[Applause] brewer gets it outside in the direction of byron williams incomplete and we'll take a look at one of the best hunters in the nfl dave jennings two of the very best are here today ray guy of [Music] so many great years at cleveland will try to return the kicks for the raiders penalty marker down already gets to the outside dances to about the 43 before he's brought down by lawrence taylor you know what happened on that play pat the raiders had too many guys on the field the defense was coming off and they didn't get off the field that's going to be against the raiders and that's just that's an undisciplined thing that got it when it's third down you have to get off [Music] illegal procedure against the giants maybe they didn't feel that they gave him enough time to get off that must be because the the raiders had about 15 men on the field on that play in fact i think they changed it there pat that was against the raiders it was against the raiders okay and that will probably be enough for a first down [Applause] [Music] it'll be very close i think it is a first down defense 12 men on the field first down [Applause] 12 men they had about 15 or 16 men on the field fred silva is the referee we'll check out some of the other final scores tampa bay beat houston 33-24 the jets overwhelm new england 26-3 that's the final as well [Music] first down giants just outside their own 40 no score as yet butch wolf hooked the lone setback scott brunner is the quarterback [Music] ernest gray in motion outside quickly to gray raider defense gets out reacts quickly led by bob nelson but he got good yardage nevertheless bill pickell has taken the place of lyle alzado at right defensive end there is number 71 and there is lyle alzado over the sideline checking his ankle well alzado is if it comes off off the bus or into the locker room ready to flip i've never seen a guy get us fired up to play a football game as lyle alvarez byron williams in motion wolf the ball carrier cuts back inside good yardage another giant first down bob nelson on the tackle raiders think a lot of number 71 dekalb well you know he was a rookie he was their number two draft choice from rutgers and he he said it that he came in and he's just strong he plays a run he plays the pass watch him right here on brad benson benson does a good job because paquel gets up too high you see he was standing up but he did a nice job of getting off the block and back in and helping the tackle but wolfo got the first down so the giants move into rated territory john mistler that's the final score new orleans beats minnesota 17-16 big win for the saints and a big loss for minnesota more than anything nfc central is well unpredictable same thing the 49ers lose today to chicago new orleans wins they can get back in that thing of course the rams are playing not too far from here against buffalo so a lot of things could happen in both of those divisions before this day is over second and nine willfolk got only one byron williams without wide to the right ernest gray wide to the left here comes williams hit from the outside by rod martin another of the raiders who's having an outstanding year he's an amazing guy he's in his seventh year now we drafted him eight years ago he was our last pick the 12th round pick we waved him he went on played with the 49ers and then he came back he was the outstanding player in the super bowl a couple years ago they just didn't block all rod on that play through those eyes he said i like that i play outside they go ahead and rush the faster no one blocks me that's pretty good deal that's the way to play it john tuggle now in the backfield with joe marsh as the giants have to grow instead of that they run a drop way to mars he shakes to the outside gets back to the original line of scrimmage is out of bounds and the giants will have to fight for an update right now let's take you back to our new york studio and brent musberger well pat new orleans did beat minnesota and chicago did beat san francisco and now the packers are trying to be tied for first in the nfc central that was dicky to lofton vicki's 27th touchdown pass of the season let's go back to pat and john and you're looking at dave jennings at the los angeles coliseum the home of the los angeles raiders greg pruitt is standing at his own kin dave jennings will with the giants [Music] good shot good lets it sail no he finally does catch it at about the five yard line the giants were dead quickly but a penalty marker has been dropped on the field 45 yards 45-yard punt by jennings no return as the officials [Music] philadelphia 28-24 those of you who watched that victory welcome to the los angeles coliseum and summer all in john madden illegal push in the back it'll be first down first down raiders at their own two-yard line not a very good way to start your offensive day i'm florian raider's coach the nice guy he is well you know the raiders seem to have so many things go wrong but they always win that's what the good teams do and they have 42 turnovers second worst but they just keep winning jim flunkett drops the ball in the end zone and the giants will have a safety bucket bill courier came up quickly bucket fell on the ball in the end zone and that's just what you were talking about that's the type of thing that happens to him you know as tom floyd were saying he said we just can't go out and have an easy one said every game win we have to make a game out of it bucket of course making one of his what seemed like annual comeback oh here it is right here you know he he starts to turn so he's reverse pivoting he's going to reverse from the left to the right and right in the middle of his pivot he just lost the ball and that that's the smart thing just dive on it give him two you guys start scrambling around there if the giants recover the ball of course that would be a seven point six point touchdown and with sheek it'd be seven you're right my gym plunk it was just down the center dave dalby there he was saying hey it was me it wasn't you because he did get the ball from the center we never had a chance to tell you who was playing on our bench for the raiders but we will get to that this is a tough part coming up of a safety right here of course the two points often turn out to be very important but then you have to give the ball right back great guy he'll keep it up there a while for you he will and you have to give it back in good field position because you have to punt from the 20 or kick from the 20-yard line the raiders choose to punt well a lot of times people wonder why they don't kick off but the reason is you can't use a t [Music] you have to kick it off the ground like a field goal or an extra point i'd like to kick off right and the punch should be able to go farther than a kickoff a free kick and stay up there [Music] [Applause] the giants do get it back at their own 45. mike mayotte is the man to handle it steinfeld is the one who made the recovery [Applause] [Music] a lot of times you get your kickoff return team in there and you get guys that aren't used to catching punts but here he caught the punt it was just a good hit by the raider so the giants take over and they lead two to nothing [Music] that summer all john madden at the los angeles coliseum giants two raiders nothing 911 left first quarter that's the final score the browns starting to roll improve their record green bay seven atlanta nothing first quarter first and ten as scott bruner looked over the raider defense [Applause] mister in motion wolf of all carrier did well to get back to the line of scrimmage otis mckinney came up to make the stop that's the thing that's going to happen to the giants here if they keep running every first down the raiders are starting to tighten up tighten up getting their safeties up in the line of scrimmage and in that time they had an eight-man front and that's tough to run against alzado is still not back in the raider defense it's pikel with right defensive in and along at the other side [Music] the nose pack [Applause] [Music] runner back to throw chased by hendricks away from henry destro has the ball knocked loose byron williams was the intended receiver and ted wants to put the hammer on him what the raiders are doing now is they're using two safeties in there you know they have mike davis and then they have mckinney otis mckinney in there and they're playing the two safeties because the giants are playing two tight ends now they put james davis in as well joe parcells over on the sideline the los angeles coliseum home of the 1984 olympics or some of them at least [Music] that's one of the things that parcells knew they had to do and that was throw quickly so quickly and of course one of the big problems is because they really can't pass protect against that defensive line of the raiders jennings standing at his own 30 greg pruitt back the raider 10. beautiful southern california born innings almost blocked but he hangs it eye to foot [Music] at the 16 signals for the bear catch tony caldwell was the raider who came close to blocking that kick of jennings but it was a good front nevertheless 39 yards no return to a 39-yard net [Music] raiders had the ball at their own 16 first and ten with the giants leading two nothing 8 14 left to play in the first quarter at the los angeles coliseum marcus allen and kenny king are the two running backs [Music] hit by brad van pelt might have spun backwards for about a yard the offense of the raiders jim plunkett the quarterback marcus allen and kenny king in the running backs cliff branch and malcolm barnwell the wide receivers up front bruce davis charlie hannah dave dalby mickey marvin henry lawrence and the league leading receiver todd [Music] christensen marcus allen sorry lawrence taylor on the tackle the giant defense it's a three-man front d hardison at the left in jerome sally the nose tackle and the rookie leonard marshall at right in kelly carson and taylor perhaps the league's best linebacking crew haines jackson bill courier and number one draft choice terry canard the free safety third down for the raiders they need four for a burst [Music] back penalties go down and sent kenneth for branch over his head had some pressure he did you know one of the interesting thing that the raiders do that's going to be a penalty against the raiders holding i'm sure it'll be declined because the giants want the ball but they're one of the few teams that keep their two running backs in on third down offense number 65 holding decline fourth down that set that john madden was talking about has become something of a rarity yeah you hardly ever see both backs in on a you always see three wide receivers four wide receivers two tight ends two wide receivers the raiders are one of the few that stay in standard formation great guy to punch shaw back deep guy doesn't get it to turn over shaw will handle his own 39. raiders down in a hurry derrick jensen and kenny hill they're right on top of him 44. 39 yard punt a six yard return so rick guy's net is 33 yards 6 38 left to play first quarter the giants get the football again they lead the raiders to nothing [Music] giant defensive unit meeting over on the sideline brian kelly's big brought back to you first down giants they leave two nothing they have the ball at their room 44 [Applause] and the possession so far belongs to them here's the counter play that teams have been running and wolf hook slipped down there comes a flag down [Music] lester hayes came in to make the stop on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i'll tell you one thing the raiders are giving the giants all the opportunity that they need here in this first quarter defense number 36 personal foul unnecessary roughness blow to the head first number six is mike davis he doesn't think he did anything [Music] first down at the raider 37 [Music] [Applause] [Music] great [Music] [Applause] still has the ball swings to the outside cuts back inside and puts woofer with a heck of an effort to get something from nothing lester hayes knocked him out of bounds rod martin had a shot at him in the backfield i'll tell you rod martin came from that right side like he was shot out of a gun it was that counter play will fall fake to the right comes back to the left now watch here now now what he'll start faking to the right and then he's going to run back to the left but watch rod martin he'll come shooting in here right the right of the screen right there just as butch will folk turn there was rod martin but wolf folk made a heck of a play out of that thing and scott bruner got a heck of a block on rod martin got out of the trap outside malcolm scott nfl update let's take you again back to our new york studio and brett mussberger that the peckers get on the board again it was a pass interference call against james lofton down on the one that set up this touchdown dickey was on the roll took it on annie himself and at halftime we'll hear from washington redskins fullback john reagan back to paton john giants out of the huddle third down last image the raider 29. they need two for a first down mistler in motion back pedals knocked away by bob nelson and very nearly picked off by nelson intended for ernest gray [Applause] so here comes ali she missed only three field goals all year round you talk about a bright spot in this giant defense that has to be this guy ali sheik watch bob nelson there he's just playing a zone he started back saw the ball right over there knocked down with his right hand ali had from 47 yards out bruner is the holder 23 out of 26 on the year 256 yards wide right all you have to do is brag about people i guess so the giants come away empty but they still leave the los angeles raiders two nothing in the first quarter from the coliseum 5 25 remaining first quarter pat sumrall and john madden the los angeles coliseum home of the la raider [Music] [Applause] got it away marcus allen dances to the 35 bill courier made the stop lawrence taylor very nearly took the helmet and have some more of the equipment off jim plunkett you have the feelings the raiders may not know as much about lawrence taylor as other teams do because they haven't played against this guy who maybe owensdaler just may be the best football player in the match to football and he has to have special blocking and certainly a lot of attention that's marcus and officer [Applause] maybe the raiders do know more about him and say well let's just run away from him he's lining up over on our left let's run kenny king to the right really a lot of teams try to run away from him but he runs him down he catches him you can't run away from him to the inside you can run away from him to the outside but he'll run it down to the inside first down raiders at their own 44 giants reading two nothing [Music] in motion thank you allen market looks [Music] hit down by brian kelly but it's in giant territory at their 43 13-yard game i'll tell you one thing that they did they catch their tight end christensen in their leading receiver the leading receiver in the whole nfl they kept him in on that pass play to block lawrence taylor that's malcolm barnwell who caught the pass who seems to be injured or shaken up or when knocked out of him right now well says it's a little fake he fakes to marcus allen that takes the linebackers out to the right then mark combinedwell comes in against the grain and finds that hole that was bill courier who put the hit on that hurt barnwell but it came off under his own power [Music] well the giants had those opportunities and they sure didn't take advantage of them with all those opportunities and only come off with two points that's not getting the job done that's branch up at the top of your picture and stokie williams at the bottom and he can do a lot of things william has it knocked away right at the very last second a good defensive play by terry canard [Applause] let's watch lawrence taylor here number 56 we'll see how they're blocking him he started in the middle so they didn't know where he was shifted to the outside now the raiders are putting their tackle bruce davis out on him he does a nice job jimmy just just gets square turns him to the outside gives plunket time it has to be somebody like that nobody that big to handle it someone that big that can get to him that quickly second and ten raiders farnwell back in action goes in motion [Music] jumping over a couple of tacklers jumped over mark haynes and got about five i'll tell you there's a guy that they love down here is that marcus allen they say that he can do it all he runs with it blocks he catches he's had a little problem fumbling this this year and tom flores said i don't know what the heck it is but what do you say to a great back when he maybe that's part of doing it all i think so because you know sometimes to keep your balance to make great moves you get the ball in some funny possession position that's a pretty good conversion rate you just saw on third down over 43 percent and the tight end gets down to the giant 35 not enough for a first down lawrence taylor let's watch it you know jim plunkett has been around so long that even though he can't see from the back see there's bruce davis blocking on him he can feel taylor he knows there's something there he says i got to get rid of that thing here it is five says there it is you see that play by taylor he is he was on pluck it and then ended up making the tackle [Music] he got an assist from andy hedden [Music] here is chris barr from 52 yards out and perhaps the best holder in the league david hung back that might be asking a little too much of him he's hit some clutch field goals this year won three games in fact that one no good it's two nothing giant still 225 remaining first quarter at the coliseum in los angeles and the giants have a safety jim fumble into the end zone that's [Music] what a good player i'll tell you you know i was saying earlier he was drafted in the 12th round it was funny the way he was drafted pat i was of course with the raiders and we got to the last round we didn't know who to take we're talking about basketball players from a t and ig and stuff so i called my friend john robinson an sc i said hey you got any players just laying around there that may be good he said yeah why don't you take rod martin he can play so we took rod martin he's been [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that's right the raiders cut them the 49ers picked him up the 49ers cut him and then the raiders got him again watch him here he's the inside guy here 53. sees that tight end blocked down tackle pull gets right down there flattens out right down the line of scrimmage and makes a tackle on the other side with an assist from van mcelroy who is another fine that the raiders have come up with third and three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] throw it quick they say that's what he wants to do we'll see mistler here now he just gets up here enough for a first down turns around hook bruner right in there on him and they get that first down that's not a bad play if you can stay in those third and four or five situations where it's a terrible play is when you do that you need third and 12. 27 seconds left to play in the first quarter in motion again [Music] reggie kenlaw and bob nelson wrap him up green bay in atlanta backers in the thick of things in the nfc central 14 nothing atlanta trying to stay alive in the unfc west kansas city seven seattle seven san diego 14-7 over denver in the first quarter speaking of first quarter that's the end of number one here at the coliseum with the giants ahead of the raiders by the score of two to nothing and seven giants leading to nothing over the raiders at the end of one quarter giants have rushed 13 times and puts wolf carried on 12 of them [Music] [Applause] [Music] make it 13 out of 14. they only got a couple howie long is the man who made the hit that stopped him from bill pickell [Music] very slow moving first quarter greg townsend number 93 is another minute reggie kinwa coming out is another man you want to keep your eyes on they said he wasn't big enough but after they took a look at him they found out that [Applause] but sometimes you can throw it too quick too quick and i think maybe not far enough away from the line of scrimmage you know because that ball that pass protection was really good enough and i think if they're getting a little pushed in the middle maybe bruner should drop a little deeper dave jennings very quickly and gets off another rocket greg pruitt lets it sail and it pops into the end zone and out bring it back to the 20. that's the ankle of lyle alzado who is sort of the cult leader of the defensive line group for the raiders he has a bad ankle it doesn't look like he'll be back pat some are all john madden at the los angeles coliseum where the giants leave the raiders two nothing second quarter whip branch outline to the left malcolm cornwell of the top of the picture [Applause] [Music] he's been playing 12 years for the raiders he's going here against jerome sally watch this match up here boom sally does a nice job gets underneath the shoulder pass hold that middle hold it hold it hold it here comes the ball pretty good spin around he got it pretty good play by jerome sally you ought to check that one out again [Applause] the amazing footprint stopped by terry jackson 11-yard gain branch has found some secret and has never gotten old he has never gotten old you know we took dave dalby in the fourth round and cliff branch the same year 12 years ago these guys have been starting forever and cliff grant still has that same speed that same quickness that same size he's never gotten old you better not play him too tight he'll go deep on you still [Music] [Applause] [Music] lawrence taylor i'll tell you if they were on a blitz from the outside now what van pelt comes from one side taylor comes from the other side and they just prune they got in there before the play got started they had those two side by side the old inside out deal now taylor is lined up outside the right defensive end back to throw branch takes [Music] terry jackson both combined to get him down but it's an 18-yard pickup you wonder how cliff branch gets so open on the outcast the reason is at the corner terry jackson in this case is so worried about branch going deep that he respects it too much he gives him too big a cushion he's way off then branch can just cut out in front and catch it in front of him with that catch cliff branch has now gained over eight thousand yards on past receptions marcus allen jerome valley on the bottom of the pile we were just talking about [Applause] the raiders all-time receivers the great fred villetnikov the leader cliff branch just got over eight thousand and then ark powell you know art powell was a receiver that was with the raiders he was created to buffalo for daryl lamonic father raiders got lamonica [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] made a block on that one because if you're going to run in the middle if you're going to run against the three-man line you have to get that nose tackle block now what happened on that play is sally started to stunt he started to stunt to his left mickey marvin the right guard who picked them off stopped that penetration they were able to get by raider first down jumping inside the giant 40 here's allen again and he nudges for about three brad van pelt stopping by [Music] for an update back to our new york studio and brett musberger that the packers are having a field day against atlanta playing without steve bartkowski here comes dickey who is tight in kaufman kaufman battles in and now it's 21-0 green bay they'd be tied for first if they can hold on back to pat and john it's two nothing here but the raiders are on the move eight fifty nine fifty left to play in the first half sunken back to throw now he takes off trunk it slides inside the 30 brian kelly on top of him pluck it looks in excellent shape he has a tendency to gain weight get heavy but he looks good now well he's one of those guys that's very thick he has great big legs and he has to run all the time now what's what they do to the nose tackle here watch the right guard in the center you see that boom the guard gets them there center goes the other side mickey marvin does a nice job of taking him to the inside this funk it has that big alley in there he's a guy who can block is that mickey marvin he enjoys the game oh he loves it he'd play all day [Music] pluck it got enough for the first down [Music] kenny king is back in the backfield now with marcus allen [Applause] back to throw they get laurence taylor blocked they have todd christensen wide open christensen struggles down to about the giant 12 before terry jackson can get there but it's a 17-yard pickup it's an amazing story right there too christensen clark christensen was a running back in college at bringham young was drafted by the dallas cowboys wade went to the new york giants he was there for a week and then the raiders picked him up and he was a special teams guy and they made a tight end out of him watch him here he just comes across the giants are in a zone defense cliff france drew all the respect over there you see that that opened the hole for christensen first down raiders back to throw again on first down the receiver don hasselbeck whom they got from new england and hasselbeck is a big target six eight raiders got the lead [Music] what said he puts marcus allen is in motion that's it right he does a little movement here he looks to the right then he comes back to hassle back here and as you say he's a big target the giants were in pretty good position he had three guys there and hasselbach was just too big right over the top of them there's a good throw black pumpkin far for the extra point with hum holding [Applause] [Music] this is what happens when you have a six foot seven tight end we'll see it right here see monkey can see him pick him out all the way look at that you can throw it up over everyone right in the house that was a heck of a throw really was [Music] as the man who just scored the raider touchdown the only touchdown of this contest so far don hasselbeck big target sure help he's caught two passes by the way as a raider both of them for touchdown [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down to make the hit that stop juggle [Music] readers just went 80 yards in 10 plays against the giants and in that drive that 80 yard drive pocket was four for four for 57 yards look it looks like he is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment well you know he started out as a raider starter this year and he was replaced 84 on the receiving team illegal block above the waist first down [Music] [Applause] and then mark wilson had the injury and so plunkett was able to sit on the sidelines sometimes that helps again tom floyd said he's been much much better since his return runner has willful step back here comes that counterpart takes it outside doesn't take it far outside [Applause] [Music] see it takes that little counter step and now that allows his offside tackle brad benson to get in front of him 60 there you see the only thing is is benson ran right by hendricks hendricks is six foot seven you have to be able to find him like a tree out there [Music] on second down runner back to throw [Applause] byron williams get some breathing room outside the 25 to about the 28th good throw by bruner mike davis the defender but that one was homed in the middle of a lot of defenders right there it was a heck of a throw you see hendricks is underneath and we see right there he does a good job he runs he runs the corner lester hayes off and he and then he cuts to the inside so it's first down giants they go on a quick count in wolfram being chased by piquel [Music] today as he did last week against the eagles i don't think so you know early in the season he wanted to get the ball more and of course rob carpenter was carrying it more then and now since he's the only backpack he's going to get a lot of work he's already carried 15 times today [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bob nelson [Applause] reacts quickly a little qualification going on between howie long and one of the giants i don't know that i'm going to get into an altercation with him look at the arms on that guy not how we long i'll tell you he is something of course is nelson third down and long and that's how he long okay we watched films of him yesterday and i think we both agree that he may be the best defensive end in the world well he's got everything good technique good fitness great strength bruner steps up into the pocket incomplete lag is down however penalty is going to be against mike mayne byron williams was the intended receiver against the raiders defensive pass interference number 22 first down first mike haynes is playing in his second game as a raider he played some last week against buffalo he's just gotten in the game here in the second quarter and we see him here you see he's the outside guy he starts in there he's okay he bumps now the ball's in the air it looked like he made contact before he got there with his left shoulder [Applause] so it's a first down giant seven three have come by penalty bruner fakes the wolf hook on first down scrambles to roll intended for moat [Music] incomplete [Music] all over the field we've seen him in the backfield we've seen him back here running with the tight end i'll tell you he does everything on this play doesn't he lester hayes i'll tell you he has a different type of stance doesn't he gets down there low looking into the backfield looks like he's ready to broadcast or pounce on the receiver here's spinner kind of roll left to get under pressure does get it away with more he can't hang on [Applause] [Music] just managed to get rid of it third and ten kind of situation you don't like to be in what happened at st louis on thanksgiving day [Applause] every time they had a third down situation they needed more than 10 10 yards on thanksgiving every third down they had over 10 yards to go average that's hard to win that way [Applause] eddie out of the shotgun [Music] headings to the greater 35 down at the 32 by van mcelroy 30-yard gain as headings [Music] and aggressiveness to go with it and i'll tell you the giants are doing a good job of pass protecting here you see because bruno now can step up you see he can step up he can get the ball out there to headings he had man-to-man coverage and once once a man who was man-to-man on him fell down he was able to pick up another 20 yards but hey it all started with the fast protection on that it belt does here let's see if he goes to work again on first down no the counter play again inside the raider 30 to about the 26 bob nelson on the tackle that was a different type of counter play there they usually try and get that to the outside but the raider defense was springing it out but cut it right back in a lot tighter than it usually does but heck he still picked up six yards so it'll be second and four that's a comfortable situation atlanta on the school board against the packers is [Music] [Applause] [Music] wilfred 21-7 about three hey henry and matt millen that was a heck of a play by hendricks here he played both the outside and the inside on that there's ted play there watch he's the outside guy now wolfbox starts to the inside he plays inside knocks the card down and then he bounces back to the outside and makes a tackle that's what happens when you're six foot seven he has a full but stomach muscle they say it doesn't bother him as long as he goes straight ahead but when he twists or turns or tries to change direction it does bother us it may not have been a blitz i don't know where he came from but they had some kind of a stunt i'm sure because he came up the middle [Applause] well long will come in and he'll play tackle he plays in the inside on passing down and it was a stunt he just got free straight up the middle luna looked up and there was 75 howie long right in his face so the giants were knocked out of field goal position first half the punt hey jennings back to kicks greg pruitt back deep to the raiders tony caldwell bill parcell said yesterday in a meeting they've got another guy on special teams who really does a good job and that's the guy he mentioned he was talking about caldwell but you think that the giants being concerned with caldwell would have had someone on him now what happens they get it blocked there but jennings was turning to his left trying to get the ball out of bounds now watch jenny's here he burns he kicks it right into caldwell [Applause] so the raiders are in good shape they lead seven to two [Music] here's why it was blocked well watch this jennings wants to kick to the left so he's pointed to the left byron hunt is out here the end man on the line of scrimmage now if jennings is punting straight ahead it's okay but with jennings turning into him byron hunt allows too much penetration it looks like hunt was blocking for a normal punt and jennings was punting for the sideline that hunt didn't know that jennings was aimed in that direction [Applause] [Music] [Applause] story about this guy when he was drafted by the cowboys apparently they saw something and they said we want you to try to play tight end and he said no i'm i don't want to play tight in i'm a running back so they had too many running bikes but he went to the giants for a week as a running back and is now the league league's leading receiver after the raiders convinced him that that was the spot for him you know originally he came to the raiders as a running back and they used him in passing situations not at tight end but out of the backfield funny how things developed we'll get only a couple of yards out of that perspective ryan kelly again on the stop you know when he first came with the raiders he was a special teams captain because there's a heck of a special teams guy the other thing that they did with him because he was such a good athlete they made him the punt center the punt snapper and he's still doing that kansas city lead seattle 14-7 second quarter san diego without the quarterback 21-7 rams leading buffalo seven nothing [Applause] back to throw good protection [Applause] [Music] this is the thing as we watch the raiders now we'll see it it's third down and long yardage but they don't make any of those substitutions they'll still be there they'll still have the two backs in the backfield one tight end and two wide receivers tom flores was saying yesterday one of the reasons they do that is because number one christensen christensen is such a good receiver and so is marcus allen and it's a it's another way to get the ball to marcus allen said he'll get the ball 55 more times by pass reception that's the number of receptions he had coming in here comes the giant blitz live hand help ball is batted away by harry carson and fitted for christensen that was the coolest bat away i think i've ever seen in my life gary carson was like he was standing out in the park watch carson he's 53 he's playing his zone he's backing up squaring off look he sees christensen there okay we're going to see him watch him he just reaches in and goes 47 yards 47 yards out for chris barr that's what he can reach [Music] so with 209 now left to play in the first half it's the raiders 10 for giants 2. at the los angeles coliseum that summer all john madden the los angeles raiders lead the giants by the score of ten to two [Music] chris bar to kick off [Music] and we will probably have before play and we will have indeed the two minute anything else warning the raiders 10 the giants too [Music] many around the league today still no wild albedo or defensive right in but the raiders otherwise it's the same as they began [Applause] ernest [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 32-yard gain ernest gray having a great year watching he starts here from the outside he's running an in-pattern against the zone you see the corner he he lays off watch did he's pointing in there to him gray makes the catch gets out here to the sideline [Applause] [Music] [Applause] from the 45 back to throw again [Applause] [Music] finally makes the stop inside the 15. lester hayes on the assist [Applause] [Music] [Applause] from the left side to gray and then in from the right side to williams the raiders are playing off and that's a heck of a pass pattern here you see they're playing playing off they're giving too much cushion out here in the outside and we just see that in get in there and they have a big hole right in the middle on both those plays the giants come roaring right back in good shape giants took their first time out they have two left 134 left first half raiders leading ten to two you saw the time-out situation just over a minute and a half left in the first place scott bruner looking intended for ernest gray a little bit behind him mike haynes right with him well on that one degrade mike haynes was so far off that grey just beat him in the inside here he's playing man-to-man he's playing an inside technique gray is running inside and hangs at that ball go right into his hand it's tough to run and end down there in the goal line when the corner is playing the end what they should do is come back with that same thing and run a corner bend them to the inside and then back outside of course mike haynes hadn't been here that long hadn't played that much this year this was doing the motion raiders on a blitz winner gets it away incomplete no flags melody was the intended receiver van mcelroy was out there with him [Music] this one here is good pressure here on bruner this time steve does a little fake here here comes nelson he's coming up the middle rod martin from the outside hits him just as he throws the ball but that should have been caught he has a guy hanging on his shoulder he gets the ball out there he has to catch those powers that was a good throw especially under those pressure conditions you'll have pressure on this one [Applause] third down and cannon bruner back pedals and here comes that pressure they go in the corner antenna for gray back there with him [Music] here comes ali see we see haynes out there again he's playing the inside they run the quick up now the thing that grey did wrong there probably you should bend him in a little bring him in get that corner to think you're going inside because he's playing inside then you get a little room to the outside gray just went straight up and haines just stayed right with him from 31 yards out ali sheet with scott bruner hoving [Applause] and the sheep is perfect well it's not to have yet [Applause] a minute and 16 seconds left to play [Music] in the first half [Music] raiders 10 giants 5. upcoming next saturday a college football basketball doubleheader at noon eastern time florida state led by their outstanding runner greg allen meets interstate rival florida led by their playing quarterback wayne peace then at 4 eastern time one of college basketball's great rivalries will be renewed as bobby knight's indiana hoosiers meet the powerful kentucky wildcats and they did look powerful yesterday all next saturday on cbs sports and bowie is back for kentucky they got some other players [Music] you know what surprised me on that last drive is when the giants took a time out with a minute 34 seconds because one thing you want to take all the time off the clock that you can and now they left a minute 16 seconds there and there's no one better than the raiders last two minutes and a half for the last few minutes of the game all right through it clee montgomery back deep for the raiders this is montgomery wilbur's brother [Applause] montgomery gets back to the 30. [Music] one of the tankers along with lawrence taylor [Applause] finally bill parcell said uh the heck was let's put our best athletes on the kickoff in front coverage teams and that's why lawrence taylor's there lyle alzado towards the reader's dressing room you know where he has that ice back there that could be an achilles you see that he has the it's on the back of the ankle which is the achilles tendon there's an injured cameraman going with him [Applause] that's the sympathy pain stuff down there taylor after plucking just gets it away flag is down marcus allen fumbles giants headed i believe scramble is on but there's a penalty marker down pluckett was hit late i think they're gonna call by lawrence taylor which is really gonna upset him they don't know what to be upset about yet because they're just trying to get the ball the raiders did get the ball so it's a raiders ball now we'll go back and find out what the penalty is or he may be upset that he wouldn't be as upset if they you know as if they if they recovered the fumble he would have been more upset that he's going to be upset they're going to call roughing the passer look watch lawrence ceiling defense right personal foul roughing the passer hitting him from the rear after the pass first down they call lawrence taylor the right end he's a right linebacker i watch him here now plunkett he's going to come from the outside here he comes right here plunkett throws the ball and he hit him after he let go he really didn't hit him in the head though he just hit him hit him in the back he didn't get as upset as he did earlier in the year [Music] [Applause] made the stop [Music] here's just what you were talking about 50 seconds still left to play in the first half well you know you see jim plunkett coming off the side here and tom flory's talking to him and they've been in that position so often you know the end of the half the end of the game they're behind they need something that uh there's no one that does a better job not only to the players it's also a tribute to playing coaching you know what it is i think it's one of those things that the raiders have that tradition and then the new players come in and they learn that you know we're never out of the game uh we always have time we just have to you know stay after it keep going and they just believe in that type of thing what is your feeling because of your long association not anymore with the raiders do you have any emotional involvement with him not as much you know had we done this game the first year i required it would have been a lot tougher but there are 15 players out of the 49 that were there when i was there so you know you travel around you get farther and farther away so it's really not that tough now second down about one both teams have two timeouts remaining drops gets it up the middle to crescent can't find the handle had it juggled it lawrence taylor had it by the jersey and as christensen tried to recover taylor wouldn't let him back lawrence taylor is playing todd christensen man to man he hits him square up there gives him a forearm now he's going to run with him christensen has it while he starts to bobble it and as he's fobbling trying to get it lawrence taylor grabs him [Applause] an amazing player third and one more i want to beat on you a little before i cover you [Music] before harry carson gets it down 15 yards for marcus allen i think this is the thing that the raiders realize that when you get in this situation you have plenty of time you don't have to go back and throw everything you could mix you can let them rush you faster think it's a pass again get them all collapsed to the inside and give the ball to someone like marcus allen that's the thing you know when you get down and you have over a minute you have all your time out that's really a lot of time did you know this marcus allen then when he knew he was going to get hit cover up the ball he got what he thought he could get he knew he had a first down obviously and then when he saw a collision was imminent he covered up the ball with both hands well that's when they have to do it you know they can keep it out there while they're running but when they have to get it away is just when or just before they get hit [Music] um next sunday the nfl today will begin it st louis at the new york giants the rams at philadelphia and atlanta will be at washington that begins at 12 30 and the doubleheader will have dallas at seattle tampa bay at san francisco the 49ers that's coming up next sunday [Music] timeouts remaining now the raiders down to one with 38 seconds left to play funny and the giants to do and when they have that one they want to save that for the field goal [Music] hurry up here because they don't want to use that last time out if i was trying to get the ball out of bounds or in the end zone [Music] [Applause] complete calvin muhammad was the intended receiver if indeed was trying to get it to it what he was trying to do is just get that ball out out of bounds here's a play before here's cliff branch he's running up holds him runs back to the inside gets that ball for the first down then they hurry up get the ball out now it's second down 15 seconds they'll take one shot in the end zone now they make it of course it's a touchdown if they don't they'll keep the field goal don't forget they have the luxury of that one other time out remaining so this is a well-conceived well-planned drive by the radio [Applause] [Music] to the end zone france incomplete he was covered well phil courier back there with him along with terry canard he was and of course the giants knew that that they were going to take a shot at the end zone and if you're going to take the shot in the end zone you'd want to do it with cliff brandt now as you say with having one timeout there's nine seconds they can still take another shot at it here that looks like what they're gonna do far is up and ready but not on the field as calls to play but the only place to throw here is in the end zone you have to get the ball in the end zone christensen the tight end is just off the line is on the right side of the left [Applause] now with four seconds left to go they'll have to have the field goal unit appear [Applause] well done though well they did the right thing they moved the ball they mixed it up they passed they ran they used two timeouts they saved one they don't need it because of an incomplete path but they got in a position where they didn't get the touchdown in good position for a field goal 38 yards out for chris barr he has hit his longest of this year 47 earlier [Music] he has hit again and the raiders move further in front that's the the end of the first half as bill parcells takes his troops into the coliseum locker room along with the raiders and tom flores 13-5 [Applause] don't know that we've had that score before but the raiders lead the giants by that margin 13-5 at the half you're not going to believe what we're about to show you the atlanta falcons have just done it a 50-yarder with time running out in the first half they pulled it within three points of the green bay packers there is the score they'll kick that extra point to make it 24 20. you would think that the defense would have learned its lesson let's show you what's happening in this game right now now the packers dominated early here's lynn hickey look at this catch by james lofton for a touchdown now it was interference at the one yard line on lofton so dickey rolling out nobody opening bangs on into the end zone and hey this game's pretty easy they were leading 21 points and back came the falcons william andrews caught a touchdown pass ran in for his second score then look at this big fan to the right here comes er you can't believe it boroski's arm is nowhere near as strong as barkowski but look at that same result three packers background defense he comes up with it i don't believe in half a second everybody said what terrible defense san francisco had last week that'll never happen again it did happen again check this one out the san diego chargers right now lead the denver broncos 21 let me tell you a story that games a quarterback by the name of danny fouts the chargers are a totally different football team when he is back in there he's thrown a pair of touchdown passes to kellen winslow 12 of 19 for 141 yards you know he's getting ready for thursday night in san diego here come al davis and the raiders and spouts wants to be ready for that one seattle and kansas city kansas city was ahead here 21-7 the seahawks have come back 21-14 kurt warner has scored on a dandy 28-yard touchdown run the rams and buffalo vince ferragamo has thrown two touchdown passes moments ago he hit preston dinard that put them ahead of the bills by a score of 14-7 and of course the game you're watching here the raiders they always find a way they lead the giants right now by a score of 13 to five now here came the safety the giants on the board jimmy plunkett just simply couldn't get the handle and the giants stormed in on him but you know it's not going to take the raiders longer no way they know how to win you know we talked about that a lot with that company know how to win here's a quick pass to down hassle back for the score and of course the raiders lead at halftime 13-5 i still can't get over the atlanta falcons here we got more scores and highlights we'll hear from john riggins that's coming up on the nfl today after these messages from your local stations earth going into today's game the washington redskins were more heavily favored than any team this season picked by 15 points yet the eagles played them very tight what happened in that game a couple of key things in the first half mark bay went out with an injury and forced the redskins to become a left-handed running team they brought john riggins in the second half simply as a clock killer 28-21 at halftime 28-24 final the eagles have to be happy even though they lost couple plays go the other way the eagles win the game let me show you one of them joe theismann here wants art monk royale young's gonna get a hand on the ball but instead of deflecting it away he tipped at the monk for a touchdown and you know what that means come on bum bunch give us a celebration they do it together now don't they and how about this combination for the eagles you have to love this guy my quick is averaging over 22 yards of catch here's another touchdown for it the big fella john riggins two more touchdowns 21 on the season a record you're really going strong john i've had an awful lot of help this year and i've been fortunate that everybody seems to go out of bounds on the one or the two yard line so i've i've had a lot of two foot putts this year but they say whether you drive for show and you putt for dough so i feel pretty good john the redskins didn't need it two foot putt here watch downtown charlie brown slip a tackle and he's gone touchdown washington john you gotta be thinking now about the dallas cowboys two weeks in dallas when i saw dallas play thursday of course i was kind of hoping they might lose but the same time the loss by dallas on thanksgiving day wouldn't have done us any good if we don't go down and beat dallas and dallas get all the chores done early on december 11. that's when we shoot for the whole ball of wax the washington redskins against the dallas cowboys i'll tell you something that game can wind up being more entertaining than a super bowl game now the chicago bears have suddenly come alive 13-3 they down san francisco before the game i spoke to their new president mike mccaskey and he pinpointed today's confrontation as critical to the ball club we've had two solid ball games in a row i think we're going to learn a lot today about the players and about the head coach and it was a more calm mike ditka along the bare side and chicago now has pulled to within a game of first place in the nfc central division that's how well they are playing elsewhere around the league of course the minnesota vikings had an opportunity to stay in first but they blew it new orleans down to merv 17-16 the saints have a lot going for them right now brent here's plays like this wayne wilson going over from the two yard line for an opening touchdown and of course paint sands fans love it here is steve dills now pulling out drilling one to tony galbraith kim saber gets his offense going watch this a long pass by the snake darn right gene goodlow comes up with it down the nine yard line [Music] just a few plays later stan save her hands off to wayne wilson he dies over again for a second touchdown of the day and the saints walk away with a win and let's check the nfc central standings right now minnesota and detroit are tied remember the lions beat pittsburgh on thanksgiving green bay appears to be moving up as they are beating atlanta and of course chicago is one game behind the bears last three games two against green bay and one against minnesota now elsewhere this afternoon the tampa bay buccaneers won their second game of the year 33-24 over houston houston though stays ahead now in the race for the top draft choice steve young of byu the left-handed quarterback may be their choice the new england patriots were routed by the new york jets 26-3 richard todd finally found his long man wesley walker right here 64 yards for a touchdown and the jets are starting to play like everyone assumed they would when the season began and the hottest team right now the cleveland browns they have won three in a row they're only a game behind pittsburgh in that chase in the afc central division what a play this is brian scythe is flush from the pocket goes to ozzie newsome he slips a tackle now newsome's got speed and how about strength that is not how you tackle someone you get the leverage on them and get them out of bounds 41-23 and sam rotigliano may be going to the playoffs how about that irving now let's send you back to the stadium the second half about ready to start at the coliseum in los angeles it's 13 to 5 the raiders over the giants the most unusual score and so far a game that really hasn't surprised either john madden nor i uh john i suppose if you go back to the conferences and the talks we had with both coaches yesterday they've pretty much done exactly what they plan to do well they have and i think i think the raiders are just trying to as tom floyd said be patient he said we can't go after that big one early but i think they have something in mind that they want to come back and maybe have some explosiveness the second half you know it's been a conservative first half i think that's a that's probably a kind word and i wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that these teams don't see each other that often i think so i think on the raiders side it does you know it's not like playing the san diego's and the denver's they playing the giants they haven't played them in a long time and and they're really kind of sparring with the giants i think the giants are probably happy to play this type of game and the raiders do turn the ball over they haven't yet so they're probably expecting maybe we can get something in the second half that'll be the play that we need to turn this thing over so i don't and i don't think you either see any real changes and plans on the part of either coach as the second half comes up i can see the raiders in the second half trying to go deep more which is what uh tom flores told us they might do yesterday they have to be patient first and then when the opportunity presents itself they will indeed try to go deeper you can see the score at the half is 13 to five as the raiders and the giants both return to the field [Music] as john madden and i were talking just a minute ago there have been only two previous meetings between these two teams raiders want them both so unfamiliarity might be a factor on both ends of the field this is going to be montgomery montgomery almost broke out of the pack does get back outside the 30 and laurence taylor put the clamp on halftime statistics pretty even really [Applause] it is and the big thing there is there's no turnovers by either side i think that's why we have this type of game i really had the feeling that both teams were sparring in the first half maybe the giants were waiting for one of those frequent raider turnovers they just haven't given to them yet [Music] raider first down at their own 30. they lead 13 to 5. had a good first half [Music] [Applause] up close to midfield about the 47. cliff branch is 35 years old we were talking yesterday about who is the oldest starting wide receiver he might be i'll tell you but he looks the same you see i mean he has so much experience he's coming across he just feels he feels there's carson sitting in there he's going to go underneath he feels him there when he just goes up to the outside what's 79 here bruce davis he's doing a pretty good job of blocking taylor keeping him to the outside and pluck it feeling that pressure from taylor stepped up into the pocket very nicely [Music] [Applause] kenny king harry carson came over to make the hit kenny king who i remember here's past always wore those black high top shoes now he's in white shoes and looks quicker white low top shoes it was funny uh marcus allen was leading on that play and he couldn't find an outside linebacker there he just kept running never did find a guy out there to block second and two [Music] along with carrie jackson but it's a raider first down [Applause] it's a pretty good match up here watch here 32 is marcus allen he's blocking man-to-man on lawrence taylor look for a halfback he takes him in there pretty good gets that helmet in shoulder square gets taylor going back that's not a bad block there say what he did come firing off the ball didn't he that helmet the helmet paint the paint the front wide left bucket back to throw looking for blanche branch looking in the other direction to christensen todd christensen struggles to stay on his feet knocked out of bounds by bill courier christensen doesn't look all that classy i don't mean that without disrespect but he does know how to get open well you know the thing that helps him is he has two speed receivers on the outside and cliff branch markham barnwell they go deep and he comes underneath a lot [Music] you almost have to have your name start with a c to play tight end for the raiders don't you casper chesterton [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] was the ball carrier but the flag is thrown in that area of holding that's in the area where they usually catch the center or either guard right there in the running play when there's a running play up the middle and they throw it that quickly right at the center it's one of those middle people in there holding offense holding number 50 second down dave dalby right in the middle right in the middle they throw that flag it's usually thrown right at the gap raiders have only had two offensive centers in the history of their franchise it goes back to 1960. the great gym otto hall of famer jim otto and now dave dalby [Music] [Applause] and off to hawking frank breaks a couple of tacklers gets about five yards out of a play that looked like he wouldn't get back to the linus finish kerry canard makes the stop you know the giants don't line up in an even defense much you see here they don't have the center covered dolby comes out cuts carson so now the fullback can start out that way and then cut back into that gap [Applause] oh we got a good block on harry parson knocked him down and then that allowed the cut back it'll be third and seven throwing down for the raiders marcus allen and frank hawkins [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] 36-yard touchdown pass well thrown by jim hunter well you know it's just a matter of time for the waiters they're going to get that up they're going to get deep you know that's what they talked about at halftime this situation they caught the giants in a press playing a tight man-to-man coverage malcolm barnwell just ran that quick up let's see if we can see it here in the left is the outside guy he starts in he goes inside a little then back to the outside that's terry jackson on him good throw right over the inside shoulder bar for the extra point and it's good let's see if we can watch the pass protection here plunkett has good time he's just backing up throws the ball out touchdown let barnwell away from the defender that's a good throw barnwell [Music] john madden at the los angeles coliseum it's 20 for the raiders and five for the giants bar will kick off [Applause] [Music] chases which will put five yards deep into the end zone and he stays there [Applause] joe morris came running over and pointed to the ground keep your knee on the ground tonight on 60 minutes [Applause] tonight on cbs first will be 60 minutes i should say followed by memorial day and then trapper john md coming up immediately following football there is a flag on the play that last kickoff by far i think the raiders were offside kicking team number 56 offside be a re-kick five-yard penalty jeff barnes is number 56 and he'll kick it off over again this time far from the 30. [Music] you know that deep pass to barnwell you know it's just a matter of time they just kind of sparred that first half and that's what they look for you know they're setting that up the whole half they're trying to find the situation find that situation where they can get it that third and long was the situation got the tight coverage couldn't wait went right to it it was third and seven and they've been going short going short been going across the middle and exactly what flores tom flores the raider coach said yesterday we have to be patient and i think that's about as much patience as they can have one half and then they go in there at halftime in a locker room and they have polaroids you see they take polaroid pictures of all the defenses in the first half then in the second half then at half time they go in and look at these things and find out how they can beat the defense [Applause] [Music] bar hangs it high butch wolfer comes up can't find the handle finally does pick it up at the 11 yard line dokie williams was down there quickly or things go wrong they go wrong don't they they had taken it like it was they would have had the ball at the 20. i'll tell you he misjudged it you see what he happened there he was he was back about 10 yards and he said he's shorter than that then he had to make that burst there at the end he just didn't get to the ball luckily he recovered it [Music] so scott bruner at quarterback brings out his giant team and they'll start from their own 11. [Music] mike davis on the tackle 13-yard gain i think the giants probably did some work at halftime i figured that they were running on first down all the time the raider defense was tightening up and that's a good time to pass first down when the defense is in there tight to stop the run [Music] first down [Music] john was the head coach good coach yeah yeah he was a real good coach i was laughing at charlie sumner who was staying here he's a defensive coach he was saying what the heck we hit him in the backfield but tom was an excellent coach he was a very uh a good tactician you know very calm just the opposite of me a calming influence unlike you he was the raiders first quarterback as a matter of fact here's brunner [Music] [Applause] [Music] lester hayes and mr thought he should start coming back and so the ball went incomplete you know ted hendricks is a little like too tall jones when he comes from that side and he's rushing the passer and the guy starts to throw and turns toward him ted stops his rush and gets his hands up and that was what caused that pass to go that way big dead kick him his nickname is kick him why stork [Music] okay [Music] [Applause] number 71 is the one who got the hand up and knocked it away another one of those big young guys they have i'll tell you they're really impressed with pacquel and this is what a young guy has to learn you're pushing up the middle push push when the guy goes reach that hand up make him throw over you see him he took that right hand and just slapped it right back at him here's dave jennings back to kick through it feels it trying to get around the corner behind that wall but john chuggle was down there to make the stop 42-yard front two-yard return a net of 40 raiders 20 giants 5 9 59 left to play in the third quarter the raiders 20 the giants five raiders with their record of nine and three the giants three [Music] [Applause] you know i was telling you about ted hendricks what happened is we first got ted and we were having a practice it was a dummy scrimmage marv hubbard broke through ted was chasing him and he went to jump over him and he didn't jump over me kicked him in the head and knocked him out so we found out that hubbard was okay so they started nicknaming him kick him in the head cat and they shortened it to kick him so that's his nickname that's kenny king dancing in the backfield and not quite getting back to the line of scrimmage mark wilson broke his shoulder after he had been given the starting job [Music] talking to mark before the game down the sideline and he was saying that they didn't put it in a cast they put just two pins in it and it's feeling good [Music] [Applause] is very close to a first down about a half yard shy looks like mark haynes tripped him up [Music] this is the thing that the raiders do well in fact they do it a lot like the cowboys they didn't pick up a first down on that play they're gonna have to punt but but they give the ball around i mean kenny king marcus allen throw to todd christensen the outside receivers they get everyone involved in the offense clock running with 8 15 left to play third quarter pete shaw back deep for the giants only the second punt for ray guy if you forget about the one after the safety [Music] rod christensen the tight end is the center guy doesn't get this one it bounces bounces away from pete shaw he heard him say get out of the way it turns out to be a pretty good effort by ray guy 20-5 the raiders lead and the giants will start at their own 16-yard line with 7 48 left to play in the third quarter [Music] raiders who have been coaches of the year al davis now the managing general partner john rauch john madden who's going on to great things and tom flores who is now the head coach prove the raiders have had good players over that period of time that's what makes coaches coach of the year good players runner back to throw fakes commissioner now throws after [Music] mister benson out there in front of him bill pickell rod martin and bob nelson all got out there very quickly that was one of those things that was an option thing he had the screen or the deep one and he faked to the screen then tried to go deep and there was nothing there now watch him he'll come out here and he's going to look out here see he fakes the screen here now he tries to go deep there's nothing there so he has to come back off to the screen first he has benson out there and he doesn't get the block good hustle by pikel they only got a yard out of a fake screen fake option back to the screen bruner off [Music] you hear that guy say down here he said way to go kick him i told you that's his nickname right now ernest gray the intended receiver that's john matusak remember old twos he still walks around with a size medium shirt on that big body [Applause] [Music] usually has a companion [Music] a couple of other scores kansas city 28 seattle 14 san diego with outset quarterback 21 denver seven rams over buffalo 14-7 third quarter third down here missler in motion later speaker blitz luna operates out of the shotgun hayes is the only man with a shot now haynes turns him back inside lester hayes got out in front and james davis cut down gray 62 yards for ernest ray there's a guy that's having a big year for the giants ernest gray bruner out of the shotgun you know that height really helps scott bruner because he can stand up there he can see he can find gray in there it looks like right here he should have just used his feet stayed out there keep going got a block there then he had to cut back he was caught from behind let's watch gordon king here he's doing a pretty good job of pass protection he takes townsend to the inside just puts them right down to bruner's feet that was a heck of a throw by bruno though with that guy right at his feet ernest grave has caught three passes for 99 yards already luna goes back and right to work in the direction of gray again but bob nelson was looking eye to eye with bruner and he had to get rid of it i think scott bruner felt the pressure on that one and as you said he just didn't want to take the sack there and he just threw it away because bob nelson 51 there he gets in free no one touched him watch him here here's 51 here see his point a little delayed he finds a hole there there's no one scott bruner sees him says i gotta get rid of that thing so that'll make it second and ten the giants at the rate of twenty dave stahl is the man who came and made the stop along with bob nelson one more time stahls is a back up nose tackle he usually goes in the game on passing situation you see he makes that move around the center he was making a pass rush move he thought it was a pass and he said look what i found a little draw coming into my arms and if it had been a pass he'd have been all over brunner i know he made a good pass brush move that outside arm over right up the middle and found a draw so it's third down [Music] intercepted by my kane that's the first turnover of the game good play by hane they went through a lot to get him well it was a bad read here because this is double coverage watch gray out he'll see haynes was inside out watch him he has the outside he has help inside see it's a double double see he has inside out so when gray starts to the inside haynes doesn't go with him he just stays on that outside and goes right back there [Music] pressure on the quarterback by jeff barnes and the interception by haynes as i said they went through a lot to get him his team leads 20 to 5. [Music] let's look at that again the interception by haynes well you know in the first half haynes was playing a man-to-man inside technique now they're playing a double coverage inside out you see him he has the outside safety mike davis has the inside so he just waited right out there for the interception [Music] [Applause] he's happy to be back in football [Applause] he moved lawrence taylor over to the left on defense and they moved into the right place charlie hannah came up to try [Music] [Applause] george martin usually comes in in passing situations number 75 [Applause] turnover comparisons the good teams can overcome it the less than good teams can't exactly true i think you can afford a couple of bad stabs if you're a good team if you're a bad team you can lock it up bill courier see jim plunkett he raised up to three fingers that means that he wants if there's third down and short yardage and he wants his short yardage offense in there which means he'll get derrick jensen and hasselbeck he caught his first touchdown pass barnwell got the other the no wide receivers there'll be three tight ends eric jensen number 31 lined up in the backfield to the left [Applause] to make contact iron straight great quickness i was going to say frank hawkins is a raider short yardage specialist like pete banasak used to do he's not a big fullback he only weighs 210 pounds watch him he starts in here to the right feels just soft spot back here see this hole right here feels that cuts right back into it and of course picks up the first down as a matter of fact john they really don't have a full back tight do they no they have all halfbacks they have six half back types on this roster [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] you just can't run a pattern against the zone you feel it i watch flip france he's right here he's gonna go in now look he feels where all those guys are he situates himself right in the middle of four of them works back a little and gets the ball you don't run all out against the zone you feel for holes in it raiders have always had guys who know how to get open and i'll tell you fred blittenbach had a lot to do with that [Music] [Applause] the barnwell from plunkett inside the giant 30 to the 28 markings that offender 14 yards on that pickup let's go back to new york again for an nfl update and brent musberger [Applause] tom lindicki is still at it for the green bay packers three touchdowns today so that's 29 for the season he leads the nfl two to his tight end paul kaufman now the falcons have come right back they're on the move but they trail it by ten points back to patton john here at the coliseum it's the raiders 20 to 10 five [Music] ryan kelly made the hit i'll tell you that right side of the raider line right now mickey marvin and henry lawrence they love that when you get in there and run in there behind them they love to run block watch the right side here mickey marvin and henry lawrence they're going to do a cross block see henry lawrence the tackle comes down mickey marvin goes to the outside they get a good push from the offside pruitt's gets through they'll make it second and six as pruitt got four henry said yesterday at practice henry lawrence we went back to basics everybody feels a lot more comfortable with it taylor on the blitz barnwell the intended receiver bill currier out there with him i remember when the raiders got henry lawrence we saw him in the senior ball ed two tall jones the dallas cowboys was the number one player chosen that year henry lawrence was on the same team we're watching him practice and henry was blocking too tall i remember i said you know if 2 12's the best guy in the draft and this guy's blocking him heck maybe we ought to take him that's how we drafted henry lawrence number one that year you know he was a heck of a basketball player in high school that trackman not as big as he is now obviously but he averaged over 20 points a game flag is down as hawkins is the ball carrier and he is not backward he used to tell me that stuff is that true well he went i went to high school in florida and know a little bit about what went on down there and yes he was a good basketball player as i say averaged over 20 points a game the palmetto got him with all those titles stuff gloves he couldn't shoot a basketball his life depended on him he probably couldn't dunk it now he couldn't dribble it i don't know he fell down pretty well yesterday caught up in a hurry you were showing how i chewed them out one day holding number 70. uh-oh third that's henry anytime you start to talk about a guy and watch him he's going to do something wrong hey henry don't do that because now he's upset i had a game once and the referee walked him off the field and he called the timeout i said why'd you do that he said he's goofy i said i know it but why'd you take him off the field that's somebody to be afraid that's just the way he is [Music] third down right down the middle to calvin muhammad the ball just went right through his hands it was a good throw by twinkle he was wide open muhammad was underneath watch this against his own watch him he's going to start off here he comes in motion and now the ball will be snapped he just continues on underneath you see they drive the defense deep he has jackson feet in here right in his hand sorry guy will make another appearance hating his eyes against the sun a minute 50 left to play in the third quarter and the score of the raiders 20. the giants five pete shaw back deep for the giants great guy mingling it [Music] tried to hang the knuckler ball hit right on the goal line and he almost did a whale of a job as it turned out it's a 14-yard net the raiders 20 giants five in the closing seconds of quarter number three 141 remaining third quarter at the los angeles coliseum site of the 1984 olympic games [Music] pretty impressive site [Music] malcolm scott was the receiver one of the giants two tight ends was that something that's one of the first time that the giants used two bags the raider defense was all yelling two backs two bats like that was a new discovery in football first down tendencies rushing plays 12-11 passing plays [Applause] [Music] has carried 21 times today already for 58 yards look at that counter play again you see he runs it from half back now he has to wait for his tackle see his tackle brad benson he gets out in front makes the cut back there makes hayes miss and of course mcilroy makes a tackle another guy it's been a very pleasant surprise with the raiders dan mcelroy son of a baptist minister [Applause] [Music] [Applause] by the raiders hendrix is going to come right down from here see the left hand side he's the guy that that makes the the first vote see he gets him there he makes bruner step up he gets him a little and the strong safety mike davis is up right inside look at the cal in there going for the ball around the other side that's the end of the third quarter with the score the raiders 20 the giants five and we now pause for a word from your local station [Applause] [Music] john madden the giants out of the huddle as we begin the first fourth quarter start from their own 28-yard line in this wearing motion [Music] but he gets knocked back [Applause] greg townsend on the bottom pile number 83 help from howie long stop howie long is normally the left defensive end of the raiders he's playing the right side now now lyle alzado was hurt he took an inside move on that one he's so doggone strong that he just collapsed the whole side of the giant line [Applause] [Music] stalls is now [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] man mcelroy back there with him number 26. watch how he long here he's the guy that we're talking about you see they started double billiard is blocking him good pass protection has him there a little now watch when he sees a move here he starts to hustle to the outside oh there it is to that side let me let me go get that quarterback point [Music] dave jennings back to putt holding 57. [Music] gets into giant territory knocked out of bounds by dave jennings the punter johnny carson [Music] 42-yard punt 21-yard return by pruitt back in behind those wires and all those petitions john madden [Music] [Applause] long way away from the field but this is a great place from which to view you can see everything that goes on just and if you about with the raw eyes you can watch it on the monitor first down as goes back to throw on first vance held on a blitz marcus allen [Applause] bill courier came up that was a good effort by courier outbound 101 that's a challenge i'll tell you and alan just took that ball and exploded into courier courier had good position square head up shoulders knees bent the whole type of thing but alan really exploded into him didn't he he has that explosion he has exceeded i think you said earlier just about all the expectations that the raiders had for him they knew he was a good back but they didn't know he was this good he got a first down on his own [Applause] i'll tell you he was exploding forward lawrence taylor was coming across the field and exploding sideways that was a heck of an explosion versus an explosion watch taylor here he's on the other side he sees it watch right down the line flattened down right down the line now watch this collision here he's going forward taylor was going sideways and [Music] that's a long way to run to make that laurence taylor a very active player some of the other scores seattle kansas city now tied first down raiders and plunkett go through on first down again and again van pelt [Applause] and that's something that just doesn't happen by chance he's standing right there on the sidelines look he knows where the sidelines are he has to get the ball keep that left foot there the right foot he got it that is something that's balanced being able to hang san diego still leading denver 21-7 fourth quarter rams 21-14 over buffalo they need to win both teams getting to that place of the season [Music] on the tackle jim plunkett people keep asking it while why he keeps playing why he keeps coming back he keeps saying the same thing i like the game i'll tell you you don't see that on an artificial turf field see those birds there they're down there getting some of those worms you got worms inside grass fields i thought they were at the seeds intended for christian terry christensen and jerry canard almost picked it off a penalty marker is down as plunkett was really happy i'll tell you canard almost had that ball it would have been a touchdown but it wouldn't have counted because the giants roughed the passer second time today was bill courier on a blitz who hit plunkett 12 14 left to play in this contest the raiders leading defense number 75 personal foul roughing the passer first down number 70. that's big leonard marshall he's a rookie now he's going to come right here we see him right from the outside we just missed him there but he hit him after after that after he threw the ball i think we might have accused the wrong guy i think he was courier coming from the outside they messed up the exchange between plunkett and marcus allen and now we're in a scrambler i think the raiders jumped off sides in addition to that it looked like to me that the left tackle bruce davis moved they didn't call it yeah he did you see the left tackle move the officials didn't see that this was going to be a draw delay play one could put it in there properly just bounced right out allen was looking for some place to go before he had the ball second [Music] [Applause] greater down a lot of effort by marcus allen on a play that should have been resumed for a long [Music] you don't teach those types of [Music] [Applause] you know things that old saying that great players make things happen and i think that's an example some players make them happen some watch them happen with them don't know what's happening it makes them happy what made that one happen [Applause] [Music] let's watch it here now marcus allen is going to start off here to the left but he gets penetration there he gets knocked off here spun around here spun around there turns back and says dude i see something out here todd christensen make a block for me right there that's all i need okay i'll get the touchdown and the raiders lead 27-5 look at this run by that man marcus allen i'll tell you the thing that causes it here first is watch lawrence taylor he get right after the handoff he gives him a little limp leg the old right leg marshall he gives him a straight arm he runs through that tackle by that tackle gets a little block here and he gets in the end zone that was quite an effort that's some run that had everything a limp leg a stiff arm a run by a seat [Applause] john three yards deep in the end zone and he wisely says i won't bring it out next saturday don't forget again florida state against florida florida state has greg allen florida has wayne peace that's football [Applause] after that is basketball and one of the great rivalries bobby knights indiana hoosiers meet the powerful kentucky wildcats and that's always a real battle [Music] raiders leading 27 to 5. melody went in motion and bruner goes back to throw fires up the middle earnest gray has it at the 40. rod martin back there close to him along with jeff barnes but gray has four catches for 118 yards and ernest gray is moving in on the all-time number of receptions for a giant in a season record held by an old friend of mine dale schofner [Music] bob nelson made a stop i'll tell you know if bruner can get time he can throw the ball in the middle because he does have that height and he can he can see and find those receivers in the middle sometimes he just doesn't get time and he doesn't throw the running patterns as well as he does the zone type pattern he's got a strong arm [Applause] an inch [Music] raiders leading 27 to 5. perfect perfect afternoon [Applause] weather-wise [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and gets his first down at about the 42-10 yard game john mistler let's go now to brett rossberger in new york for an update on another nfl score i know you'd like to keep up on the kickers around the league and here is john stenerod with a milestone he has now moved to within two of the great george blanda his 333rd career field goal the packers are still beating atlanta 34-24 let's go back to pack sometimes those kickers are tough to keep up with here's luna back to throw and going deep has a man touchdown byron williams turning on the after burner and bruner putting the ball right there from 43 yards away behind lester hayes you know bill parcells was saying yesterday he said somewhere he said we want to take a shot on lester hayes because he gets a little sloppy there now watch him lester's up there tight man-to-man williams gets by right there he hasn't beaten all the way now this is a heck of a throw here right watch right out in front over his head where there's no way that the coroner can get to it the only guy that can catch that is william heck of a throw and williams showed you why he's out there why he's playing with that great speed from texas arlington [Applause] [Music] has had a problem in recent weeks with cramps that may be what that is but just again the giant lion has been doing a pretty good job of pass protection there it was against an all-out blitz and that's why it was man-to-man out here in the corner didn't hit anybody it must be clean 27-12 the raiders over the giants pat somerow john madden and ali hachi chic set to kick off greg pruitt will you montgomery back deep there is meat that touchdown by byron williams by the way was his first ever in the nfl next sunday by the way in the nfl it begins with the nfl today st louis at new york these are the early games rams at philadelphia atlanta at washington later on dallas at seattle tampa bay against the san francisco 49ers at candlestick bucket still a quarterback [Music] [Applause] with two or three exceptions team plunkett being one raiders have a very young team well they do that's one thing that the raiders have always found they've always kept bringing youth in then as the old retire the middle age become the old the young become the middle age and you keep putting young players into your team looks the branch first then looks out to the right to clearly montgomery who is now one of the wide receivers then overthrew him bill parcells looking on a tough year for him [Music] [Applause] another personal illness in his family his mother and his father [Music] coming out of training camp they were a pretty good team and then you know they didn't have a lot of depth and then once they started to lose those players it was just it's just like snowballed on them on third down bucket back to throw [Music] looking up field what was that field incomplete not christensen saying hey i was wide open but nobody saw him [Music] see what happened with lawrence taylor [Applause] that's what the fans were booing about they thought that it should have been a roughing the passer [Applause] todd christensen number 46 the tight end snaps for punts and here's ray guy perhaps the best ever although he hasn't caught one today he's about to do [Music] [Applause] almost black guy just did get it off and it's a short kick giants really put the pressure on guy just barely got that one away marion came rolling in i think that ball may have been tipped it sounded like it was tipped let's see if he did get it it's quite up there that's the place to hit it i don't know i couldn't see there but it sounded like he kept it did sound like it sounded like two quick sounds let's see if we can see it here he's gonna come from ray guy's left [Music] he must have gotten a piece of it it sure looked like it it wasn't a typical guy effort but the giants take over at midfield [Music] [Applause] lawrence taylor getting a little breather on the other sideline [Music] hi mom my dad how you doing ernest gray flanks out wide to the right giants take over at midfield fire and williams out wide to the left plenty of time left he went the wrong way to block that's the fourth attack dave stahls and bill paquel came roaring on top of brenner what happened here bruner was trying to throw deep but the raiders double covered both of his outside receivers you see him look he's looking right he's looking right double coverage over there by the time he tries to come back to the left there's about three black jerseys on top of him yeah watch here's part of a double coverage ernest gray falls down right there if you see the double coverage that's where he was looking so it's second down and long now back to throw has time overthrows ernest gray the intended receiver was second and 19 so now it'll bring up third and 19. for an nfl update let's take you back to brent mussberger in new york [Applause] we've got one brewing down in atlanta william andrews slams in now for his third touchdown of the game for the falcons they only trail the packers now by three points there is nine minutes to go in atlanta we'll keep you up to date back to pat and josh [Music] here at the los angeles coliseum it's third and 19 for the giants fourth quarter 27-12 to score [Applause] winner they're saying he was in the grass he got away momentarily greg townsend and how along back there quickly and a giants will have to punt you know what happened on that play it looked like the right side of the line didn't even go out now watch the right side of the giant offensive line maybe the ball will snap too soon but watch them they're still in their stance the ball's already been snapped i watch them the tackle and the guard is still understand [Music] that was a mix-up on the snap count that shouldn't happen when you play in the 13th game of the year good kick by jennings cases threw it all the way back to his 22 yard line no place to go and greg pruitt gets out of bounds pete shaw shoved him out greg townsend was already in the backfield before gordon king ever thought the ball had been snapped no he was still there in his stance and everything was happening behind him kansas city 35 seattle 31 third quarter san diego has moved further in front of denver 28-7. and iran's lead buffalo 24-14 third quarter the first place they could be the cinderella team this year you know it could be [Applause] marcus allen left side for just a couple yards no more [Applause] harry carson [Music] [Applause] talking to his coaches up in the press [Music] box [Applause] [Music] [Applause] second down eight yards to go raiders from their own thirty leading 27-12 plunkett back to throw destro quick barnwell intended receiver no dokey williams was quite a story he was a long jumper at ucla they say he has tremendous leg strength leaping ability great speed of course well he only caught eight passes but four of them were for touchdowns and all the scouts really didn't think that he had good hands but when a trackman plays football the thing that he misses is spring football and he never really gets the basics down if you just have to take a chance on that i hope that you can develop them that's what the raiders have done and it seems that they've been successful we montgomery on a reverse swings around the corner andy him grabbed him by the jersey and he flung him to the ground a lot of talking down there in that sideline isn't there you guys yelling at each other [Applause] well they tried to break that one and that didn't work the giant defense played that well so the raiders plucket comes to the sideline and ray guy back into the game 34.8 his average far below what he was normally achieved pete shaw back deep for the giants [Music] i almost [Music] was the man who put the pressure on 40-yard punt [Music] guy looking at what happened to my protection because the last two one of them was tipped that one was very nearly blocked [Music] [Applause] well you're not very happy with the way things would go but took it out on that chin strap didn't it [Music] 18-yard pickup that was a heck of a catch if he did mike davis the defender and that's throwing the ball into the teeth of the zone watch this the zone there's no man-to-man it's all playing area here unless there's two in front of him two behind him he catches it right in the middle of that group but there was a penalty on the play so it's not going to count anyway that's tough when you make that kind of effort and then there's a penalty that's a good catch offense number 60 holy brad benson [Music] [Applause] those are the types of passes you can't throw an awful lot of those because if you throw three one of them will be coming back at you you have to make the pack you'll also lose one of your wide receivers well you could lose an injury and you could lose their friendship also [Music] [Applause] you know the same thing happened that happened on that play earlier dave stalls was in there he's a nose tackle watch him right here he's the guy right here 61 on the right he's making a pass rush move look he's rushing like it's a pass play he gets in there seeing he makes the first play there and then football gets away from him and pickell makes a tackle but stahls called that closet i get into [Applause] penetration [Music] [Applause] took a pretty good hit now he's holding his ankle and he's limping i think he got kicked right on the ankle calling for help there's another giant down on the other side of the field watch it we'll see the pressure coming from bruner's right and he gets leg whip you see townsend goes down right there now watch his left leg i think that's where bruno got kicked right there you see that he got kicked right on the ankle but then there's another giant down also that's malcolm scott up the field that's malcolm scott right there he seems to be regaining whatever was lost greg townsend is [Music] maybe the one who fell on broomer's ankle and it seems to be loosening up or warming a little bit that's jeff rutledge in the meantime warming up his arm [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ex-ram quarterback [Applause] if we can see greg townsend now he comes from the left-hand side of the screen 93. watches down there he goes for everything then the penalty is 10 yards from the spot of the foul it didn't make it to the line of scoring so we move in another yard so it makes it to the line of storage and it's first down [Applause] [Music] it appears that bruner is going to stay in the game there is an exciting game by the way going on green bay atlanta and the conclusion of this one we'll be switching you to that one headings comes out wide to the left i am remaining here just under five minutes back to throw townsend penalty markers down again and bruner hit by townsend [Music] [Applause] greg townsend is a rookie that you talked about earlier that many teams thought was too small to play this game he's six three 240 pounds but he's a natural password into the face mask refused second down 72 is gordon king he was the guy that was trying to block townsend not only didn't get him blocked you also had a penalty [Applause] but some guys just have a natural match you know getting that shoulder pad up underneath the offensive guy's shoulder pad getting him pushed and turned you see him right here see how he has that left arm underneath now you can see king's left arm is on his face mask he just pushed him to the head hansen would remind you of fred dean about that same size but so very quick bruner across the middle of the melody melody outside the 15s who got the 16 lester hayes on the stop third down in about these are the type of situations that defensive linemen love you know they're ahead 27 to 12 they're in the fourth quarter they have to pass and they just tee off on every play green bay 34 atlanta 31 but our information is that atlanta is at the green bay 30 and driving we'll be sending you there after this one's over [Applause] [Music] defender [Music] hayes has helped to the inside so he's going to the outside but grade just hooks in front of him that ball is thrown the only place that could be thrown and caught low and back ernest grace caught five passes for 134 yards today raiders lead it 27-12 clock running with three minutes 25 seconds left to play melody again swings in motion lunar backpedal mcelroy it for the raiders in giant territory at their 48th second interception of the day by the raiders he's been taking that big rush and they've been on there all the time you know pushing pushing pushing him all day and then he just throws this one he had to move a little see it gets up in the air on him it's high but it was single coverage anyway mcelroy was a free safety just sitting back in the middle let's just watch this rush that scott bruner's been seeing all day he's like he's been getting pushed back you know and he has a tough time stepping up stahls and long and pounds and all back there close to it stop by brian kelly for an update let's go back to new york in an update and brent busberger here is the moment that gave the falcons a job it was a punt by the green bay packers and it is white shoes johnson coming right up the middle he's gonna get 38 yards on the play and now the falcons have advanced the ball down to the green bay seven yard line we'll keep you up to date back now to patton john here at the los angeles coliseum that's lawrence taylor an obvious pain raiders leading the giants 27 to 12. [Applause] [Music] hate to see anybody get hurt you hate to see a man who plays the game like he does in any kind of thing it looks like he's trying to stretch something out down to 246 which is the official time now it looks okay [Applause] two minutes 46 seconds left to play officially here [Music] really tell what happened something happened to his back see it's something tightened up on him because he's trying to get stretched out loosened up another final scores of earlier today pairs with a big win over san francisco 13-3 second down in about seven market gives to kenny king nothing doing jerome sally in honor of marshall other scores tampa bay beat houston 33-24 for their second win of the year it gets overwhelmed new england 26-3 kansas city leading seattle 35-31 fourth quarter san diego now comfortably over denver 31-7 and the rams 24 buffalo 17. lawrence taylor by the way is back in the game that's big game green bay 34 atlanta 31 but as brent mussberger told you just a second ago last we heard atlanta was at the green bay seven the conclusion of that exciting contest coming up billy white shoes johnson made another big play he's having quite a year isn't he disney though remember we saw him against the jets almost single-handedly won that game then last week of course that controversial touchdown that he scored on the last play of the game don't forget next week in the nfl the early ones st louis at the giants rams at philadelphia atlanta at washington and then later in the day dallas at seattle tampa bay against the 49ers at candlestick getting down to where every game means something to those who are still alive but how about dallas and washington so everywhere you go they can't wait for that one you know that's the one everyone says who do you think is the best team and every other time i give an answer i say washington and dallas everybody says you're gonna be there yes we will he got rid of it just barely got rid of it for his tight end todd christensen yeah market's been hit a few times today too well it was hit by the corner that time terry jackson came from his backside the giants want to get the ball back they don't watch it from the left-hand side of the screen number 24 terry jackson see canard move over that frees jackson up to come from this side watch him right there there's terry jackson the right corner hitting plunkett just as he throws the ball look at 19 out of 33 for 243 yards no interceptions two touchdowns and for the second week in a row no sacks grey guy back to kicks with a lot of people up front and pete shaw back by himself hawkins taking a long time hangs it high sure will field it at v8 he's your hit and the 15. kenny hill down to make the stop two two-minute warning 34-yard punt 7-yard return [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] at the los angeles coliseum 27-12 the raiders over the giants with a minute 56 left to play to bring you and keep you up to date green bay 34 atlanta 34. nick lucker just hit a 22-yard field goal with 215 left to play that one could be headed for overtime [Applause] [Music] to find out just exactly what happened here's with musburger again that it was exactly what you said but i'll tell you what cost them a scoring opportunity the right offensive tackle was offside and when the falcons were bounced back they had to settle for the 22-yard field goal
