unfortunate along with Len Dawson we're at the Coliseum the Los Angeles Raiders we've got to call them now and Lenny one of the Chiefs have to do to beat this solid Raider ballclub Don you hit it on the head when you said a solid football club the Raiders are exactly that their defense defense is playing extremely well for the Raiders with the exception of last week against the Redskins offensively they're well balanced mixing the run with the pass and the man that makes that offense go is number 32 Marcus Allen last year he was the Rookie of the Year in the National Football League he is the man that the Kansas City Chiefs are going to have to contain in order to contain that offense of the now Los Angeles Raiders how many times we're gonna say Oakland Raiders Len Dawson all right the Chiefs have won the toss and they will receive there you see Chris Barr about the tee it up here to kick-off the veteran in his eighth year now from Penn State Kansas City back to receive the opening kickoff it is an overcast day in Los Angeles the Sun has been in and out today and that's also very on the humid side perhaps a little bit unusual for this time of year in California Kansas City oddly enough was won five of the last seven games with the Raiders the Raiders snapped their three-game losing streak by winning last year 21 to 16 in their owning meeting in the strike shortened season we are underway as the oldest plow returns the kickoff and doesn't get much Kansas City again having problems returning kicks they'll put the ball in play at about the 14 yard line this defensive line of the Raiders they are extremely good and rushing to pass from first down is so very important for the handsome Ichi's they've got to get some some yardage on first down to stay away from the situation is right now third and 17 and the city with a single back of the shot down the Raiders go into their nikkor defense getting in his own end zone third and 17 has plenty of time throws over the middle of [Applause] he was looking for Anthony Hancock on the cleric and Henry Marshall on the play and it's incomplete gone here you taking a look at the defense look at the secondary now they're all flying back into zone UT the top a left-hand portion of your screen that the defensive back to just going back in a zone there are three Raiders right around Henry Marshall when the ball was thrown first down is important you've got to get some yardage on first down to eliminate that third and long situation that's on Jim Arnold he's averaging not quite 38 yards that kicked and right now he is kicking from way deep on the back line at this end zone and it's off a high kick it'll be filled in about the 40 that's Greg cruet through it 45 yard line breaks a tackle cook with some running roll Quillin for the Kansas City 25-yard line [Applause] five is the guy who brought him down and Pruitt who is just so good on returning punts just showed you what he could do right there Lenny last week it was a 97 yard return this was a good kick because it is high and he's going to get a wall that forms for him over here for number 34 of this tackle there now the wall is forming and print Brian did a good job of stopping him right there and he got to buy a trip I don't know if they gotten into the end zone but he got them down to about the 10 yard line you saw what he energy to make the tackle example and starting in an inside linebacker spot the fifth player to do that so far because of injuries to the Kansas City inside linebacker set the offense for you Plunkett at quarterback in the setbacks Marcus Allen and Kenny King wide receivers branches out to the hilt in injury so it's my handler than Barnwell Christensen is the tight end and there you see the offensive lines albeit Center handle of the Marvel that the guards and Davis and Lawrence with the tackle Henry Lawrence and art sales going to be a great matchup today that could be a good battle winner did not play against the Washington Redskins he missed the game and if he came in for one play on a kick return but that was it and when he's out of there ladder they are still a good solid ballclub aren't they well they do they don't rely entirely on number 32 Marcus Allen they'll utilize some of the other very talent that they have out there Plunkett had a big day it is not one that looks pretty you know and doing things and for percentage-wise he doesn't complete a lot of passes but he completes a lot of big big players there's the defensive set for Kansas City green and carry in that deep secondary along with bursts and lucious Smith bucket hauling as ty gets it away receptive picked off by number twenty nine Albert was the Nickelback Kansas City was in the prevent defensive little defense in Albert Lewis makes the interception in the end zone that is his second interception of the year so the Chiefs will put it in play first intent of the 20 when we return here in Los Angeles when the defense continues to make the big play for Kansas City last week seven interceptions in the ballgame and our UC o is doing Jim Plunkett should not have thrown this ball look he's flat-footed when he gets rid of the ball because somebody's right it is the seat he throws an inches of crowd three people down there and the receiver didn't have a chance now the big profit company's been trying intercept infect his ninth of the year first down Kenny goes to Henry Marshall Marshall a pull of the putty five closely to 30-yard line he may be a little bit shorter the first now he's tackled by the linebacker number 51 Bob Nelson secure for a lot of Nebraska the defense of course has kept the Chiefs of the football games certainly this season the defense with 16 turnovers in the last two games incredible seven interceptions in the last two games and of course they lead the NFL now forcing turnovers with 23 doing an outstanding job and that was a first down played on I had mentioned that they had to do something on first down to eliminate that third and long they did give him a first down they spot the ball exactly on the 30-yard line will make a Christian 10 at the Kansas City 30 back on the tight end in motion chief stay on the ground of it you get some Running Room Billy on the ball carrier and Lyle Alzado is there to stop it there's a couple of matchups here that are really good Dave Lutz is going against Howie long how he long they believe is that their best defensive lineman in the end Dave loose is going to have his hands full this afternoon with Howie Long he's he's an outstanding defensive line militant every week Davis coming up every it's the best defensive line every week he's facing as somebody that's really solid on that side of the line and I guess you could say it's because most teams are right-handed right but yes Carlos Carson in motion Billy Jackson Kinlaw is there to stop him last week Willie Jackson with a sensational six yard run I thought for a touchdown on that game against the Cardinals but that's the first touchdown the Chiefs that squad on the ground and it was really a superb run and they needed it badly because he broke about two tackles getting into the end zone six yards doesn't seem like a long way to go but when they three or four people are hanging on you it can make it a long ways he did a great job it's also a long way to go in your the averaging 73 yards a game on the ground statistics on Bill Kenny who's 12th in the AFC in passing we're looking at a third down of four at the 36 yard line Kenny back to throw on third down over the middle Carson Carson of the 45 good catch by Carlos Carson van McElroy and Ted watts in a deep secondary are there to stop it nice catch by Carson yes it was he's coming across the middle and that's dangerous in there because the linebackers are in there here we see him coming across defensive back floating back the linebacker is trying to to get in his way but he was much too slow to catch up with Carson he's got too much speed here it is Kenny reads it nobody is in the middle it was not a linebacker in the middle Carlos Carson came across the middle eating the ball in the hurry to pick up that first down first intent of the Kansas City 46 yard line single back offense now back with emotion to wide receivers Kenny back to throw on first a little bit short maybe a flag down on the play there is they dropped the flag at the 40 yard line he was looking for Carlos Carson on the play where the super penalty is looks like it's going to be holding against only to 5-yard penalty so it'll bring up third down and 15 Carlos Carson is out here now he's a wide receiver and it's the screen pants he has to take his man deep and then once the ball is thrown he has to change from a receiver to a blocker for a yard line James Davis was there to make the tackle in the early going here which surprises me perhaps that they could run against the Raiders Raiders are a good team against the run but that first down is so very important like I said to pick up some yardage is looking at head coach john mackovic looking over his game plan and the plays a good gate on that last play picking up about eight yards second down and along two yards to go for the Kansas City first down at the Los Angeles 45 yard line Chiefs going with one live receiver flanked up top and off again Billy Jack you have to push down let's say this Kotik crowd thinks you didn't make it but it looks like you they see where they spot the football Martin is there to make the tackle the outside linebacker on the right side the Chiefs have been running to their left side against the right side the Raiders could be one of two reasons one they may think that that side is weaker than the other side or perhaps so the strength of Kansas City's on the left side with Brad buddy when Matt Perkin off because Bob Simmons he's 73 he's in there but he was playing hurt right now he's not completely healthy down and let's get a yard to the first now they sent Beckman a motion somebody moved on the right side Billy Jackson but somebody moved on the right side for Kansas City this one should go against the Chiefs it goes against the Chiefs I'll take play [Music] as I see across the field down he looks like he was holding his leg Jim Rourke has come in now at the left tackle spot format her Knopf Rourke is in number 70 so Kansas City hurting in the offensive y72 second against Dave Lutz this time he gets called for a joke yes remember when you're on that offensive line you come to a three-point stance you cannot move and you can see the top part of your screen that you move before the ball was snapped and that's automatic I take the 5 yard yet think they occupied today that also hurts it brings up a third down and six to the Chiefs go to the shotgun [Applause] they go [Applause] eighty-three historic Ted Hendricks he's playing as one first consecutive game just nails the penalty really crossed the Chiefs lennie cost of the first down it certainly did as you can see bill Kenny back to pass number 83 is Ted Hendricks nobody touched him this man has made so many big plays over the years I don't know he has got 26 interceptions which has to write him up their top throw line what a lot of kick sir Arnold back to kick for the second time in his own 25-yard line that screw it back to single safety a good booming punt by Arnold you drive through it back to his own 10-yard Albert Lewis who got down on the coverage Albert Lewis has been just sensational on coverage and kicks in special teams he flies down the field and almost forced through it to cough up the football so the Raiders will not put the ball in very good field position there's our score here in the Coliseum Bob Flores who took over as head coach of these raiders back in 1979 last year in the strike short the season led the Raiders to an 8 to 1 season before the loss to the Jets in the playoffs all the way to the Super Bowl championship and what a nice person first and 10 at the 10 so Los Angeles and for field position here but they give it to Marcus Allen and Allen charges his way up over the 15 yard line maybe the 16 yard line Lloyd Barris is there to make the tackle along with Duran cherry good blocking up front for the Los Angeles Raiders when I September 70 Henry Lawrence and art still number 67 would be a good matchup that matchup was won by Henry Lawrence he's really an outstanding offensive tackle and it's gonna be a good matchup all afternoon that was a good play for the Raiders pickup with six will make it second down and four this time Kenny Keim's carries for the first time today and the Chiefs are all over him Gary Blanton who's doing such a super job calling the defense of signals leaves the tacklers on the play John's amberlynn at the other inside live back to Scotland but this guy to fill that position in Spain he went out with that injury on the final preseason game but the word is now Gary Spain he might be back now hopefully the Gary will I know he's anxious to play but how about that position some players will do pretty reluctant to play that for other guys went out before you five different guys have gone out of that inside linebacker spot for Kansas City boys trouble spot Raiders on the 17 yard line third down and three here's Marcus Alice and he's gonna be short of a first down they swarm all over him so the Raiders staying pretty much on the ground against Kansas City lad Mike Bell is there to leave the tackle region teams have been running on the Chiefs they've been giving up over 153 yards on defense against the rush that's a lot yes they have and that's probably one of the reasons why Tom Flores and the radar coaching staff feel that they're going to establish that running game against the the Chiefs Cleveland heating the Jets ten to seven final round I guess the Browns are bad last-second field goal on that look at this this is a male Green Bay is a hot one we can hold the bag there you see they're short of the first down less than a yard so the Raiders would be forced to kicked and they got the best of the business and Ray guy to cover it in fun in the game you just saw earlier today on tv5 Washington over st. Louis 3814 the Cardinals really struggling yes they are getting better and better every ray guy averaging almost 44 yards that kicked in the punting Department little over 43 about 43 and a half yards a kick as long as 67 yards Anthony Hancock is returning the punts with JT Smith still out oh those JT Smith says he's ready to come back and play now Hancock not the turn man and really a kickoff Chiefs hurting in the offensive line Department of injuries single setback three wide receivers they run formation very much maybe a couple of the most Billy Jackson carries it'll bring up about a third down and along aid almost a third to nine like you got to think the Kansas City's got to open up against the Raiders they looked at the fins and that lost last week to the Washington Redskins by the Raiders in which Theismann threw for 415 yards and four touchdowns yes he did he did a great job and they're especially good against the the running game the Raiders are but do you have to establish something got to get something going on first down that's really so important it makes the play calling that much easier on second and third third down conversion percentage for Kansas City they're in the shotgun I'm 39 Guinea for Hancock he's got a first out of more it's complete at about the Los Angeles 37 yard line good catch by Anthony Hancock did Kenny put it out on the money yes he did and he did not have a great deal of time bill Kenny had to get rid of the football Alzado coming up putting pressure on him another defensive lineman putting pressure on him he just gets the ball away good concentration by Anthony and card gets both feet down in bounds at the big first down for the Chiefs so kenny who struggled for four quarters against miami and then for two quarters against the Cardinals last week before he got it together in the second half is looking pretty sharp here in this football game came into this with the Chiefs averaging 208 yards passing and kitty has said on 55% of his passes so far this season fakes the handoff to jerel Thomas on play-action looking for Kenny Thomas coming out of the so both Thomas is in the backfield that time his younger brother a because he is just a superb athlete and really a fine player eight yards by Lewis on the return so Kansas City again with great field position right here first and ten at the greater 37 yard line stats I'm Kitty for the afternoon pretty good day 5 of 9 for 80 yards of course the touchdown pass the step on page so two Chiefs Leonard to think of taking managing a super field position that they've had in the first quarter here and can get out of this point store on the board they're gonna be a tough football team that was I believe the sixth game you gotta have the instinct to put a team away when you come up with the with a big play like that if you can put that other team of with you can get back on the board at least get three points but get something out of that turnover there an excellent field position right now it is demoralizing to both e of the defense and the offense of the opposition bucket last week two for four touchdowns that's his ninth season by the way super 372 yards and four touchdowns and he loses the football game last week if the Redskins took advantage of the Raiders in the last six minutes of the game as the Raiders blew a 15-point lead now you see Kenny King coming off the field number 33 he apparently has also been shaken up so the Chiefs with 336 to go here in the first quarter with great field position can check that Makos ten [Applause] first intent Kansas City I formation at the Oakland in the radar 37 the other line play-act - Kenny over the [Applause] No beautiful the artist Browder during this football team last week and to the super job running just catches a 36-yard bass from bill kitty and the Chiefs right now have the Raiders on the run there are two things on this play Kenny gets the ball to boo peel his ground he makes a great move right here bake the outside go right around I don't know if we can see it on this replay but Carlos Carson did a great job there he is right there fighting that defensive back watt giving the oldest brought an opportunity to almost get into the end zone but that's what I'm talking about a complete ball players not one who just catches passes for the do a wide receiver youth once that ball is in the air and you've become a blocker he did a great last week less 252 yards all to a good receiver here's by the endzone touchdown cheese jump out with to quit touchdowns here on two straight possessions the turnovers making the big difference as Albert Lewis makes a great interception to set up his touchdown there you see the running stats I'm the oldest Brown last week the Chiefs go 37 yards in two plays and field is proud his second touchdown in two games for the Chiefs their third of the year on the ground which is a rather low figure but today we've watched the running game be effective early and that's got to help set up the passing game then they add on that touchdown really because what happened they had a turnover they capitalize on that turnover got a touchdown now it's going to put them two touchdowns ahead of the of the Raiders and it's going to put a lot of pressure on the radar offense flowers for the extra point flags go down as somebody move above that line we'll have to wait and see what the call is looks like it may be against Kansas City on the left side so we'll do it again we are alive in the Coliseum in Los Angeles unfortunately Raiders in the Chiefs nick flowery about to attempt the extra point to go up 14 nothing with 320 to go in the first quarter who would have thought this Raiders came into this game better than a nine point favorite over Kansas City but Len you told us we might see a good football game today and so far it's been all Kansas City kick is good Chiefs lead at 14 to nothing they go 37 yards in two plays following the interception by Albert Lewis while Leonard the Raiders got to be wondering what's happening to them they will 15-point lead in the final six Reds last week goes to the Redskins I doubt they thought they'd be down by two touchdowns with three minutes left to go in the first quarter today I talked to the Raiders prior to the game they knew this was a good Kansas City chief football team and if they needed to get some breaks put some points in the board now here it is you're taking a look Beckman in motion and they're going over the right side there's no penetration there to see that no penetration Lutz did a good job Billy Jackson did a good job of going into the line and it made an easy run for Theotis Theotis Brown see number 43 Jackson going in there look at there's no penetration effect but also involved to the good side they stopped the penetration of the Raiders give the ball to fill his ground and makes it a lot easier to get into the endzone the oldest Brown with both plays on the drive he catches the 36 yard pass then he goes over from the one not too bad I'm probably saying we are up but being more often coach to plays we're in the end zone he's playing in the same stadium where he played his college football at UCLA [Applause] the last one and again the laters we'll look at terrible field position he'll put the ball and playing about the 12 yard line Oh Brooks having trouble of fielding these kicks under weather the Sun is causing you problems or what it's kind of a hazy day and ice up a the small two plays in 37 yards 36 yard pass to Theo is crowded in the one-yard run for the touchdown following the interception by Albert Lewis so the defense setting up the first three games of the season the offense this time taking advantage of that situation and putting some points on the board you know how good that makes the defensive unit feel that they turn it over to the offense and they put points on the board gives them a great look at the hit Marcus why do people try to run against art still number six heart still just nails Iseman Trophy winner before he even gets to the line of scrimmage but here you can take a look at it we said that still was a good matchup nobody touched it the back was trying to get involved to make a hit on art still and that is a mismatch he didn't get to Menard still just stuff Marcus Allen for a couple of yard loss loss to the yard make it almost two yards will make it a second down in 12 and again they give the ball to Marcus Allen so the Raiders who have not thought much in the passing Department what gets thrown twice both times incomplete we've intercepted a couple time staying on the ground against Kansas City Mike Bell was in on that tackle number 99 look at that statistic first down here six for Kansas City the Raiders with none once again if the defense holds on third down the offensive unit for the Chiefs should get the ball up pretty good new position that's the name of this game we give the ball anywhere near the midfield area that makes scoring a lot easier particularly if you hit a man like Nicklaus third down and ten Barnwell the wide receivers for the Raiders bucket bucket over the middle income almost hands-on it it was tipped grabbed it so the crowd here the see him is getting out of the rain but it's having a miserable afternoon in the first quarter there's Albert Lewis young man who's having a great game a rookie and Ray guy will once more covered the punt for the Raiders you know on that last pass they didn't get to plunk it but that week in and week out you're gonna be doing the job I don't think anybody would question the ability of the Chiefs defensive unit I mean for the last several years they've been playing extremely well they're capable of competing against anybody and they and every team that you talk to that heaven has to play the Chiefs I say hey their defense is really sour looks really good we're concerned about gray guy back the kick gets it away now watch this one go into the end zone for the touch the foot into play first and ten at the road 20 outline with 736 to go in the first half ray guy gets and more penalty holding called that play back in the end up pump the ball away with four minutes to go she's still trying to get the football you saw Lloyd Burris go after Marcus Allen oh that's it every city calls their last timeout the Raiders with a minute to we'll be facing a third down and six after this timeout tough game if they lose this one left yes it is because they played they fight what keeps the played well they've done some things very well they have to eliminate their own mistake and most of the time penalties argue John mackovic who's not too happy about the way his team has played particularly here in the second half Raiders have had a lot of penalties too but again it seemed like a lot of those Raider penalties didn't come at crucial times they've just done enough you know so say that the funk invisible thing in a pretty way but he gets things done you know fifteen to twenty seven two interceptions under 24-yard you know he calls his own place so he's utilizing the rest of the people to be a great deal to the offense of it one oh two remaining I do not look for them to put it in the air they're gonna keep it on the ground now standard Rock Kansas City with no
