ABC sports at the Olympics a long-standing partnership again at the Winter Games of Calgary the Olympic tradition continues KBC sports presents the National League champion st. Louis Cardinals against the American League champion Minnesota Twins in the 1987 World Series [Music] Stickley but how much of a home-field advantage is this for the Minnesota Twins well I'll tell you al I can't really think of a team since the 1961 Yankees who have more of a home-field advantage than the Minnesota Twins they are 60 and 25 this year at the Metrodome the one problem today is the matchup they have less striker going against John Tudor and consider less Straker he was eight and ten on the regular season however he did pitch very very well against the Cardinals the one thing to remember today as I think out that the Minnesota Twins are going to be playing this game today even though it's gained six they'll be planet-like its game seven because after all if they lose this ballgame they will be going home and have a long winter and for that reason I think less Straker if he's in trouble will be removed early I need to see Reardon a little bit earlier as you say if they don't win today there is no tomorrow let me turn to Jim Palmer now let's talk about the fact the first two games the twins did what they've done so well successful two all season long hit hit with power Cardinals did their thing at home with speed now you necessarily feel the twins would have the upper hand major advantage over these next two games if there are two games well you never have a major advantage if you have to face John Tudor but if you go back to the playoffs they face two guys from the Tigers talking about the twins here in Minneapolis Doyle Alexander came in nine and oh and his last 11 starts they beat him and then Jack Morris had not lost in the Metrodome eight times in a row and yet they beat him but the interesting thing to me about this World Series is in the first two games which were blowouts ten to one and eight before you never really heard much about the Cardinals feed then they go to st. Louis and what happens they feel eight bases three run inning a six run inning and another three run inning and they come here leading don't we are all set now for Game six of the 1987 World Series tutor and Straker at the Dome you [Music] the Homer hankies out in force saluting the Minnesota Twins as they just took the field and a lineup for the Cardinals Holmen leading off he came to the park with the flu mist bat second Tommy Herr hitting third and we tried the lineup with grief in the cleanup batter and in the fourth inning Willie McGee Terry Pendleton is in Alana today he is a th again the da-jin effect in the American League park board game five he rolled back seven Oquendo who moves around plays third and Toni paying you back nice in the lineup with Tudor the pitcher now for Minnesota defensively the outfield is gladden Puckett Andrew Nance Bailey infield as usual guy Eddie Gaffney Lombardo Z and Hrbek Tim Lautner is back of the plate and less Straker on the mound who cooks very well the other night and once again let's get the inside pitch on Straker from the Milwaukee Brewers Paul Molitor important factor for left striker being effective is getting through those first few innings he has a tendency early in the ballgame to give up beginnings now what happens is he'll get a few runners on base and get a little bit flustered now as a hitter of the advantage will swing in your direction if you can just be patient in these situations eventually he's going to give you a good pitch to hit in these runs scoring situations and the other night he picks brilliantly and Kelly will take that right to the bank if you could tell Tom right now and Reggie asked them the other night after the game six innings and yanked him again and taunted absolutely and Paul Molitor said that he gets flustered in the early innings well the other night he didn't have a chance to get flustered because Cardinal runners weren't on but if they get on if anybody could blessed you the card skin well especially the guy was a flu that can fly and and we're talking about Coleman he has six tone bases and as we said in the opening the difference between this series is who has been able to get on and which ballpark they weren't able to do it here lot of runs it doesn't matter generate data of the National League is the plate umpire longer the rest of the crew if we went to a seventh team it would be Dave Phillips the first base umpire who was the plate umpire he one would call him tomorrow and Vince Coleman to lead things off Holden Smith and her something happened just in that I have never seen Vince Coleman came out and had the home plate umpire Terry Tator check the ball I mean for what reason the ball has been in play yet well I'll tell you what reason a lot of times some umpires rub the ball more than others the river mud on it summer much darker your leadoff hitter an elephant too dark crescendo bill for the first pitch of the game and it's outside and again Coleman not feeling well going to the park and bragging and so obviously a touch of the flu or under the weather it was still in the lineup in Game six missing her to follow take the side sticking of dragging a very good Bunter 44 infield hits 14 bucks you can see Gary guy Eddie playing well in front of the bag at third and that's what you have to do he's still going to bunt because if he plugs it to the right side you can see how deep l'arbre goes he is playing he can beat the pitcher to the bag [Applause] [Music] the crowd has picked right up where they left off last Sunday I mean they're in ninth inning form in the first inning don't love them it's a matter of fact came out here if you remember the other night 29,000 strong they paid a dollar to get in the money went to charity himself well this is the pitch the writing her doc said is a better than major-league average fastball was about 90 miles per hour in st. Louis and what's even quicker here in the dome where the hitters say they don't pick up the ball as well so Coleman gone Ozzie Smith 5 for 20 in the series mint 303 during the regular season and once again a much better left-handed hitter he batted 335 left-handed [Applause] I got a fight and it's one and one it was very impressed with a comment that les Gregor not only impressed the way he fished in Game three but he said another game but I think you talk a lot [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] right justice going [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] as a much better [Applause] 19:22 me welcome to 35 but a left-hander yes more difficult for him to get out even though he has a pretty good grade on everything [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the way that their breakers humping [Applause] [Music] peasant guys for the win [Music] [Music] [Applause] in the air to deep right field after nasty looking up at this one ah [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] look on a slider threw a fastball by him than he does speed up his back to get the slider in the middle of the plate [Applause] theory and not rooted in what an 87 kicked out of her back devil [Applause] [Music] so to cleanse laughs leading off and then Agni that second Kirby Pucket in the three spot he wanted to get hot Gary guy Eddie has six X and X dash the d8 today is Don Taylor batting fifth and comprehensive looking to get hot has is in fervently get another look the number eight hitter is the catcher Tim launder and ignite of the order is bebop are dozing and they'll be facing John Tudor the winner in Game three and look at the inside pitch and a gun from something win the National League batting champion John Tudors real deliberate so it appears that he's overpowering but I think it's his wind-up that really loves you to sleep he's got great composure on the mound nothing ever rattles him and when he's on he's really tough to hit he can't go up there and sit on one pitch you've got to go up there and just try to get your bat on the ball but if he doesn't have his good stuff then he has a tendency to be wild high but I think the reason why he's been so effective is the development of this change of defensive Lake Coleman began forward and right the infield of Oquendo is earth and spit her increases Tony Pena does the catching for st. Louis and John Tudor trying to clinch a champion a need for nothing home run Bobby damn flat you get a hit it rulefive rural series games of far to leave olefin Jackie and clucking and was damn started a Walter the grand slam home run in game worn on Saturday night there's less Straker who sit down the first two got a head on Tommy her the next thing you know it's the lumberjack [Applause] first outlet about the first time with those the guys after a homerun [Music] [Applause] [Applause] right [Applause] people [Applause] at one [Music] yes [Applause] yeah yeah [Applause] classic Alvin trip and [Applause] you talk with an interface of what they [Applause] [Music] that'd be very [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Thanks [Applause] [Music] sooner [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] everything is dry [Applause] kind of player fee and he hits a two-hopper he comes home right despite the emperor flying back [Applause] the class [Applause] right [Applause] right and all the flake [Applause] [Music] Harry Guyana bucket list [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] and God [Applause] last year for face [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here can see the fence [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] pick up by antifreezes okay don't admit step up to the plate third place that it is work not a lot of people were sick [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] . they learn take the price as the first thing with for wide-ranging support stop [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 7.4 game redeemed [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh a favor and get a bear [Applause] take a look at the go ahead single by John Mayer what's hanging way inside look where the ball is now over the plate this is literally by about two and a half feet tutor can I use a ticket only a fine he went you because you can see genius all the way across the length the outside often and this is three days rest for tutor a lot of people feel that would be beneficial to him in a way because he's a control film pitcher does not have his control as of yet [Applause] [Music] second block is Ricky or but if you have a good story standing alone while [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here [Music] [Applause] both hands of him hitting his bride down [Applause] it all right hi stop toward the middle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] right but he does know the makeevka run last and fires he's played an outstanding second day throughout his role against defending to enter properly competed in play [Music] so one down and Pendleton is the batter Gary the DA has been using her trip wasn't and that left 30 silk in that way man it was on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] great [Applause] [Music] [Music] third for now who had the hit the break is for the sign six hitting Thursday [Applause] Michael's going George the third [Applause] [Music] terrific which there's an egg men will be normally a real good feel that muscle come here probably start [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] whole [Applause] Rory got four I don't know is the matter his hard and again marcozzi showing right this is the ball he is making offensive a runner he knocked it down he goes yes that's one thing to know you want to get the lead runner once you now wonderful [Applause] happy birthday [Music] [Applause] very early weatherman doesn't live here we are planned indoors and may be throwing out this participation temper to this morning was in the Lotus [Applause] runners Peppa if you those back as secret webinar I made up a little flutter rayon was [Applause] I'm not too sure that weapon secret anymore oh he's used it to my George Whitey Herzog [Music] starting [Music] [Applause] we asked my client [Applause] [Music] [Applause] our locker [Applause] [Music] runner goes and then the right deal [Music] rotting in the floor [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what's wrong you know what he may be proofing he may be proving the Whitey Herzog CDs bro I mean that the big one of the biggest surprises of the fearing Kevin Carey penalty Kingdom on a steel Thursday and I kind of situation that's not a good stolen base situation throughout two strikes he told white Andy in the training rooms that he could couldn't hit right Hannah but he could feel I don't know if I didn't believe them but well that kind of jump is going to score easily I think that the pitching coach Dickes us went out to talk plus breaker he threw a petal three straight Kingdom we saw that once before with three stretches of Randy Bush result a double down right there one [Applause] the anti come too at a very disappointing and for a good lay back [Music] it's arbitrary [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] three in a row with her [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ever - please [Applause] and Rebecca struggling maybe tutor today I asked him what he expects to see from God while I'm searching for some curveball he likes doing a lot of curveballs to left-handed hitters and I know he'll throw a few in there but you can't you can't sit and look at the curve ball could be sneaking in with the fastball which he did to me over their place but I'm looking for fast balls to hit now if I could sit back and keep my way back I can react to a curve ball and hopefully slap at the other way so get her back he struggled through the player a b-47 demon number seven [Applause] Nathan nine right-handers to the eight right-handers one left he hit some time [Music] [Applause] like to see a few for [Applause] [Music] very well Nance leg back long path to a lot more the fastball up he is a lowball hitter 34 to 85 best years ever let's go hit the annex hockey player I would imagine that hockey players with that type of play would be to hit the ball down Christian God a hockey player right after the 1985 series is a matter of fact John cooter we're doing a story on it worth illustrated and he's clued up the state of a single hockey we'll never know about plays in the legal to create right [Applause] stealing again [Applause] and going when Woodcock [Applause] right here McGee no support no specifically important look inside [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Wow [Applause] oh yeah right [Applause] and ever there [Music] [Applause] yes that Roger if a penguin [Applause] right and workout [Music] [Applause] did you get it [Applause] does not run that well here's trying to get a bigger second baseman Tommy heard his job is the finest football player on to keep it closer in this case they pick them off nowhere to go nobody out there with two out that's exactly right Jim with two outs he could understand that his left leg that was nobody else was he going to say the Fertile field as a little stripper silver habit and frozen to die [Applause] [Music] [Applause] killing the monitors sitting down next door Klingon flyballs once it going to gates dead really unusual thing is that normally see the vodka walk you look around where everybody is do you feel as your fellow outcomes can't do it here and that's the one thing you can't get Houston can use to fall off the back edges the so contrary ocular I think is big reasons it's so difficult by the outlet [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] inside where [Applause] [Music] we're not sitting here trying to unite [Music] pick up but the key to beating the car go ahead Justin favorite dragons eyes upon his way on and it's a foul ball if so it's a monstrously over the last three games anytime they want to run they can run and we saw ten to one eight four they're not to run if they do it doesn't really make any difference so every run is valuable second [Music] Barto [Applause] perfect ramp comes back [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and that's what Joker [Applause] that press shoulder and wallet here to go under that I don't [Applause] [Music] yeah [Applause] the second to two and he's over the third back after this real opposition third inning at the Metrodome in Minneapolis Al Michaels with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver Game six of the World Series Game seven if the twins win tomorrow night he would start at eight Eastern five o'clock on the west coast and the Cardinals will send to the mound either danny Cox or Joe McGrane Whitey Herzog on shore it'll probably be a committee tomorrow night and Minnesota with Frank viola we know that [Applause] third inning cold and sniffing fire coming up Coleman struck out of the crew so much breaker who gave silly six pudding the other night has been touched for Ron tonight for today and the first and start the Coleman here with a touch of the flu [Applause] [Music] one in one [Music] [Applause] that's the only negative that I could see in [Music] he talked about they likely to take take many times until he has two strikes when he becomes the pork better contact Utterson beyond religion whenever he's gonna that's when a foetus appeal to mother base [Applause] Lowell on board okay the hurry [Applause] [Music] to do if Straker gives you another six and he's coming out look here to play by law for dosing or the Kelly who knows his club and exposition code averaging about 80 Irish about 5 and a third innings in the year get six shot it cut out in you have your bullpen Berenguer 8 1 rear to 31 days and they all second-guess to do from you see some interesting figures that we have do it over there is in the revenue [Music] er 1842 the affordances from the seventh on being at for only 52 at that because he didn't go that card to seven but still revealing know how properly should clearly finesse okay get in the air to right field and deep and back open [Applause] you a convert [Applause] period is to guide yourself Tom he secured the win a ballgame being live in st. Louis after over 30 100 at-bats without a home run from the left side here's Tommy Herr now in the first inning Tommy was too odd willed one into the upper deck and that got the Cardinals off and running made it for nothing [Music] Busch Stadium literally walk this is the kind of park where the pitching coach will tell you get ahead the use all your pitches and that's what Straker did to her the slider got it the middle to plate to jerk which stadium you could throw colleague or basketballs away such a big ballpark that you know if I did intensity not commercially James Basil's with more your horse accept [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ah [Applause] [Music] yesterday at the airport we took a decibel meter out there and within a hundred feet of the runway it registered a hundred two decimals that was yesterday any hapless need for airport and here is a live round language jewelry but right now but they'll get it up there don't tell them about [Applause] a lot of the burden a kirby puckett [Applause] now I'll tell you how they have hit your track record they should have indoor whole contract adorable run little ball here and on [Applause] [Music] and a couple of years so that the IRA golf or epsilon Oh easily crackable you also get it right now [Applause] like a smile it matters out in service once they've got the parking lot what's wrong olessa they fit the Visconti take away his power like was mr. mark McGuire [Music] date away I am [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] Diana now talking to a crow steals during the regular season Eddie the MVP the American League Championship Series takes away wanna know what a variety of pitches than you hit the hanging slider for a home run here we saw the triple that the game hit a great effort on on a fastball 97 miles per hour for Todd well at 414 feet the only fish he is not really consistently has it seriously the balls down in the strike zone and that's where kudos hula doll talking about everybody thinks I throw a sticker but all I do is hold the ball with the theme running away from the right-hander throw the change-up and then when I want to come in on him throw it with Brock the thief and ride it up in as across the state grill in the air to deep right-field and his room and makes the catch at the edge of the warning track and retreat so one long out one gun in the third inning and Don Baylor comes to the place he singled in the first I'll tell you the impressive thing about this Twins lineup is how they've approached Tudor the second time around gladden with the triple down the right-field line only puckett of all the hit they have six hit only Puckett is clover ball everybody else has gone the other way including Baylor his first success pops it up Pina having trouble with it Tony coming back and makes the catch well he did not see that ball when it went off the bat somehow he saw it on the way down and made the out I think even lofted partly on the way down he kind of he kind of gave him rough there him it's one of the streamers reactions I've ever seen looked a little late I believe he sees it right now but a little bit earlier he's just looking who was behind him but didn't know where I think he may have lost it twice yeah going up and somewhere when it comes down but what yeah watch entertain you right there he does very feel and what's this [Applause] like he was using again sure almost a scrub yes great shot two down and it goes he gets a big break [Applause] but we were talking about a lot of times you'll run on the left-hander's bird move now if he goes immediately he just goes in the moose and tutors picked off 11 runners last year 5 this year so he has a good move but he chose to really go to home plate Puckett took a gamble and it worked out Revathi with a cow want to know and first base open and John configure rather work through here for asking the right-handed batter and he does perfect the left-hand batter on deck and her Peck is old for 14 against left-handers postseason play and hits 225 against them I'm a little surprised they're pitching to Bernanke here but they just barely put you there walking out there real Oh Suter with only two and two thirds innings God already a gross this is something with a veteran pitcher you know he'll pitch around them the rookie Eden cure with first base open Clark up in 85 why you are living a hundred scientist and I and he's gonna crows it if it back in the club oh yeah this is a situation where he's trying to make a I don't really think you want pitch to him Bobby this is by of look two feet after missing by three feet the only problem with this if her back and over the year it's gonna be fit did not hit that well average wife at the 34 home runs only six against left-hand hitters but if you make a mistake five to do who I threw out too soon bottom of the third inning / back what a doll that are made with a Roman throat there are the six that are made with the right approach if you take the right approach enough and Whitey Herzog does that will make fewer mistakes say what don't cooter that if he hang the curveball or a fastball here perfect nips in the upper deck well you can't have that built-in though if you've got something like that built in then you're really going to make a mistake you got to go at it with full conviction excellent Murdock and really to resistance the ring is all not only a suit remember he's cooking a three days Check Point a job too love to the D here but again more than a 727 we do we do so in places the roof the problem right our curveball three-year-old about having confidence in your curveball after seven straight full force in the Cardinal bullpen ain't I couscous to us - on three and one on her back i flyball the left in a field that cooter is going to work out of it if Coleman could keep his eye on it and he does no runs a hit they lead two to the fourth we go a 2-2 tie [Applause] Dave Phillips the first base umpire we understand has confirmed that the ball Atene you caught eat that speaker on the way down remember how odd the reaction was with Payne Yin it must have grazed the speaker and it grazed it to the point where it probably did not affect very much the trajectory of the ball as briefs and drills one to right field and grew nasty we'll have to play it off the canvas is throwing the second is off line a double for treatment to start the fourth inning very similar pitch to Tommy Murph hit four home runs the high slider greases a double off the hefty bag in the second game does it again the only thing left is verbanski playing it's so well off the bench though he's done all year strong throw to second but recent in easily Lombardo's he hit the cutoff man getting out of the way not a good pitch but I believed anyone to know he thought it might fool them and it did Willie McGee now who grounded out of the second inning first on the cards about the leadoff man on in the D thousand oil one the ruling by the way on a ball cook who's that is that if it hits the speaker it is in play and remember paying his reaction after he had caught the ball huh yeah how about that I stayed holed it of course it doesn't make it it doesn't take much to get him to smile oh you're right and that's drilled in a center field for a base hit grease and after designating is being held occurred and now the second row go Rison a live shot through the middle was hesitating and that cost of any change to score and then when pocket vicious guy Eddie it allows with you to go to second second and third and nobody out I can understand Driessen right there you're watching the line drive the short stops behind you there's nobody out no hurry to go home but really a hurry as far as Kirby Pucket is concerned to hit the cutoff man and he fails to do that Willie McGee very alert baserunning and you talk about a hurry it is one Berenguer going to the bullpen for Minnesota and he will get some company as well and the person who banks accident [Applause] this is it when a clinch there is no tomorrow so they'll go to the pan or if needed Pendleton so surprising about that play by Kirby Pucket if you don't see it during the regular season it nobody out balls hit hard you know that Driessen you don't assume that Greece is going to stop at third but you just come up it off cut off then keep the double play in order keep the beginning from being a possibility it field is back and it's grounded to the right side and it's a foul ball so still nothing into Greeson going back to third and mcgee the runner in second with nobody out of the four setting the game tied 2-2 it's more understandable for an outfielder to miss a cutoff man with two outs than with nobody out with two outs greaseless would have been concerned with the line drive probably would have scored and you're taking a legitimate shot at getting it hitting him at home so an outfielder like the Facebook has to take into account how many out there are oh and threw the cap on Pendleton wanted to [Applause] he led the Cardinals in that department as a matter of fact gathers is bad or at least splinters it and you'll get a new one will account one ball and two strikes that's caused from the end of the bat being poured out you see that happen when a hitter hits the ball off the end of the bat and one of the rehan together the ball on the end of the bat is what we talked about earlier the three changes so Kendell this time he started with a changeup threw a fastball by him this with a slider feedback with a changeup a little bit different than the speeds of the pitches you have them out in front don't get the out but you can get a leash get a new back with your juice different feed you set up for now you can throw this about anything you want especially hard stuff on the inside one toothpicks a little chopper to the right side it's going to score a run and a foot back to quick at school [Applause] the cars lean and brothers at first and third and nobody out talk about the veteran John Tudor not pitching now well and the rookie less Straker makes a rookie mistake something that shouldn't happen he should go directly to first he doesn't hesitate and Pendleton with the rib still beat them very simple something you work on every day in spring training yeah there are two ways the pitcher covers the bag and one way is to act like a first baseman and that should have been the time that striker gets to the bag and it stretches even like a first day what you try to do you try to gauge how fast the runner in and when you do and penalty can run you get your first base as quickly as you can take the most direct route Tom Kelly now goes to the mound the lefty janitor the righty Baron gear it scored as an infield single for Pendleton and so the twins after squandering opportunity for the second and in the third and with the game tied see the Cardinals get a run here in the third inning to take the lead and the makings of a big inning and he's going to go to the bullpen and the call goes out for dance accident a lefty to come in in the fourth inning of Game six the cards are ahead [Applause] last time the cars were in the World Series in Game six they had a one nothing lead in the ninth inning and then his grounder starting the inning or to call safe by don dankinger on the call at first base the ensuing argument we Whitey Herzog to no avail of course that game ended with Dean orange singling the drive and two to win the game square the series and that World Series ended with Bret Saberhagen throwing a shutout in Game seven and came to City winning the series but that's history and now the president of the Cardinals leading in Jim Lindeman batting for her for the Statue to working three two Cardinals are not still nobody out of the inning with McGee at third and Pendleton at first and Jim Lindeman with board on the bench now the left-hand batter seated a shooter comes in to face London [Applause] the situation if you're Kelly you're trying to cut your losses double-play MANET the plate if you can induce them to hit a ground ball laughs somebody you'll give up the run to get out of the inning and stay away from a real big inning Oh too five did not have a very good year the record the lives really out for Lee he pitched he said he doesn't really know why but six feet four hits is only forty three innings wanted to the funny situation for a double-play ball most double play balls or balls that are away lend them as weakness however is inside one to fix the Lindemann off the hands and a little pop-up and Guyana is there with Dagny and it's Diana making exact and the runners hold that Gary runs the ball back into the infield a big out a real phonetic where did it go what were just good about Bill Highland took about four or five inches off the place / that's the key to getting ahead if you get ahead you have an option the key tags Eddie knows he's going to catch it and runs it back into the infield so now Oquendo comes up remember Oh Kendall a switch-hitter he hit 277 right-handed he hit 294 left-handed one little oddity though despite fewer at-bats right he did he hit into four double plays from this side and only to the other way and the infield at DoublePlay depth and there's always the possibility of the squeeze if you're the runner at third base on the squeeze play you don't want to brake too soon if you brake too soon you give it away and the pitcher in pitcher who won a few things they either pit you out or not to hit it out depending on what your philosophy so it's very important any second to say and if you're the runner on first please situation at dawn take one step back before that will prevent you from leaving too soon don't cry and the amenity rolled and hid in the more double-plays this way but on the other side of that same coin he hid for sacrifice live this year all of them right-handed and the two home runs are from the right side so chance of hitting a fly ball or better and he's looking for pitch up in the strike zone and he it's a high fly ball to right field and he tagged brunet on the row way off the mark and the Cardinals get another on it down to second goes Pendleton so ok know who in all four of his sack life right-handed it's one here and the Cardinals are on time by two and it's not play for Bernanke B's he's going the other way with a much easier play for a left-handed thrower well with two-out walk two outs he's going to catch that ball because it's para but right now he does not know I mean he has to know that he doesn't have a play and by trying to desperately throw the runner out he allows another runner to go into scoring position Terry Pendleton it just gives the Cardinals another chance to add a run remember Game three of the American League Championship Series Bernanke had a similar play but he was set down the right-field line and Tony Kubek and Bob Costas properly alluded to the fact that Bernanke could have been in foul territory however the replay did show that he was in fair territory Tony Pina now looks at a strike on the outer half for to st. Louis in the fourth inning two down Pendleton at second Jackson there with the Phillies and the Expos and the giant and that's why a lot of the Cardinals have experienced having faced it [Applause] one and one [Applause] typical senior rep and account wanted to typical hi-ho it appears that he is really seeing the ball so much better than he did during the season take a look for yourself notorious bad ball hitter that balls pretty much to fill the place a little bit out of the strike zone and if he's going to hit a home run insurance goes beyond that well I would thinking like the ball down better but the ball he's gonna tried the right field that fall out over the place going to third on a pitch inside in the throw not in time Terry Pendleton Terry Pendleton he of the pulled muscle legs out a hit steals a base and has already scored a run the last time he was on second base to count three and two Oquendo the batter and he was running on that foot I'm really think he's tried to deliver a message to Whitey Herzog if this game goes to seven he's starting tomorrow maybe due to missing and pain he goes to first the board that is tsuzuku amen now being pulled back he thought it was all all three and enjoy the last was marinated do you know the other night you remember what pina looked like he was hurt in Game five he was at first baby freak birthday and he reached for his hand spray and his flexing his foot he wasn't hurt at all he was trying to decoy that twins into thinking he was hurt he really wanted a feel on the next Piketty decoyed was whitey white he took him out for a big brother last johnson who went and sold something how great was that by the way again three into I've never heard of that happening nor have I [Applause] Franciszek knock sit down kick swing ball four those links is Dave Phillips and so the garden hose gets pulled into the plate runners at first and third two down and tastes old pursue another run on third base you don't want to give them a pitch that you've already seen that he had good swings out and that's the fastball so you hook them but it turns out to be ball four very close I think Dave Phillips made the right call he called it quickly and that way there's no argument right or wrong at least you're quick about it Coleman hitting right-handed to the first time today the 268 brain panda tissue and there he is info season this year and what a sling both pnath each feather hitless right-handed the World Series on and on that's what you have to do when you're trailing sometimes you have to take that gamble who do you want to face the numbers support what can casters doing strike two it's a good way to have coleman's not leading off the next inning to get them out two on two out for two portals fourth inning Pendleton the third pina at birth Pina goes and it's fouled away I know what you're thinking it was suggested to me this past summer that with Ben Coleman one of the way is to stop him from running in the National League of course there's no th is the wit with two outs and nobody on walk the pitcher pitch to Coleman lock up the bases terrified never allowing him to steal second base suggested to you by home by more than one person name he goes again in Coleman reaches for valchek none of whom I agree with peddle that's one of the great lines by the columnist Jim Murray back in 1966 we went out to LA and they said as long as you keep the Dodgers off the base especially Maury Willis you can win so McNally walked the bases loaded and that's what Jim Morris did he stopped their running attack cold he walked the bases loaded brought in drew bow ski he struck out 11 and 5 and 2 others inning and we were off and running Pendleton 1/3 and maybe we've been often running the last two fetches occur 1 2 2 : i drive to center field is going all the way back through the crack and [Applause] and acquired the leap I asked Whitey Herzog before the game if he'd be inclined to remove tutor earlier today because he was working on three days rest no I'll actually he's worked so many times his life of three days rest in 85 I think his record was 18 and one on three days rest and going into the seventh game of the World Series and the thing with John is sometimes he has a lot better control coming back for three days I would probably go get in today would be got up to around 100 pitches in the seventh inning and I had Don Baylor or somebody coming up Todd probably go to war hell if it was Hrbek I'd probably go to daily go with my power pitchers but I'm just shooting dice a little bit I feel that if they win this ballgame today and I say tutor for the seventh game that would be very tough for us to beat that I take some amendments which they would feel the definitely go to event so I'm trying to take advantage of what we got going for us by pitching three over and so far Tudor has given him the lead though he's been very shaky through three and the twins have squandered a couple of golden opportunities to score 14 st. Louis bottom of the fourth inning Lautner Lombardo's II and Latin and Jim Lindeman stays in the game in right field for Louis high flyball the center McGee they're looking up and remember nothing's routine one away Steve Lombardo's II is the batter a reminder those of you on the west coast for the Civic time zone coming up following the World Series the California Golden Bears and the UCLA Bruins Lombardo's e singled in the second inning I really don't buy what Whitey Herzog said I believe tutors a control pitcher but des prank by Olin said it's easy to pitch every fourth day with only three days rest if you've been doing it all year of course if this does go to seven games we will see viola for the second time with only three days rest hold it last year if I guess you could relate that to your career Jim you told us the other day that you never for the most part worked with four days rest you were always in a four-man rotation well we did it all during the season so it didn't really matter Mike Cuellar pitched with two days rest but he had done in a couple of times two balls no strikes the count one out bases empty behind the fourth inning Barnes leading 4-2 that's grounded has hit birthdays it's a fair ball [Applause] oh she has a double once again control so important get the ball inside in Lombardo's a second hit graphs it down the line ticks off the bag and Coleman pills not going to get to it Bardot's he was pretty good they've had more pitches in history seven inning good this is a shooter mainly because he's just not that jerk and they've adjusted as offensive dan black now the infield outside of Oquendo playing back [Applause] Oh [Applause] he can burn and the he makes the clay they avoid the collision and Lombardo's he has to remain a second and that is really tough with the ceiling and the noise and knowing you get the two speedsters on a collision course I'll tell you you get the feeling that if the Cardinals lose this game fault the outfield lake would have something stupid the Hrbek call back in the second inning the error on Magee and now Coleman and Magee almost colliding avoiding serious injury we've been back to what I said they cannot look at each other because if they do you lose the ball here and that's different if an outfielder will tell you once you see the ball they know where it's going to come down and look at each other to see if somebody's going to run them off that's not the case here that will almost rolled into Coleman's glove it was that close Jackie swinging and missing Owen 1 they're also making that point Jim that you got to play the outfield differently in this ballpark and it's tough to change old habit well that's that's why they say they didn't think the background would bother the lights would bother but they did think the style of the way you play the flyball would and it bothered everybody that's familiar throughout Lombardo's ii at second in the fourth face it all in two and in all fairness to the other 12 teams that do play in the American League is a very unfair advantage to have a white roof that they can't become accustomed to and by the time they do they've already left and all you have to do is paint not the roof but the panels up there certainly would take away a lot of the advantage to the twins which I'm sure would make them very enough people would make the game of baseball a lot fairer still want to remember we showed you this earlier this look at Rick's tell me is it hitting a fungo and how difficult it is to see the ball coming out of the roof what should you see if going up for a while the respect and it is grounded on a cord and hooked up six teriyaki wings leave another in the fourth war to st. Louis and we'll be back after this word from your local station and between innings Terry Pendleton trying to convince whitey he's just fine and he looks to be fine on the base bed you'd never know the difference the way Pendleton is run today so we go to the fifth now Michaels along with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver sniffed the batter and the count want to know for to st. Louis miss her and recently staff that are working on and on the twin winning the first two at home and in losing three in st. Louis and the Cardinals trying to do what they did to the Dodgers after they lost the first two in the playoffs a couple of years ago Lautner got a late start on this one and comes back and runs out of room Jack suitor by the way is the only picture and this is quite a distinction Ozzie Smith who has very few home runs in his big league career as its cools them off that's it they've only six lifetime we need but it's very important for Shafter to pitch go very much what he did in the fourth game when they came back from that five nothing toughest and he matches up so well with the Cardinals running attack to into the count they're not going to run on him but there is not a right-hander in the twins bullpen that they will not run on if they get on base the appropriate runners of course and they've got baron gear and weirdin still a man could become it it needed to into the cow well it's fortunate tom kelly also has jets that are pitching in an american under american league rules because you don't have to pinch-hit for such a good hitter you may not do it anybody put winning weapons right actually 253 life that tom kelly very much the symbol of this copacetic ballclub three into the cab Kelly I think more than almost any other manager today relief as much symbolizes the whole mood and the feeling of his golf club Griff thousand when I was talking with Peter Gammons of Sports Illustrated and some of these immediate people who've covered series for years and years talking about the twins as a group and I know it sounds trite but a real good bunch of guys nice bunch of guys easy to deal with [Music] mild and mellow towards Ozzie Smith draws the walk economy her aggressively and yet the other day after the twins start the World Series by winning the first two games here we pick up the Minneapolis star-tribune on Monday the subhead says winning angry the headline says snarling ball pounding twins win angry snarling food headline writers the managing editor certainly doesn't 50 player boy I think it what a dip it was the ten and eight runs they put on the board that's about it though yeah but it makes it seem is that this is a team of Oh Tommy her on one the cow exquisite first and nobody out 5th inning for two Cardinals that's grounded foul outside third and the count one two the Metrodome in Minneapolis a little quieter at the moment [Applause] and our decibel meter it's a very classic lady not angry or snoring at the moment Oh too fast is hit foul out of play there you Tommy her certainly picked a good time to hit his first home run left-handed this year think about the last three postseason home runs for the cartridge both kendo hit the third lifetime home run Tom lawless hits his second career home run and Tommy Herr hits his first left-handed home run of the year and only his third of the year if two right-handed earlier but they may not hit a lot of home runs but they certainly surprised you when they do that goes gets a good jump in her hits it foul so on he comes back [Applause] or speeds it's so important you could start a guy like Smith 43 stole stolen bases on the year two in the playoff you have a contact hitter so even with nobody out but gusty play where you have a guy today strike out even though he's a contact hitter and take out of the inning have a guy that can also steal was the hip run right but he did the face winter-like that will get curveball through with the pictures and that's currently with the purple and that's grounded down to gagney and he has one place first base and gets me out there and Ozzie Smith advances so it was one down Smith at 2nd and Danny Driessen will come to the play having grounded out and doubled almost like a sacrifice it starts Smith her gift is bad on the Balch acne only has one play makes a nice play off his front foot but you got a guy in scoring position to add to your lead which is already 4 to 2 now hag nominee contact na z the rookie goes intact and in the World Series d h and that's what he did in game 1 the right hand batting packed Nigeria stopped here to bat for the left hand hitting creases now the one thing about Herzog and he tries to take advantage here he's already got poured out of the game and now he's got grease and out of the game and so if the twins could catch up you'd then be in a situation where whitey would certainly be limited because the twins would go to the right knee energy the Baron gear or Reardon but white he's going to try to get the runs when he can and he's opted to go with Pak na see here with one out and Smith at second base all the changes he'd make so he knows that they don't have any more left hander so he can put Boris in for defense if you want to do it he can make blend them in at first and he knows he's not going to get burst down the road one problem you have here is you don't want to use two players back on D maybe to catch your pain you to first Lindemann Singh and right otherwise you may have to use key players here by having technology picked hit because recent out of there technology to my knowledge has no major league experience that the first baseman but is the catcher Pena has not had experience of the first place and has been working out at first base too close to let's see I am the heir to prune Anstey Tom feeds on it has room makes the catch miss a good second and moves into third as the throw is cut off by Lombardo's II so two down now back knows he's flying to brew Nancy and Willie McGee will fill up right handed all of those are plausible move before do you hurts your club defensible yeah really weaken yourself in three positions yeah we really don't know what we're good what whitey is going to do as far as pain is concerned but that would be the key if you ever take your starting catcher out there you're really weakening yourself defensively especially in statistics doing well and Tudor is doing well stuffy head and McGee hits one into right field for a base head to score another anasazi touches the plate in the Cardinal Valley by a four five to two so the walk this man comes back hurts accident they say Louis lead by three and son and such smart hitting he sat on deck on the bench stall the curve balls looks for one hit that the right-field doesn't try to pull he saw Tommy Herr do that he saw Pagnotta fly out to right field on the curveball saw the pattern of shattered her and then just spanked at the right we not only did he get well he was smart enough to look for the fifties been throwing now here's tangled in batting lefty against Lefty he wants to keep does Herzog Pendleton in the game so terry cannot hit right-handed we know that he wants to keep him in the game think about down the line he'll waste this at-bat here if he has dude to keep them available for Reardon or Berenguer so he sends him up lefty against Lefty and you wonder the last time the Pendleton faced a lefty left-handed probably a little wake ball something like that I would think what and one server I can't imagine this having happened in in the majors or even the minors ELISA with some extraordinary circumstance in any of them something that fairy has not seen very well doing was and in the bullpen Berenguer gets up again for Minnesota [Applause] second time juan has been warming up striker mechanical Pendleton's naked SP I don't know if mistaken is dead that it wasn't a strike or he said I wish I could turn around I mean come on no no I don't want to at this the G goes and Pendleton strikes out the enema Cardinals and insurance from Utley [Applause] groceries memory large Jackson number 44 in 1977 and you'll recall this one of three home run leading the yetis through the world title and our man red guru is here and you'll be visiting with Reggie on our and through the game forces John Morris comes into the play right field Jim Lindeman now playing first base and with Morris now in the game every eligible player has gotten into the World Series he's the 48th Morrison right bottom of the fifth inning and starting for the face into centerfield he's three for three Rick Rennick the hitting instructor third-base coach that when it gets hot he gets hot now look where this ball is it's down it's a way and it's the line drive into Center three for three when you make a good pitch in didn't turn out too good for John to matter of fact he hit three good pitches to gain jumps away and the bad ball at the letter height Guerry guy Eddie [Applause] Herbie had had four hits in the first five games he's got three today John cooter with a three-run lead gets it on the black of the plain on the outside on one [Applause] blonde Berenguer coming in from the pen my cinema set like bucket of birds nobody out and it's one on one with wind have their players in the game they're trying to get the crowd back into the game the crowd here can object he's so effective when they cure it up they have it really yet since the second inning by Eddie and you saw two through eleven career and over five in the series against Tudor and he hit this one down into the left-field corner for extra bases [Applause] well good fix it hit middle of the plate in guy Eddie as we said 31 homerun likes to get his arms extended and does you see Vince Coleman wall so Puckett for the score but me the important thing about this plate that sure double Holden doesn't overreact he does not go behind the runner and laogai Eddie to go to third base my roar goes to the mouth and Rick port throws in the bullpen and also pop pork shop as well the right hand I believe he's talking about the bullpen to get into action right there and take long john is struggling with his control the result is the blood drive course the righty courts molesting and when they get deeper into the game its alien war eligible fifth inning people the tying run at the plate with Diana brooo Nancy hit in the left for a paycheck forget the decibel meter get the Richter scale Don Baylor's first home run as the twin as that graphic shows to the last flagrant slander the world not twice sick great changeup too much to the plate no doubt about it three hundred and thirty second lifetime Morton name tutor out [Applause] [Music] Rick Horton is on to work he has not pitched since last Saturday he won when he worked the final two innings here he is four consecutive hits on six sixes in perfect now with Bernanke at first base and nobody else John Tudor at he departed nothing like reversing the momentum by having a bad ending when your team is just 4 - run - go ahead 5a - and that's what John was being able to do but that's what he did Ricky Horton best to put a finger in the dike go ahead on the first day from asking with it to repeat the game but he comes in and makes the play one God and lauder the batter is the master retreat the last huge home run at Baylor head would be a year ago and the American League Championship Series fifteen why's the two at Anaheim here we go lat Taylor came up and hit a two-run homer and they get five more and then was due out at two strike that was named Anderson that is a home run Red Sox went on to win the game and the next two and the penalty on one to count on launder and very similar that it was a hiker fall off with it he went out off the plate and yank it into the left field stands this was a change it maybe not off the plate but at the pitch that a normal hitter made single on Baylor as we said well over three whack it into the left-field seats to Caiaphas game brother goes and it's a comeback of the Horten and he looked at second and goes the first of the out two down and it will bring up Lombard OC tutors reaction following Baylor's home run [Applause] [Music] [Music] Don Baylor barbar doses folks in the go ahead love maybe shucks the loudest coke thing I've ever heard so loud that was Kenny Kaiser who are behind the plate in the four states that we want to talk to tesserae has to yell Kelly says that you have to yell the talk to somebody next why we're yelling this is not the best matchup if you're Whitey Herzog into bringing in divorce and following Tudor you'd like to have force or a right-hander come in at the different contrast as far as style step four struggled so much in that 4th game that you wonder he went reporting because of the competence of strikin it's 2 and 1 on Lombardo's brother repeat what we said the other night left-handers are more effective against right-handed hitters then right-handed pitchers are against left-handed hitters go with the left hand you don't really move lose a lot both for a skin guy Eddie for instance hit right-handed pitching better than left hand three and one with black contacts gladness okapi order Lombardo's you the number nine minutes to down Bernanke was leader second line drive centerfield [Applause] number three philosophers okay Thank You Park heading to sending over 300 before courtly it gives the quiz the first lead they had in two games and the momentum grenade he actually went through the left leg opinion 20 reaching to his right that took the weight off of the first leg consequently that gave Bernanke see the lead to the right that takes the weight off the left leg and Bernanke is safe they actually could be out in front as opposed to the block the place beyond it we've got to be out perfect heart wide by the net horizontal of a mild protest Jerry said it means to cool flight foul on to take another look now dear Lord oh she went up with the ready act and go to Boston getting instruction to he does not make a good throw he Pony have to go to his right Jim he said he gets back for a stood already across the place he actually told he set up properly expecting the throw slightly to the left of wolf life and then the throne was slightly cooler what if you are black the left leg the weight on the left leg it's the toughest play on a blow from right field the next step of players on the throw from Center because the runner comes in [Applause] hi I'm cool six-five Minnesota with four here in the fifth Bardot's e at first two down one you on blast go off a little lucrative Smith and that's that but eight men come to the plate four five Payne you set up properly but watch what the crow does to it it takes him out of his position to the right of home plate and that allows Bernanke to pull through that left leg and he had the weight on the left leg that wouldn't have happened you warned him off another view and you can see Terry Tator right there the old car to make the call drew Nancy gets his knee as payme attacks and I think that's what whitey came out and argue about did he get to the plate before he can convey to said yes and the story now here's their and Gary the work with Linda mukbang the Cardinal lineup right now recall with the two switches Lindemann is in the seven spot Morris is in the game he's in the four spot if Aaron dear working they've already spent four and they've already spent recent and they've already spent tact naazy from the bank that I'm concerned in the Cardinal Dajuan berenguer pitching well he's come any group it grows well over ninety miles per hour but they saw him pitch to last year with San Francisco they all know e throws 90 miles per hour they all say you'll get a good fastball to hit every time he did not get his breaking ball over the other night Lindemann hit the ground ball to second two sliders as then a forkball and this is not those berenguer that we saw the other night with the one nothing lead in the third ballgame that came in and gave up three runs on the fall on I breaking balls or fast balls when they got behind in the counter Oquendo now what Kelly is thinking is a one get me to the eighth get me to the eighth inning well II got the tune up with Jeff Reardon there stopper in Game five even though they were behind he pitched very well as he did all year elite the last three quarters of the year after struggling early oh you're right that's what he needs a couple of innings do it up I strike you just do not get with a national league umpire Terry Tator down on one knee used to be a strike not anymore not very often you're right strike zone is really dropped and there should be consistency between the cooler and there is they went through a starts outside protector to the inside - on for Fausto affair you got to show the hitter at different and speed the pitches that pipes the pitches and he's done that to the first two batter so far who Randolph this week's is just wildest MEU has that stat where what he threw 113 pitches and three into Thursday night and didn't lose her wind got a no-decision Boston only a six to five game it's grounded down into it fourth ball and there are two down go away painting coming up one of you from behind the plate a three to four claw you can see it plummet tumble top half of it Ralph all the shortstop I just figured out a way to make a million dollars go out to get the exclusive on a throat lodging concession in Minneapolis oops this crowd is unbelievable pay me to up Bart to get down five two two and you're in st. Louis there's no noise the downside the two here at least you have somebody cheering giving you a little bit of momentum so to speak think of work but I'm not I see Nia [Applause] through our sixth inning six to five twins and that's grounded for the middle the stop by and Minnesota sex st. Louis five you know only in the sixth inning here but assume the twins win and we go to a seventh game Minnesota has viola st. Louis has McGrane Hawks on Tuesdays what do you think big advantage quince that's what definitely I think viola learned a lot from the last start and the brain honor you would like to think it at 23 and felt a young man but I got to give the edge to anybody that has to comes in here he does not have any advantage at all because who knows what the cargo fishers are going to do they have not Fitz called Rick Orton on and relief he faces Greg gagney in the bottom of the sixth inning Jack need buckets and dieting let's watch Jack knee in the top of the six foot work is so important to a middle infielder and radicular watch the feed of gag me support we believe it but positioning or the rearranging of the position of the feet very very important that allows middle infielders to get off with strong throws as you see a lot of times you see the result is going to how they started strike to Jackie two and one Dagny has his three ground balls today per ounce grandma Bartles still have force going in the past there's Bob the chopper off the plate going to be tougher Ozzy leap throw [Applause] I don't know in normally if there's a will there's a way but there was the will and you'll see it right here we've always referred them as an acrobat and then again but gaggy was good speed in the high hop base hit pretty good 3 1 pitch down in the strike zone and not just being from Baltimore we can call more shop it was watch this is just amazing okay if you folks don't think this is a difficult place drive right now and that already heads the ball and roll it before you land and then go right to your Cairo practice here comes Porsche [Music] happy - here is Bob flourish on and relief he's appeared in two games and he was the winning pitcher with a lot of help from his friends the other night some defensive pins behind him well that adjust control is very erratic and talked to him he said I have no idea those 33 games he started 30 of them you said al he did get the win but great defense by a double play by Ozzie Smith twice and a line drive out to left field with Coleman made a great play on it for him to be effective he has to have good control [Applause] three five here fellow right behind home plate felony he has got a sign ready for every occasion [Applause] get the inside bit long time final five worst picture he knows how to pitch he mixes his pitches well it goes a fastball curveball slider and straight change and he doesn't give in to the hitter he's always around the plate and he's tough to still on he's real quick going to the plate which is going to make it tough for twins runners to try to steal a base I think the key to Tony's report and again Tony and Paul have been right on with their reports throughout the series I think the key is that he doesn't give in to the hitter and that was our point the other night he tries to get ahead of you and then get you out the 50 Kirby Pucket who was 4 for 20 in the first five game but today three for three he is scored twice he has driven in a run and he has stolen the base chorus with gagney at her face and nobody out we said when Bixler six and Milwaukee and then for hit the next night and hit the two games don't you leave us that it doesn't matter what you throw up there and fastball away I hit 332 do another three batting championships amazing hitter and hit the ball where he's pitched so he's very much like Kirby Pucket one year over 30 home runs for Tony Oliva Tony won his second batting title 1955 the last time the twins were in the World Series and the oldest article so force really takes off where we left off the other night Tony Gwynn said he's experienced he has to be around the place and he can't give in to you because he does not have overpowering stuff never really has has to be on the edges has to get ahead in the count of three and OH [Applause] [Music] he has to come to you as a hitter you're going to be in the driver's seat again because Bob doesn't grow as hard as he used to when he falls behind it's definitely in the hitter advantage to the hitters Japan that affected yeah three or four first my court the offending pag Navi who was out of the game of course he was a pensioner but so working as the bullpen catcher leak tunnel is already down in the pan and they're going to get daily up as well the lefty you're almost looking for hitters down the line up to when her back comes up but white he knows he could not afford and let this game get away does not want to play tomorrow Gary Guyana a big 5th inning double to get the point roll I won one you know Guyanese the kind of guy if you're a baseball fan and you don't really follow the quincy hear his name you know he's a pretty good player and then you get to watch him every day as you do during the playoffs in the World Series and he really grows on it well he is a good player and you really feel you like oh and do you say why is the good player he's probably gonna win her second gold glove in over 30 home run he really came down about 20 some points in average this year but he last year hit over 280 this year around 260 it hit the ball the other way pretty good speed used to play shortstop in college a free agent oh they're likelier here nobody out were in the bottom of the sixth inning in game six the twins trying to stay alive and they lead the Cardinal six to five Jackie at second and Puckett at first nobody else how to play where did he get away with a mistake their hide slider pulled foul good thing printers Bob Forsch is that even though you are in a can Yeti is not going to be funny you're not going to be playing for one run so if you can make your pitch and force you the sinker baller we're more effective down the strike zone you got the double you have the double play in order now watch this oh and to pitch we said cainy is sitting down and away and look at that high slider but it was too high right most vicious you can't take but tough to put in play a lot of people think that if a breaking ball is upset it's automatically a hanger and then it's easy to hit some breaking balls are too high but that the high breaking ball is really right around the weight the ball that breaks around the letters regardless of how effective it is or how hard it's thrown is usually too high to do anything with that's what happened on through the count nobody out and that's all seniors law so that eliminates the DoublePlay say he goes after this ball like he was crossed up usually when pitchers don't quit up there look look watch the myth right there looks like he's looking for something to break into an area and this kind of made a wild stab that's the fastball rule to pass ball computer bet yep now the Cardinal infield sets up a little deep but we may begin to feed in and a court who already says Ozzy anyway we're second and third and nobody out reaches out fouls it off Varis gives chase and well back out of play wanted to another good quality is play coverage of course made the pitch he wanted to make there and guy Eddie again didn't have a good swing at it but he did create a situation where he's going to get another pitch to hit the good hitters fight those pitches off and foul and the bad hitters the 250 hitters put those balls in play what to pick Jack to it to feel know Dagny 1/3 pocketed second popped up Smith and her both go out it's odd the underneath it and he hands it to the first down and a big out one away now Baylor and now they're going to think about if you look at bathers home walking bailar - Travis see here in-laws in the fifth inning batata game update I pitch to him right here but they're not they're going to walk him I mean would you rather pitch to a regular player 50 games a year or Don Baylor who is bad at 50 times in the last six weeks 50 his first home right I can tell you after never thrown at grassland almost 4,000 endings that I will load them up and the reason I say that is because I don't think one run is going to beat here I know when white he's saying let's load him up we'll go to a double play and Porsche is supposed to be a sinker baller he got that ball down to guy Eddie but he didn't get it grounded the big gamble Bernanke as you said this played all year long I think I think I agree I think I would have think to him because if I'm the manager I'm afraid our let's say Bernanke strikes out of hotshot now I've got to go and get daily to say sir back to get that third out of the inning daily in the sick yes anyway Moldova certainly not a clear choice there's no place to cook for now like the big difference he lifted in the air to shallow centerfield Agni is nagging Smith is going out and he makes the catch and the throw is cut off it was deep enough so that there was no infield fly rule in effect they sue down as hunan see pops out now you've got Verbeck and now you've got Herzog going out and now you're going to have daily coming in here so this is what I tease off the score right after them and that's what you do in the bases-loaded and pops it up so that's low fastball for a pop up of guy Eddie and a high pop pop fly on a high fastball from Bernanke so here comes daily to try to get her back with a bases loaded and two out in this some pretty fascinating stuff going on here right now because daily comes out of the bullpen bases-loaded two out to try to keep the Cardinals very much in the game to face Hrbek he's a specialist he normally comes in later than this but Herzog in a way maybe feeling the game is partially on the line here he's got to get out of this ending and stay within one so he's got to go to daily early yeah game situations can come in the first inning the 5th inning or the 9th inning and this is the game situation so Daly the fourth Cardinal pitcher they a tunnel a writing in the bullpen bases-loaded two-out bottom of the stick wins lead by one and Hrbek [Applause] her throws a slaughter and the 6/10 Minnesota back after this from your local station another World Series record tied Yogi Berra and moose coward in 56a to gladden did in Game one here's Hrbek with natural sound hitting it out in one swing a rape [Applause] or getting kicked off sucking doesn't it yes is tough a loser that's right seventh-inning thank you site on one pick from daily pin five then a soda in the seventh-inning Berenguer now there's another side own food [Music] Jays hit and that's certainly one what once was one but I'll tell you what daily and in with his best in perfect with better it's number one and daily some days you do some days you don't it's a lot better than making a bad pitch and have hit each one right after him and hit over the centerfield fence it's the herzog and thinking a little bit about tomorrow even though the Cardinals still have a knots to go want to go on on defense and he hits it into right field off the hand for a basic first hit of the game for Smith and the first hit off their andher and Tommy Herr is the batter per one for three Darryl Strawberry was the last lefty it's a turd a homer walk in daily two years ago and that was in an 11 inning one to nothing ballgame it was a high curveball kidding Hrbek hit the 14th branch slam and World Series history Tommy Herr tries to bunt his way on strike on one and also the first tip for Hrbek against left-handers in the world series he's now 1 for 17 but oh what a one-piece and people wondering the twins man Hrbek puckett when would they wake up hello bucket is free for three plus a walk [Applause] one and one outside signs like that adorn this beautiful city who is saying they said couldn't be done they turn up everywhere I remember John loewenstein one of my teammates who is state you go downtown Minneapolis screaming Hubert H humphrey Metrodome and inside before 55,000 293 attendance to the Hrbek for nasty guy Eddie become the Fab Four up here because that's who they are one and one account and now it's 2 & 1 [Applause] that though what does Dave Anderson call the New York Times yesterday the decibel dome - one fish is grounded to the right side and that's a basehead IV plan to hold at second and so the Cardinals are very much still alive and kicking two on with one out and John Morris is the batter and it's the first time that he has come up in the World Series even the last of the 48 of the two clubs to get in Loris we mentioned that the other night grew up on Long Island and Elmore and knew a couple of the twins Frank viola and a new team walking he met team walking when they were the fourth fifth grade gene Larkin birthday today as matter of fact he's 25 years old horace takes inside ball one that was whitey having made the moves before Morris comes up here hitting out of the cleanup spot the spot in which treason started then naazy hit forum and now Morris in the forest lot of McGee on deck break his bat one-hopper Lombardo's e to gagney perfect in five the only other World Series in which the twins played game six two six inning how we read on the mound Mudcat grin just a three-run homer to give these please divide nothing in and I've got an interesting story once this inning begins I guess I could complete it right now mutt cat grant mother's name is viola and he will be the starting pitcher tomorrow night if the twins win the seizure like it meanwhile leaf puddle comes in for st. Louis to pay see Lombardo's e now here's what ladies managing both teams right now he's managing this one and he's managing tomorrow night day via daily in the game but he has to get daily out down by 5:00 he's gonna need daily tomorrow night so he's got to go to tunnel right now to make sure daily is fresh tomorrow and its head in the air to right and right to Morris one God first time they've gotten the man they call humble today it goes back to the point you made two innings you walk Baylor to load up the bases to get their nasty to pop up but you as a manager make yourself bring in daily now I'm not second-guessing that because I know whitey would do the same thing tomorrow and the result might be different but what you do do is make you bring daily in earlier and now we see fun because you are managing for tomorrow the great thing one of the great things about this game is you mow over all this stuff there's no black and white answer there's a black and white answer to everything it wouldn't be funded it wouldn't have a charm that it does early what is black and white ten eight and ten runs for the twins when they play here in five and three games in four stadium movie that's driven to write and marek is they're fading on it to down and Dagny will be the better a reminder coming up on Monday night the regulars are back and one day night football at 9:00 Eastern Time will be - the Los Angeles Rams against the Cleveland Browns fans trying to get healthy and also if we go to a seventh game of the World Series they're going to play the Bronco Viking game on Monday night and we'll have coverage of that in selected areas for you want to know the count on gagging throughout faces NC ten five wins right one and one it's in the second game mr. Lee Wally looper to gagney to really kind of bury them but then and then the other than that to home run the launder over the centerfield fence Sammy her with a nice backing a stop and throw and that's bad as a 1-2-3 inning on to the eighth 10-5 win a thinning in the rockin hahaha welcome Elvis will be leaving the building shortly Letterman close-up hits me on the phone and he got some selected home run calls he wanted to hear that was one of them instead of you know it's gone or she's out of here we're supposed to say when the ball leaves Elvis will be leaving the deceased shortly or Elvis has left the building when Elvis left the building when her back Franklin into the seat no question about that McGee starts the eighth inning McGee and then Pendleton Apollo and Ron Berenguer trying to wrap this one up 10 to 5 you know Kelly has to think about something here too he's got a five-run lead he's got Baron deer who's worth to innings and he's got tomorrow he hopes does he want to have Reardon pitched an inning today and maybe be a little sharper does he want to bring Baron gear up he's a baron gear let's say were to go all away if he were four innings today he might be limited tomorrow and he's got this thing to mull over right now what do you think Jim I think one inning you think one inning for real but we go back to that story told us about trying to hit that kid in the minor league cementing soon as four was nine to nothing and when it ended nine to eight he's got to manage for today but I work hard and part of managing for today is to get Reardon an inning so he'll be sharp and then you do have Barron Garrett who pitched in four out of the five playoff games as you look at jeopardy he's looking down they're out here's a story looking for a method I think he'd like it inning fifteen thousand fact remember he had yesterday often ears Biola who will fix tomorrow but Reardon has not worked very much in this series he did not work in Game one he worked one inning and Dean - he did not pitch in three it invested for he can get ready and he worked the couple innings and anything in attracting in five I think you do it as much as you said you do it as much the Reardon as you do or Barron Garrett's what should you do rip really complement both pitchers if indeed that's Kelly's idea about bringing Reardon dance and I finish doing do the gap what's impressed me so much about Juan Berenguer a couple of tough outings everybody kind of blamed tom kelly along with Juan for squandering that one-nothing lead it's pretty easy to do with the three run Mac in Game three but he's really adjusted he's used his breaking pitch you learn from your mistakes and just one guy that has [Applause] bring it to on Willie McGee lore'l and good doctor London for the Cardinal I don't think God Kelly wants to bring in Reardon by necessity he would want to bring him in to give him an inning worth of work he doesn't want to bring him in my kitchen which there's a big difference exactly perfect one out Pendleton coming up you ask any reliever and they want to come in to start them if they have a choice but obviously they don't many occasions we mentioned viola definitely tomorrow what whitey said before the game was this that I'm thinking about McGrane fixing game one the other day he had mentioned Cox on two days rest but he said I'm thinking about migraine I'm going to talk to Cox will be one of the two if it's hot he's going on to day breakfast Pendleton hurts himself on that swing you can tell if Terry is a little bit of agony remember he's got the ribbed end and so while he's takes it off the counter zone wonder why he's gotten the green who has not pitched since Game one and Alisa has started in Game one and Cox on two days rest Matthews but Matthews has come out of two postseason games with that quadricep injury so it can't be him what does it figure to me whitey instead he would be very very unlikely to get into another ball game break Matthews better so what he does is he starts to look backwards and optimally 4yt he says let me see I get two or maybe three a noir L if daily can give me one or two I got to get me somebody to give me five that's where the problem arises well on the stat sheet you know throughout that you go on to a major league club house and it has all of the averages of the players and then there's another category that says others down at the bottom that's to the players that have been farmed out brought up and a conglomerate average for all of those that have been there tomorrow it's others that were both two others all others yeah thanks Val back and to ensue be interesting if they start Joe McGrane he really did not pitch that poorly than the line the line score shows that he gave up four or five runs but eight days between starts not the best circumstances that's not like pitching Phil 2 & 2 on Terry pendulum there is no question that if the twins win this game they have a much more stable pitching situation for a lot of reasons they're going with their ace Frank viola they have a rested bull pen for the most part we're certainly their topper we've got a guy who can go six or seven innings and Reardon healthy Jax it are relatively rested lined to right field c4 Nance key goes back and plays it off the trash bag and holds him to a single sombre nasty old the campus out there and well he should he can plant here to the ballpark open Pendleton said he likes to look for a fastball off of berenguer and this is what it comes down to he gets one and then just smashes it to right but down by five runs and having seen burn ants keep lay the trash bag out there stay right at first like really Yeahs playing the left-field wall people that are really adept playing a certain ball part Lindemann want to know there's Reardon now beginning to throw in the pan I know one thing about Bernanke if everything to highlight on him in my quiver to another gal you imagine someone trying to pick up the game they've heard all these terms now finally you hear about an outfielder claim to crash they [Applause] make you want to give up the game of baseball out burn everything three and up pepper nante 30 years in our telling this great kid nobody can place the critic like Thank You dick sucks is going to go out to the mound now with a count three and Oh dick stuck is a guy who knows a little bit about pitching he was a minor league pitcher for the most part and in one particular season this sucks was Oh in 16 and his earned run average was two point eight one there it is in 1967 York Pennsylvania Eastern League he was Owen sixteen with a 281 the RA and do you know what he got called up by the parent club at the end of the season didn't pitch though only apparent withdrawal you write that parent club would be the second addiction of the Washington Center there's not the ones that are now the Minnesota Twins the ones that are now detective Raymond and he said as Lindemann stands in with the count of three at all ready to take a pitch here such them in the last eight of the years on Cassini of the ninth-inning and the second baseman made an error to allow two months of course she wouldn't be talking about it if he had done it for huh in the air to shallow right Bernanke calls Lombardo's he often make the play do that much more impressive to the old succeed Miller of the original New York net won a game on the last day of the season to make his record one in 12 right I could 1952 Bob Wallace got a hit on the last day of this figure to get his second hit of the year Tom water and then his oh Ken doll was one for two the interesting to see if the game does there is play tomorrow will Biola pitch-around wallet to our fair stuff Oh [Music] Pendleton goes it slow and they just give him second base the Terry despite the rib problems a to steal today and was going on another picked at one point hanging out of time for whitey he wants to play tomorrow monitor and he might go right handle official he came here from the left side I don't think right he wants to back up viola a good Pendleton in the air to Center if new who is right this baby will flop into the glove of puckett Sir Isaac you never fail up at the end of seven and a half in five Minnesota [Applause] back in Minnesota Al Michaels along with Jim Palmer and Tim McCarver ik een six verse 16 of series each one by the home team Dodgers in 55 they went on to win yankee 56 they did Dodger 65 they did and pirates against Baltimore in 71 game we were in that series yes I was we were well fact the whole team was in the series still Steve Blass came to the mound and beat us 2 to 1 on the on the font of a bundle game of the World Series of here at Baltimore yes so now Puckett is drive things in the bottom of the 8th inning guy Eddie and Baylor to follow the tunnel in relief in five twins Cardinals in the ninth as you look at Straker who started this game for Minnesota the Cardinals have eight nine and one Oquendo Pena and Coleman one in one in 1955 when that first happened that was the game Johnny Padres shut out the Yankees two to nothing in Game seven at Yankee Stadium the catch in the 8th inning by sandy Amuro right at the line two and one mr. Baylor and don't forget mr. Baylor mr. herb x-day was the guy who tied the game the sewer on a glass in the fifth bring in one Furby tryin to keep a perfect day alive three singles and a walk three and two take a look at some college stores grab it through the middle third knockdown so play Carl Cole at the owner of the Minnesota Twins [Applause] as just like Kirby Pucket get his fourth hit an infield single for four for puzzle walk Paul appeared to hit the scene and we saw the other night befall on get her back that totally went to first place law hit the scene to start off that inning for the Cardinal in Game five it feel hit for puckett guy Eddie now one is own account make it so difficult on a turf but a lot of times you hear people say the ball does speed I've done speed up it just doesn't slow down any so even though you get to the ball instead of getting in the pocket to get it and heal the glove and as you said it when it has a four regular basket hitting a team and make the play even harder to a No 17 tomorrow night at 8:00 Eastern Time and don't forget we get an extra hour of sleep as we go back to standard time so if he starts Danny talks the good news for Herzog and he has two days and one extra hours rest take it where you can find it right right I don't know about you but the only picture that I ever pissed with would ever pitched on two days rest was Mike where and he was a more or less it or hard for when we first came up but a jump caller can change speech so a hawk really is not that bad the picture I don't think so even though he doesn't rely on the fastball of course the well-chronicled last three weeks of the 1964 season for the Philadelphia Phillies when Jim Bunning and Chris short managed by gene Mauch went on two days rest quite a bit she's still living that down that season down and that is a real shame in my opinion oh yeah was a truly terrific manager the center-field McGee got a late read on it but now he gauges it one down and Don Baylor is the batter an interesting thinking that you brought up in regard to mock and I was thinking of his nephew Roy Smalley of the twins boy dad played for about 11 years the big leagues uncle gene has not got little world theory and Roy as you take a look at Randy Bush coming up to hit for Baylor Roy jr. finally makes it into the series this year so a long long time for the squally clan and Roy jr. will be 35 tomorrow here's Bush Randy takes outside ball one [Applause] that ground is off the glove of Lindemann at the right field talking will go to sir so Randy first o'clock event the book with one out and bring up four dasky most likely will be an error but this fall is nailed you see them holding a runner talking about Jim little bit past it back and again he doesn't have any time playing the other way right fielder used to play third base pretty close down at first base I'll tell you what's really interesting the fact that Randy Bush pinch-hit been Don Baylor was the right-handed hitter when the twins were only up by one in the sixth city right it's the right hand I'll tell you why because all year long everybody's talking about Tom Kelly huge and everybody and I think what he wanted to do even though Baylor with a two-run home run we wanted to get him another at-bat in case he has to face talks tomorrow do you think that Tom Kelly knew that Whitey Herzog would walk Taylor anyway good question Braun is fair handling picked off throws and gets him on a wonderful play with the twins get another run and plugins locks into place Brown's African RBI [Applause] 11250 idea about that but I think Baylor would hit then if you take another look at that play Kindle as Jimmy said is a great shortstop to get the chance to play you can see why great range now you see the arm even though it's been bothering not too many Thursday Stephen get to that here you see the tail end of it on the play on the good throw the good stretch by Linda now they will walk her back integrally last time he came up there was no place before perfect on the bases loaded so the opportunity here not fits to them and take their chances with water instead they walking foot runners at first and second on Bush's ball by the way it's ruled an error on limiting and we can tell you this telecast is presented by authority of Major League Baseball may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form without the express written consent of Major League Baseball including member becs household where it might be replayed a few times through the years her back and here it was again [Applause] and at the store 9:00 to 5:00 and right now her back in first with Lautner at the plate and a half swing strike what's a second verbeken first two down in the eighth inning 11 to 5 wins [Applause] [Music] well I say it's a nose hearing closed doctors in this town don't do big business next week I give up between allowing food of the ringing eardrum [Applause] next to her that the twins get another run on earth to the ninth 11:5 Minnesota Issa it only thinks happening these days the playoffs are so exciting it takes the World Series a little time to build and early on in this series it didn't appear to be that much interest and then all of a sudden with three outs away from a seventh game and it's a very interesting series with with the exception of the series starting here as a matter of fact what's a good story it has a good beginning middle and end this is going to end like it began very noisily yeah well I'm sure the cars don't want that day I bet in noise oh yeah regardless of whether the twins win or lose ninth-inning Jeff Reardon has come in so Kelly does off as we suspected before they give Reardon and inning in as much as he has not been that active and he will be fresher and calms mine tomorrow if needed he faces payments and the caliphate is dania Coleman and Smith in the night Berenguer work three meaning tomorrow night he probably could get maybe two innings out of the way piston playoff might want to get the ball to start four out of five game outstanding job he change his pattern speaking of patterns this guy has so many options I really didn't have a chance to see him fits that much as a look at Kirby buck 4 4 4 run or run sport dreads Aroo a lot easier to score four runs when you hit three home runs I assume it's been that ball goose Gosselin of a Washington Senators 1924 that's the only World Championship this franchise has won and that's hit over Gagne's head in the center for a base set so pay Mia is on a leadoff single in the ninth inning and Vince Coleman comes up battling a case of the flu and old for for bench is now 4 for 23 in material I'll tell you I know that sounds a little strange but even if the Cardinals built catch it's the twins they would like to see Reardon hit to let throw a lot of pitches and to have them possibly score 3 runs give us up to think about not only doing that do you do you make a battle out of it and get them a finish but you get Reardon throwing a lot of pitches and spoil the strategy of Tom Kelly broken bat little scrubber up the middle and a nice play by lawn boy shows you could cross the bag and then come back and get a Nia's four run assistance one away here in the ninth inning such a good play number one he catches the ball and we saw what can happen in st. Louis on the ball at the dirt doesn't think about - of course Coleman is running but gets the shore out 11:00 to 5:00 Lee that's what you want to do gag me back to huff just in case something happens to keep the runner from going to third but nice play so one app and to our crew our thanks where the dock today led by Curt Goudy jr. our producer a great fan of our directors not only today but all 16 fibbin fabulous we need absolutely Smith it's an in the air to right field Andrew Nance kee goes back to the face of the fan that has it second one out rowdy spit and the crowd will fill their out sending it to seven here [Applause] if you are wondering about the decibel meter we show you earlier that baby is broken her back homerun rendered it inoperative gonzo out of here two out of the night one in one on Tommy her I think the crowd is pacing it so I really do like rear yeah they know they've got one more night so there are little lows here and there the rest of vocal cord Molly and Baylor runner goes and a base hit into right field with Lombardo's e going over to cover second and that was sort of odd because what they were really doing is let Coleman have free rein grow light to go through anyway and then Lombardo's he goes over and till he's angry because if Bob Bardot's II had seen where he should have stayed the scheme would be over certainly he would have had a play and you're exactly right with the plan behind Vince Coleman you're going to give him second anyway and that's the reason that Kelly is upset watch Lombardo's in the top of your screen you do that out of habit but a case can be made that the ball games overhead e stated instantly he rather have excuse me I'll rather help do it an 11-5 can learn habit didn't haven't happened tomorrow night there were close game though they'd be holding Iman that's group but then there'd be a reason to cover yeah right oh and one account on Juarez with two out and two on the ninth and Minnesota leading eleven five that's the most emotion we've seen from Tom Kelley and then and again that's not putting pennies sounds like her looks like a baby putting down a second baseman but he'll learn from I'm sure he'll talk to him and it's not going to happen again baseball's all about living-learning failing succeeding butter goes contested feel and it gets coming here a second base just put a good idea of why you need to blow out the cargo Oh gargles down to their last strike Brown is the perfect foul ball there are two Amy and the Cardinals one more night in Minneapolis reminder those of you on the west coast Halligan UCLA college football follow oh and to wanted to popped up Widener coming over and the twins seven [Applause] [Music] Budweiser play of the game hands perfect Ken dayley had come in [Applause] six bases loaded [Applause] he was getting hurt thank you very much I'm Michael with me a couple of stars in the ballgame all three I'm Kent Hrbek did you feel that they had to hear from you free guys today offensively you've been kind of quiet the World Series putting the whole talk be kirby group he's doing with a big home run fourth one I get tied up I guess don't know what to make it did warhead forehead four runs scored nice going well thank you I was just coming to pick the ball up the middle day to that a changeup to kind of stay back and just stay within myself like I've been on a year and I'm just glad to do it today Johnny Baylor a lot of experience that reflect again a big home run what does the change of gas pretty sure of a good pitch for true and that's the voice I was looking to quadrant one Minnesota's wind you guys come home you never say die let's go back up now Mike thank you ready so that's the story from Minneapolis Al Michaels Jim Palmer Tim McCarver saying so long from a dull with a Quinn's even the series at three games apiece speed in the Cardinals today 11:00 to 5:00 coming up next to the West Coast California and UCLA tomorrow on court the McDonald's basketball open speech in Soviet Union against the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks and then tomorrow night the one game showdown Game seven of the World Series from the Metrodome eight Eastern five Pacific Game six of the 1987 World Series has been brought to you by Merrill Lynch by Budweiser each would age were that clean crisp pace this Bud's for you by AT&T the right choice and by Chevrolet the officials firing truck to Major League Baseball this has been a presentation of ABC Sports recognized around the world as the leader in sports television we'll see you tomorrow [Music]
