Kanaan with the Methodist Hospital she was having brains so you need some good luck now you need to look 10 pepper Italian the Indy 500 Tony has it with him in the car Tony's cars running maybe 10 feet [Music] [Applause] [Music] easily in either [Music] outside [Music] tighter with every lap he's even doing it down the front straightaway who's gonna lead in the strike [Music] six lead changes [Music] [Music] [Music] right now because he seems to be able to place it [Music] Aikido is gonna be trouble [Music] [Music] now we're gonna see how this dog lives if we get that far number Tony has lost a couple of five hundreds because of the elves [Music] here's what happened [Music] during and then at over 200 miles now you just become a passenger which is exactly what happened to Graham Fraser his sixth Indianapolis 500 the third time is Crashdown it starts here you so he doesn't get a hand injury when we talk about a country think about Tony Kanaan right now running this race with torn ligaments in his left thumb now let's go back to talking about what the right position to be in on this restart one of you leading you would know you're gonna get passed down to turn one [Music] Tony Kanaan wife see her hands trembling so do you think second is the right place to be in or third almost thinking third depending how the wind is punched for him [Music] just plain retired I lived in Brazil and I live here and one of these very emotional conversations he asked me what what am I missing until I can't retire and go back to stay close to him and I said stay in the 500 and as a smart kid it's five years old this as well then as soon as you win you come home right I guess I agree so I kind of didn't say I would retire I said I would go home so I guess if I win I'll catch a plane go see him and I'll catch a plane back to be racing Detroit the following week [Music] [Applause] in second [Music] in the final ten laps six of the last ten years guarantee it's gonna happen again at least once maybe Vince with Michael Andretti and Michael visiting with this team of engineers as his drivers so get ready to battle this one out what a great job you've seen from the kid Munoz but your guy Ryan hunter-reay in the top spot it looks like it's gonna be a shootout what do you expect and what kind of advice can you give your guys here it's gonna be really crazy I don't know what to say you know I'm let me hold my breath for sure last couple laps the front we've seen is not the position to be in because you seem to be a sitting duck is it gonna be a positioning in a battle maybe to position yourself for a second that's what it's gonna come back down to I think the guy to position himself for that last lap these guys gonna win enough downforce or too much in the one car right now now I think we're about right I don't think we could trim any more so I don't think so Jerry with Jimmy Vasser Jimmy does TK have enough left up for the restart to hold on he's got everything he's had all day and he's done a great job at the with the car I think anymore you hear the crowd they're pulling for him so we got the best guy for the job you see we got Tony Kanaan has got to be the sentimental favorite everyone knows how much he has sacrificed to be here now in his 12th why he has come so close he may have a shot to finally win it today [Music] stretch know is going to be good the top five Ryan hunter-reay Tony Kanaan Carlos muñoz and reading and Justin Wilson yes he's in the top five none of them have ever won let's listen to Tony it's radio [Music] [Music] - raking it - it giving an advantage coming out of - down the backstretch - Carlos muñoz when he might be able to get slipstream going into three and then a rookies leading yes last lap passes for the win 96 85 in the last seven years all right we are going to set the stage for you and then we're gonna let you just enjoy it because this is going to be Tony Kanaan top-3 that it is marco andretti justin wilson and don't count out Elio Castroneves in sixth with AJ Allmendinger our seats [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] different nations a piece [Music] we see every good it's so weird to see let's listen to the crowd [Applause] [Music] [Applause] five [Applause] [Music] he's about [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so it's amazing the victim Carlos muñoz is born to finish second and standing you think he was [Music] [Applause] in for money imported for on to finish black version [Applause] [Music] [Applause] frustration the satisfaction of knowing his name again before play [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] absolutely Lauren he did it he did it his dream came true tony is so humbled by this place I know he's going to be so grateful for this day for the rest of his life these guys Eric and Matt and Jeff and all these eleven guys have been behind him for this for so long such a huge team victory Lauren Kenan said he dreamed about it he prayed about it and last night he saw it it was going to happen he heard him on the radio I'm gonna win it or it or or else and he did [Music] cars here live in a second finished third they finish [Music] the quest for four the medicine finishes six Frankie was unofficially listed as 20 [Music] Jimmy you told me he had what he had all day long and then on the radio he said it's win or else and he wanted your thoughts yeah he's yeah he's just awesome in those situations he was great all day I'll credit to the team c-cut mouths they're all the sponsors and Alex had already brought us a little luck today he gave us some who if any no but he he gave us his gold medal from London and we he said rub this all over the guard it's brilliant has special powers and Tony took the medal to his motor on for an hour and can't believe it Indy 500 and go to Victory Lane I think this guy's gonna be quite a go thanks Jimmy Vasser seriously [Music] he has been an inspiration everybody lookin at us at their book as emotional and on very close friends [Music] in motion in this [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I'm stuck with tiny [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the turn maybe we'll be celebrating in person [Music] [Applause] [Music] Chevy engine that Chevy takes the it's Justin Wilson and Phil the top [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Tony Kanaan is celebrating the way to victory the apples [Applause] the burglary place around his neck the congratulatory kiss from his wife Lauren and the bottle of milk he has waited so long to taste the milk at Indianapolis [Applause] Tony it's been 12 years you've waited so long you've been so close what made the difference today I get a little bit of luck today and again it's for the fans it's for my dad that's not here and but mainly for all of you guys I mean like I was looking at the stands and it was unbelievable so uh man I can't believe it you got a good-luck medal returned to you that you'd give it away nine years ago to a young lady that was ill you got a visit from Alex Zanardi this weekend you got the medal that the young lady gave you there it is nine years ago and it was returned to you for good luck today and your friend Alex Zanardi gave you a little good-luck medal as well doubt for you but you earned it in the car today thank you very much I mean I'm speechless I think Vince uh I want to take everybody in the booth I mean I am well even from the other teams you know it's this is it man I made it finally I'm gonna put my ugly face in that trophy he told me yesterday that some drivers make their name at Indian ass [Music] today you're the winner and you're not you will ever forever be known as Tony Kanaan Indianapolis 500 champion I guess we did both we were known for not wienie now we are for winning so uh manna I don't know what to say well what went through your mind when the yellow came out and you knew that you were gonna be the winner I said camera I couldn't believe it and then I'm like how many how many laps to go how many laps to go it was two to go so I said that's it I guess we're and I have to say the last lap was the longest lap on my life now when the pace car to hurry up so bad but I've enjoyed it and again we did it you said you win the Indy 500 you're gonna go home and see your boy you're gonna make that trip here soon I hope so man I think I'm gonna get so busy but he's at home he knows I promised him a trophy and it's a good one you're bringing at home my friend Tony Kanaan has won that ID seventh running of the Indianapolis 500 32 orphans 13 checkered flag we will cherish that as much as the chair enjoy [Applause] [Music] laughs yes written every race has raced has been painted [Music] let's check in with Jamie little Carlos muñoz brings it home second first-ever IndyCar race let alone how were you guys so flawless today and I'm really I'm feeling a bit sad right now I should be happy but I think I had a shot to win this this thing man I think I did a great job I have two nothing to be ashamed of my team just did a great job in the pit stop the car was was so great from the first lap to the last lap I was really passionate if they would take me never take me I was going bye-bye won my first fuse pistol was not so great but in the last the last two were great and I have to be good let's see what my future prepared now now maybe if Tong if we win it Juan Pablo Montoya I'm sure watching on mm winner here we saw you get out of your race car and the emotion what was going through your mind I was more sad because from dealing you have a shot to to overtake or to fight for the win than for the second place meaning a sinkhole Colombia was watching me I couldn't do anything from to to win and it's all respect now I know how it feels to 500 all respects to home problem and this this race is really difficult and I have to think second all my sponsor electric Colombia my family's here and all the support all the Colombian have been here great job Carlos muñoz I have a feeling we're gonna see him back here quite a few more times Marty age 21 and he's disappointed place all right we're gonna be back with a lot more here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway look at the joy inside the cockpit of our champion her 2013 TK Tony Kanaan the Indianapolis 500 telecast presented by godaddy.com I sunoko the official fuel of turbo in theaters July 17th rated PG back here at Indianapolis where Tony Kanaan strife and disappointment and here is Dario Franchitti and you can tell he is okay after tagging the wall and they very moment let's check in with Vince box on what a great embrace it was with his dear friend Alex Zanardi as well and we told the story about how you gave Tony the big gold medal and it was for luck told him rub it on the car I guess he rubbed it a little bit on that car and a little bit on his hands and everything else what was it like for you to be here to see Tony your dear friend win the Indianapolis 500 I tell you I'm starting to think that it really works I'm gonna make it profitable I'm gonna be I'm gonna put it up for sale but no besides kidding I mean it's fantastic it's a dream come true to see Tony win but more than everything to see him win with Jimmy Vasser as a teammate my dear friend Jimmy and I was watching the race the entire race with with max here and we kept you know eating each other and and we couldn't believe that it was going to happen I'm so happy so happy max Pappas with Alex Zanardi tears of joy for their dear friend Tony Kanaan and down here with Elio Castroneves at the top of the show we told everyone watching Elio that you and TK shared a special relationship as youngsters growing up a brotherly love when you were just eight nineteen years old racing go-karts he was so happy when he won three times and he said if you can't win a fourth how do you feel about him getting his first I'm very happy well deserved for him well deserved for his team Tony certainly it is a tough one and I can see that you're fought as hard as you could and all deserve I'm happy for you we talked about it I would be very happy hopefully we can have it now I can have the championship so now we balanced but to your mom someday I know they're for so long so I'm very happy and the goods good job and hopefully I'm it's going to be a busy week you buddy busy week get ready what a special special day for Tony Kanaan and we told you that it was nine years ago at this race and Tony Kanaan was an IndyCar champion he was winning races he had so much good luck and someone told him about a little girl Andrea Brown he was in the hospital at Methodist huh and getting ready to have the aneurysm surgery on her brain it was going to be touch and go with e Tony went down there went to the bedside gave the young lady his good luck Madeline said here you take this this will help you get through it and sure enough the next day the surgery came as she was fine now she is 24 years old and two days ago knowing that Tony Kanaan her favorite racecar driver were struggling and still chasing the dream she over nodded the medal it came to the racetrack and they went to the garage to present over to Tony's he began to prize the note with the medal said this here's your good luck charm back now you take it and win the Indianapolis 500 and indeed that's exactly what he did today a good luck charm comes home is coming right out of his pocket and he had it with him for all 500 miles still more to come here as you can see the celebration continues at Indianapolis back here at Indianapolis the celebration continues three generations of the Andretti's [Music] [Music] extra mile and it is the pass on the [Music] right hand side excellent time to move [Music] with marco andretti market was just watching that final restart what a race and take us through those final couple laps from your teeth yeah I mean it was kind of unfortunate we got shuffled back right as we trimmed which you know from that standpoint a little frustrating also frustrated because fourth is about as far back as we were all day so having said that I think TK if there's anybody that deserves to win it's him so congratulations you know I think we're frustrated but the overall picture were leading the points now so you know even though it's early it still feels good Marco Andretti wanted to wind it to put the Andretti name back in victory lane that when Tony Kanaan came by he was one of the first to run over and jump in the pace car to get Tony Kanaan a hug Jamie little Mario Andretti of course the grandfather of Marco the emotions here it's been 44 years since your win here we thought maybe that streak would and what were the emotions as he led and then of course he ended up for well riveting from the beginning to end obviously and coming out know that you're in a play you know and then the things that are out of your control so but you know I was just a bit phenomenal race the team just was up there fighting all day and you know if it would have gone who knows to the checker you would have seen who knows maybe a different result but that see you know it's a popular win for Tony Kanaan he was strong there all day so congratulations to him and you know Marco has a lot of years ahead of him got Willie so we have a lot of fight in us and a fight right now you guys are the point leaders so to be continued Marty to be guarantee that they will be back let's show you some of the records that we set today most leaders 14 lead changes we doubled last year and the average speed a hundred and eighty seven point four we only had five parts the Indianapolis 500 telecast presented by Go Daddy you small business wins with the website from GoDaddy and royal purple the performance oil been outperforming Tony said his ugly face will finally be on the board it'll be 200 likeness on that treasured trophy all right here's Dario Franchitti and it was never his day today no went inside hang on everybody hang on pehle fourth win down in the cards today what did you deal with what was the struggle today Daria unique movements you name it we were garish alike back there and a draft so weak and she couldn't make a pass even we could get close enough but very loose car in the middle of the corner big understeer coming off massive massive imbalance all day from cold tires to the middle of run to the end of the run so just lack of grip really and you know we tried to make something happen there then didn't take tires that last stop and you know went down to one then you can see I've turned there there's no point turn it anymore because there's no grip there so I was just trying to shallow the angle and trying to get away with it it was a big hit and then I looked round and I saw that Pete DK was p1 and that cheered me up just a little bit there you know we come here to win we come here to challenge and these shows are divot on this play says we've missed it with all both target cars we were out to lunch today but we've gotta write a lot we didn't today Tony and his guys did and I couldn't be happier for him thanks Dario Marty so Dario puts a smile on his face but deep down inside you know he's heartbroken and that quest for number four Tony Kanaan takes the width here is first in 12 years of try and the Indianapolis 500 let's take a look at the unofficial results behind Tony running away Marco Andretti Justin Wilson rounding out the top Simon passion and our pole-sitter rounding up if all of Soviet one investor to free massage stop Dixon and fifteen Gotye Simona de Silvestro VJ visa willpower and there is positions 21 through 30 as getting ready to go down trackside and get ready for kissing moments [Music] another the traditions here at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway kissing the yard of bricks let's send it down to Jerry punch with pole sitter ed carpenter add a lot of speed early not much late what happened we had to speed I think we just got shuffled back a little too far and probably little light on downforce and and could never fight our way back to the front so the field was so competitive it was it was a great race so really happy for Tony he's going to be a great champion for the new Annapolis 500 and I always gotta wait a year to come back and try it again not a bad day for red carpet our starting on the pole finishing with the top 10 all right Thank You doc and the frustration there you can see was evident on his face he thought he had a really good chance today and here's the solute from head the emotions are incredible had explained right now exactly what he is feeling and it won't it from white a while you have tasted the milk your impression before I talk about Tony Kanaan I have to say that the beat the car race I have ever seen there were so many passes such a difficult track to drive on and I think that the right driver won the race I think for Tony Kanaan who knows that his career is winding down this is a very well-deserved victory a fan favorite and no doubt who will be a great champion and there you see as he came across under the caution but it didn't matter to him 68 lead changes and he live after the last one back in Indianapolis on that last restart Ryan hunter-reay got past but he thought he was in the perfect place he thought he would be able to win the race collapse be able to make a little morning sense is when preparation execution and fortune and did today coming up next on ABC ins x-games Barcelona and next week the indeed or Detroit on ABC book Saturday and Sunday for our entire ESPN on ABC - I'm not agree shall we meet again [Music] it is said that she picks the winner [Music] Indianapolis Motor Speedway with their contours in her straightaways hedged by legends who in their best moments carved their own likeness into immortality a destiny that she decides our hildebrand a destiny that five for 11 years she denied him I'm be treating this track extremely nice to see if she will pick me Tony Kanaan glimpsed victory only to be let down time and again until today [Music] the sweet taste of victory is left best by those who have known thirst [Applause]
