1995 Week 2 Dolphins at Patriots

[Music] a capacity crowd better than 60,000 turning out of Bucks Borough Stadium on a beautiful 67 degree day in New England as we get set for the Dolphins and the Patriots a matchup of two of the most respected coaches in the NFL fill our cells and as Patriots gunning for the ninth straight regular season went down Schuler and his dolphins hoping to repeat as AFC East champions and they have more far-reaching goals on their minds hi everybody I'm Marv Albert along with Cris Collinsworth now last week Miami knocked off the Jets in a rout 5214 Dan Marino got off to a shaky start then came on strong in the second half but Chris very tough to get a feel for the Dolphins off that kind of game yeah because the Jets played so poorly in that one and really Dan Marino didn't play very well at all you through a couple interceptions in the ball game missed a couple of wide-open receivers that could have been easy touchdowns for him and yet the Dolphins still scored 52 points scary what might happen here today if he gets hot and Bill Parcells was telling us that he does not want Drew Bledsoe getting involved in another shootout with Dan Marino well last year Drew Bledsoe was the entire story if he got hot then the Patriots had a chance to win if not then they didn't have a very good chance but now with rookie Curtis Martin in there who rushed for a hundred yards in his rookie debut something that no Patriots runner did at all last season you have to think the Patriots have a much better chance with this balanced offense Miami has won the toss and they will receive second year man from Syracuse Pat did not have a strong game last week against Cleveland getting set to kick it away to old cave McDuffie and earthing spikes and it's taken by McDuffy across the 20 beautiful spin working his way across the 30-yard line Oh J McDuffie had a terrific all-around game last week returns the opening kick for 29 yards and a look at the Miami offense Richmond Webb and Keith Sims couple of Pro Bowlers on the left side ruddy gray and Heller comprised the offensive line with Dan Marino Keith Byars Bernie firmly a guy who turned it after the two fumbles against the Jets and then came on in the second half former New England Patriot number one traffic Irvin fryer with McDuffie and green and where they go three wide Terry Kirby and Gary Clark the one a come on is down that is David Green back up the running back special teams man being helped off the field last week despite the slow start the Dolphins with four turnovers two fumbles by Parmalee Moreno intercepted twice but the Miami defense helped to lift the Dolphins against what appears to be a very troubled jet club six jet turnovers for the sentence two fumbles by the Miami defensive unit and it's to the ground on the first play very firmly stopped by Chris Slade who was mainly AFC Defensive Player of the Week last week Roberts the other Reggie White and Barnett upfront the linebackers for the Patriots McGinnis Brown but rocky from Colorado Johnson and Chris Slade was outstanding Maurice Hurst hoping to turn it from his battle with Michael Jackson of the Browns last week second and five at the 48-yard line at Foxboro again it is Parmalee to the outside looking for the marker stop by slave interesting by Don Shula already Bernie Farley with the two fumbles a week ago on consecutive plays they're consecutive rushes as a matter of fact comes right out gives him the football twice and he picks up the first down Bernie Farley such a big part of the mix last season for these dolphins when Terry Kirby and Keith Byars got hurt he was really to go to guys [Music] [Applause] was lifted that's sympathetic words running this able to charter the relics family at gambling straight carry stop by tip Johnson a second round draft pick to have very strong game last week Bill Parcells saying that the Colorado defensive scheme very similar to what the Patriots use and that has helped Johnson he's a guy that really had to step up and play they were really stung before the season started when Todd Collins decided to retire and that meant that Todd Johnson had to play right away and ourselves was not very kind [Music] first training unexpected the comments of the linebacking core that appear to be a strength [Music] the swing Ricky Reynolds up from left corner to make the stop so the dolphins stay on the ground here on this opening desert homily on item 10 yard pick up Bernie Parmalee would like to thank Bill Parcells incidentally for his very nice new contract with the Miami Dolphins no question right here just a simple slack gonna hit doubt here in the flat the basic pattern of the Miami Dolphin offense and anytime you start to bite on that slant route just makes it awfully easy for touchdowns I'm sure this one's going to be a confidence builder for him you can tell right away that Dan Marino was going to check his confidence make sure he was back on track was to his go-to guy urban fire but Maurice Hurst there to make the play seasoned Maurice lighting the Patriots seven interceptions that was tied for third a little open her down an town radar what the time anyway okay Macduff covered from the left corner riki rental and a flag has been thrown and as against knowing when the referee is jerry austin illegal use of hands to the face number 92 of the defense five yards automatic that is a newcomer to the Patriot roster second-year man from the University of California quiet from the Green Bay Packers at the end of three season fer Colin's call from that penalty there he is number 92 now they might send him back to Green Bay he does that again third down and ten and then you stop Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins on the opening drive and you hand them the star of this one and they're gonna pick on Ted Johnson the inside linebackers the Patriots trying to play a lot of zone defenses and I don't care who you are dan marina is going to find a way to look that there's a first now split wide to the left that is McDuffy Spike's getting spot duty last week played well in the second half against the Jets late and Johnson combined to make the stop as a five yard advance second down and five for Miami 15-yard line [Applause] the safety cherry ray play on spikes you know the one thing that Eric green the big tight end for the Miami Dolphins is now given this dolphin attack they were always able to run over to the left side behind Richmond Webb and Keith Simms and so good over there but now you put the big there and green the blocking back out on the right side it had matched up on some of these little corner bags and strong safeties [Applause] for the spirit down well the pitch Parmalee say inside from behind Ted Johnson and Miami playing possession football they've had it right throughout this first quarter and now have a first and goal at the five marwan an outstanding block here by Keith Byars the full-back number 41 coming right at back from knee surgery went down in Game six last season said he's about 75% in terms of what he said it feels much better going in this week than a week ago but he said the major test usually during the week does his kids like didn't jump on it that was morning an impressive drive so far by the Dolphins this May 14th play second and goal we wanted three [Applause] into the end zone at one point looked like an option pass development for whatever reason it just wasn't there there's really nobody out on the pattern well maybe Keith Byars trying to sneak out late but that play was just destroyed from the start and really though it is a running bag when it's not there you don't want to dip outside and lose a couple of yards they're so precious down inside the 5-yard line seven this first quarter six defensive professional the girlfriend they intended receivers and the field-goal unit will kick in dan Marino was unhappy with one of his wide receivers I think that's Gary Clark last week we saw Marino in a couple of screaming matches with Irving fryer that time the Patriots came with the Blitz and give great credit to the secondary of the Patriots there was nobody open which means man coverage out here but Mike Williams the new guy from Jacksonville the wide receiver for Dan Marino is going to go up and just sit when you have man coverage you have to break across the field one way or another and Dan Marino as soon as the play was over said Mike you want to help me out a little bit on that one is that the way you phrase it surly yeah yeah by the third quarter we'll have a different you sort of way to say that well they're still discussing that last play let's see on the pregame show we heard from Dan Marino said well we may go to ball control I don't want fit this guy can run and now Bill Parcells Joe has to look to Drew Bledsoe in the second half yeah they haven't rushed the ball in the first half so I think it's gonna fall on Drew's shoulders did you notice Marino on that hike side he got here's an old veteran but see the reason why he did that that was the corner blitz he's responsible for that normally on inside blitz a bat gets it that corner blitz normally gets their quarterback he saw the thing and he turned and he got that and it's amazing to see a guy that's played that long get that excited and that's why he was pointing the finger that we've gotten this one behind us the hard part is doing that week in and week out when I asked you about your owner Jerry Jones and all the controversy that has been surrounding him what's it like for the players with this circus atmosphere whether it's celebrities and so forth on the sidelines or licensing deals outside the context of NFL properties what's it like for the players we really don't pay that much attention to it the one thing we understand is that Jerry is a pretty controversial individual and he's going to do things on his own terms and I think on the one hand you've got to respect that and I know personally on the other hand then I could see where maybe some other people might be concerned by some of his actions but I say that and tomayto to the best of my knowledge Jerry has not done anything that has been wrong he certainly has just pushed the envelope to the edge a number of occasions but I think that in time we'll all find out that whether or not the actions that Jerry's taken with the different deals that he's worked out will better serve the NFL in the long term or if they may be the very thing that destructs the NFL certain teams are dominated by the coach Don Shula in Miami Jimmy when he was here with the Cowboys is this more of a player's team than a coach's team it it is probably more of an assistant coach and players team there is a head coach's team you know certainly when Jimmy was here was it was very much a head coach team Jimmy kind of tended to be the dominating influence on everybody and very has a different demeanor the players at least understand how he's going to react and what we can expect of him and in return what he can expect of us how do you get the drive to want to win again after you have had success and then it's been eliminated I've never heard an athlete said but I've often heard media or fans say it that if a team makes it to the Superbowl the reason that they didn't fare very well the next year or they declined was because they became complacent and lost their desire or not I really have a hard time with that because I've been in two Super Bowls and there's nothing I want more than to make it to three you know I feel that once you've been to that game then nothing else matters anymore because it is the greatest thing in the world to be able to at the end of the season to say that you're world champ Troy Aikman what strikes you the most about Troy Joe Greg when you stand on the sidelines and coach against this guy the thing that kind of jumped out at me when I'm standing on the
