we are live at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina for the Heinz southern 500 a race steeped in tradition and once again thousands of spectators have turned out for this Labor Day weekend race there's a lot at stake here this afternoon Darrell Waltrip eligible for 1 million dollars we'll tell you more about that in just a moment and there is a live shot of Darrell Waltrip as he gets trapped in the race car ready to go for 1 million dollars let's go down and talk to him here is dr. Jerry punch well Bob the book on Darrell Waltrip is 78 Winston Cup wins three Winston Cup championships and a career leading over nine and a half million dollars in earnings but the two jewels missing from Darrell Waltrip scrounge on the southern 500 win and the Winston million in early to collect both of those today I know that you know it's gonna be a tough day we've done everything we can physically do humanly do it's up to the good Lord and good luck and just what happens out here on this racetrack I'd I wish the weather wasn't like this we were planning on being hot and sunny we're using the cool suit today to kind of compensate for that I thought that was gonna be an advantage for us right now you know we don't know what they anticipate so we just go run hard and and try to bring home that million dollars I believe I can do it I feel good I'm ready you've been so relaxed all week long four years ago bill oh he said he couldn't even breathe he couldn't sleep at night you've been so relaxed and poised in the garage area the crews been sort of laughing and joking but now it's all business yeah I was good until this morning I got tightened up a little bit this morning the reality of it all and the chance to run one race for $1,000,000 is just an incredible thing although the other races the rest this year are going to lead to a million dollars this is a one-shot deal here I just think tide and Rick Hendrick and my whole crew that have done a fantastic job of helping me win these races to get to this point whether we win or not we we've had I'm proud of these guys we a good year and a lot of things have happened to this team this year that I'm really thankful for proud of and I just pray we have a safe day and we'll give the credit to the Lord here's a look at the track too tough to tame it's one point three six six miles in length the poll halftime was thirty point seven oh five seconds the speed 160 point one five six miles an hour the banking is at 24 degrees we'll go 367 laughs they'll be able to go 72 75 laps before a fuel stop here's the starting lineup for today Alan Kovac he will be on the pole his fourth pole of the year in second straight ken Schrader will be outside of row number one in the Bulger's Coffee Chevrolet in row number two for this afternoon's race it'll be Mark Martin in car number six the stroll light board he won the pole here in the spring at Darlington outside of row number two will be Bill Elliott in car number nine the course board bill is from Dawsonville Georgia in row number three for this afternoon southern 500 it's Rusty Wallace from st. Louis Missouri he'll dry at the number 27 Kodiak Pontiac and then starting in sixth position will be Harry in from Taylorsville North Carolina in the skull Vanden hos will be of car number 33 going to row number four on the inside will be Jeff bodean from shemagh New York and the Levi's Garrett Chevrolet car number five outside row number four and eight position is Ricky Rudd from Chesapeake Virginia in the number 26 Waker State viewing going to the night starting position now will be Darrell Waltrip in car number 17 the tide Chevrolet eligible for 1 million dollars starting in tenth position outside of row number five will be Dale Earnhardt from Kannapolis North Carolina he's in the number three GM Goodwrench Chevrolet in row number six will be Brett Bodine from drives the motor craft or car number of 15 starting in 12th position in part number 10 Terry Cole from Spanaway Washington in the purolator Pontiac starting in 13th position will be Rick Wilson 14th is Dick Trickle into the 8th row Michael Waltrip and Sterling Marlin and as we look at the rest of the starting lineup gentlemen the tension is built in dissonance no doubt about it you know Darrell Waltrip mentioned he'd like to see the sun shining well as they're about to get the green flag the Sun is coming out some of the clouds have dissipated a little bit so he might get his wish in that respect I think this is exciting yes dick Berggren said on pit road not only in pit road guys but in the booth it is excited one race one million dollars he has odds against him no question about that but Darrell Waltrip has very confident that he can pull off the victory here this afternoon we have three in-car cameras for you this afternoon one will be with Harry Gant who won this race at least here at Darlington in the spring we have a bumper cam on his car we're looking back at Ricky Rudd and also we have an in-car camera went riding with Hut Stricklin in the hinds sponsored car this afternoon just ahead of Memphis [Music] watching him and we'll be watching Alan Kulwicki as he tries to pick up the unical challenge money will also have an in-car camera with him you see him shifting up through the gears and getting ready for start of this 500-mile race there is Alan well the weather is overcast here it has been very very hot and humid since we arrived it did rain just a little bit earlier today and it's slightly less humid the clouds remain however as Ned just told you the clouds are dissipating somewhat it looks like a great afternoon of racing let's go to dick Berggren quickly some interesting statistics Bob Jenkins in the last three races when Alan Kulwicki won the pole Darrell Waltrip won the race in Atlanta kaliki won the pole Waltrip started fourth and one Waltrip started fourth again in Charlotte when Kulwicki won the pole and Waltrip won at Bristol last week Walt have started ninth Kulwicki started on the bull Waltrip won yes where Darrell Waltrip starts today right ninth but there's one more item here and that is at the last night Alan Kulwicki signed a sponsor contract during race week was it last year you know the story there he won the race so maybe he'll do it here today to Jerry punch what's going to happen with you well a lot of statistics for Darrell Waltrip also but you mentioned Alan Kulwicki and you know the fact that four of the last five southern 500 have been won from the poll and Alan kooky says hey if I can do that today it'll be a great weekend he signed the new contract with a sponsor you'll pick up 144,000 plus the first money here so almost a quarter of a million dollars Alan would you so it could be a red-letter day history-making here in the southern 500 gallons of antifreeze that Alan Kulwicki might won for his CRX boy I get that whole show for you Bob we get more than that Davey Allison had a rather poor qualifying effort here this weekend he's starting way back in 25th position good luck for him to come up through the pack I think he has his car working much better there he is alongside of Dale Jarrett in the Hardee's Pontiac both of those drivers will make those towards the practice we're about ready to go hi southern 500 from Darlington Raceway in South Carolina is about to begin Darrell [Music] the 39 car field makes it safely through the first and second turns and now Alan Rusty Wallace has gone into second position and here as Dale Earnhardt and now and Darrell Waltrip battles side by side Harrigan is also right there in car number 33 [Music] you're inside Harry and skull band and now there's the bumper cam as we look back on Darrell Waltrip [Music] in the race I'm not creamy until late in the race he wants to keep himself as clean as possible out there not too close [Music] still in 9th position he began from night and still is Ricky Rudd is right behind him and telling us not to take it easy and watch what happens and that's exactly what he's doing at the Alan Kulwicki has the lead of the southern 500 with Rusty Wallace running in second position third is Ken Schrader's fourth is Mark Martin Bill Elliott runs fifth Jeff Bodine is six Dale Earnhardt seven Kerrigan is eight Darrell Waltrip ninth and Ricky Rudd 10 and that pop genius is a classic statement you cannot bet this racetrack beat you the first 300 raise the racetrack keeps the car at one piece and then race the race book with what you have four is complete there you can see the interval between the leader and Walter fired back at 95 just to be able to keep him inside within a quarter of a lap or maybe even a half a lamp his cars running good enough there's the leader Alan Kulwicki as he has opened up a little bit of an advantage on second place Rusty Wallace we have just begun behind southern 500 at Darlington Raceway we'll be back with more in just a moment we're seven of 367 laps completed in the hind southern 500 Alan Kulwicki as the leader Rusty Wallace second followed by Ken Schrader Mark Martin and Bill Elliott six through ten Dale Earnhardt Geoff Bodine Harry Gant Darrell Waltrip and Ricky Rudd there is Coe wiki as he comes off quarter number four about to complete lap number eight good job pretty good distance in front of Rusty Wallace who is running in second place in freighter running in third and I think that all these drivers are doing just exactly like we talked about darrell waltrip a moment ago they're basically letting the racetrack just watching the race but don't use your car up too early for watching the race here for seventh position Jeff number five and now we are riding with Harry hand who is in eighth spot at the moment the car about to go down the front straightaway here in for the first turn the pavement is a little uneven from the start/finish line down towards turn one Madhavi on the outside of the car being left there already [Music] and we won the South 500 in the spring here at Darlington and of course they want right here just yesterday av Allison started in 28th position having trouble he's picked up a new position Kars worked pretty well if it goes high into the turn so it makes the be out of that turn then comes back down to the inside that's the way that we'll see most I'll be going through that current want to do that's Bernie urban in carnivorous was buried last Wednesday and Jimmy Spencer in the number 88 car that's behind Ernie Irvan Rusty Wallace now exposed and a little bit on Alan Kulwicki yes just a Carlita to back him you know he's just done this in the last lap or two so either Rusty Wallace has found a great combination and Bill Elliott is slowing on the racetrack Dale Earnhardt just blew by him on the outside and Elliott may have a problem although it appears as if the car is running okay now but boy Dale Earnhardt just went by like a rocketship Bob out went by talk to Ernie of this morning Bill's brother and also the crew chief and the weight distribution this morning so I think that they're probably going to have to have some costume flags and do some adjusting all during the race if they're going to get that car correct fails Rumble describe starting down and the race maybe not working as perfectly as he would like for it to but he didn't find Earnhardt just moved over lady go I think then he said let me follow him for a while maybe he's better Bill Elliott back at 19 first driver to win the Winston million is now we see a battle developing for the lead as Rusty Wallace has caught Alan Kulwicki and putting pressure on him as the cars go down the backstretch Rusty in number 27 looking to walk off with a unical challenge money in the mountains of $144,000 rescue Wallis would like to leave this race as early as possible to get five bonus points that are given for any driver who leads a Winston Cup race you have trouble later on those five points in the book Alan Kulwicki has led from the drop of the green flag he's been our only leader so far but Rusty Wallace is that close to him you know a moment ago Rusty Wallace hooked up and pulled up on the back little quickie then I'm not sure that Kulwicki did run across the slower car some traffic that caused that situation just like James mcDuffie's you see there Darrell Waltrip trying to get by a red bow tie on and Rick Wilson pulled up on the back on his back bumper Darrell Waltrip has lost a position he's back brett bodine rick wilson and michael waltrip trailing him so Darrell Waltrip has dropped from his starting position of ninth back to 10 as you can see Harry other cars as much as ' and that's good smart driving whoever your racy special after abusing the same motor to win this race that he won the Daytona and [Music] and we see the red and white number 15 right behind there Walter that's Walter we've seen a shot now that the red white car behind Darrell Waltrip driven by Brett Bodine it was announced here Friday or Thursday I guess he is going to drive the Quaker State so there is a lot of pressure on darrell waltrip to win this weekend and we asked Bill Elliott who won in 85 watch your advice for Daryl all he's got to do is win a race they just plain and sample it states for itself it sounds has taken over the top spot from Alan Kulwicki on lap number 18 well he made him look pretty easy as he moved around he followed him for a while so we're the best place on the track would be to make that news and now he has picked up those five bonus points as we see car number 16 Larry Pearson going hi Morgan Shepherd going by on the inside that's Dick Trickle in car number 84 and Bobby Hillin to car number 8 up in front of them and Greg sacks is in the fifth the yellow flag is out sex has been in the wall caution is out for the first time on the hind southern 500 as Rusty Wallace gets it slowed down we're checking to see exactly what the reason is it could be be it is for debris on the racetrack caused by as you indicated Ned Greg sacks tangle with the wall they're working on the right side of the car you can see they're pounding the sheet metal out from the wheel area but he did indeed scrape the wall and debris is on the racetrack so that's the reason for our first caution in the hind southern 500 that's the infamous Darlington stripe damage to the right side of the automobile where it makes contact with the outside retaining wall dead stops coming up here come the leaders in for pit stops of the fits here comes Rusty Wallace Alan Kulwicki Mark Martin Schrader bowtie Waldrop and others in more pit stops now let's go to dick Berggren who is with Alan Kulwicki what we're gonna do we get the seven power on the bottom rusty he is going to beat everybody had the racetrack Kulwicki was thinking 42 so Waltrip and Gant and Rudd and others go back out on to the racetrack after having changed four tires but Kulwicki only too well that is an interesting strategy and here's the back path boy everybody coming in over there there's Kyle Petty and Morgan Shepherd seven cars he kept service on his car that's Dale Jarrett right in front of him getting four tires on his car Jerry punch held the collar we're looking today you know Mitch and Ellen quick the only change right side tires the reason is that most of the curves feel the left side tires are wearing so well and watch yesterday during the Bush crash a little bit saw the left side tires where I'm wearing almost they let me nothing at all and many crews on the other hand we saw Dale Jarrett back there and the Hardys punt is just a killer back there because the guys on the front straightaway get to pit first therefore they able to get their services get back on the racetrack and then the fellas opinion on the backs right away get to make sure pets have to falling behind all of this stuff yellow is out 21 laps complete in the hind southern 500 the leaderboard Dave Marcus on top Alan Kulwicki is second followed by Rusty Wallace then Bobby Hillin and Mark Martin running six through ten Jeff Bodine Dale Earnhardt Bill Elliott Darrell Waltrip and Harry Gant Alan Kulwicki grabbed the lead at the start of the event and held it until this move by Rusty Wallace when in turn three the cars go up a little bit high on the racetrack Rusty Wallace what a run he got going in turn three just simply turns the car underneath now I'm going and quickie once he gets it in once the rusty gets in that position there's nothing Alan Kulwicki can do except what he did to back off the throttle then Rusty Wallace go baby we've seen all year long that car number 27 will turn left when he needs to even when he's in the cellar take the jack man as well that goes around to the other side and to get the service on the right side now they're changing the left side to the rear when that Jack drops that's the signal for darrell waltrip to take off that's a good shot yeah one sit on that right side it looked like his eyes on 360 degree rotation or something like the hook through his head he didn't look back and forth on the right side like to get on the left but the tab one there to go pull that one when that jack goes down that's the signal for darrell waltrip to take off well twice harold kinder has given the indication of the drivers that they'll go green next time around but on both occasions he has said nope we're going to stay yellow let's go to Jerry punch who's with Rick Hendrick Rick catering says sends again a lot today or possibly lose a lot he's got three cars in the field and Rick a lot of pressure on you the winston me and obviously that's your car well you know it it's an honor to be here today to try to win a million dollars in a race and us to have an opportunity as you know it's great that it's exciting but you know I had my million dollar deal this this week when my dad came home and made it from the hospital and so we're just gonna run this thing today and I hope all three I'm do well and old Darrell if he can be up in the top ten with 20 to go I think we got off a good shot I think they do have a good shot I would like to say a little Papa Joe Henry recovering back in Charlotte we are 24 laps into 367 lap southern 500 the leader is Dave Marcus where the first caution flag of the day can Darrell Waltrip do it stay tuned we'll find out twenty four laps completed and we are about to go green but once again we'll review the top ten for you Dave Marcus who did not pit is the leader Alan Kulwicki second that Rusty Wallace Bobby Hillin and mark mark Geoff Bodine Dale Earnhardt Bill Elliott Darrell Waltrip and Harry can make up the second five cars are on the backstretch and this time around we should be going green there has been some debris on the racetrack from an incident involving Greg sacks when he scraped the wall and then a ridge fell off of a car and causing a further delay but now the Green Wave's and we are back to racing at the high with new tires don't those other cars they should be able to move around eight markers pretty easily and Rusty Wallace does Rusty Wallace passes both Alan Kulwicki and Dave Marcus in the first and second hangs on to second position but look at Alan Kulwicki in number 7 as he tries to make take the position away Wiki has second position Marcus to third and here comes Mark Martin in car number six to try to grab third from Dave what new tires make such a difference Marcus already had more than 20 laps on his tires he chose to stay out there hit this five they learn or crime to root over there but he decided that the time to make clear [Music] the inside of the racetrack Jeff Bodine has looked white on his back bumper as they head to turn number one Earnhardt picks up the fourth position and here comes Jeff Bodine as Dave Marcus slides high on the racetrack that's Bill Elliott and then Darrell Waltrip coming along they're walking past Bobby hill you can bet that Darryl's going to be very very cautious but on the other to let people take advantage of him we can see from Harry Gant scan car Daryll moved to the inside and turn number four down the front stretch Ananda turned up wrote wanna run side by side with Marcus down marking star with the hunter tire split up just a little bit damp running room - it's tough we were looking out the back I'm very against our into a park laughs boy Chevrolet to separate himself from Farkas Bobby Hillin went from forth during those pit stops but he has dropped back since then and here is Dale Earnhardt going to third position and Geoff Bodine will come along these their mark Park maybe his car's not worth might be having some slight problem I don't think it's a major problem but certain [Music] working inside of Dave Marcus for the 9th position desk it's written right behind Ruud he's going by Marcus down the back straightaway that's Rick Wilson there we go back to Dale Earnhardt and Jeff bodean Alan Kulwicki this is a race for second spot now remember the Whitney homing signal right side tires Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace took all four tires which that he'd put on four times I think you riding he right now holds on to second position but Dale Earnhardt is putting pressure on of course there's one thing different about the lm4 we can yell he has to pay those tire videos those other guys somebody else pays bills and he has indicated that with this combination next year see Rex [Music] to various teams but he says he's going to stick with it now Earnhardt moves inside and passes coal wiki and Dale Earnhardt has second let's see if Jeff Conine in the yellow and white Levi's Garrett Chevrolet his back before I think what's happening saw Mark Martin lose go when these guys are getting we're just losing a great deal of momentum and therefore the peloponnesian Rusty Wallace is the leader of the race he is quite a distance ahead of this group of cars here is rusting as he comes off the second quarter guard heart and the others a little time to get around the card number seven of Alan Kulwicki rich spent Rusty Wallace move ahead but that car is really working [Music] [Music] Rusty Wallace 53 points behind Earnhardt in the battle for the Winston Cup here is Bill Elliott in number 9 the correspond surfboard and Harry we saw Billy Elliot earlier me look back he was backing up now they made a pit stop [Music] inside and go to the left of JD McGuffey coming down the straightaway now here again battles on the outside of Billy Elliot in turn number one Chancellor again to drive me outside of Bill Elliott let's go to dick Berggren who has a report on Mark Martin here's the problem don't match anymore the cars pushing it's under steering [Music] this race was done under conditions of it's very slick they set the cars up to counteract that try to push a little bit we've got an overcast sky everybody this morning was worried about an understeer and that is exactly what's bothering his position at the moment we're watching the back of his star from Harry Ganz in car camera dick burgers on a good point that may be why Bill Elliott made all there's the leader Rusty Wallace let's go to Jerry punch for report a lot of crews are trying to decide what kind of car to bring the Darlington do you bring a Speedway car do you bring your intermediate track car do you bring these short track Carmen events how we gonna get it dinged and beaten throughout the afternoon here as you bounce off cars in fact that evening brought the tire multiple times it will bring the car certainly looking good at the moment rusty leaves behind southern 500 part of race day America here on ESPN and we'll be right back and we are now back live to Darlington South Carolina in the northeastern portion of the great state and we are watching million dollars darrell is still in tenth position he has in that spot for several lapsim just playing it cool he made a move up and he dropped back to company position he was at hate the little while ago recovering I'm sure very concerned and look they all Earnhardt has gained considerably on Rusty Wallace meanwhile those two cars have checked away the Geoff Bodine who is running third coupla cops made pit stops while we were away for the empty car start there Ernie Irvan both of those drivers make an unscheduled pit stop speed car the bullseye barbecue stock are about to come in for an unscheduled pit stop so watching first and second their second place suit of rusty wallace the leader of the hind southern 500 [Music] if you see they'll learn are down to first if we can just keep on these guys these two cars watcher Walter he goes up outside of a painting wall big Burke and what's going on with Darrell walking tires if it's going on with a lot of people here and that is that they don't have the tire situation quite figured out for the racetrack Waltrip is pushing a little bit and believe it or not so is the leader Rusty Wallace on the other hand boat on his crew says he's got exactly the opposite problem he's just the beginning of the race and they're really setting up for the end of the race trying to figure this thing out and then try and different live they can play around with the wedge bolts a long ways to go here and nobody has thoroughly has Jerry punch what do you hear at your individual Dale Earnhardt is running a new folks at home can see the cars little bit tight yet they can't quite get the car turn I just talked to Richard Childress and said that they had the car set up racetrack well it's about 20 degrees cooler than it was yesterday groovey pi to the car I don't have far to go to smack the wall on the king all right thank you gentlemen for the reports from the pit area we continue to watch Dale Earnhardt close in on Rusty Wallace and he's now within just a couple or three car lengths well Dale Earnhardt would like to lead this race to to get those five Western points that we talked about [Music] leaving and look how fast maybe pointed out he just wanders maybe doesn't even for good run off the turn it's a tremendous momentum to go down the back straightaway and make them a great deal of time watch you've just closed in a lost one in turn three he's now within just a couple of car lengths behind president Wallace now Wallace is on the high groove the third and fourth turns as we continue to keep the progress of Waltrip and he may be slowing down Sterling Marlin goes around on the outside now he picks it back up I think he just moved over let's go early Walter Wallen running pretty close so he's bluffing for several laps Chardin abraded 3 directly behind him as the green car as far as position is concerned now the car number 83 plate speed goes by here comes Ricky Rudd down on the inside Darrell not fighting come in a spinny phone down earlier that car not handling quite as good as it was earlier that ab3 car that we mentioned that's commitment today by rodney combs Lake speed drove the car on Thursday some but turned it over to Rodney combs and he's driving the car today and doing a heck of a job then turn second a qualifying over to rakia and the baptists feet so Combs is starting that number 83 car Darrell Waltrip is now back into 13th position as Dale Earnhardt makes a bid for the lead and he just smokes Rusty Wallace he does [Music] turn four almost identically the same way Dale Earnhardt here in the battle for the Winston Cup that also of course phase 1 million from Rusty Wallace who was second in Winston Cup points at the moment so we have a great southern 500 here for you at Darlington Raceway on race day America and we'll be right back behind southern 500 where Dale Earnhardt has the lead over Rusty Wallace Alan Kulwicki third Harry Gant fourth and Mark Martin fifth that's 57 of 367 laps completed and there they are the first two Earnhardt in number three I started to say hurt Wallace has picked up the line that Burkhart was using and maybe that's allowed him to pick up a little bit of speed all right back in 12th position now is Darrell Waltrip he has dropped from ninth where he was running a few laps ago let's just go to dick Berggren who's with Jeff Hammond who's also a crew chief and a cameraman right here you can see that little crew can that he's wearing on there Jeff you guys are backing up a bit what's the problem set of tires we got on the car presently the front is slide real bad we can't get any front grip for the front tires make the car turn to metal robbed their dog because if you can't get the car to turn you gotta wait on the throttle you pick it back up to get down the straightaways and really slows you down here for caution so we can work on the car and change the set of tires well this is Darlington they can cut into caution there are a lot of in this racetrack normally there are however we have only had one so far in the first 60 laps of this 367 lap event Rusty Wallace looking to the inside of Dale Earnhardt there as they passed a slower car but Wallace holds back into second position I think Mitch right I think rusty with Bernard he was moved up into that to look Mark Martin going back a wiki takes a spot away that is for fourth position as Mark Martin has gone into fourth were watching from Alan Koh wiki's car the pole-sitter for this race [Music] is approaching from behind desire him Malik Mark Martin coition holding took on two tires here in the Lt pit stop they made it so far he took on right-side tires [Music] quite a bit looks like Palicki would have been better off the first 15 or 20 laps maybe two had the left side but see maybe he was just trying to figure out to do something Wiki v the leading rookies and hinder Dick Trickle has just been in for another unscheduled the racetrack got these two mobile brothers arrived back in the early part of the year when Mike Alexander and trickle what made this week so absolutely drive a car for the rest of the year now we again see Rusty Wallace putting a great deal of pressure on Dale Earnhardt tried to take the way that he lead from him there in the second term but could not get the job done laughs you saw just a second ago there that the car that Wallis have just passed was Richard Petty he is in 29th position areas that's driven today by Joe Ruttman who has been driving the lead off this is a car that he's had to race one other time this year trying to hear the darlin also Dave Marcus a blue car the live boy Chevrolet being passed by both Barnard and wallets Earnhardt the black number three examples of powers remember not too long ago at the restart of this race Dave Marcus was leading this race he did not pick a pit stop but now he has gone a lap down all the way back to 27 and in second position and we are live at Darlington Raceway for race day America and the hi southern 500 we'll be back with more live coverage after this Harry can't leads the hinds southern 500 here at Darlington Raceway with Rusty Wallace running second bill le in his third Mark Martin fourth and Geoff Bodine fifth and will reach the halfway point next time around and there is Gann lapping Rodney combs in car number 83 now running in second position is Rusty Wallace Harkness doesn't seem to be working no he's not running as good as he was earlier in the race Bob in fact he's about nine and a half seconds behind we get the halfway mark and dr. Jerry punch go beneath the hood of the car they have an upper heating problem they have a hose in there [Music] in the apartment over Walker car we are cold so tough break for two people whose foot go to another race as tenth place Alan Kulwicki comes in sits publicly in this car as the crew works on the overheated engine I think Darrell Waltrip did exactly one thing he did a little bit ago I think he run into the quarter panel in all the time because I see some damage on the right side of the tide shiverman yes waltrip we'll see if there is any evidence of that smoke now [Music] definitely having a struggle this afternoon 13th the lap down as he comes by here will there is crew is standing by waiting for you you're driving the car how does it feel there they're looking to see if he's coming off the herring for down dick what are you hear down there the crew chief and he says they're not going to bring it in right away since it's not that bad they're going to let it go so Waltrip continues to rotate out there and I'm going to tell you when that thing first happens there's mouse in this picture - absolutely right now well he doesn't seem to be running much he was a few laps ago before it happened but not to speed is still there okay miss long for the jr. Johnson crew meanwhile here is Harry Gann in car number 33 who is the leader of the southern 500 from Darlington Raceway it's in the pitch and the motor is dead on that upper wheel at this point it does not appear to be running at all there it is now he's got it fired up again they're looking underneath the car well the crowd releasing dancing motions Marbury said that Darrell Walker has had to come in for that schedule of that incident he's running right in front of brett bodine and you can see him slipping closer and closer up to the wall and there he goes into it and he almost spun the car as he come off the wall we see a lot of smoke on left rear yes just not go in the way that darrell waltrip found to collapse down there's a lot of smoke coming from the car when he hit the ball he's not the left are thrumming they didn't look at that side Nick Berg and what do they know the tire that took up the cars and that means that he's hit the wall very hard Waltrip screws going to bring him in again you're watching a million dollars go away but here comes Waltrip and here comes Wallace just ahead of him so Rusty Wallace our second place car is in for pit stop on lap number 194 the same time as Darrell Waltrip Waltrip esteridge great Rusty Wallace they're men and the let's try it out Waltrip's car must be severely first on the racetrack until they get hold to the backstretch and grab the end of the traffic and both other news reports stay down there three laps down here's Harrigan our leader continuing around the racetrack Jerry punch did you have any learn something about her again well the crew is scrambling around here they have to fire the for the wall he actually could go to about lap to 10 according to fuel mileage but still be from the left rear of the car Chevrolet maybe I think you're on I think we hit the wall and career is over looks like tire smoke coming from the left side of the car now is this going to be something that will take a while to fix yes they think you simply can't beat the sheet and adjust the bar on the rear of the racecar and we'll show you we have a track back later on where you can move that rear end back and forth [Music] valiant effort but just not gonna be today struggling here in the middle stages of [Music] at 199 laughs next time.bye it'll be two hundred they'll be 167 ago and there is the leader of the race Harry in very strong in second position now is Bill Elliott and here comes Dan in for a pit stop so the leader is on his way to pit road and Jerry punch will have this stop by here again possibly changing right-side tires with let's call the bill now charlie come back in 21 seconds for hair again well they're working on the left rear they really need to work on the left the damage here under trying to squared away but Benny persons the question I have right charge will be awfully hard to drive dick burgers because Lisa happy we see in putting this and Jeff codon is riding in front of Darrell Walter making his pit stop for four tires they're still working on the Walter card Dilbert there he's finally back away - Henry cars we'll see if they correct that problem pit stops are being made here at the high in southern ken schrader is an Jerry punch report well they've already changed right-side tires on the fogers Chevrolet building the way the Motors Chevrolet hips him coming off your bubble bank still a market leader Schrader moves back out you can see that Waltrip's car is in the area and there is the new leader Dale Earnhardt in car number three and there Hugh's been there but they're ready for him in the bits because I'll tell you what these guys in the that they are getting a workout she goes there's so much action on pit road Earnhardt's car little bit squirrely there in the first and second turns he keeps the car though now he dives off the banking and here comes Earnhardt in for a stop Jerry punch will report as Dale gets down pit road for you 50 smell against the car stop Lillian the left side of the car name is fist-pumping Jack to pull you out of the left side away now Jerry punch here's a million-dollar tire you can see where the tire has been rubbed away this is off darrell waltrip scar they just took this one off they put another tire around they ran a few left they just had to give it and take that one off too because they are still rubbing away at the right rear collector tires on Darrell Waltrip scar certainly is a disappointment he has gone down laps he is virtually out of it for the chance to win that million dollars today so Bill Elliott will still be the only driver to have won the Winston million he did it in 85 Darrell could have done it today but it appears as if he will the lead is now in the hands once again of arrogant as we are live on race day America at the hinds southern 500 [Music] right now we go back to the Heinz southern 500 in Darlington South Carolina and Harry Gant still leading the race but just a moment ago Bob Jenkins he got into the wall once again we saw him get into the bowl a bit earlier let's watch him again as he goes into turn 1 maybe he just gets in there too high again and he hits it even harder this time then he did a little bit ago some pretty serious damage that time as we see the concrete fly as Harry Gant goes along the wall now Mark Martin who was running right behind him got 5 and got back to the lead lap Park had gone a lap down on a pit stop but Harry Gant still leading out there but there's Mark Clark right in front of him and darrell waltrip is to have policy back out on the racetrack you know we overheard a radio conversation just a moment ago between Jim Hammond and Darrell Waltrip and I give a million dollars that is problem fixed narrow Waldron goes for the million but he's not gonna make it on this Sunday afternoon at Darlington South Carolina we'll be back right after this [Music] hope you're enjoying race to America as much as we are bringing it to you here at the Heinz southern 500 it's Harry who has one of the crew members sent back to the hate but they can't lose the wall to turn it chuckles we know that but we're bouncing off the wall let's go up pit road to dick Berggren Jerry punch I'm in Rusty Wallace pit the bear watching very very carefully a few laps ago they picked up a piece of plastic [Music] temperature gauge we gotta fix it you can see it comes out the front straightaway looks like a little bit of plastic on the right side of the griddle Jeff bird looked in the wind of our booth a moment ago Jeff bird one of the representatives of r.j. Reynolds the Winstone friend who was going to get there we see on the right side of the grill who's going to give with a million dollar prize in there Walter picking my wife's name 1 million we'd like to remind you that as part of race day America the Indy cars are running at the Red Roof Inn 200 at mid-ohio sports car course now that you'll see that race in its entirety beginning at five o'clock Eastern Time this afternoon after the conclusion of our race so the entire Indy car race at five o'clock Eastern Time part of race day America on ESPN here's our later counters with the wall is still out there Ned does this remind remind old Harry gets in the world card that time hopefully hard in the wall in turn one once again Darrell Waltrip going very slow in the tide Chevrolet there's Harry and he got in the wall extremely hard that time listen he's going to come in the bedroom for yesterday yeah he's going to come in I believe maybe not I thought he was slowing down no he stays up high on the banking does not command that he did take quite a lick and darrell waltrip is well let's give all a second there nine cards lead lap let's watch it again as Harry goes into turn one what penny Parsons was talking about it maybe he just slips up and slammed right into the wall I think all those black box up there his I'm sorry that does this remind you of Darlington a few years ago that guardrail we have a caution on the track yellow flag is out there is oil apparently spinning over in turn number two is Larry Milton he may have hit that oil that was the reason why the caution flag was being waved at the starters stand by Harold kinder Larry Pearson rookie candidate gets the Chattanooga Choo Machine back into the right direction but the yellow flag does come out for only the third time this afternoon in 226 laps someday this will be a welcome caution period for a lot of drivers because they made some adjustments on some of those race cars as they were slipping and sliding around and certainly for Harry Gant and here's the tail end of Larry Pearson's spin down to the apron of the racetrack in turn 2 Larry has had a lot of problems here has been in and out the PS he's had an overheating problem with the Chattanooga chief Buick he has run well but he has made several unscheduled pit stops here's Harry Gant the leader and you can bet your bottom dollar that you'll be coming into the pits we have a replay from the in-car camera of Gant into the fence now watch this boat oh boy get it harder what he had it harder than I thought he did it he's a strong individual here comes here comes can now in for the pit stop and just about everybody else will come in the night him Jerry punch will report on Jerry's pit stop this is the break for Harrigan and we're getting ready to bring him in anyway and check the car so it will be in late these stops are going to take the tow in after they changes tires now the crews go to work Charlie place they put the jack place the right side of the car Andy Petree over on the right side Leo Jackson the car litter now we'll check and beat out some of the sheet metal over there they're wheeling a sledgehammer trying to make the Cheeseman that let's go particular rusty Walters fit the dick Berggren that piece of plastic from the front of the car Jack managed already done the right side now they get ready to do the left side a four-tire change again they have beaten sheetmetal always check back in with dick Berggren dick what a drag race down the straightaway here to get out of the pinch you know from our camera they're in the pit area the left side of that number 33 car appears to be unscathed but you can hardly see the number on the right side Gann has been in the fence so many times here are the top 10 with 230 of 367 laps completed in the Hinds southern 500 Harry Gant the leader rusty want a second Geoff Bodine runs third Bill Elliott fourth and Dale Earnhardt his fifth in six position is Ken Schrader Mark Martin runs seventh Ricky Rudd is an eighth Bobby Hill a ninth and in tenth position is Sterling Marlin there are nine cars on the lead lap and we are still under caution because of oil on the racetrack and a spin over in turn 2 involving Larry Pearson there is Harry Gant the leader and here is Darrell Waltrip is catching up with the field after having has pretty much now see his chances of winning there is here again well and you can see now the the left side appears to be okay but look at the right side he's worn that right side out that's the way you used to do them here baby you're right that many years ago before they changed the track and turns three and four you just literally ran right up next to the guardrail if you didn't wear your car out and look about like that he was not getting around this racetrack at a very good speed but that's all supposed to have changed over the years but Harry can't apparently didn't tell you Rusty Wallace did beat Harry Gant out of the pit so rusty is going to be the leader when we go back to green at the southern 500 that will be in just a moment NASCAR racing today at the southern 500 in Darlington traditional races here are the top five with just about 70 more laps to go its Earnhardt leading with Rusty Wallace second Ricky Rudd is running third Geoff Bodine is fourth and Harry Gant running in fifth position and there is the leader Dale Earnhardt as he is on his way to a victory here in Darlington this afternoon now Darrell Waltrip who came into this race with a chance million dollars will not win that this afternoon as he is about seven laps down to the field ernhardt when new tires running bird and I stay out there let's take a look at a pitstop summary and how everybody did during this most recent set of pit stops as we have a caution flag on the Speedway Wallace came in first out second Earnhardt second to first Rudd stayed the same Gant gained a loss to position and Schrader lost two positions the caution is coming out it's not because of an accident at least as we can see perhaps just some debris on the racetrack but nevertheless our fourth caution period of the afternoon as Harold kinder displays it and we see some more pit stops now they just completed some pit stops but they have to have one more do they not before the end of this race yes they'll have to have one more for gas at least and they might be able to go from here although but when they made their pit stops a little while ago they would not have been able to go the rest of the way so now they probably come in and will be able to go the rest of the way Jerry punch they probably have no more than around 60 or 62 laps on tires all day long they would have to go 60 67 laps to completion of the race they can make it about 60 on on tires but they could go actually 70 laps on gas gain momentum coming out of the pits but is going to have to fall in behind Rusty Wallace as rusty wins the battle out of the pit area by the way the reason for the caution number 71 Dave Marcus had some contact with the wall in the backstretch nothing serious but it was enough to cause another caution period so the field is going to realign behind the pace car and we'll be back with hopefully a restart of His Highness southern 500 now we go back to the southern 500 in Darlington South Carolina Annette and Harry Gant has made several pit stops here during this caution period we are still under caution here as a result of the situation with Dave Marcus on the backstretch let's go to the pits and what is going on with Harry dance card dick Berggren adjust from the front end and trying to get the thing towed in towed out correctly now ordinarily a sixteenth of an inch and the reason that rusty just came in was earlier their crew told me they could not go 67 laps I was unlatched 300 when they fueled up last time now it's 304 now he can that's all he did was top off the fuel so rusty should be see the bill Elliot also made a pit stop at sodium Ricky Ray so most of the top cars have come pop off the fuel tank the old gamble I guess maybe as far as the tyres are concerned Jerry punch has said about 60 laps is all that going to set of tires yep they're going to gamble here's Darrell Waltrip in the pits one more time and he's shot for $1,000,000 gone away Walter still working got a feel for the guy he had a shot one race 1 billion dollars thinking just one but the car trying to just run in okay folks lay down those remote controls we're going to have some commercials we may have a test [Music] 500 Rusty Wallace is in second position Geoff Bodine Jeff boat I'm sorry Karam Hut Stricklin out the back glass [Applause] look at rusty come up over Hut stricken down in turn one [Music] that Strickler moves over and let rusty cross the faster car go by nine Carson [Music] [Music] in several spots of what elinoz [Music] here's the interval between the leader Dale Earnhardt and second place Mark Martin is very close ernhardt pulls away a little bit from the second and third place car Kenny Schrader you can see him coming to the picture in the red car back there wonder where Mark Martin came from then I remembered that a bunch of cars major pit stops in three laps later just to put that other gallon fuel in there Bart Bart made jet boat on two cars 500 is best on ages 1783 looking for his first Winston Cup win he's recorded a couple of second place finishes earlier this year [Music] his Ken Schrader in car number 25 and he'd be in he knows it now unmarked and he did come back in for just a little bit of fuel and also a chassis adjustment made a slight chassis adjustment on the might be enough to get into the front we'll see it's interesting three cars are running at the top five except the one that darrell waltrip wanted to be running into top five the man had a shot at a million dollars things that still only three drivers have captured three of the four Pearson and Bill Elliott we'll be back with more right after this [Music] thank you can and we will continue to have reports from you throughout the afternoon right now we'll get to a full field summary at the end of 350 laps here in the pine southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina the leader of the event is Dale Earnhardt and he has a piece of paper on the front of his grill as we saw earlier rusty Wallace's car it doesn't look like that it would affect him that much but certainly we'll shut some air all for going into the radiator you can say the balance of the cars there there's thunder the mad cars in the lead lap Sterling Marlin Portland let's talk about Jeff bodean Oh Jeff bow down let's run inside here's a lap down in the Levi gear at Chevrolet he was running in second place when he slowed down baby he just now went a lap down to Dale Earnhardt and so his hopes have gone out the window it was like two floors of a career and you're singing and those have dropped out of competition and now we focus in on Dale Earnhardt leading the hind southern 500 they are looking for his eighty nine Winston Cup season and if he should win he will add to his points lead in Winston Cup competence hurry ahead Rusty Wallace darrell waltrip we remind you once again is about seven laps down because of many problems that he has had during this race and has no chance of winning the Winston [Music] and likewise pole-sitter Alan Kulwicki dropped out of competition earlier and so the unocal money goes up to seven thousand six hundred dollars more three dad those numbers in your head [Music] a Dale Earnhardt's car but it hasn't slowed it down it doesn't appear to be positioned over the radiator as much as Rusty's so he's still running very strong Mark Martin Dakar is running in second place he stand about the same as a matter fact earn our Mountain pool in the weight loss just a little bit meanwhile Rusty Wallace has moved up into third spot and Ken straighter back in the fourth what turned hearts if he's going as high as he had well he went into turn here's Bill Elliott they're badly for the sixth and seventh position on the lead lap [Music] at number 33 early on the race was one of the most dominant cars here but he had some contact out of the first repairs the last pit stop 57 car strictly [Music] [Music] can't make it but reading about 18 place the race wiping down Arlington South Carolina can de l'heure hold on and win behind southern 500 back at the hinds southern 500 part of race de america just 37 more laps to go in this one Dale Earnhardt leads with mark mark second Rusty Wallace third ken Schrader fourth and Ricky Rudd running in fifth position now there is the leader Dale Earnhardt but not all that far behind is the second place machine driven by Mark Clark and there you can see the interval Martin appears to be closing in let's go to dick Berggren and the crew chief on this guy Steve you had three second-place finishes in 1989 I know you want to win badly but can you win helping the overhaul Earnhardt I don't know the three cars awful staff right now rust he's coming pretty good behind us and if you look close Ricky Rudd is running awful fast what we're planning on is typically in this race it's going to get it to the end of the race we thank the three has to stop for gas if so maybe we'll win by default but we should not give them away like that we'd have to take are you sure you filled up all the way oh we're never sure but we're gonna take a heck of a shot and we're not gonna stop for fuel don't run now that's the story with the second-place car cheering what are the leaders going to do the cars chasing and they're gonna get a shot at winning it if you do what do you think we just had to see where we got it figured it all to go the limit and that's all well the tires are gonna be real close while ago you know we were we're burning the right rear up a lot of concern here is the Goodrich pits they may be able to make it on fuel remember they did not come back as did Schrader and Wallace and others Earnhardt stayed out so he will have to go at least four laps further than anyone else well that is the question at the moment will these leaders have to stop for fuel you can only think about what happened at Daytona as far as the Mark Martin car is concerned running out with about five laps to go meanwhile we have a battle here between number nine or six position and were watching that from out the back glass in the [Music] [Applause] sitting there between the two camera cars here's the hon star I will settle down it settles back behind Eliot they're running going into that at all very again he's certain over lela's gonna try to go by history and now he makes it [Music] up or down the front straightaway herring gambler to the inside [Music] the popper [Applause] continues to be Dale Earnhardt winding out to showing the interval between first and second and there is mark marks back in the runner-up spot and now Ricky would position trainer Schrager in 25 and run in 26 hey over here 25 dozen front of me but on the racetrack I just turn on he doesn't like he's been don't watch that oh my goodness how fast he comes off that second corner now Rudd will pull alongside take away the position from Ken Schrader's so what boots the forth it looks like that Ricky Rudd's car is about equal to all the rest of them washing board turn one get much higher he goes him and everyone else I'm not cured yet found him a groove up there that's better I think he has and that allows him to cut and lift when he comes off that card he goes into power it could be that at this point of the race and certainly is working for him right now because looking how far away he is pulled from Kenny Schrader there's Rusty Wallace a third place card directly in front of Ricky Rudd Ricky is going to catch him before long watch him cut limp now he comes down to the inside of the racetrack coming off there picks up a lot of time he is indeed catching Rusty Wallace for the third position Mark Martin running second Ricky Rudd closing in on Rusty Wallace for third position we'll be right back leaders when we went into this event included hard wallace mark Waltrip and Alice they are running in the race here this afternoon Earnhardt is first Wallace third Martin's second Waltrip 21st and Allison 20 so you can see the first three positions aren't going to change very much if they finish the order they're running right now now the top five with just about 22 more laps to go it's Earnhardt leading with Mark Martin's second Rusty Wallace third followed by Ricky Rudd and Ken Schrader running fifth Darrell Waltrip their Washington take a lickin on 2 million dollars today not only the million Dodge you can win for the Winston Cup Winston Cup point championship because he's taking some serious blows and they back in whoever position he's running this way meanwhile it is ricky rudd at number 27 who is still closing in on Rusty Wallace when he passed the Ken Schrader's car he was pretty far behind rusty walls but he now has running down walls running win the race today he'll have to get not Wallace in a rush he can't afford to mess around with in too many laps because and you see the problem was almost fun the car coaster beautifully that work for ricky rudd drive-by with no problem at all rusty was sideways every - he sure was [Music] blood in third woloson fourth second is Mark mark and the leader continues to be Dale Earnhardt [Music] we took over third position from Wallace Wallace get most completely sideways coming out of tune and saw what was happening took advantage of it brought up on the outside he had to have a lot of confidence that Rusty Wallace was not going to spin that car because when he made that movement outside if Wallace does spin he's going to back it into the wall and he'll catch Rudd but Fred had a lot of comfort to cars [Music] may the fascist crawling the racetrack now but I don't know that he's got enough time to kids there's mark mark a second place car brude has time to catch as we said his first Winston Cup win what do you think is the best strategy winning a race here at Darlington you know there's two ways to win these things there's you can look into him or you can go to the front and drive away and win Oh to win either way we work every week to try to make the Stroh's light Thunderbird strong enough that it can drive to the front and drive away we hadn't hadn't accomplished that but we've run good enough to win races on a lot of occasions and so we look at it from both to win the race we hope to have a fast enough car to win the race but lightning bolt speed doesn't win these races you know sometimes it does but it doesn't always so if we don't have the field by 2/10 of a second we're not to shut up about it well not only is he going for his first win but mark mark is also and points when we went in to the southern 500 now here's an interesting story Michael was stolen from a hotel last Sunday now resembles this car that's on the racetrack and many of you fans who have been at the racetrack and gone into the simulator know that it's a real experience if you see this you're asked to call the team owner Chuck rider at seven oh four three seven seven six nine nine one all cars will be kept confidential they're looking for that country time simulator that was stolen last weekend I don't know I guess you would play in it it has become a fan favorite around the country as they took it to different parts of the country vo show so the fans would give an opportunity to get inside the experience of driving a race car and Michael Waltrip by the way is two laps down position we're widening down the southern 500 here at Darlington Raceway we'll be back right after this back at the hinds southern 500 the Keystone race in ESPN's race day America this Labor Day weekend the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet number three leading and he'll have ten more laps to go when he comes down this time the question is does he have enough fuel to complete the distance historic - this car gets less fuel mileage than any car on the circuit very close situation where the Earnhardt can make it up probably all that any car out there that is a contender now can make it the only question mark is Earnhardt he has a second place belongs to Mark Martin and there he is racetrack there is between 1st and 2nd last time around round 2 at 14 seconds so they're maintaining that same speaker ernhardt still going up close to the wall when it goes into turn one a great record for Dale Earnhardt here three of the last seven races you know he's bad Ralph Earnhardt was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame at a banquet here in Florence South Carolina adjacent to Darlington the city this adjacent to darlin should say that was a great night for Dale Earnhardt and his family and Jerry cook of course also was that's baby outside by the way right at hand of Mark Martin his car is smoking just a little bit we'll follow Earnhardt down the back straightaway interval between the two and see how they compare this time Bob there will be seven laps to go for Earnhardt just about ten miles if his power will just last us only about two gallons of fuel here comes Martin shaved a couple of tents off but take the lead blast Dale runs out of fuel actually lost just a little bit that time but I think it was as a result of passing Davey Allison when he came off a Terran for so we'll check in the next time around the nine in the 33 car a battling for position that's were six that it involves Bill Elliott and Harry gang inside Harry can scarcely close to the inside of Bill Elliott on the front stretch almost as if he waited until we got back there he's coming back on the inside of here again they're side by side off turn four and they but boy do they touch side of no race drivers they were able to hang on to their camp takes over the six position Bill Elliott those 1973 [Applause] 34.7 here's the bump between Elliot and Gant but they're both out of control Harry Gant was out of control up in the middle [Music] darrell waltrip and a bad day ernhardt has already picked up five bonus points for leading the most laps and if he can win this race he will certainly put himself in a good position to win another Winston Cup he's gonna gain some points Mark Martin still about Dale Earnhardt's 1987 win here in the southern 500 came when rain stopped the distance and Dale Earnhardt is going to chalk up with number two in this great historic and traditional race check the interval again at first and the second cars has closed down down more laps to go they will get the white flag next time around and Mark Martin may be on his way to finishing second for the third time in 1989 so have several drivers Harry Gann has had a fine day Ricky Rudd Rusty Wallace Elliott Bobby Hillin has had a great run but unfortunately Darrell Waltrip did not have the white flag [Music] [Music] [Music] toward the Winston company the momentum remains a great let's go down to dick Berggren and I would richard childress he owns the car that just won this race Richard how nervous were you about fuel icky I've heard my breath I didn't think we could make it you know we knew her home it takes one two one three and we've been picking up 21 five so we knew it was right on the money a lot of the teams at the other end were wondering if you were changing two tires on some of those pit stops you were so fast how much did this crew contribute to the win well you know Dave will do a fantastic job any time you run here and do like it not get in trouble he done a great job the crew did a great job all day on panel and they're gonna hand the victory lane right now Bob Jenkins this is a very happy bunch the Hinds southern 500 at Darlington Raceway has been won by Dale Earnhardt Mark Martin second Ricky Rudd third rusty while his fourth and Ken Schrader finishes in fifth position Dale Earnhardt climbs out in a victory celebration here had the high and southern 500 and gets a big swig of Gatorade Dale partnering I know you're out of breath congratulations on an outstanding efforts afternoon good safe race is GM Goodwrench car ran good richer and a crew did a good job damn I was either prey on our team a lot of concern over the tires if possibly the tires wouldn't make it 67 laps has more and more about gas truly truly fitting as he reaches up here and gets gets tailored Nicole is his young daughter it gives her a big hugger in victory lane oh what a sweetheart they'll a family a family weekend here for you truly fitting that you would win here after your father Ralph Earnhardt was inducted into the Hall of Fame last night we remember one instant for him he was riding with us all the way I think he brought us home when I guess they all learned heart the current Winston Cup point leader will expand on that point lead today after winning the high in southern 500 now will get to the ground and get his breath he is totally exhausted and they will get some Gatorade in him and he will get a little bit of air but an outstanding effort let's go up to dick Berggren and I what Darrell Waltrip in he is absolutely surrounded with reporters you can still manage a smile somehow what got your problems started out well we wouldn't running through good there to start with and so we made a four-tire change on the green and come back you out with me right there with Harry and Dale Dale had a problem I was racing with Harry I just felt that it was I had to make my move in if I'm gonna get back in the lead lap if I'm gonna have a chance at the million I got to stay with Harry and try to get around him and get back on the lead lap and lo and behold he hit the wall in turn two and got his car all messed up and I thought gosh this is gonna work great I'm gonna be able to get around him so I was trying too hard I just was trying too hard and I got the car up high down there and turned three and four and it there's a bump down there and hit that bump and bounced himself into the wall everyone was okay I didn't lose that much time didn't tear up anything that badly a little smoke but no problem but then I was I really was trying to be hard for the condition the car was in I see the back dogs biting my thumb got it fixed and went back at them at a later date only one come right through there do the same thing again a few laps later and it hurted pretty badly welcome so well you know turn four owes me a million dollars any way you look at it well he's got a later date coming he still got a chance at a million dollars to be the Winston Cup champion Darrell Waltrip here in the pitch we're waving bye bye to everybody Bob all right thank you take care the top 10 finishers this afternoon in the hind southern 500 Earnhardt Martin Rudd Wallace and Schrader six through 10 Harry Gant Bill Elliott Bobby Hillin Morgan Shepherd and Sterling Marlin we aren't finished yet we've got a lot more activity for you on race day America we're going to conclude things here at Darlington we will be back with you though for right now the next on our schedule is them Red Roof Inns 200 from Mid Ohio Sports Car Course [Music]
