the lineup for today is leading off in playing second base Steve sax batting second and playing first base is Greg Brock batting in the third position in playing left field Dusty Baker hitting fourth and playing third base pete Guerrera batting in the fifth spot and playing centerfield kenny Landro batting sixth and playing right field Mike Marshall batting seventh and playing shortstop to veteran to Dean Billy Russell batting in the eighth spot and doing the catching Jack pimple and a pitcher for today the right-handed fireballer Bobby Welsh thank you here's the way the Phillies will line up on defense Matthews remains in left field they give up some defense with grouse in centerfield replacing Maddux and in right fielders lafay but those two fellas are in there because of their bat Mike Schmidt will be a third base - hey Suzanne he'll be a little more sure of himself with the artificial surface he's a shortstop Jill Morgan will be at second base Petros is at first base Bo Diaz is the catcher and Charlie Hudson is the pitcher the Philadelphia Phillies taking the field here at veteran's stadium and again we point out two things first of all it is not a full house and secondly the delay of game it will take place a couple of minutes from now however it was originally to start sometime after 3 p.m. but we had an unfortunate tragedy nearby the ballpark when an oil tanker truck turned over as we explained at the start of the show Charlie Hudson he's a kid who is Owen too in fact he made his major-league debut the end of May against the Dodgers and the Dodgers beat him in Dodger Stadium four to one he had somewhat of a rollercoaster year even though he's eight Nate give you an idea his first 10 starts he won two and lost three then the end of July through the first week in August he was red-hot he won five straight and then from August 13th to the end of the season he won only one game in 11 starts he went one in five she put it all together and you wind up eight and eight probably his best game on the 20th of July at a no-hitter with one out in the ninth inning and Houston's Craig Reynolds blooped a single to Center he finished with a three hitter 10 to 3 and he took the win and basically he is a simple Orthodox pitcher until that is your watched him throw his curveball but his fastball is his best pitch he throws a cut fastball he has two or three variations according to his pitching coach Claude Osteen the cut fastball is just that he throws it a bit off-center and hopefully in this game we'll show you exactly what they mean when they talk about a cut fastball he throws it very hard and it'll be a pitch it'll eat you up if he gets it in the right spot I think that cut fastball really started with Johnny Sain and I think mud can't grant got the most publicity when he was winning because that's what he was drawn this kid what they talk about more than anything though I think then is his temperament they say he'll have the butterflies but they'll not affect his arm and he's his coach says he can smile he'll lose the game and he'll feel badly but he can leave it here and come back the next day so here we go 24-year old Charlie Hudson will be pitching to Steve sax Greg Brock and Dusty Baker a year ago Hudson was in his home in Dallas watching the championship series on TV in fact he said I didn't expect to reach the big leagues until 1984 and here he is going up against sacks sacks in his sophomore year at a big year and so far he has enjoyed a reasonably good championship series 3 for 7 with the bat although you remember in the first game after a base hit he was picked off at first base MP he already said if I get on I'm going those sacks opening it up here to 81 during the regular year and of course he had 56 stolen bases that's ball one finding it very difficult to get into the stadium so we are far from a sellout right to Steve sax and you can see the empty seats although many of the tickets have been sold for those seats it's extremely difficult to get here one of the main arteries completely blocked until at least 10 p.m. tonight I fly into shallow right-center field coming in and calling all the way as lafha it looks like at least at the start of the game we're going to have one of those shadows sunlight game I started to just bring that up it's not so much the shadows as it is the reflection tube in because you can see the latticework across the mound that's going to be distracting but when it gets beyond and everybody's initiate it will help some but it's looking out the center field a reflection that's what really makes it a problem you know every now and then a manager has to go with a hunch and Lasorda's hunch is that this youngster Greg Brock will do something rather dramatic he's over five in the league championship series remember he had 20 home runs during the regular year with 66 runs batted in and he fouls that back the count all at one it's a high sky today so these out feelers and infielders on the pop fly they might have some problem because they don't have those little white clouds or the lame toes that they talked about helping you out as an idea that sky it's about as high as it can get on one account a Greg Bryan good fastball lifted foul a third Mike Schmidt fighting the Sun now goes into the shade leans in did he come up with it or not yes [Applause] and said give it to me bought too hard to get it [Applause] here's another look at that play and you can see Mike fighting his son looking to see exactly where he was he knows he has to reach in I watch the fan try to make the catch Mike with the club makes it and they're showing it on the big scoreboard on his center field now he'll visit with him and he gives him the ball he the fan has a perfect right to that ball because it's in the stands he did not reach on to the Plainville you would think with the home crowd he would help his Blair but he wanted that souvenir and he did end up with it but he does have a right to it well in the box seat is just beyond the Dodger dugout far away like Delaware when two out of the first inning here's Dusty Baker Baker 1 for 7 in the League Championship Series I'll tell you where was an experienced man was to go there as a cardinal player and efforts feel and reach in there hey lucky to come back with you and your club was taught bottom on a count of eight ball 2 2 & 1 game 3 of the National League Championship Series between the Phillies in the Dodger contrary to the writers east and west meet at least in baseball my slicing flyball derive lafay digging still digging still come in and can't get all bouncing up into the seats for the ground rule double there's a great example of what the ball will do when it hits that artificial surface once he missed it the thing gives it a try now watch the bounce on his fall I mean it just went straight up at into the seats with the ground rule double said you can see the infielders playing back and outfielders have to be careful of the ball when it hits that surface and it probably deprived Dusty Baker of the additional base because with lepay on his numbers he figured to go to third on that ball except it bounced into the stand so now let's see Pedro Guerrero 1 for 5 remember the two-run triple the other night he's also been on base three times by walking twice and hit by a pitch he slices one high twisting down the right-field line and foul Brown and back into the seats out of play Petros in pursuit oh and one the count well if you've been thinking about it first base is open to you why'd Annette strike zone boy and make him chase the bad ball Hudson came right in weather as if to say hey I got good enough stuff to get him and of course again we point out as we did Pedro has land row hitting back of him today and the other night he does in the first game when Carlton was pitching he had the rookie Marshall Marrero does not walk very much yet only three intentional walks in 1980 and 81 and of course now they really handle him with care the last two years he's had 28 intentional ward and then of course there's that category the intentional or the unintentional intentional walk but they just won't give you two strike one and one and it was also out of the strike zone that Guerrero is looking and knock him that run he knows how important it is that put two crooked numbers on the scoreboard first and that was not a strike but he wasn't about to be that particular one and two the count of Pedro Guerrero Dusty Baker with a ground-rule double at second two out in the first inning no score so pull up a chair and spend part of the afternoon with [Music] 1 & 2 [Music] [Applause] Dusty Baker at SEC half an inning the Dodgers no runs one hit a man left and the Philadelphia Phillies coming up Oregon rose and Schmidt [Music] here's the Philadelphia Philly lineup Joe Morgan leading off at second base followed by his buddy Pete Rose at first base and the big guy Mike Schmidt at third jollof a will be in the cleanup spot in right field followed by Gary Matthews in left field Greg Gross with his left-handed bat replacing Gary Maddox in centerfield Bo Diaz will be the catcher Avon Dee hey soos the shortstop and Charlie Hudson on the mound the pitcher going head-to-head against that lineup is Bob Welch he has won an O in the playoffs his playoff victory came here in 1978 he went four and a third innings allowed only two hits and beat the bills at Veterans Stadium he is one an O against Philadelphia this year and what did he have to work for it it was a one-hit wonder nothing victory over Steve Carlton his best game would be that beam they only hit by Vaughn Hey the defense is what you've been used to Baker Landro and Marshall in the outfield he'll be Guerrero at third Russell at Short Sachs the second baseman Brock's at first Jack pimple is behind the plate and Bob Welch on the mound and that son has worked its way the words right in the big guys eyes and you can see the shadow is first baseman who tried to learn the position in spring training here comes the ball right Georgia Joe doesn't really drive that ball he hit it well and Marshall fighting my skies once he catches it it's almost like I want to sit down and take an inventory here it's not your classic way to catch it but there is one out and of course for the other night he was fooled by a Morgan 5 wall and had to wind up diving for it here's Petros one rose in game two had his 15 game heavy in the LCS snap by Fernando and Eden viewer he's one for seven is a walk and he has stolen base it was a classic steal those of us who saw it will never forget it he stole without a play so the wily rose Joe Morgan was talking about maybe having a meeting before today's game with just the players that talk about how the Dodgers are previous two games because they have changed their pitching and some of the defense that they used all year there's a 2-1 pitch and rose grounds into third Guerrero stays with it and gets him a tag by Brock and you see Rose he wasn't about to be tagged he's playing for keeps you know try and knock that ball out of Brock's hands tell you that's one reason why he gets booed but he never gets booed in a white uniform he doesn't give up he never loses the game he just runs out of time watching hustle down there and whoops you get that glove there and I'm gonna knock it out away and that's the way you played this game you don't buy dance tickets when you go to first base you want to be a base runner where is Mike Schmidt if ever the home run of course that Steve Carlton made stand-up he takes his fight he is 3 for seven in the series the home run and one RBI interestingly enough Mike Schmidt has been carrying Thunder in that bat now for the last 10 years he's averaged about 37 home runs a year this is a favorite hitters ballpark right they talk about Atlanta being a launching pad but most of the hitters you talk to love this ballpark 3:30 down the lines 371 up the alleys 408 to Center great hitting background and the ball flies out of here when the weather's warm and one other thing that ball players the hitters like there's not a whole lot of foul territory that ball usually ends up in a stage which may mean 10 15 extra swings and sitting down the lines forget it once it gets out there as you see the indentation because like I said if you run out of room immediately ballplayers love that because it's extra swings is when you get that that Airport feeling that it's bad oh and to the Mike Schmidt two down first Jenny we are just warming up first inning no score Bob Welsh and Charlie Hudson [Music] high flyball here comes Marshall to fight the glare again and he stand with it he's put excitement back into flyball he's done a great job considering he's really a first baseman so the Phillies are out in order and at the end of an inning the Dodgers nothing and the Phillies nothing happened on McDuff of the Goodyear blimp America a big dove a native of anzan Texas a ten year veteran and one of only 20 blimp pilots in the world giving us those bird's-eye view shots of Veterans Stadium down on the ground Kenny Landro Mike Marshall and Bill Russell Landro is 2 for 6 with an intentional walk hits it to right-center coming up for it is gross to make the game good play by Greg the great grouse got a jump on it and stayed with it the bow is just starting to sink and the batter will be Mike Marshall Marshall is over eight struck out twice in the League Championship Series and in 42 at-bats during the regular year he struck out 19 times against the film she's that kind of a young hitter at 284 at 17 home runs and 65 RBIs no he's in a hole Owen too Tommy Lasorda in a most important game threes from nearby Norristown it's almost like coming home I like the way this young Hudson has walked out there and said hey you're going to have to beat me because he's coming right at him the proof being what he did the Guerrero after Baker a double and what he has just done to Marshall Andrew hits the first pitch and on three pitches he strikes out Marshall well I love the way went after Guerrero there's Russell right Russell with a short-stroke he's the veteran of the ball club and he is 3 for 6 with a skull and bass for Hudson his most strikeouts in the game nine and he had a three hitter against Houston Branch we have a microphone pretty close but you can hear that ball pop them up here there's a one hopper at Rose but stays with Charlie Hutchins that's the Dodgers down one two and strikeout along the way he desired the last four in a row since the live wall double by Dusty Baker and at the end of an inning and a ham and Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia the Dodgers nothing and the bills nothing for the second inning no score and the ball game just a moment ago pitching coach Ron perranoski and trainer Paul Padilla the via the inventor of the mr. Potatohead award you've heard so much about perranoski didn't like the way Bob Wilson is warming up Welch had to leave starts on September the 19th and on the 24th because of a sore hip he had no trouble in his most recent start on the 29th evidently he Perry didn't like the way he was loosening up even out to talk to them and they tell me then that he's one of those pitchers who will not tell you if an injury I mean beforehand that has to be a pretty serious thing right now and this has been a year of injury for him as he sets in to go ahead to head with jollof a lafha had one pinch-hitting appearance the other night and struck out but Welch had a bad elbow in the spring suffered a chip fracture in August when he was hit by New York's Walt Terrell and then lately the bad hip Juan de la Fey who would believe it but it has turned out that jollof a and $6 Cano would be hitting cleanup for the Phil's in the League Championship Series Joe a very versatile ballplayer he can play left field right field he can and if you really need him he'll also go behind the plate and he has an exceptional throwing arm he ranked right up there with Andre Dawson one one did you Olaf a that Gary Matthews and Greg gross [Applause] by twisting foul the seats and this was way back in and out of play when you watch that Welles pitch you can see why he impresses you he's a big guy to begin with and all those big guys always give me that little extra and then with his delivery I can't help but think I was reading some notes last night Roger Angell who could really put the words together says it well throws with an explosive elegance as it is elegant to watch right and that's drilled with explosive elegance to deep center hands it go away [Applause] [Music] and look at Kenny still fighting that glare the shades were down but he had to use his glove to catch the ball not for shade this is one of the reasons that both gross and the fair in the lineup with Landro able to haul this went down he battled it all away and he wasn't sure even after he caught it keep in mind is not just a reflection but there are no clouds up there and ball players really need some help with those clouds because when you run after a while those little floater those dark spots are all over the place and sometimes you pick on a floater and that ball will go right over your head it's a tough eye sky interesting chain of events is Gary Matthews steps in ball 1 perranoski didn't like the way Wells warmed up and the first hitter takes Landro 405 feet to hold it in Matthews to parade a home run against Fernando RBI sergeants they call him Gary Matthews he never had less than 58 RBIs in his major league career but this year he only had fifty one reason the Phills had some troubles looked like he might have been trying to go to right field and the count 2 & 1 two balls one strike a Gary Matthews one out of the second inning no score good to so Welsh in Hudson in Game three me the managers saying much about Game four I'm gonna wait till this one's over the post plan I've got a secret masked ball just off the corner ball three you take a ball like that it's not because you've got a great eye you're a great hitter it just happened to be a ball three and two to Gary Matthews [Applause] [Music] a couple of elements we talked about the hi sky what about the artificial surface we asked Bill Russell play a little deeper step or two deeper simply because it's going to be long the sun's out the ball is going to get to me a lot quicker because they asked her if is holding the heat in the consequent again the ball is going to be a bounce here because of that heat holding it into the astroturf Gary Matthews at first with one out in the bottom of the second inning no score indication of what kind of weather we have here in October in Philadelphia when Bill Russell is talking about the heat in the astroturf it is a magnificent day here is great gross grounded out and walk he walked remember he inherited a - and old count and boy when you hit 300 and they give you a - no count you are really playing with house money rowspan at 3:02 during the regular year Matthews at first with 13 stolen bases OSE they put a play on Dodgers really do not expecting to pull that ball in fact Dusty Baker in left field was playing him as if he were a right-handed pull hitter and land row is in left-center gross ever hits the ball let's say between Steve sax and second base if it hits the rug it'll scurry to the wall LoZ right most walks for Bob Welch in a game this year five he did that for time and his most strikeouts served himself with his Bob Welch thrown over the first base as much as he does sometimes Braun says he throws over so much he loses concentration on the banner because he's bearing down so much on that base runner there's a fine line there for the young pitcher [Applause] restlessly in the Dodger dugout and in the bullpen I don't think they like what they see and I just read Lasorda's lips and the last part of was get him out of here there was [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and Romania yes [Applause] there is pain you who might or might not have been the starting pitcher at first one wasn't Lasorda was hollering something about that first one wasn't he's talked about the visits to the mound because if you go out there twice the same in he's gone he wanted to make sure that that's the first visit that perranoski is making because what they're going to do I'm sure is try to buy some time and not McSherry is going on to make sure that Padilla and Welsh are talking about it as far as a possibility of an injury the two trips out there and you're gone and that's why this order was making sure now perranoski goes out there and they're concerned about welsh it looks like he is going to be gone yeah he evidently that hit must be bothering him and he's gone when I saw the sort I could read his lips saying get him the dash out of there and there he goes and so looking at Lasorda all these years I read him pretty well yes you do he's pretty upset Finn I just wonder if it is an injury at all and Alejandro Pena will be called in now how many pitches about did Welsh make we can check in other words I'm thinking about him coming back tomorrow but he is hot he's gone he's not staying around for any talk he made 13 in the first and we'll count the ones in his second in here he cut to come back if he win ok Pina says he's ready I'm gonna find out if he really is Gary Matthews at second Greg Brody's first one out in the second inning bo Diaz over 6 in the series coming out and if you were the hitter you'd say well I'm going to look for a fastball right here look at all this he wants to get ahead of me with all that's going on here just want to throw a strike apparently getting a monumental break when Welsh has to come out with a sore hip [Applause] first and second Matthews war is at second grocer walkers at first and Bo Diaz it was a pretty good hit run man among other things NES 15 sixty-four are one out and inning fouled away one-on-one Diaz they tell us Joe really thrives on fast balls as I guess to most hitters right that's what you look for and they say he's a good breaking ball and I think they're like Vikings and Shepherds I hear up on him I never see him 1 and 1 the count abode en [Music] [Applause] - cap 2 & 1 on the message board it says gracias amigos young simple I just wonder if it's the bad hand because he just did not move on that pitch he did not shift at all he tried to backhand the ball and have cost him you got those men on face you got to get that body in front of you because as the young catcher they tell you get your body in front of it if you can catch the ball with your body in front of me you're a great cancer you start reaching out like he did like he's got a pair of pliers in his hand [Applause] you said temple is back except at the corner [Music] [Applause] Philadelphia as Christmas comes to the City of Brotherly Love [Applause] I don't think he was crossed up he just didn't see it he could ride five he was looking fastball he just went off his glove they call it a pass ball and rightly so because he didn't move as you can see on the replay his body didn't move either way he was looking fastball he's just good right file two walks a change of pitcher a wild pitch and a pass ball it is one to nothing in favor [Applause] [Music] ground ball foul just over the head of Greg gross and down the line three and two and this crowd dying to make noise and in doing just that here's what our artificial surface comes into play you play your infield in and your chance is to get one through there are really increased ran to the Diaz with one out [Applause] I gotta tell you that right now was sorted stomach as a hockey game going on in there walks a wild pitch the fastball for a run he has lost in his own words his best pitcher it is one denying Philadelphia in the sack attending was wanted Vonda hey Zeus coming up the azuz one for five in the series but he struck groundball de Guerrero waits for the hop and [Applause] it was look and decided to go to first base he was not going to get the DoublePlay no why he gift-wrapped the run farm now watch the play he gets that ball in good shape he's got him by 20 feet right there because the balloon he's going to get him but it decides I'm going to go to first base and they're not scoring that many runs it's almost like they're playing with suction cups er off-speed like except the game is 75% me and they're playing 33 and a third the batter now is Charlie and Hudson was trying I think among other things Guerrero was victimized by the fear of the he didn't charge that ball if it was grass I think he would have charged and instinctively thrown to the plate but he played it like it was the head of a rattlesnake on one all at once right so the Phillies have gotten three walks a fastball a wild pitch and a groundout for two runs that's a monumental rally in this series well you talk about being marked down to 398 they really wholesale Diaz at second base and Hudson trying to pick him up and fouls it back out of play 1 & 2 2 Charlie Hudson Philadelphia leading two to nothing in the second inning and Bob Welch leaving because of a flare-up of the bursitis in his left hip Knutson had five hits but three RBIs during the regular year waves at it so the Phillies don't do any heading but the you give them to and at the end of to Philadelphia to in the Dodgers nothing we'll be right back after these messages from your local station here's the play the hey Suz hits the ball to Guerrero now Guerrero waits for the artificial surface but it looks like he's going to get grossed by 30 feet but he decides to go to first base I just wondered looked like he might have a little bit of trouble getting on the glove but I still think he could have gotten by 20 feet it's interesting you and I are wondering why did he go and I'm speculating on the astroturf and the fact that he was afraid of the bounce Steve Dan's of NBC said you know maybe he thought there were two outs and when you realize there was such a lengthy pause and he went into the dugout he didn't even stand out on the field while pea was warming up somehow inexplicably perhaps Guerrero thought there were two out maybe I hope he doesn't tell the sort of that no no he won't in English or Spanish he'll keep that quiet well ball Owens has him solitude and nothing leave without really doing very much about it a couple of walks a wild fit you pass ball on the ground the Phillies leading and now it's Jack temple followed by Pena and in sacks bimbeau was born about eight miles from the city of Darby Pennsylvania didn't play in Game one hit the ball very hard in Game two he was robbed to the hit by Mike Schmidt robbed of a hit on a leaping catch by Joe Morgan and managed to get a base hit go 1 for 4 in an RBI he really was raised in Sacramento we want to talk about a one in a million Jacksonville and Dodger catcher Mike Scioscia will both born in the same hospital and Darby Pennsylvania I mean Jetta [Applause] I asked Claude Osteen the pitching coach about this cut finger fastball at his cut fastball well yes he does Joe and he pulls the ball off-center a little bit and gets on top of the ball a hand has to be on top of the ball and the ball literally comes out in an off-center position and has very close philosophy to the fastball and by turning maybe more or less he can get a variation of brakes on that cut fastball and it's very quick and the break is at the end of the pitch which is [Applause] - they and a half a dozen hits during irregular here one of them was a home run in st. Louis he is a free swinger he holds the bat down at the knob and just goes for broke wanted to it's a Jill Werner school of hit him get the ball is where the bat is well he's got his 1hr oh and to and he promptly bangs it to center for a base hit and of course for Hudson that's the ultimate insult not only to give up a base hit to the opposing pitcher but oh and to might have careless he is struck out three go pain you singles and that will bring up Steve sax applied to right in the first inning Billy's to Dodgers nothing top of the third from the vet Veterans Stadium Philadelphia Jax all-4-one with the fly ball Aeneid disdaining the windbreaker on the 7th of October magnificent weather in Philadelphia live wall and that's a graveyard in centerfield for people like sax but Rose puts it away Lasorda and Steve sax would pay each other money every time sax had a ball in the air he had a pay Lasorda and when he hit a ground ball to sorta would give it back to him it was trying to teach him to beat that ball down on the rug and for a fella without power in a leadoff role to hit Clive walls when you playing on artificial surface that is a crime two down and here is Greg Brock who fouled out in the first inning Lasorda was doing some agonizing whether to play Rick Monday or Brett Prok the other day he chose Brock he again elected Brock today he still has a hunch that Brock's gonna do sent the big boy whoa you usually would not associate the word patience with Lasorda but in the case of Brock and Marshall he has shown great patience there's Rick Monday the veteran who of course had the key homerun in the LCS two years ago against Montreal and Steve Rogers to get the Dodgers into the World Series and there's the drive to write lafay is right there no runs one hit a single by Alejandro Pena and one man left the dodges have left two at the end of two and a half inning the Phillies to the Dodgers nothing with Messrs Morgan Rosen Schmidt coming up blue sky being the Dodgers 2 to nothing as we go to the bottom of the third inning Joe Morgan followed by Pete Rose and then Mike Schmidt they weren't with us in the second inning Bob Wells was pitching before he even began the inning the Dodgers were distressed over the way he was warming up they allowed him to pitch and Joe love a scent Kenny Landro to the center field fence almost 408 feet away that was an indication that something was wrong when he then walked Mathews and gross and the Dodgers jerked him immediately and we had a report that his left hip had flared up on him Dania came in and warmed up and he wasn't ready nor was his catcher Jack pimple he goes pain you wild pitch and then had a fastball for one run d hey soos at a ground ball to Guerrero inexplicably threw to first instead of going to the plate and with all of it the Phillies picked up two gift run but the third it's Morgan rose and shrimp against Alejandro Pena Morgan flied to ride in the first inning Koller thus far five Wow off to the left in way in the scenes one ball and one strike did yo Morgan because of a tragedy on the school Express an oil tanker truck turned over to reportedly dead and it slowed down and prevented apparently a lot of people from ever getting to the ballpark happened at 11:30 this morning Philadelphia time Joe did a good job of staying alive he was schooled by that pitch and somehow he fought it off that's exactly what he did he pulled it off he didn't have that good Morgan swing it was a breaking ball and took a little bit off of it and you could just see him just hopefully get a piece of it in his paws I could stay alive my point out that there's a white line that the infielders used to set their positions and sacks right now is beyond it usually with the right-handed batter Russell gets beyond that white line the 1 2 pitch at yo Morgan high ball 2 2 2 Joe Morgan we were talking about his credentials well my gosh Rookie of the Year in 65 MVP in 75 and six nine times an all-star five Gold Gloves truly remarkable player let go the old days when we stir we're puttings only shirts they used to call Morgan the guy with a two-button strike zone it's about oli hand you look back at Houston when they had Joe Morgan and Jimmy Wynn and you talk about dynamite coming in small packages and that's fouled back upstairs out of play though it's still three and two yo is five feet seven inches tall but to the pitches in the league he's a lot bigger than that on deck Petros - nothing Philadelphia bottom of the third nobody out they say [Music] [Applause] that's the first the ball as well head rock at first base gives it a leap the way he could get it and Morgan is on and Rose has a gap the shoe throw to induce an error Mike Marshall played the ball calmly and - a strike in the second Little Joe making a big turn at first trying to shake up the rookie right fielder Petros climbs in grounded to third in the first inning is very quick coming over there but he is coming over against the most successful base dealer in National League history his percentage is 81% success the best in the American League Willie Wilson so this is a pretty good fight huge oh he's getting a good lead - he's got that right foot is on the artificial surface as you can see you cut meat that then you'll starve to death he's trying to take the spring out of his legs but you see that Joe is just waiting for the first move and the first move being towards first base and back he goes the other way to do it of course if he comes back feet firs is good hard tags on the thighs another first baseman speck most baserunners today seem to go back with a hand [Music] when you watch pain you pitch the only time he moves quickly is on his move to first everything else is a walk in the park to him - nothing Philadelphia bottom of the third notice that Morgan only has the sliding Club on her right hand because he keeps diving in and tagging to face with the right hand Little Joe stolen 18 out of 20 this year at 40 years old Estella Terry not gon strike on the corner one two feet road well let's see you're leading two to nothing and you have Petros at the plate he have him bunting with Mike Schmidt coming up or was that just a decoy decoy [Music] Joe Morgan at first Rose sacrificed very few times is here just once 75 World Series the big argument with all that hoopla on Sparky started at about tea on his balk move and the very first chance and Morgan got on T not picked him off we had the big ball controversy Joe can read the pitches well all in one and there's the bot in the air and drops untouched though they had Rose Bunny and Nick out now Owen - today working on a two-run lead and Pete doesn't strike out that much he to me be very effective hitter with the infield broken up moving around but they want to add that extra run well you can understand they've only had one run in each game and it took a home run to get that so runs have been at a premium well you'd lose Schmidt that's for sure but you'd have a buffet up there with men on first and second oh and to the count when you look at Morgan getting that lead take a good look at those eyes we've given you a couple shots of him once he zeroes in on Pena he doesn't budge from that view right there one ball and two strikes to Pete Rose Morgan at first nobody out [Music] you know an interesting theory and I remember mr. branch rickey talking about it you cannot tag a runner at first if your tag goes in the bowel ground in other words if Brock makes a sweeping tag and the glove goes into foul territory you can never do the same for a throw from the catcher if you start you tag and background forget it this spot is bright where he's throwing a nice and low [Music] [Applause] go to third and [Applause] there's the reason not managing it on this artificial surface it doesn't not sting that fall but there was a big gap because Brock has to hold Morgan on and more [Applause] three hubs before I guess a.m. Morgan sees it all away Alejandra Pena who has not been effective at all in his last several starts has give up a walk wild pitched and past now gives up back-to-back singles with nobody out in the third the Phillies going to tear it wide open and mike schmidt is the batter with the left hand hitting jollof a on deck and right into Joel Beckwith is throwing in the Dodger bullpen but no make no mistake about it when Welsh left in the the Dodgers were really hurting pretty flied to right in the first inning Opel one today yeah I feel almost straightaway land rose slightly off the mark towards left center but now and Marshall is over a court writer - off-speed breaking ball this obviously a very crucial time at bat for Pena because the Dodgers have to be on her heels after watching the Phillies wholesale those two runs in the second inning and Mike Schmidt has a chance here to light the fuses is blown right out the ballpark the Schmidty up there the count one and one Morgan down the line from third Rose held on by crock at first nobody out [Applause] flyball into very shallow Santaland row coming up on the dead run and the runners are not going to go anywhere not on a pop fly with the centerfielder charging and they made him throw and land row actually made a poor throw he threw it on the fly above rocks head and it was really no need to do that usually a play like that she just run it in but the organ game will fall star and he kind of love it when he did he do it over frogs head but the pimple was right there though with one out in the third inning the batter will be jollof a now remember it was while warming up before the second inning started that the Dodgers showed concern about Welch and in lafha sent Kenny Landro 400 feet or more for his long fly ball and he does it again he picks up an RBI hitting cleanup boy look at the difference versus left-handers in my hand Levay looking at a Bristol for the moment one Matthew rose and Morgan out on the lines at first and third you know with Joe Morgan a third they told you the greatest base stealer percentage-wise and nationally history he might wonder has anybody ever stolen home in a league championship game yup in 1972 and the player was of all people Reggie Jackson that was part of a double steal - no the cow - Jolla pay fastball the track makes the catch panicking his morgan and scurrying back to first his rose [Applause] tell you something the Phillies couldn't work out here yesterday because they painted new lines and they painted defense these Dodger out feelers are going to come up with greenbacks the way these Phillies have been hitting the Dodger pitching is early in the game Paul was well hit as we take another look and there's dusty right up against the warning track and boom there he goes it's the wall Landro did it earlier the couple of singles a pop fly and then the long fly ball for the run and here's Gary Matthews walked in the second inning Matthews walk gross walked and they took Welsh out because it's bad him and in pain you wild pitch Matthews to third and pimples pass ball allowed him to score it's three nothing Philadelphia bottom of the third two out what a noise that made I think that hit our microphone right where it is how are you cleaning out your closet - fibber McGee squads out [Applause] Oh - to Gary Matthews throws a short lead at first held on by Brock but remember he stole a face I mean he stole it without a throw the Dodgers in the fourth inning if you're not keeping score will have Dusty Baker Pedro Guerrero and Kenny land row [Music] wanted to there he goes get him this time he tried to steal it on pain you but this time the Dodgers were ready the Petros is thrown out as Russell visits with Harvey taken on the luck it's kind of a delay steel you'll see the reaction by fifth ball he just broke a bit too soon because v was ready to throw it back to the pitcher but his good arm made up for that little bit of a delay one run two hits nobody left three nothing Philadelphia and the three we're going to the fourth inning at veteran's stadium in Philadelphia and the replica of the Liberty Bell is very much intact atop the upper deck in dead center field will be Dusty Baker Pedro Guerrero and Kenny Landro and the Dodgers are not very much intact they are losing three to nothing and they are without 15 game winner Bob Welch who had to leave with a bad hip Baker double to right fly ball inside the right-field line that kangaroo tup in the seats for the ground rule double and Young Hudson has only made 31 pitches to this point what a story Charlie Hudson a year ago in class Abel trying to give the Philadelphia Phillies an edge to be aims to one in this rubber dusty one for one we're about the last week including these two games Baker is hitting about 440 because he's been bothered with a severely pulled groin muscle and bad knees he had knee surgery last year in there do mine bo Diaz behind the plate Rose Morgan da Susan Schmidt and Matthews gross in lafha back Charlie Hudson two and one ball three isn't something these young pitchers what a job a young body ger did last night for Baltimore 14 strikeouts and I mean say what you want he was really spotting that ball and you can take your radar guns you know what you can do with in this bottom like that I love bata cos quote after the game he said did I have 14 strikeouts no wonder my arm was tired he pitched a dandy 3 & 2 debate baker guerrero Landro here in the fourth inning Phillies three runs two hits Dodgers no runs two hits the base on balls so important today there's a line drive in a left center and that will fall for the head Mathews making careful it will not kangaroo over his head and the batter will be Pedro Guerrero so Guerrero already figuring prominently in the game he came up with Baker in scoring position and two out in the first inning and Charlie Hudson went right after him and struck him out and then it was Guerrero instead of throwing home to get a cinch out of gross who threw the first allowing Philadelphia's second run to score so he hasn't done anything and yet again he has right get a big year against the Phils with 11 RBIs she had a big year period he has just one hit in the championship series that was that Blair Dumbledore actually was a triple got by list Donald to run and hit it hard one ball and one strike Charlie Hudson out of Ennis Texas and Dusty Baker held on my feet Road you can see what the three-run lead does boy it makes you play station the station get the first on a hit get the second get the third can't break it open one ball one strike check swing foul the count 1 & 2 you know what I would imagine has to be very tough in the dugout the human reaction in the second inning first losing well then the walks and the wild pitch and the fastball and then a mistaken third I'm sure you have to fight that you can reaction although it's not our day to have to fight it you better have somebody and it's a little bit of a cheerleader that you believe in it does something in there 1 & 2 the count Guerrero of course I guess the best cheerleader is somebody to come up and get you back in the ball game with a swing you got just the start of the fourth inning the Phillies leading three nothing back a Charlie Hudson wanted to warp speed and a high flyball to left field Matthews will make the catch however Ferraro hit under it he just hid under a my watch speed pitch and he thought he hit it out they just got under it Guerrero walking back disappointed and in disgust Joe Morgan did not throw to fall the mark and he's to Hudson he's out there telling them something I'm sure that one of the things he's telling them is hey those runs don't come that easy and if you're gonna get feet don't you be getting beat on that big lollipop that balloon you just so you can feed on some good stuff boy that's what it was it was a lollipop and of course that's probably maddening if you're the hitter I mean you've got one it looked like a basketball and you pop it out hey that's the candid you call room service far here's land row for one Landro lined out to Center in the second inning any OPA wanna hit a deck Greg Rose he has 17 home runs a career-high this year all 17 Riggins layin one ball one strike and one out in the fourth inning Philadelphia 3 and Los Angeles nothing [Music] Baker who's single he's two for two at first and Hudson eyeballing over [Music] and that's on the hands of how they might read trying to run it down he's dead [Applause] so he made a bad pitch to the rare oh and away with it and he made a very good pitch on land row as he jammed him and the batter is Mike marshal Marshall struck out in the second inning over nine and Lasorda has been trying to not motivate but to loosen up Brock and Marshall he feels that they are tighter than drums and he keeps pointing out hey look at Rose and Morgan they're not doing anything for the kids are evidently doing what kids do trying too hard he got him on three pitches the last time the person was a fastball this was a fastball and he went for it I mean he's up there he's anxious to hit it's pretty obvious talking to Rick Monday that's one of the things he said about Brock he said he's got to quit fighting himself he's gonna enjoyed it a little bit more but that's very difficult strike one fit walk speed and a high fly ball on the field that goes Matthews away back gets gone and he got burned on the off-speed pitch I'm watching Morgan and Morgan at second base got his hands on his hips I I guarantee that's what he said and now he's got himself a one-run ball game and that's the one of the things that you talked about here comes Joe he wants to talk to him again there's your cheerleader right there yeah here was out of the balloon they just blew it back up for him interestingly the Dodgers have led the National League in a home for look at Morgan saying I thought I told you to take that changeup and lose it I don't think he telling to loses it told him where to put it there it is and he really hit it there's no doubt about this one and look at the difference in that bull pen mark pressing needn't cure and the ball comes back orel hershiser the rookie relief pitcher winds up fielding it in the Dodger bullpen and so with one swing the Dodgers are back in the game no they've led the National League in home runs six of the last seven years led this year you always think of their pitching I chopped it a little Joe and he's going to have to hurry and he got him good play for the Dodgers in the fourth inning Charlie Hudson got away with a changeup to Guerrero but he got burned on a change to Marshall and at the end of three and a half innings Philadelphia 3 and the Dodgers to their Sattar City the heart of Philadelphia and the famous Ben Franklin Bridge and there is suddenly a bridge in the gap here in the fourth inning where it had been three to nothing Philadelphia it's now three to two Gary Matthews Bret gross and Bo Diaz and Joe I gotta ask you something in between pitches as paint you're working on Matthews for one it's enough for a kid to make a mistake and get away with it and then to be reminded by Joe Morgan but how about Bodie as Paulin for the pit well I have to assume that Hudson did it on his own I'm not gonna flame to catch it but I do want to go one step farther with that surprised that Diaz didn't go out himself after Guerrero and said hey if you're gonna throw that thing you bounce it up there don't be throwing it up in his eyes and until you can ask the question to be call it they change up on his own he's got the ball so you have to put some of the blame on him but you gotta hang some of the donkey on Diaz to being consoled said he just to the right of him is John Denny and I build adelphia Doug might be the shy young winner the county Gary Matthews and it was already walk one giving up a wild pitch and two hits in a row Reno to Gary Matthews fastball down the pipe Raylan till he's three runs two hits the Dodgers two runs four hits and were in the fourth inning fastball nikka going back and watching it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] home run is more than just a home run and when Gary hit it he knew it he's going to watch it and he lovely trip but he knows it's out of the ballpark the reason I says more than a home run because with Marshall some of the air is back in the balloon and this is when you want your picture to come out there and really slam the door and say okay we're back in this game but Matthew says all no and he comes back with that Fulmer and the momentum is on the first base side again there's Greg gross for a strike and of course McGarry Matthews that's his second home run in League Championship Series is one the other night against Valenzuela Rick Honeycutt in the Dodger bullpen pain is due to bat second when the Dodgers hit at the fifth and he has not been impressive at all jump out to a 3 nothing lead the Dodgers close to three two and a Matthews opening up again two for two [Music] so grossss on the off-speed pitch foul tips at temple holds on to it and he strikes out and then I think one of the new terms in sports is the unanswered points of the only answer touchdown but I think in baseball it goes beyond just on the answering because when you come back like the Dodgers did you're looking for your pitcher to really write the other club a message and in matthew's there's no way I'm going to answer you with this and boom there it is Zachary begins to loosen up so Pat Zachry the skinny right-hander who looks like he came here on a raft issue he's really suffered one ball no strikes for to nobody and Lasorda dying in the dugout Warda to film bottom of the fourth wild and he behind three you know and they might let diaz swing 15 home runs during the regular year in a wild pitch her perhaps found a groove one tell you if your pimple you better call his pitch assuming that he's going to swing three at all fouled it back three-in-one account of OD add by the way during the regular year Matthews had ten home run ten and he is it - in a couple of ticks of the clock Korean one the count of Diaz with D hey soos on deck bass ball part of that confuse you with this Phillies club when Mike Schmidt spoke out was Gary Matthews and Mike was very blunt about it he said Matthews want to play everyday Maddox wants to play every day gross and LeFay or part-time players and they're happy and then roll in our plan every day so we don't know what's going on they gotta straighten up here they are here they are indeed leading four to two in the fourth inning - for grounded to third Guerrero throw Doubront two down Nevada will be the shortstop yvonne d hey Suz the ground of the third in the second inning to read the story about that man impersonating the hey-zeus in Hawaii that's the wackiest thing I ever heard I got to tell you that guy's got more guts than anybody he said he had somebody over here using his name and his uniform did face busted but you've got to be some kind of a coconut to believe that guy what about his girlfriend that's a sister strike she took him to the airport every day he was gonna fly somewhere to play for the bills but he never took off and she did that for a whole season I mean on one the counter d hey sirs laughs Baker is there they lost the ball in right 30 feet short he never did move on that fall it just hit and he wants them just like you and I though there's a 1981 Gold Glove winner you don't know II not know where it is he sees it bouncing unfortunately for him one bounce is now da Zeus at first two down and Charlie Hudson the battered of course the Jill story if nothing else that gets the pitcher out of the way and there goes a wild pitch into the philadelphia dugout 20 based on the rubber he didn't see it written I'm telling you he is really uptight about it and it just goes right off his glove and shinguards that's even a replay what happens it would hit the dirt they're going to give him a wild pitch but he really got down there later I don't think he's sawing so Fanny is charged with two wild pitches and the past fall against temple vania has given up two of the four runs an account to it over to Charlie Hudson did you do that thing broadcast you know I don't remember did I do that or yes I did permission to Nick inhabiteth by the way of you wandering the National League for most wild pitches in a league championship - in a game and the people who did it Juan Marichal Hall of Famer some tough Dominican Joaquin Andujar last year and now Alejandro Pena a Latin American snack - the wild fish - and - to Charlie Hudson with dije soos at second or two to Philadelphia in the fourth inning I guess it's just me that even with men on now they're all catching one hand catching the ball down and reaching and it's not just simple it's everybody I watched great Carlton Fisk last night and I'm saying remember him doing it that much really the pimple is trying to protect that fractured hand at least however one run two hits at second base and the end of for Florida to Philadelphia we'll be right back after these the Philadelphia skyline with a magnificent blue background well what a day you could set this one in your ring temperatures in the 70s and you can see forever and all the way down into Veterans Stadium and here we are Joe at least one thing about this ballgame it's a departure from the overpowering pitching we've seen in the first two games it is I mean everything is an adventure fly balls wild pitches and it makes for exciting baseball I like this I love the the low-scoring games but but this is more exciting yeah and of course a guy like Pena in 170 some odd regular-season innings only two wild pitches he's Aten that much in the last two innings so the pressure is here as well well he's made it tough I mean on the catcher because of the I think looking at that ball just trying to pick it up it's it's just not ideal conditions there's Alejandro and he's going to go out for a hitter so his day is done Rafael and estoy is in the on-deck circle lights are on but just looking at your screen you can see they have not taken any effect there are slivers of sunlight scattered in an arc from left field to the right-field corner and there's a crescent of sunlight and straightaway center but the rest of the field is all in shade and net with such a bright sky the lights have not taken effect at all temple followed by Landis going in sacks ground ball down to D hey Zeus you know one more thing to ban I think that's asking to catch her a lot when the guy says well I'm gonna I got a cut fastball that I can sail into the right hand and as I can sink it I can do this it's almost like he throws the ball and says good luck you know in your own I mean it used to be a fastball was a fastball and I don't say you can have signals for everything but when they started making moves on their own it does make it a bit tough well I'm sure as we look at Rick Honeycutt the left-hander throwing in the Dodger bullpen four runs four hits for the Phills including a home run by Gary Matthews two runs four hits for the Dodgers including a double by Baker and a two-run home run by Marshall and here is Landis toy a switch-hitter a chopper to the right side nice play by Joe Morgan to get [Applause] and with that little motorman's glove that he wears he made quite a play on that ball all gets up there in a hurry on its artificial surface and the Joe is there he gets it on that little short hop and once he had it easy out five gold gloves to Little Joe and his career his proof of the reason why covered a lot of ground though with two down in the fifth inning Steve sax will be the batter followed by Greg Brock Phillies 4 Dodgers 2 top of the fifth Charlie Hudson Bob Wells relieved in the second inning though it's been Welsh then Pena who was rushed into the breach and will be honey Connor and Hudson trying to do it himself the counter sacks somebody loves just under an assumed name that was some banner dunno all three [Music] Charlie Hudson struggling with sags Charlie touched up for a single by Baker and then a two-out home run by Marshall right we had one sacks checking with Amalfitano be whether he's hitting or taking and the old days he'd be taken but who knows all better off but with Brock's power on deck it might be a factor considered indeed by this order we take for me if I were managing three in one and there's ball boy will they get a break and Greg Brock will be coming up drop fouled out remember when Mike Schmidt leaned into the stands to make a fine play an info heart in the third inning but lined out to jollof a the rock is all for two for Hudson it's the first pass first walk is given up sax is over talking to Mota I just wonder if he's thinking here I could think I could steal on this guy and all that but you got the time run at the plate he liable to take one swing and tie it up for it I'm sure that's what motors telling him rock with 20 home runs but they really turned off the faucet on him he had not at all run since September the 7th ball one the Phillies completely tied up rock during the regular year he hit less than 120 but again you have to remember as a kid hitter there's a kid pitcher and Diaz is trying to babysit him through it they're playing Brock to pull the ball Rose has to hold sax at first base so there's a big gap there everything indicates that sax will stay there to give the hold of Brock to maybe give him a ball that he can pull and maybe in it out of here because they're swung way around and Morgan is beyond the skin line so he's playing a deep second base he walked sacks remember he went three and OH three and one and then walked him but now he is - no that means he is missed six of his last seven pitches and Claude Osteen going out with Ron Reed and Willie Hernandez down in the bullpen the interesting thing about a Charlie Hudson a kid like this has a dramatic effect on a ballclub they expected so much from Hudson they were able to trade dick Ruthven to get Willie Hernandez and then when they got Hernandez they were able to trade Sid Mongi to get jollof a and all of that is because of Charlie Hudson's youthful prowess as you see Reed and Hernandez in the pen mechanically what else Dean looks for is the kick of that left the back leg the right leg rather if he slings it and doesn't bend the knee he's too far out he watches to a known drop could be swinging here [Applause] is an extremely selected hitter he could have had a green light and still didn't want the location it's not where he wanted to drive it and Sachs goes pitch in the dirt the throw is very high so Joe I think you were right when you said Sachs talk to Mota about Kenny have permission to steal he had to have it because he runs all the time here's the motion watch that back leg now if he just slings it without bending the knee no he's got it been so he did all right on that one the throw is high Sachs's and easily Claude Osteen I think he's just an outstanding pitching coach because he knows his his people very well 3 1 is popped in the air foul and out of play off to the left carrying back into the sea so it is three into - Brock - out Sachs at second base were in the top of the fifth inning Philadelphia 4 Dodgers 2 a lot going on at the vet get out of this spot [Applause] [Music] no runs no hits ax left at second base and at the end of four and a half innings the Phillies for the Dodgers 2 overhead shot of the Franklin Institute here in Philadelphia Franklin Parkway magnificent Fountain Square they're actually the circle watch a beautiful city this is a great sight seen city you you really in fact I saw today in a favorite of dom deluise came over here to sightsee and nobody believed him he said well I had to be here and I didn't want to fly back to the coast and come back I just came to sightsee this is a great area to sightsee I know and of course when you come here in 1976 we really had the smack of it when we went over Independence Hall and you look down you think hey this is where it all began it's all about right here boy I tell you in 76 when they had everything here you're really glad that your pop took out the papers I'll tell you that brother there is Rick Honeycutt he is the third Dodger pitcher a record of two and three those two victories with the two excellent games one better than the against Philadelphia but of course I'm sure Lasorda is unhappy that his hand is fours he had to use pain yin and Honeycutt with his ball club behind he was hoping that Hunnicutt would take the place of a Steve now have his ducks in a row yo Morgan Petros and Mike Schmidt in the bottom of the fifth inning could help you for and the Dodgers - and what we might have lost in numbers at veteran's stadium certainly made up for by exuberance market is flied to right single to right a button pow off to the left on one I have to almost smile as see Morgan do that because every year when he goes spring tree he spent a day and a half with Rod Carew to teach him and he'd never fun but he always had the threat of the fun well he had a pretty good luck in Honeycutt then Rex two appearances against Philadelphia especially the game he pitched here didn't look like a pension over 2 Joe Morgan with Petros defano for to Philadelphia [Music] wanted to throws and the number three hitter in the inning will be Mike Schmidt i flyball to Center Landro is there any waiting puts it away we'd like to remind you at Saturday at 4 p.m. Eastern NBC sports world returns a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout between undefeated knockout artist John Collins number-two ranked Tony sips and live from Atlantic City New Jersey plus the gold cup unlimited hydroplane race from Evansville Indiana all coming up with NBC sports world returned Saturday John Collins so serious about that fight I understand he postponed his wedding yeah they went back have another fight on his hands ah yes a little punting on the Schuylkill the pitch to Rose ball one have some great rowing clubs one another counter rose [Music] happily it just dies in the truck that the giant Rose is rounded a third single to right 144 to Philadelphia the fifth inning bases empty all right chopper going to be a tough leg Guerrero will let Russell way for the pounce and at the end of [Applause] how do you play that ball it's a base set for rose and you talk about a guy taking off he saw face hit he comes out with enthusiasm watch him hustle down there Cooper Jim Murray talking about lots of ball players have a little boy and they won't let him out Pete Rose lets his out I'll tell you look at this that ball just bounces right over Russell's in Rose has a closet full a collection of base hits in his career and now he has two hits today he's at eleven hundred and fifty eight multiple hit games in his career I mean there's no [Music] imagine pity is flied to right flied to Center over two sit down Rick Honeycutt out of Tennessee out of the University of Tennessee Mike Schmidt one ball and no strikes the count well two basketball just seem to run off the corner here's when you're in trouble no Schmidt has just taken a look at Bristol at Bristol looks at him as if to say what are you looking at me for you're hitting fourth you getting paid all that money in it two balls and no strikes account they all time and he is a dissenter Landro started back comes up short hops it and ease it into left field [Music] [Applause] thought the ball first of all was hit harder than it was he leaned back then tried to catch up to him and then he was afraid it would bounce off in bounce over him he had just seen but after Russell hit his knee lately finally picks it up and fires it into third there's a different angle he we didn't know where it went saw it in the air and away he goes and he has a little trouble picking it up though with runners at second and third one out six dollars with first base open Oh on we'll see it's a double for Mike Schmidt all know there's Joe Beckwith and the Dodger bullpen you know we came out of it and we talked to Pete Rose about it that's the first thing he talked about was this artificial surface and you've really seen it come into play as Lasorda comes out he may make a change of his own right here with Luciano in there not only as you play back your so leery of the bounces and you're so afraid it's going to bounce over your head that you really you're shooting it with a scared stick you're just laying back that's the best way you can put it so Honeycutt has to feel very unlucky rose kills a couple of worms in front of home plate and that's a base hit and then Schmitz fly ball to Center slightly miss played by land row goes for a double and in the box score of course the old story they all look like line drives so Honeycutt gives up two hits and with runners at second and third Lasorda talking to plate umpire John McSherry with less Cano and Matthews back-to-back right-hand batter she just heard him say Beckwith though Joe Beckwith will be called in and Honeycutt with tough luck goes trotting out those are some of the great conversations on the mound when the managers trying to buy some time I mean I've literally heard managers say the umpire well what would you do and get paid for that day just buying time but he's made his change back with this coming in it is written in the cards for the Los Angeles Dodgers the cards read this way one is injured one was wild and the other unlucky and of course the primary character in this little drama today is Bob Welch Welch had to come out with the slight bursitis that he has in his hip the game crumpled and began to fell apart because he came his wildness and an Honeycutt is unlucky and here is Joe Beckwith to pick up for him he's been the Longman for the Dodgers and it's going to be his job to try to hold him Warren sex heads for Philadelphia the Bills have deleting three to nothing so the Dodgers come back three to carry bad news hit the big home run as you see pill fanatic that gave Philadelphia the momentum again leading fortitude and now here in the fifth inning the Dodger infield has to play up and instead of leaving Honeycutt in bring it back with to pitch to les Cano with first base open Sixto is 1 4 7 his problem behind the plate want to know when you have a day like that those prints junkies really give it to you and that pet line always is are you using that D and M model which is dropping home drop involved one ball and no strikes [Applause] at second base Mike Schmidt at third P Bros one out fifth inning for two to Philadelphia bills trying to break it open here [Applause] fire up that just did catch a corner of the strike 2 and 1/2 $6 Cano vizcano batting for elephant boy and see six nose head jerk back he swung so hard he was looking for downtown sort of pacing on a burning bridge right about now - and to the count de leche Cano [Applause] Sixto strikes out so much for all that strategy and the batter now will be Gary Matthew [Applause] now first base open matthews is followed by a left-hand hitter greg gross we'll go ahead and ahead you Gary it's scored in the second inning and then in the fourth inning at that Keaney homerun to get the momentum back time ball for a moment they're not sure the outs is what's happening scoreboard was wrong and it's two outs and all the infielders want to make sure especially Guerrero [Music] [Music] the second and third Matthews was the number one hitter for Philadelphia against Dodger pitching during the regular year hitting 342 and he's 333 in the lake championship series against the Dodgers with two home runs tall [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] I passed ball he really hit it hard there's rose watching the play [Music] another odd [Applause] he wanted to go through [Applause] has come up with two Dan in the fourth inning when Philadelphia was threatened and now evasion to break it open in the fifth inning though with second and third they got away with it I strike unless Cano with a left-hand hitter they pitched to him and he got the key hit and I'm sure Lasorda will be second-guessed but I'm going to go on record right now that I think if I head back without their I'd rather have him pitch into Matthew and I would it grows because Matthews a free swinger roses one Rose hunting Peck guys you're tough guy to strike out he'll get the bat on the ball yeah I'm going to go they had a quick shot on a sorter that's popped in the air pal and Lasorda was furious and said that blankety-blank the pitch so apparently the pitch that Beckwith made to Matthews is what really check Tommy or it was up you can't pitch him he's a dead high fastball hitter that's the scouting report even with two guys who work for Custer who that's what he got by fastball and it is six two to Philadelphia the fifth inning and Lasorda fit to be tied and Matthews goes on a pitch out [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Jack pimple had to pitch out but he was very deliberate and getting rid of the ball and Matthews just the strength steel you see him looking and there it goes right there the throw was high but he was very deliberate in his delivery and Matthews help watching my fix [Music] and of course you have to be reminded that yeah to tape together look at all the bandage around his head and you wonder why he's deliberate it takes in that long just to grip the bus ride maybe he's playing with the fan and he's got to make sure he gets a good grip on it and then that's why that's why he is delivered no bad six to Philadelphia what a location and gross was giving looking inside and the pitch was outside with the sky [Applause] the filly six and the Dodgers to Gary Matthews a big man in Philadelphia he has two hits including a home run three RBIs has scored twice and stolen the base and that's the man of Tom Seaver in the very first game sinneth is going to be a big definite factor the guy who might emerge it would be Gary Matthews and he certainly has done that meanwhile Philly Phanatic putting on a show with an aide in front of the Dodger dugout needless to say spirits are high in Philadelphia the Phillies lead three nothing the Dodgers came back with two and now Philadelphia's broken and open six - and it's Baker Guerrero and Landrum in the 6th inning manager would commit himself about tomorrow's pitches but the Dodgers now are running out of options Tennessee you would yes Gary Royce who said so well but lost to Steve Karlin we're just about a half to be the Dodgers pension tomorrow would you say Joe he's better start Royce and use everybody that he can including al campaigners if he asked because that's it and he can't come back with Valenzuela he made too many pitches would have to save him if there being a Sunday flyball to straightaway center Craig rose six dollars Oh No [Music] stayed in the game in right field though the outfield is Matthew's gross Atlas Cano one down and Pedro Guerrero the batter her arrow struck out and flied to left over too what's important is he struck out with a runner at second and when Hudson made that big off-speed pitch he just hid under it and flied to left but having been given a reprieve Charlie made another off-speed pitch to Marshall and Marshall hit it into the Dodger bullpen that's really the only noise the deities have made today in the fourth inning the Hudson pitching Oh too six runs seven hits for Philadelphia two runs four hits to the Dodgers Hudson asked to beat the Dodgers but is the Vickery against Eastern rivals Pittsburgh and Montreal he saved his best to beat the teams they had to be its I was talking about the gym that he pitched against Montreal when he beat Rogers don't look at me I didn't call for that job on to the calendar Pedro Guerrero [Applause] [Applause] so five strikeouts and with two down in the sixth inning here is Kenny land row Landrieu lined out fouled out and trouble with Mike Smith's ball in the fifth inning and it went for a double and of course that turned out to be a two-run inning and a big inning indeed Philadelphia's scored in every inning but the first was the first inning Bob Welsh was pitching oh and one account all into 4-run lead me smells it like a real thoroughbred and he's coming down the stretch hard ground fouled out of play or Hudson his only victory after August 8th was a big one it was a complete game poor hitter in Montreal on the 22nd of September that completed the Phil's second double had a sweep of the Expos in eight days Hudson's win gave the Phillies the season high three-game lead with ten days to go and of course they were never headed even though he has a so-so record of eight and eight he really made some sizable contribution that he did he puts really tough baseball there's a foul ball a third out of you know the only Western Division team the Charlie Hudson beat this year was Houston and back-to-back starts in ten starts against Western teams he was two and five has been staked to a six to two lead and almost everybody cares but not him you talk about sleeping the sleep of the good child there's a case in point one and two do it of course hope Burns eternal even in the youngest heart somehow some way somewhere I'm gonna get me a ball a one-hopper bank back up on the ball - hey Suz did having to do that I knew we had to get extra to throw I've just been a high throw here's the throw and Pete up [Music] just us beating good call by Lee Weyer here's the other angle on it looks like he had plenty of time maybe wondering about Rose he's 511 it's just that he is so stocky he's at 203 here's Marshall struck and era charge daddy issues remember in the fourth inning and away with the off-speed pitch to Guerrero Marshall Bergman in his 6 2 Philadelphia top of the 6 and the Phillies are keeping an eye on Charlie Hudson had their bullpen active again Ron Reed been throwing down there away yes been looted your favorite miss if we wouldn't mention it usually the greatest praise they can get a silence there hasn't been many beefs and that comes to mind when wire just made that call it was a tough call yet it was so automatic hard right oh and to to Mike Marshall Landro could have walked the second base huts it wasn't even paying attention as we look at the Phillies with Paul Owens Bobbie wine on the far right of your screen Bobbie wine had a club in Venezuela Julia and Charlie Hudson pitch warrant I think wine to do it bring in Hudson law why oh and to Landro goals and Marshall Scott now [Applause] six strikeouts for Charlie Hudson no runs no hits an error and a man left and at the end of five and a half innings the Philly six and the Dodgers two Joe Beckwith will be facing a trio here the bottom of the six ball Diaz he might be hey Suz six runs seven hits and one error for Philadelphia two runs four hits and no errors for the Dodgers there of course in the press release today's starting lineup for Philadelphia Boas walked and brown into third open one Beckwith is the fourth dodgy efficient Welsh pana Honeycutt first a breaking ball and a low fastball that he has a count his way onto you have a feeling however that the momentum and that the entire situation is very much in the hands of Philadelphia to the Dodgers don't have much to say about it as the air strikes out one reason the fact that Charlie Hudson outside of the home run by Marshall has not been in any real trouble all day he is struck out a half a dozen and the Phils meanwhile have filed up before run Li behind him the azuz grounded a third single allowed he's 1 for 2 Welsh went an inning and a third and had to come out and he is the pitcher of record then paying you two and two thirds Honeycutt a third of an inning and Beckwith each of the preceding Dodger pitchers have been charged with two runs Welsh mania and Honeycutt the big man has to be Gary Matthews will walk the home run in a two runs Terry Crawford the third base umpire picked up the foul ball and didn't throw it in the stands and he heard about it one ball and one strike to count a D hey Zeus foul tip that fastball pimple holding on to it one and two T that Beckwith looks like he's got real good stuff today is a very easy delivery cause he's a fella who fought his way back from nowhere he's just thankful to be pitching he suffered a strange injury Fitzie in spring training his head snapped like whiplash and he had a detached retina and it looked like he was finished and then he was able to bide his time take the proper medication do what they told him to do the I eventually Nazi Betty hey sirs that's nice too well they told my know that I don't they gave me the name I don't know her I'm on the baby it was an interesting story in ophthalmology that just went down the drain - and - the cow to D hey sirs one out of the sixth inning six to two Philadelphia popped in the air and angling back is Brock with sacks behind him and it'll be Brock go to down in the sixth inning I'll tell you after okay [Applause] the Charlie Hudson getting innovation and well-deserved with a half a dozen strikeouts outside of that one pitch to Mike Marshall he has thoroughly tied to dodges own Billy six dodges to bottom of the sixth inning gone I asked Hudson what kind of a hitter how would you describe this unpredictable where's any one in wine for Charlie Knutson struck out in the second inning and struck out in the fourth no he started to look predictable who want to do because of a curveball that's unfair now I gave him Powder River and he lifted a fly ball to land row okay they're gone in the sixth and at the end of six the filly six runs seven hits the Dodgers two runs four hits seventh inning coming up and we'll be right back after these messages from your local station it is six to two fill adele p as we go to the seventh inning and a magnificent ur amic view of the city indeed it'll be Bill Russell followed by Jack pimple and then we'll see about Joe Beckwith spot and that's foul back on one Russell grounded out twice he's over two Russell with three hits in the series Billy scored twice in the second at once and the third the Dodgers counted with two of the fourth but it has been all Philadelphia sent with one in the fourth and two more in the film to take a commanding 62 lead five pop-y and a shallow left knee hey Zeus out Matthews comin it will be Matthew one away on a fly ball on the left and the batter Jack simple for the moment no one in the on-deck circle temple struck out and grounded a short with one hit in the series now Darryl Thomas will come out on deck to bat for Joe Beckwith [Music] Zachery down in the Dodger bullpen Anderson begins to heat up in the Philadelphia Penniston case seven strikeouts [Applause] the action well he's tearing him up what do you think happens at that slow curveball that through the marsh that's just Charlie Hutchins putting on a great show with his seven strikeouts his I was nine in July when he had a three hitter against Houston he is very much on the beam and here is Darryl Thomas the second Dodger pitch hitter member Landis going bad and for pain you darrell has two hits in the championship series [Music] started against Carlton when you watch Hudson throw like he's throwing now that's why when he throws a lollipop like he did to Guerrero and the marshal Morgan comes in and talks to Zed you're gonna get beat get beat with this stuff one at one account of course with the lighting conditions the way they are about ten minutes of sex local time and Philadelphia the lights have not taken effect and Hudson is the modern-day player says is bringing it two and one account to Gerald Thomas the Nadi's do not have a hit since Marshalls two-run home run in the fourth Hudson very much in command Nadia's have only had a runner on the walk and on an error since the home run [Music] Thomas taking a good look at Amalfitano but with the score being what it is you would think he would be taking but about it there's Joey and on deck of course the leadoff man Steve sax three in one [Music] three and two two hours back touches [Applause] so he's put and I used to veteran Stadium in Philadelphia the scene Abby National League Championship Series the Phillies winning the first game one to nothing the Dodgers coming back to win the sexes game four to one and Philadelphia leading today six to two in the seventh inning tonight Game three of the American League championship paper in Chicago and Baltimore and they are even at one game apiece battle started Oh God [Applause] interestingly enough if there be a pattern for for lawns to take number it the team that has scored first in all previous games not only of this playoff series but also the Baltimore White Sox here the team that has scored first as all right Marshall coming up here then I'm sure he takes comfort in that but I bet he takes more comfort in the fact that he's got that poor run ladies get reading Holland in that bullpen that out but it is interesting that is steaming in the championship series front runners they get a lead they hold on good numbers section one be pitching how to feed Rose rose grounded to third single to right and then beep one down in front of the plate at big high bounce to shortstop and he had himself a single that was the most important base hit Mike Schmidt then hit the drive Landro unsure of it and played for a double and then with two out of the inning Gary Matthews singled home two runs and that teens the 4-2 game the wide open 60 game Rose followed by sermon and John McSherry saying I don't need to hear that she points over the Dodger dugout somebody on a Dodger bench trying to get that ball club away kanima Jerry really let them have it [Music] of course the Dodgers go down felt that Dara Thomas should have warned two breaches that then struck out I still play Dinah's three consecutive hits and here's Mike Schmidt flied to right and hit the ball the sound that went for a double in the fifth and Landro started back then tried to come up then tried to short hobbit being the wall over in the lapel and kind of snicker because everybody in the ballpark knows it except you and you keep waiting for somebody to help you now he thinks he can just pick it up he checks the runner 9 thought he knew where the ball was and he says where is it oh there it is there's all these people I see it but you as a catcher you don't know where it is [Music] down it's a guy to help him out somebody defense there on the umpire help you count you want to know the gown ball two a big fan of his he would help a fall cope he just showed up for the team picture that's right Wow any dozing meet three before today check it first no swing and that's one of those calls that the umpire said okay if you guys are going to ask the appeal play we'll go along with it but once the man at first 1/3 max and we don't want to hear the arguments and that's when almost anybody ever question their to try [Music] Riano the count of Mike Schmidt [Music] [Applause] thank of the road Stoller's Cano he's got one man out looking for the ground ball and one of Zachary's best pitches is that little overhand curveball that he drops right on the outside corner looking for the ground ball paralyzed kono came in to hit Felipe in the fifth inning and struck out against Beckwith and there was all one and Zachary is saying something McSherry McSherry an attic under his mustache it's been Welsh mania honey and Zachary want to know the gondolas coño it's too much talking going on for Luciano he backs off wow those hitters feel that way first Bros at second one away the Dodger bullpen orel hershiser begins to loosen up there remember he was the youngster who caught the home front by Marshall when the Dodgers were in the game one pitch away from loading them up and on deck is the fella happened a big day Gary Matthews Matthews walked and scored in the second homered in the fourth and it was a very important home run it was 3-2 to Philadelphia and he lifted their spirit make it 4-2 and in singled in two runs in the fifth inning two-on-one rose and Schmidt [Applause] here's a situation now where pimple goes out too and one of the things he's saying I'm sure is look you pitch to the hitter I don't think they're running get the hitter with Matthews coming up next now I'd go one more step and get a sign with you this action Russell to get the trailer if Rose has got too big of lead but be alert for it I don't think they'd be running but you can't assume that you gotta assume they are going alright let's see what they do Rose from second bedroom with one out [Applause] do not go and it's fouled away you wouldn't think they'd be gone with Matthews coming up next in Wisconsin strikes out that much she can't ever say they're not going for sure and then they could your finger in their air three and two one out of bottom of the seventh Philadelphia sex not used to do not go and upon us for his paper when the runners home no let's go cause briefly Omaha channel 3km TV [Applause] [Applause] tommy lasorda listening and looking at this crowd and the ovation for Gary Matthews war homered single knock three run hitting 400 in this area bound away he is 4 for 10 with two home runs three RBIs and for good measure has a walk and a stolen base [Music] the Gary Matthews standing tall and left field to the pills and on deck Greg gross to if you're not keeping score in the eighth inning Sachs Brock and Baker coming up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Easter [Applause] [Applause] here's to face him and you see Matthew [Applause] like there might be a way piqué diggin hard looks like the throw is going to be T but the shard how fitful night to make sure he caught the bomb it was not a good throw those times do I think it rose sure seven to Philadelphia or RBIs for Gary Matthews to single to walk a home run and he's 5 4 in this area Gregg survival and roe and that will be that and as we consider the choice for Most Valuable Player on the list has to be the left Juliet's two left end of seven Billy seven not used to Gary Matthews this is a little bit earlier they made him come out [Applause] so Gary taking the curtain call this crowd chanting beat la beat LA and you can understand why the Dodgers in the Phills met in the divisional playoffs in 1977 and in 1978 each time the Dodgers beat the bills three games to one thoroughly frustrating the Philadelphia effort so now Philadelphia leading sava to in this pivotal third game as ball Wanda Sykes and of course during the regular year the Dodgers won 11 out of 12 from Philadelphia and winning five out of six years so in a chant beat LA I mean the chant comes from the heart that's been around one two Steve backslide to right flied to Center walked and stole a base in the fifth inning ground ball to short - Avanti aces handling sacks ball and the batter is Greg Brock Brock fouled out in the first inning played by Mike Schmidt lined out to right and with sax at second and two out in the fifth inning struck out Rock is still looking for his first hit in the series is over eight you wonder will Lasorda continue with his hunch he has just kept saying there they were considering Monday I've got a hunch about this kid that he's going to do something but he's running out of time as well as hunches he's trying to make a ballplayer and may cost him a couple games [Music] it was Steve Boros who said it fast he said sometimes good strategy is bad psychology this may be the case trying to make a player and he's staying with him staying with it 2 & 1 to Graig crime now Hudson has made a hundred and three pitches and here we are with one out in the eighth - Judah Greg fouled out of play for the Dodgers the day began when their number one pitcher Bob Wells retired four in a row and then had the hip problem that had flared up twice in two of his last three starts and he had to leave and when he left the ball game unraveled for pana Honeycutt Beckwith and Zachary and meanwhile Charlie Hudson was just being tested read into Gary Matthews took the game in hand it was three to two when Matthews homered to make it four to two when Matthews single to make it 6 to 2 and when Matthews single to make it 7 to 2 [Applause] I'm strike equaling his Gutzon struck out nine against Houston on the 20th of July and he makes a good pitch here you can see why he gets he ties him up inside with the breaking ball even if he had hit it with the swing that he had he would not been able to drive that ball so a magnificent performance by 24-year old Charles Hudson out of Ennis Texan we'll be met [Applause] Charles Hudson has tired seven in a row phonologies have not had a hit since the fourth inning and at the end of seven and a half the pill seven and the Dodgers to bottom of the eighth inning the Phillies seven runs nine hits the Dodgers two runs four hits and Bo Diaz at bouncing a third backhanded by Guerrero who gets it one away one down good play by Guerrero and D hey soos coming up again as we work our way to the final outs and when the Dodgers come up in the ninth inning they'll have Guerrero Landro and Marshall they'll have a selection in our estimation of the most valuable player in the game I think you might agree with us as the story has unfolded that's a curry the fifth Dodger pitcher trying to get Denise's who grounded a third single and fouled out and hits it to right but Marshall is there two down and Charles Hudson will be getting an ovation seven in a row [Applause] on the big message board they flashed our secret weapon voice no secret now you struck out twice and flied to Center each time he's had two strikes but in the sixth inning against Beckwith e25 all the satyr 1 & 2 two out eighth-inning pill 7 Dodgers 2 Guerrero Landrum Marshall you up at night for the doggies tomorrow our Jerry Royce heads off the Charles Hudson but he can do no the Phillies out in order in the eighth and at the end of eight the Phillies seven runs nine hits the Dodgers two runs four hits Guerrero Landrieu and Marshall with their feet in the door Charles Hudson 24 years old out of Ennis Texas look at those numbers Joe 78 strikes only thirty balls in the I think the story in addition to that is the last base hit that doctors had was on that slow curveball he threw the Marshall since then he has struck out six and he has just been raring back throwing strikes and getting the job done the Hudson will be pitching to Pedro Guerrero followed by Kenny Landro and Mike Marshall and the three outs away from going to games to one-up Al Holland and Willie Hernandez Philadelphia open Rose Morgan da Susan Schmidt on the infield gross and left denier in centerless Cano and right Guerrero's had just one hit in the series hitting 125 and he's over three today that one hit was the triple for two runs that help give the Dodgers a victory 9 striker the Charles Hudson well he really had an up-and-down year too in ten starts then five straight wins then one in five in his last 11 start put it all together he wound up eight and eight Paulo and sent him out there to do a big job against Pittsburgh and Montreal and he succeeded and he sent him back out to do a big job today and he's been right on the money the Dodgers have not been heard from since a two-run home run by Mike Marshall in the fourth inning and we're now in the night 1 & 2 Charles Hudson has pitched a great game the Joe it's time for MVP selection helped him with consider play in pitching that great game was [Applause] where it looked like Charles Hudson might crack when it got to 3-2 in the fourth inning it was Gary Matthews who literally picked him up the team up and the city of Philadelphia and so today's and Gary Matthews happy to present a check for $1,000 in the name of Gary Matthews to the Special Olympics [Music] and no strikes the count again eel and roe it was aboard on an error [Applause] there was no way Petros would not make this play he knew exactly where [Applause] and this crowd is I'm straight retired by not a lot a hit since and he is struck out nine [Applause] White Sox in Baltimore tonight at 8:00 [Applause] and tomorrow night here at Veterans Stadium the Dodgers try to stay alive in Philadelphia [Applause] of the crowd face of Lasorda would [Applause] [Applause] Claude Osteen Bobby [Applause] so Marshall walks to delay the moment Bill Russell will be the batter the Dodger baserunners since Marshall homered in the fourth have been sacks who walked in the fifth aboard on an error in the sex and the two-out walk to Marshall in the night and that sums up the feeling here they are indeed sight if they're BNN man [Applause] one [Applause] there's your home feel the Dodgers quality [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] while Steve Yeager can do is stay in there because the day of mr. Charles Hudson and to the Philadelphia Phillies the Dodger 72 [Applause]
