and for John Elway eyes in the back of his helmet eyes to escape ambition to see his open man their long-range focus is on Superbowl Sunday in San Diego will it be a return for John Elway and the Denver Broncos or will Bernie Kosar Cleveland Browns see a long-awaited Super Bowl dream come true on National Broadcasting Company presented [Music] one National Football League [Music] today from Zephyr Mile High Stadium it's the AFV championship Cleveland Brown versus the Denver Broncos Rock you by budweiser proud sponsor of the 1988 US Olympic team this pods for you i cubed packard computer solution from the people who never stop asking what if by Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately and by United Airlines we've dedicated to giving you the service you deserve come fly the friendly skies mid 40 degrees blue skies home of the Broncos Mile High Stadium with its giant splashes of orange the home-field advantage Denver this has been a happy place to play no team in the National Football League has won more at home in the last four years than the Denver Broncos that's the challenge facing the Cleveland Browns hello everyone Jack Enberg with Merlin Olsen and we're delighted to be with you for this AFC Championship a rematch of last year's classic game and the home field you hear about all the distractions Merlin the visiting team that got one advantage that really gives Denver Nick I think that's obvious here this is the noisiest outdoor stadium in the NFL and that noise does one thing to a visiting quarterback makes it difficult for him to be heard Bernie Kosar loves to call audibles in fact sometimes 25% of the plays are audible that the line of scrimmage that will be very difficult for him here today having a shot against this loud crowd give us something early to look for what do you see in this first quarter I think one of the things we'll see very quickly as both teams trying to control the tempo of this game if I could borrow a basketball analogy the Denver Broncos are going to want to play fast break football put the emphasis on speed and big plays they feel they can make Cleveland play their game they take the advantage all right thanks Glen Brown what kind of a basketball look will they offer a different kind of look altogether they want to get you inside a more deliberate game a more physical game they want to muscle you inside that means controlling the football running up inside a fringe benefit of that is keeping the ball out of lboys hand well Marty Schottenheimer the Cleveland Browns coach like all of those opposing the Broncos this year has had to worry about how to stop John Elway what will he try to do well headaches top may be the wrong word control Elway maybe a better word you have to get the defensive end up outside to maintain containment at the same time worrying about rush lane for the tackled inside Elway is not afraid to run that ball up inside but he is most dangerous and makes the biggest plays when he is running to the outside and throwing that football downfield Marty Schottenheimer 44 years of age his fourth year so very close to bringing the Browns to the Super Bowl last year only to be heartbroken on his home field a slight underdog and on the near side Dan Reeves what a remarkable job of coaching Dan Reeves has done this year a defense that has been revamped a series of critical injuries and here he is back in this AFC Championship game you see the testimony of this loud crowd shaking our cameras in their enthusiasm the kickoff we're ready now and it sponsored by Budweiser the king of beers rich Carlos who kicks a field goal in overtime defense Denver for the Super Bowl last year only to lose to the New York Giants and Gerald McNeil the Ice Cube who is on his way to the Pro Bowl only forty-two pounds for return man but there are butterflies in place of ice at this moment for him as he stands in that end zone Cleveland will start from the noise here into the field the AFP Championship is underway it spins through McNeal at the goal line dropped at the 12 yard line bori made the tackle Bernie Kosar only 24 years of age the quarterback Ernest kleiner and Kevin Mack will be the running threat red team langhorne is the fastest to the brown Webster slaughter perhaps the most dangerous Ozzie Nelson many times a Pro Bowler died in the blockers fall gray Procopio looking for my damn spike regarded as the best of the five and Cody rising at right tackle there is a physical advantage there for this Cleveland offensive line let's see if they get to it early to make it tough on Bernie Kosar Simon Fletcher with the sack at the for no fumble he was down you have the feeling and the intensity of this huge crowd and of course Cleveland is back in the horse to end of the stadium that's where it is noisiest it's proud also very very close to the field watch Bernie getting out of there at balls not fumbled as you said dick and Keller was on the ground second the night cream Ernest Byner to the 10 maybe the 11th miner from East Carolina he's the heart of that Cleveland offense behind Kosar highly regarded by his coaches and players in fact finer according to Marty Schottenheimer he said after Kosar he's a last man I was raised there's a defensive line for Denver front three and their linebackers Fletcher Mecklenburg a star Hundley and Ryan and the secondary Dennis Smith number 49 party with names and welcome into corners early the other safety net in a dozen [Applause] over the middle incomplete look at this it's intercepted on the trouble Freddy Gilbert number 90 [Applause] almost deja vu for this Denver team a big turnover in the game last week against Houston down the same into the field to set them up for their first point watch this ball bouncing right off the hand they're juggled what by Dennis Smith well he comes up with it Gilbert comes up with it they've got the shot from the 17 yard line Webster slaughter kicking the ball off his five at Jeremiah Castile who doubled it forward for the big defensive end Gilbert a short shot for Elway and the Broncos open the game from the 18 minders underrated booked solid he likes white 22 the tackle what kind of dance is that dick kemper it is certainly I happy when I can tell you that Denver concerned right now you only get so many opportunities in a game right now Denver concerned about converting this early opportunity and at some point so that the earlier game the [ __ ] is unable to convert I think deep drives and then late in the game it was Minnesota inside the tent unable to come up with a big money winder hit hard but folks 4% he has a first down at about the 6 yard line it was Felix white again the safety man dick so very often we talk about how Elway powers this offense but let's give some credit to Sammy winder winder so very dependable one of those backs that rarely fumbles the football you see him protecting it in close and I'll tell you he sells out he will give you every ounce of energy he has ball now on the 7 yard line is under looking into that end zone 6 yards and then five or winder on the first two carries in from Southern Mississippi [Music] at all except Cleveland white and as Leon file let's look at the Denver Bronco offense Elway with winder and Lange the teal for the injured Vance Johnson he's in the hospital that groin injury suffered last week hemorrhage Mark Jackson Clarence Taylor tight end spot to touch down in Tucson stuttered Bishop approval or Freeman Humphries an Lanier are the offensive lineman and Carl Hairston the veteran defensive end number 78 for the Browns injured on that last play Big Daddy is the art goal of that defensive line for these Browns eight sacks on the year he's not a man they would like to lose when we return it'll be second and goal for the Bronco yet eight sacks delete the Browns issue earlier in the year he had a concussion and they asked them Clancy what was wrong with him he said he had a cracked brain I don't don't think that's true he looked like he's fine at good news for Cleveland back a loss of a yard on that person goal play so Elway looks at second and goal [Applause] the tool and motion he throws wide open touchdown Ricki natheles so the early turnover for the Denver Broncos they go 18 yards in five plays Elway to Mathilde rookie for the touchdown and Carlos tries the extra point tremendous protection on that last play enough time for Elway to wait for the seal to come open look at this great offensive protection Elway patiently wait a little fake right there a look away and now a seal open in the end zone or the death have some zip on it Adam was carrying the seal right off his feet 7 nothing we break goes to Kendra they capitalize as Elway hits the keel 8 yards up and the quarterback of the Broncos has given Denver a chance to cheer and cheer hard early as Charlotte will kick it off Fontenot and McNeil are deep angles it to the far side looking into the Sun McNeil at the 9 as a gap and returns to the 35 where JC Clarke makes the tackle let's go back to the touchdown and what a job Elway did with his I talked about lways abilities to look people off and as you watch him drop back he's going to look to the outside no man open now he looked back to the opposite side and I think was able to freeze any Johnson number 51 just long enough to keep him out of the action look there get that little pump fake he wanted to go to Nikhil all alone Bernie Kosar with better fuel position from his 35 [Applause] Kevin meant from cleansing its powerful back to the 42 yard line where Tony lura makes the tackle Mile High Stadium on a perfect football afternoon temperature in the mid 40s Dick Enberg Merlin Olsen under blue skies nearly snow found Rockies and the Denver Broncos trying to repeat a return to the Super Bowl representing the FC with a fumble intercepted whatever it was a ball caroming free off Webster slaughter take over the 18 and an L way through the field touchdown giving the Bronco cle-cle one second and four flashing to the 45 will be just shy of a first down Fletcher Townsend Kragen holdin on the South Greg Cragen one of the smallest nose tackles in the NFL giving away about 20 pounds - Mike Babb the big center then you notice how Cleveland has immediately gone up inside they want to establish that power game I want the force Denver to respect that before they stretch them to the outside they were tough third band last who would power running by Kevin Mack and his 225 pounds pushing Tony Lilly forward enough that it appears he made the person might be a measurement however when he picked him up with his helmet had lifted him almost off the ground tremendous lake drive and surge looked like he was trapped behind the first down yardage Jim honey the referee is asked for the team game [Applause] Rickey Hundley is one of the most physical of these defensive players for Denver he's the battering ram they need him getting up field disrupting the timing you watch him as he flows with the plate of the inside he's there to help Lily with the tackle just barely a first down but that's enough for 238 town Nunley from Arizona going back to your basketball analogy he's got some beef Americana stop that middle game those are great protection no one open now it flops it out the finer and finer is in Denver territory 448 mecklenburg with a shackle of six yard game this is not a classic throw that's another state but who cares Bernie Kosar gets the job done and bottom line what we want from a quarterback is performance you get that from co-star little shot foot here but it's just as good as a tight spiral invasion of vendor territory for Cleveland second and four finer wiling behind that big offensive line to the 45 where the Pyrenees about a yard short of a first down as he gets up Ernest Byner who is not highly regarded in the draft he was a 10th round pick 280th man selected Milledgeville Georgia with a retired his high school number and he's again what did John Hamre say yesterday that the tough games of the common feeling is give the bald Ernest let him handle the ball he'll find a way to help us win great confidence that is leadership performance leadership for the Cleveland offense he's also an extremely versatile player blocker receiver runner he can do it all at 123 yards last week his time as Kevin Mack crumbled and Denver says they have it they do Steve Wilson number 45 exhale similar to the beginning of last week's game against Houston the SAG early play the turnover the touchdown by Denver Houston drove down the field only to turn the ball over down there the goal line here we see the drive houston dry very cleveland driving the football and out in the middle of the field Lili rips it away and Denver recovers the Broncos had their second turnover midway through the first quarter Kevin Mack had the first down but in his desire to get poor they straighten him up 22 Lily puts it away and eventually it will be 45 Steve Wilson will recover that's the end of that play knock Biden to 49 in offense what a big place second turnover gimble of the ball as something both coaches talked about yesterday one thing they came to this Elway looking for a bundle gets away those guys in the back of his helmet to the 48 yard line the thing that used to drive me crazy about filter quarterbacks in the NFL was their ability to sense when you were coming from behind you'll see it here Matthews 57 lifting from the outside they push him by claret Kaiba look how he gets in right there on Elway in Elway seemed to feel that pressure his eyes directly in the opposite direction and yet able to pull away Elway spring as a runner there and plants who eventually made the tackle seven minutes left in the first team Ling to the ping we talked about fast-break football and here it is Denver usually throwing the football to get this kind of game for what a great play by Dean laying explodes into the secondary downfield before they get on the bounds and Denver Brett again they did not have to run that long all year 29 the longest and a rebel Gordon Cooper Lang the draw the winder and he's inside the five Matthews and Mike Johnson attacker big Orson Mobley let that play up inside from his hvac position making room for winder as Denver I think taking advantage of the Cleveland anticipation of Elwes running game to slam that ball up inside and take advantage of their own running ability from before winder to the true that'll be a yard shy of a first down in a very big plane out for the Cleveland defense third and one the brown didn't allow too many in fact the best in the NFL 26 touchdowns scored against Cleveland the matchup of a very fine defense against to find out at offense that's David Hall a Browns defensive coordinator and a fine job of improving the quality of this defense and one of the things they have done extremely well during this year is shut down the running game not so here in this first quarter against Denver always sneaking forward for the first down it appears that he was able to wedge that inside the one it is inside the one yard line Jim honey motions first note not yet turn Cleveland can ask for a measurement if they they're going to get it many Robinson or any Johnson inside asking to have this one majored I don't think there's any question I think they have it but I don't blame him you want a little time to regroup down there get that defense together first and goal Kevin Mack can only hope for a big play tackle it might pop the ball free to save another 7 on a turnover plenty of time to go 526 left in the first quarter but Marty Schottenheimer 's Browns a couple of mistakes very close to paying dearly for both of them [Applause] doesn't get in good defensive play by Mike Johnson and Anthony Grieg's 53 grade to 59 Johnson three linebackers involved Eddie Johnson in there as well and look to the outside looked like there was going to be an opening outside but it's rigged at the bottom of that stack Betty Johnson reaching out to lock up on that ball carrier keeping away from the end zone best defense in the NFL second best against the room after yard loss on that play we got a towaway rolls on it a kick free out of the pile everyone was searching for the ball and go right at the lamp of Elway what doesn't hurt either sometimes in whatever it blends up that way never got that watch Mike Freeman number 62 at school and mostly number 30 that call up and Elway appeared to be pulling on literally he gets it in his hands now the ball is on the ground and John they're just in time with Chris walkins number 37 on his back but I'll tell you you got to breathe a little early to grow on the dentist or mom and you see that ball bouncing all down that points to the goal line Destin in motion [Applause] way over the middle incomplete so for the Cleveland Browns a moral victory flag is down and it may be a motion penalty against Denver Oh holding against Cleveland Oh [Music] that'll bring with it an automatic first down Frank Minnifield arguing with the officials foresee Cleveland cornerbacks play a very aggressive bump-and-run styling number 31 defense half the dishes of the goal line and for sound so instead of a field goal attempt Denver gets another four downs as Minnifield a Pro Bowler he and Hanford Dixon the talented tandem on the outside for Cleveland both on their way to the Pro Bowl but their man coverage in this case too much to the man Minnifield and the penalty into reverse school no one there for Cleveland [Music] don't run that kind of play on a bad defense because what you're doing is taking advantage of their reaction to the play and of course did work a very emotional Cleveland defense moving quickly they're trying to shut off the run to the right and all along [Music] Karla's all the extra pay bored at 14 nothing and that was a faithful drive for Denver one play alone Elway had his hands on it three times fumbled the snap had the ball on the second fret and then had to fall on it at the three and then after Cleveland thought they had stopped Denver squared and goal to bring up a fourth down play Linna feels guilty upholding and then the Broncos quickly on the reverse to school get seven points three minutes 54 seconds left in the opening border the first to kick off has hit the ball to the far corner so that McNeill even though he's the more dangerous of the through has to look into the Sun and he'll try it again let's go coming up to the 12 and dropped at the 30-yard line let's go back to Frank Minnifield defensive holding call that set up the touchdown for Denver you'll see Minnifield coming in at the top of your screen right there stop it here he is at the top of your screen locked up now let's see if we can see what he does he has the inside hand right into the chest of the defender and the flag will come from the endzone and that was during our last timeout as he parks it the officials there the dogs the Cleveland offensive players they proudly have given themselves that nickname but they didn't want to do that kind of howling today those are down the middle to Ozzie Newsome and the veteran tight end has a first down at the Denver 45 Dennis Smith made the tackle 25 yards on the play the Browns want to challenge this Denver defense up the middle the injury to Mike harden puts a new safety in there Ozzie Newsome invading the territory patrolled by Dennis Smith 49 see how much room he had there is Smith late in arriving to make that tackle no one has caught more passes in NFL history at that tight end position [Music] loosen up him petals go flag Martines made the play oh that was close painted a big game against Houston last week tremendous game watched the timing here arriving now you can be technical since we're in slow motion say there was contact as Ozzy was mentioning to the official but so close it was not called and after being AWOL for two years basically mark Haynes has come back this year to become the most outstanding of these defensive backs defense coverage man and defenses in this secondary for the Broncos [Applause] who's barely got the ball to binder and finer with ten yards to the 35 mecklenburg with a soft carl mecklenburg from minnesota he's back to the Pro Bowl as he has been the previous two years he's at the defensive end position on the left side number 77 here they're trying to get pressure from that side and anticipating the path Browns crossing them up with an excellent running play on that ticket er down Mecklenburg today will be Viet linebacker he'll move inside and outside as well as finding himself at defensive end circular third and less than a yard Oh gonna pass wide open on this night Gary spinel was tied in from UCLA and he has a first down at the 29 coasts are so confident and you sent the confidence of Linda Infante and co-stars ability to find the open man a brilliant student of the game he has gained so much confidence in the last year and the one thing that impressed me most in talking to Denver's deep into coaches they said this guy reads defenses so well we're throwing out a lot of the stuff we ordinarily do to try and fool a quarterback well that's a high compliment to a 24 year old [Applause] [Music] second effort after Mecklenburg had him for a loss miner that lived for three just add to that note that he was just one year old Kozar when Cleveland won its last NFL title in 64 if he stays healthy in the year 2000 he'll be 36 so he could be around for a while Kosar who would have been a rookie this year had he played his full term at the University of Miami always heard Ozzie Newsome said to think about when he gets be an old player like 25 without for a second in seven rounds in the first quarter fake reverse car that's going to be intentionally grounding the ball Andre Townsend had him wrapped up Kosar does not run well by his own admission he says I'm no ballet dancer and he also does not make that many mistakes this in particular is a mistake because he was too obvious quarterback has to be a good actor if he's going to dump that football there's no doubt about that they thought of all throwing the yellow intent Hill down into the ball from an ice-cream seller the previous spot and wassail down that's the toughest penalty of the books lots of pen and a down third and 17 [Applause] those are didn't have time because he was being pulled back before the ball toward a receiver and that's to the credit of the strong grip of Andre Townsend the tackle so far this Denver defense doing a fine job of getting pressure on both on both side a kind of quarterback who will dump that ball in a hurry and he got the heat on four wide receivers only biner behind both are fire getting the call from for ball on the middle he has a man and it's wearing sweaters first down at the main theme number 19 gets 19 and the Browns drive is still alive the Browns will try an attack again this Denver defense with frothing patterns over the middle they're looking for the good match up the speed matchup against the linebackers Michael Brooks 56 trying to cover weathers here that's not a fair matchup weathers just walked away from him to pick up that first down just inside the Denver 20 final minute first quarter 14 nothing Bronco in this binary nothing thereon greyhounds in again the fourth-year defensive lineman from Mississippi has had a big opening quarter the defense of the Broncos with two turnovers and they capitalize on both el late in the seal at 8 yard touchdown pass after an interception at the Cleveland 18 and after a fumble stop the cleveland drive at the Bronco 40 a 42 yard run by Jean Lange set up a one-yard touchdown by Cecil 15 minutes long Denver in early control with a 14-nothing lead and of course already we know that it'll be the Washington Redskins in San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium on Super Bowl Sunday Bernie Kosar showing the poise that we've heard about all season long he has tremendous confidence and has the confidence of his teammates this is a team with experience they've been behind it come back but I've got to tell you one thing he's facing a Denver defense that gets tougher when they have a lead they're not afraid to gamble more and more and go Collier I'll tell you you hate to go up against this guy when he's got about 14 points on the board ahead of you Marty Schottenheimer says Joe Collier he could have been a detective he's just always pursuing more information now down in the noise the end of the stadium that game ten into the platform nothing much there for Ozzie Newsome dig into Martines the cover man Gilbert applying pressure on Kosar whose sidearm for two yards third and bullet a short heat [Music] [Applause] we talked about what the noise factor does to the quarterback it also dick makes it difficult for the defense to call their defensive audibles something we don't often think about that blue sky in the orange almost the colors of the Broncos [Applause] only minor and he's right behind Koga down the middle incomplete flag down langhorne the intended receiver the flag is down on the near side in an area that we would expect to see there a holding call or an illegal bump call that's it that'll give the Browns a first down Dennis better be careful as he accepts that call you don't want to lay hands on those officials you'll find yourself off the field and they're carrying mic dab the center Cylon reporting on defense five yards first down Dennis mythical sea that heavily wrapped a broken arm earlier in this season against the Raiders and just returning this week after Mike harden suffered a similar injury a broken forearm last week against Houston and now the concern for Cleveland on their Center Mike Babb they've already had to wait starting guard Larry Williams Rickey folding their deaf offensive lineman went down year after move with Posie in the center and bring Darryl Haley in a tackle and William Frey women Williams has gone into the game bad leg and all and he has been a play by the proposed a living in the corner they had a rookie at center with clothes off that's a Miami Thursday jump through a sample by roland jones and it's inside the 10 a gain of five or six we talk about injury and who made that taco rule and Jones last week dislocated the ring finger of his left hand the joint came right out through the tin he just slapped some tape on it went back into the ballgame and is playing well so far in this ball game and take very lightly and the glove to protect seconds and five bum ba to make a min gets only a couple Andre thousand sixty one grape regen 71 led the charge what a challenge for a young rookie as you look at Gregor tozi had prepared himself to go in and start in their faith of Larry Williams at that guard position but now having to move from guard to thinner and painted thinking again I'll tell you that is a real talent and in for Williams to come off the bench with the banker courage down that falen offensive line Kosar having trouble hearing an internee this is an official timeout we've seen it all year just to be commonplace throughout the NFL so annoying through this quarterbacks we've asked for a little help from the referee and in this case no chance to audible for those are who was at his best when he continues to play at the line of scrimmage I asked Marty Schottenheimer if he was trying to go on a silent count he said no he said we'll just yell as loud as we can for those inferior people and everyone else will have to go on the sing biner is open in the flat but can't they click that sorry hills old unit comes on Bernie Kosar wanted the end zone but Denver denied him a receiver there he'll just sidearm this ball out to biner but buying her feels the pressure he knows he's going to get the hip from Mike Dean mark Haines right there mark had positioned himself perfectly Reiner did not handle a pass and he's mad at himself he is a very reliable receiver but that one can witness Denis has gone but it would have been enough for the first down a 49 yard attempt by man in Cleveland the racist Azura on their side of the scoreboard that's 24 yards by far and with 13 minutes left in the first half at 14 3 for the home team empty the right choice welcome back to Mile High Stadium Lee Johnson routing that ball right out of the end zone and the Broncos will start from the 20-yard line enjoying a 14-3 lead with 13 minutes left in this second quarter Johnson more renowned for the strength in his leg at the kickoff man that has a barefooted punter did erratic but they are proud of the ways than punting the last few weeks Mark Jackson to the near side Ricky Mithila textile maker to the left a way out of the shotgun on first down introduced in the fair game if this season a critical game in the Denver season inside handoff the winder the food dick I think that's an appropriate thought in the sense both of these teams made adjustments early in the year it had to do with the Bears that have helped them where Elway it wants to shift to the shotgun to try and get away from the pressure for the Denver for the Cleveland defense was a shift to the bear defense that eight-man forcing front to help shut down the running game and it has really helped them to improve his defense that was after New Orleans away from up on the ground the things that be things definitely mate'll no way throwing that ball more than 50 yards on the fly the well covered by Felix right what was it that Marty Schottenheimer said yesterday that I was watching a tape of Elway against New England he rolled to the sidelines and he just turned his shoulders and fired the ball and it looked like it was just an easy pass he said 55 yards in the air and I said to run that back please he said I knew it was not fair the arm strength of Elway forces you to respect not only the width of the field but the length of the field as well always going only his second pass he's 1 for 2 burden [Music] cool first down at the 32 [Applause] a power pen that deep out you need the strength is a good powerful arm to do that and Elway not only has the power to throw that test but the accuracy to complete it Schottenheimer said he thinks always 50% better and he credits that drive in Cleveland last year into the making of this man's talent really bringing him up knowing now he is doing [Applause] the 36 yard line for for Mike Johnson made the tackle there's Johnson and played at Virginia Tech a couple of years in the USFL for Jim Morris the stars who want to cut those Championships Cleveland Brown team Ernie Accorsi done a great job of bringing together talent from a lot of different sources a number of these players like Johnson from the USFL come off the free agent wire they've done a good job with their high draft focus but I've really put together a fine [Applause] [Music] rucious Sanford number 15 slicing in to make the tackle there's another example can't be picked up off the waiver wire after we being released by the Buffalo Bills he goes out in a pan situation you see the number of players on and off the field for this brown defense a lot of situations substitutions that they bring Bubba Baker in there come from the outside Dave Pooley limping off he is playing for the injured Bob goalie Thunder those injuries looking to be a serious problem when you go to the second man and find him hurt really very very tough customer and looking at his [Music] the big game again last week and unpredictable flare from him to his folks but it makes the big play [Applause] [Music] for Johanna draw he's special first sound at the 46 and there goes the flag late hit Chris Rock ins came in late in the 37 and rightfully so no reason in the world to come up and make that kind of late John I think maybe one reason these Denver players are so angry [Applause] but put out of the game this game and that kind of late shot and even rape to the head of Elway and that will cause Cleveland 15 here's the after-the-fact aftermath as Walken pushes Clarence Jey Clarence came right back at Rock [Applause] what's December 37 added to the run 15 yards in first down there's the hit Elway obviously down that way pretty cool he knew he was going to get the flag on it he just got up and headed back toward the huddle rockin stays in the game first down at the 39 Denver leading 14 to 3 1040 left first half [Applause] underneath is an appeal who can cry first out of the 25 I'm a very critical factor and Elway gets a great deal of it here Nikhil coming all the way across underneath able to get open underneath the zones for Cleveland on that last play Cleveland defense like to play that zone defense on the first down situation because they want to get that corner back from into the roam support winder on a delay for sleeping plain Matthews Pro Bowler again this year number one pick out of Southern California there to make the stop dick I'm amazed at how well this Denver Broncos team has been able to run the ball against that their defense doing a good job of it look at the play selection of Brown obviously would like to run the football I'm amazed they haven't thrown more since they're behind and look with Denver has done a that is not a character week as they were way up on Houston they were throwing the football in the second half [Applause] if anyone that'll be five or six yards shy of the first down we mentioned right at the beginning of the show that Elway is not afraid to run that ball up inside if sometimes planned as it was on that draw a few moments ago this is just always reaction to an opening up inside he sees there's nobody there that little opening look how quick he is to dart up into the secondary to pick up the eb-5 yards and a former minor leaguer in the yankee chain the mouth fielder hit create a nose out of slide third and six the time again wide open appeal to the one-yard line that far from another touchdown crossing pattern are absolutely killing Cleveland theme but it's Denver's offensive line shutting down the path run letting Elway safe back in but have time to wait for those receivers to pop open [Applause] right into the numbers of material he had to catch that out of self-defense [Applause] and a touchdown for dealing [Applause] that caps an impressive 80-yard Drive by the Bronco twenty one two three [Applause] the Cleveland Browns wanted Denver to come inside and play the physical game they have and they're doing a pretty fine job with his jersey off behind gary Danielson is Mike Babb apparently out for the game knee injury and dave is early also on me they don't know if he'll return McNeil this wave that went out of the end zone touch the for Cleveland trailing 21 to 3 still working on pizzoli who's playing for the injured Bob Golic Golic named to the Pro Bowl and hoped that Cleveland might win today and he said somehow find a way to be ready for the Super Bowl you're obviously hurt when you go to your backup in that critical position and now to go to the backup of the backup if padule-- is unable to come back into this game they're strapping a knee brace onto that right knee it would appear that he will Utley [Applause] time for desperation yet for Cleveland but they certainly have to call on some resourcefulness clearly 21 clues bringing the binary gain of three Drake Dragan and on out of the way his defensive line with her place mentioned this is the tallest defensive front line in the NFL they make up for that size with good technique flag down as those are going for that size with a lot of movement and fighting people they're putting people they try not to figure that plate wrong one women and a lot of them are coming and they get him rollin domes that's pretty Gilbert a business rule until got their first they go wonder when they got their existence back I call him a crapper we wondered at how effective he would be with [Applause] at that time Casey Clark is back at the 45-yard line barefooted Lee Johnson the kit for Cleveland first part of the beam and he hit the Beauty driving Clark all the way back to his thirty-one Fontenot makes the tackle at the 32 a 58 yard punt Johnson out of his own end zone tremendous pressure being applied the funny coats are much more so than Elway has had to put up with but again you have to remember when you're up by three touchdowns you can afford to take the risk there's the sack Gilbert what's that there with Mecklenburg to assist Jones today Cleveland sidelines now and you got to look for something very special they certainly have to be looking for the turnover I think have to take some risk although you're not certainly out of this ball game that's Oh Oh my first down picking his way using his blockers we are four chances for the Browns to stop Elway very very close to that first down and you'll see Elway actually directing his blocker as he approached the sideline he said you block him in I'll go outside watch in here the first move is right there two quickness to get away from Harrison just a tiny place here I watch it here you see him pointing to the black itthere and sets it up on Harper that's number 23 Harper he said hey a little fake in sign and bam there's room for me to go outside that was Steve Watson with a shielding block Jim honey waving for his crew the chain crew to position whether this is a measurement of the obviously the Browns aren't happy with the spot inside that broad smile of Elway instead you know what I like about this game is it's fun I cuss on a day like today that's doubly fun because Elway has got everything going his way right at this moment are all Hairston another Cleveland injury not been fun for them [Music] meantime we don't know there's been no signal as to whether or not the hell way scrambled for the first down Harrison left the field briefly earlier in the game first down the end of that play Hairston will go over the top of the pile right here let's see if we can see what happened hit by his own man I believe looked like a need to the need of the hip for the stomach area Hairston moving under his own power but obviously a bit trouble and so often that happens when bodies are flashing around in there very often it's your own teammate who crash into you and do their damage Oh first down Broncos at the 43 [Applause] you click out of the blocks to the 38 play Matthews Mike Johnson to Packers for Cleveland and an injured Bronco Lange number of players on the ground I think an indication of the kind of getting going on in this game a very intense football game 33 laying with the football two linebackers there to put them fight on him he draws its crowd in a hurry a half minute remaining in the first half roll Denver 20 1 2 3 winder close to a first down let's go back a play before what's happening corner backs and wide receivers bumping around Minnifield on Jackson Jackson's throwing it looks like a lot rolling content of course Jackson's blocking on the running play if you see the very physical bump and run style of these Cleveland corners that was Benefield over 30 one hand for Dixon on the opposite side of the field the same kind of aggressive football Denver is fourth possession they score touchdowns on the first three of this first half and they've marched now at least into long field goal range and they have dominated ball possession you can't do many more things right than gender has done so far their fourth their fourth possession of the game the first three ended up in touchdowns with pointing itself for the area incomplete cool when inside no way through outside maybe realizing that the tool was well-covered a reminder to our viewers that we will be selecting the Budweiser Most Valuable Player announcing that at the conclusion of today's game now by this time the Vikings and disappointment the showered and left the RFK Cinderella season that fell one game short in the Washington Redskins in the nation's capital in celebration they're back in the Super Bowl a familiar spot for joke good spin here in the 80 [Applause] away looking for school it was Minnifield 31 closest for browns and a man matchup as Benefield goes against duel duel breaking heart inside and look how Minnifield matching stride for stride play matthews number 57 a good job of reading the quarterback and getting his hands up in front of that intended receiver in a field his cousin dirk now a member of the Boston Celtics Frank himself not a bad high school player grew up in Lexington Kentucky the University of Louisville where Mark Clayton and others with patima Elway once McKeon emotion that's the way again and priciest a flag down work it appears a hold and that is the signal against the mat against Denver that was a third down pass incomplete we'll see whether Cleveland denies [Music] the along field goal is tried of about 50 yards holy words often 54 is deploying 4000 Keith Bishop rich scarlet who spent this offseason doing a lot of running and cycling and a lot of lifting to strengthen his leg has certainly increased his range as a field goal kicker I don't know that Reeves would have had this much confidence in him last year but the strength in that leg has allowed him to reach further and further out onto the field 50-yard attempt his longest ever 51 imagine it this year Cleveland will call time you saw Marty Schottenheimer on the sidelines don't know whether or not he was waving off a possible block to temple whether they had to play in the works defensively there's a possibility that Schottenheimer didn't want them to waive that penalty off I think maybe as it looked like he was saying that's alright it's alright don't worry about it where's Marty is brought his brother and the coach the defensive coach the special teams party who was here in Denver and the real estate business after retiring as a player Marty Schottenheimer right there special teams of the Cleveland Brown team Marty's sports exploits at the time in Denver that was in the early seventies was he was a home run hitting softball player that I just got frustrated with not knowing what my life was doing professionally said one thing about football every seven days you get a measure for your read but he said I felt like I was running around and not really settling in him a real-estate business so he went to Joe Collier the defensive coordinator of the Broncos who had coached him they had been friends from long time back and Collier took time he said it was in the offseason we went through films marty was always a fine student as a player and Schottenheimer then got a chance to coach in the world football league as an assistant and through the ranks as a defensive assistant finally to the head coach replacing Sam Rutigliano we've done excellent and does an excellent job of preparing the team a week-to-week gary kubiak to hold a 50-yard attempt [Applause] that one no good wide left you take the ball out of Elwes hand and pass the opportunity to Carlos and perhaps save an opportunity the second gift the Cleveland sideline as they take the ball back and head off in the other direction first time that Denver has come away empty and with three and a half minutes remaining Marty Schottenheimer recognizes how important the score would be prior to halftime trailing 21 to 3 ever met running right through a couple of tackles and he's to the 46 yard line for all Mecklenburg and Dennis Smith finally wrapped him up Kappa gak showing you some Pro Bowl form there he lowered his shoulder and mark Haines thought he was going to go head to head watch him here he'll dip the shoulder a taint comes up and then go over the top dips the shoulder and then lifts over the top keeps his balance or that is a beautiful piece of running they're green of the Redskins would have appreciated that every one of 14 yards in a first down out of Webster slaughter his first catch of the game good for 9 to the Denver 45 one of the things that costar has not been able to do is get his team into a rhythm today one of the things they do best timing pattern that's what this is the ball in the air Webster coming back and of course making the catch quite a first down but at least moving down the field getting something going here Webster who was second to Brian Brennan on the year with forty seven catches water from San Diego State second and 1 Ozzie Newsome incomplete not well thrown Tony Lilly was there for Denver so it'll be third and one in isolation you'll get a feeling for the play as Mecklenburg dropped back odd they got one hand on it but not two and so they'll tough it into throw through that zone we got that linebacker fading back into the gap had to be a perfect toss and wasn't finer stop he didn't make it Rickey Hundley fill the hole this is early in the game to have critical choices like this but Schottenheimer faced with a tough one here going to be short it will be fourth in less than a yard I would believe that he's going to have to go ahead and take the risk I asked him yesterday to the folks change his coaching style and except greater risk he said the situation sometimes dictates that it sticks a pin here and he's going for it on 4th one at the Denver 45 yard line with 3 minutes remaining Kevin match gets two and a first down Pony Lily made the tackle and that was really between Mac and Lily not much left to stop Kevin Mac should he have plowed through the defensive back concern though for Mac getting the first down I don't think he's looking for the homerun there he just wants to make sure they've got the first and ten hopefully to keep that ball moving down the field to 28 to 27 and Counting down on the middle deflected and almost to teammate Langhorne it was slaughter and slaughter being pushed around a little bit on the flag he may be objective for that obviously taking a couple of swings felt that he had been fouled early before you can't lose your cool and Webster slaughter on a second year has really become a blueshift receiver making a mistake losing his poise and taking the swing water was only a hundred and sixty-three pounds he is a pimple let's see if we can see what made him angry here at Steve Wilson 45 working man on man here Tony Lilly I think he thinks that Lilly won after his head I think that's what he thought but Lilly went after the back of his hip cost 15 yards to the brown he's going right after Lily and Lily now that's what you have to do you can't retaliate in that situation where you both get the call Lily perfectly willing to take 215 yards and lure the punishment second down and 25 for Cleveland approaching the two-minute timeout of first half Broncos leading 20 one two three [Applause] a Mecklenburg working right in on the center now and then dropping off goes off the Brian Brennan short yardage he was looking down I don't think so I think they're going to call a fumble yeah Jeremiah Bastille Nathan hit we may see a review on this one [Applause] it did not appear that Brian Brennan knees were yet on the ground as Castile comes underneath let's take a peek at it know that ball is that ball is out before Brennan touches the ground with his name is let's check his elbow he has the ball i watch the elbow on which shift is left elbow alpha that angle it looks like the denim fumble looked like the helmet might have been on the ground first maybe we can get one more shot of that because I think they are Dean looking at it up there I think it's helmet touches first and I think the helmets time opinion with the ball coming loose well that way that may be reversed it because the helmet was on the ground now he's allowed to touch the hand down that doesn't consider that time considered a down fall but I think of the helmet hit Jack reader looking at that one and we'll give him a chance to to make his call instant replay was used 50% more reversals this year than a year ago 57 claims and the entire course of the regular year reversed and this is about as tough as you can cut it that angle looks like it fumbled and another angle looks as if he might have his elbow and helmet down I'm glad that's not my job now that's why in a way in this situation I was better off letting the guy in the field call it and go on with the game we're at the two-minute warning the official certainly in great position to make that call if he was looking right into the fight upon further review the play stands as called on the field recovered by gender first time and that is the two-minute warning the Broncos were there a third turnover of this first half Brian Brennan one of the things that happens to you when your team is behind you dry you try and do too much dick and we're looking at the helmet we're told but did not feel that they could reverse it on the basis of what they saw the co-star to the sideline sometime over there with Lindy and Ponte they've got to get their offense on track is Lindy a body effect they're talking to so at two minutes left in this first half the Broncos leading 21-3 have it at the 48 screamed the winder with a 42 yard line Mike Freeman a good block in the screen Mike Johnson made the tackle and Elway will call time with 1:45 left in the half Broncos with a ball and a sizable lead back to lure Daryl Tim's number 99 really a fine play by him that he was able to get off the block of my cream in the center but it may have gotten Elwes foot in his stomach and I'll say I don't know when I've seen a game with more players heading to the sidelines more critical injuries on both sides of the field meanwhile on the Denver sidelines Roulin Jones their star defensive in took a finger in the eye and we're waiting for report on that injury I left Steve Antonopoulos just to the right there the trainer I say we see MVP awards he may get the MVP award most valuable trainer 13 players Bronco players down during the season many of them starters you've seen how many players have gone to the sidelines for the Browns today there Steve Antonopoulos he's done a good job he's obviously concerned about the vision of Merlin Jones its left side getting beat up halftime Bob Costas and Don Shula will analyze this first half well hear from Joe Gibbs and the risk inside of the upcoming Super Bowl and fall on Ahmad will analyze as well but that a sigh of relief you thought the other day from gift it like it means a go away doesn't get away this time or does he whistle the dead and boy anchor in the graph he might argue he is tough to bring down Elway a strong quarterback and we may have a penalty there may have been a facemask associated with that that's right against Cleveland got neighbors now to have some word of encouragement honor perhaps a word to the official Elway again as we said early in the day not afraid to run up inside quickly here let's look for the facemask Al Baker number 60 there's the Hat being pulled to the side face mask on the defense against the quarterback at five yards then lice on the spot you turn to the lining it'll still be four down there's the math being cold Baker thought he had the sack thought he had the man in control always with his size they call it the Duke now factors John Wayne way swagger quiet style big and strong and with his b-47 cannot run many of the defensive player Andy this time no ever 91 Sam Clancy when you talked about the basketball analogy of Merlin Olsen earlier is Clancy a great player at the University of Pittsburgh Larry left the Panthers is there old-time rebounder and Jack the Terran the Seahawks drafted him as a tight end and Chuck Knox made him a defensive end before trading him and a half inch sleeve length or I mean uses that well in the past rush able to keep those defenses or keep those linemen away from him and force himself outside to get up till about here Leland apparently isn't going to call a timeout with well over a minute left that left 20 seconds go by and first in for PES well we'll just let it run and then Mike Moran will kick it here a little surprised at that they would have had the ball in about a minute and 20 seconds and said and it would have been exactly a minute through funny had they called time and said thirty seconds tick off and now there's only 50 seconds showing and Moran will kick with the delay of game penalty crowds only one timeout left and maybe that's the reason dick they would have taken their last timeout to stop the clock in that situation I would believe that the Browns have to go in and try and block this kicks they've got to try and turn the momentum of this game they certainly have not had the big play dropping their favorite so far Denver getting not only getting the brakes but taking advantage of them see Dan Reeves on the sidelines has to be totally clean of what his team has done in the first half of this Reeves in his eleventh championship game as a poker player said the ones I remember were the ones we lost [Applause] McNiel is dangerous and the courage of a little man he's out with a 38 yard line croc stop with 39 seconds a reminder next week as well having lost 30 seconds of time kozara starts from the 37 underneath the bynars the 48-yard line first our will be up which way 30 any Falls his last time out 29 seconds on the clock Cleveland will use their last timeout Bernie Kosar goes to the sidelines to talk with the coaching staff trying to come up with some magic that might at least allow the Browns another three-point Drive there's gary Danielson and the ball cap the veteran quarterback said I I have so much admiration for Kosar tonight I felt it from the very first time we had a meeting together a team a team he said I was about to ask a question to the coaches why would we want to use that play and kozara raw rookie raised his hand twenty-two years olds at wait a minute what's the theory behind this plate that I knew right then I'd like bozo [Music] those are really being tested today they think he is unflappable but he's working against a man who's been here coordinating defenses for 19 years Joe Collier man who posted the defended line here than 15 years and Joe Muro more the linebacker coat has been here with the Denver defense 11 years that kind of continuity on the opposite side of the field makes it tough on a young quarterback Dan rays came here he didn't clean house he kept those veteran coaches 20 million seconds 21 free timber down the middle for Brennan then complete Brendan had a step on the defense [Applause] Coase are trying to get that ball out in front of Brennan one of the small possession receivers who and so productive and dick you said it earlier in our conversation except for the great drive by Elle away Brennan would have been a hero of last year's game between these two teams with a catch that put his team ahead final minute to that volume at first in 98 and led to be overcome and the wind believe me they have been reminded of it in Cleveland they found a web for slaughter even feels all lanes that they can they get the field goal unit on they've got to be able to get down and throw a quick pass and freeze the clock is counting down I think they'll be able to do it all right about the fit around the new rule permissive and with four seconds left that allows Matt Barr and the Browns kicking team to come on they hesitate for a moment talking to that far as you see him come onto the field he has spent the year rehabilitating an injured knee he said I'm not yet back to the kind of rings that I had before the injury Marty Schottenheimer said we really are confident of anything he kicked out till about 45 yards well we're tucked outside at that 45 yard rain will be just a little over 45 yards he connected from 24 and this one really low good funny awake alive in a little while and so ends and all Denver first half [Applause] first three possessions for the Broncos two of them came on turnovers led to touchdowns and John Elway and the home field Denver Broncos leave at the intermission was an impressive twenty one two three advantage here just planted that seed in their head boy I tell you they have kept their eyes on that return since that day Havva Broncos only once this year when a head at halftime did they lose the game and that was to the Minnesota Vikings this kickoff is sponsored by Budweiser as we open the second half Budweiser the king of beers Lee Johnson to grill it to the far end Katie Clark and Ken Bell are the diekmen for the Broncos under three before [Applause] what the delay is at the moment the officials down on the phone chatting with supervisor in late now that it will not be a factor here in the third quarter well the turnovers the injuries to Caitlyn ground personnel in the first half Azula the nose tackle replacing gold and the silver bag were critical the bell moon returns to the 25-yard line John Elway the statistics not all that impressive if ever 30 minutes again was a microcosm of Elway season don't judge the man by his numbers they often lied now mystics do lie and of course much of Elwes value can be found in those running statistics he has run so effectively in this first half and in defending Elway you open avenues for other people [Music] now we have 30 yards rushing already in this big winder on first time double yards Sam Clanton and Richard camp 96 there are the official halftime statistics as you can see total yards fourth notation 160 for the Broncos 148 for the brown so it look here's to be close based on that but then the three turnovers with the Broncos gained and that was the difference and second mmm [Applause] woman motion the all-purpose back always been a throw to it and he's hit hard at the 27 to one of the many injured who returned in time for the late season and playoffs fractured his jaw against the Raiders we have a penalty flag on the far side of the field I believe they're going to call out in fact winder shaking his head over there don't know whether he was in motion moving up too quick what will let it Jim Thome holding would you carry offense ten-yard he'll settle down winder who has led the Broncos in each of the last five years in rushing at 741 yards this year Denver not getting the benefit of their usual field position here and I'm sure Cleveland hoping to shut them down here get good field position for folks are in the office to the shotgun goes away at his own sixteen Center screen the winder down at the 24-yard line Mike Johnson makes still another tackle along with Eddie Johnson not related Eddie Johnson's wife Ramona who was a star shortstop on the Georgia State softball championship for three years last weekend against Indianapolis he had labor cramps at the stadium during the game and then presented Eddie Johnson with a new daughter just before midnight lazuli apparently will not play the rest of the game on the sidelines I think he would have been in there to start the second half if you were to be able to play at all third and 11 throw away or that Cockington roll and in the throw down field intercepted feeling quite at the 35 tackled by school and the Browns have their first turnover might have been a cake and we tried to do too much Merlot John Elway finally making a mistake and on that Cleveland guide line they're saying well it's about time we got something on our side of Denver first half watch the Elway as he turns the opposite direction what this does as he spins away it takes the angle away from the pursuer and Elway again getting extra time simply throwing that one into a crowd of white jersey he does not throw the ball at family very often Oh Bernie Kosar and Cleveland set up a Denver 35 [Applause] to the 22 yard line and Simon Fletcher brings him down by the heels just as Mack was on his way to the goal line Felix Ryder with four interceptions during the regular season the right place you wonder why chemin Mack is going to the Pro Bowl watch him run with the football brings back memories goes great Cleveland pull back with yesteryear Marion muscle from Simone [Applause] get outside and there was Andre Johnson again is quickness getting him in position to make that stop more yards on the play Browns hoping they can repeat their second-half performance of last weekend different place against the different team certainly laws they didn't have to defend with this crowd right now folks are going into the trying to get it you see him communicating here trying to get the word out to his wide receivers six seconds down the 30-second clock for three who going for Langhorne touchdown whistling and capitalized [Applause] Cleveland contingent a fans celebrate the new here and since the silence in this stadium I don't know what it was that co-star saw but I believe he was calling an audible the minute he lined up came out the line of scrimmage under great pressure what's the dog dropped that ball and delaying horn in front of Dennis Smith 18 yard touchdown for the Brawn and Cleveland first four minutes of the second half with an intersection at 2:35 and then an 18-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Wayne Warren the cut into the lead mark a pressure from the defense ruling Jones right up the middle against Kosar he had to throw right through that defender and Langhorne who had a touchdown reception last week against Indianapolis at only one all year has picked up one each and these two playoff games he is the fastest to the Browns at 200 pounds they he can run a 4-3 quick 40 let's see if the brown pick up any momentum defensively off that touchdown early in the third quarter Johnson hits a pie can bail will not run it out that will give us a chance on a touch - to go back to the touchdown a chance to watch Langhorne he just going to bring it right down the field and cut it in front here's Rulon Jones commander bring to pressure up the middle watch the play as it developed good job of co-star staying there and they're able to get it over the secondary over the safety who did not react well to that football at ball thrown in a place where Dennis Smith could not get through way more they get his hands on it either so from the 20 Elway starts out of the shotgun first down right on the money Mark Jackson five nine amigos dos amigos today with Vance Johnson in the hospital rooting for his team and were those who were really concerned that Denver would be handicapped and indeed they are they do miss the big plays skills advanced Jackson our Vance Johnson but with Jackson and his speed with the teal on the other side and his speed it's not like they don't have to cook receivers double sign in with stay on the right side and Mosley now in motion from the way an blocker though it doesn't work that time is Reggie camp submarining with help and that may not be a first down they needed only a yard first round Cornell Cleveland defense stiffening up third and inches so important here to get Denver stop not to allow them the kind of long drive the kind of a half sneak in this situation at this time easily four-lane but a flag goes down right in the center of the pile and the Browns say they saw hold let's see if that's what the officials called Rallos an interception then a key penalty subtly things that we're breaking all the Denver way go for clay holding off on number 62 Kenya are Tilford up my cream in the center it looked like one of those plays where Freeman just draft number 99 Tim and pulls him backwards you see them they're just grabbing and pulling him backwards away from the line of scrimmage very often that is not seen but this position will happen they write the right spot they just apply again and at the ball they're not going way through that hole they might have overlooked so third and ten and a half Elway runs into his own man and finally throws it complete the Jackson go get the first down and more even go [Music] it matches his number and he did much of it himself so this a little comeback pattern looking for the first sound the longest touchdown play in postseason history pirate set yesterday [Music] he feared most about ly with the unknown he said you can do everything right defensively and he can still come back and kill you well that illustrates the point beautiful Karlis for the extra point to make a 28 to 10 it appeared that they were going to sack John Elway and all a sudden it's going the other direction they always first seven completions for seventy could have made that play he runs away from traffic runs into his own man look at the scrambling capability of the quarterback Elway the offense of where the opening is and even with the bump running into his own man so quick and finding a man open finding Jackson to getting the ball two missed tackles the first by Harper the second by Wright and then it's just a shake a matter of speed down the sideline and a touchdown Jackson had just enough to get across the final strike he might have been running out of gas as he approached that goal I that is a long run coming all the way across the field now right here if the tackles made by Mark Harper that would not have been a first down but Jackson's running ability frees him down the sidelines and at twenty eight to ten lead a fella who catches them right at the end exit has just enough to get all this over the line remembering his fallen partner advance three amigos Karlis watches the ball fall off the tee as they approach on the kickoff Gerald McNeal and Fontenot are deep where the Cleveland Browns put sent briefly that they were going to have an opportunity to tighten this game up considerably and suddenly when it strikes again the Fila to go out of zone the almost winter shot an amorous coach would like to see him take a chance on those lo long wins with his great open field ability now Bernie Kosar trailing 2810 takes the field there's a little better look at the shoes or the backside of Mark Jackson I'm sure that the vamps Vance Johnson [Applause] tickle to be remembered but he'd rather be out here I got to tell you that Devon Mac that inside game Mac and minor to north/south runners who gets five [Applause] dick dholak one of the officials on that long run by Jackson trying to stay up with a play blew a gasket and pulled a muscle in coach Jerry seaman with a referee in the regular season working as a fax math again for only a yard Jim Ryan Rickey Hundley collaborate rash of injuries continuing but this time it was one of those zebras that went down [Applause] the winner in case you're just joining us will meet the Washington [ __ ] 2:1 1710 in the game that was decided in the final second with a Vikings down inside the risk in ten and unable to complete a pass on the goal line twenty eight to ten Denver lead eight minutes left third quarter finer complete at the 37 Rick Dennison made the tackle luxury that costar has not had a great deal of today plenty of time to wait for the receiver to come open liner out of the backfield watch co-star look at the protection that he's getting on this particular play he's had great heat all day long minor just coming out of the backfield swinging upfield and then across the field able to get there in front of Rick Dennison number 55 those are wide open his langhorne and the saving tackle by Dennis Smith and that appears to be a breakdown Merlin he was all by himself but he appears to be injured he's bouncing back up he took a real shot in there one of the questions that was asked in terms of continuity that Denver defense is based so many changes losing Mike harden I think us hurt them and I think Dennis Smith the safety is a man who's supposed to be over there there he is but late perhaps a recognition air on Smith's part to bring him late into the picture twenty nine yards on the play first time Denver 33 seven minutes left in the third quarter Kosar the finer walk wrong Ernest Byner cuts down or was that a touch play by cosa we've seen the power game of Elway there is a finesse that's just like a little easy free-throw that he tossed up there and let's find her perfectly if they done the other thing that co-star did very well most amazing line of scrimmage he knew exactly how far he could go and how much time he could take without crossing that line to make that an illegal pass awareness oh I say that's a nice play for the Cleveland Brown Denver's defense can't afford to give this guy much room the extra point was six minutes and 50 seconds left it was a 32-yard touchdown Carli throw that a pass or even a throw does a little soft jump shot times with a great taste [Music] and welcome back to the mile-high City Denver Colorado Bernie Kosar with a delicate toss to finer for a touchdown and we'll look at it again right after the kickoff his lead Johnson as a teed up for the Browns he kicks it the Bell side of the field and he fumbles it out of bounds at the 15 yard line let's go back to the touchdown they can take their turn and as we watch liner from his position in the backfield that's going to work his way up into here and then at this point you've got to keep in mind that the line of scrimmage is on the 33 and watch how close post are come before he finally realize it releases that pass line are now moving away coasts are up about on the 31 yard line as he just looked that over the top Mecklenburg 77 linebacker there in advance to the squad he fumbled who returned the body will swallow someone or they can't get a 9 yard line the advantage on the fumble you can't fumble forward out of bounds for sets rule go and so it starts with the 9 yard line so close are stopping it right around the 35 line of scrimmage around the 33 and it was that moment there where mecklenburg within a dilemma in order to stop welcome me close our piece on a scramble and as soon as he turned his head there was minor [Music] the Broncos lead cut to 28 17 and it's winder no game look at it from another angle that touchdown Fresno's mine co-star would like to have gone deep with this volume I'm looking to his left but now coming up awareness knew where everyone was and what a nice play unspoken communication between minor and co-star to make that possible that's like when you're a basketball you turn you back on your man he breaks for the basket at old alley [Applause] [Music] the qilin motion and they throw to me peel incomplete we had to hurry because Reggie camp was on top of him the brown suddenly are getting some defensive pressure on Elway in this third quarter you really have the sense that perhaps it was too easy for these Broncos everything went their way in the first half here in the second half the Browns beginning to establish that rhythm we talked about it's something that they were able to do during this season when they get things going Kosar becomes much more effective the broncos seven came on at 80 yards passing Jackson and third down this is third and and his ends up down the middle and hit as Tony Botti had the ball but Browns waited for him to catch at a man 3 mins run at 3 second times a day that it would appear that Elway made a bad choice on throwing the pass Bodie not only well covered but there were a couple of Cleveland Browns who had a better shot at the football when he did like it they'd have gone for the football instead of the tackle he might have been able to intercept just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter and Gerald McNeil drops back to his own 40-yard line Mike Moran the punt he doesn't need much to get played on that corn field position [Applause] at two touchdowns on punt returns this year cold backed by penalty for Neal on the run and stop that's a 42-yard line steena that play was McNeil battling that torque plan and catching it on the run there's the play I talked about a couple of grounds right there one asset at the 42 when we return Kosar begins his thrive at the Denver 42 don't sit on the screen the Mac and good blocking and Mac has about ten breagan breagan nose tackle from behind in the Cleveland schema thing that is really a running play rather than a path they do not run the ball with a sweep very often but they'll run the backs out with the nice motion and put them that quick toss and sweep the ball outside Bob Golic that injured arm the cheerleader on the brown sideline [Applause] there with encouragement second and one books moving in the line and Townsend reacting to it question of whether someone moves fight the guard on that side all fairness oh sweet tea time overzealous picked up the five-yard penalty first down Cleveland dick one of the things we have not seen today would be the off so many offsides called by the defense against Denver's offense remember last week Houston offsides on defense six times as they were apparently being drawn or said they were being drawn by Elwes cadence and his motion a little concern from Dan Reeves here who feels things turning the opposite direction are looking for slaughtering tax at the 10-yard line if they step down at the 12 first down where that ball was hanging out there though very close to an interception Capone the other way by Woking water using his speed to run Wilson off and then coming back to the ball and that's what saved in here had he not come back to the football that one might well have been intercepted the slaughter on the catch first down at the 12 with four and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter and suddenly Cleveland threatening to make this a battle man [Applause] he was named after the truck eight more yards played at Clemson on the national championship team a few years ago nine five speed and a 225-pound body already have more yardage here in the second half than and all of the first half and they did not do that badly moving the football but the secret here has been good field position and the ability to put it in the end zone second and cool at the four Ernest Byner touchdown play lunch [Applause] buying her second score of this third quarter and the few Cleveland Brown fans tucked way over in the corner down at the goal line on the open end of the stadium are celebrating along with Bob goalie 28:23 the score [Applause] third touchdown of this third quarter for Cleveland Browns have come roaring back and you've got to sense the kind of confidence it takes from that far back not to lose your enthusiasm to have a kind of courage to put it back in the end zone we talked about the quarterback throughout NFL live and throughout the first half and he's doing um in barely living up to their responsibilities in their press clippings and now it's closed ours turn and the blockers in front of finer clear the way to make a 2824 three minutes 45 seconds left in the third we get set for the kickoff Brown says for 21 points in this third quarter the Broncos regulars in the season gave up 21 points or more only three times in a game and of a in 1/4 here the third until 3 minutes and 39 seconds left Ernest Byner is a money player money players know where the goal line is watch finer as he senses where he is Peters and that's exactly where he wanted to be dick we talked about the contrast in co-star in Elway let's talk about the similarity leadership the ability to lead their team to lift the performance while we are seeing him here today with under 19 minutes left in the game a four point contest winder maybe a friend [Applause] sixty yards rushing in this thing I mean that was not number 99 defense five yards and to the one before so again Sims to the 35 and Merlyn we talked about let's go back to the basement take a quick peek at it Sims playing for the injured Dave lazuli see him reaching in getting whatever he could to try and get the tackle get it stopped those penalties are very [Applause] [ __ ] off read well by Mike Johnson a gain of the Garter to what we started to offer Merlin was the comment to people at home watching Denver you never hear about their running game and it sounds as if it's an all Elway offense and yet whenever Denver throughout the season needed to three or four winder and Lang hidden failed them very often they're not that bad a running team certainly aren't any time Elway is back there with a ball in his hand the threat of the running gift of course that makes you think defensively and actually forces you to play differently than you would otherwise both Mobley and motion shotgun [Applause] wide open and Mark Jackson breaks another tackle and fires out of bounds at the Cleveland 40-yard line he's got that spin move down pat Jackson put a great move on hand for Dixon watch the move it Dixon turn drives him off the ball and then Wade's back on the sideline missed tackle right there and I'd say that has been costly for these Browns today it was a double miss tackle a pair of them by defensive back that allowed that 80 yard touchdown by Jackson just earlier Jackson 113 yards and he just put an all-pro move on an all-pro cornerback that great football we drop it they play offense Bronco first down protecting the ball for three lucious Sanford [Music] [Applause] number 50 with a tackle played at Georgia Tech replaced v banks at that position banks traded to San Diego they had hope that the rookie Junkin like jumping out of goop would fill that spot Duncan reported late was injured now they wonder whether he'll ever play that risking through a Fed I find last night no hotel we put the pins out of that risk put a new cast on he said it's a matter of time if they're confident we go to the end [Applause] early down elephone eclipse will pick it up Mobley with giant tied in with a first down leading to the 29 these are so is the Cleveland tackler Harper that is a mix mismatch Harper's 174 pounds and Mobley is about 274 Mobley has been described as a 255 pounds guard often used as a blocker but as a fine athlete let's see if we can see what happens at the end of this play loose just Sanford a hit there and there's the lake doubles up under under Harper but I still could not see what happened to Mobley Harper's Lake doubled underneath him as Mobley was pushed over the top and Harper's still on the ground Mobley is up apparently he's at least seriously injured in the case we have a timeout with a minute 24 left in the third quarter Mobley I think in in that initial hit from lucious Sanford may have injured that left shoulder a little bit that Harper was simply crushed by the size of although he may have opened that knee joined Efimova leading by four points one minute mark for quarters first down inside the 30 throw underneath and the Thule campaign much more difficult shots from Elway and good to hear Don Shula's comments at halftime for the great quarterback he has in Marino who can certainly done it but admiring the hands of Nikhil and others to be able to pull in those rifle shot Sevilla the Cleveland defensive backs worked out this week with a ball machine set to high speed so they could get used to those hard throws for Noah working out of Albuquerque at the University of New Mexico during the week would be on the same time zone and same altitude going for an appeal out of the field of play not a catchable ball and Minnifield really had the inside shut off the Colin skies only five nine if that but he has a 44 inch vertical leap that's almost four feet from a standing start playful watch the bump-and-run action and of course once the peel is out of bounds this time step out he's not allowed to come in and touch that ball the Minnifield stride for stride if after those two core attacks he is really a tough one to get open [Music] if they play for the food on defense and for Elway the ground abode approxima almost made it nine yards for Bodie on the broad of the shotgun dan Reid and Tenley field goal team that would if successful give him a seven-point lead Reeves though has a lot of fakes pumps field goals he himself of course in a playoff remember in Green Bay that IC game it was read on a halfback pass for the Cowboys that Dave Dallas elite they thought would win it in that IC Field in Green Bay or was that that was in County Peggy Milwaukee and it's a quarterback Kubiak to hold the ball 38 yard attempt by Carlos wait Denver leaves 20 31 24 by this ballgame Denver's defense not able to be as effective in structuring folks are shutting them down if they were the first half I tell you though the thing that has to break you is to see the number of players who have left this game because of injuries both coaching staff scrambling the people lemon and Kia Levin's on the bill reveal the only D plan for Cleveland as Carlos tipped it off by the second third quarter the old kind of return is when I believe and the little guys smothered at the 13 miss Andrews downfield and Bruce Klosterman at the end of the third quarter by a touchdown will we hear em we open the fourth quarter just before he came on the field Bernie Kosar and himself ready interesting Lee Art Modell when he traded although number one to get closer I thought he was doing was quite happy with his religion and his talents they start from the 13 a 7 point game clean the man and Haines was able to get through a blocker and grip him up there's no rush here coasts are so level emotionally and I think it helped him he just absolutely keeps his cool intact throughout the game you look at what he has done first happened second half how do you like on average they turned up the heat when you need it do it them four touchdowns one that touch pass to his fine a little too Newsome that's the way no flag Simon Fletcher did a whale of a job number 73 of getting that arm in the right spot to deny Newsome and at the end of this play Simon Fletcher almost payos one of his teammates back there watch it as Tony Lily I believe 22 watch flexor reach in the whites right here the ball is off his helmet I thought they collided no he took going in the ground he thought he had intercepted third down and four [Applause] the middle bynars open earnest Byner with him down at the 7-yard line and pose our fighters the men that Schottenheimer penciled in as his players he says oh the last two guys i'd ever lose going to trade and they collaborate again for a big Cleveland play the other thing he said when the going gets tough we want the ball in the hands of earnest Byner for wide receivers they spread the field they get the good isolation right there on Rick Dennison 55 and not a good speed matchup and bynars showing you how fine a receiver he is puts it all the way down 53 yards on the play 27 yards away from a time touchdown the Cleveland Browns Newsome inside the 20 Brian Lily with a tackle well this one had all the promise from an open up being a classic matchup the two best team for the AFC there is Broncos and Schottenheimer coach Brown Elway of the Broncos against Kosar and get it started not that way all Denver's 21 to 3 and it wasn't that close in the first half and suddenly it is on Cleveland's direction in the ground they're sitting on a chance to tie it second into a half yard Townsend Brian phrasing in on the play good play defensively Denver defense it will be short considerably of the first down they were able to put a lot of bodies in front Denver going into this fourth quarter with a lead they've won 29 in a row when leading going into the final quarter last time there were beaten the Rams in 85 Kosar 10 for 10 and the second half looked at 32 along through man what an effort by Kevin act about five oh you talk about running with power [Music] [Applause] not being and I watched him run right through and receive upon his play where there's one tackle at Randy Roberts 48 thicket tackle right there and finally fell for the DOE momentum a great forward body lean as you filled in play down to the 5-yard line 14 tough yards its first and goal at the 5 [Music] yard Riki hundred ninety-eight made sure there was no daylight don't Stafford offensive wizard with a Bronco these puzzles able to stymie the Cleveland offense in the first half but here in the second half Linda Infante and his Cleveland offense and spread the field they've gotten themselves into rhythm and they have moved almost at will against this Denver defense the 11 minutes fourth quarter tenderly touchdown Kosar Jennifer came in the second half hands off Arsenal in the end zone well covered by Hanes first pants that hit the ground for Cleveland the second half Bronson all was close to making the shoe stringer to sugandha feel as we watched co-star unloading that ball at the last second that was a great throw I'll say it right there where only [ __ ] you know had to finish with the football and he had it briefly the collision with the ground away third and goal more wide receivers underneath the corner for a touchdown we talked about the similarities in these two quarterbacks great accuracy from both of them and that ball thrown perfectly on the timing patterns before the break and slaughtered takes it to the touchdown clothes are perhaps answering what can we do to answer the drive of last year that kept us from going to the Super Bowl we got to put a good drive together of our own and that one was most impressive and 87 yards drive this took high 31 apiece [Applause] [Music] watch how accurately that ball is thrown the ball in the air right there and the timing pattern thrown down and away where only the receiver had a shot at that football [Music] Webster slaughter cut sound time grab not unlike mark Jackson's catch on a similar pattern that ended that first and ninety-eight Drive of bender the Hyatt in Cleveland a year ago and were tied at 31 with him 45 left him for the twenty here's the time touch them let's watch Curtiss mother's on the outside here's the man right here who will go inside to open things that Claire's weather's now watch the little hesitation here and then the drive inside by slaughter the Webster Webster we'll just wait until the area is clear and then as soon as he can drive inside the fall is in the air well that is pretty execution Oh it had the holy until now [Applause] looking for soon said goes to Mark Jackson and he has a first down at the 40 food as Denver's Elway trying to answer Cleveland Kosar and it was Elway last year in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium who capped that remarkable Drive of 98 yards with this touchdown throw to Mark Jackson that tied the game forced the overtime and again it was Jackson line on the left planning into the end zone a diving catch almost in the same spot exactly the same kind of path to the safe one zone down lower only to receiver could dig it out history does repeat itself [Applause] [Music] Mike Johnson with the tackle has really been a day for offenses to strut their stuff and to very fine defenses not able to slow things down a great deal borrowing over time were 9 minutes and 38 seconds from San Diego the redskins await the winner [Applause] [Music] cool straightened by David Grayson a rookie at linebacker from Fresno State number 56 great from one of those replacement players when they belong after the strike second half yardage look at what the Browns have been able to do Broncos certainly not shabby in what they've accomplished but huge yardage for folks are the Browns to bring them back into this game and how many teams could survive the confidence like that Cleveland Browns team has the first before three [Applause] Oh doesn't work stop in a yard short and the man who made the play is a man who is playing in the first spring position at nose tackle Darrell sim Bob Goleta pro bowler hurt his replacement today fazool e injured and here's him making perhaps his biggest play of the day as he gets a piece of Elway and enough to pull him to the ground go like I think on that sideline he's going to say hey come on over here I'm going to give you a hook he wants to have his chance of playing in the Super Bowl and he deposed that he can't do anything except fear on that sideline and perhaps helps him we've got to be getting awful tired out there after having not played a great deal you see Golic right there little support a little encouragement dick one of the things that happens to you when you've not played a great deal you really aren't in condition to play as much as Sims we've had to play in this game we pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network [Music] with Merlin Olsen mrs. dick Hamburg at Mile High Stadium in Denver Colorado 76,000 plus here the hometown 20 1 2 3 leave it happen in the second half a 21-point third quarter against Dan Reeves defense his Bernie Kosar the Browns came to life and after Denver had regained an advantage of a touchdown the Cleveland Browns have gone 86 yards on a drive here in the fourth quarter to tie it at 31 and Dan Reeves has sent his offensive team back onto the field at 4th and 1 and jumped inside of Cleveland Territory he's going to take a book interesting gamble Cleveland called a time they thought a pick was in the works and now here's that punt by Elway office not a good one coming boy thirty who yard go back to the timeout that might have been a very critical play we believed that Dan Reeves had Gary Kubiak the backup quarterback on the field and as a possible fake kick was in the works but Cleveland saw Kubiak and all time and then re settled for the push bunt which had worked earlier this season from Ellis home auto and life insurance you're in good hands with Allstate and by GTE but telecommunications consultant to Super Bowl 22 and Kosar hitting Kevin Mack over the middle out to the 37 yard line with eight minutes remaining in the game and one of the reasons why that play started before we were ready to complete our commercial message was it with the injury to one of the officials we've lost that contact I'm sorry completely very seaman referee normally doesn't do that that is one of his responsibilities as the referees in a different officiating position nevertheless second and five hoes are going for a final test water in the clear and overshooting whoa be welcome has water slipping behind him those are no lack of arm strength their fall in the air about 50 55 yards he is the touch passer but he can get a downfield we'll put it up high to do it as right hand side of here third down [Music] those are the second [Applause] Brian Brennan first down at the 45 Brennan was responsible for one of the turnovers of the first half as he fumbled after a reception little guy from Boston College - a title - Steve Largent he does have those large and tight booths and those strong hands he is such a reliable receiver finding the open spot good pass again by co-star dick I was watching Larry Williams on that play a badly sprained ankle he's in there with copious booth the Center for theta playing our hearts out again almost the entire game the rookie from Miami allah florida matt cut off by jim ryan played by Ryan smallest of the linebackers of the Denver Broncos they list him at 218 plays of great intelligence and a William and Mary the Dean of the defense and one of the things you notice being around both of these teams and great athletic talent but both of these teams obviously picking their talents with an eye to intelligence and of course the character look at those projections by the brown here in the second half what they've been able to do four possessions for touchdowns the game started Elway three possession first three tries eight four three cuts pain the Blitz is on and the long pass downfield is knocked away brilliantly by him Brennan had cuts down ripped on that one as he is risky but Martine saves it for Denver confusion there as Webster's water brought his man right into the end of that play unusual to see two receivers in the Cleveland office bumping together if you look from the reverse angle water will come from this side of the screen you'd be right there I think if he had stayed away but Mike Jeremiah Castillo number 28 I believe is the man who made the play and he would not have been there at red like a steel craft more than names responsible for saving the such thing fourth quarter 31 forward and 11 liner on the sidelines one fall great hand by the Bell sort of a first down at the 47 minor lost his feet on the sidelines still able to catch that ball was unable to pick up the first down and Denver's defense rising to the occasion here this crowd that kind of felt seated last week didn't feel like they were given a complete game room certainly getting their money's worth here today [Applause] LEED Johnson was tipped well today although not so welcome acquired from you soon quark [Applause] at the 23-yard line a 38-yard punt on the return five minutes and 14 seconds does that sound familiar wasn't it about that time last year in Cleveland when Elway and Denver's started on their two the place ticker for the Denver Broncos he missed earlier from 50 yards Nate a shorter kick anticipating his role Super Bowl on the line Cleveland 31 Denver 31 and the Bronco start from there 25 with 514 seconds left Nikhil at midfield [Applause] what a great pattern and what a great throw the peel one-on-one on hand for Dixon taking him down field the ball is in the air the field breaks to the sideline and there's the football well that's a great play again credit to often see the offensive line of these Broncos who gave Elway to time to get that ball downfield winder meet Sam Clancy and company you almost have the feeling dick that the team is going to win this game is going to have their ball in for the ball in their hand for the last Drive as this game has really unfolded with some Flair Denver owning the first half and the Browns really coming back that gets their licks in in the second half [Applause] going deeper Nikhil Felix right the beat man balled overthrown by the strong-armed elway dicta an observation in last week's game Denver Houston there were they were played equally as devastating to Houston at the plate that Cleveland faced early in this game we watched that wrong path by Elway but Cleveland seems to have a much greater confidence a much greater ability to bounce back from it especially at first half I think a fragile confidence on the part of Houston kept them from keep it from being able to come back in that game you've got to admire what Google has done but things once they're powerful in the first half to come back and kind of [Music] [Applause] seven for a percent the peel look at morning [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Thiel and Jackson the two remaining amigos getting their licks in today as you look into the eyes of Elway that ball you couldn't take it off there and handed any better to the field they spotted at the 20-yard line with four minutes and 12 seconds left the peel has five catches 95 yards I'm offended some confusion Elway step back to talk to gene lang rather than take the penalty he'll take the timeout so each team has spent one timeout in the second half come here to the Mile High City after our game NFL live rich Carles now Daenerys we asked him what he told his team in the Friday pep talk he said I gave my pep talk on Friday that I'm not much at that but what I showed them was rich Carlos's field goal in overtime last year I showed him that videotape and I said I want you to feel the joy you experience last year you when you want it take that into the game with you on Sunday well this may be the time although it's worth down at the point goodsoon [Applause] the Duke has delivered and it'll be Bernie Kosar with four minutes left to get his chance as Carlos attempt the extra point Denver 38 Cleveland 31 just a little screen for Sammy winder you let the defensive lineman go through winder hike momentarily and now winder does his thing good running of this tackle ere a second missed tackle in a field the second man to miss him this Cleveland defense has been hurt badly by this second a little blood walk right there [Applause] la thing we have the confidence to bring it down the field now post are gathering with his troops on the sidelines with their opportunity to bring it up the field last year Bernie Kosar hit thrown a touchdown pass to Brian Brennan at Municipal Stadium and the Browns fans thought they had a championship only to see Elway and D Drive 98 yards to tie and then win in overtime well codes are here in Denver the situation totally reversed he's now the visitor and he will have to rally from seven points down and we have seen he has the talent to do it it took Elway only one minute and five seconds to drive his team 75 yards five plays winder 20 yards for the touchdown that gave the Bronco one load brand crime ask for the American Football Conference reason [Applause] and the prize will either go to that man or Cleveland Bernie Koga [Applause] McNeil for the 25 [Applause] when you're a kid you grow up some 70 miles from Cleveland as a Browns fan you dream about certain opportunities we all did it argue put ourselves in the position of our heroes Bernie Kosar grew up a Cleveland Brown fan it said early only one year old when Frank Lyon was the quarterback and the ground football league title eating the Pope 2017 his turn to rally Cleveland up the middle Boehner and he has 20 I think that put PR I'm a flap that open quickly [Music] Cleveland continues to mix their plays around particular here in the second half and we talked about rhythm we talked about getting things hammering still want to play that physical game liner a physical money play they took a baby coming here got it outside of your own 40 building in divine ready Gobert number 9 the food of India during the course of the season army to come back I will book a wiki from LSU and helmet tackle at the 3-minute mark [Applause] we're on the field and they're sending me 30 seconds onto for those our energy for Quentin [Applause] cinema the first down at the 44 of Denver 14 yards on the play one like Marty Schottenheimer used I'm he counted enough for forgot there waved off the back Brennan working there on Dennis Smith they match up the gourd there click down beside that game last year second those are two Brennan again for the 24 yard line at the two-minute timeout Cleveland Browns are 24 yards away from tying it again in Denver the Super Bowl is next for the winner and the Washington Redskins in San Diego John Elway took his team downfield and just a little over a minute to regain the lead at 38 31 and now Bernie Kosar trying to answer had taken the Browns to the Denver 24 with a first down and two minutes left you know Merlin Sam Weiss the coach of the Cincinnati Bengals do head to face goes our twice adjust it like a tennis player it always gets the ball back no matter what you do he just knocks it back on your side of the net and that is how Kozar has played the Bronco defense today no specifics will give you a feeling for what these two great quarterbacks have done today we started talking about the contrast and the similarities but the one thing that jumped a true result these two guys are great winners what a pair of Rocky before the snap the charge by Andre Townsend he was called earlier enforcement decent and gives it one second five-yard penalty to the 19 the pressures of the entire year resting in the final two minutes of a game or maybe overtime or little thing can you possibly share with us what's going on down there you were there I got to tell you the one thing that keeps you calm as a leader like the folks are in LA and their populace in that huddle it's apparent that they don't take cars out there [Applause] and appears to have a first down or close to as Denison and Smith make the tackle Cleveland is not a trapping team but that was a trapped in behind Dan Pike six foot 7 inch 280 pound guard the adjustment by the moneyman liner just put them outside and picked up that first down at the 13 yard line 3131 Denver the finer oh he was lucky he didn't collide with that upright of a goalpost again a very accurate path and we mentioned miners abilities as both tensor and blocker and runner you've seen that today look how well thrown this path is well he would have been out and out of that end zone but with those kind of the three defenders right on top of them that's the only place that path had a chance of being the further second and member complete intended for Langhorne in essence a free down for Kosar on the right side it appeared either mecklenburg or joan eager to get across stepped across the line open up second and five with a penalty in one minute 12 seconds left with the word about this Denver defense the pressure from endeth on them right at this moment trying to protect lemon saving seven he said he was going outside at Berkeley you to come in on that particular play Dan Reeves on the sidelines angry well you don't want to make a mistake in that kind of critical situation but this Denver defense traditionally make so many big plays in critical condition down there their own goal line these are the compass yards in football right here go out a Byner earnest Byner Omaha mobile and Denver has recovered oh my or have a let's wait for the official son pilum there's a war going on to that stack there it is Denver's ball at this new yard Spiner has a first and goal and lost the ball [Applause] Denver's defense as I mentioned so often in the past coming up with the big play with the turnover gripping the ball what a what a heartbreak or finer who had picked up the first down who was ready to take it into the end zone Oh the air goes out of a Cleveland team Cleveland sideline [Applause] let's see how he was dislodged from the football as Denver takes over that's outside their two yard line and they'll be trying to protect the football [Applause] no way because that's the safest way now let's go back to the fumble Cleveland calls time with a minute and a second left a sane play we thought moments ago Jeremiah Casteel number 28 and reaching in to strip that ball away with Denver defense trained to reach at that football supplies try to force those turnovers and let the AFC this urine turnovers era's Jeremiah's steal doing what he was trained to do tearing the heart out of Cleveland often minor who had picked up the first down and fall out away from his body and Castille a reject from Tampa Bay acquired on waivers by the Broncos not only stripped it of recovered it and the biggest play of his football life mozar did everything right he got the ball to the man that they want to have it as we talked about during the course of this day or in his finer and he's still the leader even in this moment of tremendous pain those are made his drive took it down the field what we going through here behind right doesn't figure Elway will take any chances and all fried Raven [Applause] against the Redskins Denver did not play them this year in 86 Denver 130 130 imagine our friends at ABC would take a score about like that that's necessarily who would win but something that exciting and this one almost proved to be the match of that 38:31 and Cleveland denied on what would have been at least the first down at the 2 yard line on the fumble by biner going in to tie it up [Applause] to city's football phrase and how unkind it is for the fans of Cleveland again just flashing back to our pregame show Paul McGuire asked to assess this game said it's not going to be a blowout and after the first half everyone are shaking their head and saying oh yeah yeah he also said it would come down to a turnover the Denver would win this game by three points it won't be three Paul but that was not a bad fall last time out has been used by Cleveland [Music] [Applause] [Music] our director said Nathanson and our producer larry Cirillo will tell the story better than our words now [Music] [Applause] they respect lotta love on that Houston around the Cleveland sideline and a lot of fried [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Bernie Kosar had just given Byner a hug [Music] the presence of the leader at 24 that isn't the end of your football life you already have to start planning on next year you don't go over there and sit on the end of the bench and be alone now you're going to run the ship we've got to remember the great place that finer for me to get back into this at a Denver time this final minute now may not even need a final snap because pre-burn cannot call timeout or family [Music] officials of both I'm going a major for the first down was will stop the clock so one more snap and Dan Reeves will return to the Super Bowl the first time that an AFC team has repeated as champion since the Pittsburgh Steelers did it in 78 and 79 and won their third and fourth Super Bowl with that Gerald McNeil perhaps the most dangerous kick returner in the game will get a chance to return one or will have an attempt to block the take on way or another or Elway may decide to run it out go to the back of the end zone they could sapien has oh I think they more like to go in this situation [Applause] what is interesting is that Cleveland has given us the first law it won't be a McNeal return they don't hail them in out there 11-man out there this is hockey fancy the pulling the goaltender and getting the extra man on the [Applause] [Music] Gerber and he does it to make the film Oh Jason looking for left two more four three one for 3833 and the three people come from the 20 when McNeil will get his hands on the free kick [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the brown [Music] with a key weapon here in McNeal and of course Denver will probably avoid McBeal you may even see a pooch punt here with obvious until Sunday night programming plan I must be able to protect McNeal the clock will begin as soon as the foot touches the football for those eight seconds those precious vinyl records relieve Cleveland Brown will evaporate quickly now look there's a penalty at the 1 play chance for Cleveland [Applause] 38:33 denver's all of this drama set up by Ernest Byner stumbled at the two yardline with Cleveland going in for a possible time textile or turnovers - one will be a breeze specific they're going to give Mikaela chance Wow it did not start with a kick but when Lee ball was caught one second used had that bulb in a short plantain affair cat then you're allowed a free-kick and put the purse the field goal wouldn't do any good anyway so those are got one desperation throw left I don't know if you've got enough arm to throw it all the way into that Denver endzone and I want to tell you there are some defensive back they're going to put a lot of yardage between themselves and Bernie Kosar I mean they're starting in about 20 yards in depth and they'll back up from there Denver was just three linemen on the field then a fifth it's back to eight 35 40 yards back they're going to change the quarter out of your picture than the Broncos you see he's all the way inside at 35 three wide receivers to the right almost requires a pass and lateral when I think back at all know he's got a bomb and Denver's Broncos will go to the Super Bowl for the second [Applause] as Patrick Boland the owner of the Broncos embracing his coat and for the Cleveland Browns dark Modell is 27 years the owner the brown another disappointment and the play unfortunately from the Cleveland side that will be remembered in a game of so many positives will be this one earnest Byner inside the pie looking for a possible touchdown he had the first down that would have been first and goal once inside that five Jeremiah Castile ripped it away and falls on it and with that dimple repeat a champion led by [Music] we'll be back with NFL live from Mile High Stadium and member last year he rallied his team in Cleveland to time and win this year from a tie he drove his being cool winning touchdown our most valuable player award
