hi i'm donna jordan from jordan fabrics today i'm going to show you how to make a pattern called double dipping now this is a very interesting pattern because as we make the blocks for this quilt here we're going to use the scrap pieces to make this second quilt so this is not a pattern that you can make this one or this one you make both at the same time we're going to double-dip we're going to get two quilts at once so this pattern has instructions for six different sizes of quilts so I'm gonna make the throw size which takes 40 jelly roll strips and that's basically one jelly roll and I'm gonna use one from Robert Kaufman called serenity Lake and it's got all these nice rich jewel tones aquas Purple's greens we are also gonna need some background so I'm gonna need 3 yards of background and I'm going to use solid black because I think the fabrics will look really rich on there so I'm gonna go ahead and get my background cut out I can't give you all the sizes because it's not my pattern but cozy quilt designs are very well written I've made a ton of them and they're very easy to follow now we're going to take all of our jelly roll strips and all the strips we cut and we're gonna make some strip units so take one of each let's put the background down first and then one of our batik strips and you know with fatigue you can't always tell which is the right and the wrong side if you can't tell it doesn't really matter which side you put down now we are going to use a quarter inch seam allowance and we're gonna stitch all the way down this long side you now don't stretch either one just lay them very carefully one on top of the other go all the way down so we need to stitch all of our strips together like this one background one print now this is real important when after you stitch them together half of the strip units are going to get pressed and I like to finger press first with the seam allowance going toward the print half of them are going to get pressed that way and the other half are all going to get pressed with the seam going towards the background now we're going to take one of these that has the seam allowance toward the black and one that has the seam allowance toward the print and we're going to put them right sides together we're going to put the the black on the black and the print on the print and we're going to stitch all down this long edge it's a little hard to see if you've got your edges lined up when the colors are so close but you can do it [Music] now I'm just going to turn it around and stitch down the other side so we'll make sure it's nicely lined up here stitch all the way down now we're going to want to iron this up a little bit each tube so even though we finger pressed it it is nice to keep it nice and flat so I'm just gonna give it a little steam and the reason it lays so nice and flat is because that seems going that way and that seams going that way and they're actually nesting they're right up next to each other so we've got a really flat tube now now we're going to cut up each of our strip tubes exactly the same way and I'm gonna use this ruler that's called a strip tube ruler now the pattern will give you instructions if you don't have this but it's a very handy item and I use it a lot so we're gonna find the line that it tells us in the pattern and we're gonna put that line on our stitching line not on the cut edge on the stitching line and I'm gonna hold it in place and I'm going to cut on both sides so I'm gonna cut that off slide it away a little bit and then cut that now since this was a tube when we open it up we're going to have a square now we're going to take our ruler turn it around line it up on the stitching line again and make one more cut so keep flipping and cutting and sometimes you're going to have to cut a little bit off like we're going to have about a half inch there so I'm gonna cut here and then I'm gonna cut a little bit more off so sometimes you can line up on the end like right here but sometimes you have to cut a little bit off but just keep flipping and cutting until you've cut up the whole tube now a good tip is to take some tape I've got painters tape here it's like masking tape it's not very sticky and it won't leave a residue and put it on your rule on the line that you're going to use because that way you can easily move this up to your stitching and you will know that everyone will get cut the same without having to measure each time so I've got everything cut out and you'll notice half of the squares have that background in the middle and the other half have the boutique's in the middle and so each stack is going to make one of the quilts there so to iron them up all we're going to do is peel this open very carefully Pat it with your fingers a little bit and then just give it a little pressing the last step is to cut off any dog ears that you've got around the edges and I only have one on some of these because of the way they were cut everything is ready for us to lay the quilts out so let's start with the quilt that has the colorful blocks in the middle now for this quilt here we have options when we lay out the blocks depending on which way you turn the blocks you can get a lot of different looks I really like this one the best so that's how I'm gonna lay out my blocks so I'm gonna start out by just laying the blocks out in the direction that they need to be laid and when I'm done laying the whole quilt out I will trade up the colors so I don't end up with all of this color in one section of the quilt alright there's the whole quilt laid out and I might trade a few blocks because I've got two blocks that are exactly the same right there so no problem we can just take something from here switch it out a little bit these two are the same I can just move that guy there that guy there and you if you don't like the look of the block one way you can just flip it upside down now this is really nice because it has the center motif it gets bigger and bigger and it's really easy to stitch this into a quilt you just stitch your rows together and then stitch all let's fit make your rows and then stitch them all together there's no fancy matching or anything but do keep in mind all of the edges are bias so you want to be careful you don't stretch as you so now let's lay out the second quilt we can use the same layout page but keep in mind wherever it's showing colors here that's gonna be where your background is gonna go so that's gonna be where our black is going to go I used this layout for the first quilt and I'm gonna try this one for this second cloth so each four squares is going to make kind of a circle shape there so I'm gonna start laying it out and spread it out all over the table here there I think I've got the colors nicely spread out so I always stand back after I'm done make sure I don't have too much of one color all in one section of the quilt again so everything in two rows so the rows together then we'll get the borders on and we'll get both quilts on in the quilting machine I've got the quilt too all load it up on the machine and there's lots of colors that will look really good for your quilting here now this light lavender that's gonna blend in pretty well it's gonna show quite a bit on the black the green is pretty bright again it won't show much in the print it'll show in the black but I think I'm gonna go with this dusty purple that's going to blend in with the patchwork and it's gonna blend in a little better on the black area there I'm going to use a quilting design called bloomin feathers I really like the way this looks it has a hint of a flower there but it's very swirly and I think that'll look really nice on the patchwork [Applause] the second quilt is all loaded up I'm really happy with how this one turned out because we have all this nice solid area here and I'm going to use a contrasting color thread so I want to use something bright the green is definitely bright that will show up purple shows up mmm not that much but that would that would work a little bit blue or purple would work now this one there's a lot of aqua in the prints and this is nice and bright I think that'll be our best choice for the quilting pattern I'm going to use the same pattern that I used on the first quilt but I'm gonna do it smaller so I did a practice one here and another practice one here that's quite a bit smaller and I'm going to have a lot of thread showing with this denser print and when both quilts are done we will compare the size [Applause] but the first quilt all done here got the binding on so I used the same fabric for the border and the binding because it only took a yard for this 55 by 65 inch quilt it's really nice with all those colorful boutiques around the central motif getting bigger and bigger I'm just gonna slide this one over so we can look at the second quilt very happy with how this one turned out as well and you can see that very dense quilting on it there so that thread fills up all this negative space here and I just love how it gives it some texture and that bright turquoise thread shows up very very nicely again on this quilt I've got the inside border the same as the binding and you can see you can see the pattern here next to this one exact same quilting pattern but much bigger here and the cool ting denseness is really a matter of personal preference a lot of our customers like just a little quilting like this I personally like a lot of quilting but that's the nice thing about the quilting hobby you get to pick what you like and you get to make that quilt just the way you want now when I was making both quilts I really thought I was going to like this quilt better cuz I liked seeing all of the boutiques but now that they're done I like this one better so leave me a comment let me know which one do you like better thanks for watching our
