at the Olympics a long-standing partnership again at the winter games of Calgary's Olympic tradition continuing consider some American sports classics the Kentucky Derby is always held in Louisville the Indy 500 is always run in Indianapolis this Super Bowl site is always predetermined by the start of the season but the World Series is a thoroughly moveable feast and your town never knows it's coming your way until days before and if you live in the Minnesota Twin Cities of Minneapolis and st. Paul on this clear cool night the World Series has come to you to the Hubert H humphrey Metrodome and for the first time in history they played inside under a dome of Petkovic fiberglass before a crowd which has been known to make an airport runway seem tranquil by comparison settle back and enjoy the ride [Music] [Applause] ABC Sports presents the American League champion Minnesota Twins against the National League champion st. Louis Cardinals in team one of the 1987 World Series the Cardinals clinched the pennant Wednesday night in st. Louis by shutting out the Giants in the decisive seventh game of the playoffs while the twins already had their flag in hand by virtue of Monday's clinching victory over the Tigers and guiding the two teams that got here or one rookie manager and one wily crafty leader [Music] the crowd is already at fever pitch pregame warmups it's the Metrodome and it's Game one of the 1987 World Series the st. Louis Cardinals against the Minnesota Twins I'm Al Michaels welcome to Minneapolis in game number one and welcome to a very improbable matchup in this world series consider first the Minnesota Twins rarely in a net raised through the 80s the first time they've won the pennant since 1965 and remember that with a week to go in the 1986 regular season the Minnesota Twins were in last place in the American League West they eventually finished in front of Seattle and then it took them six and a half weeks to name a permanent manager it turned out to be Tom Kelley he was named in late November of 86 and he and his rookie year has led them to the promised land then there are the st. Louis Cardinals not improbable there in the series because it's the third time in six years but under the circumstances amazing tremendous adversity last year they were never in the race the same kind of adversity and an unbelievable amount of injuries in 87 but Whitey Herzog with paste and glue and tacks in the rest of it has them here you know Jack Clark is not here you know Terry Pendleton is here but he is injured in the cardinal starting line of tonight are three rookies and one veteran who hit Oh 80 it's a World Series you go figure that game one coming up here's st. Louis against Minnesota Game one let's meet the lineups and the public address announcer here at the Metrodome is Bob Casey and now let's welcome in the 1987 National except in st. Louis Cardinals against the American League to be in Minnesota Twins in Dean 1 of the 1987 World Series and this ABC Sports exclusive is being brought to you by Merrill Lynch at Merrill we believe you're worlds who don't know boundaries by Budweiser beechwood aged for that clean crisp age this Bud's for you by the heartbeat of America today's Chevrolet and by GE we bring good things to life from aircraft engines to appliances to plastics to financial services [Music] and over 54,000 filling the Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis being one of the world Furies the st. Louis Cardinals event to fill the twins I'm Al Michaels and first let's begin with the Minnesota Twins who tonight become the first team in the history of baseball to go under the World Tree having been out school during the regular season they were on scores they were hit in terms of average they were around homered the opposition had more stolen bases and they were out fixed in terms of earned run average they were out everything except at this point there are 13 teams in the American League that are out of the World Series and the Minnesota Twins are engines they turned to Tim McCarver people want to know how did the Minnesota Twins win the American League pennant well you told me to go figure it out a little while ago so I decided to do that even though the Minnesota Twins won only 85 ballgames which was by the way the lowest of the divisional championship team they took charge the latter part of August as a matter of fact from the last part of August to the last part of September they were 18 and 9 and there's just obliterated the Detroit Tigers in the American League Championship Series winning four out of five with their perfect baseball and speaking of perfection that's exactly what the Cardinals had the first half of the year there were nine and a half and try to Montreal in the Mets in the middle of July Wendell to a game and a half in early September they hung on and I guess you could say they are limp and lame but because of their pitching in there deep pitching staff five left-handers for right-handers they are I think a bit of an edge in the series so far and when he heard like able to add an extra pitcher lead tunnel jack block in effect on the disabled list and on the subject of pitching who better to tell us about that and the difference between the way these food stamps are set up than Jim Palmer a contrast in what Jimmy said one of the weakness that the Minnesota Twins has it in the depth of their starting pitching and that's something you really can't hide over a hundred and sixty two games but you can do it and playoff or a World Series the two guys that are going to rely on our fly Levin and viola viola will pitch tonight you'll see the record 45 and 28 and games they started and you can see the records of the other starters and also another thing is very important earned run average of why all my eleven about three and a half runs the rest of fishing staff about 5.5 so and the Cardinals have great depth em said I favor the twins only two goes to the injury to Terry Pendleton he had such a great year they're going to miss them offensively he might hit a little bit left Hanna but they will mrs. Kovach third and tonight in Game one in the World Series the pitching matchup a rookie against a veteran first-year man Joe McGrane against Frank viola teamed by downtown Minneapolis and Tom Knapp with a ceremonial first pitch I now ladies the gentleman throwing out the nice ceremonial first pitch to Matt and who needs no introduction to baseball fans he ranks fifth in the all-time home run list with 573 four career home runs and ranked second only to Babe Ruth among the American League sluggers he spent 22 seasons in the major league as it is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame making us the commissioners box on the first-base side that weird old Harmon Killebrew [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] number retired and the wind takes the field everybody waving their Homer a hanky did you look at the st. Louis lineup tonight the speedy Vince Coleman to leadoff in Ozzie Smith and Tommy Herr batting third Jim Lindeman rookie first baseman cleanup Willie McGee the veteran in center Tony Pina does the khaki team 7 hero Jose Oquendo is in right the designated hitter is a rookie compact naazy and Tom lawless he does the old 80 average back night defensively the Twins in the outfield Dan gladden who came over from the Giants of the spring kirby puckett and Tom Prue names he in the outfield the infield the g-men it third and short guy Eddie and gag me with Lombardo's e at second and Kanpur back the native Minnesota in the first Tim water does the catching Frank viola is on the mound and one of the features we'll have for you during the series Paul Molitor and Tony Gwynn have assessed the pickers and Molitor of the Milwaukee Brewers tells us about Frank viola Frank violas development of a changeup over the past two years has taken him from being a good pitcher to a great pitcher the one thing he has to be careful about there is he occasionally might tip his pitches holding his fastball lower in the glove as opposed to his changeup or his breaking ball which he holds higher up into the webbing the Cardinal should have some success stealing third against him but he does a very good job of holding runners on first base and there he is and he's a man who has not lost the game in this building in almost five months Frank viola well along with a great wins home record which was 56 and 25 during the regular season another two in the playoffs Frank was 11 and 3 here and this a park where they score him a lot of run Paul Molitor told us about the fact that he has an excellent changeup but he also throws about 95 miles - not 95 about 92 miles per hour has a good curveball and he said the way I am going to have to get the st. Louis Cardinals out is basically not go to an oak tree in one if they get on I'm not going to change my game he does hold runners on very well first base only six out of 15 have been able to steal on them this year a very accomplished left-handed pitcher now in postseason play six umpires and their split in the World Series three American three national as denoted on the right Dave Phillips falls the balls and strikes Lee Weyer at first read constantly at second John McSherry national third and Tiger of the American down the line and left very faded down the line in right and that of course means in a seven-game series it would be Dean Phillips again back to the plate if we go the distance so here we go Game one of the 1987 World Series and it begins with Vince Coleman Ivy Smith and Tommy Herr and the Cardinals with a lot of spectators even though Terry Pendleton is hurt and not in the lineup tonight they still have a total of five in the lineup and during the first three [Applause] [Music] and a fun viola feels low it's billed as Cardinal speed against wind power and right off the bat it's Coleman trying to bunt his way on with a good play by Biola and Hrbek a good play getting to the ball by Biola but he threw a changeup to first base and look at the scoop I can't her pit a vastly underrated fielding first faces looked like he threw that ball with three fingers a lot of times that ring finger gets involved in throwing and anybody who's throwing to a base doesn't like that takes a strike Coleman seated next to Danny Cox will be the pitcher in Game two tomorrow as a matter of fact and talking about that ring finger that's one of the things that makes violas great genes so effective it's called the circle chain and it's grown with the last three fingers of the left hand that was it I want to do another look now at her back at first base scooping it very close and Lee Weyer was the man right there to call it one out bases empty quickly to down the crowd is already frenzy another look at the change-up which makes him such an effective pitcher out on his front foot his left shoulder is already open again he has to respect the ninety mile per hour fastball doesn't have a chance so two down and not Tommy her another switch hitter there are his composite figures but as a right-handed batter her this year hit 297 as the lefty only 242 Coleman and Smith were superior from the left side her from the right side which will benefit him against viola and they'll really miss Pendleton because Harry hit 337 right hand [Music] and man who has been into world theory had never had a que affixed in his name and the scorebook until now I think you talked to all hitters and what they say is that a lot of times the pitcher especially the first time around was the first game the first at-bat have an advantage there's a chance that Ozzie Smith has never seen Frank Frank viola doesn't really know what to look for scouting report will only tell you so much most hitters want to see the guy especially maybe one or two times or one or two games that plus the fact the Cardinals are playing in a foreign ballpark in a park where there are shadows where the lighting has been a problem for some batters here's by viola the Cardinals are gone with something swings coming up Cardinals gone in order and thus the twins come up in the bottom of the first inning with this lineup gladden leading off and left Greg gagney batting second in kirby puckett Gary guy Eddie the American League Championship Series MVP is a cleanup and Don Baylor who came over from the Red Sox in August is the D H crew Nancy and write her back at first Lombardo's e at second Lauder catching by the way in the World Series they will use the designated hitter here in Minnesota not in st. Louis in the AL Park yes in the NL Park no Coleman McGee Oquendo in the outfield for the cart and then was handled and John lawless Smith her and Lindemann at first with Clark on pain yet back of the plate McGrane pitching he's a rookie and on our inside pitch Tony Quinn of the Padres batting champ talks about McGrane I had a lot of trouble hitting Joe McGrane this year he throws a fastball breaking ball changeup but his best pitch is a fastball and he sinks it he runs it in and out but I think the Minnesota Twins will have an opportunity to steal some bases against Joe even though he's left-handed he's real delivery going to the plate Wayne's assessment as the twins come up now is gladden gagney and Puckett in the bottom of the first inning at the Metrodome McGrane and it's unusual for a rookie to start in a World Series game the last time a rookie started a series opener was 1980 Bob Walker the Phillies against Kansas City one region of course is a long and extended playoff series of Whitey Herzog had his brothers and had they slept the Giants it would have been cotsworth Tudor starting probably Cox also the leg injury to rake Matthews Joe McGrane never really had a loss for words for his goodness that they must have held the lottery and they picked me an interesting year though started out by to know I went to at seven one of the last two ballgames he said the one thing he learned about pitching the playoffs against the Giants was that instead of trying to pitch through the hitters weakness he has to go with his strength that is Tony Gwynn said that's the sinker away black picks it down to Ozzie Smith and the wizard throws an eye so if Latin is out number one in the bottom of the first inning in Greg gagney will be the batter at both Tony and tall told you both pitchers are relying on the stuff that they talked about to tinker from Joe McGrane after the changeup from Frank viola and Ozzie Smith you'll see a lot of movement when he throws the ball Greg gagney a totally different shortstop when he goes to his right he plants the throw you rarely see Ozzie Smith plant and throw the ball Dagny is the plate fouling it off one thing gagney said I'm not competing with Ozzie Smith I can learn from him with the next week yeah by planning of course I mean the right foot when you go in the hole Adi is in a constant state of motion when he throws the ball when he goes to his right you'll seem almost circle the ball to his right not so with Jenkins outside woman 1 Dagny who hit two home runs during the American League Championship Series he's the kind of player who doesn't get a lot of headlines but when you watch him play on an everyday basis you begin to appreciate him more and more wanted to post though both of those home runs came on breaking balls and no doubt the advance scouts for the Cardinals saw that so really what you have is the grain strength which is the thinker running it away and occasionally coming inside against the guy that really is going to have better bat speed it's going to hit more longer balls on the slow curve ball or something off-speed one toothpick is inside you bring up an interesting point here because the way can't see hit he curls that that there's a lot of fat movement and most of the time you see that bad girl with a lot of strong six six ball hitter Mike Schmidt Willie Stargell comes to Brian I watch how he ends up that's that pearl around his head they catch up to the fastball and he becomes the grain first strikeout victim and quickly two gone here in the first and Puckett coming up and we isolate now on Dagon then when you curl with that you have Barbour to go with the bat and that's why Jim says when you throw the change-up into purple that actually speeds up the bat and allows the guy like that need to throw the ball Kirby Pucket now as popular as any of the twins great season and you saw what he did offensively defensively he took several home runs away with taxes over the fence want to go with a seven foot high outfield benching center here in Minnesota per be able to reach over a la Eric Davis and take several home runs away shopper puckett can run her has to hurry and get to so the twins are gone both teams out an order no score after one in Des Moines [Applause] here's something you'll see quite a bit there's gagney going back facing a new picture and trying to impart some information to guy Eddie it looks like gagney is telling Gary that the ball was up and a terrific play by Tommy Herr to come up with that in-between hop there is a big difference between an in-between hop and a short hop the in-between hop that that hop that it's not true and it's not short and for that reason Tommy made a good play on that however a hop like that easier to feel on the artificial surface Jim Lindeman now is the batter Lindemann not only spelling Jack Clark at first base but spelling him in the cleanup spot and there is Jack Clark in uniform but ineligible not one of the 24 live all the center's puck it's got a very late start on it and makes the catch and Lindemann goes to second and the only oddity there is that Puckett played in this ballpark all the time you would expect that to happen to maybe Willie McGee in that Furby well one point that Tim and I were talking about al before the game is is the homer hankies and here you see Puckett not able to get to it does get it with the bottom of his glove which puts eventually lend them in at second base but you have all these guys behind home plate with white handkerchiefs it's a much worse background than it has been all season so even somebody familiar and of course as Marty Spring said who head of the American League umpires here said even an umpire wants to lose the ball you're not going to find it the roof is white and the background is white the gene I'll at the plate well taking it a step further the fan knowing that they could have a whole or hankies out when the Cardinals were in the outfield and put it back in their pocket when it was a hot ticket that's the problem with the World Series a lot of times you have fans who haven't been to baseball games that office so they're going to have to learn especially if they're going to keep this home field of any one-on-one account on a litigator switch did it Willie as a right-handed batter to 88 lefty to 84 so he's pretty close to right down the middle he's always been that type of hitter coming off knee surgery started slow didn't play fill a middle of April go back to the MVP year he had when he hit 353 like 357 left-handed 354 right Hanna scope numbers aren't quite as high but and the power numbers are not the same to consider the Cardinals hat distraction floor and you know four runs man at second and nobody out and the key is nothing else at least trying to move them over again talking about the circle change Tim talked about it earlier it's thrown the last three fingers you're going to make like an okay sign what's so effective about a changeup and especially when the guy like Biola throws as hard as he does is that the arm motion looks like a fastball you swing at the arm if you slow down your arm it doesn't matter what the speed of the ball is that's in the air and maybe deep enough to advance Lindemann pocket makes the catch Lindemann tag Puckett throw by anybody had it Kirby was a strong and an accurate arm and Lindemann just does get there this is why Bernanke and Dan gladden lead the team in assists people don't normally run kirby puckett you saw that perfect example where he positioned himself very well but this throw almost fits Lindemann look at the decoy set up by Gary guy Eddie like he's waiting in a bus stop and he thought he might attack him high and if he paid contact there I'll tell you he could have been out because you could clearly see that the foot not the third John McSherry the national league umpire making the call and so now the twins play their infield back with a man at third and one out but on this astroturf on the right side halfway which could be considered really in there's a look Dagny plays a deep in anyway as being as swings and misses or you can afford to do that for two reasons your plan on the rug and on an artificial surface the ball is going to get to your quicker and plus you don't have to exceed on third baseman Jim Lindeman so a sharply hit ball to Gaffney even though he's back you may have a play at home and we saw him do that in the American League Championship Series he plays the deep in and then begins to move in on occasion and can still throw him out at the plate one-on-one [Applause] Tony Pina had a tough year he was hurt early while defending to 14 came over from Pittsburgh and at the end of the regular season started to wear glasses he had a good NLCS that made all the difference in the world that he used to come into the locker room and couldn't see across the locker room you can imagine trying to pick up a 90-mile for our basketball you saw him in this situation getting the run in 65 percent of the time the league average is 50 percent so he normally does the job [Applause] but he's also a bad ball hitter and I think it's Iola goes out of the strike zone either 2 2 or 3 2 is going to get him at least to go for a fall man he may make contact on it but it's going to be a pitch that Biola chooses as opposed to Pena viola to ensue Hill deep Lindemann close to third working for stretch one hour pretty good Rick with two strikes well he attempted to do exactly what Tim said tried to run the fastball in on them and up in the strike zone but when you're bad ball hitter you sometimes get the bat on the ball so by all makes the pitch he wants to and again Pena with the glasses is a much more confident hitter it's interesting that most bad ball hitters are --court by the very nature of the way they swing back to the contact hitter they've got to make contact otherwise you can hear in the big three into the cab tell you their scouting report I'm not much for World Series scouting report but the scouting report I think came into play with Tony Pena on those last two pitches through high fastball next hi Lindemann a third one down and the 3-2 pitch is grounded to gagney and gagging walk home and a knock to go to first so he was in that deep Ian position where he had the option but he felt the ball was just a bit too slowly hit to come home breaking on contact lindenmuth doesn't have great speed gets a good jump in right there you see gagney looking and takes the shore out again I think has a lot to do with their feeling that they have ability to score runs a lot of times you take that gamble but gaggy chose not to do that [Music] [Applause] so the Cardinals break on top one-nothing in Jose Oquendo hits a high fly ball down the line and left Ladon and gagney er both there and Latin Mass Effect's card will take the lead after one and a half one-nothing st. Louis which we talked earlier about the different styles in fielding the ball watch Dagny and remember what we said he has to plan to throw effectively had this been Ozzie Smith I think he comes home with the ball because of his style of throwing he's going toward home and he had take a chance where his dad me who's used to planning the right foot to make the throw didn't opt to take the chance and it looked like had he thrown or been able to throw on the run he had a real go got to get up close guy Eddie starts the bottom of the second with a high fly ball to right field and it's so Kendall looking up into the Teflon making the catch for the out so much made about the dome here and it's funny because most people tend to think of the Astrodome but in reality this park is probably now more similar to Montreal that Montreal has the rule than Houston well it is except that this roof is white in the roof and Montreal is orange and Billy Martin said why don't they spend a hundred thousand dollars in paint the roof maybe it's a pretty good winners job them I don't know but I mean this roof is white more difficult to see the ball at night and that's one of the objections they think that you know the astroturf is not going to bother the Cardinals they play on it most of the year and say Louis this group is wife and as you can see in that shot in your color wasn't distorted if it's aligned correctly on your set it almost thins off an orange you as Baylor hits it in the air to shallow right now Oquendo comes in a little gingerly for the moment and makes the play go down well coupled with the fact not only do you have the white group but you also have the white Homer hanging and the trim colors are red white blue I mean for the outfielders and infielders you could have blue and red Homer hanky baby for stealing a baseball to change the color of the ball like Charlie Finley one to do ten years ago sorry boom right and it was Bob Uecker who said that couldn't be done because there weren't enough disease forces brew nasty take low in the count wanted o to our faces at the bottom of the secondary Cardinals on top one to nothing do it all the guys comm Kelly what you see is what you get modest unassuming bright guy and a real good guy painted in some quarters is dull and boring not really three and oh he's a guy who loves to let his players take all of the glory and the limelight as he tries to stay out of the way now guy Eddie sorry about Gary guy Eddie says just the opposite he involves everybody blaze most of his roster maybe not the playoffs in the World Series every three or four days to keep the guys interested and ready we're Tom Kelly physically thinks that I guess I fooled him three you know time was called the plane on fire Dave Phillips was sending Tim Berbick back to the on deck circle her back was trying to cheat over closer to home plate to get a better look at the grain and that call for did not pan comes out of the surface he is very patient two down and the reason for that if you can tell the more you're behind home plate the more you can tell about a picture and the very fact that the twin unless they say from the brain at Orlando we are st. Petersburg the two towns in which the twins and Cardinals crane respectively these hitters did not face these pitches and you want every edge you can get so the Cardinals ahead one nothing the crab waving the Homer hanky 14th purpose strike stamp would normally hit higher in the order but lefty against Lefty and he's dropped down to seven its fourth against right-handers and you saw the 34 home run what changes is Joe McGrane on the mound of those 34 home runs 28 against right-handers only six against left-hander we take a lot of the power away when you throw a left-hander in Kent Hrbek one in one account her back a long way through nasty guy Yeti and buckets for what some call the fabulous floor here guys who have been here a while and have been through some lean time so it's World Series come on interesting point to bring up police from a pissy first x4 perspective it the fact is you're going to face eight right handers and all of a sudden they throw one left-hander in there so this is what Paul excuse me tony gwynn talk about tough to hit but if you do get on one of his problems is he's Paul six six a long time to get rid of the ball but also when he throws the first base he telegraphed it he stands upright he kind of falls backwards instead of rolling his right shoulder and giving me the base runner of exceptive look another problem is he throws the ball to first base a little bit too softly so a lot of runners in the National League have just taken off and try to beat the throw to second base through Nancy who's really no slouch on the base pads 11 field this year their runner at first and the count of three and two for the odds-on running on a 2 2 count with two outs is really not good because it's the ball with the ball and the count is 3 and 2 and the runner is going to be running anyway good play by Pena balls that are in the dirt that are breaking balls they're easier balls to handle because all pitchers and kids the pace of breaking ball of the dirt that was a fastball and Jewellery when a kitchen can come up within us to pause it quick man has got to be quicker to come up the past moment we stopped Korean to the Bernanke will be running he's off and the pics of her back is fouled away what a difference of 3 into count makes versus trying to get to hit her out earlier in the count as you said where Nancy will be often score on a long single most definitely with better than average speed will score in the double so a lot of times a difference between giving a run up with two out sometimes is not where the ball is headed bring it to playing normals at the first and it calls for ring relay around second buddy hole there for your war walking for Nancy and her back will to down at NIMH Lombardo's he comes up [Applause] McGrane walked a little over three of all games this year 50 Tony Pena missing at 3 to fish where he handled these due to bit but McGrane a very unusual picture he tied for the national league lead in hit batsman god with kevin grows to the phillies he hits in he committed 7 bar so joe while he's got a fine young arm doesn't do a lot of things to help himself and with two out and nobody on he's just walked two in a row and now he goes to work on Lombardo's e whose average is not particularly high in his two 30-acre in the regular season but he has been a pretty tough hitter in the clutch and against lefties in particular as you can see they consumed him a lot of the year with a lumen you can see why Newman has not hit very well left-handed but he's playing against water right-handed pitcher Bordeaux Z tried to hit the ball back up the middle worked with Walt Hriniak batting his truck brought us average up about this now Mike for the Cardinal victory goes goes to the mound after McGrane had set down the first five he's walked two and work out there dealing and things mechanical and you often do that with young pitchers they have not mastered the art of pitching yet they are working with their god-given talent and that is God gave him a good arm but as far as the how to work a ball game growing strike two out nobody on he ends up walking Bernanke and Ken her back her back the only left-handed hitter in the lineup when did you ever make this grand vision you're going to wait a day ever but they look a lot of years and what you try to I think if the pitching coaches say listen we have a great arm and one of the problems is that his arm is so live at the ball moved so much let the ball go the middle of play dinner outside at least you unafraid for the middle to an all Pina stick grow close play the back runner her back getting in tell you there are two catchers in the national league who throw from their knees it makes an ex catchers think that maybe I did something wrong during my career I threw standing up and could throw it as hard as hanyan Benito Santiago with San Diego from their knees I mean Peng has been doing that - 10 years - it's amazing - velocity he gets on those throw from his knees - and OH on Lombardo's e in there farts lead one to nothing hot glue seconded and getting a good view in the metro dollar more than 54,000 look on two on two out and two and one on Lombard OC [Applause] tsuzuku the amazing lon Whitey Herzog look at Phineas target right in the middle ball just kind of sales in again at that live fastball 106 one old sale sometimes it gets you in trouble though we've seen that with a few walk and now it's flow and that means the runners will be going Korean through two down at the Bernanke taking off from second he acknowledges with clinic saying it's Korean - and Kent Hrbek away to his latest birth Whitey Herzog locking his team in a little story for the first time in the last [Applause] understand animal threw the ball over the plate very frustrated make field instead of on your toes [Applause] popped up and Lindemann says he'll take care of it and he makes the catch in fair territory plain squander a threat one looking cards after two will return after this word from your local station [Applause] [Music] [Applause] third inning at the Metrodome and some advice from Roark to McGrane well I've always felt like it pitching coach is like having a stepfather right in the dugout and he's always there to help you patients I know that the pitching coaches I had Harry for team George Bamberger Ray Miller pitching staff a run through the wall for him because they're always there when you need them and I'm sure what he's trying to tell him has just settled down giving him some mechanical help as you said al and he got out of the inning one wants to really minimize the amount of pitches he throws now compact Ozzie a rookie fouls it away Hank I see because of the actions of Terry Pendleton they have lawless playing third and Lindemann of course those far and you need a designated hitter in the World Series and so here is pack naazy the number three catcher rounding it to third fair ball Diana one up and one down here in the third inning the g-man they call them here in the twin city we call it the Gold Glove man to watch how he makes the play and kind of dodges the bag and pushes off that right foot to make the play good play by Gary guy Eddie who should when his second Gold Glove this year it's amazing what what kind of attention you'll get we hit 30 home runs you've always been an outstanding fielder but all of a sudden you put those great off that I numbers up there and people not only can he hit he can feel he does both very well that's how flawless make the strike Wallace selling Pendleton and there is Serena Terry of course Curt pulled a rib muscle on the bases against San Francisco the other night he can what he can do is he can bat left-handed period he can't hit right-handed and he can't play third base so he will be the designated hitter tomorrow night [Music] want to do hey that was quite appropriate to go to Terry Pendleton - because a lot of people who follow the National Lake think he's the best fielding third baseman in the National League now and at the point that you took Jim not until your offense catches up to your defense you get the proper recognition and he has had his career year batting average went up to 296 we walked one up home runs went up RBIs went up 96 RBIs so to miss him and it I guess contrast it's 85 when Bowman was out all alone you're really missing one of the key players lawful Jack Clark Wallace who is up only 25 times in the regular year and had two hits and then had two more hits in the playoffs become strikeout victim number two when I was talking to Tom Kelly the manager of the twins he's what's the difference between Frank viola this year 17 and 10 with a 290 RA last year I won 18 games but an ER a of about four and a half runs a game he said it's the amount of pitches to the contrast between Biola and McGrane tonight is that Biola used to get into the fifth or sixth any half 90 pitches now he minimizes his pitches and the brain has been throwing at least 25 pitches an inning so far oh and a lot on Coleman for Vince Coleman he is the fellow who was run over by the errant carpet Busch Stadium in the playoffs in 1985 and that cost him a chance to play in the World Series he had to sit and watch dusted impact player races on base percentage goal 109 bases only thrown out 22 times so when he gets on first it's almost a double maybe not against why Ola because he has the good move but just about every other pitcher sometimes a triple because he is soul and second and third a numerous occasions this year one ball two strikes the count Coleman grounded out in the first inning biola one Minnesota nothing the Metrodome in Minneapolis Al Michaels along with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver team one of the 1987 World Series the twins as you can see here Tim Laden or catching 18 games over 500 with the backup catcher South you Tara well games under 500 which is one reason when you look at Lautner's average for the year that he is in the lineup one name he won but he's a dangerous if the second thing is a dangerous 191 hitter you're looking at him 16 homers strike no more dangerous dangerous and in the American League Championship Series he got one hit against Detroit it was a game-winning double and game 2 against Jack Morris and you know that set is not really a knock at Sal Butera because now was greatest to the twins actually picked up after relief from the Cincinnati Reds in the early part of June and it points out that a pitching staff has to get used to pitching to one catcher not two or three you rarely see pitching staff successful Jim when they have to work with two or three catchers so a manager would be left half the platoon attaches and other positions no balls two strikes two got on Tim laaser leading off in the bottom of the third what it do one of the hipsters Lauder got in the playoffs were on breaking balls he is very much like Greg gagney except more powerful he is a better breaking hit I would I call a slider speed bat in other words if you throw him a slider that's usually about eight or nine miles per hour slower than a fastball he catches up but you can throw the fastball right by over inside part of the plate outside that's hence the 191 batting average Lee Weyer says no swing not even quote the lady shook his head do it and it wasn't even close yes Lisa Oh bother me they have a look at except that's the catcher's duty he wants to get every out he can and pen Jesus is take tickets Jim maybe you'll go for it tsuzuku Lauder leading off in the bottom of the third and gladden and gaggy Bart moves on top one to nothing full count from the grain making a tough on itself after he has set down the first five tonight he walked to the two-and-oh on la Pardo's II and then got him now he's gone from Owen 2 to 3 into unlocked and illusion a lot of pitching has to do with taste and rhythm and that is the fourth three to count in a row run by Joe McGrane even when he got Lombardo's it was a 3-2 count the clock up to end the inning Dan gladden out the twins and you're wondering maybe why they were able to do it in one season go from next to last the first gift weird and of course a tremendous acquisition Kelly and also Dean Blatt new grounds this one the third Wallace goes down to her and that's all they're going to get that's the forest so gladden who has good speed and led the team in steals this year with a total of 25 is it first base with one out always an amazing game you walk three out of four hitters in the pitcher swing to the Tuesday hitter swings at the first pitch and a curveball pretty good one is that Wallace those worries going to get it out her nose there's no chance for a double play glad we could run well I'll tell you there are two schools of thought to that particular theory and I know what you're saying if he's going to if he's going to get while or if he got while let him say while the other side of the coin is that he is so wild that he's going to put a pitch with not as much on it right down the middle of the plate and you got a kid to get on a cheap one unfortunately for black that was the cutest quality fish Jackie now is black build on by Lindemann she set out 25 stolen bases 18 out of 20 one successful steals against the grain perfect perfect opportunity for the twins to run very aggressive an American League playoffs I think they shocked Detroit not just the catchers he throws pretty well for enjoyed that they ran with reckless abandon any time it home runs did it all very aggressive ballclub so Lee Weyer they're kind of peek around let Lee Weyer forces national league umpire and remember in 170 inning the grain was tall for seven ball at close that is slow the rule there and I think what you're talking about it that you could not take the right leg and bring it behind the pitching rubber if you do you have to come home plate to come to home plate so what Joe is trying to do is either get right on it or or less like Steve Carlton some of these guys with a good mood and we wires over there to either call or not he has a great perspective the interesting thing you mentioned Steve proud to be from holds the national league record for Boston occasion and Steve had a similar move at Joe McGrane had Steve at eleven in 1979 and that was Joe McGrane hero when he was growing up and Steve pitch for Minnesota this year they picked him up in August and me hook up with him again in spring training next year hangs up lucky micron talk about not only does he not have a great move when he does throw the ball over he doesn't throw it with enough on it looked like he was caught in between there Jim it looked to me like he thought he had gone back too far with his right leg and threw it there birthday and threw that changeup over there almost knowing he was going to get caught I think that's what seven and aronia you ever take one what you will find that the good left-handers such as Jimmy Keefe guy we saw on the last day of the season what they do is that that you're careful you're really worried about that lake coming behind what you do is you put the knee behind the rubber Archer me and you deceive the runner that's how he gets away with it's not a clock but it's very deceptive I've never heard that before in other words me that goes by the back leg and not his foot but this is not something you expect of a rookie pitcher I saw Mike Flanagan who has one of the best moves in the American League they run on his first move they would take a gamble and they go now he worked on it is obviously your government they don't run on a Mike Flanagan you run on a Joe McGrane well all that's going on the lose sight of the situation this war is luminescing st. Louis there is one out and that gladden at first base is if you didn't know as if the brain didn't know and that's a new world series record one effect I'm making a fist [Applause] there's a scoop and it's Owen one he might he sit through this for often because he throws more strife I mean he throws over there eight straight times he's every trouble throwing strikes you'd think it'd ruin his concentration and then he throws a fastball over the plate amazing first time this is the same guy they said that used to when he was pitching in Shea Stadium would check out the aircraft to see if they were on schedule I mean he whitey physique comes to Planet seven which is one of the farthest planets away he was Airport yep got a love the way thing one-on-one well a lot has been made about the grain flakiness don't fool yourself he is an extremely intelligent felon sir his father is a college professor at Morehead State University and McGrane as portable as any rookie I can recall in years those exactly what he's saying and doing he's playing a game with the media as well one and one on a stool McGrane you remember what he was the guy earlier this year when he was a disabled if somebody says what has he been doing he said I've been reading a book JFK the man and the airport that's him these are communication or was a communications major in Arizona and it was bigger pop in the air in the tough play Kendall and her and Linda man and a cross between them so the cat is Billa ball and two strikes and gag me with one out and gladness bird one of the major distractions along with the roof are the pitching mound the warm-up mounds are on the field wall does not fall that close but you're you're a first baseman you're thinking about it second baseman has the better angle Tommy Herr o Kenda who knows if he thought I guess with all the injuries and everything that the Cardinals have had to be topical you could say they didn't want it to be a fatal distraction okay the one stupid a change is possible and Lindemann and her there and Tommy calls Linden it off and makes the catch in foul territory with a second out [Applause] dirty bucket round it out in the bottom of the first inning if you picked this up late the only run in the game the Cardinals in the second inning Jim Lindeman hit a flyball the center Kirby Pucket got a late start on it and it dropped for a double Willie McGee with a fly out long enough to move Linda min to third and it's only paying you grounded to short and Greg gagney opted to go to first base and Lindemann scored two the Cardinals scratched out Iran as they are prone to do and lead one to nothing good play good play dangit Pena's such quick hands back there a lot of times his hands are too quick and he his hands are so quick that a lot of times he he loses form when he goes after balls in the dirt usually when you see a catcher go after a ball in the dirt with his glove it's the wrong way to go about it because they want the ball to hit and then hit the test etcetera but Tony yes quick enhance which the coach rod screen crowd chanting Kirby Kirby Latin goes pixies a strike and painless those a one-hopper not in time [Music] great pots to the American League painting is here throughout only 25% of would be base dealers makes a good one hop throw but again you steal the base on the pitcher still flat a long time to figure out the grain ones got a good jump and beats the throw another look from another angle at 25 during the regular season and a big difference to the soft leather one and one on pocket good one okay I know it sounds strange but the lower the art of the ball thrown the faster it gets the second even though this ball bounces it's the perfect throw everybody has 10 things there well he bounced to throw to second that's always right there and that flattened not get head to jump off of the brain he wasn't soul of the day puck it's swinging later the back wall on ass to do [Applause] so Glavine is at second two down Rick Rennick the third-base coach and Kirby Pucket who tied for the American League lead in Hicks this year at 270 with the Royals rookie Kevin Sankar poke out by any on deck that's what Kirby has to do to be successful he has to have a good strike zone he's not a bad ball hitter like Kenya and you can hit the ball up and out over the plate that's one of his strengths but this is the guy did not hit any home runs his first year then 431 last year and then 28 this year and 332 amazing that grounded Akane her routine play and it's when done in the third the fourth we go in Game one cards one wins nothing like a vehicle from McGrane planet 7 there sits the Metrodome fronting downtown Minneapolis and inside more than 54,000 one-nothing fourth inning and Ozzie Smith leading off of the Cardinals with her and Lindemann the 2 3 and 4 hitters I be struck out in the 1st and bio look at the inside corner 1 & 1 Frank viola 117 during the regular year pass sling he wanted to check it the ground without a Lombardo's 4th inning viola has yielded this one baserunner that's a fly ball double that puckett got a late start on by Lindemann in the second meanwhile for Frank his thoughts have to be partially elsewhere his brother there is John and Donnell lick the former Donnell it now Donna viola were married earlier today at a church in East Meadow New York on Long Island Frank was to have been the best man as her bunches on the line and all we can say I'm sure the reception is winding down Frank's thoughts with his brother and sister-in-law and Donna for your sake we just hope this baby doesn't go in next grilling tonight and we understand that the date was set a year and a half ago and who would know that on that date said a year and a half ago that Frank would be pitching the first game of the World Series here in Minneapolis especially after the finish you pointed out on the opening of the twins last year one on one the cab 71 and 91 last year [Applause] make that eighty five wins and the other four in the playoffs that's that more meaningful first Frank viola pitching here tonight to me the interesting thing about the matchup between a left-hander and the Cardinals you talked about the fact that Coleman it Smith hit better from the left side they also are the two best runners so you turn him around and Biola fits very well even though he's trailing he conceivably could pitch three times so with Pendleton out bark out you have a guy that you really have to rely on one ball two strikes the count one out be 51 nothing st. Louis in the fourth it's dropping a third everybody on a hop and over to her back we come back the back the Sudan Lindemann coming up that again one of those in-between hop infielders rarely catch balls like this cleanly they'll cut short hops cleanly but the end between hops you have to smother and you really have to smother with softer hands [Applause] good play by guy at it it's kind of class time I'm not waiting for the ball to come to the net that is the definition of soft hands not the hands of rock it's wonderful just kind of push into the balls that comes in toward you and he certainly show them there any time you see an infielder going down with the glove there's dabbing at the ball the good ones come up gets it with soft hand Jim Lindeman takes a strike of a down one chummy could almost see that a collision was imminent and he just pulled up he's out anyway late swing by liniment who might be event he's the first baseman here selling mark the Cardinals right fielder of the future well he is the reason they went out and created for Tony Pena he had a great a good year last year 20 home runs good winter ball they thought it was made Andy Van Slyke expendable like the value that's hit into right field and it's been all Lindemann offensively for the Cardinals tonight Loyola has retired every other batter and Lindemann is not soon to do with Mike Young who it went over to Pittsburgh and won 13 games but Lymon had a great spring take another look the looper to Center this one he just fights off but when you have good bat speed even if you get jammed you can fight the ball off a guy with a slower bat most likely would break his back give the infielder time to get in front of that ball especially on the turf though here I mean you hit him whether or not and they hit the ball sharply have no chance at all McGee in the dirt want to know on Willie Willie McGee bothered by that risk but still 308 in the National League Championship Series and a nice running catch early in Game six which eventually wound up as the garden is one month a victory the time series catch off the bat of Jose who Rebane one Lindemann held on by her back towards a whole backhanded by gagney throws back to second no those he thought he had him he scoops it out the second base umpire Greg Kot this state he says first and second well getting he really had only one place the short hop flush the high hop there and he does all he can to throw it to Lombardo's II but Lindemann made a nice play sliding straight in tell you the day of the hook slide is gone you rarely see baserunners hooking into bases and the reason for that is you get there quicker when you go in straight in you look clearly safe to party out in the minute second base and their honor at first with two down Tony payment rounded out of a second to drive in Linden Oh and it was a fling you would think it's a lot of home run but he doesn't he is five during the regular year his tie was 15 with the Pirates a couple of years ago Tony doesn't get cheated you got to love to watch you get really kind of corkscrews himself into the ground with those points it's a high fastball Oh [Music] they don't want to become a nice and in the bat ball hitter also the type of stroke is not an uppercut stroke we hit down at the ball you hit more line drives more ground ball I'm talking to Johnny Lewis the batting instructor he said that's what we want our guys to do in Clarks not in the lineup flyballs Phillips they're out those line drives the ground ball talk about Indian painting has got that seem rubbery body that many had or has quit said we're out he's if it's been said Johnny Lewis is with Cardinal hitting instructors this year last year when they had that bad offensive year he laid low he couldn't find it I was getting all about that he said this year I work from Clark alladia 35 go to the pain yeah still nothing to do I was going to say the jury really is still out as to that trade what team was really positively affected to trade the Pittsburgh is Michael value and and events like it Mike done over there all of whom had very very good years I'd done maybe the National II quit through the year rookie pitcher the year Tony Pena though you really can't wait really what happened to him earlier in the year when he broke his stuff early April he was out for six weeks but when he came back he tried to make up for lost time and in my opinion his skills did not diminish at all this guy's still a quality session and the bottom line is the st. Louis Cardinals are in the World Series dear viola welcome for two singles the lowest one [Applause] and a wizard himself Oh Smith if you didn't know which if it was a lot of people have been staying home they should he played the major league I would have thought he'd thrown more pitches with it with me too for walks in the struggling what's made him effective Tim and this is a lot like wand berenguer who we saw pitching to play hospital Minnesota IND grounds it down the line backhanded by lawless and their birthday hairy guy Eddie gets an infield single and Don Baylor will come to the plate going back to that side of it that he doesn't throw the ball in Sicily in any spot in to watch by any guys to it excuse me while his dad to his right it he hit the ball into play that Pendleton may have made only because he has a stronger arm Wallace great great play to get to the ball but that's the difference between a Pendleton and Baylor hits it up the middle for a base head guy Eddie take this return at second as the brokens in behind it get ready for a little bit of joy to the Metrodome the mobility of wallet any utility in film did not play that like played all around does not have as strong as our so the twins were frail one monthly runners at first and second the crowd waving the Homer hanky and who Nancy Sanchez [Applause] I want to go her nasty walk in the second and he's checking with Vinick it doesn't think it is always the possibility though but what do they have sacrifice thank you no way he's funny now with the American League Championship Series that he has rips in the center for a painted in front of the he reticle hold my editor and they're loaded [Music] I'll tell you it's amazing gilma green in the second inning and bottom of the third inning ran three two count to fourth grade hitter while on four pitches the twin had the bases loaded nobody out ine gave him a look but with nobody out Rick critics held him at third and that his profit even though with two outs and a 50 you probably for a run but with nobody out you just here take the chance there was a conference at the mound Whitey Herzog lisanna he has sent five boards to the bullpen there he is three starting pitchers really a swing man that what eleven games from the Cardinal Gork now Mike war goes to the mound again that goes by guy Eddie Baylor Andrew Nancy and Alpher back coming up the left-handed batter the number seven hitter part of this is for my quark to talk to Tony Pena Joe McGrane to give for just a chance to warm up a little more and the bullpen see another couple of hits you might see a move by white meanwhile whitey he earns it he fits a piece of patio furniture and I'm cookie and Tom jelly a rookie manager first rookie manager to get to the World Series since Harvey team did it with the Brewers and he's doing Harvey took over the middle of that year Tom actually took over the latter part of Lance here he was 12 and 11 with the Swift last year and they did take some time in naming him the manager for the 87th season but Andy MacPhail obviously made the right rule the twins with a 36 year old manager and a 34 year old general manager oh and one on her back so the bases are loaded nobody out by any third baler a second and rozanski occurred for the middle crew for they said Diana four banger stores for hands he goes to third the bowl it should bounce away sacks upon the grain perfecto great presence of mind by the grain as you watch get her back they can look at what's transpiring over 30 made one of the most difficult things give up a two-run single and then cover the base you're supposed to but the grain did it at 23 not happy about the outcome but they're disabled another run Lombardo's II baked inside and a cardinal in fields back in for a second but remember ah gee throws on the run on a hard ground ball he's got a chance to throw out Bernanke at the plate well I'll tell you what the difficulty to Cardinal cab for a run I think the proper play is to pull the right side up above rompers oh he is not going to hit the ball with authority to the right side police that's the theory on which you have to go and desert going oh there's bird playing well back and Lindemann at first now you think about this a ground ball to Tommy were you get the out at first base perfect he's the third crew nasty scores and not only is it 3 2 1 but these winds have an effect Ruth another runner as far as it left you out I think relief be halfway 2 & 1 the count and especially with the type of attack the Cardinals have and with Clark knock there and Pendleton on tonight even though they are a resilient resourceful team this is a team that's going to find it very difficult to come from behind I thought it made it that much more remarkable when they came from behind against the Giants in game the playoffs or nothing at one point really Commissioner Peter Ueberroth Senator Bob Dole looking on mr. looks good that awestruck outside update and they're loaded holding a third food ante whitey Herzog's in the mouth and to the bullpen until the grains world unravels here is of course inning and Bob horse will commit beep Amy applause the ball with nobody out you're not going to take a chance so you stay a survey horse comes in with the bases-loaded nobody out [Music] a rough fourth inning for Joe McGrane also a very simple tool astroturf by Finnick ground ball broken bat hit lawless couldn't come up with it one ball hit real hard but he really had not helped himself with as well force 11 and 7 on the Air Force Recon City National League playoff was one and one and really the high a distributed but one time he could less than an inning did get anybody out three run the three hit four run something like that but other times he could extremely well he is a control pitcher they'll want making ground in the right for a base hit perfect stop the third is so loaded excreta law slider speed that slider away doesn't try to pull they just hit this the other way the great velocity of hitting tried to pull that ball no doubt hit the ball to shortstop DoublePlay ball dan gladden still nobody out in the inning five singles and a war three one twin Latin all for two on his own account perfect is a third while far dozing a second and laundering bird the gladden is a leadoff hitter and this pn what the ball game without a beef quality fish what beach is indoors [Applause] the decibel level here the metrodome so high and you watch any of the American League Championship Series you know what this crowd is capable of doing audio to block out the town what he really needed on the floor setting was a blindfold in the air down the line burrowing foul back out of play sure the Cardinals are thinking this is the team supposed to hit a 196 home runs and they're doing what we normally do five singles hitting the ball where it fits we're not running as regardless the one base to the time situation foot you can do that when you have three runs in I'll take too many chances Tom Kelly he just sits and look and win fun foul at the end of the back one and to Dan black who played with a giant through last season he came up as a centerfielder than the twins got him the giant sound of expendable in worn out his welcome in San Francisco and he really wanted a giant to beat the Cardinals he was really looking forward to going back high in the air to see flat feels cold it goes back like that [Applause] Harmon Killebrew throughout the first fall Armin Killebrew 573 career home run that's only the ninth hit by Dan gladden this year record you come in here like what you see and that's no acceptable he made a year's at 19 perfect gagging and BP was caught it wasn't and for the first time in 17 years a world 3 slam damn flat it settle down to the point where the gates in Rasul Jackie into battle Chloe won still nobody out and he's the ace handed it in the inning seven for one twin [Music] on and on the right deal - Oh Kendall pays with it for the out and at the first out of the inning is a hit around now is Puckett coming up derby is over to be wondering about some World Series grand plan a valley game last one Jim Northrup hit one in 68 I call the Joe Pepitone that's right Phil Pepitone and 6014 Boyer I called it they can go to throw two out of the last four out calls grounded to short this is right they're playing it perfectly to throw it out to down and now Eddie who started the inning with an infield single filling up another one by Kenny Boyer in the 64 series won Game four for the Cardinals to get Dowell downing no couth changeup and a grand slam home run the Cardinals 24 2 3 I tied it at two games apiece the gardens went on to winning seven they were to also hit in the 56 theory Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron and then some killer remember it was yeah the saw and why he hayward writing forward with the picture I believe one open one and one the sort of points up what we said at the top about the heroes if you never know where they'll come from Mickey Mantle hit a grand slam in the world dirty goji berries at a Grand Slam and not being in Blatt you really never know want to do we also talked about the depth of the Cardinal pitching staff before the game started I'm sure Whitey Herzog didn't want to use his pitchers in this fashion because of their depth in a 7 to 1 blowout force is a guy that has given up a lot of innings this year 33 appearances during the regular season 30 starts as we said he's a swing man that they used in the playoffs for relief that started normally during the season and white he can get more use out of him tonight and he might in the nationally part because of the designated hitter situation so actually somebody he doesn't want to do is really a godsend in the way that he doesn't have to pinch-hit for him big difference between American League Baseball international applause John will see huge if Tom Kelly on the other hand if this game gets down a reach can pick Biola's six innings if she's only going to work on three days for us the next time out high fly ball to center field and this will finally do it and McGee has lost and there's your basic electrical double the key initially looked as if he Madison had no clue holmen's was discover it diana has a double well fist goes it's up there he's it bounce he was looking at the ball all the way out but does not really see it once it gets up into the roof bill comes down and bounces so he had no clue and Miggy had no clue Baelor grounded to third Wallace goes to first and throws it below i7 one Minnesota Furniture aside no day at the beach for Whitey Herzog thus far seven to one Minnesota as we go to the fifth inning and Jose Oquendo to start things off in technology and lawless Oquendo foul to Glavine the second inning over one Frank viola leading by six and it is that a beautiful feeling precision it is and he will not deter the way pitches he started them off with a changeup no doubt Oquendo looking for a fastball doesn't get one gets another changeup this is why viola sent such a special pitcher this year we said 11 and 3 here it's hard to see the homer don't that's not actually the name of it the way it was the first year when we used to come in here very effective because you just never know what's coming it's more of our one goal the way it turned out through the course of the series we'll bring it up some times of time it was this means in a way it really produces no more home runs than your average ballpark but more runs by the way the first year was named the Homer don't only because they tried to get this stadium just don't built under budget they did not air-conditioned the fall did carry much better the first year the next year they put air conditioned and the home run still hit home runs but the twins are home run hitting ballclub they hit it just as many on there it is it's almost dead even homeruns for hunter that back at the dome and away there are a lot of ballparks especially in the American League take another look at that graphic like Seattle where there's 40% more home runs hit up at the Kingdome than there are on the road those figures over the last five years and also this year the tell-tale figure more home runs hitting twins role games and home games Dagny props it picks it up as time the way that mozzie coming up they ask Whitey Herzog about the keys for the Cardinals in winning this World Series well we're going to have to get good pitching and we're going to have to hope that we can play well here these first two games I saw the war the playoffs with Detroit I know what happened there we feel we got a little bit more of advantage we're on turf and if migraine tonight especially can just go out and pitch these ballgame let the ball fly and keep the ball in the ballpark then I think we got a chance if they start hitting the ball out on us it's going to be tough because when we get down now we know that we're going to have to be aggressive on the bases if we get some baserunners we're going to have to run we're going to have to hit and run but we're really going to have to be aggressive and we're going to we're going to stay with right now we are down by six and pag Nagi has just grounded out to viola who down and lawless coming up Thoreau Norman Herzog loves to fish loves to manage of the win he is great there is no two ways about it when you can take this team this year to the World Series you can manage really true how about the three million people that enjoy watching the Cardinals play another amazing step with the met over three million this year Cardinal Dodgers didn't do it this year I've done in the past but the Cardinals drawing over three million after a bad year last year they had a great year in 85 winning the National League pennant and then of course Kansas City beat up after they were up three games to one they won three in a row Game five in st. Louis and six and seven and Kansas City but whitey I don't think has ever faced the adversity that he States this year especially in bringing a 1 & 2 the count and you'll ask and things like it is this your most satisfying year and you really don't want to say it when you're coming right off it but I suspect down the line when whitey writes the memoirs this will have a very special chapter 87 everybody thank you so much on the other hand of the Minnesota Twins in their 85 victories if we tried to highlight in the opening remarks that they are not the same team now that they were when they compiled those 85 victories really since the last part of August they were 18 and 9 and the month of September and they lost five in significant games at the end of the year which I mean they just blew the Tigers right out of the ballpark perfect and they played with such poise and such outwards and obvious confidence they look like a team that is into the playoffs six times in the last ten years yet they've really taken on the character of their manager Tom telling it for that he deserves an awful lot of credit for a lot of other things too great sorry got he got one of those he better have got one of those I believe he was the lowest paid manager in baseball this year if not close enough Tom Kelly fencing coach Dickes such do it do [Applause] getting ahead like what they tell you from the first time you ever go to a minor league camp got a kitchen head you said if any time a game hope first it's the first batter out first pitch over [Applause] two out bases empty in the top of the fifth inning at the Metrodome where it's seven to one Minnesota time fall is three in the OP you think about viola he certainly has that graphic showed he certainly have stayed ahead tonight he has stayed ahead all year he's 17 at 10 he had a marvelous a marvelous year over the dome we can't have a blip of course so that's us right it's a pretty shot it's not a model a you know ex-german of the Chicago Tribune had a great line he said the outside of the dome looks like your grandmother's old yellow mold that does depicted grandmother's old yellow mold looks like strawberry with the lights on so amber so good we through the lawless is a little clipper foul [Applause] but staying ahead getting back to that point that you made so welcome is so important but Biola has the added ability to pitch well when he's behind in the cat because hitters just can't sit on the fan saw you put those two combinations the ability to stay ahead and when you tell the villain the ability to pitch behind it account and you've got to pitch with the quality of Frank viola great toothpicks got him like out number four an order and a four and a half seven to one Minnesota [Applause] Frank viola very much in command it's not a sneeze visit you know that's an exhale it's just that you can apply the same thing we look at Bert Blyleven on your right one bérenger on your left you lift weights you don't hold your breath the exhale same with pitching we're an antichrist the bottom of the fifth by grounding to lawless Tom gone one up and one down and you saw Blyleven and he will be on the mound and the Cardinals have opted for danny Cox they're going to come out of their playoff rotation Whitey Herzog wants John Tudor who's a tremendous success in st. Louis defense team three back in st. Louis and it will be Cox who pitched so brilliantly in the playoff clincher tomorrow night on three days rest a strike the Hrbek on one Bert Blyleven 15 game winner over 3,000 strikeout two big wins for the twins in the playoffs so he's pitched very well been thrown to give up home runs with nothing wrong with that threw a few in my day he pitched into the right ball club the Cardinals with only 94 home runs this year they only had 58 last year so for a pitcher who is thrown to give up the home run ball you don't mind or they can do a lot of other things for us to run but it would you be glad to pitch against the Cardinals as opposed to the San Francisco Giants for it they only have 205 if you take Clark with 35 in towns in our lineup with 12 that you could subtract it what happened it's f7o run three into the count on her back exactly half the platters [Applause] plus with Pendleton you lose a lot of Defense Nonaka Tom lawless doubt it but I think the biggest thing you lose 96 RBIs and her back is on so Bob force yields his first walk it's been a perfect night for her back who walks in the two-run single and she Lombardo's he comes up you know the funny thing about the twins in talking with him yesterday none of them said that he really thought he had a real good year a real great year and certainly when you looked at the figures nobody had a career year for Minnesota when things went pennants normally a bunch of guys have career years dominating pitching or something this is the ultimate team effort yes the differences soon as soon as well as you said was is Reardon 31 state that something that didn't have before so again confidence is so important in your ability to win and yet Reardon even though he had a good year and made a difference didn't have that kind of spectacular year with a reliever comes in and his 40 saves in a one-point atra Reardon had a lot of saves 31 but as er a is Corcoran Florine primarily because with the first month and a half fishing for Minnesota but if you look at all of their averages they're about right in the middle in the air deep left field and they're going to throw in that place the pendulum again another look tries to get it in as you said in Detroit last Sunday doesn't get it in and there's the result only eight home run during the course in season water hits a flyball to centerfield and Willie McGee is there for the second these Lombardo's ii with Purbeck on board that a current ball for the man to Kalambo and here's what want to know fourth inning bases-loaded first world dirty slam in 17 years nine to one Minnesota to our face is acting in the bottom of the fifth they've had a lot of first Gary guy Eddie the first player ever to hit two home run back-to-back and his first postseason game he did that against the Tigers really think that's one of the things that got him the most valuable player ruin asking the great Jerry Kappa I think what it says the two home runs off Doyle Alexander it made believers out of the prison two balls two strikes which two out of the bases empty on deck is correct acne nine runs eight hits and no errors for the quiz one run three hits and no errors for the Cardinals the twins going through the lineup for the fourth time in the game this is sitting in black dawn okay I'd like to make the point again that if the Cardinals was going to lose this game they would have preferred to have lost a relatively close game because with Frank viola one of the keys but we're going to go to twins pitching on three days rest you'll probably come back next Wednesday night in st. Louis I think Tom Kelly has the luxury of seeing viola possibly work about 70 to 75 pitches tonight getting out of their news report pen and having rest of history in the air to right field of kendo goes into the corner and makes the catch in fair territory with the twins get two more on the LOB marcozzi homer and we go to the sexes with Minnesota leading 9 to 1 [Applause] - the sex legal Al Michaels with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver Game one of the World Series in the st. Louis Cardinals trailing nine to one the Minnesota Twins winners of the ALCS in five and picking up where they left off and Detroit on Monday they've had four days of rest and they come out tonight and throw up a 9 spot gu 501 - Coleman Coleman Smith and her and you talk about taking a team out of its team the Cardinals scratching and clawing and speed forget that in there for a strike and get down by 8 what a lot there is Joe Niekro who might pick in Game four tom kelly said if they lead three games to nothing brunei SP chases this one into the corner and he owns that quarter it is a very quick e right field corner here in minneapolis brunei st knows it very very well the Cardinals in their workouts we're hitting balls into that corner so they could get used to the crazy characters first thing Jose Oquendo said is it's very tricky not only can you not see the ball when it comes off the bat it gets down into that corner he said I could have a problem Ozzie Smith hits a grounder to shortstop [Applause] select the bachlin the call screen and then right into the corner [Applause] and nobody knows that spot better than burn anchi you're not going to get a lot of caroms off of that hefty bag type of material that they have out there Tommy her now as viola delivers his 77th section the point in making such a good laws Kelly has the luxury of getting viola out of there with a huge lead and then bringing the back fresh on Wednesday you also give you a relief we talked about berenguer and Reardon you could give him an inning apiece they have not pitched since funding co-efficient that game get them acclimated to the World Series play by all to the hand of the law there are the ends of five and a half wins nine cards on the floor bottom of the sixth inning Kirby Pucket the lead things off with bond for working in long relief want to go Fermi has not joined the hit parade tonight as you see had yet to hit the ball out of the infield and that trend continues a little pop up with Lindemann fakes tariffs went away so it is gone and it will bring up Gary guy Eddie who tonight will be known as mr. Burt earth Nikoli got that back in 81 hit a homer he is those two against Detroit in Game one of the ALCS and tonight he's the persons merv rettenmund in 1971 to get to niche in an inning Italian you can add to that the first game of the 1982 season he had two home runs in this ballpark in the first game of the season and the first regular season game to be played here Yeah right Clark opening that year lawless frozen into third and Lee Weyer was ready to single out it was Eve time when Lindemann foothold and it's an airy five [Applause] another look flawless throwing on the run we've already seen it not a very strong throw from behind the bag there another throw that short option would have been tries to come up with it unable to do it Baelor now Don has flied out singled and grounded out the world series following Baylor around on with the Red Sox last year and had the Giants won it would have put Kevin Mitchell into the World Series for the second straight year go to the max in 86 [Applause] fouled away funny thing about baler they picked them up because of his persona his presence his experience and the rest but this is a ballclub it's been together a long time he didn't have hurt obviously it was good to have a baler in the clubhouse but the twins were a pretty close-knit and will mold a team to begin with he certainly certainly didn't help the twins like he helped the Boston Red Sox last year because that type of charisma to come out into surface you got to spend time with people if you really never know what's going to happen and when you look at the matchups three left-handers in the starting rotation the ph you will have a chance to maybe play a little bit not in the obviously in st. louis ballpark that's brown it's an Ivy Smith and he'll settle for the out at first base getting Baylor and moving guy Eddie down the second bernanke will be the hitter but it's nice to have somebody like Don Taylor who is there before not the player that he was last year when he had 31 home runs you take a look at ricky morton but he did hit 16 still plays the game very hearty the great example for a lot of young players which form this minnesota ballclub Fernan ski has been around a long time but there's still a little bit short an experience not in talent throughout guyana his second curve for a strike on one a lot of people were concerned about the fact that they won in five games and they were going to have five days off and Tom Kelly a firm believer at Fort part of the players ability is in legs of doing a lot of running simulated game matter of fact we talked about Gary guy Eddie is a guy that hit 31 home runs this year 34 last year go back to 1984 he only hits five and Kelly attributed to hurting his Achilles tendon it's Prince raining never getting his legs under him the one thing he wanted to have coming into this series was a well conditioned ballclub and him work out during those off days one one two Bruno is a pie we lacks into calling these guys five in nicknames occasionally if you here in Minnesota they known as Bruno and g-man and Kirby and Furby Fab Four app for wombo it's a little local color for you the center and the g-spot this one I think that makes the catch that's a hint of six it is Minnesota nine st. Louis one that's right will he freak on go back to the dugout we'll be back with anyone after this word from your local station [Applause] well we go to the seven something you know the NFL loves to talk about parody what about baseball this is the seventh different team to represent the American League in the last seven years and as a matter of fact this divisional play started the American League is one ten world or nine World Series and the National League's one nine one spirit do you believe in miracles huh they know all about miracles up here because the hockey team to which they refer so many of them team from this area they've forgotten yet yeah that's right how they wait for the clinch [Applause] seventh inning Jim Lindeman starts things off Lindemann mcgee and penis nine to one wins on top he Bartlett to muddy the president of the National League we could rip read lips he said swing the bat easy for him to say easy for a Renaissance man liner caught by Jackie yeah this has been anything but a divine comedy for a fartlek Giamatti tonight poor guy this there is the ultimate impartial observer all year long finally get to change the route this team is down by eight nine to one blow out good play by Cagney when they McGee now Oh Frank viola working on Verdi was one out of the seventh-inning Quinn's exploded for seven in the fourth highlighted by Dan gladdens grand slam and a two run homer by Lombardo's he in the fifth the key singles in the center so bully has two hits tonight and he is on it's the first hit for the Cardinal since we Dean with an infield hit in the fourth inning to further expand what you're talking about earlier tim has the luxury of Tom Kelly staying with viola or giving his bullpen an inning or so apiece it also makes it a lot easier if you're a veteran pitcher and you have command of your pitches to pitch with a nine to one lead every pitch doesn't mean the ballgame of the would and a two to one type of game or a three to two game or whatever the case is so the 84 pitches is really not a sexually low amount but he's doing without a lot of Tourette's both mentally and physically hey Mia right there is the Jeffrey r2 spirited one who will probably get the night off to the bullpen [Applause] one-on-one kind of funny if there's a downside to a blowout game tonight is if its lens of at four days off weird is going to get another day along to make it five Jim's point well-taken the last inning that maybe by getting Bear and Garrett Reardon in for an inning might be the crew thing there by resting viola but Tom Kelly that's not appear to be going in that direction that's grounded the guy Eddie open a Lombardo's he back to her dreamland under the dog [Applause] well superlative play by the Minnesota infield we saw the line drive to gagney here Kai Yeti to Lombardo's e you saw the agility the arm strength and Hrbek outstanding fielding 1st baseman with a great pickup so everybody played a part in editing and here is her back to be followed by Lombardo's Ian in Lauder in the bottom of the seventh inning nine to one Minnesota on this double play routine because of the score but look how Lombardo's he uses the bag to prevent the runner Willie McGee from taking him out there a lot of ways that second baseman can do that they can he did come across the bag but on a slowly hit ball like that it's often better to use that bag for defense runner can't get to you can't go through the back even though some of pride during that somehow can bill deadlock pony prevented in the air to left field and a long run for Coleman and even with vicious speed you can't get there - the count is 2 & 2 the twins on top and meanwhile Conn Kelly just sits and looks and walkies and wait Kelly we mentioned before a guy who and there he is a real good guy in a good sense of humor he's in his office during the playoffs and somebody came to the stadium and somehow was able to get ahold of Tom on his office phone and the guy said the Lord has sent me to you to pick the first game instead of blowing him off as some nutty talk alone for a while and he finally explained you know I'd love to use you but the league says you have to be with the team by September 1st and the guy said ok fine very diplomatic way of handling next time Kelly time called okay I think he's fighting one of the most difficult things it's really it's kind of snowball the last couple of years in the media crush at a World Series and you have to talk to people and whatever he says I know it's boring but we're going to do the best we can nothing different that's the staple line you'll do the best we can and anything I know it's boring grease toothpick is fouled away he's not a boring man I know me Rick Horton on and relief is with him warming up in the bullpen and he picks up here in the mop-up role in the seventh inning three balls two strikes on Kent Hrbek a little looper and that will be caught by Tom Wallace for the app and it will bring up Lombardo's e another thing about Kelly is yesterday during immediate front at the twins work at a couple of kids apparently sneaked in along with the rest of the media from a school nearby school and they have their own little handheld mini cam they were going to take it back to their professor to show them that they could do some interviews Kelly give the guy an interview they approached them in some for strike 1 1 the count on Lombardo's ripped through the box one out and one on a Tim Lautner will be the matter [Music] amazing Lombardo's be home run you make he might over swing he goes back to the basics which is why he's been an approved hitter hitting the ball back up the middle and Horton had an excellent year for the Cardinals you look at their their pitching you look at war Ella's their stopper along with Ken dayley but early in the year Daly was coming back from the elbow problems Ricky Horton and he saw the eight days he carried him the first month where well hurt his arm sprained it eventually ended up with 33 saves but Horton bailed him out early in a year when they need a lot of wins well he's so versatile too he could start he could be a middle relief and as you said it could be used in short relief 57 appearances this year and as al says he can mop up and and that and we say that we don't mean that the denigrate of pitcher because force came in it wasn't very sharp I mean Kenny is 1 over 140 ballgame so he knows sometimes you have to take one for the club you go out there you give them the innings even though you are not pitching up to your capabilities tough to concentrate in a ballgame that nine to one but it will make Portman sharper the next time he has to fit into this world series if he does oh and one the cow one out and now oh and two on water well there were a bunch of a dozen Cardinals played right field this season including ten starters Fortin and todd worrell who played there in one playoff game or amongst the twelve in the regular season even better graphic and I'm sure the Steve Urkel mother did how many put out that they have when they got out there did they have any company Ricky told me hit one ball hit over his head went for a double he says but at least he hit the cutoff man to go over his head or did he run in here did he go into a really detailed description he said he was playing deep and the ball was hit like a rocket against the Philadelphia Phillies as a matter of fact that's when Todd Worrell played right wheel also I think he escaped yeah anything with his leg matter of fact I think Ken dayley came in struck out von Hayes in the more rel came back to the ballgame vogner strikes off and we bring up but some of the 40 or the giant fans used to call the man from glad Dan let's got to take a look at the strikeout of semi-log earth what makes Ricky Horton and it's very much like what we're going to see from John Tudor it may be great Matthews is the good changeup to go on with a breaking ball in the basket ball and excellent control that ball down and away from the strikeout wanna know the count on Dan black Grand Slam in the fourth inning Cardinals started tonight with a run in the second and in Minnesota exploded for seven in the fourth two more in the fifth and it's been a night of joy and celebration in Minneapolis what is P thought Cardoza get too far off first it will be a night of getting back to the dugout because weren't as well the best pickoff moves in the dancer Luke voted by the nationally managers the outstanding pickoff hook so even nine to one you're not really in a hurry to get the second base unless there's a base hit and I imagine the scouting report the advance scouting report with telephone you can pick off it inside the one you better be embarrassed no matter who's on the mound with what move well I'll tell you really because it's nine to one Lindemann now playing behind Lombardo's e YT hurts off bickering that's Lombardo's it's not going anywhere pretty safe assumption strike three Caen one and a strike in at three ensue [Applause] - up Lombardo's he at first Latin rips one down the line in the corner for extra bases and let's see how Oquendo flames Beaucaire he played it perfectly but still it's ESOP another one from Florence [Applause] he's Union mr. Lombardo's he going back through the middle after the home run a good piece of hitting by Glendon going the other way after the home run earlier in the ballgame and the reason for that I know you were thinking the same thing when guys hit eight or nine home runs during a year and they happen to hit one but that's great the next it better to hit the ball the other way and the best thing to do the reason for that you don't become overly enamored with your power and don't start opening up thinking you're becoming a home run hitter Bob Rizzo if you did it now claps did hitting instructor with a really see what you are about that many in the ballpark tonight the metro doll King the one Minnesota was glad in the second two down gagney hits the ground ball to the hole Ozzie Smith throws on the run and gets it a nice way with very much lost in the shuffle tonight we go to the 8 into 1 Minnesota Frank viola who has not lost here since maid the beneficiary of a Kim Won advantage as we go to the eighth-inning Jose Oquendo gar things thinking inside ball one Oquendo pack naazy and wallace in the 8th one and one and in the bullpen heat a certain is probably what anything else just getting in some throwing he's one of a long man conceivably he could come in but you've got to start thinking about throwing between appearances if nothing else right now also Jeff Reardon has gone down to bullpen and in a 10 to 1 ballgame you wouldn't think he would go to the bullpen unless he was going to be up in the ninth inning two balls one strike to count don't go those are the hands of somebody normally when the score is five before thank you goes and strikeout number five one gone here in the eighth inning and planked nausea is about it technology one of the three wookies in the Cardinal lineup tonight Lindemann technology and the starting pitcher McGrane tomorrow night danny Cox will try to get the Cardinals even in verse sly Levin will be on the mound for Minnesota fouled away Monday is an off day there is goes to st. Louis on Tuesday and on Tuesday it will be John scooter who is rain at home against less Straker that cleanse number three starters I think you brought up a very interesting point yesterday we were talking about sometimes to link see it base it up the middle by Benghazi the length of a playoff series to get you to the World Series dictates how you set up your pitchers and Whitey Herzog would have liked to have danny Cox pitch the first game again thinking about the fact that the twins have such a fantastic record here at the Metrodome talk about it 56 and 25 other to playoff with I can have clocks going in a situation where you start out here keep you in the ballgame you don't have to go with a rookie like the great possibility that we're coming back here wallace's struck out rice tonight oh and one so there's whitey leaning on the wall and probably thinking about tomorrow night tell me one ballgame to get you in that move but some boo maybe sister rationalization of losing by a heartbreaker or lose those Heartbreakers to the one and three to two rest of thing about Rio Lestat the economy the lack of walks a lot of times pitchers will tell you they lose their concentration when you get a big lead that has not been the case tonight Ignasi can roam free at birth down by nine Verbeck playing behind oh and two on wallet talk about the how the Cardinals won their theory what about the way the twins won their theory they beat the Tigers in five games and you could have seen fly 11 or perhaps tile and game 67 if it has gone that far which would have messed up their rotation Lombardo's e and Dagny communication still blombo comes up with a catch and there are two down even at home it's so loud here they didn't hear each other it's hard for us to really know whether you could hear each other talking and you know they're trying to communicate Tom Kelley talked about the fact that as you steel on board those who make the catch and gagney trip he said you can't even turn to somebody sometimes in the dugout and talk to him and hear no wonder he's so quiet nothing to do in his personality Coleman is the Vatican one of more amazing things I thought in watching the twins celebration the other day when they win the pennant Kelly he sat in the dugout and he didn't he let the players have their moment on the field and here's a rookie manager a guy who is fortunate to get a job and they really made him wait in the next thing you know and he winds up in it and he just he sits there and he's happy to let everybody else share the glory and enjoy the moment they'll all tell you to talk about Kelly they said he's one of us no different Kent Hrbek petiole even keep cars he's a native Minnesotan even though he moved from here when he was very young and grew up in New Jersey to make his home Jack me to Lombardo's e to the bottom of the eighth in a soda at 10 feet Lewis walk people [Applause] under the dome where everybody is smiling and where Steve Lake has come into cash now for st. Louis with the score ten to one Kirby Pucket sorry things off is not doing the hit parade tonight he's old before and he's coming off a slow ALCS so he's a guy ready to explode well very uh for a 332 hitter with 28 home runs he only walked 32 times so you get the idea that he is not a very patient hitter in the right field for a base head very patient very gifted well if you're not patient you have to be gifted now Greg gagney is the only one in the lineup that has not had a base dish tonight Greg oh four five but that's a happy oh four five if there's such a thing as a happy overheated freddy clubs up ten to one you'll take it over any time getting hits a fly ball the shallow center field the key having trouble and drops the ball but he can still get a force and does pitches on the bag pocket had to wait and so McGee will not get what would have been an error is that it's your basic eight six four seven third time tonight that an outfielder has lost the ball to by the Cardinals and once by the twins Kirby Pucket lost the ball earlier as a matter of fact that led to the only Cardinal run back in the second inning Don Baylor want to know the cap [Applause] you know when you think about it I get the players a right that come in here and the twins having such a superior home record and all of the players talk about the white ceiling I mean you would think that they would have it painted a different color white on white belongs the jerk not in baseball against the ceiling do it on the cap that's why Billy Martin abandoned ever been known to overreact says they ought to spend a hundred grand and paint effect he's right and Georgia green middle Wallace sahar and fact the first double play get Baylor and take care of the twins of the night Minnesota leading and who won [Applause] the twin cities are lit up in world phase in one there it is on a skyscraper in downtown Minneapolis a live shot wind twins the rallying cry here as we go to the ninth inning into one and Ozzie Smith to lead things off looks like Ally have seen market at first costly in right field mark Davison Kelly can give some other players some experience there's walk in the Columbia University graduate baby female today yeah and keep a certain is a new picture Columbia be healed no I was saying did they beat Yale they had lost 35 in a row and they were plenty ale today we saw a partly tamati and gene Larkin with the Columbia so we'll get our crack staff how to answer that question the numbers of seeds after this last year 10 save this year only two but again it has almost all the twins Carroll was hurt early in the year right there gene Larkin gathered and came in set up Geoffrey the reason he had such a successful year this lies to gladden Larkin at first and Mark David been in Z the new right fielder like a defensive specialist Tommy her with 1 out of the bases empty her is over 3 right Yale we understand 119 27 to 13 so it's up to Larkin uphold the the colors of little see you 36 in a row and they had broken the Northwestern University losing streaks of 34th Alicia came to the relative at last year her lines the Latin and left in a second out and it'll be limited viola whinny congratulation - yawns you know that brother message whose brother married earlier today you two infected congratulations Frank after than trying to close it Larkin has no rule on one meanwhile Whitey Herzog the last time he appeared in a World Series he washed 11 to nothing in p-47 wear white he is now down a composite 21 to one World Series game like Taipei against the United States the Little League World Series exact score guy Eddie relented on a nightclub [Applause] the twins when Game 1 of the 87 World Series [Applause]
