[Music] ESPN celebrating its 10th season as the world's leader in motor sports coverage presents speed world tonight live from Bristol International Raceway in Tennessee the push 500 always an enthusiastic crowd here at Bristol and despite the fact that it poured down rain about an hour ago they're filing in single-seat available for tonight's Winston Cup event good evening everybody I'm Bob Jenkins and welcome to Bristol International Raceway it's always been a tremendous racetrack just a little over 1/2 mile in length but a lot of banking on the turns and it was completely repaved last April before the spring race has been completely repaved again it's a lot different track Benny Parsons and we were on last week at Michigan Bob Jake is last we were Michigan we talked about they could run three abreast on the corners four abreast down the straightaway but now we come to Bristol he just saw him folks side-by-side rubbing sheetmetal trying to get by and look last night three laps to go Mark Martin and baby Allison in a Busch Grand National race get together we're gonna see lots more of that tonight believe me with more on the race track let's go to turn number one where Jack arute is stationed Jack well Bob in addition to the fact that there's a half mile race track it also has some of the highest banking that we see anywhere on the NASCAR circuit in fact it is the highest banked racetrack that we run on Talladega many would think would be the highest they only have 31 degrees of banking but right here it's 33 degrees of banking now they tour this racetrack and about 16 and a half seconds so what happens there is that when it happens it happens very quickly and there's been a problem as well throughout the course of practice and qualifying the track has come apart a bit but with the rain many of the drivers think that maybe that might let the second groove so to speak come in today because it's washed off a lot of the rubber and cooled the racetrack down considerably but we'll only know at about 20 or 30 laps into the race where that second groove begins to come into play now there's another battle of sorts going on right now throughout the course of the Winston Cup tour and that's a battle for points and for more on that here's Ned Jarrett and Jack that battle is getting tighter and tighter every week Dale Earnhardt still leaves and I would say that he would have an advantage here tonight that lead because he has run so well on this racetrack has several wins here Rusty Wallace who is in second place he moved from 4th to 2nd last week with his win at Michigan also runs very well here he has to win so look for him to be chasing Earnhardt and may be moving or gaining a little bit on the points system now Mark Martin hasn't won so far this year but he's hung in there in third place in the Western Cup point standings he likes this racetrack look for him to run very well here tonight Darrell Waltrip has dropped out or at least a couple hundred points back here in the last couple of weeks he had big trouble at Michigan last week and that's one advantage here tonight he fell out early at Michigan well they only have 32 cars starting this race tonight where they had 42 last week so if you fall out early it won't hurt you quite as much Waltrip locks this racetrack to Davey Allison has moved into the top five as a result of a good finish last week and he certainly has the chance to at this championship he hasn't had too much success here at Bristol but look for him to run good tonight Bill Elliott said last week that he felt he was out of the chase 286 points behind but I don't think that's the case at all I think he still has a shot at winning the championship this year now they're chasing a million dollars that Winston will pay at the end of the year well there's another fellow that has the chance to win some big money here tonight and he's standing by with dr. Jerry punch well thank you Dad you know Alan quick he picked up his third Busch pole of the year in 10th of his career but more importantly it picks up a great opportunity tonight the opportunity to win 136 thousand eight hundred dollars of unical challenge money on top of what the boys 500 would pay at Allen a great opportunity for your first congratulations on a great pole run well thank you you know it certainly is an opportunity we certainly thank unical for their participation and you know what's come to be a very exciting thing you know this race here would be the richest short track race ever if we could win it a great opportunity for Alan Kulwicki they're getting ready to go green very shortly here we'll go back upstairs to Bob Jenkins at Unocal money worth one hundred thirty six thousand eight hundred dollars if Alan Kulwicki can win tonight he could very well win more than darrell waltrip won earlier this year when he took the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 our speed world coverage of the bush 500 is being brought to you by mr. Goodrich mr. Goodwrench knows it's not just a car it's your freedom by pronto featuring quality auto parts at lower prices by the heartbeat of America today's Chevrolet and by the die-hard battery now with more power when you need it most the effort to dry the track is continuing but we should be able to get this race started in just a few moments return with us in just a few moments to the bush 500 [Music] NASCAR Winston Cup racing tonight from Bristol Tennessee and the bush 500 well let's take a look at this racetrack that they'll be competing on here tonight it's point five three three miles in length of pole lap time was sixteen point three nine four seconds and the speed one hundred seventeen point zero four three miles an hour banking thirty six degrees will go five hundred laps and as we indicated the track has been completely repaved this summer now let's take a look at the starting lineup for tonight's race on the pole in car number seven is zero X and ev'ry sport from Greenfield Wisconsin is Alan Kulwicki outside row number one from shabang New York and the number five Levi Garrett Chevrolet is Geoff Bodine starting in third position will be his brother Brett Bodine in the motor craft for car number 15 outside of row number 2 will be Ken Schrader from Fenton Missouri in the number 25 Folgers coffee Chevrolet in row number three will be Sterling Marlin driving the car number 94 Sunoco ultra Altice from Columbia Tennessee and beginning from sixth position will be Ricky Rudd from Chesapeake Virginia in the Quaker State Buick car number 26 going from row number 4 will be Dale Earnhardt from Kannapolis North Carolina the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet car number 3 the current Winston Cup points leader and outside of row number 4 will be Ernie Irvan in the number 2 Kroger Pontiac from Modesto California he ran so well here in this spring race in row number five will be Darrell Waltrip in car number 17 and Rusty Wallace in 27 the sixth row has Michael Waltrip in car number thirty and Jimmy Spencer in 88 the seventh row Rick mast in number 66 and Harry ganden 33 row number eight is composed of dairy Cote and Terry Labonte cars ten and eleven the ninth row bill Parsons in 55 and Rick Wilson in number four and take a look now at the rest of the starting lineup 32 cars will start this event the qualifying speed turned in by Alan Kulwicki 117 point zero for three miles an hour was a new qualifying record for this event now in addition to those who made the field here are the ones that missed the starting lineup Richard Petty was not fast enough Jim Sauter also missed as did Jimmy means and Tommy Ellis Tommy Ellis was driving a Rick Henry car and they were supposed to do some filming for a movie that perhaps Tom Cruise will star in but they have moved those cameras to the number 10 car driven by Jerry cope so those are the four drivers who did not make the field for tonight's Busch 500 and mr. bad the Richard Petty missed the race here tonight he had a little bit of a problem last night they normally run faster at night when they qualified for the first round of qualifying last night and then this afternoon got his character running faster but when he started calm in the car the left dawn flat so he hooked it back up as much as they could but it had to be on his mind as he was out there qualifying and unfortunately didn't go quite fast enough let's go down to the pit area and Jerry punches with Mark Martin well Damon went out with a customer see Mark Martin starting on the front row or in the front four or five spots but tonight at a track where he owns two qualifying record over 120 miles an hour which he set back in the spring he is starting back in 23rd spot mark lot of your fans mcglue know what happened why you starting way back here well we just had a real bad qualifying effort the cars really running super today and I'll be real honest Jerry I think this could be the one I feel as good about this race as I have any race all year long after last night in the bush grand national event you and Davey Allison had some time to discuss what happened last night today you've both set and talked for a long time many of the fans who watched last night on ESPN saw the bumping incident with a couple left to go you went on to win Davey went on into the wall what would a discussion like today between you and David well you know I'd really rather not get into it other than you know I just didn't feel like it was my fault and baby was pretty upset about it last night and you know I think today we've looked at it and he didn't know that I was beside him and moved up and I didn't have any choice but either go into the grandstands or hit the brakes and it was three laps to go and I couldn't back off in well there has been a review of the tape last night from ESPN by the NASCAR officials up in the tower and they have determined that that nothing else happened except just racing it was good solid racing last night very shortly we'll be getting ready to the green to the police 500 so stay tuned [Music] back at bristol International Raceway there you can see the chances that Alan Kulwicki has in winning the race tonight in 57 and 13 have been won from the pole position but boy Alan would sure like to add his name to those who have accomplished that feat because it sure would put a lot of money in his pocket many you know folks that unit count money they're talking about Union oil put seventy six hundred dollars every race for the driver that can win the full position and go on to win the race now then if the driver doesn't win the race it carries over to the next race we haven't had a winner since Rockingham back in the spring when Rusty Wallace picked up $15,200 now palca wicked knight should not win the race next week folks at Darlington South Carolina the to pick up a bonus of a hundred and forty four thousand hundred dollars so lots of money for the boat winner if he can roll and win the red bowtie driving the number 15 motor craft Ford had an excellent qualifying effort yesterday and will start from third position he barely had a shot at the pole but it came very close to it I think this is Brett's uh best guard at Westmont Cup competition in this afternoon at the last practice session he was the fastest car that we clocked on the racetrack and he is his chances of winning his first ever Winston Cup race this evening and from 1515 starting position to begin he has some cameras in his car and the hopefully be used for racing movie that may be produced sometime this with and during Kobe just seems to be getting better and better for him and that Purolator bodyguards last week we saw em is he had a super run going and this we came back qualified 15 so might be good things for dairy coke tonight little tiny camper is located at the front and the rear of that car there's Mark Martin we just talked to him a few minutes ago and boy he has some high hopes of pulling off another victory here tonight as he did last night starting in 23rd position he has his work cut out for it there's no doubt about that but his car was working well this afternoon in practice and he just might be able to do we are delaying the start of this race because of a rain shower that moved across a Speedway about an hour and 15 maybe an hour and 30 minutes ago and I'm telling you friends it really poured down and we had even thoughts of this race not getting in but it appears it will at least get it started there is Rusty Wallace who has moved a second in Winston Cup points and is also looking for good things here tonight starting in the 10th position on the outside I'm sure most of those that are on the outside would rather be starting on the inside because it has been a one groove race track tonight but Rusty's car is working well and he certainly would like to get up there born in Shepard starts the number 75 Valvoline car he starts 29th but at least he starts inside and like Ned Jarrett said believe me folks from that green flag drops and it's going to be nine laps from now before they throw the green flag they're going to take nine more left to drive the racetrack out but they're all gonna be fighting for the inside of the racetrack let's tell you Jack arute who can talk about the trying of the racetrack well as the cars can try the racetrack the exhaust headers come down on the track and we'll try a quick one place that will not dry as quickly as right here on pit road you can see there are some dry spots here but right correctly about two feet further up there's some wet spots you can't do much to dry this area up and it'll be very very slick and you'll have to have your wits about you especially on this first series of pit stops all right thank you Jack now we have three in-car cameras that will be whopper rating for us tonight in Kyle Petty's car the number 42 machine and boy we saw some excellent footage from the in-car cameras last night Rick mast carried it for us Harry Ken will also have one this evening in the number 33 car and our third in-car camera for this evening will be carried by Sterling Marlin and car number 94 and there's another driver Sterling Marlin the Sunoco Oldsmobile a great superb qualifying run for him and the car he has run into very very good what is this well that's another camera that we have mounted on the side of his car and right now it's shooting it out back that also should give us some very fine pictures as the race progresses this evening again we are running under caution here for ten laps making sure the track is completely dry before we go green in the Busch 500 [Music] the Chevy in Vivi age that powered last year's Indy 500 winner is now more responsible more efficient more powerful one reason is it's now we quickly this on-board engine computer which is important not because it's on Chevy powered race cars like this but because it was developed on Chevrolet's like this first [Music] back at Bristol Intl Raceway for the bush 500 Winston Cup race which is now under yellow because of a wet racetrack but is drying very rapidly and we should get the green here in just a few moments now next Sunday the September 3rd the Winston million 1 million dollars on the line for Darrell Waltrip if he can win that event it's the Hines southern 500 live at 12:15 next Sunday afternoon September 3rd it's part of race day America here on ESPN our live coverage in addition to the southern 500 next Sunday comes from the Indy car race at Lexington Ohio the NHRA race at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the Imps a competition from San Antonio Texas that's next Sunday here on ESPN Alan Kulwicki you can see the effort that's being made to dry his pit area because the pits are quite slick although the racetrack is drying rapidly that's trying to bail water out of a mobility spoon you know that one thing I wanted to at one point I wanted to make concerning this unit cow challenge buddy we mentioned that in 19 races so far this year only one driver Rusty Wallace has won from the pole position and you would ask yourself well is that usual yeah it is at this time last year in 1988 in the first 19 races only one individual had won from the pole position that was Terry Labonte at North Wilkesboro he shoot account people probably did a lot of research and finding out exactly how many times that happens over the course of mediator yeah they knew what was going on I think NASCAR's look for a rabbit to go out and sort of check the track and Baelor know it's going to be it but now the cars are coming back down pit road or at least abortion Albemarle laughs try to drive pit road that's the reason they're coming down pit road they've been out on the racetrack you stayed out on the racetrack but everybody else coming down pit road let's go to Jerry punch on pit road a lot of conversation between the drivers and crews as the field passes behind me along Jim herd they find a drive-in Road about an hour ago while it was still pouring down rain here many the drivers were in the drivers lounge it's about 30 feet away from where I'm standing and having a little bit of a skull session Darrell Waltrip was sort of holding court and what they were discussing was this the fact that with the rain washing all the rubber off a brand-new asphalt a little pebbles of track that are coming up we're going to be cutting the tires pretty severely as they cut the tires they're going to be a lot of concern about drivers changing tires keeping fresh rubber on the cars so early on when they make pit stops they may change all four tires and when the race goes to green gentlemen upstairs there's going to be some kind of scramble for that bottom groove on the race track because that's the only place there may be any rubber at all left so watch it when they drop the green flag it's going to be unbelievable tell them Jerry but meditation when they have those skull sessions in the drivers lounges Darrell Walker usually holds cord around Winston Cup racing for a long time Benny Parsons and we want to say hello to all selling didn't a long time car owner former driver has been in the hospital all week very critically healed but we're happy to report that he's coming along okay and want to say hello to house down in New Hanover Hospital and Wilmington North Carolina Betty we look forward to having you back at the racetrack forty line our best applause Ellington in his recuperation well we're back on the short tracks in Winston Cup competition now for while at Bristol earlier this year Rusty Wallace was the winner at North Wilkesboro in the spring short track season the win went to Dale Earnhardt Darrell Waltrip won at Martinsville earlier this year and Rusty Wallace was the winner at Richmond so you can see that rusty won two out of the four short track races earlier this year this one first time that I've ever seen him fellas come down pit road during these lamps to drive pit road that is me too but I think it's a good idea it's a super idea and I don't know why we haven't thought this before but does the racetrack is basically dry the tremendous bang sure crystals of 35 degree banks all the water runs down and it's not a great Shore to try those out but pit road being as flat as it is it's very hard to drive and I tell you what is exciting when these cars make a pit stop number one they keep stopped and number two once it get true with the pit stop they can't get started again because these tires are fall they have slicks they have exactly no tread on just public department record we have not started counting the laps yet we will run ten under the caution when the green comes out or the green and yellow comes out it hasn't yet the effort to drive the track and the pit area are continuing [Music] the filter designed to exceed all limits also excels within limits purolator filters [Music] dangerous turns add up to one of the most treacherous stops on the circuit sparks will fly up a grande tree of Belgium Sunday at noon eastern on ESPN [Music] back at Bristol where it is not raining at the moment but the track is not completely dry now Dale Earnhardt has been sent out as a rabbit and he's trying to determine exactly how safe the track is and you know he went around there at a pretty good clip and here's the fellow leading the Winston Cup point standings and if he goes into that turn and it still slick and gets that car into the wall that is taking a big chance it's for sure it's taken tremendous chance because he can now go to a backup car 24 hours ago a very exciting Busch Grand National race here at Bristol International Raceway the Jay Johnson 200 with three laps to go a controversial ending involving Davey Allison and Mark Martin we talked to both drivers I tried to race clean with everybody you know this is a short track and I know there's gonna be some bumping a rubbing that goes on but when you just turn a guy from the wrong side into the wall head on that's uncalled for you know if he'd have been up to my door I too gave him room but he wasn't where I could see him the guy in the front has the ride away from everything I've been told as long as I've been racing well you know the car ran good the Carolina Ford dealers car was was super all night it's unfortunate it had to end that way rakes the next incident on a race track I I was beside Davey and they tried to crowd me up crowd me out and I didn't lift I I didn't think that he'd try to pinch me into the wall like that here we see they're coming out fourth corner de biast on the inside Mark Martin on the outside they're going down to frustrate away and davey allison comes up just a little bit mark mark touches the right rear corner but that turns it head on in the wall this is pictures from inside the rick mast automobile now here's another shot down the front straightaway see Mark Martin was not a longshot Davey Allison but yet if he if Mark were to back off Rick masters gonna beat him also maybe I'll be outta here so it's one of those racing accidents that's going to happen every each and every race here at a racetrack where there's just not much room to be racing up and especially as fast as they run here again that's another thing those cars are running probably on 35 40 mile it's a very difficult call and I would say then it was a race in Ashland I agree Mark Martin won the race LD on Trivedi second Rick mast third Dale Jarrett fourth Dale Earnhardt fifth and Davey Allison ended up in 14th finishing position in that Busch Grand National race last night that's when Bob Mark Martin was the first ever for v6 Ford at Busch grand national competition we're about ready to go racing I believe are we are there start counting the laps I guess hear that they gave him a one lamp signal here Paul but ago they will start counting the laps I guess this time around they will go green this time around the lights on top of the pace car are out we're friends because we've got some exciting Winston Cup racing for you coming up here on ESPN live at Bristol Tennessee the green flag is out man here we go I got yourself a good Brett Bodine and Sterling Marlin everybody threw the first lap few cars on the high side of the back of the pack but our partners [Music] he tried to accelerate we talked about at the Greg sacks on the outside in the orange and yellow number 48 car and Kyle Petty and number 42 below and mom Morgan Shepherd there in car 75 the place to be so he got down on the inside and great Sachs is trying desperately to get down there [Music] touch slightly as we're inside Petty's car [Music] in action we were seeing was right behind [Music] with things just a little bit I think porygon Shepherd oak Shepherd has been pretty fast even though he qualified [Music] around just a bit these guys are thing involved [Music] these guys have got to be thinking about is the possibility [Music] and skies are once again cloudy to the west of us so you got to think about the possibility laughs Ray's here this evening Jeff Garrett Chevrolet number five the third place car there is Ken Schrader's leading a group of cars down the straightaway Schrader then Ricky Jimmy Spencer trying to get inside straighter thirteen and so position here which I believe is Ernie's best qualifying as in third by Sterling Marlin you're watching third first and second quote now we're inside sterling Marlins the motor craft for in practice here this afternoon it was in Haiti [Music] backwards from the store [Music] making a pit stop and still Bodine is able to hang on Reiter is having problems it piracies lost several positions in the last few laps the number 25 car now is just ahead of and got the inside position on into the whole string went by this abuse I'm arrogant skull Food City Chevrolet number 66 like the hairy hands car is smoking was tire smoking [Music] mrs. wonder we have [Music] his windshield is fogged up he can't see having started this race things that can slow your progress down that's one we haven't heard of recently here is a good three-car battle Brett I sighed and there to the outside now looking back at Ernie Irvan and Ricky rod is there side by side momentarily down the stretch they get into single file form trying to work the inside of Jimmy Spencer fast they go down that's random a result [Music] instead was breaking up in part besides all of that and here just a couple of hours ago spitting done a half spent at least to the inside of the racetrack has it straightened out go into the pits on the backstretch and therefore take you to see Alan Kulwicki pursuit not Jeff you're the pits on the back stretcher that's still out there on the racetrack that's the way he was hitting and every Spanish what it gives he tries to get down with the insider Jimmy Spencer they touch that Michael goes all the way around and he was headed down pit road on the backstretch win he got it straight down so he went down he is now one lap down boy Jimmy Spencer also lost a job saving that go and that is Rusty Wallace there on the outside hoping that he did not become involved and he did not meanwhile still up front but see how things shake out going into turn 22 side by side Jeff bodean front continues 26 laps have been completed here in this 500 laparoscope you got a good jump on the start the place to be as we mentioned several times it's going to be very difficult to pass here tonight although we have seen some passing but we're gonna see some laughing - laughs as now the number three car of Dale art has inside that bar wouldn't turn three inches long various animated practice but Bernard [Music] watching the slower traffic and beginning the lapping process the number 57 Karim putts trick will be the first to be passed and he apparently is smoking just a little bits of smoke seen from that race car buzzing spells in the garden you can make up a whole I'll strike one here comes out like a wiki his car and alack Oh now those fought to hit pulled away for a little while Dale Earnhardt and Hut Stricklin on the left through the vantage point of Sterling Marlin Pass at Strickland he does Oh the right side of the car and you can see how like a walker Jeff bodean just a moment ago but he is really oh my goodness gracious about a dozen cars every pair of running kyle petty that comes Phil Parsons Larry Pearson is in this the 83 car Joe as Greg sacks of Bisbee [Music] [Music] the leaders still trying to work slower traffic these cars you know they've been a little bit and a furry tractor run in there for could be at least just a little bit evident Oh they allure cart he's the defending champion of this race they're just no room it's so close right here the wiki and go into the corner side-by-side they come out with a slight advantage the inside [Music] Sakon Alan Kulwicki drops back to third sternly part with his spinning and turn umber for he's on the bottom of the racetrack and whether car is going to be involved and Sterling Marlin like had two spins but no cautions and the lead goes to Dale has the lead as he was able to pass Jeff bodean five [Music] to pick that start working card to look like large mouth water yep it sure does it is too bad that Michael that half span of you rather than [Music] take a look at the spin by Sterling Marlin had occurred in turn number four looks like he just tried to get the inside Alan Kulwicki and Kulwicki came down sternly trying to turn away from him and have spun instra almost exactly the same thing that happened to Michael Waltrip earlier on except at the opposite end of the racetrack now back inside Sterling's car as he tries to make up hard running in second position as Jeff bodean at the Porsche 500 well your short track fans thrill coming up as three of the next five races at Winston Cup competition we can turning : Michael Waltrip is into the wall and Joe Ruttman hits him as Michael slid down the banking Joe Ruttman just had no place to go and here's the race to the line well he had just left Mark Martin and he wanted to keep him a lap down Terry of the body and Davey Allison the two cards in front of Earnhardt were all opposed to lap down he wanted to catch them and pass them but here we see powerful Walter he's moving around inside the carpet a lot of damage done to the country time lemonade Pontiac we'll take a look at it once again now Michael is already sliding to the wall here I can't see any reason before they may about a flat tire something going in the corner and here comes Joe Ruttman if I tell you that pours out barbecue sauce mogul did not need to hit Michael Walter because they've had a terrible oh he's trying to get underneath Morgan Shepherd in the battle in Pontiac exactly what happened is the moment ago with Jimmy Spencer for almost the same thing so our first caution period of the evening and day learn aren't the lead of the races in the pits as they change tires on the right side let's go to Jack arute service in the Levi Garrett team led by 1l Wilson they have made a change in the handling let's check in with Jerry punch with Alan Kulwicki well a quick you had the backup Jack arute to get out of blocked it but historically Marvin Carly James right side tires and and they have now left the pit let's go back to Jack Jack arute well they work on Jeff what is Carney will be the first out out of the pit row ESCA Wicky beat him out along with a lot of letters coming in for four tires fresh rubber all the way around all right so the first set of pit stops completed here at Bristol at the 61 lat mark we are under caution because of a crash over in turn number two involving Michael Waltrip and Joe Ruttman and the cleanup continues in that area of the racetrack we'll be back with four live coverage right after this [Music] Michael Waltrip's car is on the back of a tow truck being taken down the backstretch pits now let's take a look at the top ten as we have them at the moment it's Dale Earnhardt leading with Alan Kulwicki second Geoff Bodine third Ricky Rudd fourth darrell waltrip running in fifth position and six through ten jimmy spencer brett bodine Rusty Wallace Ken Schrader and Terry Labonte once again we'll show you the crash that has caused our first caution of the evening there we see our narco buyer leader Michael Walt of the yellow car country time spots was trying to get underneath Morgan Shepherd to put to pass him tried to turn away from him when Morgan came down the racetrack is fun and Jo run when the red white car comes along and runs into the side of Michael Waltrip here's a car they shot from inside of Kyle Petty's car down the right front we see Michael on the inside the yellow car and around he goes back in just breaks loose as he goes into turn one and into the wall he goes then comes back down into Joe Ruttman scalp ad goes on five we're about to go back to green we'll go green on lap number 64 that's Kyle Petty in car number 42 that leads green flag is out once again [Music] the back class and scrambling going on back next time is a lap down look at the scramble for positions here in that group date markeson 71 Bob a villain barking Shepard 26 and down need you to read the line if they want me to run tell all the cars and that back Dick Trickle also there at 84 and Jimmy Spencer at 88 will run side by side pretty good around here so that second group is working better tonight and it hit last Jack arute said at the top of the show that that second group I'd come in after about 50 or 60 laps and sure enough it the basses that break faster group it to go in and so let's go to Jack a road who has caught up with Michael Waltrip well first of all Michael are you all right yeah I'm fine at least I could say the same for the country top post cereals Pontiac it's tore up pretty bad now what happened what happened up there well Jackie is I guess in the case of a young kid with a fast car and I just tried too hard made a mistake and a pay for it I hate it happen for the guys that work on the car they did a super job getting that car ready and we could erase them tonight that makes me sad what about the adrenaline rush it was very frustrating when you spun with Spencer and maybe stand to reason that you would get all pumped up I just overdid it thought it was good I got it underneath Morgan just like I did Spencer only this time I wasn't as fortunate as I was the first time well Jerry punches with the wounded country you better send Michael Waltrip on back down here they're ready for it tip the hustle and dancing club we're gonna try to squeeze a little more lemonade out of this Pontiac being chipped away they were going to put this guy back to the race he's currently 19 to the point standings and they will just not say no they will not give up but if I were car my driver to say exactly what Michael Waltrip did it speaks well for Michael Walker to say that yet was yeah I agree with you I've never say about that you purana state will get you a long way and that's great [Music] well he is plant Alka wiki he is and is trying desperately to get in slap there are 16 cars on the lead lap and Mark Martin is running in 17th our question that they rest of the scuffle well I hope it everything right we really goofed up the Mishkan got everybody's patience my man good worker well he got their attention - he's got mine right now just past him and got back in the lead lap now still in the lead two points ahead of Rusty Wallace who is second in the Winston Cup battle bomba Dale Earnhardt is just running away from everybody else with possible exception of Mark Martin as he is put about a half a straightaway advantage on second place Alan Kulwicki 9 or 10 car lengths we'll be back with more northeastern Tennessee Bristol International Raceway after this [Music] our annual coverage of the only night race on the Winston Cup schedule the bush 500 at Bristol International Raceway tomorrow at noon Eastern Time a much different form of auto racing but nevertheless some excitement as it always is at Spa trucker shop in Belgium the Belgian Grand Prix noon tomorrow Eastern Time here on ESPN now we're watching a lot of battles on the racetrack here is Morgan Shepherd in 75 the number 27 car is Rusty Wallace 42 is Kyle Petty as they slug it out for position right behind them it's bread behind who we expected to run very strong here tonight but so far he hasn't shown what we thought he would New York and Shepherd moving around great Pontiacs running together you know then I started to say several times my class trustee last week he was a dominant part Michigan and I started to say several times running like he normally does watching this think about it and spelling ballin spins again takes Brett bow tied around with him over in turn two that's the second time that Sterling Marlin has spun this evening and this time Brett Bodine is also involved the six scholarship Mark Martin flag is out and Mark Martin trying to race Dale Earnhardt back to the start/finish line and he's going to beat him back there so he will stay in the lead lap Earnhardt was about to put him a lap down before this happened so a real break for mark Martinez Brett Bodine Motorcraft forward is sideways at the entrance to the backstretch we'll replay what happened there we see the blue car falling down on the inside that's bread put out on the outside and they come together and both of us spinning around ken schrader in the red car going by on the outside so does Terry Labonte and here goes Phil Parsons car number 55 Ernie Irvan Davey Allison Dale Jarrett and Neil body you know it looked to me like that Sterling Marlin went down in turn one okay there's the fella that's wavin the green flag means that pit road is open let's see if all the guys go oh they're all still on the racetrack what's the I've never seen this before well evidently they checked it out their tires it hasn't been that long since they were in Earnhardt certainly happy with the set of tires he has on his race car and so he decided to stand there keep the track position I guess and when he stayed out there about everybody else had to you know when I started saying just a moment ago they looked like that Sterling Marlin may have looked as we see Mark Martin and Sterling Marlin both coming to this might have looked the apron with the left front tire and got his car going sideways and when he tried to correct it he went up the racetrack and Brett go down as receipt mark mark changing the right side on that spills life board making a chassis adjustment as well the man that's standing up is making a chassis adjustment on that car and then he's turning to the left that means that he is putting some way he's taking weight off the rock they're putting it on the left here so the car must have been a little bit loose with a little bit too loose leave Victor suggests they were making their agent or tires and you say why did not know any of the other car stuff I'll get it out why didn't the rest stop him stop it changed our mark Barton did everything to lose because he's sarire the field absolutely and here is a encar an ankle from sterling Marlins car at brett bodine going sideways they stayed here [Music] well we're about to go back to green after this may leave we expected lots fans here tonight well in the race here in the spring a record number of cautions flew during a Winston Cup event 20 that set an all-time record we'll let you see the field as it goes down the backstretch to restart this race on lap number nine breath Medina and Sterling Marlin are both still in the race so it didn't knock them out they both have made pit stops pace car off green flag is unfurled that we're back to racing stealth Dale Earnhardt leads with Alan Kulwicki second by ricky rudd and jimmy spencer is running in fifth but I did lose two claps as they make repairs on his motor craft board that he is back dead running and we have a spin involving Sterling Marlin once again this time during that little melee well no yell again mr. Marley kind of problem getting his started going down does he's down home for the racing surface so apparently they feel that there might be some very it looks like it's done raise back to the line nobody's gonna get a lap back Ernie Irvan tried to fail boy here try Whitney well we'll replay it again watch sterling Marlins troubles here on the front stretch he just loses control apparently something coming out from under his own car to break traction the camera stays with it as he drives away I think we'll see where the camera didn't stay with it but there is a like oil or water or something when Sterling Marlin drove away I think I saw some fluid coming out of the 57 carb Hut Stricklin I don't know what it was but I think there was some fluid coming out of that car anyway the track officials and the track maintenance crew are in the area of the racetrack and turned one putting down some oil drive okay here is the field as it comes by of course that's Dale Earnhardt leading the group Alan Kulwicki then Ernie Irvan Geoff Bodine Dave Marcus Bobby Hillin Ricky Rudd Jimmy Spencer Darrell Waltrip Rusty Wallace Rick mast Ken Schrader Dale Jerry Neil Bonnie Larry Pierce Dick Trickle Morgan Shepherd the yellow car here in campus back there he's still in the lead lap there's Kyle panting car number 42 the 57 car at Strickland and the number 10 car derrike cope knew that just made a pit stop when we missed daily Alison's between Morgan Shepherd and Rick Wilson we also miss Phil Parsons between Rick Wilson and Harry ham and Terry Labonte and Mark martyr and the pits along with brett bodine and Sterling Marlin is back out on the racetrack so I guess it wasn't him but you see that they put some oil drive here I was looking I guess it just went said Winston said he drove away that's fine now we're inside sterling Marlins car once again for the restart just a few minutes ago see if we can determine what happens let's Harriette damn it was cold car number 33 right in front of Sterling Marlin shuffling going on up in front of it Missy Phil Parsons car up there as he gets in line Oh somebody hit the basher did somebody's love kid I'm Jeremiah so that explains Sterling's loss of control on that particular incident that's not Strickland going by there to the inside there you can plainly see the contact Sterling Marlin had on the inside I think the questions ft right ok we're back to green and the race risotto what zip to the way through that waiting you right there are 13 cars on the lead lap at earlier [Music] and Jeff bodean meanwhile mark ryoga's Carson smoke bomb miss Watson would go down into turn one well net Jarrett is absolutely right there is a lot of smoke here's what's developed he made noise and bobbing sterling wild over in turn number two what is going on at Brandt Bodine also involved once again so the same two cars that caused the most recent caution caused another one and Bob that'll be a break for Mark Martin because they have developed a serious oil leak they think one of the hoses one of the fittings has been cracked and they intend to change it during this pit stop so this caution flag will be beneficial for Mark Martin he has his cars here puts to International Raceway in the bush 500 he has a law go from the back to the front if he hopes to win this race tonight we'll be back with more from Bristol Trackbacks are brought to you by quaker state motor oil the BQ stands for quality always has always will today in NASCAR racing there's a constant communication between the crew chief and the driver here's how it's accomplished the crew chief boy is a radio on his side when he wants to talk to the driver he pushes on a button on his headset the signal goes out from this antenna to an antenna mounted on the roof of the race car comes down through a radio inside the driver's compartment to these ear plugs that are actually placed inside the drivers ear so there's no background noise now when the driver wants to talk to the crew he pushes the button on the steering wheel the signal comes up from the same radio out the same antenna on the roof crew chief receives it on his radio and hears it through these headphones that's a whole lot better than it used to be when and we used to weigh the drivers into the pits or use the old pit signs that we used to see the top 15 at the end of 107 laps here in the bush 500 we'll be back with more of our live coverage right after this [Music] sing here at Bristol and Dale earnheardt continues his domination of this race now that green car there to the inside that's Ricky Rudd and he apparently in pitstop applause - laughs yes he did it was unfortunate Ricky was running up there at the top five their second place explain [Music] right there the Goodyear Tire engineers have determined that's what's befallen ricky rudd he came in changed his tire dropped [Music] what's the problem with the car what's wrong it looks like one of those nights you know try to be nice to Ireland and got a putter him and he cut out you'll spawn the car out brandy cut out cut us both out in the the last time I post about inside and he just took me out to I don't wanna deal is [Music] well he's provided some action for us in the first one-fifth of this race now we're picking up on some battles going on Harry Gant Davey Allison the 84 are inside Harry's car now looking out the back glass to Davey Allison and Davey is intent car of Jimmy Spencer having a great run that's bloody beggars car he's 2/4 and that's been the progress so far this evening started 12 moved to 6 laughs and now he's Jimmy Smith loosen because we watch he thinks he's going to be last spring it was under the controls of Jimmy Spencer was being driven by Craig Saxon but it was have something going here we get set up for and right behind Jimmy Spencer is the two-parter talk about how well he performed in the April race Earnie the Jimmy Spencer got together car continues to lead coming down here at completing life orange car number 17 first of all it's not too far he would be the sixth place car 14 Shepard is the left bound in car number 75 that's because these cars are the weight will not the prize will not bless the back that they once they brought up there a little bit you know they they get that food this worn off a good racing surface so they get a little better traction up there that big crash down in turn number two Davey Allison and Bob so is Derek coke and Mark Martin three cars involved in this incident in turn number two car that's in the middle of the racetrack [Music] can see that mark headed in the right direction and is moving away but he was involved and so is dairy coat and trickle dick trickle is sitting at the end of the pit wall over there isn't identify the window so dumb Eclair suck the dick crippled are down on the inside get rode on the backstretch so there were at least four cars involved in that crash it looked like they will take a look in a moment but maybe maybe Alice in a park park might have gotten together they're going into that turn there was a lot of traffic they was very very heavy back there Dave his car appeared to be a little suits going on in the rear main fire doors that get steamed for the overflow come now that there's Davey coming out of the car thank goodness that he's okay our concern with Dick Trickle has not exited his car yet Dale Earnhardt the leader is in for a pit stop and Jack arute will call this stop well I guess he isn't there so we'll call it for you the Richard Childress and Kirk shell were Dean crew going to work on the right side of the car now Jerry punch is an Alan Kulwicki spit well they have changed right-side tires to come around to the left side of the 0x Ford and the Billy angle has the big jack underneath the car pumping hard and they are putting the left side rubber on the car Alan Kulwicki this biding time Bernardo Thompson [Music] we'll follow the Rusty Wallace car down pit road both cars headed down to road bike to turn one as pit work has been completed Dillon on to the racetrack wait up is underway in turn number two Davey Allison's car is still on the in the middle of the racetrack and the entrance to the pit area on the backstretch will be back with more of our live coverage after these messages [Music] back at bristol International Raceway in Tennessee for the bush 500 Winston Cup race now we're under our fifth caution of the evening because of this incident in turns one and two well Davey Allison has spun out on the racetrack Mark Martin went by down on the inside we couldn't tell if somebody got into Davey if they got together going into the turn but anyway he came out the worst aware and there is the work that's going on to the Mark Martin car right now also involved in that crash Dick Trickle and Derek cope Jack arute is with Davey Allison and five good news he's okay but Davey what happened up there Jack I'm not sure car just broke loose going in the first turn and I couldn't save it I tried to get it turned around and get it backed up against the wall as quick as I could but I couldn't keep it up there and I track it just so slick out there right now I slid down in front of some other cars and got hit a couple of times I hate it for everybody else that got involved in it but I'm not sure what happened well a tough break this is two nights in a row that he's had to come to the infield infirmary and been released but he's out of the race early tonight as well another honest race driver there said it just lost it going into the first turn and I take my hats off to those guys whenever they say that well you know one of the terms we hear a lot about is toe-in and toe-out well what is it all about Benny Parsons can explain in another track fact Trackbacks are brought to you by the robert bosch corporation makers of bosch platinum the ultimate sparkplug tow-in on a race car is a very important thing toen is making sure that the front tire goes straight ahead how these fellas do it is they pull a car up on front end place these are the plates and they revolve so that we make sure we don't have any deflection in the rubber and the tire and get a false reading and then the establish dead center on the steering box see the yellow dot on the steering box that means that the steering box is going straight ahead then they put the steering wheel holder on the steering wheel to hold the steering box straight ahead they take a string go down the left side of the tire to make sure that the left front tire is going straight ahead and they use the turnbuckle down that's what you see in now to adjust the tire in and out whichever way it needs to go then you take the tow stick around to the right front now Daytona and Talladega you'd once set the toe in about 1/32 out toe out because you don't want to scrub any speed down the straightaway all the rest of the race tracks 1/8 to up that's all you ever wonder about toe-in and toe-out and we'll be back with more from bristol International Raceway after this [Music] three flag out once again back to racing Geoff Bodine has a lead in car number five second place Witney now there are a couple lap cars that number five car there the cool Rikki take second away from Rusty Wallace here comes want to get up and leave this way by here comes Jimmy Spencer to take away another position and Ken Schrader's now right behind Rusty Wallace he has second down the number seven card number three bowtie continually that number two car Ricky Rudd who had lost two lamps a little bit earlier as his back he's only one laughs down now [Music] car Morgan Shepherd isn't I'm going to stay out there she comes out trying to get by to not make it it's going to be interesting to see boat and the other is trying to get through these three cards they touch coming off the turn they do consciously hit pretty hard some of the paint trading going on and I wish you guys would quit that they learn on the Winston Cup later back he's won six tunas third place in the race running sixth in line I think those cars at front oh maybe everybody is being very careful not to over and put yourself in a disaster a situation willing to eating things out on the inside outside is on the inside quickly try to take second place away let's see if Dale earnheardt can make it work down on the bottom of the racetrack and Alan Kulwicki are side-by-side as they cross the line here comes Jimmy Spencer to challenge our cookie black 3 Dale Earnhardt here he comes on the high side and turn three hard looking for the lead trying to get past Jeff behind he's going to get it indeed he does his background we have Jeff behind in second Jimmy Spencer and Rusty Wallace now rusty seems to have picked back up a little bit he was falling back there for a while first six cars running let's go to Jerry punch who can give us some information on Rusty Wallace so very tight when he went back to green-light you quit driving he just couldn't get the car to turn to the corner that's why at least five or six cars passing now the car appeared to be coming into his own the cars are getting worn a little bit is not nearly as tight as it was he can drive the cars well he's certainly looking a lot better now than he was a few laps ago meanwhile Dale but input him one two straightaway Rick Wilson yeah he just came out of here it's up and he's not getting back up to speed so he's going back into the pits once again because that Sunday afternoon live on ESPN at the southern 5:00 of race day on the that would say our heart has caught ricky rudd on the left ear screen there the green car Ricky Rudd and Morgan Shepherd out front Morgan is in the B plan laughs Ricky Rudd [Music] dispose of Ernie Irvan and here comes Dave alongside of Ricky Rudd and that tries to put outsider ricky rudd hold up down dip down to the inside for sure our dead at a speed of 115 point 8 compared with 11720 follower the pole speed but obviously they learn since qualifying there's Rusty Wallace and Jimmy Spencer running nose to tail on the racetrack and this is for fourth place here comes some Rusty Wallace and see him working keep another control on the poor and the number 11 car I'm Terry Labonte is also right on the move the best we've seen him all but after this plant pit stop he has come back up through there so here do they made some adjustments on the Budweiser look at Spitzer now sneak right up on the and Rusty Wallace read Jimmy Spencer and we saw the debrief line when they made the contact the racetrack jackaroo keep talking Debray off these car 25 car that we saw just a moment ago as Ken trainer and he too is in the battle for position but Jimmy Spencer and car number 88 is fourth and Rusty Wallace is fifth the 7 car valid koa key is in third [Music] a body's car you aren't going to believe this gentleman the checking with Tim brewer asked him what sort of adjustments that they make [Music] all night in fact they're a little upset with Darrin they said you just that's kind of unbelievable to me well it could be Jack that the track is coming to him the way the car is set up the track will change as the race goes along the talk could have been a little tight early on it it's working to his advantage a lot of the drivers were complaining really not for the way they set it up in factory to stop some of the initials some of the teams did loosing the cars up those terry labonte was the winner of the bush 500 back in nineteen at Bristol in 1989 for junior Johnson but he we'll be leaving that team of course next year to form his but he went in the pits of just the levitical the pits oh that's there's Darrell Waltrip in car number 17 running in eighth position behind him is Bobby Hillin and mark eriik and the number 33 car the green and white night and the final car on the lead lap that's Harrigan and here we are riding with him z Mark Martin there with side by side with Terry Labonte into single file formation going through the corner so here again is in night the final car as everything is being led by from canal North Carolina with 173 laps out of 500 completed at restored [Music] it began as an idea on the sands of Florida's beaches and today it captures the gamut of emotion it's a combination of art science and excitement it's the nascar weekly racing series it comes to life every weekend at over 80 speed ways of cross America its stock car racing at its colorful best it's NASCAR where legends are born we have a leader number three Daler has been so dominant in the last few laps but he had to make a pit stop a tire probably was the story is that right Jerry [Music] here coming out of the tire a tough break for her now the wiki is taking over the lead Bob this is the first time sorry the Winston Cup race since the coca-cola 600 is Charlotte back invasion he has just had some miserable luck in the although he did put together a top ten a tenth place finish last weekend at Michigan and Pepsi 400 but he's also had a dropped him in the point standings as a matter of fact he was in the top five at one point leading here tonight it's a lap down but as Gerry indicated that doesn't mean Bernard's can work now the way he can run the fingers down he's about to cut now it is the fastest car on the racetrack so fifty-five is at least two laps down to the field but this battle for the six position involves the 25 car Ken Schrader and car of Terry Labonte front it's a single file formation and popping Alan Kulwicki Jeff bodean and Rusty Wallace right here I'll take these cars very evenly matched quick you passport out of MoMA going that looks like slow down walk the faster with you back in London he's been watching the whole day a Ford leads a Chevy second of the Pontiac third and now Jimmy Spencer in car number 88 is being passed by Phil Parsons who again is at least two laps down to the field got things worked out on that car here is mine you know we keep touching coming up the fourth corner or you say a lot of good carotids going on just not able to travel but neither is boat I never hear my Rusty Wallace wants to leave definitely to leave desperately in what when desperately because he wants the Winston Cup after losing it last year and look at the our knees on the March once again now remember he's a lap down so he's going to have to catch and right down the leaders and then hope for a caution but yes he is he just moved around the fourth place car Jimmy Spencer there just pulled away from him and those three cars are confronted by be pretty tough to pass but he is at the moment a lap down meanwhile that battle for second place is good now but and Rusty Wallace there you can see how close he is to the lead once again Rusty Wallace looking to the inside of Jeff Conine coming up quarter number four rusty tries to position some of the inside and Adon that deal here bill Parsons good now whatever maybe heaven I lost a couple of laps good but here's they learn on the black he's coming on the Goodrich shovel oh he is really happening good he just had a tire to go chants away that's racist rather easy than they bed easily we sell photon and take a peek inside coicou just a moment ago coming to buy Kulwicki to go you're fine bill Bart by on the racetrack and let him go to make his pit stop Morgan Shepherd he has put him a lap down now Morgan has got back into late laughing later so he's riding pretty comfortably out there he's able to stay out there and should another cost let's see if Dale Earnhardt second place here he is working to the inside once again off the board running side by sir on the second quarter they're still side collective driver his battle you get the position this time they broke food shift a little bit coming off in it with the left the fifth caution maketh the sixth caution period of the evening is out Jeff bodean turn to did not get the laughs that did not beat quickie back to the line so he's still a lap down bo9 has gotten the car off the wall is limping toward the pits but I don't think he can steer it something as a wedge there by their left front - laughs rear tires completely flat you can see that the real lot of damage done to believe I care very good breakfast it looks like the frame is dragging on the car and he barely can't get the thing to move all right so we're gonna have pit stops once again Jerry punch is italica wikkeez pit well this route is fill angle the crew to the restroom gonna work on ellika Whitney's carnival team to all four tires under this caution right side tires going on the car while Paul Andrews has the left side let's take it off the carpet the Jackson agent to Whitney on top rough t-wolves gonna be the street rusty won't this part out the jack he is the name of drag race down pit road and apparently Rusty Wallace will make the entry other yes he did he beat Alan onto the racetrack as everybody's service has been completed now and they go back out on the racetrack with the exception of Geoff Bodine and they're trying to straighten that car out to get him back in competition contact little awkward services [Music] Jack arute is right there a little bit of a problem getting the frame up off on the on the left-hand side here they had two five their crew members to lift the car up they now have it up off the jacks they're pulling away the sheet metal they've changed the right side tires and one of the problems they're having is actually down by the brake duct work in a they're using a sledgehammer to try and straighten things out but this will be costly for Jeff what I know ram solo and now they're gonna have to continue their work and he'll go down at least one laughs and maybe more Jeff Bodine and here is a replay of what happened when they learn hard trying to get back in the lead lap just nudge is Jeff behind as they come off of the second turn since bowed on into the spin into the outside retaining wall back in hits he jumps up high hit it pretty hard then this idea to look like some awfully hard contact with the outside retaining wall here we see just a little bit of a nudge there yep and it didn't take much because the cars are so near out-of-control Vinnie when they go especially coming off of the turn and and just seen him around so caution period number six on Bristol International Raceway and the bush 500 [Music] lap 205 and Morgan Sheppard's car has expired we just went green and the car just literally blew up Morgan Shepherd put out a lot of moisture on the racetrack and turns number one and two the caution flag came out immediately Dale Earnhardt got the lap back and forth Shepherd had just gotten his lamp back with that caution that came out when Jeff bouton spun and Bourquin was in good shape to be in contention for the win and then something happens to the Valvoline Pontiac you can see butch Bob Bob prohibited them with the hood up of the car and it could be a tall line all battle not only the engine is blown so they're gonna try to fix it are i Rusty Wallace is the leader of the race and here is how he has progressed to that point he started 10th was 7th at the end of 100 laps was 5th at the end of 150 now on lap 204 he is our leader and Jerry punch is with Barry Dotson well gentlemen we've seen on the resource rusty Wallace's car seems to fade back in the early a few laps let's find out from Barry Dodson he's talking to his brother Jon Donson here Barry what the problem may be with rusty very talking to rusty right now listening to what rusty had to say about the car bury your car seems not to be able to get going for a few laughs to the green flag oh out what is that it's been tied you know we knew we had to race up here but we didn't know what's gonna rain we might have the wrong gear in it if it gets a little slicker we'll be good shape so well they're hoping it'll be okay so they're cleaning up the racetrack what his entrance did he spin out or something what's he doing I think he did yes you're kidding I think the truck was on the high banks up on turn number four and it slid down the bank II wasn't going fast enough to stay here kitty well we've seen about everything that I haven't we're not even halfway through this race there it is there it is just slidin down across the racetrack those guys sit on the back they're just taking a ride let's go to Jack arute he's with Jeff Hammond well Jeff Hammond your car is beginning to run much better than it did early on in the race what are the changes you've made well Jackie uh right there at one time the car got a little bit loose on one set of tires so we made a little adjustment and it didn't it didn't really help us so we've come back and made an adjustment put some waves back in the car and he said it just got a little bit of run right there the car felt like I was tied again so we're just kind of chasing track just a little bit jason tires we're not bad off when you chase the track you know you did them you did all your practice today in the heat and also during the day and now it's a little more humid right is hot how big a change if you had to make in your in your tactics for this race because of that well what happens is a racetrack you know how they have a tendency to get a slicker because of the Sun but tonight they'll get slick because of the asphalt itself will start you know get a little bit feathered up plus you start getting a track all down so the conditions will be pretty close what we saw on a Saturday so that's the good part about practicing the heat it really helps they want some momentum because when they go to Darlington next week they're looking for a million dollar payday indeed they are and we'll have a live at 12 15 X Sunday afternoon here on ESPN our Winston Cup replay this week takes us back to the early 70s right here at Bristol International Raceway Winston Cup replays are brought to you by the first name in filters purolator exceptional protection for exceptional vehicles like yours 1969 Bobby Isaac is on the pole for the southeastern 500 at Bristol and the track was just as tough back then Frigga breasts are Leroy Yarborough Richard Petty and David Pearson a standing-room-only crowd of 28,000 are seeing some great action here SEC Hutcherson finding the going tough number six is charged in Charlie Watts back and even cale yarborough loves the Wood Brothers mercury Isaac after leading 229 lapses out with a broken radiator hose Donnie Allison and Buddy Baker are fighting for position with 15 laps to go Pearson the leader has engine problems and Bobby Allison and Mario Rossi dodge wins for the second time in the 69 season late 69 instead of early 70s here at Bristol but nevertheless some great action back then and were seeing some great tonight in 1989 and we'll be right back [Music] back at Bristol where the lead is being held by Rusty Wallace and next Sunday 8 days from now the Winston million the Heinz southern 500 live at 1250 Eastern Time on ESPN that's the race that darrell waltrip could win 1 million dollars it's part of race day America other live coverage that day includes the Indy car race at Lexington Ohio the NHRA drag races the US Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park and the EMSA race from San Antonio Texas the number six car of Mark Martin is shown at the moment in 14th position he finds himself going into this race in third position in Winston Cup points 95 behind Dale Earnhardt and our question was how would you feel if you won the championship without winning a race I'd apologize to the racing world for not winning the ranks I take that billion dollars and bring like in it or be a tremendous accomplishment no matter what I mean it don't matter how you get it if you got it you got it if you win it you take the million dollars you smiled you say thank you and you take it use it for what it's worth but I would probably apologize for not winning a race I think I take the money in run by Lockheed I'd be a lot of it and Bob tickets you know last week Jack arute did a Sterling Marlin crashed up in Michigan and he said that the accelerator home he did he had a problem the hi enjoy yeah and you have and I asked you what it was I'm joy ride and I didn't have a clue so Jack arute I asked him to find me and I'm joining I tell Bob Jake is water hi I'm John is we dad Benny ladies and gentlemen welcome to marine remedial racing 101 Bob this is a heim joint Benny this is a Heim dren let me explain to you how it works okay see anytime that you have to have an axis this way and up and down you utilize a heim joint that's got a little ball bearing in it with a hole through it and that's where you put the bolt this one is right off a bill Elliott's car off one of his throttle linkage remember at Watkins Glen yet a heim joint frees up now when it freezes up it doesn't move properly and makes the throttle hang up that's exactly what happened to Elliott it also happened to Sterling Marlin Elliott at Watkins Glen Marlin in Michigan so far no I enjoy problems here at Bristol but I thought of educates you guys just a little bit from pit road thank you very much Jack now my question to Benny had the heim joint get its name guys I know okay professor Hine I suppose that right yeah he was from Heidelberg or was it Feinberg but you see you know what he's telling us something we don't even know if he's done so true that's all right having some problems and that's bill Elliot he's Fanny in the PS they got the hood up on the course forward and now they're putting it back down but there's been smoke coming from under the hood bill is running one lap down he's running in the 15th position right but he stays just one man as he goes back out this is the second time that he's been in with the hood up all the curves for could be surely let's take a look at those who have led a lap here so far Jeff bodean Dale Earnhardt Darrell Waltrip Alan Kulwicki and the current leader Rusty Wallace and also those that are out of the race down clue Joe Ruttman Gary Koch breaks ax Rick Wilson Davey Allison and Dick Trickle now Morgan Shepherd calls this problem that we have a tremendous amount of the quick drive down on the racetrack that's why we're not back to green guys this thing it would be so slick if he locked marbles out there but mortgage if we just came back in he with the Valvoline Pontiac so he did not bullet easy for all for an old line or something of that nature and now we see that the tractor is going to blow the speed drive down off the track let's go down to Jenn well gentlemen the problem is you watch billion exit the pits one more time he's back and forth here on pit road and he has an overheating problem now what they're doing is they're trying to refill the radiator in the water cooling system with this pose here it's a quick fitting hose that fits into an inlet right in the front of the car they filled the pressurization they try and fill it up with as much cold water as they possibly get to try and solve the heating problem do this several times in fact they'll do it as often as they can under the luxury of the caution but a tough break for Bill Elliott not only self-admittedly out of the hunt for the championship but now out of the hunt for the wind in the bush 500 all right and so we are under a very lengthy caution here while the work on the Eliot machine goes on as they're trying to soak up some of the moisture on the racetrack [Music] welcome back to Bristol International Raceway for the Winston Cup Series only race under the lights the bush 500 [Music] our speed world coverage is being brought to you by Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately by Bush beer the beer with a taste as smooth as its name and by Quaker State motor oil the McKim stands for quality always has always will [Music] still under caution they've got a tremendous amount of oil dry on the racetrack and they brought out a blower onto the racetrack to kind of get it off of the racing surface itself Elmo lagna the pace car driver now says it's one of the worst oil spills that he has seen on a racetrack I tell you what you supposed it let me Morgan Shepherd I evidently his BUN oil line off the automobile and these there we see Morgan Chairman's family and all that family norm is on the racetrack and these cars carry around about a case about 24 quarts of oil and Jerry punch has something on this story but that's exactly what happened Benny you know mortgage effort the oil cooler in the rear of the car which is a very small radiator type device what's the oil circulates through the state cool exploded inside the car and dumped 17 quarts of oil on the racetrack now I have to go for the crew she doesn't have much of 17 quarts all is well enough to go around Bristol race white twice and apparently that's where it is all around the racetrack completely covering the racing surface of s car and an interest of safety is trying to get that oil dry worked into the racetrack but 17 quarts of all is quite a bit unfortunately mortgage ever got the car cut off so it didn't cook the motor they were able to come in replace the cooler and get the Valvoline Pontiac back out yeah there is a on the high side and the low side of the racetrack there is Jeff Bodine in car number five he was involved in with Dale Earnhardt earlier in the race and let's go down to Jack arute and Bob I'm with one L Wilson who's the crew chief on Jeff Bodines car first of all the assessment of the damages to the car Waddell well they got the Left Front and the left rear was able to get same time you know we've all free laugh they're really heard of golf running for the good tonight pretty good that's an understatement the car seemed very very strong and in fact much stronger than maybe we're used to hear it Bristol for this team how frustrating is it to the team when you have something like that happen well you know we've come up here before with Jeff and run good you know we have to deal with Bill and lost that race and you know we normally run pretty good year because this was one of Jeff's better racetracks but you know tonight him in our harbors race and I get together the car so you know it's just one of those things I really didn't see the Reg so I can't comment much on that it's very disappointing for the crews down here that's one of the things we should always remember they don't get to see the replays the luxury of the TV viewers so they have to go home and punch in the VCR before they can tell exactly what might have happened to their racecar all right Jeff the line of course has already announced that he will not be back with this team next year well it's always a surprise to me and properly to you too what in the world will Betty Parsons half of the week be this week since I started doing the hat of the week piece I've had a lot of unusual hats but none more unusual than this solar-powered hat a little fan as soon as the Sun is set it starts turning and coos your head up this is compliments of Shelby green from Gaithersburg Maryland now in Robins North Carolina there's a little two-year-old girl Paulette Casey she's having her seventh surgery so the people around inside did have a celebrity auction trying to raise her some money they've scheduled early for October the 28th 5 p.m. the Davis community center there's gonna be lots of racing items many other items to go by and bid for October the 28th 5 p.m. Davis community center Robbins North Carolina we'll be talking to Benny a little bit more about the Hat of the week in just a moment when we return for more live action of the bush 500 from Bristol Tennessee [Music] all of these championship winning drivers have one thing in common Goodyear racing Eagles the race winning technology that's founded the Goodyear racing Eagles can also be found on the Goodyear ego line of high-performance street radials the best selling performance tires in the world Goodyear Eagles for the spirit of a champion that's in all of us unexpectedly Rusty Wallace has come in for a pit stop and has completed in goes back on the racetrack took all four tires so apparently he felt that maybe he had a tire going down or something in this caution of course they've run through a lot of stuff on the racetrack but he's been primarily the quick drive that they put out there to soak up the all that Morgan Shepherd put down and I don't know maybe the car just didn't feel right to him and if you wanted to come in get 40 tires one of the proven one across and did a serious job of cleaning the windshield on Buster's car maybe was just simply a dirty windshield if he wanna get cleaned up and while he was in the middle for two hours because he gonna be at the back of the back here back at the poppy plant all right now let's show you everybody that's out on the racetrack right now and we'll try as best we can to tell you what position they are running in the lead now goes to the number 7 car of Alan Kulwicki and remember he was the pole sitter of this race and Stan's chance of winning 136 thousand eight hundred dollars in bonus money besides the amount that he would win for actually taking home the checkered flag here the car to the outside number 17 is Darrell Waltrip and he is in second position Phil Parsons there in car number 55 is being shown two laps down in 16th position Terry Labonte and number 11 is also on the racetrack right alongside of bill Parsons and he is being shown in the third position then the next car behind that would begin straighter let's never see Rusty Wallace and Brett Bodine as the cars followed the face car off turn four you can see the tremendous amount of oil dry that's down there the inside the racetrack that has been blown off the actual groove into the apron of the racetrack here's how the port leaders are running Dale Earnhardt who is the leader in cuesta Cup point standings currently running sixth Rusty Wallace now entries pitstop is running eighth he's the last car in the lead lap they're eight cars in the lead lap mark mark is one lap down earned to being shown in 14th place he of course is in third place in western cowboy standings and Darrell Waltrip is running in second place that is in fourth in the points standings and Davey Allison who had moved up to theft after last week at Michigan now out of the race so he has a good chance of dropping down Bill Elliott wasn't too far behind to coming into this race let's continue some of the guys that are still out there on the racetrack Bobby Hillin still out there the number 25 car Ken Schrader is shown in fourth position also a Neil Bonnett Jimmy Spencer Dale Earnhardt Ricky Rudd Larry Pearson Dale Jarrett Harry Gant and Morgan Shepherd some of the guys that are still out there on the racing let's go to Jerry punch we're standing with Harold Eliot Harold why the unscheduled stop for Rusty Wallace that we had a flat left rear tire before rusty do it our friendly back tool salesman came over from the back straightaway and told us because he could see it over there so I guess we have to buy some more back tunes well a break for Rusty Wallace the gentleman on the backstretch happened to see Rusty's left rear tire going down and came running over and told the crew they brought rusty in and indeed it was going flat so a break for Rusty Wallace how about that yeah that is unbelievable and folks believe it or not yeah I know you're now gonna believe this but we're about to go back to race had a nice opportunity to go the refrigerator and get some refreshment and now settle back for some racing as we go to competition there on its peak the green flag 27 where full speed there is terry labonte in third position and trader running for bed Darrell Waltrip has arranged for cola key when all the minutes championship which is worth one it's very possible the next two months darrell waltrip there's a million next Sunday and a million for the Winston Cup gears how he went into the league well Alan quick his car just broke loose as he started off return to Gerald had already committed for the inside of the racetrack which was the right place to be but quickly went high here's Terry Labonte now working well for you back buffer and coitus car there it goes hi here comes here nobody boy do they and Labonte has second now here comes ken schrader in the red number 25 the outside him traitor running in for Thursday learn heart running in the fifth position now [Music] ken schrader pass also kyledoes and something is wrong with the to the racetrack the car shoot mild outside but he'll be coming to the Penton unscheduled pit stop coinkidink matches there he told the crew II think you got a target [Music] trying to change the Wi-Fi [Music] the race isn't over yet but that could have been $180,000 pit stop right there landfire uranium goal while that was going on Morgan Shepherd both his the backstretch so it was now second third Dale Earnhardt and here he comes to close to the inside and rather easily takes over the third spot and heart is once again on the his chances too much if we think this race tonight because the car was so strong so dominant in the early part observation what to go back in the lead lap down he's sneaking up on the number second these are sneaking up on anybody all day leaders radar a lot of smoke on to his car coming on as it goes into turn one let's see is it mentioned it will smoke the racetrack and this is from my [Music] he comes in for a stop ken schrader who was running in for position they're gonna go to the right change tires Jack what else is good the engine is still running cops to try and ascertain what thank God and absence of a lot of life alright Ken Schrader's number 25 Bulger's Chevrolet goes behind the wall has passed ever the body and [Music] just making up the way just leaves seven cars in the lead lap did his razor head his problem leading Dale Earnhardt in second place and Jimmy Spencer Pam Perry and then just was at a matter of car legs from darrell waltrip between the two is Hut Stricklin that charter 457 her heart is gonna have the lead there you see the interval it's just a little a half-second Asfour narcos 1 & 2 but he's going what happen with Delta brother behind us even that ated trouble getting out of me his secret drove by half-second and it is closing Waltrip entered our first and second nearing the halfway point of the bush 500 102 brother 247 laps have been completed next time it'll be 248 and here comes Bernard go under the inside going out fairly effecting an unscheduled pit stop to the inside down the backstretch now we'll try to pull alongside of Darrell turn still he can however as waltrip is doing a nice job protecting the position and holding off the challenge for the moment a little bit sideways there in turn number two and this time boy 250 laps completed and darrell waltrip is going to be the leader at the halfway point GM Goodwrench Chevrolet in the [Music] third place redwood I going another lap down night here after having a good qualifying there is the indication that we are ken schrader has come back down on to the racetrack after losing a lot left the pants with the hood waiting to see if Dale Earnhardt can take over the lead from surprise [Music] Darrell starts working pretty well too this racetrack for coffee here is a battle for in 27 Rusty Wallace meanwhile Larry Pearson would play a part in and here is Gant and Rusty Wallace position glass up here again arrested black barrel he speaks down on the inside here comes Rusty Wallace to drive by hairy hand and rusty goes to fifth the inside group stepped on let's say I think Americans that more than going darrell waltrip continues to lead the bush 500 there is her heart once again knocking on the door Darrell Walker has one here at Bristol e17 one to 84 Martinez won seven races here at Bristol the last nine and he won one in Victor Jordan or seven Victor's number that's a career here we go is going to get it [Music] for me to take the lead there'll see you later and he did and he so a change of leader once again just past the halfway point puts Dale card back in command the bush 500 at a sold-out Bristol International Raceway [Music] and second at the bush 500 Winston Cup race for Bristol International Raceway the number 3 car of Dale Earnhardt leads the 17 car of TripIt here's the field rundown at the end of 265 laps now we've had nine lead changes among five drivers so far here tonight and what's very interesting in case you're just joining us bill heli as fall into the pit area they're still working on his car he was six in points going in not having a good night and the car that was the driver that was fifth in points going into tonight's race namely now the race so we will go the next Sunday [Music] back to 13th now Alan Kulwicki watch 13th and Ella has passed again if you're just joining us we have had no major incidents no major crashes of any sort to this point Davey Allison was involved in a cry Sterling Marlin there on your screen number 94 has been involved in incident so far tonight but he is still in competition and it's been a very clean race were inside sterling Marlins car right now watching second place Darrell Waltrip and just ahead of him the leader Dale Earnhardt for one reason [Music] national race here's Dale Jarrett and Carver 29 the position right now so he goes to the lamps pretty good that he's got a set of tires on there now what are the drivers mentioned is a possible replacement for ricky rudd in the Kenny Bernstein team for next season there could work the inside let's see if Daryl Walker can go back into the lead and pass Dale Earnhardt the crown is on its feet and are they cheering they can't do it though [Music] currently three laps down running in 14th position Ernie Irvan gets by here comes Walter now here is Jimmy Spencer in car number 88 who is for the 27 car of Rusty Wallace them and just behind as the 33 car of Harry Gant who is in sixth position now Spitzer had the racetrack between himself and and Rusty Wallace just a few laps ago rusty and Harry Gant upon him and now they threaten to take away the position that's ricki run at number 26 not off the lead lap but here is Rusty Wallace now trying to pull alongside of Jimmy Spencer as we see how Aaron sees rescue moved out on the inside he would like to do the same thing besides I've been busy just Tribeca pants too Waltrip has pulled up once again a bailar threaten to take over the lead coming out of turn number four but could end the job done but these cars are pretty equally matched and speaking of being equally match of Wallace almost got the position away from hey Spencer but couldn't it boy you got to take your hats off to Jimmy Spencer III once again the inside Harry Gans car watching the battle Rusty Wallace immediately and Jimmy Spencer just ahead of rusty [Music] arrey has lots of taking fifth away from rusty Emily [Music] ricky rudd up in front I'm pulling away Ricky Carly running [Music] there you can see you've about today the fifth position now and Rusty Wallace drops back to six and there is the chakra just outside here against car [Applause] the rest of all discard not working as well as we've seen you work on this racetrack if most of the race mismatched set of god or maybe even attire that's a little bit slide round [Music] someone now has a several car lengths between the two next week four we asked him are you thinking much more about running next week at Darlington the lady in black graduate you don't race anything but the track when you go there and then you got to go down there and with all of that talking about one about $100,000 next Sunday afternoon on ESPN of race day America here on ESPN II course he's the only driver eligible for the $1,000,000 and he's going to that's for sure right now he runs at second position - they learned our Mark Martin just had contact with the wall has pushed in the right corner yes he has the right front of that it's really bad you can see if there's he gets he battled the inside of the racetrack he went at the end of the pit so next time around mark was running in the two laps down you earlier for the race started despite the fact that he started well back in the pack he had great hope for this race losing the turn for Dale Earnhardt slides through turn number four and does make contact with the wall I thought he was going to save it and not make contact with the wall but he did at the last moment now scraping along the wall now gets it off and continues on Bernard has a problem put the dough in is not play out on the car we see the right front where you see the right oh yeah it's going way out he can hardly turn it to the left we talk about incidents that could mean the Winston Cup and we just saw one let's go to Jerry punches in mark Martin's pit heavy sheetmetal lemon we're heating severely running semen smoke spewing from beneath the hood and they learn hard also be making me Briana [Music] [Music] the Goodrich crew girls chattering like - pool champion it will make a four-tire change richard childress down the car right there what they're gonna have to do [Music] trying to see if they get that car fixed the mark Martin's proving while this behind the Earnhardt cruise trying to stay away from the car already crew chief and team manager Steve bill as has gotten the bird or his handler trying to work on that car let's go up pit road the Jack ermine wear it Dale Walter mephitic Jack and Darrell Waltrip has come to the service of the tide pit crew led by Jeff Hammond they're cleaning the windshield they're going to change four tires all the way around in the meantime the car that was running in the fourth position that is Terry Labonte Labonte is now completing his four-tire stop as well well party in front is just making a change on left's and rights Junior Johnson but Darryl Waltrip will go out ahead of Terry Labonte Labonte gets blocked in just for a moment by Ricky Rudd but he's off it away as well in the pit area as half the cars are fitted here on the main straightaway in half on the backstretch but still some pretty tight positions down there on pit road Darrell Waltrip goes back out onto the racetrack and he'll be the leader when we come back for more of the Busch 500 stay with us [Music] the work continues on Dale Earnhardt's car he spun and hit the wall just moments ago and by the way we're on lap number 300 let's go to Jerry punch for report on the repair work well compound problems for Dale Earnhardt is a good rinse proof first of all the car is overheating the sits here on pit road they are spraying water in the radiator here in the front that Cecil Gordon and Richard chillers working on the front of the car the primary problem from the contact with the wall out of turn four is a vent steering arm an idler arm on the right side had been boat in severely they haven't they have a torch out there on the side of the car they will belt that try to get it straight background let's take a look and see what happened a large gentleman all right and this is what happened Earnhardt was approaching Geoff Bodine and Alan Kulwicki and the car got loose and turned form they just went the back end was he went high it went around now they said had an overheating problems he was sitting in the pits there with a lot of water coming from the overflow maybe he got some water under his rear wheels but he just spun it up they're not coming in contact with no other car and it was Mark Martin is still in the pit so there momentarily while I was in the pits he you see he's come back out now but the first and third place drivers and whiskey cup bought standings were in the pits with big problems they're the top five now with 200 more laps to go Waltrip is the leader Terry Labonte a second Jimmy Spencer third Rusty Wallace fourth and Harry Gant running fifth as we are about to go back to green you know looking at Rusty Wallace last year is where he here he lost to Winston gunpoint Lee he just might take it back this race that's a good point remember him last year at this time he suffered a horrendous crash as a matter of fact dr. Jerry punch saved his life as crash during a practice session he was not able to complete the entire distance sought relief from Larry Pearson last year lost the point's lead here Bill Elliott took over the point's lead went on to win and we could be seeing in total reversal of that situation here this evening Dale Earnhardt is six laps down and Jimmy Spencer in car number 88 and Rusty Wallace and Harry Gant are really going at it for third position here it is from Harry Ganz car [Music] including the seven carve Alan Kulwicki [Applause] position he watches long ago there is here's the later Ricki ride viewing traffic he's only one laughs tail he is indeed he's in sixth position so Ruud is showing some strength here in the quake and one time he was two laps down he got down as a result of making an unscheduled pit stop for a flat tire under green flag conditions but he's fought he waited back to one lap down now finding get back in the lead lap and there is the second place car of Terry Labonte number 11 the number 5 car of Jeff bodean is there's terry labonte serial 16 that the green flag 12 at the end of 100 laps he was fourth at the end of 200 and finds himself in second place now at the end of 300 five laps [Music] right behind him is Jeff bodean earlier in the race and did Jimmy Spencer the third place car and he's being followed closely by Rusty Wallace spencer now looking to the inside trying to pass geoff bodine Heena so when the fourth turn here comes Rusty Wallace also jebadiah being shown history clamps down and Mark Martin has continues to have problems let's go to dr. Jerry punch we're bored on that well the number of problems with Martin Martin's call right now there's the car behind the wall but Derrick can't hardly hear you but just winter night you know we had problems with all lakes water lakes water was preying on a weak Sheila could see where I was going hi just a visit rough night for the shrubs like team Garlington they are changing the radiator they do try to get him back out this jack roush tables a never-say-die effort and we have a spin over at turn number two Sterling Marlin has spun and the yellow flag comes out did the leaders take the yellow no I don't think so and for him Ricky right if he can race there welcome back to the line I think Merrill just suddenly realized that here tried trying to get out on the inside let's leave Lambo it's going to be coolest nobody's not gonna do it rusty held them off Oh tough break for Ricky you mean there that's the guy's driving the orange my car but a tough break for Ricky because if he would have gotten around Darryl I think we could see ricky rudd right in the thick of things yep condition really riding good now right he's been running good all night but he has been down as a result of that unscheduled pit stop now Jimmy Spencer in a v8 car had just passed terry labonte turn the body says hey my car's not working right I want to come into the pits and get some new tires on the Budweiser authority sexualize excuse me Bob Jenkins it was a terrific break for Terry Labonte cause it looked like his car was started to drift backwards he gets a caution flag and they're changing rubber on the right side Gerry go ahead and explain it for us well they are going to change four times for Terry Labonte here exactly right Benny Parsons the Bonnies car was drifting back and they were very very concerned about possibly having a tire going down until the break from the body of the Budweiser crew down Tim brewer Mike he'll keep writing the crew now changing right-side tires and they are now working the left side of the car for fresh tires and a club of the fuel for the bank with Budweiser poured and he makes his way back to turn one and behind him pitted was Dale Earnhardt they're continuing to work on that car Earnhardt at the moment is six laps down in 17th position as Terry Labonte rolls back out onto the racetrack we're under our ninth caution period of the evening this forests been over in turn two involving Sterling Marlin back with more right after this [Music] [Applause] [Music] just gone green cars move into turn number two after receiving the green flag on lap 317 we are back to racing and Alan Kulwicki in car number seven one lap down but he on his way now he'll be trying to get his lap back so his ricky rudd in the number 26 green quaker state car this second-place car here's now the 88 Jimmy Spencer and third as Rusty Wallace in 27 and here it's rod still trying to get that lap back back on that last caution play but he was unable to get by Darrell Walker Walter who's your leader [Music] but once again looks inside [Music] [Music] [Music] Terry Gannon carnival 33 and Terry Labonte number eleven are racing for position Phil Parsons still running good in car number some laps on a green black pit stop it he's running good out there we have five cars on the lead lap Labonte is the fifth car and cola key also papi Hilda's a lap down an eighth position mile petty is a lap down in ninth and in tenth two laps down is Dale Jarrett and Neil Bonnett is also two lamps down his Senate Lambeth position only two drivers that are two laps that his job patty spins down the back straightaway we hits a wall hard Kyle penny slams the inside wall off turn number two and brings out another caution he hit it pretty good you didn't see what Kyle was running one lap down in ninth place in the Pete community so another caution flag on lap 325 the ambulance right there we can see smoke coming from the left side of the Pontiac let's take a look at a replay see if we can determine what happened he's already spun and has slid down into the wall at this point well he did hit it hard with the front end of that car before it spun around and then touch the wall backwards so Kyle Petty crashes here on lap number 325 at the bush 500 we'll be right back [Music] Tyrod oh you're tough break back at bristol International Raceway and Kyle Petty's car is still being taken from the racetrack you hit the wall coming off of quarter number two slid down the track and hit the inside wall and so we are still trying to get the car off of the racetrack meanwhile it is Darrell Waltrip who is leading this race under our tenth caution of the evening five drivers in the lead lap Darrell Waltrip Jimmy Spencer Rusty Wallace Harry Gant and Terry Labonte Bill Elliott has dropped out of competition here in the bush 500 he was sixth in points we asked him his feelings about Darrell Waltrip trying to equal his feet 1985 by winning the Winston million next week at Darlington well I can't appeal for him you know in a certain way but still yet he's in a lot better position than I was an 80 pounds play because of so many things as happened the first year all the pressure I was having to deal with otherwise and I didn't know how to deal without is flatly honest to me and I think narrow is it good enough you know he's pretty much cited his team you know and everybody else around here he's pretty much you know God focused on what he's got to do you know where I was still you know having a deal with fans having to deal with sponsors having to deal with this having to deal with that and still having to learn a lot about what's going on anyway but he'll be tough to beat our butts tailors are gonna be you know thirty nine other guys it's gonna try to prove another way so that's how Bill Elliott felt back in 1985 and talking about the pressure that is on Darrell Waltrip next Sunday live on espn2 1250 as Daryl goes for 1 million dollars for those of you not familiar the Winston million and here is the replay now of the spin from Kyle Petty's car he's in some very close competition see Bobby Hillin up in front of him there and I believe that was Jeff Lloyd on that he was right behind as a car then goes spinning around and Wham you can hear it hit the wall almost feeling and then back down to the inside wall that's where it landed and now a real time this wool [Music] and that's the way it sounded too Kyle Petty and this net said you can almost feel the hit I could just to elaborate once again for those of you unfamiliar with the Winston million there are four races that make up that went a million if we can win three of the four you've won a million dollars in Darrell has won two so far four million next Sunday [Applause] [Music] the nice thing about these new cars that were using is they have rubber bumpers so there's real no [Music] the car would appear as he's holding his position in 3rd at the moment just ahead of him is Jimmy Spencer who is in second spot and here comes a whole bunch of cars including Terry Labonte in car number 11 and he is the fourth place car there is Jimmy Spencer at number 88 the blue Crisco and here comes Terry Labonte in number 11 we are one of five have you made a pit stop during this last caution period he was running in giving fence rate just passed me but now Jeff but I'd about to go under care of the bar who is the only lead lap into Harrigan geoff bodine just ahead and dave Marcus to the left [Music] he had a good run last week at Michigan back in March I guess you won one says but he's been there not now as we ride with these guys in in their cars it would appear to us is it you can't see very far around the corner is that right when you go in you're basically looking at the pavement aren't you that's true all you can see 50 yards in front of us that's about all [Music] now to the left of Harry Gant 4:55 hang it in there bill shown in 13th position three laps down is 14 for elapsed mark mark is back in the race in car number six laughs damn he lost a lot there was many points into showing him as 35 left we saw another guy that several laps down to Dale Earnhardt in car number three he is six laps down in the field in 16th position he spun and hit the wall earlier in case you just joined us Dale Earnhardt did has fallen well off the pace here's Terry Labonte coming up on Jimmy Spencer Spencer scar doesn't seem to be working quite as well now he's dropped back behind the leaders in Kerala baatein is running in fifth fourth place about two from jimmy's metro areas in position to do so so Rusty Wallace is now second to leader Darrell Walter Jimmy Spencer Ford's Labonte and v Harrigan as those three cars are close to each other the bond effects look inside of Jimmy Spencer and comes off turn four sad by side from start/finish line Spencer comes back the amazing thing to me is this is the first Winston come start for Jimmy Spencer here at Bristol and we're inside here again again all you see contact there 424 body as they came together we'll make you can see see the smoke fly so laFonda moves to third now like this job is like here again spinning out for me right ahead of him it was left [Music] what you're saying you're right that's some type of problem because we're whitney has gotten fine those drivers back in the lead lap so we will have now seven cars in the lead lap as Ricky Rudd who's been many many laps to get back on the lead lap has and so has Alan Kulwicki and here is Jimmy Spencer who is having some type of problem with his car as he's falling back and lost a couple of positions arrogance car the camera on the right side you can see how close to the wall these cars come as they swing off the corners go to checker Road who can speculate on what's wrong they seems that the cars begun [Music] all right so Jimmy continuing to fall back now back to this position made wild waltrip may have a problem Jerry can you fill us in I just spoke with Jeff Hammond who said that the cut the car is so very lucid they're all having a difficult have a mismatch senator right now [Music] no cloud you get the more cars on well he still has a rather comfortable lead on Rusty Wallace but we'll keep our eye on that situation and see if the interval closes there you can see the interval as daryl is in the extreme left part of your screen now coming down the straightaway will determine exactly how much separation there is between the two rusty crosses the line it's five seconds exactly meanwhile we'll pick up on this battle here involving Terry Labonte and Harry Ginn and here and Ed has just moved around Terry Labonte he passed him coming into turn Cory and has taken over the third position Harry get up to third now we look back and see terry labonte who's in pursuit we're 358 into 500 I think the racetrack has changed seeing a lot of cars that are slipping and sliding back there on the racetrack is getting very very slick I think that Jerry punch hit on sup a little bit ago there has been a lot of caution flags of losing that track position and they're not coming in the race Alan Cohen it was five-second separation just a few laps ago we'll see how much there is now well these lengthen the lead a little bit but Waltrip is going to have to contend with a little bit of traffic here in the next few laps has run and and Kulwicki who are ahead of him are approaching some of the other cars will check the interval once again it was 5 seconds is almost 6 seconds and now let's see what it is at 6.1 second so he's gaining but Rusty Wallace is not running and Terry Labonte you are running in third fourth place they're coming up on rusty won't be long catching up to him as Darrell Walker you can see the mark parked car there number six and there's I am Ricky Rudd right in front looks like girls pick back up a little bit now so Waltrip continues to lead looking for when number 11 here at Bristol International Raceway he has won times on this racetrack and owned it back in the 1981 through 84 period when he won seven consecutive races on the 0.533 mile high bank go hole we'll be back right after this [Music] Racing is one there's a lot going on here at Bristol International Raceway at the bush 500 there the Condor a 17-2 tied Chevrolet leads with 130 laps to go but there are a couple of cars are not doing so well one doing very well as Harry Gann however as he has moved into second position sig Rusty Wallace and we are riding with Harry at the moment and show you how can't went in to second but I went in behind Rusty Wallace going into the turn dips down on the inside gets the nose up under there and then as it goes into the turn he dives down on the inside Wallace's car slips high and just drives right on by and so Russ rusty slows down to frustrate away and here is Terry Labonte's pass of Rusty Wallace that happened a few laps ago and now as we see this replay as Terry Labonte went into third spot Rusty Wallace is definitely having his problems on the racetrack and here's a spin-off of quarter number four it's Dave Marcus backing into the wall on the inside of the racetrack a lot of smoke obscuring the visibility to the other drivers coming off the quarter but everybody is okay and Dave Marcus will get his car headed in the right direction boyacky and ricky rudd stayed in front of Darrell Waltrip so that puts them back in the thick of this thing they're back in the lead lap and the spinnaker just ahead of Rusty Wallace there it is Marcus coming up for woopsy and rusty when he got in the smoke had no more idea where Dave Marcus would then he knew where I was and here the leaders coming down pit road and Jerry punch is there with Daryl Walker tied chevrolet cruze we're going to work on the lead car here at Walter but in time winter here Bristol Raceway there [Music] out there they pleaded the windshield changing rights on tired Jeff Hammond will stamp around slide that Jack put into the big bright orange pied Chevrolet move it up any difference input so that for tire Joe Jack and Walker scoffs a roadie the predicatively here also to [Music] well Jerry as you know Harry game is pitting on the backstretch so he's brought the lead cars down here he's running in second place they've elected as well to go to right side tires and left-side tires they do not run example they will change all [Music] lay out Jackson cleaning the region of the crew goes to work a very quick stop so fire how's the car back in here waiting for the drop of the jack in the signal to go he drops on the backstretch [Music] it stops have been completed movie set for cream right after this [Music] beechwood aged for the taste so crisp and clean so depression it's the king of beers [Music] don't wear on there Waldrop there are three cars ahead of darrell well there were now there are only two and the reason they're only two is because Jimmy Spencer jumped the flag is being given a stop-and-go penalty [Music] so he's back down one lap now now here's Rusty Wallace going to the inside of Terry Labonte and karna 411 looking for second position there is second third and fourth right there it is Labonte Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd and in my opinion the driver we're going to have to watch out for the remainder of the races that Creek Quaker State viewing Ricky Rudd let's go to Jerry punch who has a comment on Jimmy Spencer Jimmy citrus Pontiac they have the ratchet sticking out of the rear window with such a radius up and go penalty the crew [Music] Jerry Dennis pretty up two laps down now and fella that was riding in second third place a little while ago now finds himself two laps down so Jimmy Spencer after running in the top five many many laughs having a great run now goes two laps down Davey Allison is back out of the race after several hundred laps now that he's back out there in a crash earlier today competition meanwhile there trip trying to put another lap on Jeff Bodine in car number five 9 also involved in this duration body right there in second position then comes Wallace and Rudd and Alan Kulwicki who is also on the lead the lead lap is Harry and there are sex at the moment on the passing Jeff what I in the corner number three and you can see Dale Earnhardt has gotten one of his laps back but still he's running out in front of Darrell Walter that's a black car out there just a moment ago before this coffee you got a mismatch said oudarde or maybe and just a few laps his car will be well he certainly didn't get the good start Benny when the green came out just didn't seem to want to go he didn't get passed but on the other hand he wasn't particularly fast on the restart there's Harry camp in sixth position let's go to Jerry punch our sorry jackaroo we talked about his pit stop he has lost the clutch on that car but much is faulty and he is [Music] so Harry Gant will struggle now to maintain that sixth position well as long as he doesn't have to pit it isn't as bad as it could be that's exactly right and he can make it the rest feels of the caution flag should come out that's one thing we should also point out we pin it on about lap 374 and we have no more cautions we won't see any more pit stops exactly got himself back into position for that big money saw his way back into the lead lap and look at him they're running with Ricky Rudd and let's go to Jerry punch for oh no don't Ricky Red Bull gentlemen Ricky Rudd the Bernstein team have been struggling all year long they've been trying the water park would have had their troubles except with the exception of Sears Point a couple of weeks ago I spoke with John Daniel rubber Watkins Whaley Oh the major breakthroughs in the horse collar Department in the hairs intake area it will not become apparent until Bristol but in Bristol we should have something the show and I believe he was exactly right definitely think you're right Jerry that car has been strong all evening it is light the fact that he has well he certainly is not a lame-duck driver it's already been announced that he'll be moving to the Hendrick Motorsports team and drive that car number five I'll be back here at Chevrolet the Jeff Ladon is but Brittany ride is going to try to win every race he can the good race we have going for second third and we saw the orange and white car in front of this he's about 15 20 car lengths ahead of this back button the Goodwrench Chevrolet jumped out of but there wasn't a moment ago but easy if he had got back where he was only five left [Music] six laughter that one for several laps but I think it is tires monocrops down I on the high side and solo Ricky Rudd Alan Kulwicki math like to go he really doesn't doesn't stay up there and believe in the Western gunpoint standing well we're gonna see a tightening of the the moment being shown in Rusty Wallace who is second in points and an 80 going into this race is him tonight and darrell waltrip who was fourth in points going in as you can see is the this race we're gonna see it tightening again as we go to Darlington and there is Alan Kulwicki still looking for the unocal bonus money amounting to one hundred thirty six thousand eight hundred dollars in addition to the prize money for winning there is the amount of track that he has to there is Hut Stricklin by the way in carnival 57 but last weekend but it's not been on the pace tonight Walter show the distance and that's all it means kwikki trying to get inside of ricky rudd that's all there is 436,000 Alan to me no problem yeah right to the fur you looking inside or what this is the battle for fourth here is Kovac side by side with run at the he's gonna yeah because the Hut Stricklin position two don't you know he hated to see that 57 Parker and fun may not get the opportunity for the next few laps certainly have to work and say himself up again let's take a look at our Napa race summary leader Darrell Waltrip has led one laughs at an average speed of eighty one point six six eight miles an hour five liters ten lead changes eleventh caution laps of further 11 caution periods for 70 laps and at the moment we have six cars on the lead lap Dale earnheardt there - licking and resting while this half led as you can see now Alan Kulwicki has taken over the position from Ricky Rudd to brace Joe Ruttman early in a crash derrike cope dropped out so did brakes axe Rick Wilson and Dick Trickle Shepard michael waltrip ken schrader Kyle Petty and Bill Elliott also our mouth of competition Malecha wiki has now moved into the port position Walther blades Bobby is second Wallace's third comes Alan Kulwicki we will be back with more from Bristol International Raceway live coverage of the bush 500 [Music] Darrell Waltrip Stein's Chevrolet leaves the bush 500 and Chevrolet has 126 of the last 37 races here I think juniors car Junior Johnson Chevrolet one about 23 of them though an event and of course the lumen on has never scored a victory here at Bristol looking for it's first and here is Alan Kulwicki who has passed the 27 car of Rusty Wallace and now quick he finds himself in third spot man since car terry labonte is running second in that Budweiser Ford and he is [Music] ricky rudd 26 then Harry 33 and our various he might be one fascist just like manager said the 11 car Gurbani got a race one all the way around anyway we looked through the race sparse and ricky rudd star we got 78 laps to friends so don't go away because this thing is far we're watching Harry Gant ricky rudd 4/6 and Ricky Rudd and battle themselves on the inside first Ewoks takes us by the way stay appears to be going back he was third laughs ago and [Music] here at ganz car [Music] bill parts and stops again on the backstretch fail and the last 10 laps is the second time they stopped under the green [Music] so man sighs blood comes alongside is gonna try to get the position away from moves outward let's go he's in 12 Jeff Bodine is [Music] the Quaker State viewing ricky rudd be [Music] he recants best finish was third in the 1982 Bush 500 and his his 22nd start at Bristol he's got a no one here this evening there 17 not look at the rearview mirror back there in the same straightaway give the 11 less than a sense you got one second you have not too long ago it's about two seconds fella so at the last 10 laps he's got a second off record and he's doing it about two-tenths of a second a lap ablaze now to the inside so he did tenth of a second that he's cutting around the two-car quick heavy there Walker now over 70 laps to go to catch their Walter second plan and here the Obon moves out of the way now carry the body in there [Music] and jr. Johnson's cars have won 21 times here International Raceway I guess 23 stars with no traffic behind although Darryl does have yep now let's see what it is well driving me crazy looks like you're slowing down I speeding up what everything everybody let's see how to look in Ruby and solve the bicycle while Jimmy Spencer in car number 88 Spencer you got 70 laps to go there happy just a little bit spencer three laps down now tell me what would this logically for next weekend we should oh yeah I think hey we got some let's go there hit that million dollars Jack what do you think question he said listen I'd like to win this thing before the checkered flag Falls and I mean is gonna have to contend with terry is still hanging right in there bonnie has won twice in Winston Cup competition so far this year you know anyone at a bodega [Music] this year like ricky rudd P Allison announced formally on Friday that me Winston Cup team for nine if Mike Alexander gets ball clearances from NASCAR he will be the driver they will be Buicks with Papi's says that he doesn't have a sponsor lined up right now Teru stated that the the Allisyn also said in the Media release this he still hasn't given up hopes of getting back in a racecar someday we'll be back with more the bush 500 [Music] rusty and Alan don't agree on much in fact the only thing they do agree on is that you need an antifreeze coolant that handles extreme conditions like scorching heat civ up to 276 degrees and bone numbing colds down to 84 below that's why rusty and Alan both agree on Zarek's antifreeze coolant come on let's go all right I'll Drive I've seen you drive I'll Drive Zarek's antifreeze coolant because extreme conditions demand extreme protection just a lap ago it gets a little how to turn the back into the Budweiser forward breaks loose their tail Jared behind him in the hardest Pontiac Garrett slows to handle this with the bodies pinned to the inside and look what a job he does they're keeping it off the wall it writes itself gets headed in the right direction keeps going no caution boy here's how look from our speed shot which is positioned just under the starburst and Sven is some amazing thing that he didn't go down and just knock the end still running in fifth place now head of Rusty Wallace along is now there's the leader there Walt in second position is tonight and take hold Challenge money there's Alan Kulwicki the Civic's board a lot of racetrack though between himself at the leader Darrell Waltrip almost a half lap Green [Music] still the same race [Music] [Music] tea laps to go 450 event completed [Music] hard racetrack inflicted heavy traffic a lot you can imagine just as close weeps all these fellas rubbing each other's clothing just how much of your mind you have to cost tremendous difference of desperation [Music] Harry Danton still following Ricky Rudd Walter now [Music] 17 seconds ahead Wiki chase down what we have seen tonight you think I don't think so no I not have things under control would you go in a James Bond and speaking of Gaza they're spun down and turn four we continue to race it was close the caution flag will probably hurt her again we heard there again in Vincennes showing you the interval now but and second Walter passed through here comes Alan Kulwicki who has hung up just behind Jimmy Spencer have a yellow he's being held up right now by Jimmy yeah he's lost Brown in the last few laps he's about seven and 14 seconds behind now down Spencer moves over and Kuwait look Ricky run out on the back bumper of Ricky Rudd's Quaker State doing so we got a great race for sex and fourth position what we had a good run off the turn - he got down on the inside get mighty slick that there on the inside now second brood coming [Music] up there we've seen a couple like that the farthest assessment [Music] twenty-something years carlene's between himself and [Music] second in points the race tonight Rusty Wallace about 30 million cause it'd be sure on the inside Rusty's car just not running - fall song see if Waltrip can put a lap on him indeed he does so now there are only five cars on the lead lap at the 4500 with 462 laps types to go in the bush 500 darrell waltrip is a leader Alan Kulwicki a second Ricky Rudd third Harry Gant fourth Terry Labonte fifth those cars on the lead lap lap down at six Rusty Wallace two laps down at seven Bobby Hillin Jimmy Spencer is three laps down at eight Neil Bonnett is three laps down in ninth and Dale Jarrett four laps down in tenth position but a nice run by Jared this evening there is a leader they're all Walker they are in the hits he was another one down there is Dale going the pits I just can't wait to see the Winston Cup points after this race because they're going to be all scrambled up Darrell Waltrip the most laughs this evening here's Terry Labonte I know he's currently running in fifth place he was on Darrell Walker's bumper not long ago passing for the lead but after that's the board hasn't run as in danger of going a lap down now look at this they're the top five in Winston Cup points going into this race Dale Earnhardt fifteen Rusty Wallace second in points is sixth 20th darrell waltrip quorthon points as the leader Davey Allison 25th so as I indicated the points are really going to be scrambled at the end of this way contention for the Winston Cup when we go to Darlington next week we do the interview last week in Michigan I have to be fill out the race up this one he was and said we'll make those Championships going away deep down in his heart I was shops this week and he said hey we haven't given up yet said we're gonna try to win this thing as welcome man and so there are now five go make that cars on the lead lap as Labonte goes down one for cars cult wiki 26 and 33 cars and there they are and they they must have a rope attached nothing's changed what just 100 last not least bumper-to-bumper for the last 50 75 [Music] there's cold wiki just ahead of Rudd [Music] surpass things pretty much in hand at the moment yeah he's able to run his own race away [Music] he was second by the way was second in the spring [Music] with hair again ricky rudd rage is gone [Music] finding the wheel really have in the family still run a pretty basic the race ix three laps down [Music] short track racing in the 80s Winston Cup as 32 the second-place guy is [Music] believe it or not is the we'll be back right after this with more from Bristol International Raceway [Music] last week when Rusty Wallace won at Michigan the champion spark plug for fender he became the winningest driver of 1989 if Darrell Waltrip can win tonight he will also have five wins and Ty Wallace for then 11 laps of doing so darrell waltrip is the leader of the race and has a good leader very competently Wiki who is running in the second position ricky rudd now creeping up on ten laps to go at 90 complete I'm so glad to see ya think ten fingers which signifies just ten more laughter Hill you go around this place and about five hundred lamps now where ya 2nd place belongs to Alan Kulwicki car number seven here he comes into the screen bars just went by and they're as Rusty Wallace now is a lap down you know he was gaining on via live the pass and desperately after points 175 to win in a drop survived boys and he was getting on and so Rusty Wallace is in sixth between [Music] and just can't find the opportunity to take over the spot in the turns now he couldn't make the pass there are less than five laps to go in the second dirty are very very close there's Alan Kulwicki at 7:26 Ricky run to the 33 of hearing end on the 11 car of Terry Labonte for this position ezel app down [Music] Harry and Joe by Malecha Whitney is going to [Music] I'm sure he with in case you just joined us if the 17 car wins the race that's okay then if the seven car was to win the race he said on the phone he would think of a bonus 136,000 late [Music] of kin here comes the white flag for Darrell Waltrip he has one more around the point five three three mile high banks of Bristol International Raceway and he will win his victory of 1989 here at Bristol off of quarter number board Darrell Waltrip wins the Bush 100 here comes second place he will finish second ricky rudd to be Terry Labonte let's go to Jerry okay Jeff Hammond in the food self-rating here in the pits with Darrell off to victory in Jeff congratulations on an outstanding win partnered Thank You Man I tell you what I can't say enough about that man behind that 17 car or this punch right here we've had two bad weeks we came up here we were gonna run the wheels off or knock the wheels off that was our game plan tell him before we start the right side the tiger man was going after the night he did it he came up here with blood in his eye and I think everybody can say he's back baby we're going to dogs and we're gonna be pumped we might not get a million but we look like a million that sums it up Jeff a little too happy tide cruise over great comment and again we'll be live at 12:50 next sunday afternoon to see if Darryl Walter can repeat his win tonight and win one second dollars in the southern 500 [Music] [Applause] his way to victory lane and our speed world coverage up the bush five hundred feet brought to you by C Rex the antifreeze coolant for extreme conditions by Quaker State motor oil the McCue stands for quality always has always will by the tired battery now with more power when you need it most and by the first name in filters Purolator exceptional protection for exceptional vehicles like yours and we will go to Victory Lane in just a moment to talk with Darrell Waltrip who has endured and won the Busch 500 that in just a moment [Music] darrell waltrip wins the bush 500 our winner's circle interview being brought to you by the diehard battery now with more power when you need it most here's Jack arute well he gets the congratulations of his wife Stevie the camera right behind you there Darrell the old man is back at Bristol has a tough night just like the good Lord for a good night we've been praying and hoping that we could get back in the points race I don't know if it's make much difference or not but we're real happy and just praise the Lord I'm give out yeah I drove my heart out tonight I give it all ahead boy you did but what's even more important Darrell is the fact is he takes Jessica Lee and Stevie's arms you've got the momentum going into the Winston million you're the only man that can possibly win it next week I know it and I will that's what the night was all about well if you count momentum mom hello mom hi mom happy birthday to corley was Amy our crew member well that's the story from Victory Lane let's go back up to you Bob well he said it he's got the momentum going in and it sure is gonna be fun to watch what happens next Sunday afternoon here on ESPN I hope Alan Kulwicki is running second alright let's take a look now at the point standings these are unofficial Dale Earnhardt of course will maintain his lead but Rusty Wallace will move to within 50 points of the Winston Cup points battle Mark Martin came into this race 95 behind he leaves 102 behind Darrell Waltrip came in 200 points behind and now is only 138 so he made the huge gain in winning this race and Davey Allison will maintain his position in fifth he came in 261 points behind and now is 284 behind Dale Earnhardt so that's how close the Winston Cup points battle is and Rusty within 50 let's go to Jerry punches with second place finisher Alan Kulwicki well Alan's sitting inside the trailer gentlemen he's absolutely exhausted and as a matter of fact he had I think he had a hitter plant broken Alan he's trying to get stood up here a little bit first of all you okay all right just a little got a little nauseous with about 90 or hundred laps to go there the broke I had our hands the fumes are getting to me and I just got a little dizzy and just hanging out until the end did a heck of a job out there trying to bring bring the 0x car home in seconds well we've got a flat tire one time I got almost two laps down and made it up but just could never catch up to Darrell that was all we could do you know although that would catch his breath after a heck of an effort tonight and the last 90 laps just trying to stay awake in the car after all the fumes getting inside a heck of a job but this youngster from Wisconsin Bob well you got to take your hats off to all of the drivers who have completed this race there is Darrell Waltrip he simply can't take it anymore and as has laid down Bob Nate and I have made comments along all doing a show about the physical aspect of this racetrack and I think we looked at Cahuilla we look at Darrell Waltrip folks you know now just how tough this racetrack is but it has provided some great racing for us this evening some good competition and Darrell Waltrip has come out on top let's take a look at the top 10 finishers Alan Kulwicki of course was second Ricky Rudd third Harry Gant fourth and a lap down in fifth position was Terry Labonte finishing in sixth through tenth Rusty Wallace a lap down and sixth Bobby Hillin drove a great race and wound up in seventh two laps down Jimmy Spencer running in the top five for a great distance tonight but ended up in eighth position three laps down Neil Bonnett was ninth three laps down and Dale Jarrett a fine job four laps down finishing in the top 10 so we have what should be just an unbelievable race next weekend at Darlington the Hinds southern 500 will have it live for you at 12:50 part of race day America and Darrell Waltrip one chance 1 million dollars other race
