this is a food illegal in the biggest city in the usa that just makes it more rare more interesting and more exotic especially in vietnam this is topping our burger [Applause] the hamburger the recipe is simple all you need is buns burger bun cpr and beef the rest is up to you is it ham is it bird and does it so just a hamburger now this classic american food can be found all around the globe with each country and each chef giving it their own twist when i think of a yummy hamburger the last place i'd expect to find it is at a sushi place [Music] today we'll see what happens when you apply unlimited resource it's like everything i have in my fridge and super high-end ingredients to this humble dish lots of gold useless flakes that i can poop out one day we'll be trying out very affordable there's no indoor seating here or outdoor seating and very very expensive burgers have you ever eaten a burger in a wine room so does more money mean a better hamburger my wallet needs to rethink or is it better to keep things simple it's a mess let's find out [Music] hamburgers it's everybody's favorite food but what about three hamburgers at three different price amounts of money that's what we're doing today welcome back to bang for your buck burgers have been around in vietnam for less than a generation even mcdonald's only opened here in 2014 but this classic american dish has come a long way in a short time today we've got three burgers one winner and two lucky dudes doing the eating me and some guy named nam welcome to the show my dude does not mean five or a year or something else it's like when the cookie monster eats and it goes oh is that what it is nam he's 24 from arizona and he's eaten food nearly every day of his life i am excited today he'll do his best to help me navigate the complex and overwhelming world of burgers do you speak vietnamese probably enough to survive can you try telling her what's happening and i'm and say hamburger we've come to chiangnui a very affordable burger stop loved among locals they sell over 1 000 per day they're famous for their add-ons you want a plain jane burger no problem you want to add on a chicken filet a shrimp patty smoked sausage an egg in a can of tuna you can do that too so they say the specialty here is the stacks for example we can get 20 patties if we want really and she said it was about this big and it was over a hundred thousand dollars a hundred thousand dollars our first burger of the day is simple and straightforward one spoon of butter fresh lettuce then a violent saucing occurs ketchup chili sauce and mayonnaise next the beef a well-seasoned fried patty blanketed with a slice of processed cheese bun to completion and eat there's no indoor seating here or outdoor seating there's no seating of any kind no we got these seeds from next door we got these plates from next door okay i'm looking at this i see thin patty the bun is not very dense but it matches the thickness of the patty there's cheese on there it's kind of half melted there's a lettuce so there's something green just go for it [Music] i'm not mad oh this didn't make you angry that's good what happened you're not in control of cutting hair moist button seasoned meat i wouldn't do so much chili sauce i think it's the chili that overpowers the pad it's a bit on the thin side like me like us this is pretty satisfying for how cheap it is this is their base level burger so we have a good anchor point but now we're going to go up a little bit in price and in volume and that's coming up now no dom and i are taking advantage of the famous add-ons available here making the tallest burger possible filled first with the chicken filet cheese then two halves of instant sausage more lettuce more cheese a shrimp patty more sauces a fried egg cheese again then smoked sausage a freaking beef patty and one last fun square now that is a burger i don't know where to bite there's only one way [Music] oh i just cut myself with this is that blood or ketchup oh just blood every time i bite into it i'm feeling joy there's so much meat and protein and sauce it's just very packed with sodium it just became much more manageable i can't say i don't like it i like it there's nothing not to like this burger goes against almost every religion the muslim diet the jewish diet the hindu diet the vegan diet it's nearly impossible to eat drop a little bit of it and that's still good food it can be put into another burger this whole thing only seven dollars how much do you think this burger would cost if you're in the usa at least like fifty dollars do i have sauce on my face be honest nah you're good oh this is really embarrassing what's your name again jake it's jake yeah it's crazy right meet jake the founder owner and head chef of jake's jake's origin story starts the same as mine in minnesota since leaving the land of ten thousand lakes he's run barbecue joints in the philippines china and now here in vietnam for the last five years does your northernness reflect in your barbecue i would say a little bit of it does giving it the minnesota twist really dealing with the ketchup-based sauces but i also have a big heart for north carolina-style stuff jake's barbecue prowess is reflected in his barbecue ribs pulled pork sandwiches and bacon ladies this guy makes his own bacon i'm swiping right some things about making bacon are kind of standard across the board with all bacon we're reaching over here already jake's bacon starts where all good bacon starts the pork belly coated with salt pepper and brown sugar and left in the fridge to marinate for seven days when the time comes it smoked for six hours and fried until it's just a bit crispy she is [Music] smoking salty a little bit of sweetness the natural porky sweetness coming out that's a good thickness this is like a perfect blt bacon yes the majority of this does go on all of our sandwiches whether it be our blt or flying pig all of our burgers you don't want people like trying to gnaw through it or whatever we're here today for the triple b what do those big bad bees stand for jake beef bacon and blue cheese okay it almost slipped yeah it almost did beef ground into two patties grilled and seasoned bacon fried until crispy yet juicy blue cheese a hit of sharpness melted on top to cut through the heavy flavors what is it that you like about the blue cheese the cheese that we're using today is a danish blue cheese it's a mild type blue it doesn't really have a real pungent or a real hard kick jake like me is a buns man i need a bun that's just like a pillow that i could put my my head on at night so he's worked the local bakery to make the perfect carving cradle for this meaty monstrosity all held in place with a steak knife sorry i'm trying to get air inside that old burger is still inside of me yeah first of all the whole burger's been stabbed this is very clear it's not gonna be like our toothpick incident i just cut myself with this what i like is that he's not put any of the vegetables on the burger ooh i'm a big fan of that the bun oh i'm giving it cpr let's give it mouth to mouth after yeah and i've never seen blue cheese melt like this yeah it's like i'm gonna be a crumble and if you don't like me being a crumble go yourself it's usually with blue cheese exactly yeah wiggles this is one meaty beast that is a textbook bite i had a stretch off camera you guys stretch your jaw wait did you what do you do with your tongue stretch everything [Music] i'm very impressed by these buns it's fortified thick it's soaking up all the juices and not letting anything out the bacon is the perfect texture for a burger stays crispy a little chew to it finally the blue cheese i was really worried about it being overpowering but i feel like it's perfect it's just enough to add something but to not take it over it's coming in at around 30 bucks the next burger one hundred dollars whoa it's really really similar i thought you would have a different one [Music] david nice to meet you pleasure to be here likewise david and his brother patrick started the premium steakhouse el gaucho in vietnam almost 10 years ago in that time they've established the benchmark for contemporary top quality houses of steak in southeast asia the restaurant proudly serves argentinian steakhouse style food how does argentina do steak differently they don't do anything differently they just have the best quality they have and they just put it on the grill without marinating it without doing anything to it just a good rock salt there you go best quality is what el gaucho is bringing to our one hundred dollar burger today we have our most expensive cuts which is a vague filet nine plus and a vagary by seven eight because of the fit and because of the marbling of the meat you know it almost looks like steak combined with homemade truffle mayonnaise and for ground top that's what we do just the best ingredient staying true to their argentinian style the wagyu patty is precisely grilled without seasoning to a medium temperature [Applause] [Music] the foie gras is seared until golden and baked in an oven have you ever had truffle i have not have you ever had foie gras i've never this is like a lot for you and actually it's recently been made illegal in new york that just makes it more rare more interesting and more exhausting especially in vietnam this is a food illegal in the biggest city in the usa this is topping our burger our wagyu foie gras burger is taking shape with a homemade sesame bun truffle mayonnaise and ketchup lettuce fresh onion a slice of tomato a sprinkle of salt the wagyu patty then the foie gras as the crown that is elegance wrapped up in one burger can i note that we're in a wine room have you ever eaten a burger in a wine room i only meet the most important people in one room it's a lot of first for you oh yes first time having truffle have you had wagyu no really never had a wagon oh my god you're like a newborn baby what about radish i've tried radish you tried right okay i like here they've also put a beautiful steak knife into it burger bun cpr now the juices are flowing and here they don't give you a choice they've got the red white and green like the uh what flag is that mexico like the mexican flag the beef itself should be pretty fatty but that foie gras is gonna be like super smooth super fatty okay we should stop talking we should try it out you ready [Music] that's what raw rich and creamy i thought it'd be a little creamier but the flavor is solid fat but not oily fat when you eat foie gras you're like that's why they force feed those ducks maybe if everyone in new york tried it they'd be like oh we're sorry it's really good and then they would you know make it legal again it's like the best beef you can get i thought he was talking he said it would almost be like a steak itself and it is it's gotten so much like body and texture to it it's about medium well but still tender enough right the best patty i've ever had in my life does it slap is that how you tell millennials why you keep spitting food out today am i that funny that was a good bite that one had a little bit of truffle man the foil crowd just makes it work [Music] love it i don't know how readily i'd want to take 100 bucks for my wallet and just part with a single burger one burger that's like a memory for life put it on instagram get likes have girls follow you have them dm you meet the love of your life get married get divorced but you had a kid named wagyu buying a hundred dollar burger led to you having a child named walk you whoo you had to get a little head shaking [Music] there you go it doesn't take a lot of money to make a burger great some good quality meat between the buns will satisfy almost anyone for me the best value today wasn't even one of our main burgers it was that bonus burger monstrosity that seven dollar add-on of almost everything on the menu that one is just too much study you can break it apart and you can have seven different meals that's why i like it it's a good value but the 100 burger is about more than the food itself it's about the story and the experience trying new things like foie gras wagyu truffle i would do things for that burger sunny okay no you want to look at me you don't do anything to me it's about telling your future kids whose college you most certainly cannot afford because of poor buying decisions about that one time
