[Music] this is the first generation of the ration cold weather produced by Rothko freeze-dried incorporated this specific version was only produced for one year now Rothko freeze-dried stands for right away Foods Corporation and this one here has some specific contents that are not in any other ration including the fruit soup in this case raspberry also you get beef stew bars / slices we're going to be checking that out we're first going to start with the a component which is pretty much all essentially or breakfast content another thing I like about the RCW is it lists all the contents great on the outside of the ration unlike a lot of other rations where pretty much you have to figure it out after you open it or already know that menu lists somehow okay so we're going to open this thing up and lay out all the contents because I really want to see what a whole RCW looks like laid out right off the bat we've got an accessory packet instant coffee cream substitute sugar chewing gum matches to a tissue and a closure device nuttin raisin nickel 54 gram pack check out the contents cocoa beverage powder a second nut and raisin mix okay alright there it is fruit soup raspberry now I want to check out the lock code says here 100 with a 9 the hundredth day of 1989 Wow gotta say fruit soup Haley made this for a year I don't have any bad things to say about it I'll sit and you'll see soon enough it's a very rare and it's a very exciting item to find to say the least apple cider 50 gram pack not bad all right we've got some instant oatmeal apple and cinnamon and the lock codes kind of been born there we go one hundred and twenty ninth day of nineteen eighty nine nine another hot chocolate old-school spoon and that's interesting another hot chocolate and I think it listed having chicken soup I got check again I believe it did and instead it gave us a third cocoa beverage powder so well let's let's creature it did yeah it did different contents okay so there is the a component and we're going to be adding on to that pile here we're starting with an oatmeal cookie and granola bar in one pack that's always been kind of interesting you can get a chocolate covered brownie oh here you go fig bars it's interesting those and the cocoa beverage powders are in a dark pack the rest are all in that white snow camouflage and then a beverage base orange kind of a yeah a little bit compromised probably no good no big deal when you get another one of those oatmeal cookie and granola bars so that's pretty nice they contain 4,500 calories each another spoon for the whole 24-hour ration and this thing requires no joke oh yeah check this out candy chocolate bars with toffee and rich sweet yeah like no joke seriously this thing requires 90 ounces of water total to fully rehydrate and oh cool thanks tea mix instant and refill this pack with like newspaper it'll still be good for display alright you get another tea mix and here is the neatest thing check this out Natick food labs developed this back in the early 80s maybe even as early as the late 70s these compressed freeze-dried food Barr's there is four bars in the saying and it fully rehydrates just like a normal beeps do all right that's what's in a RCW accessory packet look at that 4,500 calories we're starting off with breakfast let's get this out onto a tray nice well I want to definitely check out this instant oatmeal apple and cinnamon first got to be careful when you open these old-school RCW packs not to spill the inner contents because let's face it they kind of just packed it in there a little bit and fold it over and if you open up the wrong way everything will fly out everywhere else all right so it's a little bit of a methodical process and there's no floor to the bottom of these old pouches here this one looks like it's kind of had some yeah this definitely been some oxidation with the fruit the fruits gotten a little bit dark and yeah that's no big deal stuff broken up Oh stuffs kind of you know solidified a little bit maybe a little bit of moisture is gotten in there oh yeah and it smells pretty stale actually that's a little bit of a surprise reaction cold weathers they have a minimum shelf life of three years and eighty degrees Fahrenheit and granted this thing's 27 years old so I guess that's what do I expect but um anyway we're going to add 8 ounces of hot water to that okay just kind of twist that over yeah learn that little trick from our C guests up but anyway well that's doing its thing I want to check out this coffee and that fruit soup instantly get this rush of this raspberry sweet overtone that just smells amazing that's all the water I'm adding to that maybe three ounces you know you don't add eight ounces to that that just it takes it and makes it taste like kool-aid or something which is great with a little bit of like fruit pectin in it which is still amazing trust me I've had it like that but knowing how much of a delicacy that raspberry fruit soup is by this point how this thing took me six years to find so I've had this fruit soup as a single component recently but other than that yeah you really don't want to add too much water to this because it gives it this amazing consistency and strong flavor granted if you wanted to get your hydration which is really the scope of the purpose and design for this ration is to get rehydrated I mean it is in breakdown for its 4,500 calories eight percent protein 32 percent fat and 60% carbohydrates so really this thing is all about getting sugar and hydration I mean its shelf place very long for the sugar content I just got to keep scaring this thing look at that that's the way to go that is one of the most amazing things ever made in a ration mm-hmm yeah it's sweet lightly tangy has this unique flavor and consistency mmm it tastes like some sort of instant perhaps berry jelly seriously truly a delicacy let's stir up that coffee coffee instant type-1 you can never go wrong mmm perfect balance and acidity it really is some perfect coffee so what I'm going to do to make it even better add some hot cocoa to the mix it smells perfectly good and definitely just have a normal hot cocoa as well I rarely ever just have hot chocolate on its own and then real quick check out this nut and raisin mix you'll see if these nuts are rancid they smell fine very dry they are a little bit dark they look pretty good during this up and quick looking good all right so this opening is probably about fully hydrated still nice and hot not bad okay so let's check this out oh boy get one of those big old your oxidized pieces of Apple in there oh it smells a little bit sour mmm hold on let's just go for another bite and yeah that's actually fine nice you know that's always fun you know I should probably need this spoon is they gonna dry out this fruit soup again this is like the main attraction for me look at that that's the way to do it I mean if you add 8 ounces is pretty cool still but this is better mmm this is like the best thing ever made that's incredible now this apple flavor it's very creamy and it is a little bit stale and look at that Apple it's kind of so hmm yeah it has a light cinnamon I mean yeah it is a little bit stale you know I'm picking up more of that as I go along it is 27 year old oatmeal the creamer thankfully it's not dried milk it's creamer and that's why it's lasted this long so that that is on its side it probably has a 20 year shelf life I would say safe to say it has that much of a shelf life and this here are me mocha with coffee instant truly decadent that light acidity of the coffee and you pair that with that MRE cocoa and Marie Coco has its own kind of unique brand of flavor okay so because it's not dried milk it's partially hydrogenated soybean oil it's tons of creamer and sugar and they throw in like B vitamins and whatnot so it just gives it a certain ting yeah it is better with the coffee added extremely sweet I mean that is the thing it's very high in sugar it's gotta be like 30 grams of sugar per pack easily so let's check out these nuts get a couple dry raisins you know they don't look too bad I want to first start with just a raisin and they are perfectly good naturally so let's try out the rest and they're great they're just a little bit dry nice hmm yeah definitely go for another bite of this guys get a big ol bite this time mmm it just has a nice mild apple flavor to it it's it's pretty decent I mean the apples they rehydrate well they taste kind of natural you know it's a lightly sweet mmm a little bit of a cinnamon undertone not bad go back to that army mocha this is definitely the right way to start off that day and you saved the creamer and sugar for for lunch I'm going to use one of those granola bars oatmeal cookie bar packages and take the creamer and sugar you save that for lunch for a little trick with one of those granola bars be checking that out in just a second here move over to a nice little midday snack the end of those beef stew bars slash slices for dinner this is leg food of the gods and look at that consistency finish off that mocha now we'll check out lunch okay so lunch is pretty much a midday snack here it's no big deal actually I think it's pretty nice and we're going to first start off with um there's a oatmeal cookie and granola bars so his nose starts perfectly fine check this out so you get two different bars in one pack this is the granola bar right there and that's the oatmeal cookie bar not bad so what I want to do is what I'm thinking of well that will hopefully work actually we're going to switch these what I want to do is break up this granola bar and add a little bit of cream and sugar to it because on its own you know I mean it's pretty decent on its own but it gets pretty old and I've eaten a lot of these things and on its own actually has a little bit of a honey under tongue little coconut a little honey a little bit of apple and that's seriously would taste like but in this case I want to break it up and crumble it into essentially what is going to be a little bit of a granola you know cereal okay and from there I want to add the cream and sugar to it real quick because this is how you change things up in a ration keep it from being completely redundant and also this is actually just a really good way to prepare this if you have the means the time I mean you can eat those granola bars on the go absolutely perfect that way but with this gives you a little something different these bars were originally introduced in the food packet survival general purpose and the food packet survival bed and aircraft whatnot instead of just eating it as a bar you can you know actually do something interesting with it so you don't go crazy eating the same thing over and over and with this oatmeal cookie bar I could easily break that up and put in there too but I'm going to have this just as a bar this thing here is fantastic on its own so we're going to just leave that be not break that up or do anything it but in the meantime we're going to check out this apple cider mmm has such a strong spice kind of undertone to it it's actually is good quality there's always that slight separation but again I think it's spices yeah it's actually a really complex flavor apple cider and it's very sweet it also has strong spice on your channel we're going to definitely check it out the let's check these nut Ray's mix definitely the same as last one I like how they break it into two packs lets you split it up throughout the day gives you options now let's check out that weird dark pack big bar these are probably Fig Newtons and they're probably really dark my guess but we'll see ya slice off super dark Fig Newtons Wow look at that oh my gosh they smell fermented they literally smell lamented that's so strange hmm definitely I gotta check out the black piggies I mean it's totally oxidized and I'm going to show you a scale of what Natick through labs did when they first developed the ration cold weather prototypes as far back as 1982 I found some stock photos of some big bars and heat stressed over different periods of time three months six months twelve months this is pretty dark let's compare it to the ones on the scale [Music] nice okay so let's first try out that granola bar cereal essentially is what this is not bad mmm that's what you gotta do with it and that a little bit of sugar I added you know that six gram packet sugar it just makes this very sweet the creamer really does exactly what it should making this tastes almost like cereal mmm you gotta love that I mean innovation and rations that's key because um if you don't do that you're not going to finish everything like eating the same stuff over and over you'll go crazy okay let's try out the oatmeal cookie bar mmm Wow sweet buttery shortening oatmeal shortbread kind of flavor to it robust texture it's one of the better things that you can't find in modern rations I'm not too big on the nuts here because they're pretty dry I mean the raisins are real dry but at least they taste real good yeah the raisins are decent the rest of the nuts are pretty dry but they're not bad they're not rancid and just really dry and kind of bitter like there's a preservative bottom but anyway like probably a bunch of BHA and BHT so let's check out this apple cider I mean they call for 12 ounces of water for this so doing it with 8 naturally it's going to be stronger and sweeter honestly I feel like it's the way to go unless you're actually out in the snow in an Arctic climate where you need the hydration doesn't matter if you use 8 or 12 ounces mmm look at the spices see that that's quality so much flavor so sweet so delicious now we're going to check out that velvety smooth really weird super dark and bizarre yeah Fig Newton hmm that's kind of weird but I don't believe it it's still perfectly edible Wow it's actually kind of aged yeah wait a second that's that's always you know what and that is really neat hmm you know where you find a big Newton like this nowhere it's aged 27 years and would know what she'll finish that yeah that was the surprise of the ration so far hmm didn't expect that didn't expect to still be good that's that apple cider you can't really beat that and this that's the way to have a granola bar it's my new way of eating this that's the way to do it well there goes lunch essentially just a small meal you know stop have a nice hot drink have a nice little warmed up mini granola and some trail mix out walking around you know if you're out hiking and he got this and definitely eat this on the move mmm can't go wrong so let's check out dinner okay so this is where I picked out for dinner right off the bat this beverage base orange I mean this would have been pretty nice if it weren't all kind of turned into a walk but speaking of block here's a block of beef stew cooked dehydrated it's broken up into four separate blocks and that's going to be really neat checking out extremely rare it was something that essentially was a prototype that was only put into regular procurement once and this is it this is the only time the bars slices were used for any mains and well being said let's get this out onto a tray nice all right for starters we're gonna check it out that beef stew listen for that his didn't hear any tests hmm but it smells just fine I mean well there's barely any smell okay check this out Wow definitely one of those rare things and he'll never really find again pretty much least not for a long time all right so check out the simple ingredients I mean that's not bad says to add 12 ounces of hot water I'm really only tempted to just rehydrate approximately half of this because getting the chance to actually eat those food bars as is is just a real treat in itself okay so let's check out the instant tea next this is to put this into a third canteen study eight ounces of water again I like to make my drinks a little bit stronger unless I'm out maybe camping in case you can use what they say to use I like to make it a little bit stronger okay let's check out that chocolate covered brownie you know a lot of times the nuts go rancid in these it was made 110th day of 1989 I mean very good chance the nuts are rancid but will say like has a little bit of a smell to it a little bit of a fruity smells the only way I could put it check it out a minute candy chocolate bars were toffee and rich sweet definitely a military name a military style title you know that great strangely worded okay let's check these out yeah check out the name on this right this is the funniest name candy chocolate bar with toffee and riched sweet type seven style one to play a unique name for a chocolate bar check out the ingredients pretty extensive they have a very pleasant smell to them you know I'm gonna unwrap one of those right now I haven't had one of these in a while the last time I had one I'll say this that smell the exact same way it was still perfectly edible looked like it hadn't been even a day old just like this yeah that's right I said it been six years since I've had one maybe five but yeah check that out looking good check that out in just a sec the way that smells the cinnamon of the oatmeal cookie bar and the shortening well and it's like very sweet along with the granola bar which kind of has this apple cinnamon flavor or smell to it it just has this fantastic kind of duo going on of a smell it's really decent now this here I can guarantee to you is no good but I want to show you anyway we'll open up the package and I'll show you it's dark the b6 vitamin b6 has definitely spoiled in this okay this has this extremely strong smell to it it's no good trust me Moisture has got into it years ago that it'll make the the water just as dark as that tea and it's not supposed to be it's supposed to be like a nice healthy orange we're gonna do is check out this beef stew and you know since it's bar / slices here why not enjoy this and it's unique in strange little way here and we are going to check one of these that look look at that food bar I mean that is that is astounding to me that is one of the most incredible things in food engineering and just to think this was pressed out 27 years ago it smells decent too it just smells like beef stew and like beef fat mmm oh wow it's very crumbly it's like a a sponge it just sucks every bit of moisture out of your mouth when you bite into it but oh my gosh it's like really good it's almost like beef jerky and it's like blending out getting bigger and bigger tastes like beef stew this has to be one of the most interesting food experiences of my life right now I mean with those peas in there I mean you can taste every bit of everything but it's all freeze-dried and then rehydrates as you're biting into it it's the strangest experience mmm yeah that tea a nice light lemon oil essence sweet let's check out some more of this beef it's just so unusual I am I gotta say if you ever want to try one of these things I guess that's the only way you'll ever get a chance to try is just open up a beast dude Mountain House meal or something and just start eating it dry but imagine it compact it is like this I mean look at that you know what I'm going to do I'm just going to rehydrate one for now and then I think it only needs about like three or four ounces of water to fully rehydrate this little guy so let's do that let's just start small that looks good we'll kind of work that in oh wow look at that easy enough that is the strangest little thing I swear it's pretty cool you know all that's rehydrating I want to check out this chocolate covered brownie and the nuts mmm I don't know they're a little bit dark but smells weird just take one bite kind of let it hold this is how you eat it chocolate-covered brownie okay from the old MRE you just take that one bite a little bit more than nibble your tongue won't register but if the nuts are rancid which they won't kill you I mean you could eat the whole thing I mean rancid or not but it's just going to swell up your tongue it'll taste bitter and disgusting and um well yeah that's gonna creep up on me I can stop yeah I can feel that under my tongue yep yep that's rancid oh oh gosh it's always that same weird follow up like it just wafts out of nowhere there's this really weird plastic like it's very funky I can't explain it it's very strange a kind of foul that anyway let's check this out and I have some very soft textured chocolate with weird little toffee bits there's just a very smooth very artificial milk chocolate I mean for it to not bloom whatsoever in all those years that's unusual you know I have a feeling this could stay in this condition for another 50 years this is the kind of thing that would the toffee bits maybe maybe wouldn't hold too bad about the Browning but at least the chocolate style 7 type what is that again type 7 style 1 chocolate at least that held up ok so this here feels like well feels just right let's check it out quite fascinating how they can just press out those cube bars and form them like that pretty interesting and she Nuri involved with it very dangerous to use anyway check that out nice mmm mmm that's delicious it's perfect beef stew I could have added a teeny bit more water but really mmm this will be quick and easy to eat it's not messy that's awesome you know it's just very savory good quality beef as fascinating because like that right there hmm just tastes like a nice little home-cooked kind of meal hmm look at that so one food bar is pretty satisfying if you were on the move you had to eat this quickly you have the option with this plus it's just something different I mean again check this thing out isn't that crazy food science at its best right here you ask me this is really the pinnacle of it why they only had it for one year mmm quite the novelty I don't know how practical it is all right so pretty much gonna just wrap this up here pretty much just have what is a bunch of little dessert bars essentially and that's no big deal you know this granola bar again great as a cereal excellent on son perfect on-the-go hmm when you're on a hike when you're on the move you need some good naan thirst provoking high-calorie foods you know the ration cold weather this entire thing this entire 24-hour ration the tooth pouches has a total of 5 grams of sodium for the whole thing and with coupled with its low protein content it's perfect for not dehydrating a soldier in cold weather climates still provides ample calories that's he is perfect gotta say this first-generation Ratko freeze-dried RCW definitely the best I mean these food bars this is just the weirdest coolest thing ever I mean I'm gonna savor these the other two are going in a ziplock baggie I'm eating them for lunch tomorrow I got a thank K man for hooking me up with this ration thanks so much dude this was amazing rash and cold weather produced in 1989 by rapke freeze-dried highly
