turns out as the referee full records of these two team Houston this one the tar son will receive that is going to be snow kicking off Devin snow kicks it off Earl Allen and that's and he catch him with a deep man on the ball is in the air it is taken at the five yard line by Allen I could cross the 20 and he stopped at the 23 yard line so it'll be pretty silent ten yards to go let's meet the Houston Cougars out here is the quarterback Daryl Landry from Beaumont Texas and a run the offense and that's matters from the full-back Raymont tape tears to put ball a great deal Larry Shepherd catches the football a great deal Anthony catch'em all trow fantastic Seaver Hills onions to tie down on the [Applause] both our team and make the tackle for Boston College [Applause] Boston College has not seen the kind of speed many came they played this year that they're gonna see from this Houston beer very very quick you saw Gerald Landry right there for five speed at the quarterback position [Music] join hop in complete and complete up to 35 intended for Larry Shepherd let's meet the rest of the Houston lineup now that's Gary - from Spring Texas Michael Horton from Houston bad choppy from Deer Park ray Rogers from Orange Texas Daryl's action from Houston [Applause] [Music] not enough of pass the 33-yard line bozer again dammit make the back of a Boston College early on here though we're seeing what Euston wants to do offensively with that beer is run away from the tide in and what the Train is set up here is the throw to the tide in Carl hilt number 84 he's a young man who has tremendous feet again another four or five type of receiver I have the tight end position who's outrun an awful lot of defensive backs all season long they want to get the ball to Hilton I got a first ten ten at the 34 yard line getting comes in the ballgame again he brings the play on and was moved by tape up to the 35 yard line Mike Ruth came in to make the tackle let's meet the BC defense now David Thomas I'd left them Scott Harrington from Westwood Big Mike Ruth he's a good one Norris on PA John boza already made a couple of tackles in this game dr. Rocky after the 39 yard line and again it was wholly in to make the tackle rest of the Boston College defense bill Romanowski out of linebacker Peter holy who just made the tackle is it a linebacker as well the Li time the Sonics runner Todd Russell is on Connor as well David Ferrara is a strong safety and Tony Thurmond he let the nation of intersections with 12 depreciation but Raymond Tate was not just about at the line of scrimmage [Applause] this is not a bad series for the Boston College defense staying in there this is a little track you see a lot of penetration there by John fossa and they do a good job of stocking the Cougars interesting area did you mention Bosa because they felt they could run at both so they want to attack close if they can Ronnie Stokes is indeed fun formations damaged 38.3 [Applause] I think you've got to give that man an opportunity to catch it there in some room and I don't think it did 33 yards spot with no return Calvin Morton is a man has returned two punts for touchdowns this year now in college football you have to give him two yards to be able to catch it the ball is coming down there is the Houston defender the ball is right there he did not give him the obligatory two yards that's the enthusiasm you're gonna find in the Cotton Bowl game and again the concern for Martin because he's been such a fine punt returner all season it was Gary McGuire the man who got to make the contact [Music] referee John McClintock from big 8 conference this entire crew it's in the big we mentioned the wind that was going to be a factor right now Boston College has the wind at its back now we'll see Doug Flutie for the first time this afternoon the Heisman Trophy winner who said all sorts of records during the course of the year he's number 22 [Applause] we're doing a football pump stick and the receiver without receiver was on the curb and that was his rung Matt Phelan well we was the excuse me we talked at the top of the show how the coaches were concerned about this astro turf field however they squeezed the field they said it was fine in warm-ups but here you're gonna see a result this particular field the Cotton Bowl field does not hold water well it has rained here all week Kalin was open but as he came out from underneath him there I think it was interesting that they closed the game against Miami with a path to failure and they opened this game for the past hour [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's what the point of Isfahan caring almost to the 40-yard line let's see the DCI fence now Doug Flutie from Natick is the quarterback thief's Trahan from Burlington as a running back fullback actually twice Patrick cares of all a great deal tell them I returned man as well as a receiver drier Phelan who is a roommate of Flutie guys get on his tight end and a good one [Music] by failing his roommate - a 45-yard line for 15 yards it appeared that the Houston Cougars here we're trying to play a little man underneath with zone deep it look like they're lined up in a three deep defense but again a beautifully thrown pass right here delivered by Flutie and gets there before the defenders can respond first intend the Eagles in Houston territory no score in the first quarter of the Cotton Bowl Classic trying to get that to dumbrosky let's meet the offensive line now booty thanks a great deal of them by the way John Ricca cheektowaga New York and Mark Bardwell Jack big no the coach's son is the center leave pepillo from Milton Mark McDonald from West Roxbury he's had a very productive second down he's had two productive every down as matter of fact but particularly productive on second down second and ten here at the 45 of Houston [Music] that secured it to the 41 neighbor the 40 meet the Houston defense now Alexander from carpet DJ tender and he's a good one from left Eddie Gilmore and Fletcher from Bay City dance hall Hawkins third down and five yards to go [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm very much News completely ruining with six defensive backs there and this is the situation that Boston College has seen most this year five and six defensive back a lot of formation Boston College spread them out this time they wanted to use their speed Calvin Martin who was actually open who had beaten one of the Nickelback's Earl Allen number four the ball was this thrown outside too much the features in the funnies averaged thirty six point five Willie lost this technique - jexy kick well he's swinging an arm is really wanted to go for a fair guess but he goes out of bound so it'll be picking their first sign of ten yards to go thirty yard punt with no return on the head coach for 23 years I've given in many professionals coaches in the profession rather thanks it for one game he's as good as there is in getting a team ready and he's been trying to get this one ready for BC he played his college football that army was captain of the 48 team under arrest Lake Attorney first down and 10 yards to go the balls at the 11 yard line 12 yard pickup on the play by the quarterback from a nice teammate the tackle Gerald Landry has been the forgotten quarterback this week but here's one of the dangers you're going to see when you see the option play again tremendous speed when he gets to the corner it's very difficult to defend this this time he was trying to throw the ball defensive backs had run back upfield and he just used his natural athletic ability to pick his way for about eight yards he got it again [Applause] [Music] Norristown PA came in the next attack on one of the interesting things Lindsay is they keep running to the weak side to catch him side rather than to the strong side they proudly feel at Boston College is over defensing the strong side yet Boston College has done a good job of holding and being disciplined and taking the proper guide and I think also trying to set up that pass to curl Hilton the tight end to the strong side second down and nine at the 23 [Music] we're trying to get this from outside Raymond Cape can't turn the corner he's the workhorse of that backfield today a common space to tackle there is Jack Vick now the head coach his son of course is the center of the theme he came to Boston College from man one of the interesting things about this fear in the way Boston College wants to defend it is mostly times when you when you see the veer offense you want the quarterback there carry the ball like when you play Auburn for example but this Boston College team is so concerned about Landry they want to see him pitch the ball they do not want to see the ball in Landry's hands very dominate guys to go up the 25-yard line no score first quarter write it down and it was roaming on scare batter they're down here was the pass that we were talking about they've been trying to set this up the pastor Carl Hilda he's are tight in number 84 is a large target he's six six they've had remarkable success with his very pass this week this year they felt because the linebackers played so deep they could get it into a crease the Romanowski kept the ball away Lonnie Stokes the lure the punting his long this year was 57 Calvin Martin is back here deep to receive it [Applause] Virginie makes it after 37 yard line so now the ball will be taking of a first sign of 10 yards to go 38-yard punt Noriko it's a 49 Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas Texas half the Cotton Bowl there is no score in the first quarter Pat Hazen what about fight so far well Boston College is about to take the ball for their second time both times in good field position and their defense is done a nice job with a beer there what do you think well I think Boston College in that first Drive showed a lot of open receivers and Houston's really going to be pressured the field of all first five ten guys to go at their own 37 yard line Doug Flutie the - filthy runner at the quarterback [Applause] he's got it [Applause] and it's triggered this on fear and it is a twist on Calvin Martin for the touchdown [Applause] [Music] so much my routine about the booty being tired uh there goes that theory the fans came to see Doug Flutie they fit him and that man has seen more than he wanted to see him bill yeoman [Music] devon snow will attempt the conversion 46 to 49 during the regular season officially that past play was 63 yards [Music] long drive on 9 second boston college has so many different types of receivers Kelvin Martin is their speed receiver user flanker he has caught 10 touchdown passes now 11 touchdown passes this season been their big play receiver again it's just a go pattern it is a mismatch there Kelvin Martin with tremendous speed against Greg herself and Martin makes a nice catches and breaks the tackle into the end zone but again this is one of the things that Boston College wanted to do they felt they could lull them into sleep with some short passes early in the game - Gerard Phelan and then come over the top - Calvin Martin number 82 and did they ever first big play of the afternoon here pulled off of the Boston College Eagles we're still in the first quarter the man who destroyed the touch John Lowe was kicking it off for VC by Allah let's take another look at this as you'll see here Phelan and Martin put out wide to the right and you'll see Phelan drive up the field and turn to the inside and and Purcell 21 turns to the inside which allows Martin to be open Flutie puts the ball right there still Purcell should head him down at the 20 yard line to make them go the hard way but a missed tackle made the easy score first and ten at the 28 yard line you know one of the things era that Houston defense does not see much is a great deal of multiple formations and motions in the Southwest Conference that's one of the things that Boston College wanted to come out here to do use a lot of formation use motion it looked like they got confused there well you know they were in a straight song and they should have had a problem yet they made a technical error in his execution and for tackling as well [Applause] overtime and fantastic effort it would be third down and 10 yards to go at the 28 yard line damn time seven here was 32 degrees here at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas last couple of days or ones it's been changing every few minutes but that's not unusual in the southwestern in Dallas this time of year the lights are on here by the way at the Cotton Bowl [Applause] third down play coming here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Bob Harrington got thrown one of the try captain Lindsay I think that's one of the dangers of the beer the quarterback is looking so close to the line of scrimmage the pass rush doesn't have to be very big and they got to him that time Harrington and I Lonnie Stokes toss back to ticket average 38.3 during the year and Kelvin might miss the return man sent me back around here 35 yard line artificial turf here of course that's the type of role and off the side of his foot gets a role in his favor however and get it up near midfield going to be a just about the 50-yard line a 26 yard punt in no return but gives the Eagles the ball at midfield we'd like to remind you that the NFC Championship game is Sunday on CBS for the surprising Chicago Bears led by the NFL's all-time leading rusher Walter Payton against the San Francisco 49ers one of them an NFL record 15 games in the regular season - I know sweetheart Kirby's against it 3:30 with the NFL today Jerry couldn't hang on second down and 10 yards to go Corey Stratford is an excellent receiver as well as a runner he's caught 37 passes coming out of the backfield actually one of the amazing statistics I think is the Boston College offense I believe just throwing the ball to their back 72 times this year Houston had only throw him to their backs eight times really the design of the offensive [Music] busted on the job I've got two or three sworn or by Doug Flutie he's five nine and three-quarters 176 finally you won the Heisman Trophy set the all-time major college career passing record the all-time major college career total offense record a consensus first gentleman first-team all-american selection UPI and Sporting News named him the Player of the Year recipient of a National Football Foundation postgraduate scholarship nominated by Boston College's a candidate for a road college [Music] [Applause] [Music] in complete says the official as the moves are made by other Macmillan on the football [Applause] one of the things that they Doug Flutie's so effective this year is the ability to get out of trouble now the first thing he does there is a voyeur rush now he's gonna see a blitz by you soon which they generally do not do much of this year actually number 95 TJ turn up flushed him out of the pocket but it was a poor decision by foodie making the stroll because Audrey Macmillan the free safety number 10 he should have just thrown this ball into the dirt or out of bounds stepped in front of it and should have the interception beef but I know in our time be thinking over there across the sideline market 22-yard finance no return it's on the 24 yard line Houston has the football first on 10 yards to go they trail by 7 points quarterback by Cheryl Landers at southfork Texas bill yeoman the coach of Euston felt they had to scored 28 points at least 28 points to win today and what I've seen so far today is they've we've seen a lot of inside running plays seems to me that Euston it's going to have to take advantage of the tremendous speed that they have get the ball outside on the option play second on play coming here or the history another way in the trommel is honoring the 25 and I think the II don't have it that person I think she'd make a real recovery up Michael what is outstanding year he has had this is been a big match tong choppy to set Todd choppy the center against Mike Ruth number 16 is tremendously strong can bench press 500 pounds there he deceived the ball on the ground throws the center away and makes the recovery we want to wish his father Tom well is recovering the hospital back east in Chicago Boston College teams all very concerned about him [Music] [Applause] 21 yard line look again that's the fumble one of the problems that Houston has had is turnovers you see here the exchange is not clean he hit the ball Landry hit him a little high up around the shoulders he never had the ball with the coaches of Houston felt the reason they were here in the cotton bullets they have not turned the ball over much this year second down and five yards to go outside the 20-yard line Boston College gun protection fat-faced back down to a two yard line McMillan made the tackle I'm gonna be a 1st down and 10 yards to go he picked up at 11 hunger on when you're a defensive lineman you're playing against a Doug Flutie all you're thinking about his past tasks pass you want to get upfield you want to contain him you want to sack him the next thing you know the off has the team runs a draw play right by it the defensive linemen will way out of position they had run themselves out of position and choice Bradford had a lot of room to pick up the first down they just brought Scott Key's coming back into the ball game to tie then he can be dangerous out here [Music] we're Amish on inside the ten-yard line picked up prostitutes too hon caring when made the tackle for Houston this is also the area to through the Boston College Fed they convince some of their own often plays down here they have not run many this year they wanted to run some and this is a very nice area to field to do that second I made at the 8 yard line Boston College leading by a score of 7 and I think we have 3 minutes 45 seconds left to play in the first quarter of the 49th Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas Texas [Music] that for the touchdown [Applause] I'll tell you what Liz do you really have to give Jack Nelson credit he has used formations all year long to confuse people again he has done that we seen it twice it's the second time we send the in shift people around the end result is the defense has appeared to be confused and Doug Flutie has found the open receiver four touchdown passes so he'll have a conversion attempt coming now it'll be Kevin snow Baylin holds for him [Applause] good 26 hours on foreplay is one minute 49 second got the ball by a fumble recovery here is the end result remember they had shifted two or three times troy Stratfor he's number 23 he's in the backfield right there on the left part of the backfield is going to run in the flat there's nobody covering the linebacker the outside linebacker has got to pick him up there or slow him out Doug Flutie has an unbelievable ability to find the open receiver he did it there and had a result is a touchdown [Applause] you know some players have that sense of where everybody is on the field I really believe that Doug Flutie has an intuitive feel for the game like no one I've ever seen well keep in mind that this is the leading passer in the history of college football over 10,000 yards and of course there's a good reason for it let's go down to Pat O'Brien thank you very much Lindsey might hear a lot of sound from the Boston College area they have had an airlift in here 22,000 people came in here from Boston the biggest airlift since World War two let's go back on to Lindsey Oh Pat they're seeing dark pretty they came to see him he's 3 for 8 86 yards and 2 touchdowns so far they can get off now he Kevin snow protect them take it as the 2 yard line by I say there's an Islander the 15 20 25 under the 30 35 40 45 what's good island go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the last follower couldn't get done [Applause] that comes back into the football game [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I'm very good enough got it now and Eminem the conversion he's one of the finest place tickets Galletti conference is a matter of fact in place [Music] without the tremendous speed advantage that used in hand you can see more evidence of it here a lot of there's a little hole there little crease and then he just kind of burst through it then he outruns people again Boston College's plays a few teams back me too don't see the speed you just seen the Southwest Conference row Allen outrun people that's the difference and that is a new constable record for kickoff returns the old mark was 61 yards Joey Jones of all about my guest actors of 1982 psychologically this has to be a tremendous look for the Cougars [Music] [Applause] can I get 14 this over [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's look once again now once again at the kick there are the most important thing about this run obviously it's a great one there's some pretty good blocking on it an excellent running of course by Allen as we see here from a men's own shot but the team's down 14 to nothing and Flutie really putting the ball in the receivers hands this really will motivate the Houston Cougars this could turn the game around a very very important kickoff the turn won't deprive you think me though the Houston had to call a timeout before they kick the extra point that Ruth or some confusion there they wasted a timeout that may cost them toward the end of the first half for the Cougars [Music] Dave Williams and Tyrone Taylor or VD to receive before the eagle 3:14 on the clock remaining in the first quarter [Applause] cool day and in second master 17-yard line the fair catch was it's all for our ferret I've been random Peverley Martha this wrong as a legal the call for access on the kickoff but then you can't run with it for a second because I was mr. chuka there [Applause] put it up in the air there y'all when the head coach of the Houston Cougars there with the cap on here's number three right there is Christian he had waived is on the exceed official at the top of the screen and you're allowed to do that you are allowed to call for the fair catch but you are not allowed to run with afterwards that's what the penalty is about [Applause] the lavash goes back to about 14 yard line [Music] [Applause] [Music] Martin Salem a devil to the right side for quarterback Doug Flutie Boston College in their heart for Nathan my favorite rapper but in the South about the 9 yard line by pretzel [Applause] a reminder Saturday many of you will see the wolf pack of North Carolina State tangle with a Wildcats of Kentucky and NCAA basketball those of you out west will see a pac-10 showdown between Oregon State and Washington a lot before on that last completed faster for the second time [Applause] [Music] that's it again after the 20 25 30 [Applause] [Music] 25 yard pickup on the play on the ground [Music] six-pack defense and plate man-to-man underneath and it's vulnerable to the run particularly the sweet a chasing men rather than the ball and you see an excellent job of running fortunately Randy Thomas number one comes over and gets him down launched back in the formation man didn't take advice to Hahn holding against Boston College this indication referees down forth untuck phil yeoman 23 years the head coach at Houston he was for seven years on the staff of Debbie Doherty at Michigan State where the student coach Atari began coaching after completing his career at irony so did the veer offense by accident you're trying to block a tackle and practice and couldn't get him blocked accidents I said don't block them next thing you know he the interior was invented and he stuck with it for 20 years I've been a very productive afternoon so for for doug flutie at both of him afternoons have been the two touchdowns and here's the shock information which they wanted to use more off today and complete up at midfield Phelan was the man Hassad to hang onto that running McMillan was covering defensively I was impressive the way how rapidly that ball got there Phelan just dropped the ball plea had it there against his own again Somnath thought that for half-foot he was a fella who saw the feathers of all out there on pathways but believe me he can zip it he can turn it loose he can get it down the hurry I think people are surprised by that just because they he's so small but he does have a very strong arm then they're gonna get a sellout a direct snap here if you figure what out Calvin Martin the master hunters intended know whether that's fun on the field his little slip because once again Martin fell down as he trying to get the ball second time we've done that right the same spot the feeling slipped earlier you're right third down and 17 yards to go Boston College leading by a score of 14 to 7 Martin failed under the wide receivers over to the right side having moved over the left side on that back by filling that concluded up to the 44 yard line where the second by Phelan it's like he's short of the first down no feeling is it does like 20 yard in route again it's man form and coverage underneath by Earl Allen number four member he's the man that returned to kick off the ball is well thrown out in front of Phelan but he came up a yard short of the first down 17th got 62 on fourth down they go into front formation it's going to be featuring defunding Lawson his back these two field it for Houston very catch signal Texas is office just up at about the 25 yard line 31 yard punt fair catch no return first down and 10 yards to go that's for 25 or just in that one minute five seconds remaining to be played and four in quarter of this game [Music] Pillman by the way has agreed to wear a microphone for us today and fill his Jack McKean l so from time to time you might be hearing from the coaches on the field we just want to let you know that [Music] right off this hand right off this tried to pitch it at 8:00 it went right off him into Thurman's hands did that Tony Thurman now a few tempers are flaring and there's a penalty marker down this has really been the concern of the turnover by Houston so the official talk this one over before they give us a decision that play was tapes fault really because he should keeping a distance away from Landry that's the whole principle principle of it but he came very close to it yeah indicate faith man yo arch here Landry elects to keep the football he fakes the ball to Paris and comes on down the line by watch how tape comes to him and he goes to deal a ball off tape should have stayed to the outside so that was a tough decision and it's also one of the vulnerable problems of the beer because you're working so close to the line of scrimmage and you're also playing with a football or there's such a young team there's 45 freshmen on this Houston team they made mistakes all season long I thought that Landry really should have pitched that ball there coach Hillman think so they're a year ahead of schedule because they are so young they really are a young football team in any case the vault is at the 15-yard line I Houston and Boston to listen now 53 seconds remaining in the quarter [Applause] and as a Russell Alec timeout Houston taking their second timeout right it really surprises me doc Vick now gamble the mini man left Jack Vick now see what do you think we got I can think u-turn builders often somebody huh well Barry Gallup is as offensive coordinator I think the plays already in yeah let's see if we have anything on the other side of the fear you don't talk much these coaches I guess Lin's officially that last turnover we are told was ruled an interception so that is how the ball change hands they're first-time offenders to go at the 15-yard line [Applause] the ball [Music] we kind of live in completely Passos the referee for a cell hit him just as he was saying it look well this is one thing that Doug Flutie has not seen much of this year he has not gotten sacked much really hasn't had much pressure on him but you see what the nice thing that Euston is doing is keeping Doug Flutie in the pocket put outside pressure there is nowhere for him to go and step up into the middle of the line that's good default that's also the worst kind of a sackful you don't see him coming and from the back what you see was not injured second I'm ten yards to go at the 15-yard line [Music] and just gotta get the Stratford covering restarting [Applause] watch here's Houston tries the Blitz Flutie but one of the things that they're doing extremely well watch the contain some of the teams that did not do this to play Flutie because we're looking at the second area right here but the key thing in this it's forced Flutie is forced to throw the ball over the receivers head he was open because the contain kept it in the pocket and kept in deep darren put his in the ball game again he is the freshman brother [Music] [Applause] time to get it together when they slide down the other wing of a fourth down Houston's doing a very nice job of defense a door keeping foodie in the pocket to putting pressure on him and they're also holding up receivers here Scott Key's woman the tie in gets off though the use of coaches his cell I felt that he has pushed off defenders to get open the that ball was thrown behind gzhel Munoz because to his excellent pressure on Flutie by the front five will have a field goal attempt here from the hash mark three more fight for Austin County they lead it 17 to 7 [Applause] two fine skills represented here today Boston College and the University of Houston so now first home with us take a look at these two campuses Boston College said in one of the world's most vibrant cities a distinguished University in the unique Jesuit tradition Boston College offering talented students the most exciting educational experience for a rapidly changing world Boston College a proud tradition a challenging present a rewarding future [Music] [Music] and then push back from there to the 18 yard line that's right outside let's go Brian Thank You Lindsey I've been talking to players on both sides of the field they've really had to concentrate on their footing it doesn't look as slippery or wet as it really is they say that the water is deep down and if you're wearing tennis shoes it's much of them are it's almost impossible to get their footing so they're concentrating on that let's go back upstairs all right Pat O'Brien first time 10 yards to go for the Houston Cougars at the ATM you know if that's the case do I really believe it's an advantage should Boston College receivers because obviously they know where they're going and makes it more difficult to react defensively [Music] Megan dies a flaw and hurt up to the 28 yard line where these coaches are high on Sloane hood he is only a freshman but they seem to think that he may be the best back they've ever had he's really come on four seconds three seconds two seconds one second and that is the end of the first quarter Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas Lindsey knows from with Fathead there at first again and Pat O'Brien completed pass intended for getting thrown by Landry take a look at the first quarter stats the real key there is the turnovers of course Euston had two of those to end 10 points have been the result of those turnovers and total yards as well used to has only had 33 and look at the time of possession they've both had it to 730 but Houston has not done much with the ball Landry in the air is old for five and one interception turn this sound for the city across the 35 over on it with Herrera reponse tonight when Phil Hellmuth says jerilyn you can really run again you get to see some more evidence of that The Improv to play now he's trying to get the ball to his tight end Hilton who has been their big play receiver but he's flushed out of the pocket by Harrington number 52 and breaks containment there gets to be outside picks up a big play now he's going to have to do some more of this because their offense just does not seem to have much rhythm today so it's gonna have to be some scrambling plays and find a big play receiver downfield he's carried seven times for 39 he got 16 on that last play handed that remark and they've got a little running room up the middle that time for Sloane hood carrying it across the 45 yard line that's kind of listening on Bill Gilman once again giving a 44 cramp l flex 44 time they look like shorter for trap surgery got counting but then you laugh get out of the way Frank looks like that ball coming right up the middle they felt they could trap Boston College because their linebackers play so deep diamond [Music] the 45-yard line terrify Raymond Satan Dave Thomas faith attack well watch here the this is tape number 33 with a reverse pivot on Landry in the backside guard pulls they get a beautiful opening right here they trap number 52 Scott Harrington and this is their starting to show a little bit of offense now starting to move football when I was getting brought in the next slide recruited to the 40-yard line romanovski made the taco that's inside the forty [Applause] second down and five yards to go now you mention dream until you see him carry the ball a few times today coach Jolin said he misjudged him early in the year he feels that he needs to get the ball in his hands thirty times before he really begins to become effective well you back in there for now [Music] our top 50 ketchup one more time we saw a receiver slip though there Anthony Ketchum was open explicitly open three three seven bootleg 337 bootleg never tell you on you again well looks like a misdirection from what I can tell he'll fake the ball and come away from the flow but you got a bootleg on because the receiver was open last time to catch him flipped again Gideon said he was open over 17 [Applause] [Music] Diddy's was right he was open he large oven he couldn't hang on this is a play they ran a little bit early on it's actually the second time number 17 Bernard Gideon's has been open right there in the middle the linebackers had gone with a boot action the fake they've been following Landry the quarterback he was wide open the ball just thrown away from him again he couldn't keep his feet underneath him but the ball should have been better thrown forgetting to catch yeah I was thrown behind him fourth down and five yards to go and coming in to do the kicking Lonnie Stokes that's tough have a guy wide open for a first down though now you have to punt the ball to Flutie every time one yard line it was such there and that was Shepard who was on field 38-yard punt with no return it'll be spotted on around the 1 to 2 yard line Boston College has the ball on their own to era far see again what happens now under normal conditions you would think you if they really got and pin back when foodies in the game there's no such thing as field position he can take it a hundred or he can take it by if it doesn't make any difference here they come but he brings them up at the 2 yard line the Eagles are leading 17 to 7 from the other [Music] [Applause] almost Calvin Martin well I want to say a Calvin Martin did an outstanding job there I'm just breaking up an interception and that ball really should have been intercepted by number 36 found Martin it's the man in the slot he's number 82 he's gonna break outside same pass he caught earlier in the game for the touchdown remember this time the ball is thrown inside poorly thrown Bowden number 36 is going to make the interception but Martin breaks it up and really makes an outstanding offensive play the ball was thrown 45 yards in the air against the wind second down and 10 at the 2 yard line not some urgent [Music] [Applause] for the ten yard line and when the mystic I don't fare of an interesting fall Boston College is moving people around and shifting people then you see the Houston Cougars trying to adjust and call audibles the next thing you know why they're calling audibles there's he conceives Trahan right behind him on a trap play a nice call picked up old seven yards this is a big play I think for Houston if they can hold here they'll force Boston College to kick into the wind and to get the first time get the field position third down and two yards to go at the ten hunters in the ball game [Music] with failing we don't see too many split ends carrying the ball but actually that's Gerard falen's eighth carry this year he's an again a wing position here a third and three cause a very interesting call when you have Doug Flutie behind the controls but it's a trap play we saw you stand run some traps earlier a big hole on a nice block there made by Martha Bardo on the left guard and a loud failing to pick up the first down good call out of the 15 yard line they have the first down flute he's in the ball game now freshman dr. Bravo 20 25 26 insight forgot there at the 26-yard line before you stop by Greg Purcell 11-yard pickup instead four times for 50 yards think of news on shot at if you see price crash was right here get the football a little sprint draw still see that field is pretty slippery all those freshmen is doing a nice gesture running first and ten at the 26-yard line [Applause] [Music] the hon for the 30 yard line looks like fleas maybe setting up the pastor's run the ball two or three times in the world don't see has happened once this year we've done three plays in a row if second and six at the twenty and I the second quarter with hypoplastic and disgusting [Music] [Applause] come on the tie down the master hunters been attended Thornton West covering the success that Euston has had defense thus far has been when they have put pressure on Flutie when they've actually blitzed him when they've laid back and played basic zone coverage full he really has had the time and found open receivers again that remarkable presence is ability to find those people let's see whether they go after him on this third down situation booty is 5 for 17 98 yards two touchdowns he's had a number of them drop [Music] mr. Phelan that's the 45 and filling his out-of-hours after 47 48 yard line when nobody was around gerard Phelan there again the confusion in the formation somebody slipped here in the defensive backfield he's got a big cushion there number 20 nobody around him again Flutie finds a way to define the open receiver now what happened on that play is it be shut the Thunder slipped and fell here he comes back into the picture here I couldn't tell who that was but he slept him fell he was eight ten yards away from him where we talked about the advantage the receiver has on a slippery field the defender is very difficult to react I say failing fumble the ball after checking it but he fumbled it out about had last possession so every day is retained by the 47 yard line he lost a foot or two on that one it'll be second I'm coming TJ Turner Canada makes the tackle I'm at Kevin Alexander Alexander the outside linebacker that time did an excellent job I think Houston's playing a pretty good defensive team they plan a pretty good defensive game you know he could keep in mind if they're going against the lead scoring team in the nation and the number two offensive team in the country back around 11 guards to go at their own 46 the Boston College Eagles with the football [Music] has the football but he stopped what about the 47 guys I've got about a yard on the play one more time he gets left in ER you said something very interesting to me about astroturf which I had never heard about it when it gets rained rained on it gets matted and a few it gets goes in one direction and you can if you run in that direction you slip and slide an awful lot that's interesting for one reason or another and I don't know exactly why it is all the Matt on the turf works to the east and if you're running down green it's very difficult to get any traction and we've seen a lot of slipping on this field third and ten at the 47 yard line [Music] that's odd that's inside the 40-yard line through 3914 yard another very nice Paul by Boston College you see Jack McDowell he knows those right this is the right audible it was man-for-man coverage on their receivers you see the linebackers running out to cover the back whew audible to a quarterback draw which is a perfect call against this kind of defense again Flutie makes the right call picks up the first down all the eligible receivers are a covered man for man except the quarterback and they expect him to throw the ball and he winds up as a runner [Music] that's our first shot first after 35 right line first Salome at the tackler picked up four on the play second and six we talked a little earlier about how Boston College spreads the ball around and that does make them very difficult to defend and that's why you I think you're best off playing them basically defense it in zones and make them go the long distance but they throw the ball around they're tight in their backs and of course to the wide receivers falen and Martin [Music] complete and five the 25-yard line Harper made the tackle along with Bogner another big cushion here for Gerard Phelan I used and I believe is going to have to play a little bit tighter on Phelan he does not have tremendous speed but they're giving him a little bit too big of a cushion doing bout the baton there right there not really there to make a play of another first down for Phelan that is a little bit too easy pick up ten yards on the play he has taught by for 61 yards half a line at the 24 yard line [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Houston County [Applause] Dinah's inches from the goal line I think they sell around the bar [Applause] on the ball just inches from the door line general take it first in town Troy Radford just dropped this ball he had a big gaping hole that he was running through it's another sprint raw after he catches the pitch he cuts back which is a nice cut particularly on this field it's it's Fletcher number 19 knocked the ball loose actually and there's there's number four misses at first and for sale number 21 now he may have been in the end zone though the referees say it's on the one-yard line that's a bad break for used in it that really is I thought the ball was in the end zone because I didn't think he had possession at the 1 7 minutes 20 seconds remaining to be played in the first half a 40 nice Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas Texas [Music] second and drop starts at the 20-yard line Shepherd commander heads for mamas I said I'm saying incomplete he was hit immediately by Ferrara so they simply say nobody has possession in completed pass bring the ball back to the one-yard line [Applause] the omens not sure about that bill you own was obviously not happy about a very nice call here again backed up trying to get the ball to a tall receiver use six three again the ball is popped loop that should be a fumble there it looked like he had possession of it and then fumbled the ball and recovered and that's what humans upset about well he made a clean catch on it no question in my mind but I'd getting this right in the next play out of the ends off to the 4 yard line with taste carrying on the play let's go down to what feeling left roll at nine it may be some sort of roll out fast as Texas dogs I'm from Los Angeles I'm not sure controlled at nine that's probably what it is to roll up third down and six guys to go and over the Baltic Shores on it across the 10-yard line close to the first down might be a shade short holy mate the toggle [Applause] I gotta take a look at this when the officials are going to bring out the chin and measure for the possible first down [Applause] joint forest I'm coming up hunting in it comes down to the field this is a situation the field where Houston hunter the Houston punter really does not like to be in Lonnie Stokes actually the coaches said he's the biggest fan of the offense he likes to see them make first down down one of the previous punts Boston College put a lot of pressure on but it looks like they're going to deploy for a return tell the nice baguette he's on 45 fair catch signal goes up and he makes it so they will start first and 10 at about the 47 yard line 43 yards pot no return College please justifies 4:17 for seven six minutes 19 seconds remaining to be played in the first half here possession first antenna for 47 yards on their own 47 [Music] we got through past the 45 to perhaps two point four yards on point miss Duncan very close the first time he's carried seven times for 80 yards so far Bradford one of the difficult things about playing is Boston college team that you're so concerned about foodies really sometimes you forget how good that offensive line is they're very good drive blockers and Troy's dad Stratford has had a very big year running the football as well push it across and the pit stops of all but did he have last possession has gone out of ours at the 23 yard line he had last possession so that will give it to Boston College for Randy Thornton made the tackle well that's twice now this Bradford's had a ho tough time holding on to the football but the last thing I like about Stratford here is his vision watch him cutback he picks up a beautiful block there by Bardwell and trapillo then has the eyes to cut back again the defender from behind knocks the ball loose but it did go out of bounds they're so concerned about the path to playing soft they're in the corner but those two big offensive lineman Bardwell and region on the left side came around and gave him a big hole for him to cut back monday pilyeon pick up on the play or stare at a path 450 yards [Music] we really have to like the place selection theater by Boston College we've seen some cutbacks we've seen some pitch plays we've seen Flutie deliver the ball to everybody as tight ends and wide receivers then they come back are on a trap just for a hand it's a very difficult offense to defend quickly when you're putting so many multiple formations and causing confusion on the defense they don't see that much Jenner the Houston team don't see that much from the Southwest Conference [Music] [Music] just turn the comment because Thornton wouldn't let him there's harder bonds at the 13 yard line this is an area the field with the Houston defense actually has played very well this year their past defense has actually been off of good coming in today's game they've only were only given up had given up a touchdown passes all season although Flutie of course is thrown for two thus far got a measure for the possible first down here and bring the chin all the way across as we saw a quick now along the sideline [Applause] cowboy Jack you know he was looking for horses just weak Lindsay he's a big horseman he is that and he's also a big country music fan western country music we all went to see Willie Nelson the other night he loved it had all rows together coming up at half-time we invite you to stay with us now because on my honor a year-end review of college football I think you'll enjoy and we'd have a little word about the totally players of the year well and visit with them and I first have highlights as well and the story here is Boston College 17 and the Houston cougar seven with 444 remaining in the first time the gospel again all right here we go 23 yard line in the past touchdown clearly the salient touchdown I've heard that before somewhere you're right this is a sensational fall on 31 and not bad defense either that varies in the tap coming Kevin snow is under attempted [Applause] fell on hold foreign no books it up that's good again this is a sensational call and it's again the reason that Boston College is so difficult to defend Gerard failing its third one out he's got inside position the defensive active he should never let failing get to the inside like that that is exactly why he was lined up that's Purcell has got to take the way the inside play one more look hit the fakes try and hold the top the result Palin's in the end zone for six more points five players 47 yards 141 it took Flutie with a 15 yard pass to his wrong they failing on the kickoff and it's fielded at the 25-yard line return to the 30 to the 35 yard line [Applause] returned by Peggy Tuggle let's take another look at this touchdown you see here Purcell should be funneling to the outside he has no Huff on the inside and he's got to make the quarterback throw the long pass over the shoulder this way there is no help on the inside Purcell had no chance right it's a more difficult throw to the outside over the top trailing 20 47 now the Houston Cougars have the ball first intended they're on 35 [Music] Martha hunt Hood character ball you know we still really have not seen Gerald Landry get down the line of scrimmage in a nice relationship an option relationship with a back trailing in where you can really deal in the secondary I think one of the interesting things that Boston College did for the preparation of this game because the defense must be disciplined to take the proper guys as they used no ball when they were working out they just made every guy go to their responsibilities and it appears that they've done a pretty good job with it on the defense it is first down on five that's five yards makes it first and five was for 28 left here in the first half used it only has one timeout to they wasted those two early in the first quarter keep in mind also that Houston has an awful lot of speed if they can just break one don't go all the way the library [Music] fixed up intercepted on the deflection by Russell touch 240 off the plane gets him from hitting the river in Suffolk more appropriately off getting back I think the ball rested on getting back and Russell just picked it off that's exactly what happened - dusty Gideon's he's at the top of the screen that's a slant pattern again he is open the bottles out in front of him and then at number 45 Russell he bounces right off getting back Russell's there to pick it up at does more bad luck with his University of Houston team very turnover interception Boston College of the ball first in 739 four minutes one second remaining to be played in the half there's the quick thinking my fellow got it inside the 40 yards on well there was some concern there on town among media representatives and others that's perhaps Flutie who had been interviewed by every man and boy Within Reach might be a suffering a little burn out before this ball game or during the ball game I would say that I haven't seen any evidence of burnout so far to put that to rest in me it's even more remarkable then because it really has an extraordinary schedule since the Miami game like a table at nine yards to go [Music] [Applause] Delavan life in the magical humming was intended to penally on the field penalty flag I should say looks like the holding area it is we got it again Spacey it really is important for uses defense to keep Boston College off the scoreboard before the first half again you've mentioned with the speed they do have the speed it gives them an opportunity to get back in the ball game if they don't allow the Boston sport even with buildings like this you don't feel comfortable with a guy like Flutie and then he can make up your knee so quickly quick what guns please left foot gun Queens left foot whirlybird then he says in the formations jack further my food [Music] out of the shotgun 32:27 you were right about the penalty Fela you're never really safe when you're playing against Doug Flutie you were right here right after the penalty Doug just finds again one more time an open receiver the shotgun formation gives them a little bit more time to do that on a a long situation Phelan finds that dead spot right there in the middle he does throw through between people I should say he doesn't worry about the height it's just bang 20 guys pick up failings caught 7 4 94 yards and one touchdown Girard Phelan 2:51 left in the half [Music] dr. Italian right football and dressed a little perfect incomplete let's listen to Jack break now jack is actually signaling in that's a Mike Wendy throw the ball guard signal formations and calls the plays its offensive coordinators and false employment Flutie is already tied the Cotton Bowl record with three touchdown passes here and we're still in the first half Ernie land of right against Colorado 1958 good exhaust I'm out so flirty cause someone goes to the sideline the clock says 237 remaining in the half Doug Flutie call timeout because the 25 seconds I could run down to what fat one second one second sorry Carl time to keep taking the penalty there will be a second down to ten yards to go at the 27 to 37 and a half busting Kelly 24 [Music] plus the healer Cindy offense stop down at the 29-yard line yell attacking another big play here for the use of defense it's third and 12 here with 221 left in the first half important here to come up with a big defensive play a sack on interception something that's going to keep Boston College from scoring before the end of the first half this is not the first time that Boston College is played in the Cotton Bowl they played here in 1940 and they lost six to three Simpsons enjoy try just maybe their coaches twenty-eight-year-old own fella named Frank Leahy [Music] through the 2325 10 odd [Applause] 45 left in the 7-yard second time here you know Doug booty it's come up with so many big plays over the course of the past four years college football is really gonna miss this young man beau he's going to pick up a great block by a receiver Sean Dombrowski number 44 comes in your screen right there and took out two defenders and flota uses some skill to get down to two yard line we are going to miss him in college football what a sensational player he is [Music] [Applause] I'm very tensed I'm coming now Kevin snow will attempt it's a little hole often good can they get 31 to 7 another look at Steve's 4 ha remember this drive this touchdown here by strong was set up by a couple of big plays by Doug Flutie we saw a couple of scrambles the big scramble down to the two yard line but again this is a new formation another formation that they've seen three men in the backfield for Hanover the right side over trapillo and mcdonald there has been a new contract signed between CBS and the Cotton Bowl and one of the great men in the history of not only the Cotton Bowl but college football and athletics in general field Stovall had some words about that and so let's see what he has to say I'm pleased to announce that the Cotton Bowl era legs association has signed a new five-year contract with CBS Sports we've enjoyed this relationship for the last 25 years and we're looking forward to the next five Neal thank your neighbor we've enjoyed it too great folks Peter field thank you very much you know how we feel about you as far as we're concerned there are no finer people in sports and the Cotton Bowl people and this is really one of the great games on New Year's Day we're delighted thank you Peter two-way rolls thank you thank you well I've been around here about 25 years and I'd like to say there are a lot of great folks on both sides of that contract we'll have a kickoff now from the 40-yard line Kevin Oh we'll put it and it's filled it again buying up at the 25 yard line and recent roster 30 its Tuggle that's the second one he's returned today at the 36 yard line his first and 10 sedan with 135 left here in the first half again tremendous speed by Euston it's important for them at least get themselves in a position to put something on the board where they've got an excellent field goal kicker and Mike Linden who said they're an outstanding year you need to get three or seven here before the end of the first half on the right sideline complete separators was the intended receiver second and 10 at the 36 landry is old for 10 and 2 interceptions but you don't want to this may sound ridiculous but here's the streak thrower he's not a bad freak right now but against the University of Texas for example he was only four of 17 but two of those passes were very long touchdown who would know better about bad stream out there on the way FC quarterback talking to another damn coke for those of you are not Jeff by the quarterback Landy and he moved it up to the 42 yard line dr. only Barrington 111 on the clock remaining of the first time and timeout is taken by Boston College they feel perhaps they can hold you stand maybe block a punt or force the punt give Flutie there's a chance before half-time [Music] they've enjoyed being in a bowl game on New Year's Day first time since 1943 they've been and we'll figure one on New Year's Day Salem the owner I saw it I think to the fact that they are ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation and a big win here today would doubtless move them up in the final liking very good point Lindsey and I'm sure that's going to occur based on their first half performance well you know it's amazing the quality of athlete Boston colleges have been able to recruit since Bicknell and Flutie have been there Vick now has said but the athletes they have there now are much better than when Flutie came in so he's had a tremendous effect jack dick now as well as all the publicity there foody has had you know the coaches have different personalities as all individuals have different personalities signal is a fellow who seems to enjoy what he does he enjoys being out there enjoys the practice section he gets a lot of fun out of it I think everybody around him you're right the 25-yard line this is the play I've been waiting to see all day long this is what they wanted to do this is their big play receiver their tight end carl hilton the big target he has outrun many defensive backs during the course of this year on big plays such as this the fakin the lawn and the line he gets into a little crease there behind the linebackers name cuts across the grain they were the Boston College defense ran them down here number 95 actually did Gorecki an outside linebacker raining down 32 yards and land his first completion of the day the second completion was a right there at the 17 yard line taken by Shephard penalty marker on the flight ineligible receiver downfield I got Justin you know member it at the beginning of the game I mentioned you stand wasted a couple of timeouts one on the extra point now there's only 50 seconds left in the half and they only have one timeout remaining that leaves mark off now I got the Cougars ineligible receiver downfield that is also loss of town we invite you again stay with us during halftime on my honor your in review and you see a lot of great football plays that occurred during the season on that one to Chevrolet players of the year you'll see in the awards and you can guess who the Offensive Player of the Year is and we'll have first-half highlights of this game as well in which you'll see I thanked that same fella [Applause] [Music] down to the 25 i'm holly amazing holy a spectacular penalty marker on the play personal foul penalty there against Landry it's a break for Houston personal foul late hit nice to meet you get this drawn to the end zone to make it a game again we're going to take a late that look at the late hit the top of the screen on Gerald Landry number three he is down here and there is a dangerous hit he's using his helmet to come in and Landry's back then the officials right there to make the call and it was a good call number 36 Peter Holy has him right there and then it hits going to come in right there the spearing call good call absolutely we can do some damage with that helmet first intent outside to part of your lives for the Cougars a quick my crew [Applause] I'm out Houston now I'm Billy over the line sideline last time all right what about what about your tea plants that thing hoping for you do it off of 312 [Music] so as they discuss it it'll be put in play at the 15-yard line well 29 seconds they're going to have to do something that either gets the ball into the end zone or out of bounds Youngman was not showing much the great sense of humor he has along the sideline yeah he has a great one oh yeah 31 7 what do you think I feel like he said he'd give her something dumpy service thinking was the along are with you wintertime and then touchdown cuts down they were taken by Shepherd so whatever they tossed over worked out [Applause] coming now for the Houston Cougars clendenon will kick it back the little horn I destroyed Gerald Landry the quarterback is not a high percentage store but he has a street stroller we talked about his big game against Texas and he's come on here the second late in the second half off a play-action fake he gets number 29 Larry Shepherd his flanker again the play-action fake had held those linebackers in the free safety Thurman is there too late another look at at number 29 Shepherd a big tall guy he is 6-3 again tremendous speed on the outside for Houston the free safety should have been there but the play-action fake held him he was way late you'll see here as the defense is flipped they make a good fake to the inside Shepherd will come down the strong safety Pereira jumps on the end breaking to the outside Shepherds wide open he's fleet splits the safety man and the left cornerback Dave Odom 64 yards in seven plays confirming a minute 19 second box says 22 seconds remaining to be played in the first half it is now Boston College 31 Houston 14 a cotton ball fast Lindsey there's 22 seconds on the clock the last time food he had it he had 26 seconds you know what he's done that play twice not only against Miami he had that play against temple at the end of the first half as well this will check it out Mike Linden will put it up the barefoot boy and it's up taking just about the goal line and we found out across the 15-yard line Taylor caring we'd like to remind you that the NFC Championship game is Sunday on CBS fourth the surprising Chicago Bears led by the NFL's all-time leading rusher Walter Payton against the San Francisco 49ers wonders of an NFL record 15 games during the regular season that'll be live from Candlestick Park coverage begins at 3:30 with the NFL today and I thought vivia Bears have a little bit of a pass rush don't they era boys but you looked at that game and said I have been here the Cotton Bowl after wanna call Joe side first intent at the 16 yard line then cut time remaining on over that place that first guy he's just waiting for six seconds anything 11 lose that's all four seconds three seconds two seconds one second and at the end of the first half the store is Boston College records for passing and for total offense needless to say he is a consensus first-team all-american selection Doug you had a sensational season and beyond that a spectacular career at Boston College and you put some real excitement in football and your leadership your sense of team play and your great performances game after game not only inspired your teammates but thrilled all of us as fans as well and it's a very special privilege to present you this trophy as the most valuable offensive player of the 1984 college season congratulations doc thank you very much and on behalf of my teammates and myself I accept this award because it is always a team effort and I think they've had more to do with it than any other people in the country and I'd like to thank Chevrolet and CBS and it is a great honor for me all right congratulations Doug and now time and Doug thank your training and guidance um a sense of discipline and inspiration you gave your team led to a long remembered season but beyond that values which should stand those players in good stead for a number of years and it's a very special honor for me to be able to present this trophy to you as coach of the year in 1984 and to present to the Boston College general scholarship fund a check for $2,500 in your honor congratulations thank you very much this is just a tremendous honor and I'm very very happy for a Boston College football team and our players and my assistant coaches have done such a great job and I'm very humbled by it and I'd like to thank Chevrolet for everything that they've done for college football and in CBS and if this is just a great honor and I really appreciate it Thank You coach let me add my congratulations as well and Tom thank would 17 points have come off of turnovers there which is the big thing to total yards of passing yards we have not seen you stand past the ball much and well until the end of the first half there was they came up with the touchdown first and 10 at the 16 yard line including the quarterback for Boston College 20s to the sidelines and finally gets out as I watched the 23 Randy Thornton the defender freshman from New Orleans six yards gained he scared three times for 47 Flutie has Boston College had 47 plays in the first half 12 more than Houston and of course you get Flutie that many more opportunities you know what will happen in the second half you know I don't think the use some defenses actually played that bad leg don't believe the Houston offense has controlled the ball very long kept three off the field good point [Music] to go out the 24 [Music] but this defense is going to have to come up with some sort of big play again era some sort of sack I turnover really down in this part of the field to a blocked punt perhaps to really have them for them to have an opportunity to get back in the ball game I got to bring out the chains bring it all the way across the measure for the possible first down first look push down [Applause] till you're back 23 years you been to bed with the vir what 1965 but the few coaches really has stuck with one offense for a long period of time - Lewis - the pill back in the I formation [Music] for go out of Oz I saw 43 yard line you know I have seen this Boston College team play a number of times they always seem to have called the right play at the right time here is a strong safety blitz and this is the right call to sprint draw right inside the strong safety blitz taunt troy stratford comes right inside bust outside with us for the strong safety had left from and comes up with a big play 16 yards gained he's carried ten times a hundred twenty-one yards he is averaged twelve point one per carry first antennas the 43-yard line and one more time but don't wear this time the Houston defense is there I like the Houston defense needs a shot in the arm here they need to stop Boston College and get that ball back to their offense they've been in a half time whatever adjustments they might have made would be rewarding if they could get the the results of it on this Drive second and 11 at the 42 yard line Boston College of the ball in their own territory [Music] favor the left side it's rolling right I'm trying to get it to Darren his brother the gym people slipping and sliding all over there look like Darren didn't lose his footing there because he was open you're gonna see Darren as Doug gets to the outside now Boston College's made the adjustment it looks like of getting Doug Flutie to the outside on a design flight this was not a scramble it was a design play you're gonna see Darren number 26 right here the ball was actually thrown behind him he really didn't slap the ball with it was a for throw by Doug third down 11 yards to go he sees ball at their own 42 there's a wide receiver far to the left side for the Eagles [Music] that was the break they needed all that intercepted by Randy Cartman well they've forced the punt which is also upgrade helping Houston team if this is the kind of play the Euston defense really needed Thornton number one the strong safety the man who had blitzed a little bit earlier was right in position the ball is thrown up up for grabs all a stew has looked the ball in catch it and then he can advance the ball upfield another 15 or 20 yards Dave hitch is under to the funding now lost on the shot back they fielded future [Music] at 4:35 bounced around the 31 penalty marker goes down penalty marker is down 27 yards five no return boss came to rest on the 30-yard line but what do we got flipping got a clubbing pedal day to be inflicted here 31 to 40 and Eagle Phil eating well moms and dads the world around give their kids same old sound gotta go to school be a big success they wouldn't settle for anything less now they've learned whatever you seek you'll help yourself to reach your feet in the Army Navy Air Force Marines need a trade looking for a skill they have understood this volt antique brought to ball teams here to the Cotton Bowl era what is so different about preparing a team for a bowl game as opposed to regular C's well it's very difficult Lindsey because there's so many social activity that you're confronted with and it distracts from your preparation so you you learn over a period of yours what to accept and what not takes them [Applause] that's the surprising thing to me coach is that Boston College has had so much that had so much fun here they've had so much hoopla so much attention and Doug Flutie has been the center of attraction they have still been able to prepare they have said virtually no to to nothing they've gone to every every event Jack McDowell said that he did most of his preparation when he was back in Boston he said he wanted to get them behind him because he knew there was going to be a lot of social activity here second by Hilton Carl Hill done from Landry this is the second time we've seen this past Lindsey - Carl Hillman again I believe Hilton's and one of the men they're gonna have to get the ball in his hands for them to get back in the situation he is their big play tight in this is the same plate Accord the end of the first half that they threw to him and it had had it not been for a big play by Tony Thurman number 17 the free safety he would have been gone 15 yard pickup on the plane now to the 40 with fearsome carrot [Music] [Applause] Houston's prepared a little bit differently they were by themselves he didn't hear much from them they weren't in the press much Gerald Landry the quarterback was the other quarterback didn't say much I thought they were gonna come out actually be much sharper offensive on second and fourth the 40 Pearson caring again up to the 45 there is fair Bryant one time if he ever was able to figure out before a bowl game whether or not his team really was ready to play did you figure out whether your team was really ready or not I wish I knew what I thought they were really ready we'd lay it in and I thought they were sliced had dropped inflames just what he says [Music] Andre can't get away the exact yes 2:35 in the grass proposed a 10-yard loss on the flight I think we got to take our hats off to Boston College and their defensive preparation they've done an excellent job containing this Houston offense both the run and the pack you know the amazing thing about this defense actually they are very good defense but you've heard so much about bail and and Flutie and all the people on offense people don't talk about people like my crews and Boza Romanowski and Thurman the all-american on defense [Applause] [Music] back in complete directly you got a hand on it [Applause] Jerell andrea is having a rough day here at a terrible starting mister first 10 passes he really has not run the ball yet he is a sophomore they say bill Yolen says about him that two years from now are years now he's going to be an exceptional thrower he had very high on this young man it had been a learning experience for him [Applause] line and that's that telling us he made the tackle penalty marker so now our penalty marker went up into the air very late flag personal foul I guess yes sir [Applause] Azlan drea some of the frustration perhaps is showing through now for the University of Houston team its third and nineteen in the call and it wasn't much of a call or second in nineteen wasn't much of a call here nowhere to go but it was a very late flag because there was a late hit on the play or or Landry had said something to somebody there Landry threw the ball apparently at the Boston College defender so Lonnie Stokes goes into D front formation now be no run back of this now start first in tennis a 38 41-yard punt we have not 10 minutes two seconds remaining to be played in the third quarter this candy goes until leading 31 to 14 by Cotton Bowl Classic in Dallas Texas Boston College in possession I first attended their own 38 yard line Martin and falen of the wide receivers Doug Flutie the quarterback from his last college football game and then complete send it for Martin Fowler stood on the photo crying Thank You Lindsey it's getting very cold down here and as you pointed out it's windy Doug Flutie told me in fat aides had a to me yesterday that he hates cold weather he carries with him a makeshift muffler with hand warmers inside it and you'll notice if it gets really cold er the in the huddle the teammates gather around and try to keep him warm physically we'll look for that later in the game back up to you Lindsey I'm not all that crazy about sure whether my cell phone plinks in Los Angeles what I mean back again and he completes it stops to the 45 Stanford [Music] now we talked about how difficult Lutie is to defend nets because he does spread the ball around running back got Bradford has for Baylin has seven Martin has one I McGee Suleman had been thrown to a couple times he's the tight end although he has not caught any during the course of the year floaties is thrown to 14 different receivers third down and three yards to go at the 45 [Music] [Applause] 5:48 fail on the man for home to pretended covering defensive of defensively wife Macmillan era do you think this is a time perhaps for an attempted block punch not be a good time to go after them they need to make something happen in this corner because they're gonna lose the win in the fourth period and their offense is not doing so perhaps I would look for a block punt attempt make they're going it's your right fat back to do the kick goes out of bounds at the 20-yard line they'll start first in ten that's the 20th 34 yard fight of no return 858 remaining to be played in the third quarter of this game Houston has the football they're trailing 31 to 40 [Music] taken by Raymond Kate who has the carrot of all all that much this afternoon so that's a good point speaking of Raymond tape bill yeoman their coach felt and we said this in the first half that he needed to carry the ball 32 yards he is the only player on this Houston team that's had a run for over 30 yards this whole year now is a 72 yarder against Rice they need to get the ball into his hands or to their other receiver Anthony ketcham number Adu has world-class speed [Music] [Applause] about the 23 yard line when he ran into Roman Asti you know Landry completed his last three passes in that last Drive of the first half he's 3 for 15 I thought maybe that would give him a little confidence but he's come out here in the second half and has not hit one yet third down and seven are go at the 23 [Music] 25 [Music] we usin really doesn't have the kind of past an attack that can really get a quarterback's confidence off because everything is thrown downfield you know they're unfilled dump the ball off to the back not only that everything is off a run action he fakes the run action then comes back receivers have been opening least he can't see them there have been some receivers downfield but he has been he's run the ball I don't know how many times on pass attempts Ronnie Stokes is in to do the funny now gentlemen Martin is deep to receive it for our Boston College checking out the 35 and push back from there Tuggle we'd like to remind you that the NFC Championship game is Sunday on CBS 4th the surprising Chicago Bears head for the NFL's all-time leading rusher Walter Payton against the San Francisco 49ers winners of an NFL record 15 games during the regular season and all of that starts at 3:30 for the NFL today this all starts first intended to 34 yard line with 704 seconds left a third quarter Boston College in possession judge Rudy waiting for the track [Music] I still have it is on across the 35 and up to the 36 when made the tackle Wednesday you and arrow both around college football long time have you seen a college football player who has had much impact you think his Doug Flutie has this past year I have not seen a football player who had just been the impact like he hadn't like he had coming into this game in a long long time I said two years ago he's the most exciting part [Music] out across the 35 yard line I've seen a great many college football players he showed a great deal of promise and got a big buildup and then somehow something along the way seems to happen but foodies been just the opposite when the time has come when he got the big build-up and time came to perform as is the case here today he has performed and one interesting thing is the last four Heisman winners have gone on to lose the bowl game they played in the next that year but Flutie is well on his way to breaking that streak first quarterback since 71 to win the Heisman [Music] with the ball just got rid of it folks segue Oh I'm a fighting unit is on now I have once again the Houston defense as hell if they say does booty perhaps is too small to play don't believe it five nine and three-quarters he gets rid of the ball and he gets a little upset at for sale number twenty-one gets rid of him as well I want to tell you fellows there's still 20 minutes to play in this football game there's gonna be no run back down it's gotta start at the 35 yard line so forget the first thing down on the 29 yard with no return yet Chevrolet's new year kickoff chevy dealers are kicking off the new year with our biggest and longest celebration ever they're out to sell a hundred and seventy-five thousand cars and trucks by January 21st take delivery from a wide selection of on second thought to play in the third quarter Boston College meeting 31 to fourth in [Applause] and encounter very inside the 40-yard line trace down a dengue to go romanovski meet the doc this is the third catch that Hilton is made today and is the third big play and this is again what they wanted to do but this time he's crossing the field coming underneath the deep coverage number 84 there in the middle of the screen again he has the speed he picks up a block there which he did and he could have shaken Romanowski another big play by Hill tied in first in pen at the 40 yard line 25 yard pickup on that completed pass turnover come on the ground thinking about Tristan got it down to the 35 yard line for five we talked about Boston College's past distribution it's really tough for Gerald Landry the quarterback of Houston to be really feel comfortable and confident throwing a football you can see the past introduced nice thrown three too tight in and only one to roof wide receiver none to his back when you have a quarterback who's having an off day you want to throw some shorter passes so he get his confidence back [Applause] check out fight tape [Music] I'm going on [Music] they finally got the outside their option executed here at eight takes it to the outside gets tip blocking and just carry some would-be tacklers right along with him all the way down to about the to three yard line they finally had watched from another vantage point fake to dive now they get it to the outside the man that was on tape with block blockers downfield staying with their man finally executed the outside here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] two of them into Riva Tate the man they wanted to get the ball to 30 times again good blocking by the left side of his line that's over Michael Wharton and he's a big strong back he's 225 pounds is very thick side bring the right girl but it was a this drive was too big plays the option played a long option play the tape and the big pass too tight in Hilton Joosten back in the football game 3121 1024 so four minutes four seconds remaining in the third quarter brendan is gonna kick it off out Steve Williamson Tyrone Taylor are deep to receive it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey listen and since on I became Augusta 15 [Applause] there's a big play in that last drive the beer that I described earlier in the show where Landry comes down there's option one to Lee's force depicts the look at the two blockers the tight end of the flanker bag Shepherd and hilton hill we've got some beautiful block right there shepherd stays on his man and take the Bulls his way all the way down to the 30-yard line the first time in this game if they get the ball outside [Applause] stop there well here's where doug flutie has got to take things into his hands as he has done his whole career now the emotion and the momentum is now going for use of the first time today it's a quote for booty now to step to the forefront get a couple of first down take some the emotional way from Houston the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas we have three minutes 32 seconds remaining duties played in the third quarter Boston College 31 and the Cougars are 21 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for point differential right now with a conversion attempt coming it's down it's up and good hi snap from center to fruity flag down it really disrupted the timing from the whole thing and also think about Doug Flutie he is such a confident quarterback sometimes he makes throw that he really shouldn't because good things have happened to him his whole career but this time the ball should never have been thrown there is Audrey McMillan the free safety number can use at all Southwest Conference performer and we have got a very interesting contest now waiting to get the football they've got Williams and Taylor along to go alive moving up the yard to two now 310 remaining the third quarter [Music] [Applause] touchback first is the 20 yard line let's look again at the ineffective as Pat Haden pointed out that snap is very high and throws the timing of Flutie off he gets a lot of pressure this is one of the few times you'll see booty make a poor judgement as you see the ball as well under throwing it isn't anywhere near you don't see him do that very often but we have really got a football game 31 to 28 three point differential now Boston College has the ball Flutie brings them up pilyeon went along the sidelines [Applause] [Music] by then I can see a quarterback after he is thrown and intercept and come right back and throw the ball the next play and that's just what he did although he picked a an intelligent throw it was a short throw it was tied in Scott he's a man who's coming across the middle there he looked down field first to fail and he was covered then he dumped the ball off the diesel man the tight end the secondary receiver first reception today very careful roll there by Doug Flutie [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you would think with the wind blowing that some of that water would be gone but they're still slipping on that deal right along the centerline they [Applause] [Music] here grab the controller there looks like bidding maybe signal for me third down and left the yard to go [Applause] for the first consent the left the 34-yard line mr. Han Kang Steve's Trahan have done over-the-top on situations like this all season long this is the 14th time he's picked up on a third one you a situation to first down the key of course was the offensive line served right over Steve Kerr fellow the right guard allowed him to get the first down to keep the drive alive 1:39 remaining in the quarter in the third quarter [Music] for the 40-yard line let's listen to Jack McDowell now they joking Boston College trip why do you want them [Music] moving him back a little bit second for now 40-yard line exactly one minute remaining in the quarter [Applause] for that flirty [Music] at the forty a guideline to fail under goes out of onto the penalty marker on the play if a Doug Flutie called a audible on the back wasn't sick no plate completely unnecessary for the back that shift to because it's such a footpath Bradford I think it was [Music] [Music] the time remaining the third quarter 45 seconds [Music] [Applause] [Music] 39 rock is running with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter 5 X 5 X 5x whatever that is third and five big player third floor big play for both the use of defense the forces got the momentum is Houston team has the momentum right now they can force Flutie to punch boy they've really got something going [Applause] [Music] the first loud Darin hoodie [Applause] and time runs out in the quarter so at the end of the third quarter the store is the Eco 31 the Coogan you wang wang puts people in front of computers a quarter to play now Boston College with a football placement and a on the volunteer own forty eight motion across booty handing it off across the 50-yard line let's look at a scoring summary of what has happened in this football classic kill today in the first quarter foodie a 63-yard pass to March but Boston tallies out in front completely an eight-yard fastest Radford 14 to nothing it was at that point Allen now return to kickoff 98 yards to make it 14 to 7 and then Noah 31 yard field goal to make it 17-7 Flutie a 13 yards has two Fela jehan a 2-yard run and there was 31 to 7 we'll pick up second half scoring in a moment because right now Boston College the ball [Music] pretty recent stuff that puts the football incomplete [Applause] an hour twenty two seconds remaining in the second quarter let's pick up that summary again Landry a 15 yard pass to Shepherd now in the second half it is paid on a two yard run for Houston 3121 issue gives a rolling McMullen the 25 yard interception return all the way for a touchdown that's where we are 31 played on the two yards on 3121 it is the ego's 31 and the Cougars 28 [Applause] diving says made by failing but there are a couple of margins I'd have any clip over there [Applause] big clip made here on 94 Eddie Gilmore and the clip is made by Mark Bardot ball number 63 he's right there Gilmore's the nose tackle just trying to run Flutie down makes it than half a hose boy that could that's how you can really hurt a knee ouch it hurts good call by the official they're a while to clip defensive lineman when you can tackle the tackle but once the quarterback Raines breaks containment you cannot do that throw down puts the ball back that's the 29 yard line Boston College in their possession boy I hate to see those kind of place that was that good judgment mr. forever air 29 30 29 [Applause] what's that fourth down and the funding unit on the field at 13:28 left to play in this game Houston Cougars want the football they fail by three I think Andre mcfillin has been playing an outstanding football game this guy played quarterback for a couple of years in fact in there playing safety he's done a great job particularly in the second half where we had the big interception for the touchdown of course well they lost and drop back there now to receive Lawson has it after 33 yard line returns this to the 34 yard line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Landry comes on now to run that place where I intend to shoot you have the ball at their own 35-yard line Boston College Gleason 31 to 28 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what a change in confidence were seen in Gerald Landry now he hit a couple of passes at the end of the first half hit hit Karl Hilton at this beginning in the second half had a couple of big runs and right here he is running his beer offense as we anticipated that he would good eyes by Landry he saw the hole open up really right over his Center and just ducked in there for a big play first and ten at the 48 yard line [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] Carl Hiltzik idea was not happy about it neither with this Coleman but that was sheer determination on the part of tape they called the clip on Carl Hilton the man right there that Coleman's talking to again one of the adjustments obviously Houston has made here in the second half is to be able to get the ball to Raymond Tate more than they did in the first half five carries for Tate the first half but he did a much more of a factor here as you pointed out earlier that Tate just gets stronger Kochi Holman said yesterday that seems like is that the game wears on he just gets stronger and better first and 20 at the 37 yard line [Music] [Applause] second and twenty at the 37 [Music] laughter this to the quarterback is so important I really believe the most important trait of any quarterback is to have mental toughness be able to bounce back from an interception or a bad play or a bad game and come back and then play well the next week or the next play Gerald Landry had a tough first half but he's played exceedingly well here in the second or four seven people take the crap [Applause] [Music] marker on the flag run out of bounds at the 46 foot there's a market to be checked out this was a whole pool officials not too happy with us holding [Music] all the emotion was going Houston's way then they had a couple of big penalties here and a wind-up for third and thirty second and third I guess you had a lot of those in your career what you call second and thirty I've fun it now it's too bad because they've had a couple of things called back to completed the pass I also had the nice run by tape back to the 28 yard line the other thing you've got a problem here for Houston is because they are into the wind and field position is very important to them if they have to punt into that wind it makes a big difference with these penalties [Applause] [Music] [Applause] over the hills on the navajo was intended Alec tried to get the ball to Hilton that time he was pretty well-covered landry comes faking the opposite way there is Hilton right there but it's just overthrown I tell you I would throw that ball to hilt and give him a chance because he's six four he's got great speed he just overthrew him here he's releasing off the line turning to the inside if Landry can get it to him he's going to get it but unfortunately Landry over [Applause] [Music] just at the 30-yard line bring up a fourth down in the funding unit comes Ron Houston has to give up the football Ronnie Stokes on to fight [Music] Martin is offering back to field it for the Eagles of Boston College who leave in this game 31 to 28 [Music] boy oh boy whoo I'll take the bad dog Dino run [Applause] Justin 43 yards on a 12 yard punt no return this is today's Chevrolet we talked about the wind being very much a factor it's obviously blowing from left to right and Houston punted right into the wind there the result was the 12 yard punt well and also those two penalties that Houston encouraged took them back another 20 yards and I said that Houston had to get back into this ball game in the third period downwind now they've really got a fight into that win [Music] complete tended for Phelan good pressure on the inside they were put on by Brian twin the linebacker produced it really got it Doug Flutie face and he had to release the ball way before he wanted to also off-balance because he was moving backwards second and ten at the 43 yard line of Houston and Boston College possession Ryan when he's a leading tacklers at all Southwest Conference a former [Applause] for the top [Applause] [Applause] Martin a man trying to hang on booty has thrown the ball behind receivers a number of times today maybe the fourth row I've seen him throw behind a receiver I think he's getting a little bit more pressure than people in his big play here 13 10 Boston College got the Houston 43 hug is only 2 of 11 this half [Applause] [Applause] it was failing diving for it incomplete that's I have a fourth out those clootie was on his hands and knees after he missed this one Gerard Fela number 20 he is not supposed to have much fever I tell you what he keeps beat people deep he thief he runs right by number 45 Martin the ball was just thrown too low not enough projected trajectory lest you forget he was the receiver and the fabulous game ending - Miami I'm is my fish fair catch and is second at the 13 yard line taken there by Austin we have done it first and then it was a 30 yard but no returner the end of all again as many of his colleagues have said The Pillowman is as good a coach as there is at getting a team ready for one game his team did not get off to a roaring start here this afternoon but he certainly hasn't back in this football game right now 10:41 left to play he trailed by three points his team has the football first intended their own 14 yard line Landry the quarterbacks with of all that it out near the 20 yard line Romanowski made the tackle it's got 18 times for 74 yards so yeoman really is amazing we've had 18 winning seasons out of those 23 they're at Houston he plays well enough to get his team into the conference and have been into the Southwest Conference it has been at the Cotton Bowl really more than anybody else the past nine years more than Texas and SMU I said to him yesterday helped me out a little bit on a date I met you on a plane coming out of Stanford after an Ohio State game when you were just a finishes in stage incomplete Hilton the intended receiver I said what was the date he said 1955 and that's exactly how many face Chili's the same thing until foot tells it's a quick post take the couple three steps and ten and look at it okay watch the ball right back the hill is tight in quick quick food walked into for the ball a little bit quicker though about 55 that's exactly when he's got a hundred and fifty five wins he's been in the winter with winner's circle a few times third down and four yards Adam out there but incomplete Landry the healthcare person Landry had a couple of open receivers here and they wanted the ball to go to Hilton he was the man they wanted the ball to go through he's the tight end number 84 he comes right over the middle memory the only needed four yards but Landry was under some duress because it was a blitz on and actually he didn't even look at Hill folks we've got to kick it into the wind again told you stop good and it's right there about the 45 yard line so start first and ten at the 45 yard line [Applause] the 49,000 bar in Dallas Texas Boston College is in possession in their second half the second see that's five punching one interception they listen on the ground the right side so Honda's brought down to the back for 41 yard line by a win every second Island about six minutes 28 seconds remaining to be played in this cotton ball game and Boston College is leading 31 to 28 [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's not about the 36 yard line [Music] very gals are off it's a 48 or secret signal to play and you're right yeah third down and two yards to go for the either [Applause] against the - what'd she look like he's short you go for it here do you think yeah I think so your 35 yard line I would go for it here I don't know whether you watch the field goal you put himself up six points well he gave me a nice mark though a spot on the ball I'm gonna bring it out and measure it see whether it's first down our fourth down at the 35 yard line play and BC leading by three points [Applause] [Music] people Oh time he's been pretty remarkable throwing the ball on fourth down three of four only seven yards with three touchdowns two of them against Alabama to come back when this is the kind of team that probably is willing to take a chance and go for the run action pass and go for the big one here see if they do or not [Applause] hard over the top if they do so very often let's arrive alive against Rohan is such a good short yardage runner we mentioned this is his 15th time where he's made the conversion on 3rd and or 4th and short just right over the top good leaping ability is a big strong tall kid picks up a very important first down for the Eagles he goes now at the 32 yard line first down and 10 yards to go [Music] [Applause] so the 26 yard line Adri McClellan led the stop we really seen a difference Boston College offense here the last few minutes they apparently made a decision to try to control the clock some they've run the ball the last four or five plays they use the too tight in formation and they're trying to run for some first down to control the clock timeout is taken here now a Houston man introduced being assisted off the field 734 seconds left to play in the game Robert Harper fine backer hopple off the field has been replaced by Ronald Hall now it is second down four yards to go for Boston College to have the ball at the Houston 26 yard line seven minutes 34 seconds left to play Boston College leading 31 to 28 the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's the first thing yard line dr. Alexander we've seen so much finesse by Boston College all you and forget that you can power the football I just each throw Han is a strong runner i here's a big kid he's 215 pounds just bounces off a number of people a to tight end site said what's the offensive line they outweigh this houston team at the big offensive line a big block by McDonald number 71 nine who sealed on inside there and allowed strong just jump off tackle in there 13 times 13 yards Danny said 1923 [Music] neither the secured line [Applause] all good athletes you can just sense the athlete in their eyes the foodies eyes and Troy's Bradford he's got an excellent eye for finding holes bouncing around a good block they're about 63 Bardwell good hold I should say and then and his Fred furred finds a little crease there to make it a little nice little run two yards to go now second down the Vols outside the 5-yard line [Applause] just across the bus - ha Jerry looks to be short of the first down Otto McMillan made the tackle again this bribe the really seven play drive it's been all runs by Boston College well a good balanced football team can do both they've built their reputation on the passing game and of course here they're demonstrating that they can run that football be third down one yard to go at the 4 yard line where's she - Trahan in this situation in the past [Applause] [Music] [Applause] an 8 plate drive all runs [Applause] by for hot [Applause] [Music] doesn't smell accept it falen he'll hold for him [Applause] they play if you're a defender for Houston you know that they're going to give the ball the Steves for hon in this situation but there's a very good offensive line surge in still you see number 33 just run right over Audrey McMillan number 10 he and the ball keep popped out but he had already crossed the plain here's the offensive line play Steve trapillo number 65 McDonald were awesome there again McDonald just really sealed down the inside mr. Ohan just popped out outside one more look it's Trahan a superb there was some question about him not playing he got in the end zone and they're back on the board for six more so we'll check it out now for the Eagles if you receive it Alan and ketchup Kelly by 10 Allen let's take a look again now at the last touchdown [Applause] you know beyond the great blocking on this touchdown place for Hansa had such a head of steam that McMillan had no chance look at the force that he has right here he's not slowed down and McMillan doesn't have a chance to stop him [Applause] first intent for 24 the Cougars fail by ten Landry handing it off screen hey Kerry now let's go down together Pat O'Brien Thank You Lindsey I just talking to Steve Strahan he used to be a high jumper in high school he jumped six seven he said that leaping ability came in handy they put 20 pounds on him made him into a fullback let's go back up to Linda hey second down in seven yards to go at the 27 yard line five minutes 14 seconds left to play in the Cotton Bowl game Dan was on the 27 yard line Mitchell says Houston has it I think the ball bounced back up to landry he's got it on his chest he was sent retains possession we just drop followed would have been a pretty good game right potentially it could have been a very big play offensive ly and that's what they need remember they've only got up the outside one other time with Raymond Tate on that option fight for the big play third down and seven yards to go throwing against a pretty stiff freeze [Applause] long hood who's coming to the ball game now the running back [Applause] it's completed for the first round of about 39 Hylton gang up [Applause] Crissy coral Hilton the tight end get flexed out at the top of the screen he directs right there in the middle of the screen he just comes right in into little blitz goes right with the strong safety has left from he was the man blitzing and Landry read the Blitz and dump the ball off to Hilton for a big first down for them children shot for 491 first and 10 at the 39 yard line Houston trailing by 10 points for the ball in their own tears hurts the ball roll away will be gone Boston College at the 36 yard line [Applause] confounded reality and it was Harrington who charted live the problem of the beer working close to the line of scrimmage the high-risk offense can go both ways for you in this particular case another fumble watch here as landry goes down the line thanks to number one but penetration there right there by Harrington the fumble Landry cannot get it back and Boston College has the ball again [Applause] first 10 10 for the egos now at the houston 36 yard line 407 left to play then he goes leave it on the ground Jehan Carrie let's look again at the last play and see what do we think about the fumble if it was a fumble well it may have just popped loose from the ground itself now the bulk did come loose right out of his hand and did pop loose Harrington was there on him and there was Thomas to make the recovery where's that 10 straight running plays from Boston College I don't think we have ever seen that this entire year second honey that's the 34 yard line of Houston [Music] [Applause] you can play that the flag Martin the intended receiver it's a holding penalty on tell you though the Doug Flutie has had two or three guys wide open four touchdowns today that he has not yet he's course thrown three touchdown passes that's unusual for him you're right totally will be marked off here against Boston College again let's get on to pedal Brian Thank You Lindsey there are 3 minutes and 21 seconds left on that clock left of the forty-ninth Cotton Bowl three minutes and 21 seconds left of Doug Flutie being a squeaky-clean amateur athlete in 3 minutes and 21 seconds it begins his father is interviewed about 46 agents they've narrowed it down to a few I think they have one left and after this game they'll begin to decide whether to go to the USFL the NFL and the endorsements in all event let's go Becca Linton alright second an 18 at the 44 yard line Flutie ways to get the ball and he's got it [Applause] [Music] first and 10 at the 13 yard line [Music] this was a beautiful job by Purcell of covering an awful lot of ground while that ball was in the air when we were looking at it from this vantage point the first box it looked like oh it's going to be a touchdown there's the throw by foodie watch Purcell come from the right side cover on enormous amount of ground go up and catch the ball it was a great defensive play well he's been picked on yet today so that's a nice redemption for Purcell so now the Cougars trailed by 10 points they are three minutes 14 seconds left to play they have them all in their own territory at the 13 yard line [Applause] [Music] is it on my page clever ball handling there hey really play with that ball it's amazing to me Jill Andrew wanted to throw this ball downfield but he ended up just pitched it off there - Raymond tape we gonna get a look at him once to get the ball at the top of the screen to his wide receiver Shepard see Cox but he brings the ball back down here's the triple option then he decides to run it but two defenders converge on him whap he just pitches it off there - Raymond Tait he takes a hit but Tait picks up first down at the 26 yard line take 30 shoulder on that play [Music] well it popped up into the air it hit gareki shoulder and was grabbed by Rogers well raised does pretty good hands [Applause] walked up the 25-yard line bitching Gorecki tipping that boys tip two of them today had nine coming into the game he really gets his hands on a lot of passes to recognize suckin down on the eleven yards to your loss of one yard on the last play [Music] [Applause] across 40 and then he catch them but did not hold it Ketchum's been kind of silent today has me but he's had some big plays during the course of the year he can really run this guy can really has all kinds of speed the NCAA 440 track champion a few years ago Balch in Mankato was well thrown by Landry it's funny Landry is thrown exceptionally well to his left which is far more difficult both of his good completions have come rolling out to the left Beckham has not caught one today third and 11 at the 25-yard line [Applause] under under one of his own Oh [Music] but with Ferrara we got there and it's back around the 15 yard line 11 yard lock on the play a big defensive play by the Boston College Eagles Gerald Landry is just trying to get his team back in this game right now and trying to get the ball downfield to one of those receivers now he knows he's got some pressure because he was all one-on-one coverage but from the back side David Ferrara who was the strong safety and their leading tackler came from where he couldn't see him Ronnie Stokes and deep hog formation digging into the wind [Music] there you go there'll be no run back and this was about the 43 yard line we'd like to remind you that the NFC Championship game is Sunday on CBS Sports those Chicago Bears led by the NFL's all-time leading rusher Walter Payton go against the 49ers it all starts at 3:30 with the NFL today with Brent Musburger it is out there just short of the 43 yards on now first and ten for BC the Eagles leading by 10 points 1 minute 33 seconds to play on the cotton ball again [Music] mr. ha out of the 45-yard line picked up - it'll be second down and eight yards to go Houston only has one timeout remaining [Applause] Justin taking the time I hear was 1:22 showing on the clock Austin Khan is leading 38 to 28 and it's been an exciting Cotton Bowl football game from our father Bill Friel and our statistician Mike Swanson gentlemen thank you very much does he get it congratulations on your 25th that's really good fun may I say the same has been for me thank you very much here comes the VC [Music] [Applause] locked out of our inside the 20 yard line it's the third time that has happened to Stratford when getting out in the open no unlock Bob we certainly went off our thanks to members of the Cotton Bowl Executive Committee Chairman Jill - jr. president Jim Ray Smith business manager Mike Justice executive vice president the horse a legend in his own time Jim Brock gentlemen thank you very much for marvelous week in Dallas Texas [Music] [Applause] second ah first down and 10 yards to go pit stop here this traffic he left for the touchdown [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Royce Bradford has had a sensational day both catching the ball and running the ball he's run for close to 200 yards 196 yards on 20 carries he caught a touchdown pass take a look at Stratford and we're looking at a team a Boston College team that is not one-dimensional when they've had to run the ball here in the fourth quarter they've run the ball and run the ball extremely well led by Troy Radford right there the other conversion attempt coming now Boston College is leading 44 to 28 Kevin snow will attempt the conversion here Balin will hold as usual [Applause] today we'll make it 45 to 28 BTSs to the Cotton Bowl record for points with 45 year-old mark 41 by fence state in 1975 so it's from the big day for the Eagle to Boston College in Dallas Texas your thoughts on the afternoon fall again well I think that said without question at Boston College is for real they're an outstanding football team and it came in here ranked eighth some of the polls were a little higher but they will move up in the rankings and deservedly so and Flutie deserves all the accolades that he's received during the course of the earth he's truly one of the most exciting players I've ever seen even though it wasn't finished booting today it was enough to win this football game by considerable amount Fathead well it may seem ridiculous to say because Boston College is floored 45 points but I think the use of defense did a reasonably reasonably good job the Houston offense in the first half we really did not do much he did not keep the ball keep it away from Flutie and for Flutie it has been a remarkable four years it's been fun for me to watch him I've forced related to the guy because I had so much grief about my height over the years so it's it's been nice to see the young man who is a very nice young man be successful and I wasn't a great deal of success in the future I watched you two the other day with you interviewing for the outside I always say to the high ground check out coming up now with Kevin snow to put it up Allen then catch a heart of the deep man so the FAFSA Siddhanta the middle then is filled at the 20-yard line return to the 2530 and Houston gets it up about 34 yard-line returned by Lawson for 361 yards rushing of Boston College is the second best in Cotton Bowl history to 541 total yards is a new Cotton Bowl record the old one was 514 September Surrey in 1946 this Houston team is a very young team 45 freshmen on this team I have a sneaky suspicion they'll be back and research complete and it goes across the 40-yard line taken there by Hilton stop the clock at 55 seconds remaining Boston College is leading 45 to 28 and in less than a minute dr. woody will have completed [Music] [Applause] those are the gang illegal supporters who came here to by the thousands they came [Music] sandy not for the 50-yard line second there Giddings with the receiver totally a first ten ten Todd Russell made the tackle [Music] and again Landry [Applause] stopping the clock for 35 seconds Larry Shepard was over there second down and ten yards to go still going he's done a remarkable job you know people picked his team to finish fifth in the conference again big wins over Texas and SMU with a very young team at a great 33 continuez because he's just been given a five-year extension on his contract and come please very down and 10 yards to go well he has to be doing something right and I'm talking about coach Dolman again he's brought this team in here four times in the last nine years since being a part of this conference and you don't do that without having some pretty good coaching and pretty good team third down and ten yards to go Landry [Applause] goes down Ryan Arden Varitek fifteen seconds on the clock oh it's active laughing [Applause] [Music] fourth down coming up down for 15 seconds on the clock with you not played on New Year's Day since 1943 leading here 45 to 28 I played the Cotton Bowl just 1940 he was tournament Landry on fourth down touring as long as he can and it's taken at the 22 yard line taken there by shepherds 32-yard pick up the Chevrolet most valuable players of the game are for Boston College choice adverts fathers brought to the inbox marker and placed at the 22-yard line in audrey McMillan the pre safety for you students are valuable player as well and so a check in the amount of $1,000 will be donated by Chevrolet to each college's general scholarship fund to further assist qualified students in all choose an academic field with three seconds on the clock they're all over the field here now with three seconds to is showing on the clock on that in completed size as a sign on the message board that says please stay off the field I have an idea [Music] [Laughter] yeah [Applause] well somebody started out and everybody fallen here they came on that what they presumed to be the last play but it was Wallace down out of us they're 22 and a half yard line Flutie head in the head six seconds to throw the ball against Miami nothing what happened there either right that's right [Applause] some of the VC players are assisting and getting them off the field now Houston ready to go rocking back there's lambie DOM and I forgot the ball and he's down to the 15 he's up to 13 and that's just patters going out deal with a Boston College everyone is 45 to 28 and so we'll return after this word from your local final score there's Boston College 45 years to 28 this afternoon Doug Flutie came out here of course having been the busiest man in America in recent week because he's been such a popular football player right away he showed he was for real long touchdown pass a footy game back and Houston had an outstanding second half for Doug Flutie then resorted to handing the ball off leaving it on the ground and guiding the attack and front boston college home
