Goodwrench and General Motors parts [Music] for the 55th straight game a crowd and excessive 100,000 is here for today's clash between Washington and Michigan and we just have ideal weather conditions for our first game of this season hi everybody I'm Gary bender we're excited about year 3 of college football on CBS and with me my friend my broadcasting partner will help describe the action this season bad heat now we have two similar teams are in the same boat well they both won last week with new quarterbacks and good defense now expect both these teams to pound the football right at you and have that defensive come after you kind of philosophy now we're going to further analyze these two clubs but one of the great traditions in Big Ten football the fans today the University of Michigan marching band they took ball is back on CBS as college football on CBS will continue after this commercial message and a word from your local station they advise [Music] Michigan Stadium Ann Arbor Michigan the Washington Huskies are on the field they shutout Northwestern last week 26 nothing at Don James has directed the Huskies to either a first or second place finish in the pac-10 each of the last seven years two teams very similar not only from the coaching standpoint but from an offensive philosophy and also at quarterback that to an experienced quarterbacks first for Washington you melon he is a walk-on from the junior college and he has a very strong right arm and he did all that was asked of him last week and helping his team win but the problem was not much was asked of him his defense really won the football game Don James is asking a lot more of him today against Michigan now Michigan has Jim Harbaugh he is the son of a coach who is the coach at Western Michigan he played out in Palo Alto for a couple of years last year he was a third string quarterback and you have to like Harbaugh he comes in his very first game a hundred thousand people playing against the number one team in the nation Bernie Kosar s on the other side of the field it he leads his team to a win he's an emotional leader his matter of fact after last week's game he ran up the bow and shook bow and said bow I'm going to play better next week both said you better as far as similarities offensively both teams really will use the tailbacks extensively but before we talk further about that everybody awaiting the arrival Wolverine's of michigan as this crowded in excess of 100,000 this is a special place for football this is the largest owned college structure in the nation and each year michigan has led the nation in attendance and you can see the wall marines under the direction of Bo Schembechler his 16th year the Dean of the Big Ten coaches and here they come [Applause] top-ranked Miami 22 to 14 last week the nation's longest winning streak at 13 games ranked third of the country and Bo Schembechler has won or tied for the Big Ten title ten times now padlets let's talk some football a little bit here we have the tailback as a real story today and I want you to tell us a little bit what we'll expect both for Michigan and Washington well both teams are similar they're both tailback dominated offense but there's the man Gerald white number 22 when Titusville Florida of Michigan's bass plays a play called the bounce play gives him three separate options now what he has to do is watch the block of the tight end on the defensive end if he kicks that defensive end out to the right then the bounce play becomes an off tackle play the tailback will take the ball follow the block the tight end run make it an inside running play now it that tight in hooks the defensive end to the left his screen then the next important block is the fullback on the strong safety if that fullback kicks that strong safety out to the right and the tailback will follow that block and cut off that otherwise he'll hook that song safety to the left and bounce to play offside for a big game that you talked about Gerald white but they have Rick Rogers they have Jamie Morris on the other hand Washington Walternate Jackson and Robinson the two of the last three meetings between these food clubs have been to the Rose Bowl and today it should be a good one in Michigan Michigan has won the toss however they have waved off the decision as an end result Washington will receive the football this is Todd slopey number 99 who will be kicking off with a barefoot Danny Green and was L hill 20 vers set it up the 20-yard line offensively let's look at the Washington Huskies you melon we mentioned he is a junior college walk-on last year ran the Scout squad Walt hunt the veteran full packet outstanding blocker Ron Jackson let him in rushing last week against Northwestern and Danny Green he's the big play performer and Mark Patterson the route runner the man will assure hands and rod Jones after two seasons of injury getting a starting knot at tight end now we have one change defensible he want to set for Michigan al centage they're all big ten nose guard had back problems he's not starting the game Joe gray instead is in there from the 20 any green in motion [Applause] offensive line for Washington they're having to rebuild losing a couple of outstanding players Dennis mehar an outstanding akima Titian al Robertson his dad played at Stanford at 51 Ernest C an honorable mention pac-10 performer Doug crow at the right guard spot and a right tackle this is the biggest man of the pac-10 Kevin Gogan weighs about 290 pounds [Music] last week against Northwestern have to call on him to do more today second down 10 and a Half Men and Jackson out to the 24 my Hammerstein 66 made the stop now let's look defensively at Michigan there's Jim's car cell they they want him to just relax a little bit he was nervous last week Hammerstein one of seven brother acts on this team and this is the guy that's not started he was in great pain yesterday instead it's gray and Kevin Brooks the all-american candidate rocky Lyles with three interceptions last week and non James the Dean of the pac-10 coaching down six-four Washington beautiful protection [Applause] you know precisely right he had two problems last weekend [Applause] six yard game perhaps the two more that was conferred number 30 who defended on to play and Tony Gant 14 will go back to receive this punt Gant out of Fremont Ohio was an outstanding running back in high school and Thane Cleveland there's his average last week taking a new stadium he hid it well get inside [Music] we'll make it to the 35 we have a penalty flag at the 46 yard line that was the 47 yard kick that time by Cleveland and a six yard return I mean 47-yard punt that's what are your pet peeves you always want to call it punter putters we have a punter and we have a kicker both or courts from Oakland Illinois the referee we have a clipping flipping against Michigan so they will not start where they wanted to let's look now well we have this opportunity to look at the Michigan offense at quarterback Jim Harbaugh his dad now the head coach at Western Michigan Bob Merriman hit three touchdowns last week Gerald white letterman rushing with 89 yards and Steve Johnson 13 had wide receivers and fence being sin Nelson considered to be the best returning tight end in the big 10 so the penalty sets Michigan at the 20 yard line and Jim Harbaugh in to run the team 200 sets is one of those last week was a deflected [Applause] Jerell right and you can see the white shirts arrive and pushing back the offensive line in Michigan the biggest concern for Bo Schembechler play Miller possibly their best player now form Norman Oklahoma Bob cappuccino art bowler dose trying to replace the all-american Tom Dixon Doug James who was a tackle last year now at the guard spot mark Hammerstein his brother Mike starting on defense and marks an offensive tackle real Fanny Johnson now has come in at a wide receiver white and Perryman the running backs second down and six as the first [Applause] the first tab rod looks like that we talked about the bounce played early in the football game again they going to give the ball to Gerald white and let him just read the block to fix up a nice block by his guard Doug James coming around spins and turns for a first down boys talked about this Michigan team how they attack you gonna pound the ball out you set us up some play-action fakes off the bounce play by Jim Harbaugh a little later on in the game Wright is just excellent tackle the tackle doesn't have the great breakaway speed Bercow skis come in defensively great linebackers the corner cuts what reaction bye the strong safety let's check now the defense for these Washington Huskies Reggie Rodgers Don Rogers brother they ought American now in the National Football League Ron home all-american candidate Alford they like it they think he's coming on very strong just a sophomore and Tony Lewis had an outstanding game last week Fred small had an interception against Northwestern two teams with good defenses still waiting for their offense to arrive 300 of our gray split out on this play along with fence beam second down 11 Perrin and pairing on across the 35 to the 36 Timmy amber made the stop and let's look at the rest of that Washington defense they've always been known to have active linebackers and this guy was a pac-10 Defensive Player of the Week for his play Joe Kelly's their fastest linebacker besty Jackson had four interceptions last year a JC Pearson a junior college transfer Tim Rogers he goes after people he'll hit and ten peoples they think he will be in the same realm as it can easily someday third and six now for Michigan on the 36 yard line Harbaugh he was hit hard as you the man we've just talked about was the guy who hit Harbaugh you're gonna see Harbaugh takes and punish it right off the corner number 36 Joe Kelly comes off the corner he has not picked up it was a mixup in the offensive line protection and that's what they wanted to do early to these young quarterbacks remember we're talking about two inexperienced quarterback put some pressure on him early see if he can shake them up cause them to open throw receivers or not play as well as they're capable of that's Danny Green back to receive this punt potty Roberts out of Great Bend Kansas hit it he almost had it blocked he gets an effective roll [Applause] so the ball will be marked at the 20-yard line and that kick will be recorded as a 64-yard at an excellent afternoon cutting last game [Applause] record is 76 yards and Crazylegs her shallowing hers has that record Michigan Stadium there's a way that they have instituted here a hundred [Applause] under [Applause] termination he gets a couple of yards we didn't get a chance to see all of the Michigan starters defensively let's look at him now there's Tim Anderson he's a walk-on very active their leading tackler from a year ago garland rivers just a software that they predict greatness for you in a preseason All America the brother of Mike their daddy he's playing the best football of his [Music] the Jackson on both series that Washington has had this far in the first quarter they've come up in third and long situations in their first series they were third and six Danny Green dropped the ball now we'll find them at third nine third and ten we have to remember these are primarily running football teams this is not the kind of situation they're best in they want to be third and two third and three type of type of situations and this is not their environment it's not anybody's environment coming into Michigan Stadium right screen in motion all six four four and a half and on mark Madison made the stop did he get the first down he did just across the part of that chain grab Cochrane defending on the play and that has to give him some confidence and that's just what he needs early on in a hostile home environment you villain gets to the corner this is an unbalanced line with some motion he Sprint's out tries to break containment and drills the ball really the only place she can possibly be right to the outside of Patterson nice footwork by Patterson in college football one foot you're in to feature in the first down Madison and melon were high school teammates in she when Patterson was the quarterback no one could beat him out to the 34-yard line Kevin Brooks on the stop now we talked to top the show Gary about Michigan's bass play being in the balance by net what you just saw there is Washington's bass play just a little pitch played to the outside the key blocks there the tight end in the full-back as is Michigan's the tailback reads those blocks and tries to get to the outside but can option run run virtually anywhere we were looking at Mike Mallory we mentioned his dad now the coach at Indiana and they're going to play in Bloomington on September 29th that'll be interesting for Mom when I wonder who's your root for see I picked this stadium is [Applause] [Music] first down was an impressive play by humility old house strong he is first down catch across the 40 milah is off to a very good start as it was last week he avoids the Russian he's a big man but he was strong enough to be able to fight off the tackler and deliver the ball at the hunt before out close to a first down but this is one of the things that we inserted by you Miller being able to get off to a quick start the poured the pressure had bumped these defenses are gonna put on quarterbacks you see time what a hit there yeah I was duck Mallory he wanted to lay off and they did not call it that it is a first down again Hulan he's so strong with that arm he if he has one problem he throws too hard at that time good touch and you're right and the concern they had was him getting off quickly because he feels some of the pressure behind him you mean does it has two very good quarterbacks behind him and sicker oh and Chandler he knows he has to play well here the press dodging get him in the spray again is their name on a first down Jackson advancing to the 43 yard line Jim scarce Ellie and Tim Anderson made the stop the one thing about this Washington offense they've always had the ability to pound it out but they've had to replace a lot of people up front as has Michigan well Washington only has two returning offensive lineman those are probably the most difficult men to replace you have to be intelligent and yet you still have to be aggressive there's a lot of assignments those offensive line and rebuilding your offensive sky replacing Steve fuller in fact in offensive clarity fourth quarter last year completed 14 straight to peak Michigan Jerez Jackson running doggedly across the 45 to the 47 Mike Mallory again on the stop Michigan's defense never been known had to be big but they are active and that's what they look for well that's their philosophy Gary Moeller their defensive coordinator says they want to give each of their defensive players three separate options they want to slant they want to be aggressive they want to jump around and confusion because of who they are they get a lot of guys around the football watch at this afternoon Bo Schembechler what stability he has given us Michigan [Applause] to the 45-yard line Cochrane on the stop and that's two times now millon has gone to the floor back something you might not expect one of the interesting things we want to watch about you girl and I just happened to notice in last week's game it was his first game when he comes up to the line of scrimmage and looks downfield at the defensive secondary he threw the ball every time last week when he comes up and puts his eyes down and then back to the his offenses Center has been a run so that time he looks downfield he didn't throw the ball swats that a little bit further well he's completed three in a row now to the 45 first down as you get into the field the Jackson good reaction by books Kevin Brooks is out of Detroit and if there's one thing that he asked overcome is playing every down he has great athletic ability the pros are very excited about it the potion Becker who's a man of perfection will not condone or allow a guy not to play every day I'd be down his defense to you mentioned Gary Moeller not learning to play for him pick up [Applause] what was that he picked up some on bail it's just like I mentioned a little bit before last week's game when Hugh Miller looks downfield as we saw there looks downfield at the defensive coverage you can see him his head is up his eyes are pointing down field look at the coverage he has thrown the ball virtually every time absolutely and when his eyes are down you've run the football gotta go under coach pick up those things third down and seven [Music] with protection on target did a bad job of not getting the first down there he is just short of it about a half yard Michigan Stadium the largest college own structure in the country this is a 50/50 straight time in excess of 100,000 and we're just very excited to be back this 1984 on a football season six [Applause] [Music] to stick it and that is where you have a pick quarterback and it comes to an advantage he weighs about 215 pounds and he has the first down across the 35 he's a big fella but he went right behind Dan earnest e his offensive Center on here's the key to block when you just need a couple inches watch the block and the offensive right guard duck TRO just cleared the way he only needed a couple inches the center Ernest E and crow cleared the way from willing to pick up the first down let me ask you something Ernest E to the end of his name so they could pronounce it understand down what out is that help how would you like to get his name in a spelling bee we just get a pronounce right we're doing well I don't know how that makes it any easier to say there's the X range man for your benefit first down [Music] [Applause] and the sophomore pull back to the 22 yard line that's a 13-yard game this is a nice change if by Washington businesses their six first down all the first five will run this is the first first down pass but they've been short control passes allowing milind to get his rhythm to feel confident in a hostile environment we've seen him throw the ball to a couple of backs fund and alec poke his other fullback Rick fate good game plan by Don James's husband we have a score we understand that Alabama's was in their first game they trail three to nothing this is a 13th play on this Drive first down at the 22 Jackson and he may have gotten the yard as Brad Cochran coming up from the quarterback spot made the stop along with Jim scar Sully cookie Jackson he said this week he was nicknamed cookie because when his mother couldn't make him behave the only way she could get him to do it was give him a cookie does I have to give my kids five dollar bills they were there well behind them because I know your wife has some discipline there's the score at Georgia Tech bill Carey's team he's predicting some big things for the ramblin wreck [Music] to the 15 to the 10 and these to the 7 that will be first in gold but Tony Gant Mike Mallory over to make the tackle and Jackson and Robinson get the great depth of tailback but the key block was but an attack on Kevin bogan the Judah see him right down the right of the screen 72 and he just kicks Hammerstein out that allows cookie Jackson to pick its way through a big hole a key of course that big block bike over there is Jackson Ron cookie Jackson a senior out of Franklin High School in Seattle first and goal the ball at the 8 yard line [Music] [Applause] forty-two over there along with pocket quite a collision Jackson picking up three yards and Danny Green getting up slowly he's lost his helmet to play a little defensive back for the Wolverines and what's the intensity in the hitting down here by the goal line this is for six points down here cookie Jackson learning their base play this week there's a hole aggressive defense they get a lot of people around the football as you see Danny Green getting injured walking off the field I think they were too aggressive pads we have a penalty against Michigan that can hurt there is a goal Jerry bowler his defensive coordinator the penalties against the hearts against the Huskies holding repeated okay so that will bring it back to the 18 yard line Gary Moeller by the way has a son plane on this Michigan team will watch for him he's number 49 seven sets of brothers you got all kinds of coaching connections recent legacies here look at that Michigan that goes back of course to the Sugar Bowl the three field goals [Music] first mate [Applause] that's Pattison on the cats depending on the play was garland rivers that shows you Patterson's ability to get up how athletic he can be but the penalty really changed the complexion of this whole Drive during this whole Drive we saw Washington come down the field run Powell football throws and short passes then they get backed up in the penalty with first and goal from the 17 or 18 and it's a whole different ballgame you have to throw the ball downfield but it did it advanced him to the 14 where they still at the second down and at first and goal remember at the 8th before so downfield Jaxson he must have heard you somebody transmitted that information down Dave Meredith number 96 in gym star celli again made the stop so now it's going to be third down and still 14 to go here's a situation last week where Don James called two or three draw plays early in the football game he don't want to risk an interception and call draws to put his field goal kicker who was very good Jeff Jagger in position to put three points on the board Jagger had four field goals out of five attempts last week hunt Jackson in the backfield [Applause] takes the draw it's working the tide in check that Rob Jones the tight end and he's to the seven and it's fourth down we're like Jones's injured there as well well he's had a history of injury let's hope that's nothing serious once again you millon puts the ball on money but he saw his eyes looking downfield at the secondary again he has to get the ball into the endzone for the touchdown he's just hoping that he'd get the ball to Raj Owens and perhaps he can break a couple of tackles and get in the end zone but certainly he did not and they'll attempt the field goal here now in fourth down cheng'er last week's longest was 36 this will be a 25 yard a sophomore a little chip shop for it and he's [Music] so Jeff Jagger out of Kent Washington last year outstanding job for these Huskies and now he's hit five of his first six in 1984 Beckler and Michigan through the years have been tough here but if you want to come in and get things started in the right way you've done a void Washington Senate nine minutes and three seconds on that covering 73 yards really just stop themselves with the penalty otherwise it might have been a touchdown take her to kickoff [Music] and struggles out to the 10-yard line the Bombers was but it's been blown dead alright let's go back to their yard to join our host panel Brian before this colleagues football report Thank You Gary in addition to Washington versus Michigan there are many other important games today including Penn State at Iowa and Notre Dame at Michigan State co-chair Parseghian and I'll be keeping you up-to-date with scores and highlights at halftime and throughout the afternoon on our college football report we'll see you later let's now go back to Gary and Pat Gary Thank You Nora we'll look forward to that here's our score three to nothing a good start now on that [Applause] [Music] lion Holmes makes a stop on Bob Perryman tomorrow an NFL doubleheader on CBS sports featuring an NFC battle between the Chicago Bears here to a toe in the Green Bay Packers then of the doubleheader game any of you will see the Eagles take on the Cowboys we sure now to check the local listings they Mike Ditka has those bears rolling their defense is playing Burris they are three linebackers now in defensively for Washington's second down and eight lockers you see 39 making the blip sit Nelson the tight end and hit immediately by Jim Rogers a lot of work therefore not much of a gain really Roger says an interesting story splice broken he's our one time he was minding his own business of the bar and some guy started a fight almost poked his eye Adi Atta he and his hand when he punched it he flies around the football field he's the kind of guy that John Madden would love he's lying all over the place making tackles you want him on your side there's your time left in the first forty third and five for the Wolverine [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so really perimeter [Applause] but senior out of Southfield Michigan well Vince beam is one of those fluid type of athletes now that you ever think you see Bo Schembechler the first quarterback yep throw the football he's got a different philosophy he is throwing the football he's got a man who could do it in Harbaugh he throw the ball right - Vince be the only place could get it being ran a disciplined route to pick up the first down and that's the name of his game is discipline he runs into perfection 27 Michigan about their whole Harbaugh was an operating her Jerald ye the power forward across the 32 the 31 Tony Lewis made the stop Don James mirrors Bo Schembechler and probably for good reason they both started in Ohio Midwestern background same type offenses and we have played our first quarter here in Michigan Stadium three to nothing the Huskies would the lead in this the eighth meeting between the two [Music] college football Michigan Stadium just a beautiful afternoon in Ann Arbor Michigan started [Music] peoples and Ron Holmes made the stop and as you look at the first 15 minutes Washington look at their dream to say well that is the key statistic there normally when you think about Michigan football team you think of them controlling the football but Washington had a very impressive drive there in the first down in the first quarter which got them to three points they still didn't give up that touchdown to that they made him settle for the field goal or keeping out ten quarters without a touchdown scored rushing on the 41st now for hard law they're even out of bustles Bay Massachusetts you gotta be tough you come from Buzzards Bay right we should give any most valuable city award this year that's up there among well he was an MVP last week scoring three touchdowns the 89 yard he rushed the ball 17 times this is something new again in Bo Schembechler defense his fullback carrying the football more - cribbage just across the 43 it will be second down seven Wolverines [Music] sophomore out of Titusville Florida Jim Krakowski Tim me amber made the stop white is an excellent runner tackle the tackle but also what they like about eating taxable soil and he cuts in watch number 51 Reggie Rodgers overwash here's the man who's a basketball players his first year of football since high school and last week he had a play against a passing team and drop-off and coverage and play soft this week Bo Schembechler wanted to run right at him and see if he can panel the run - it has to be much more physical a different type of game plan six seven ways to 35 first down and to be very close all right let's check a couple of other scores on this college afternoon West Virginia Don Nehlen and his team-leading Virginia Tech 7-nothing that was a first down by the way for the Michigan Wolverines and North Carolina leading the midis of Navy that have a tough time moving down the Tholian talent they outstanding running back line of scrimmage now at the 49 of Washington 13 11 to go in the first half damn time will be joining at O'Brien and era of RC games and our future go to the gas but Lindsey Nelson I think you're going to why can't marrying into the backfield [Applause] Steve Albert III inter Street contrast there if you saw Jim Harbaugh's eyes there - you saw him actually looking downfield at the coverage he yet he still did run the football Alfred is a sophomore as you look now at 73 Doug James James out of Louisville he's upset that offensive line that is a concern they've lost Tom Dixon Stefan Humphries the Oreo and other guard the scene of mass-producing but they're still not where they want to be I play like a Michigan line well they didn't give Harbaugh much protection last weekend running both show Becker's offense they're at the great wall sucking down 11 for the Wolverines [Applause] being chased away from her - Rajesh look to run to the portal to the 40 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he can ad-lib a little bit butI invitation think sometimes you don't expect this of a man who has six three and two hundred pounds but jim harbaugh could run the ball very very well he's looking downfield to protection again this is the concern that beau had about his protection to many people and Harbaugh face but then he turns a negative play into a positive play he's going to duck a little right he gets low oh yes he did right to the underneath Tim peoples you know number 79 on that play Doug Miller or clay Miller actually threw a block with his helmet did you see that coming off the kraaho field speaking of fights we've got a good one coming up this weekend Hitman Hearns oh yeah the Detroit hit minute knee against Hutchins once you the Wichita State non Hitman had to no hit man just and slew of gold and from Belmont Woodward into dirty stakes that'll be very interesting to so we got a lot coming your way the kind of a helmet is that a decorated man well it's going to be third guy he just missed the first half polite running picked up almost 11 yard [Music] marliss Funt mode Washington has recovered [Applause] and Watchers comes up with it Oregon he is a spiritual leader defensively for this husky team and from the 35 Washington will take over at the 1143 mark [Applause] when you take one of the grout on this replay that will reconstruct what happened Tim me amber the line back was right there in the middle of the screen for Huskies he gets his right elbow right in on the ball right there the ball pops loose and Gerald white that's the big turnover on me amber now watch again he's there in the middle of the screen his right elbow is gonna come up and strip the ball at a Gerald White's arms white is diving for the first down the amber is always around the football last week he had three interceptions he recovered a fumble last week as well then he caused one right here they feel he's as good as a bad go to 35 the drive stalls Washington at the 1143 mark with a three to nothing lead in the second quarter Ron cookie Jackson gets close to the 40 yard line Mike Mallory made the stop once again we have not seen Jacques Robinson the other tailback from Rose Bowl Fame who's the MVP is a freshman but that shows you again as effective as Jackson is they've got another guy equal in Rick Rogers of Michigan the same situation there as well he had a thousand yards last year [Music] [Applause] balance in Washington she hath Rick fitting Benny as what they call NFL statistics as far as size she's 6 3 1035 very heralded recruit along with Chris Chandler of a year ago the quarterback is number three now they got two of the best players come out of the state in a long time very good receiver as well they've been throwing the football a lot to their full backs let's get a tuck it in run [Music] [Applause] skaar Sally and Joe gray now that do you think he obviously did he just take off and go [Music] [Applause] really a most pressure you can put on the defense is having a quarterback we can get out to the corner and have the option of running or throwing the foot West Virginia's added to their advantage at Navis now store [Music] yes December first number 14 will go back Suellen walk-in [Applause] for the 15 lions and opening [Applause] to the 28-yard 41-yard check and an excellent 14-yard return why she didn't read another on the strength of a 25-yard field goal by Jeff and this is the best field position now the michigan's hand started ride as always [Music] did not play well last week against Northwestern and is that characteristic of Don James as teams like Michigan go out and study that precisely right you see I will see how they do two blocks to the 30-yard line CBS Sports is proud to announce our continued association with a Chevrolet scholarship program as we did last season Pat and I will be selecting a Chevrolet MVP from each team as part of every 84 CBS sports comic football telecast and Chevrolet will then honor those selections by donating $1000 who eats Colleges general scholarship fund to help advance the education of deserving students in their this is a forty-year we've had this chevrolet scholarship the 30-second delay [Music] extra bag [Applause] good jobs gamble he has the first day and he's hit out of the [Applause] at that time he lost his vision as to where the field in it take another look at the late hit on Jim Harbaugh now he's running for his life another impromptu play he just cannot defense the defend against this he clearly steps out of bounds right - the official [Applause] interestingly enough that Michigan has gone away for the option they didn't take our walk and let that well told us that yesterday personal foul the defense first down well he's been spoiled a little bit because he had Steve Smith who was so fast [Applause] Jim Rogers he is an aggressive safety and really you want that out of your strong safety but you have to temper it now but it kind of that abound captain to lay off there's a good common sense the Harris white to the 35-yard life and his Michigan's seventh first down play and they begin to throw the ball in first down huh we talked to some people last year about Michigan and that was one of the characteristics they did not roll the ball at first down defenses knew that so far today they have not done them well you know we had a conversation with Don James he is not convinced in Michigan who's gonna throw that much as I keep reading they're gonna throw more and more and he just had to be shown here today that that's actually going to happen Jamie Morris now at last five foot settlers fishermen as the tailback and here we go this is a brother at Gilmore's for the Giants formerly of Syracuse Tim the amber made to stop and Bo Schembechler cannot say enough about 23 calls him cute spot 7 has the long arms but he's one of the few freshmen to ever play in the first game at a running back spot you ever think Bo would call a player cute Michigan's play selection however it is kind of cute look at what do you mean Michigan's play selection really on 1st and 2nd down has been this pounding the football grinding the football out then they're gonna have to loosen up here and throw the football downfield they're down at sticks for the Wolverines [Music] excellent job by Joe Kelly this linebacker he led him in tackles last week which by the way was the most of any player in the pac-10 he's going to hurt himself flopping around like that Jim Harbaugh has excellent protection member this is the concern that beau had last with never very good protection but Joe Kelly read his eyes the whole way now Harbaugh looked at his receiver the whole time and allowed Joe Kelly the defensive linebacker to follow his eyes little frustration college football up by Joe Kelly looked like breakdancers away going to be now a 52-yard attempt by Bob Mercer [Applause] [Music] this would be a record for it [Applause] last year beat Iowa the last seconds a new record there were three men that were tied at 51 laughter a Bergeron at Bob wood and now we have a new ho-hum just another 52-yard had always been trying to gain weight each pizza all the time he just can't gain any weight but you have that same problem well that's right I'm glad you noticed kicking off will be slopey they have real specialists here they are Bergeron who kicked some field goals and slopey who kicks off hope he started last years of field goal kicker and then lost the job to burger I Vonzell Hill and he's out to the 23 yard line [Applause] we have just been told by our CVS management that we will be in the Rose Bowl UCLA and Nebraska the Cornhuskers a number one ranked team in the country and some of you will see Iowa against Ohio State and you talk about two excellent games on week number two on CBS we're just glad to be part of it glad to have you with us whoa [Applause] [Music] [Applause] replaced a tailback jock Robinson these two the 26 yard line doc Robinson last year had weight problems fifteen pounds or the kind of career forecast for him but make no mistake about it he has ability we had that big freshman year he had nine hundred yards as a sophomore but but he's what Don James is concerned about is him getting his shoulders turned squared along a scrimmage and running upfield seems like he's trying to break everything for a touchdown and seven [Music] [Applause] [Music] the first down and that has been their big play throwing to the full-back this is the adjustment that the Michigan defense is going to have to find the answer to is finding a way to cover the full-back out of the backfield of Washington that's the fourth time they've completed that pass it's a very safe and easy throw it keeps drives our lives keeps the chains moving a good call by Don James [Applause] first down Patterson and Green will be split to the top of your screen [Applause] with great emotion leathers across the 35 to the 37 Michigan defenses had to play a lot on this first half you don't figure a team very often to come into Michigan Stadium and play with poise it's intimidating for instance when beau beat Miami last week he is now 15 Oh in home openers here for the type of offense that Washington has played the slow methodical brother of office lunatics at home [Music] and I'm older now is come in at linebacker the defensive coordinators son wall Hut to the 42 yard line he'll be a couple of yards short of the first down Joe gray 92 made the stop admin stone gray i watch al census they're all picked 10 nose guard yesterday he was in such pain they wanted to play he had one of those electric stimulator salon he's back trying to get her ready said trouble all the time so gray 92 as had to fill in for him since he was really upset he want to play so bad we'll see if they run the in motion goes hunting the Texan is there [Music] [Applause] [Music] rivers who will hit you they think he's gonna have a great future out of camp [Applause] and that's going to break up fourth down really it was the first bad throw we seen by melon haired this afternoon but I'm surprised they've been so successful throwing the full-back into the flat really should probably do that until they take it away forced him to take that fight away from you before you go to something else at 14 yard return you see what Cleveland's [Applause] he's gotta save 25 well he in high school was the Ohio high school back of the years while the yard returned a 41-yard punt be in order to Don James of Washington voted the coach the number one coach to the country by Sports Illustrated it was interesting I asked him yesterday who he thought the best coach in the country was he kind of laughed and said right across the sideline motion Beckler he was right up there I said less than 10 they have been first down for the 29 years white and this time some reaction and that's Reggie Rogers man who's played basketball his brother Don talked him into going out for football the outstanding safety for UCLA this was the question question mark that Don James had could he handle a physical type of team like Michigan you saw him kind of weed his way to two or three players give him a shoulder here give my shoulder there then boom he's right there for the tackle on Gerald wife so far he has answered Don James question about him skip all their system head coach said the first day he came out for practice we knew he was a ploy suck it down 12 [Applause] nobody open [Applause] it'll bring up third down that one thing I'd like to develop a book that we talked about Don James and Bo Schembechler two outstanding coaches solid programs great stability and a lot of what's been in the newspapers lately about cheating and the problems and the probation it's kind of refreshing as well it really shows you that two coaches can run programs and still be successful without resorting to those things boas says some interesting things he thinks the cheaters are the ones you have to be most concerned is such a distraction cuz you're always trying to cover something up he said it's not murder occurred today and it's overdone 12 [Applause] intercepted Joe Kelly [Applause] the 25-yard line at Joe Kelly as put Washington in excellent position Los Angeles Jefferson High School fastest linebacker eight you saw how he took off with a ball well we saw a little earlier his disappointment when he dropped an interception this time we'll watch hard ball the Harbaugh is following his receiver the whole way as really as a poor selection and Joe Kelly is right there the ball was thrown right to him this time he holds on to it secures the football is actually fumbled out on the ground looked like Ron Holmes number nine he picked it up but Joe Kelly picks up the interview ticks off the Jim Harbaugh's picks on the 25 [Music] three all our score Robinson inside the 20-yard line mate Rodgers now playing nose guard and if there's any man that will not condone the turnover it's that guy Bo Schembechler [Applause] you know last week against Miami he was just absolutely unbelievable they had six interceptions of Kosar - fumble recoveries so it's reversed a little bitter remember Washington for seven turnovers last week as well for for the Huskies diving forward may have gotten the first down Brad Cochrane made contact but he slipped forward and that may be enough Robinson out of San Jose California he let the packed in and rushing as a sophomore last year while the average over six yards of carry was under 300 yards for the year that's just too much talent for number 28 that kind of first down at the 14th [Music] here they had a penalty touchdown rushing again they're moving that line forward good line blocking an interesting place selection by Don James it's really been the first counter play we've been seen by Washington Washington has come out and pounded the ball off tackle with their tail backs they've run some plays where they sprinted you milling out and he's dropped back and past but that time was the first counter action that he's seen trying to move Michigan's linebackers getting them out of position there's your time left in this first half dream suck it down seven inside the 10 - about the 7 it's going to bring up a third down that's Anderson 57 at halftime we saw this piece earlier and I'm really excited about it Lindsey Nelson talking about fielding Yost in the great Michigan team of 1901 no it is a beautiful piece but here you see Jack Robinson and this is what Don Jean wants to see more than him making tough 2 3 4 yard runs and not looking for the cutback Lane all the time getting his shoulders turned toward the defense where he can pick up yards and a baller comes in replacing Andersen alive [Applause] [Music] created motion vellum to throw and out of bounce those live jokes and he's short it's going to be fourth down well that's the second time rod Jones has done that today and I know this is he has not played tight in much you're going to measure it but it's the second time he has done this now rod Jones is third and three remember a situation like this when you're driving for touchdown it's absolutely critical that the receiver know where the first down markers are and make sure you run the route accordingly it looked like he stepped inside the first down marker that might be that inexperience we said he's had freakish injuries breaking a leg last year and maybe he did get the first down but looked like initially he did not well we'll see what kind of called on James is going to make to who I think he got it didn't he yes he did okay I take it back right boys I'm sorry anybody back there in Richmond California watching this game we didn't mean it but seriously it was a good point because earlier he didn't spot that forward mark and this time he did now Ron Jackson's going to come into the ballgame why in last week's game here they ran toward the full-back Ron Walt hunt every time down against against the northwestern down inside the five yard line and Midland wants a timeout timeout 1:45 to go on the first half three all at Ann Arbor [Applause] this is Chevrolet Corvette excuse them we have two fullbacks in what do you expect with hunt and fini in there well I just saw the one game against Northwestern last week and Walt hunt they line him generally up at the wing back rather than the full-back position they sent him in motion last week against Northwestern ran to his side which they change the strength formation was bottled the block of Walt hunt you know they call it sometimes as soon tied in I know Terry Donahue but michigan's watch the film [Music] you see him safely run they didn't back straight ahead football that time by Rick Finney now they knew the coaches were watching the films too this again they've have four downs to get the ball into the end zone here it's critical and here's what this offensive line they concerned the Don James has about this young offensive line of his is utmost because this is the toughest part of the field for these guys to move nine ten defensive players out because everybody is closing in on the offensive player second goal the two but now in motion Mewsette for the touchdown [Applause] and this crowd is partisan Wolverine crowd just sitting whole stunned right now it's nine to three another impressive drive after that interception by Joe Kelly Chris Chandler will hold on this placement by Jagger and sableye at the point after beautiful hole for Rick Finny the big fullback of Washington those offensive line we talked about them you going to see a big hole open up down on the goal line is third and three just bottles a block of a senator Dan Ernest II into the end zone for six points [Music] I should tip with a 10 to 3 lead we'll look again at that 2 yard run by Rick Finny little big 235 pounds sophomore fullback for the touchdown really was set up by the interception by Joe Kelly was only a 7 play job to drive a very opportunistic defense in offensive Washington and characteristic of both of these coaches but in the drive we saw jock robinson run off tackle a couple of times as you watch the time of possession who saw the big catch by Raj Owens for the first down but get the drive alive that was a look at Jamie Morris back deep for this kickoff as Jagger will boot it off just interesting enough Michigan last year never trailed at halftime here at home and last year they trail Washington in Seattle ten to three at halftime now North Carolina is up there later the crumbs Club that means of all [Music] all this year visited the kicked sales out of the end zone if you start from the 30-yard line and they've been concerned about Jagger he has had a trouble all three season long trying to keep that ball from being kicked out it really does seem like kind of a silly rule though you're penalizing the kickers for performing well there is some debate that Gahan James is not particularly happy with the rule just a little guy to draw action Washington was defending against the pass and boom Jamie Morrison little back comes in play up situation at Harbaugh is [Music] [Applause] he's built loaded he's six foot raised to 30 the first sack of the game and to the 37 yard line timeout now for Michigan Michigan offense looks a little bit numb out there to a surprise I don't think they expected this watch and defense to be as aggressive as they are Don James is actually calling his entire defense over to him to talk to him well Harbaugh's best phase of his game has been scrambling he's run very well has not been very effective in the passing game both teams now have two timeouts remaining with 31 seconds left in this first half later today live championship boxing Thomas Hitman Hearns the super welterweight title go on the line against the WBC's third ranked contender Fred Hutchings and you'll see fit to fight the handicap Triple Crown winner dual defending champion slow gold in the woodwork live from New York's Belmont Park that's all coming up all right here on CBS Sports Saturday you do that pretty well impressed old farm boy I used to ride a couple of horses but not quite in the same caliber here in Phoenix and I've got donkey Baron 37 now after that boss at second and 16 Garret still be that 10 yards short of the first down Tony Lewis made the stop throwing the football to timeouts maybe Boris comes in and they're not using a timeout to hurry and the man just kicked a 52-yard field goal a little while ago - it surprises me look at this weird guy go and that will [Applause] why she did leaves college football on CBS we'll continue after this commercial message and a word from your local station [Applause] but since the same score we added half time last year in Seattle 10:00 to 3:00 and in the background you can see the band here the University of Michigan marching band what a spectacle it is what an outstanding moment of pageantry in college football that's a take off by the way on ghostbusters 10 3 our halftime score in each week at halftime we have a special feature called the echoes of college football one of the grand men has been around college football so many years Lindsey Nelson is going to be our host let's go down to Knoxville Tennessee for this week's feature for a 10:00 to 3:00 Washington leads the Michigan Wolverines here in Michigan Stadium pad at the start of this telecast he said one thing you melon of Washington has to take on a bigger role and it's a precisely what he did in the first step in more last week you really didn't throw the ball very well this week he has these ways 10 of 12 for 71 yards he's kept drives alive he's thrown the ball really short controlled type of passes Gary well interestingly enough four of those have gone to his full backs and Michigan's gonna have to find a way to adjust that they have to take that fullback away by putting another line back not let him out of the backfield time of possession it's a startling stamp it really isn't when you consider Bo Schembechler teams you look they're Washington's had it six more minutes than Michigan now and they've been times where they've gone down and done something with the ball they had the turnover and we saw here's the Rick fini you can see him going the end zone at the end of one of those long dry they've been opportunistic they've held the ball they've controlled the football it's been short runs and short passes call Tamia culminating in short runs like this one by Rick Finney in the end zone for six points one thing that I think a question that enters your mind is you think Michigan could be a little bit flat you win you defeat the number one team Miami I am sensing that from this Michigan team they do seem flat they don't realize what a good team Washington is they're a very aggressive football team and I don't think they realized how good you million could be Jim Harbaugh needs some success especially throwing the ball he scrambled well with it he did scramble with the ball but there's been good coverage by the Washington Sector I have not seen too many wide-open receivers of you nope I haven't it's 10 3 our halftime score and college football on CBS will continue after this commercial message and a word from your local station CBS Sports presents college football sponsored by the US Army a place to be all you can be the front-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla sedan for 1984 now at your local Toyota dealer and by ACDelco the smart parts [Music] [Applause] Jim both ready to start the second half 10 3 Washington with a lead and statistically we pointed out the time of possession total yards look at the yards passing but surprising to Michigan thrown for 103 yards but they only had three points on the board turnovers has been a key to actually seen the 1 turnover by Joe Joe Kelly the interception by Joe Joe Kelly converted into a touchdown by the Huskies Jagger will kick off Michigan won the toss to start this game they waved off and so they now will receive and this man will do the honors Jamie Morris out of Massachusetts he was the most valuable player in the Massachusetts all-star game and when Bo first sign he thought he's got to be a wide receiver he's not big enough to play running back but he's proved differently 10 3 the Huskies or she's going to bring it out of there and it might not been a bad decision Missy's to the 15-yard line that's tough when you have to run that far to get to the football that's why you don't see too many freshmen playing for Bo Schembechler harbaugh we mentioned did not have a good first half throwing the football and Bo Schembechler now the last-minute instructions 15 yards and the interception really was the key that's how Washington is scored it's important I talked them a little bit yesterday what he really wanted to do and felt that they could do against this Washington husky defense is really throw those out cuts to Vince bean save shore passes but they have not thrown the ball went to the first down really what cats in the first half for the 15-yard line Michigan raela [Music] [Applause] - about the 19 yard line good reaction that time by people's well you see Michigan they really had actually bad field position the one there at the last one surprised me when they ran off the clock when they started the first two positions on the 11 on the 20 football you can't keep [Music] motion blur [Music] the football he felt he had the man who could do it again he's backed up though on the 19 yard line the Wolverines away in the second half our ball chased by Lewis the catch made by [Music] and that Suisun the scouts are so high on Vince bein a nine yard completion first down at the second time we've seen nice footwork by Vince beam as well but if you notice the different types of philosophies Michigan has thrown the ball down he just saved a short pass really to get Jim Harbaugh back some some some momentum we saw of course melon throws but pull back four times a nice Michigan has to go maybe perhaps in shorter routes for Harbaugh but that was a big equation for Harbaugh that much most of the 35-yard line the amber and people's again on the tackle and this is a shocker in East Lansing Notre Dame lost last week to Purdue of the Big Ten and now trail 17 nothing and that is just hard to fathom now you wonder about Gerry Faust and they've had some some very good people with the recruiting calls and lists they had included very good people at Notre Dame the last four or five years ago software paper asked for his recitation this way nothing going on that way and there's a penalty flag thrown Tony Lewis 95 stopped that play instantly as Bob Herriman ran into him parity penalties in this game Don James a song to the head said he says nothing goes on that football field it doesn't come through my headset you listening to us you think yeah I'm sure he wants our help legal procedure against Michigan [Music] you're trying to get your offense going you don't want that we saw an episode a lot to go on the making Michigan State leading Notre Dame and and Panther Belk leading Bobby Ross's Terrapins Vanderbilt can really throw the football they put receivers all over the football field a little here any offense what this does now to Michigan makes it second and nine in the second and four obviously before it's a run down now you're in a passing situation Morris is in the backfield along with Perry but still haven't seen Rick Rogers who assists to the big 10 and rushing a year ago mrs. boss he's after the 35 three yards short of the first down the amber people's again well there was a lot of Running Room that time they cleared him out the offense applied that time did the job the cute little man Jamie Morris now Washington was playing fast defense remember at second and nine and Jamie Moore's hid behind some offensive lineman and he runs right over the official as the official gets knocked down but a good strong tackle by ten peoples of free safety of Washington you mentioned earlier other official is it a little bit of trouble there you knew that is its Bob Pickens he played at Nebraska but he played with paths I don't think this unofficially wants to get in that posture again have a man shaken up now pretty small has been hurt number five there veteran linebacker which means they're going to bring in a freshman now to replacing Bowie eighths out of Lebanon Oregon will have to replace small and this is a very touchy spot for Washington the outside linebacker they do not have the depth they'd like to have they have two freshmen backing up the starters if you well know I was going to make the point about Tim people's who came up made a terrific stuff there on Jamie Morrison you know UCLA has had those great free safeties done Rodgers can easily I've been favorably invested people today the wide receiver many wide receivers have found it go down to Sam Nelson [Music] Jetson defending Pattinson quarterback you want to throw that ball obviously over the right shoulder he was looking the wrong way well I think this was Jim Harbaugh is Jim Harbaugh had Nelson open early are you gonna see him or what he doesn't do his ex he can pull up and stop and plant his feet but he see he's throwing off the wrong foot there he should have perhaps stopped then he could have drilled the ball over deeper but he uh naturally threw the ball over the wrong shoulder and behind Sid Nelson Harbaugh rushed himself loose their body Robins the putt did not get this one well at all tattled immediately at the 23-yard line that was a 40-yard kick not artistic it turned out to be pretty effective [Applause] 12:42 go third quarter 10 3 washington with a lead they have the football at their own 23 oh dear okay [Applause] maybe a yarn Mike Hammerstein they'll miss an interesting story fat in all our research we did this week we're trying to get all the pronunciations right so the Hammerstein's Mike and Mark two starters there's one of them Mike the one upset is at Hammerstein or Hammerstein well the kids told us cameras T then came back said yes I think it's Hammerstein they don't even know that's their last name dad's big all folks so we'll say Hammerstein today [Applause] suck it down I have sense Michigan's tends to be a little bit better well that's just hit this defense Michigan's offense is having its problem what do you do the defense has to come up with a big play up as they did last week against Miami defense has to force a turnover or special teams has to come up with a big play where the defense has to hold them here here is 37 third and eighth and got Washington backed up it's a critical time because defense the boats [Applause] hundred at three thousand to the largest drop Washington displayed before in a regular season game by the Rose Bowl wide open his Patterson 7/7 Washington [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Madison in last year Letterman catches with 38 just got a 73-yard touchdown pass I am terribly impressed with you knowing and you know I don't think watching it last week he didn't really play very well against Northwestern John Don James is critical there were some papers back in Seattle that question maybe that the signal ought to start this way that's been put to rest Jagger point after the Chandler got it down good job by Chris Chandler their third straight quarterback with 17 to 3 you mutt millon showed remarkable poise and composure and shows you how he can take a hit he says play-action fake remember it is a third nine situation you have to blind backers comin right up the middle he stays in the pocket he gets hit hard from the outside but delivers an absolutely beautiful throw over two defenders that is the most difficult throw one can make and of course Patterson makes a nice catch a run to the end zone but here's the hit every quarterback knows you're gonna get hit after the ball and here's the look at Tim juice are selling as he runs right into humility but he knows we touch down and he's pretty happy about this now with a 17 to 3 lead that was the longest the ninth longest pass completion in Washington history Jagger this kickoff is going back we'll be Jamie Morris [Music] you melon had the strong arm and he needed it on that why she made a good point he started out God [Applause] this one hip and they'll take it at the 20-yard line next week to outstanding football games one of them from the Rose Bowl Nebraska ranked number one UCLA picked number one a lot of the polls they've got bono the quarterback Nebraska tried to replace Turner Gill and then they're trying to rebuild their offensive line everything else is in place all their defensive starters are back at Ohio State night Mike Tom sack this is healing now I understand that Lakes coming around he's going to start today but you have four teams right there who can put some offensive points on the board exciting weekend extra week here on CBS from the 20 Michigan now trails 17:3 a real hip put on Morris and hit by 10 me amber he's the guy that not james's it so many times it's the car they cannot lose this man I'm hot gent Defensive Player of the Week maybe the best game he ever played last week against Northwestern Mike's collisions he had three interceptions last week he keeps his pace up is they have 33 interceptions on the year [Applause] Morris again and Horseman comes out of there he has a first job [Music] Peppard DJ those here last year we just keep running into freshman running backs to comply and small was think of Alan Pinkett at Notre Dame those little running backs that can hide behind the defensive linemen see the defensive linemen can barely even see Jamie Morris all of a sudden he comes out of nowhere and before you know it he's so quick he's behind you actually it might be an advantage being that small I've always said they're gonna remind you of Joe Washington from the size standpoint first down at the 40 this is Gerald white right to the 45 per Kowski 56 over there so they get Morris a breather and come back with white and they still have Rick Rogers so they have three excellent tailbacks they can throw at you second down and four from the 45 this dr2 has been interesting for Michigan's first time on first down that really they've been starting to do something the first half they generated no offense on first down and found themselves in passing situations or who she can reel in Washington community Michigan answer six foot eight former basketball player receiver hears wide again about a yard maybe two short of the first down the amber made the stop [Music] they're still being very patient not trying to get it all back at once here running the football well here's the kind of situation they're in now on a third one third and two situation which a michigan's offense should be and now if they convert here on a first down then you going to have to throw the football but I thought if they have to do is give Harbaugh a chance to cross in shorter route scream basket back he's got the first down [Music] [Applause] what party is he running for now this was the bounce play that we talked about at the very top of the show and you're gonna see Gerald white follow the block this fullback on the strong safety remember he kicked him out so he cut inside that block for a fake big gain in the first down remember the tailback has three or four different options on the bounce play for Michigan Morris comes back him is 68 yards in the game Morris 52 first down [Applause] too wide for vents be Musti Jackson defending on the play let's check some other stores North Carolina still leads maybe that's a half-time Wisconsin trailing Missouri that's in Columbia Johnson has a good football team they concern Michigan that's their next opponent and Vanderbilt still leads marelit 14 Wisconsin cups here next week and Bo Schembechler feels they're the sleeper in the conference I am still losing and ten for Michigan being chased by small Harbaugh's at the second sack for the Huskies who's out of there shaken up earlier but he's come back again well this is the big concern of Bo Schembechler was the protection of Jim Harbaugh last week against Miami even though we won as we look at some more scores but that offensive line if they can have an opportunity to win this football game now it's third and forever they're going to have to give Harbaugh an opportunity to throw the football small is so tough to block the defensive coaches say part of it is his statute six-foot he's so quick the beat he's been in there a couple of times in this game tough to block nineteen [Applause] and receiver but again too tall for it and it's fourth down [Music] well they had something going there for a while and then the big sack and Marty Robbins will come in to punt the football [Applause] going back deep will be Danny Green Green has been their big play guy but thus far hasn't really gotten untracked this season we have not called his number much today have we really dropped to pass early did not catch a ball last week very again he's going to get [Applause] did they save it or not [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yard kick [Applause] this ball crossed the paint plane of the end zone and brought it back out to the 20 you can see Rodney Lyles number 80 actually carried the ball into the end zone and knocked it back the balance of the end zone sea officials moved it out to the 20-yard line you see what [Music] of the 20-yard line Washington Rick penny after the 25 the last two times now that the Huskies have had the football they've scored this is Rodney Lyles who was the Big Ten Defensive Player to wait with three interceptions they use him as a story designed and defense around him they named it after Ted Hendricks and the Raiders to bring them at three or four different places he's a specialist he's a game breaker he put a lot on Bernie Kosar [Music] Ted Hendricks put some pressure on you through the years who was named after that defect why was there he can't get his Washington real crack and a fumble recovery and somehow could get on it we just talked about him being around the football last week so much in causing havoc historic defense here this time he's coming on a blitz gets blocked out but goes up mixup on the pitch the ball is on the ground on an astroturf it kind of bounces around takes his funny bounces he can't get a handle on it looks like jock robinson number 28 is gonna make the ultimate recovery [Applause] [Applause] short of the first down as jock Robinson so they'll have to get rid of the football Tim Anderson making the tackle for Michigan we talked about Rodney Lyle is actually kind of Venus specialist or Keith as you see more and more colleges do this Rivera throughout a birthing last year they did that with him jack toe real the linebacker at Southern Cal by doing that with him right now Rodney Lyles here at Michigan Ricky Huntley of Arizona the way they moved him around with creating specials on defense [Music] six minutes left in the third quarter we hit a low kick we'll have some opportunity to return [Applause] [Music] the Washington Huskies have recovered the football three turnovers now against Michigan that's lonzell Hill one over there let's pick it up again goodness gracious think Bo Schembechler is a little bit upset Tony Gant actually makes a nice little run it was a little kick the kind you returned putts pitted back down the sideline is prilae really trying to help his team obviously they're struggling the ball pops out right here to see a host of Washington players right there right in the game position in the playing field and they have first down looks like Rick penny was the guy that came up with it let's see number 30 watching coming over here now now there he is the other night then he got it and it's at the Michigan 49 yard line Michigan [Music] grant Cochrane of preseason all-american and he played Danny Green very very well you know Patrick has had some problems he actually left Michigan he went to the University of Colorado for six weeks they found out he had a chemical imbalance and they treated that he had such states of depression and now he's come back to be the kind of football player that any coach would like to have potential all-american you know you you can see him just it's coming on and on the temple goes in motion number 23 second chance maybe got a yarn Tim Anderson has made a lot of tackles in this game made that stop Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor boy Alabama was trailing in of course they lost a tough one last week Georgia Tech has some real good skilled people a lot of speed Robert LaVette in particular [Applause] [Music] and out of me another first down Gary that's the fifth time the full-backs come out of the backfield and caught the ball for a first down it was third and nine it's a good safe pass you'd like to see a little bit more of this perhaps for Michigan's offense to give Harbaugh a chance to get some of that pressure away from them but you see Finney number 30 who made the fumble recovery just slip out nobody's covering him it should be a linebacker in that area or a defensive cornerback and if you're in zone coverage but nobody's there it's a third nine situation he catches the ball turns his shoulders upfield first down says masterminded quite enough sincerity day that pullback play that's a fifth time they've been waiting one to the fullback good reaction that time that's Kevin Brooks on the bottom of all that he is 660 weighs 245 pounds all pick 10 of a year ago another way you can stop that fullback from coming out in the flat flight as having your linebacker as he's blitzing the quarterback really tie up the fullback run right into him you know you would think and there's good coaches we have here when you throw onto the fullback four times like that you'd made that adjustment take it away from him but it was open again [Applause] could say the competence of milling gadget it's really coming on is looking downfield again which in the past has been a pass for the second at 13 you got it his pony - missed last week's game because of knee surgery he's been rehabilitating that knee and he has the catch of 11 yards here's the tight end as you mentioned Tony Wroten another nice thing about melon he has spread his passes around he's thrown to the fullback the tailback and now here the tight end for a big play go Rodney Lyles we talked about the specialist he can drop in coverage he can put pressure on you here he is blitzing trying to get to you Milland nobody picks him up but he's a little bit late Don James really seems to know when miles is coming at when he's dropped maybe the right call third down and two of the better yard completion and that's opposed to the first out for Robinson as he stumbles forward let's see what the market Joe gray eventually made the stop and they're gonna have to measure to see very good offensive philosophy here coming in today by Washington a lot of times when you see you get a a team get ahead of Michigan seventeen to three late in the third quarter you're gonna see them get conservative run the football what is Don game James done first thing he did after the fumble recovery was throw deep to Danny Green who came back ran a couple of off tackle plays a counter play then it threw the ball a couple more times Washington is a very well-prepared football team today that is a first down Washington if they would win too they really have a schedule set up beautifully for him they play Houston at home and they play Miami of Ohio they could go to November 10th unbeaten when they go to USC and they do not play Arizona State and UCLA in the pac-10 so that is a game as a big game for them to possibly and they're going to get better and better we've seen the progress you millon is made in what week imagine him November 2 you spotted it on film if you look at this film after this game as opposed to last week there's no comparison they didn't get anything on that one they'e lost the Dave Meredith number 96 making the stop [Applause] and so it'll bring up a second down and 11 [Applause] Vence DeFelice number 90 comes in defensively for Michigan [Music] Michigan does not have the big kids they have the quick the active team Gary Moeller says were an excitable type defense fact he says Humber guys are too excited to hold the breakfast down last week against Miami before the game second and 11 Lennie's one of those guys I don't think I'll ever fall backwards he's always falling forward after the tackle it's interesting you mentioned I don't think he was tackled for a loss all last season Rodgers deep police make the stop Bennett's another third down kind of get the feeling right here that that Don James is trying to set himself up for a field goal go ahead 22 to 3 to take three scores by Michigan to beat them [Applause] hello mr. Rob is there a a halt read made that stop notice they ran the ball right in the middle of the field get ready for the field goal look at Rodney miles again the three big interceptions last week he's been coming hard today steps into the hole takes on a couple of blockers and really drives Robinson down to the ground so Jagger who earlier kicked a 25 yard field goal attempt to 38 yarder and Chris Chandler will hold Jagger has hidden get another one he's Savin quarter years six field goals thus far now it's 20 to 3 [Applause] [Music] taker who has two field goals today and his team now leading 22 three will kick at the 139 mark and Morris goes back [Music] [Applause] Jamie Morris well Michigan's got to throw the football Harbaugh as capable of that if they can't go of Harbaugh they do have another quarterback that they feel throws well that's Russ they say he's their pastor kicked him off beautifully as it away and making Morris run to the corner each time of a kick table one time he did kick it out of the end zone so J Kurt is a weapon for this Washington team from the twenty that's where Michigan will have at Harbaugh is still a quarterback Jim Harbaugh comes from the California background and it's so interesting to me how do you envision your position and what you want to be Harbaugh was coach's son here in Michigan he used to pass out hot dogs in the press box but you always want to play quarterback here for the Wolverines going to the west coast I suppose that California influenced helping the massive league that they have out there I think the weather just the attitude on the west coast about throwing the football the influence or the pro leagues out there dying to quarry out Bill Walsh this is Morris goes airborne that time just close to the 25-yard line I've been impressed with Jamie Moore's know he's a young freshman he's he's not very big but he's been very very aggressive one Wolverine is not pleased about the way things are going I'm sure Bo Schembechler is not as well on the 24 it'll bring up second down six [Music] he'll Lonnie Johnson 26 now has checked in and wide receiver he along with being Morris has 56 carries on six attempts trouble the third sack of the day my goodness Reggie Rogers this strong safety blitz there to Gary by Jim Rogers from the 39 came from the outside as well Tony Louis help he says football is my sport I'm not going to argument and I don't think Jim Harbaugh is it either [Applause] I just played for Marv Harshman of basketball now the tides on the scoreboard anyway they missed the point after a kick to field goals I need a complacent nice beautiful maybe a napkin is for the first down and Johnson took a shot what concentration he's not very big they list him to five Tampa that stretches this is a fine top of the screen Steve Johnson he's getting a double cover with him the safety is backing him up makes a nice cut beautifully thrown ball by Jim Harbaugh and of course 2016 people's there as make the stop but that's a third and 14 situation Michigan does not want to be in those connoisseurship situations they need to be throwing the ball on first one ten second and short that's the end of the third quarter 22 3 Washington with the ladies football we'll continue after this commercial message and a word from your local station we start the fourth quarter 22/3 washington with a lead and [Music] [Applause] there's a penalty flag over there I believe or is that a piece of debris I think Jim Rogers got ahold of the referees flag tiller but you Mirage it he is a wild man he came in we talked about him a couple times though he came off the corner and was not going to be denied as we look at the third quarter stats the real key there has been the turnovers see three turnovers by Michigan team and two of those turnovers have resulted in 10 Washington points had three sacks to that for sex now with that one that's right the last one Rogers just got his fourth he just was like a torpedo second down now cutting our ball getting the white this Washington defend all 260 pounds of he made the stop you know homes nearly had some problems he had a blood sugar problem he lost his weight he's lost all of his energy and they didn't know they'd be able to play but the start of the season but he's back now in Steve there's no one better really at rushing the passer but Bo Schembechler has to find a way to change momentum here this defensive Washington is just so fired up right now he needs a big play by us off one of his offensive stars to get something going there down in 21 Jamie [Music] Rogers and bestie Jackson over there they're looking across the way to see if he got the first down they're gonna major it looks like Jamie Moore's injured his ankle there too that's a blow because he has been that bright light off the blade for this place she could be so quick [Applause] you know but that was a short kind of pass Gary that we would like to have seen from Michigan most of the game nice safe pass gives harbor a chance to dump it off let a halfback run with the football and give him some confidence it is a first down [Applause] the last three Michigan third-down attempts they've thrown the ball they picked up 19 yards 14 yards in 21 yards for the first time now Pat Rick Rogers has come into the game here was her leading rusher of a year ago he's number 20 he gained a thousand yards six in the Big Ten at a high of a hundred and twenty five yards against Iowa there he is that's Jim there he goes and he's across the 45 to the 46 if Bo Schembechler is gonna go in to run the football here he's going to have to think up four or five six yards and a crack here because he's battling against the walking nearby exter michigan he did not do very well academically he was on the edge as far as making his grades and that made Bo very angry and so he's been in the doghouse did not play last week we admired both put some in the dog yesterday I live with a senior hi [Music] Jim Watchers again what a game he is playing that's the fourth turnover by this Wolverine offense [Applause] here's the play it's number 39 Jim Rogers is going to jump up in front the receiver mark array he read the play all the way stepped right in front of him mark Rea will really was not open never look just heavily right in front of or crank that we're waiting now on a penalty flag that was thrown let's see what it's all about face mask a five-yard penalty defense so that means that Washington will have the ball at the 34 Ford turnovers the Jim Rogers when you think about Envy she's in the game you got to look to he is an emotional leader on that defensive football team three Washington wobbly Jaxson it's tough to winter let's face it they've come in here pat they're places where you feel there are jinxes I remember you hated to play in Seattle against University of Washington have any time you went up to play a walking dinner with brain-eating it was cold and if you're a quarterback you always concerned about those kind of weather's weather situations but I don't know where else do you think it's difficult to play out LSU is close to lig you are supposed to be murdered Tennessee very difficult this place is one of them here but the Jets know jinxes are interesting we'll talk more about that or development the other battering ram out to the 38 yard line you know this is a difficult place to play really Washington has taken that home-field advantage away by playing so well ball control I'll take your crowd out of the game remember that early drive of nine minutes it just kind of put the fans on their hands and they haven't moved since but James has developed you half jinx is not only Pat in stadiums but little things that I'm sure you had to do before you thought you could play well tie your shoes research way superstition Jimmy has that superstition they're down six accented initially by Mallory and then Wiles there's skip pull all the assistant head coach copy to the defense ever he's been saying has been right then lined up in the right position all time as all day long as we said you haven't seen too many Michigan receivers running wide open skip Hall has done a very nice job we should highlight one guy all that Michigan team you pointed this out Mallory on that last tackle he's been all over it really has been he is their emotional leader has had a fine game breathe love the last return all what a kick is is we have to go out of bounds of the 21 yard line [Music] 10:49 levels 41 yard kick by this man Cleveland the Huskies are wedding [Applause] Gary bender with pat hate there's the time left to this game something lotion is Michigan the last time they lost at home was the 1982 that was to UCLA [Applause] I think it's good yet how that secondary is hitting and guess who knocked the ball out of his hands that's right Jim Rogers number 39 he has been incredibly aggressive and he did it yes--that's was broken his arm yeah it's broken he's remember early in the game where he got a penalty for hitting a guy like but I don't think he knows what to stop how would you like to get hit like this Gary you're not a very tough guy but try this one on oh yeah that'll make you start playing tennis or something tell you that really I really take that person she said I wasn't tough he's gonna have to be tough he's got to do that very often stopped at the 30 let's check out the games our me leading Colgate and she said earlier we'll have that army-navy game from Philadelphia this year Vanderbilt still leads Belton and Rutgers a plate Penn State up last week Missouri in third quarter of leading Wisconsin Kentucky over Indiana Indiana course bill honoree the new coach there Tech was still waiting the Crimson forward for the first down that is Eddie carrot and 4:32 played his high school football Milwaukee coming into the season Washington was picked as one of the favorites in the pac-10 Gary but there were small spurts another very good football team you see I you mentioned were picked by Sports Illustrated as their number one football team Arizona State although they claim Florida last week and of course southern cow is still a question mark so Washington certainly he is fruit themselves the last two mentioned they don't players on the state s CLA nears higher bar on a first down he's okay [Applause] do you ever do that [Applause] yep once a ball is deflected or hit by a player anybody can catch it in advance and this is exactly what happens Harbaugh is trying to just hit the ball a short little passer who's wide receiver it's deflected pops up he has really the president's to pick it up and pick up one four yards you never answered me interpreters that know I've been affected I did not let you just get rid of the ball anyway you could that's peen he just didn't have a chance he was hit by Watchers and all both of a huge man hit Harbaugh and got a brother gingerly after that get back to this pac-10 Don James said that he felt the team that brought their quarterback along the fastest would win the pac-10 there's seven new quarterbacks in the pac-10 this year well you melon has made tremendous strides from week one to week two so if that's the basis we're using it on Washington certainly has to be the favorite seven new quarterbacks in the conference that's really unusual they're down and it's going to get a first down damn Rogers again Harbaugh has really run the ball well today and a good call here by Bo Schembechler third and five and six they're having trouble picking up protecting Jim Harbaugh so what do you do you run a quarterback draw it's precisely what happened here he needed six yards goes back looks downfield in his coverage the offensive lineman did a nice job of kicking the defense out creating a big lane for Harbaugh a fine look might have been a facemask there as well that's good to see ha a receiver thousand football they say the ball has to be catchable before it's pass interference did you think there was interference or a collision I thought he just fell I don't know mark gres where Harbaugh got popped there in going to defense mark gres was a big play performer for Michigan last year he caught a 67 yard touchdown pass against Ohio State probably their fastest whiteout second attempt double coverage and the outside receivers beautiful protection that's his hey that's the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] but 20 yard completion defense being out of Southfield Michigan very fluid absolutely really the only offense they've had out of the passing game the wide receivers for Michigan has been number 25 Vince Beane he avoids the first defender we said there's double coverage you're going to see a safety behind him and come up again right there against the sideline makes a nice catch and concentrates actually turns you trying to make desperately trying to get the ball off Steve Alford was Zarate Harbaugh did a nice job of avoiding the sack getting rid of the ball so he's at least second and ten might be able to see on Harbaugh there he has tape on his chin he received a blow on his chin last week had to have some stitches and I said what's wrong with a BOCES we don't mention it we don't even want him to know he has just something to distract you tough playing quarterback for Boeing it no at dispersion what a sense of humor this week in Ann Arbor second down ten that was being very fine play by vesti Jackson 27 the accent you might recall broke that Arizona game open last year with an interception and took it all away you know read out if you're a quarterback in your face with a defense like Washington where you're getting lots of pressure you don't know how to do that usually there's a couple of things you can try to do to change that pace you can go on longer accounts change your rhythm you can run some trap place and draw a place and screen plays but it's seemingly everything that Michigan has tried Washington has been able to defend third and ten for motion and that is [Music] he has been all over the football field he's my MVP [Music] [Applause] if you can't vote yes Gary I can't let over I just was here with but you're right here's sim Nelson the titanium is opened early the ball was delivered late and loud Jim Rogers to drive on the ball and make the play he's got to get the ball to the receiver when they're open a little bit earlier Harbaugh again was under some pressure though which didn't allow him to live to deliver the ball on time Ella wasn't an interception only thing that getting chase he's back to the 15 these men had some time to grow that's a lot of running I'm still not able to get the first down Joe Kelly got him had albert after him double back gotta block and Washington will take over 718 left in this game can anyone here named a copier maker that's bigger than Rico Xerox Rico's bigger IBM Rico's bigger and we got to something about an ice blue Aqua Velva man let's recapture what's happened in this game in the first quarter Jago the 25 yard field goal gave him the lead and that first rod after a fumble recovery kicked her record 52-yard field goal then he scored just before the end of the three brilliant villain to Pattinson bastard 73 yards [Music] three times down to wet 23 Robinson out to the 30-yard line that we talked about the pact it looks is developed the big 10 if there's one thing the big tent has going for him they have a lot of quarterbacks returning our veterans and they have a lot of coaches like bolshevik they do have quarterbacks the four of my belief in California as well but you have four coaches in the Big Ten including that man right there have over 100 wins but after last week the way Michigan manhandled my handi you figured a favor Michigan is the favorite seven quarterbacks returned in the Big Ten some were picked on the all-american list pull back close to the first down rivers battery and on the stop miss Michigan team must meet Wisconsin here next week they may be the surprise the big tent Wisconsin Dave McLane it's got a very good football team although they're losing today I saw Wisconsin was aid was an assistant with Bo Schembechler for some time as Iowa's got the big game against Penn State today and that was the first down by Washington this Michigan defense has been on the field seemingly this entire second half hasn't it seen that with you yeah well of course in the first half that first quarter what was that it was absolutely incredible how much they were on the field nine minutes on the first drive I'm a possession Washington's favor now millets putting a timeout 6:24 on this beautiful afternoon here in Ann Arbor Ron Holmes and his teammates with the lead [Applause] if you want to do work like an expert it helps to have the mind of a craftsman Sears craftsman electronic power tools are so advanced they practically think for themselves their microprocessor memories and electronic sensors give you more precision more control and the same quality that's made bathroom bench power and hand tools America's best sellers do you reservation electronics if you qualify you can get a guaranteed reservation for the training you want up to twelve months in advance even if you're still in high school [Music] we'll see you have to graduation [Music] Walter Payton began this season needing 688 yards to become the all-time rushing leader the chase is on the Bears and Packers among the games tomorrow on CBS Sports six 24 left 20 to 3 Washington leaves a Michigan Wolverine Washington after shutting down Northwestern last week is going to - and all against the big ten the way things look right now Houston Cougars got two Husky Stadium next week breed and lonzell Hill will be splitting to the bottom of the screen on a first down from the 33 veniat motion whistles stopping everything the Big Ten have really had a excellent Saturday a week ago Purdue I've said Notre Dame Michigan upset Miami of Florida and there's that game we just mentioned it's a big one being played in Iowa Hawkeyes are they three to nothing lead dead ball false start I'll have report on that game Toronto is Pat O'Brien and Erin Parseghian will update us from the studio in New York and sports Saturday Thomas Hitman Hearns Natalie makes it first and 15 for the Huskies Minnie idiot Hut you've got two battering rams but to further develop the big ten after they had that excellent week they had three ten three teams from top tennis I owe States going to be a very good football team before it's all over getting it Tomczak back he's gonna be playing of course Iowa's got Chuck Wong Wisconsin is going to be a factor in the big ten races has had a super game last week for Ohio State the Junior was concerned about their offensive line but wait see here is Jackson make that Robinson Robinson close to the 40 yard line at the 39 darlin rivers made the stop 103,000 partisan fancier have not particularly enjoyed this afternoon but it's been a big day for the Huskies they made this long trip out here and it's gonna be a fine plane trip back green and Hill again flanked at the bottom third down and five for Washington five minutes left in this case and again another whistle and a flag delay a game they didn't get that one off the time that's one of the few mistakes that Washington is made Pat I'm looking forward to next week you know I'll be in the Rose Bowl Nebraska trying to rebuild after losing offense that unbelievable backfield well if their first game was any indication they've rebuilt now they're playing little Holtz in Minnesota we might find out a little more Lou may wish it stated so host well it's been a week with Tom Osborne last week trying to learn some things about his offense her hope he did third down now and 10 for washing today there's Robinson again and Robinson will be way sure to bring up a fourth down Anderson and now Billy Harris number 56 a sophomore there is hit on the tackle he's one of the three nose guards they've used you have to wonder what a game like this does for these both of these teams in next week's opponents now of course Michigan opens up their Big Ten season next week against Wisconsin and they're going to have to emotionally pick themselves up off the ground here today find a way to play Wisconsin talk and of course Washington has a lot of emotion going for its game against Houston at home but the ball at the 423 mark and back regarding well I would say their coverages include some weeks ago absolutely right 45 yard kick absolutely no return in fact they lost three yards we'll be back with a last 411 in just a moment I loved everything about buying a new car looks the smell I loved everything but getting the fancy then I found out about GMAC financing it's so easy you can do it all right at your GM dealer now I love everything about getting a new car having a good day here's horrible and our ball really hit hey we wanted wish happy birthday one of our members of our crew Patty Gorsuch our Associate Producer happy birthday Manny she's what 21 I tell you that she told us now we're glad to have her with us and the crew as we get started this 1984 Joe as SETI our director got him out of the NFL out of New York he loves his College entire vivendi [Music] Joe and basketball and he's just as good if not better at football here's Harbaugh [Applause] and nice little op pass the beans stay at around nope he's out of bounds Dean has done an excellent job of keeping those feet in that time just couldn't quite pull it off the Jos Eddie our director and executive producer Kevin O'Malley is here along with Lindy DeLuca I didn't know they let him out of New York just occasionally they take the leash off that's right and our producer who we've worked with for three years Rick la subida other associate producer Scott Johnson Podcast associate Suzanne Smith I'm gonna be weather says next week we'll be in the Rose Bowl yeah Iowa State game - love it [Applause] Tony Louis giving chase and he spots a man in the 30-yard line our balls gonna be a tired young man he has run a lot today not only that he's been sacked four times and hit at least 10 other times after he's released the football that was being again it's a first down I am a Florida lady Purdue Purdue got an excellent job at a gym effort their quarterback last week to upset Notre Dame there's Carolina their lead has been whittled away Kentucky the job they did last year yeah backfield pattern era in the studio and we posted all day long [Applause] Jackson is back there defensively I'm curious to hear what era is going to say about the Notre Dame situation yeah you know I we should say this but era had picked them as a surprise team he will not appreciate that that you mentioned just joke in Europe because I have such respect for him and but it did look that way on paper we had Notre Dame they have what a line that average is about 290 pounds and they have some talented people back Steve Beuerlein their quarterback is back painted his back a lot of people picking number one teams another guy at another network that Arizona State was gonna be number one to hit a tough time that first game didn't it makes it to the 32-yard line there's your time left a convincing very impressive win here by Washington [Music] [Applause] and it's - number 12 the most improved player as a defensive back they head in the spring and that's the fifth turnover the third interception on Jim Harbaugh had two interceptions last week and this is a very tough situation for any quarterback to be and everybody knows you're gonna throw the football but Bo Schembechler is gonna have to find some answers really and how to bring that offensive line of his along I think that's the most critical thing for Bo to get accomplished in the next couple of weeks here's another look at the interception Harbaugh trying to drill the ball of the bean good drive by - number 12 actually bean was open but he came from nowhere throw hard on the ball to make a nice interception so at the 40-yard line that's where Washington have a 311 went to the game I'm interesting interested one thought Michigan has never been a passing team all through the years even an option team they had dismissed the Rick leaches the Wranglers do you feel it just takes a long time to really change what you do well in other words he has hardball but do you know how to throw actually when John wingler was here he they were not much of an option team if you remember they won the Big Ten actually went on to win the Rose ball so I think those quarterbacks are kind of similar but you both said he's committed to throwing the football he feels like he has to but they just have to find a way to make that offensive line come along a little bit quicker than he had hoped I'd stop by Mallory and we can't say enough about Mike Mallory Berni to fail that time carrying the ball as in most football games Gary Turner holders are the key here you see Washington flawless there Michigan turned the ball over five times three interceptions a couple of fumbles at least two of those resulted in scores plus the sacks plus the near interception by Rodgers and plus Michigan seemed to be in third long all day long less than two minutes to go get me Dom again are you surprised they haven't put another quarterback in give sicker oh maybe a shot at it what is sick girl's birthday today I don't know if you knew that I didn't know that I'm surprised not only is it Patty's birthday but it's sick rose as well call sick rose their backup quarterback from Ashland Oregon he along with Chandler competing for that starting knot [Applause] [Music] we have a timeout with 150 left in this game the score from Michigan Stadium the Huskies 24 Wolverines 3 [Music] this is Eddie he lives in a neighborhood with job opportunities don't come knocking at his door very often but now a local community organizations with the help of IBM and others have set up over 200 free job training centers some for careers and computer operations others in business and a thousands of people like Eddie it's the one thing they thought they would never have a chance to make it there are lots of furnaces you can choose for your home but for the most efficient energy forget all but the gas furnaces and to cut energy costs further consider only the high efficiency gas furnaces of those only one has advanced pulse technology the lennox pulse furnace it will make your heating more efficient take it from Dave Lennox you can save a lot of gas with a pull attaboy Dave today and tomorrow gas gives you more for your money is Thomas Hearns the most devastating puncher in boxing today find out when he defends his WBC World title live on CBS Sports Saturday next Michigan it got that timeout with 150 left a trail 22 3 want to thank Don cannon the athletic director of Michigan has Vince a nice to us Bruce Marty the sports information director my clewd of Washington has made the trip out here along with Chuck D Meyer their new sports information director to the point and Michigan's going to get the football just about at the 16 yard line statistician Mike Swanson and our spotter Steve Baer anybody who you want to recognize here that particular yeah I'm sure my five children probably aren't watching they're driving my wife nuts somewhere at the 17 Michigan with their last offensive opportunity 143 to go [Music] all still in a quarterback I should be put on he has to get rid of it I had to hit him Nelson and Harbaugh picks himself up again Ron Holmes all 260 pounds of immoral was all over Harbaugh that time it's been a tough day for Jim Harbaugh but he's the kind of days you have to learn something from I'm curious if you know it's interesting you say that because the situation like this I guess you get some confidence in yourself I mean and a 20 97:3 intercept it's mental toughness because the quarterback position requires that you're going to have situations like those in days like this and you have to fight your way through them to have the good game and there will be good days to the status of different well here goes Harbaugh to the 25 there's nothing wrong it is running ability [Applause] Andy thio Moe made the stop number 64 a former fullback now playing defense Michigan stops the clock with the minute 29 Harbaugh coming [Applause] coming up stay with us we have some boxing coming your way Hitman Hearns Thomas Hearns against Fred Hutchins and then Woodward live from New York's Belmont Park see fit to fight who is the handicapped Triple Crown winner that's to follow this game and of course next week we'll have the Illinois Ohio State UCLA Nebraska game on CBS this guy is looking ahead to Wisconsin next week it's kind of interesting beau here is called timeout minute 29 losing 20 to 3 but remember the first half I didn't call timeout when he had perhaps an opportunity I said I think I said Illinois Iowa Ohio State will have Illinois at Iowa the following week after that will be flying in there to see Hayden fries Club chuckling they say he probably throws the deep ball as well as any college quarterback in America big strong guy Owen Gill in the backfield and they had all 11 defenders returning defensively Illinois they've won their first two games over Northwestern and Missouri here is Gerald white-bread small hairy man white spins to the 30-yard line the first down all right the Chevrolet most valuable player for Michigan is this guy Bob Bergeron the field goal kicker he set a Michigan record today a 52-yard field goal at that time had tied the game up three apiece in a moment they recognized the Huskies levy catice 81 the backup tight-end out of Cincinnati makes that that reception at the 40-yard line they like Gatos he had Sim Nelson give him death okay one of our two most valuable players for Washington um Ellen 13 of 16 completions a hundred and sixty-seven yards a touchdown you said he had to do more and he did it well he sure did he rose to the occasion could have asked much more of him that controversies probably ended a quarterback now ha has another first down out to the 47 yard line and our last MVP a co-mvp and I think I gave this one away early hit number 39 Jim Rogers and I can't argue with you there he had a fumble recovery and interception two passes broken up five solo tackles in an assistant he probably was a waterboy at the same time and a check in the amount of $1,000 will be donated by Chevrolet to each colleges general scholarship fund further assists qualified students and all chosen academic fields that's Rogers that's shaken up will return for the last one minute and eight seconds in just a moment after you work for a lifetime to pay off your house you expect to be free and clear but in another American house there are plans today to put you eighteen thousand dollars in debt your share of mr. Reagan's deficits but when Mondale moves into the White House he won't forget about your place he'll cut spending close tax loopholes and put new taxes in a trust fund to pay off Reagan's debt let's stop mortgaging America Mondale Ferraro there fighting for your future Kentucky Fried Chicken we'd like you to know your rights you've got a right the only chicken cooked fresh for the Colonel's 11 herbs and spices original recipe chicken you've got a ripe to crisp call slop made fresh and you've got a right to hot buttermilk biscuits every batch made from scratch [Music] mr. chicken done right [Applause] 22/3 Rick Rogers still looking it over hope that's not serious Pat have you ever in your life been in a ballpark 103 thousand fans and have it be so quiet it really has been remarkable because we heard so much this is my first time into the stadium I had heard so much how difficult it is to play here how difficult it is for a posing quarterback an opposing team to come in among 103,000 but we have not heard much from them Pat O'Brien era Parseghian watching this from new york and they'll be updating us scores highlights the big play of this game was at 73 yarder by Hugh Mellon the mark Patterson was that kind of the backbreaker happened there in the third quarter and here's where I think you millon really became a big a major college quarterback he hung in there he knew he was going to get hit and he delivered an absolutely beautiful pass at this time there's just Michigan has not had the offensive firepower to be able to catch up to get that idea check that that's yo number 84 who's the former basketball player he played on that in see championship team of hilf readers he's six eight bow says he has a thirst for the fray so they think he's going to be tough enough to play football there he goes again and he needed more than 6-8 for that one fifty-five seconds late second attempt Harbaugh has been hanging in there he got hit again on that play kind of holding his arm a little bit it's been a day of really very efficient offense by the Washington Huskies in a phenomenal defense that really has been all over the football second and ten over eights our dog Yogesh the big sixteen lighter see and so Yogi's getting some few seconds in this game and basically let's got to give him some confidence to look to him or they'd be a big target first out is the 15-yard line this is chaos this game at all you got give him a lot of credit he is very safe Brett very much a competitor call another timeout [Applause] so coming up the fight the welterweight fight Thomas hit man her defending his crown against Fred Hutchins and then the Woodward and Futurity stakes from Belmont Park that's all to follow and of course Pat and era updating games this game starting early so there's a lot of football being played after this one's over and they will keep us surprised as to what's happening next week from the Rose Bowl Nebraska UCLA and Iowa against Ohio State and then tomorrow we discontinue our coverage the NFL today will start at all and then Chicago unbeaten against the Packers at black and blue division I've been around a lot of those games and that will be a very very interesting forest Greg in his first year for the Packers Mike Ditka's team unbeaten Atlanta playing very well without William Andrews and there's the other doubleheader games plus one and what the show st. Louis and the Colts boy st. Louis has been a pretty good team as well there's Rick Rogers leaving and that you hate to see that he's battled back to get academically eligible and then he gets hurt his first activity bill parcells for the Giants Wichita State yeah so they bought their first two with the three yard line that's the kind of pass we saw Washington run so effectively with a fullback his screen everybody out had the back run in the flag dumping the ball it's been taken to the fourth quarter will receive Michigan come out give Gerald white their tailback a chance to catch the ball he's a very good receiver [Applause] he is he it's one thing that boat oldest gray has the best hands of anything Falls last weekend three first it go let's get sad some wounds if they could score here target broken up and with he was interfering with he was held [Applause] looks like JC Pearson will be interdependent on it he just held him you have a pass interference this year the end zone comes out to the to this year instead of the one-yard line [Applause] and had that come into play wonder how long it took him to think of that rule it's pretty significant yes it's holding prior to the ball being thrown against the defense after distance first down take a look at number 4 GC Pearson it's going to be a quick slant into Vince bean after the play-action fake he was open the ball was thrown interfere the distance is probably about a inches first his goal at the too hard he hit on his wife it's x4y time outs left do they [Music] please doctor was seven because the officials are going to stop it we're going to do they're gonna have to snap it and get it going they got one last crack at it [Applause] that means something for this young team you see the competitive [Music] it means of the devotion that when the first beat Vince beans leaves plenty of sideline plenty room to throw the ball - well thrown by Harbaugh its master Vince beam has to turn to catch the ball but he does for the touchdown I think you can build something off of that as you mentioned the young quarterback battling back we gotta go 4-2 this is the play they like to put Gerald white number 22 straight up the middle gone they got it that's a de Guerra keeps attacking he's like a bulldog I can throw the ball the white and this situation this time they give it to their fullback over 30 to 80 Garrett I just really that was interesting now you really picked up on the quarterback having that success you bet days I'm sure work things were going well but if he could finish strong it kind of gave you something to get back into the film room way well I really believe that 80% of the position of playing quarterback is confidence and being mentally tough being able to take the food and take the criticism and taking the bad days and being able to fight through those things too so you can have the good days and hopefully Jim Harbaugh will have Harbaugh will have many good days ahead of them Valley was 6 of 9 on that drive was picking himself up a couple of times he took some real shots but just did you see Bo Schembechler as well he really wanted to get his offensive team his offensive unit into the end zone as well the turnovers were deadly just deadly rival three interceptions sloppy tying the onside kick touched by Washington going out about [Music] that date I said we'll wait to see breadsmith number six went up for it slopey trying to come up with the outside so washington will have the football and they'll have it across the 35 yard line two seconds left [Applause] a win for this Washington team at the 36 last snap of the scam [Applause] one another football 77th wind that is the end of it the final score Washington 20 Michigan 11 it was the turnovers the five committed by Michigan three interceptions without standing fierce pass rush and the arrival of you millon at quarterback as Pat said so very very well at seventy three yard touchdown pass through breaker the Pattison seemed to put human in the position that he is the man he will lead Washington to what they hope could be a Rose Bowl I thanks to her crew they worked long and hard we had the rain the late hours we know that you've enjoyed it and we certainly enjoyed working with them Pat O'Brien and era Parseghian will be in the studio to update us on other scores for Pat hey I'm Gary bender the final score here the Washington Huskies - and all with a 20 to 11 win over Michigan let's go to pattern era okay thank you Gary we want to remind everybody that following college football today we have CBS Sports Saturday with live boxing Thomas Hitman Hearns returns to Saginaw Michigan to take on Fred Hutchings in a world super weather way championship battle and then we have live horse racing out at Belmont Park the Woodward Slough a gold is challenged by v to fight and the Futurity and Michael Jackson is showing up everyplace else why not here
