Final Lap of Every Daytona 500 (1959-2020)

there's the white flag the leaders enter the last lap in a dead heat weatherly a lap behind the number 48 petty in 42 and beauchamp in 73 the leaders one mile to go in the final stretch weatherly is high on the track lee petty in the center coach have below him the checkered flag the race is over both petty and pro champ clock in the identical time three hours 41 minutes 22 seconds teddy and beauchamp both feel to the winner's circle both accept congratulations of the crowd in one of the most amazing finishes ever recorded in stock car racing there's the white flag one more lap junior johnson chevrolet is first under that plane johnson is coming around for the last time the checkered flag for junior johnson bobby johns is next and only 26 seconds later richard and lee patty cross the line in third and fourth position there's junior johnson feeling his chevrolet to victory circle after a great ride pontiacs are leading the field of 27 cars still running pants boards ahead coming up to the checkered flag oh larry frank slides into the infield and out of the way as marvin patch fields his pontiac across the finish line [Music] smokey eunuch the winning mechanic accepts congratulations with mixed emotions two laps to go [Music] the last last and fireball gets the checkered flag he has beat the jinx his crew is jubilant and roberts richer by over 24 000 wheels number 22 into the winner's circle 500 miles at an average speed of 152.9 miles an hour with autolife of the richest stock car races of all time the daytona 500 and here he is tiny lot and he'll be starting on the last lap so tiny lund is out there all alone and unofficially i've got him 24 seconds ahead of freddie lorenzen and he's got a good 30 seconds on ned jarrett i don't want to overlook the fact that nelson stacy is fourth and dan gurney is fifth they're two laps behind and then the dick penny in the 63 plymouth is in sixth place bobby johns doing a great job is in seventh in the 63 pontiac and then joe weatherly is in eighth but here's the guy that everybody has been chasing tiny love he's driven a tremendous race and you can bet that if he can just finish now his pit crew will get a tremendous amount of credit for the job of engineering they did here today the checkered flag is up and here he comes under the checkered flag tiny lawn has taken it and this really is a big victory for him the white flag one more lap to go and richard petty is still moving along easy and strong richard has one lap lead over second two laps over third and fourth [Music] the crowd cheers as richard petty in his number 43 plymouth takes the checkered flag going away [Music] richard petty rolls into the winner's circle as his father did five years ago [Music] and here comes the rain the caution light means slow down and whole position the track is getting slick and the spectators are getting wet [Music] the rain is coming down hard now and so the remaining 24 cars are lined up behind the pace car [Music] the faithful wait as the rain comes down steadily for more than an hour and then it's over fred laurenson is the winner fearless freddy finally did it at daytona he's the king of the super speedways with the biggest person stock car racing in his pocket the weather as you can see now is bad there's a yellow flag they're driving now on a wet track and they slowed them down richard petty is the leader we may have a shortened race here and now the white flags up one more lap petty as average look at the uh weight actually this is very dangerous here this amount of water on a racetrack can be very dangerous they're running probably 125 miles an hour without windshield wipers so it's difficult to even see where they're going betty's going to average over 160 miles an hour in this race but in a short race his record will not count the first auto race by the way was run on thanksgiving day in america back in 1895 average speed for the winter seven and a half miles an hour a great comeback for the plymouths they were barred last year with our hemi heads and here they are winning the first major race of 1966 richard petty who started racing by washing and cleaning auto parts in his dad's garage his father's won this event that he's about to win his second daytona 500 he's coming for the finish line he'll win over thirty thousand dollars in prize money and there's the checkered flag richard petty wins the daytona 500. send me a great victory and second place of course is kale yarbrough in a 1966 sport he drove a fine race and sick and third place is car number six david pearson in a dodge charger mario andretti guaranteeing no change in position on the track is only a few turns away from being the first usback driver ever to win the nascar sponsored 500. and he takes the checker under the yellow with lorenzen second james hilton third [Music] tier [Music] mario led 112 laps of the 200 rap race a sure record spoiled by the nine o'clock in flag the lead swap hands 36 times among nine men but mario earns the 43 000 first prize he's jubilant one lap to go and restrain joy in the wood brothers pit flake white tells leroy it'll have to be this lap kale has the steam though the margins one second kale averaging just under 184 for the last lap in a fantastic display of determined driving [Music] bobby allison was third david pearson fourth al unser fit right down in front of the grandstand this is one left to go the white flag is out and leroy's got a clear shot at flashback [Music] and there they go into the upper turn they're on the final lap about six pilots separate and here's where it's going to have to happen down the back stretch and leroy picks up a little ground on charlie glott's back leroy getting closer and goes close to 200 miles an hour here and leroy takes him garbo has taken the lead as they go side by side splitting another car as they go by at breakneck speed libra yarbrough has to lead on clutch back and charlie now will have to come down fast on the inside out of the number four turn he'll try and slingshot him if he has room and there's no room there they come by everybody standing and cheering the checkered flag is out for leroy yarbrough who takes the leap on the last lap what a finish pearson is still close he's right at the draft but here he goes he's taking his run at pete hamilton right here going into turn number three can he hold it he went very low there they're really at it now look out this is in trouble he almost lost it he almost lost it david pearson was out of shape almost sideways but he fought back tremendous strength and the white flag is flying beat hamilton as the lead traveling at better than 186 miles an hour a remarkable story for the young man from massachusetts and it appears that david pearson has lost momentum perhaps has lost the will to really try all out again though i find that hard to believe because he is one of the great competitors in the history of nascar racing we are watching two great competitors right here pete hamilton in the petty blue plymouth super bird leading and heading for the checkered flag and david pearson running right behind him closing into second place and he'll hold that position no question about it and pete hamilton has won his first major nascar victory the daytona 500 david pearson is second in the board and bobby allison third in a dodge and crossed fingers in the money maker okay the last race we saw here a year ago when pete hamilton won he'll want it in the last gasp and here we go for the white flag and the final exciting moment the 13th daytona 500 it looks like at this point it's going to be baker and boyce aj has made a great drive and richard petty is unable to catch him at least aj boyd is winning this last last drive he won't win the race he just can't put it richard is right there behind him and aj is showing him some speed he's shown to class all day long but petty the great southern stock car driver coming around now will take the checkered flag for his an unprecedented third date on a 500 triumph making him a man among men in stockpile racing and now for the flag in his 120th career victory as aka takes the right side and the white flag is up for aj foyt and he has been out in front running easy by himself for 109 consecutive laps so he has really dominated this race since richard petty blew his engine and went to the garage fox say that he's going to win at better than 160 miles an hour keith he'll be the first over 160 mile an hour winner at 161.5 miles an hour going in the old record set by leroyabro 157.95 in 1969. so this massive crowd and they've estimated it at 98 000 plus coming up for the cheers for the tough texan from houston aj he told us before the race he wanted to run it hard lead all the way if he could and he hasn't led all the way but most of the way and he wins the daytona 500 and that's an appropriate sign while on the track richard petty whips his number 43 under the white flag with one more lap and it's all his [Music] down off the high bank fourth turn onto the triangle and the petty blue flies under the checkered flag winner of the 15th annual daytona 500. [Music] bobby isaac finished second with dick brooks third aj point fourth and herschel mcgriff fifth brother maurice and a jubilant crew push richard's car into victory lane and there's a couple of questions still unanswered with six laps to go could baker have caught him if so would he have been able to pass it we'll never know but richard petty has just won the biggest richest and most important stock car race in the world and he's done it for the fourth time [Music] driving a very well-balanced race throughout driver the set it right at the top of the show we set it right at the beginning and of course here we're seeing it in action richard petty who's had more experience of winning in this race track than anybody else and there's the prize money first prize 31 050 second price thirteen thousand seven hundred and fifty and sud plays eight eight thousand seven hundred dollars big payoff as you saw flashed on your screen and the razer force run under the sanction of nascar and there's lots of action coming up for you down the road including the carolina 500 which will be run at rockingham and you'll have action at richmond virginia and the checkered flag is out here comes richard steady daytona 500 for 1974. the white flag one more lap and parsons will have the biggest payday he's ever seen bobby allison is running second kayle yarbrough third [Music] benny comes down off the high bank fourth turn for the last time today and on to the tri-oval right now he has to be all smiles as he whips under the checkered flag winner of the richest stock car race in the world the daytona 500. johnny bruner senior has always told the drivers white flag is out one lap to go keep your eye on the rear vision mirror he said it's extremely important i don't believe that you have to tell richard petty to keep his eyes in the rear vision mirror i reckon he's throwing out the window right now i don't think he's even interested there they go and they're coming everybody is standing here at the daytona international speedway look at david pearson he has moved closer can he do it he's going to pull out now he's going to try for the guy i don't know he's down on the inside he's but he's got the lead but there's a car ahead of them there's a slower car ahead of them and richard petty and pearson go high pearson now has the lead teddy tries to go back down on the inside as they come out of the fourth turn they only have about 750 yards to go oh straight away they did hit teddy smashes into the wall will he come across the start finish line he's going to win the race he's going to win it spinning as he i believe will take the checkered card no he did not make it he is less than a hundred yards from it here comes pearson pearson is going to try to make it across the finish line teddy has his car going here's he's going to win oh fashion he wins the ring [Music] it's unbelievable unbelievable because here is richard petty not more than maybe 150 feet from it he's got it started up and he's crossed the finishing line as well he did it he beat he beat betty parsons across so he gets second place but he's been pushed there may be an impression of the regulations there he's been pushed so it'll be interesting to see what the officials have to say about this but what a spectacular finish we'll have to look at that finish again because it really was a question of richard petty and david pearson really moving in on each other there in the most spectacular manner in the last corner of the racetrack [Music] the white flag one more lap benny parsons is trying desperately but kale's car seems smoother and stronger down every foot of the racetrack buddy baker in the ford 15 is running third another chevy 14 cuckoo marlin is fourth parsons can't do it as kayle yarborough comes screaming down off the fourth turn to put his holly farm chevy 11 in the record books as the winner of the 19th annual daytona 500. [Applause] [Music] victory lane is a coveted piece of ground owned by no man shared by only a few and for each it's just a brief moment for bobby allison if he gets in that well a little more than one more lap now coming to the start finish line there's the white flag one more time around and bobby allison will have won the race his brother donny somewhere in the pitch you can be sure is exalting with him buddy baker nothing but heartbreak for him as his car is in the pit and for so many others today for richard petty who was after his stick but after leading the race was involved in an accident in the fairly early going at the 150 mile mark heartbreak for david pearson here today and for daryl waltrip all of whom were up there for the lead for aj point was still in the hospital back on the lead it is bobby allison readying himself for the checkered flag you saw kale yarbrough number 11 in second right a pulling to the straightaway behind allison in third place now is ron hutcherson a lap down and fourth place benny parsons also a lap down in fifth place dick brooks two laps down the checkered flag will be coming out for allison before a crowd of more than a hundred thousand people and that's it it's all over after an exhausting traumatic day of voter racing here at daytona bobby ellison has won the daytona 500 here is kale yarbrough the defending champion and the current nascar national season long champion coming in for second place those are the only two cars to finish on the same lap again third place one lap down ron hutchinson the teammate of aj point gets ready to display it to donny allison kale just tucked in there when will yarborough make his move they flash across the stripe and white flag for donnie allison they're back in turn one last lap donnie allison is 20 car lengths back of brother bobby donny leads kale yarbrough by two car lengths they're one groove from the top of the racetrack and kale's bush oldsmobile stays aligned right on the back bumper of donnie allison they're out of turn two they're down the back stretch here goes kale on the inside hale makes the move he's down very close to the grass down he tries to shut it off tails in the grass cale loses it he tries to pull it back down he's side by side they make contact both head toward the wall they hit the wall and turn number three we'll have a new leader we've got them diving down into the infield now as we look for the leaders coming up the back straight they are in turn two in front of mike joy here comes richard petty he leads daryl walter by five car lengths five more links back to aj point race traffic waltrip closes but petty is up there caution is on the racetrack and it will be a battle back to the start finish line heavy traffic in three walter running right behind penny aj point is right there they move to the high side they want it past high scott richard brings him to the four richard penny takes the outside he's got daryl walter close behind two car lanes back to aj point richard penny takes it under the trial but he's got the advantage right now here they come to the stripe richard petty's stp o's mobile waltrip dives to the inside petty almost put him off of the grass and richard petty will win the daytona 500 the petty crew jumping up and down on pit road congratulating each other this daytona 500 has had it all donny allison kale yarborough crash in turn three on that final lap the 1979 daytona 500 is history and ladies and gentlemen the winner is richard petty engine going into turn number one oh and neil bonnett neil bonnett smoking badly coming off turn four it looks like his engine is about to go here's bonnet coming to the tri-oval slowing down now he wants this could be a blessing for him if he can keep running at all absolutely the engine is off he has shut the engine off it's gone bonnet just coasting around here at the end of the race what a situation this is where's dale earnhardt no way the white flag is out white flag is out on the field they are under caution baker is streaking around to win this race and even under caution it will be the fastest race in history here he is coming out of turn number four and after all those years of effort all those heartbreaks the daytona 500 waving like mad as he crosses the line buddy baker has done it but not without a heart stopper just at the finish as the caution came out buddy baker has pulled it off 200 laps completed right flag coming up one lap to go for richard petty who looks like he's on his way to his 100. i'll tell you i want to be there the day he went to the crowd up on their feet one of the most beloved drivers in the history of the sport going down into turn number two you are watching an incredible moment here is a man winning the most difficult the most prestigious stockholm which there is for the seventh time bobby allison assault win situation the sort of strategy is like sinking about a 90-foot butt to win the uh us open by one hole out of turn number four richard petty holding on to that lead like a hammerhead shark here he comes coming down seeking out and is he slowing down is he running out of fuel he's coming across the line slowly but he takes the checkered flag in the wall stan baron has crashed just at the finish number 22 barrett has rolled his automobile 24th running looking for his second win comes into the trial the white flag is out this is it final lap in second place now is car number 27 kale yarbrough quick word from larry you said you might be a little concerned about this last lap bobby has not been drafting right it consumes a lot more fuel not to run in the draft we just got him hooked up with the 47 cars 10 laps a goal but i think we got it now well less than a half ago ken how's he doing looking good he's pulling up on car number two trying to put the ruckman car a lap down in the final moments here it comes a sprint to the finish allison coming down and he's right behind rutland as they come to the line down the checkered flag about to come out and sprinting to it is upper 88. bobby allison has won the daytona 500 for the second time in his career defender flapping a little as he came across all of them gone very fast this week all of them number one baker there on the point he's got to be looking in that rearview mirror wondering where yarborough will take his shot now they're both brave and he knows that there's no trying to contain kelly arbor kale yarborough has one thing on his mind right now to take that shot they're in the back straightaway here comes yarmouth on the inside identical to 1979. baker gives him room and going into [Music] lap to set down baker and bill elliot came home in second place this is it the last lap of the great american race wild trip still deployed first yarborough in second the eyebrow edges to the outside back straight away final time down to the inside the move he loves here he comes up to the inside it is kale yarborough taking first as they get into turn number three coming for four down to the inside here comes earnhardt earnhardt's wine for second trying to find a place to run they're coming [Music] he's done it again thank you lord thank you lord crossing the line winning back to back at the first man since the late fireball roberts to win a daytona triple crown [Music] down for the last lap no one's been able to contain elliott all afternoon and one thing that lakespeed didn't need with those cars running side by side before they're running for positions too but he needed every clean shot that he could get to keep up with the led not gonna be able to do it yeah he wanted a bit of help too late now first place no contest give it to elliott battle will be for third lake speed is in second battle will be waltrip baker inside that third position there's lake speed right there in the second position bill elliott is on his way to his greatest race off a little looseness up in turn number three a couple of cars all the way sideways here they are coming back to the line and after dominating all day his crew out on pit road bill elliot wins the 1985 daytona 500. there you see ernie elliott dan elliott stands there just to left what a moment lake speed up to congratulate coming down white flag is out jeff godin into his final lap just praying and we listen now as that car goes into turn number one for a work anything from that motor that might spell disaster for bodine remember looking 13 seconds back now terry labonte from the in-car camera you may see jeff gordon win the daytona 500. you may be riding with him he's in the back straight away what a sensation man that's his field game on the right see that little gauge is flickering on the right-hand side of the dashboard with the f-100 i'm sure that's probably his fuel gauge pressure gauge at the moment doesn't seem to be there see it flickering there you go when it goes into the turn and it goes into the turn and he's getting mighty close see the needle's going down now you're riding down for the finish checkered flag is out and you are with jeff budai as he wins the 1986 daytona 500. has done it cbs camera on board the rick hendrick racing stable out of charlotte north carolina jeff gordin from shimon new york has won the daytona 500 parsons is closing now parsons is reeling in elliott with one lap to go he's 12 car lengths down as they cross the stripe two and a half miles remaining richard petty closing in there's parsons in that harry hyde car moving up ford in first chevrolet in second pontiac in third daytona 500 down to it final lap elliot's staying low on the racetrack he knows that he's just got to stay down there and hope that benny carson can't catch enough grab carson's coming right down on the racetrack with him on the low side trying to pick up that draft but again i'm afraid he's too far behind here they are for turn number three carson's still trying to close final lap last sprint out of turn number four the pride of georgia bill elliot screaming car number nine to bring it home and give ford and give the folks from georgia something to cheer about he comes across the line to win it by about 10 car lengths bill elliot two-time winner of the great american race out of turn number four here's bobby allison the two-time champion what must be going through his mind right now here's the white silk from harold kinder last lap parsons lies third texas terry labonte is in fourth neil bonnett the third member of that alabama gang back in fifth and those two leaders draw away of it davey allison coming after his father looks down inside as they take it high and turn number two back straight away final time to decide it all here this afternoon ah davey what are you gonna do he's got less than half a lot to do and they have enough lead and a belief this is going to be a battle between the father and son i don't think anybody else can pride but here he comes he's going to be he's down low bobby allison high davey allison find the inside move bobby allison holds him off they come to the stripe and the winner of the 30th annual great american race bobby allison davey allison his son in second judy allison estatic what a tremendous family performance to dave to spain our records indicate walter pitted on 144 same as everybody else but it had that same 56 laps to go if there's any magic in there it's magic that they put in before the race it wasn't magic on the pit stop he is drafting all around the track off anyone he can find trying to conserve fuel [Music] the white flag is out and trader's wife looking on she can't go that far on a tank of fuel that daryl walker can he's drafting trying to save every bit of fuel he possibly can [Music] in the last lap the interval is immense it's a question of fuel can walter hold out he can coast him now i think yeah he's about close enough now that he could coast across the start finish line and still win out of turn four after 17 years of effort the daytona 500 belongs to franklin tennessee's daryl waltrip he's done it he's done it second place at stake to the line number 25 traitor will take second seven seconds back almost eight the white flag coming down to dale earnhardt one lap to go does anybody have anything left to cope with the man black here's what's going to happen maybe i thought tara lavonny was going to try to move down and take over second place and if he does that'll just open it up for earnhardt to move away we'll see but naturally every one of them wants to gain a position whether it's for from fourth to third or whatever but if if they get side by side it'll help earnhardt half a lap to go four car shootout to decide at all dale earnhardt here comes that on the inside slopping back something is amiss here comes the field driving for the finish and on the outside it is car number 10 derek colts something to miss on the earnhardt clark coming to the line it's lavani pulling up and an amazing finish the whitcomb racing team has won it unbelievable [Music] and nicole crying a little bit frank cope's first top five finish his first victory comes in the daytona 500. and they're confident here as irving ernie irvin whistles by urban was slow coming up through the gears on the restart crew chief tony glover said he thought he hung back a little too far but every time the two black cars come past side by side that's a break from ernie irving's chances to win the 500. and there's trouble off the turn two bernie irvings my brother ernie is davey allison and dalen hunt and davey allison both out of this race ernie urban racing back to the line with a big advantage there's davey allison's car coming to a stop ernie irvin coming down if it finishes here under caution it'll be the first california to win this race since marvin patch back in 1961 [Music] ernie urban's number four streaking across the line rest of the field coming by there you see the 22 car sterling marlin he is in second place joe rutman's number 75 is in third and right down on the apron any chances with anything here ernie irvin brings her around and the black number three earnhardt is in fifth position six is dale jarrett [Music] rick mast is going to finish this race in fourth ernie irvin coming to the line and will win the 33rd annual 500 at about 55 miles an hour thank you hand out and waving irvin in this surprising unbelievable finish to the 500 as earnhardt and allison get tangled up kyle petty on the back straight away back to the strike white flag and one lap to go to the side the daytona 500. davey allison in front and morgan shepard in second shepard stays right there he's closed it all the way down robert yates looks on davy allison's mentor okay he's back he backed off a little again to see how much momentum he can get he tried it the last time around he was able to pull right back up on his bumper timing is everything downhill that gap right there should pay off at the end of the back straight away if he's got the momentum to do it around michael walsh's car down for the finish going into turn three mike glenn what can he do it i i don't think so he's pretty strong it's just up to morgan how he gets in the turn with him here they come morgan down to the line davey allison first morgan shepard gets it all back there has he got anything left coming to the strike morgan comes to the inside and davey allison is going to win the daytona 500. the alabama gang has done it again the son of a great champion at this track bobby allison davey allison victorious in the 34th annual daytona 500. the closer he can get the bumper to the back of dale earnhardt's car the looser dale will get there he comes it looks like he's driving up under our north carolina got loose and slid up the racetrack dale jarrett zucchini and they touch they come back to the line white flag white flag and one lap to go coming back on the outside bone gets into it strickland gets into it this is the finish did we say five cars had a shot at it get ready because it's coming to the wire there's jared in front jarrod pulling back in front bodine comes down to the inside jeff beaudine the 86 champion trying to find some wrong come on dale go betty go all right come on i know he's got to the floorboard he can't do any more come on don't let him get on the inside of you coming around this turn here he comes earnhardt it's the dalendale show he's become off a turn four you know who i'm pulling for it's dale jerry bring her at the inside dale don't let him get down there he's gonna make it dale jared's gonna win the daytona 500. all right oh look at martha oh can you believe it way to go amen you think she'll get out of the van are you going to go get her out well that poor girl she needs help happy valentine's day mrs jarrett white play robert yates number 28 is still there last lap to the side at all sterling marlin stays first ernie irvin in second [Music] back straight away final time it's between these two cars as troy aikman brought sterling some luck we'll see can ernie irvin pass it on this last lap because he has turned into turn three sterling marlin in front ernie irvin closing ground here they come down the stretch for the final time it is sterling marlin in the lead down to the inside comes to 28. coming to the line sterling marlins gonna win it ernie irvin who left the morgan mcclure ride to go with the 28 team of robert yates is defeated by that team and sterling marlin wins his first winston cup victory in the greatest race of them all yeah the sixth ricky craven white flag is coming down the sixth score is not close enough to really make their face craving the leading rookie up in 14. this is it 21 cars in the lead lap and this is the final one draws away by about three car lengths cut it to two here comes earnhardt the intimidator will have to be at his intimidating best he's got him running for it but his angle i don't think it is either he couldn't get the momentum that he needed closes in coming to three sterling marlin stays in front earnhardt nipping away at him here first in second place trying to lurch out there launch one final assault out of turn four down they come the short 1600 foot straight away to the finish line and the winner of the 1995 daytona 500 is again sterling marlin morgan mcclure ninth career win and three of them have been here at daytona here they come for the white flag one more time [Music] one to go how about it see if we can bring him home well he's got to do what he's been doing block them all the way that board is running awfully good and like i told you in 1993 they'll keep her down on the inside don't let him get down there but he might try to come up on the outside coming off the turn here it is the dale and dale show once again here at daytona earnhardt trying to make move look at him switch back and forth jarrod blocks him one more time here comes earnhardt to the inside but he can't make the move [Music] and the chevrolets race each other back there janet hanging on down on the inside come on dale put her in the battle buddy do all you can winning two daytona 500 will be too much here he comes to the line and dale jarrett is gonna pull it off at daytona his second daytona 500 wins wow smearing him so much as good as he was the first time the three hendricks cars have nailed themselves to the bottom of the racetrack and right now it's one two three hendrix cars sterling marlin in fourth bill elliott back to fifth mayfield is in six ward burton seventh martin is eight and hamilton hamilton the penny car is in ninth here come phil elliott back on the inside off turn four in trouble there's trouble coming down off that banking one two three danson's car among them as they come to the line caution is coming out that could be the final laugh under green and if it is gordon has won with terry lomani second and craven third dale jarrett caught up and there you see kenny wallace in that incident brett boning's number 11 is involved and there's the number one of morgan shepard all torn up style of these two people the quiet one terry labonte the reserve conservative and jeff gordon the young and flashy one jennifer couldn't hit it better and they couldn't have hit it better look at how they run but earnhardt has a benefit there's a slow car up ahead and there's trouble coming off of turn two some cards get translated it might be this whoever gets back to the start finish line they'll get the fight and the yellow together blake speed and john andretti tangled as the leaders head for turn number three and ready and spencer got together this could be the daytona 500 bobby lavonny goes to the outside labonte up high earnhardt uses the left car of rick bass to the as a pick 20 years of trying 20 years of frustration dale earnhardt will come to the caution flag to win the daytona 500. finally the most anticipated moment in racing if john elway can win the super bowl dale earnhardt said he could win the daytona 500 and if he comes around under caution to complete this racetrack get it dried off so we can resume the daytona 500. all right the race has officially been declared final it is over so matt kenseth okay there is your daytona 500 winner in the 51st running of the great american race the 2009 champ matt kenzit that a backup car slipping through for the lead and now the victory in the rain shortened daytona 500 and r steve burns is down there steve this will be the white flag jamie mcmurray is in front to try to win the 500 this will be the last lap whatever happens now happens folks they can all wad up down here and somebody's going to leave out that makes it 21 a sitting duck right now but we'll see here that 22 knows how to win from that position that's where he won the bud shootout from edwards and gilliland down to the inside trying to anything should happen down in terms one or two three and four it's over three car breakaway junior tucked up tight under the bumper of biffle kenzeth leads to turn one final lap danny hammond in the 11s there with no one to push him actually he might actually be hurting those two cars in front of him if he gets back too far but here we go if it's going to happen it's going to happen pretty quick we've seen where the timing of where you do it is so critical hey those two cars the 16 and the 88 should be able to get by but kenseth if biffle elects to take the chance ford ford chevrolet off the final corner matt kenseth trying to win it for the second time here comes junior to the outside side by side with kenzik he runs out of time matt kansas wins the daytona 500. i tipped my head though he could have jumped out of line but he honored his teammate go now or finish second when we cross the start it's a race and oh by the way it's not over it's just now cut it's just now on daryl keep an eye on that car in the wall hard turn one and it's one of the big cars it's the 93 of travis nascar if the track is clear they will let them finish we are still green yeah mark martin is really pushing dale earnhardt jr in that 88. junior to the inside of great biffle the green flag still flies martin's number 55 keslowski in the two biffle backing up patrick behind him for the second time the daytona 500 goes to jimmy johnson five-time champion for el cajon california and his rick hendricks chevrolet he could tell he could fight dale jr for that second year danica patrick the pole sitter becomes the highest finishing woman in the daytona 508th they were coming at her from every side i mean front backs left right that group is a happy group and he's a happy man not only because they won this race since he won it in 2006 his average finish in the 500 outside the top 30. look at stenhouse net 17 in the middle back and forth he just shoved kyle bush right out of the way ricky stenhouse in the 17th to third place white flag with stenhouse up in position to challenge in that blue four you know what larry i believe that tape's gonna stay on there and that baby's going to come home a winner danny hamlin has not lost a race this week he's number 11. keslowski the 2012 champ battling back to the top and dale earnhardt jr the pied piper of daytona trying to hold them all at bay and kyle bush was trying to make a third line at the top of the racetrack oh here they come now this is where it gets interesting we've seen a lot of passes off turn four to the start finish line but that 88 is pulling away less than a mile to go oh we got a wreck third generation star dale earnhardt jr brings them to the flag checkered flag waving it's over it's earnhardt [Music] good job across now the caution flag waved before earnhardt took the checkered flag officially the race ends under yellow nascar a lot of jostling back in the pack the leader is going to make it under the wide under green legano harvick earnhardt boyer last lap guess what the race is getting ready to start off turn two it's all on from there on car smoking back of the field drops back out of play three wide big cluster coming off turn number four trouble way in the back but here come the leaders the question is are they going to throw the yellow are they going to let them race back seven eight car pile up in the back straight away caution keep coming just stay on the gas back straight away stay on the gas coming too easy here they say they say roll out of the floor middletown connecticut's joey logano wins the daytona 500.00 man you are the man ninth sprint cup series win for logano in his 220th start wow what a deal guys i think it'll happen off turn four here goes hamlin up high here comes the 20 of matt kinsen can't do it no he just doesn't have enough of a push he's going to have to back up to that car behind him and get that push but he's trying he wants that four car to help him here he goes next flag ends the race i just don't think he can do it from the outside get up to third maybe second i just don't know if he's gonna get all the way up to the lead but here he comes gotta run down the back it's gonna be a drag race off turn four but i just don't see him being able to pull it off he's getting a big push he's getting it he's coming he's coming he's sucked a second out of gas who else is going to run off well i think he's okay he's still going the 47 game get up behind the 21 give him a push he might get there but i don't know i think this might be kurt busch's day looks like he's going to come home a winner kurt bush has been the bridesmaid in the daytona 500 here they come off turn four for the final time from las vegas the 2004 champion of the series kurt bush for gene haas and tony stewart wins the daytona 500. wow wow first time he's won the 500. what about that he pushed his then penske teammate to victory and that's the only tony gibson are you there [Applause] he's too old to get that excited tony gibson grew up down the street from daytona international speedway and now goes to victory i love you guys thank you thank you almarolla moved on at the end of the season to stuart haas racing and he is a lap away from the checkered flag in the daytona 500 well he did what his crew chief told him you got the lead hang on to it yeah he's just got to keep those two side by side behind him keep working those lanes i like the inside laying the corner the outside lane on the straightaways dylan where will he go there oh alvaro around he goes and here it comes with the number three 20 years ago 20 years of trying for earnhardt he won the daytona 500 austin dillon wins the 60th running of the great american race got a car wreck here i think it's richard childress austin dillon's grandfather hell of a job that's what i mean you wanted i love it houston yeah you won it yes sir it is over you won congratulations [Music] one lap to go two connecticut yankees chasing hamlin and bush wow what a move all right and that's what he's going to need he's got to back up the priest he's not going to be able to do it on his own he's got to get that push for priests he's going to have to get on the brakes here but he's got kyle bush in the outside lane logano and priests grew up together at the quarter [ __ ] tracks connecticut and logano looks low top lane kyle bush in the top lane legato on the bottom mcdowell the second yellow car where will he go so interesting that mcdowell decided to go with kyle bush but here comes eric jones on the inside denny hamlin hamlet off turn number four no side by side battle of the finish this time denny hamlin wins his second daytona 500 and wins it for coach gibbs in toyota in the 11th car wow what a day for jd gives for joe gibbs for that whole team that's storybook stuff right there that was meant to be [Music] [Applause] [Music] white flag under green next flag will end the race and newman is there newman's got locked onto his rear bumper just like he did oh wrecking behind chase elliott round spinning around still green and here they come and here comes blaney ryan bladey up behind ryan newman trying to get him to hamlet newman backed up to bladey big run coming here to the inside newman to the front nothing denny hamlin could do what can ryan blaney now do here comes a push from denny hamlin oh this thing's not over yet not at all ryan newman off turn four for the final time blaney to the outside to the inside here comes hamilton up the outside crash into the wall into the air goes newman upside down in a shower of sparks on his roof ryan newman comes across the line fourth and comes to rest scoring unofficial between hamlin and blaney as far as who crossed the
