[Music] degrees low humidity and we're set to go up in the 1980 season where these two teams left last year as the AFC champion Steelers were on to the Super Bowl and the Oilers were excused home losing the game kicks it off for Houston deep to return one of the stars of the Super Bowl Larry Anderson for the Steelers he's at the 10 [Applause] heroes 52-yard return for Larry Anderson who might well have been the most value play in the Super Bowl accelerates up through there as a good return man must do and the Oilers I think we're just so keyed that they bunched themselves into the center of the field what a great way to start excellent field position actually 62 yards for Anderson unofficially on the return Bradshaw sets his line Michael Harris on the fake Bradshaw [Applause] three [Music] and as he dumped hard on his first play of 1980 stammering who came up with a hip Gretchen uncharacteristic opening pays the price as you saw the ball bounce free as he hit the ground corrected Jacy Wilson 33 made that tackle of Bradshaw [Applause] wide receivers left was one [Applause] by a yard there's the starting backfield for the Steelers Bradshaw with garrison for Paris needs only 35 yards today become number 3 rusher all time the great wide wrist tight-end Randy Grossman big and strong Webster porcelain Brown they used to be small and quick now the average 260 pounds a man and with the weightlifting program in Pittsburgh they are third and one [Applause] play-action pass situation where it really came as a surprise to Houston through there nobody even close takes it around and waltzes into the end zone right down on the field put on your helmet get a look at Bradshaw all kinds of time to throw and a receiver wide open bar they are opening with them with the burners on full [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] down 7 nothing Houston will get the Campbell might well be the bandit one Phillip says his eyes riveted on virtually shut out here last year he may be the key we talked about Stabler but Campbell needs to run at this offensive will go against the Pittsburgh steel bars kick is short and taken up at the 16 yard line [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the rookie Rob carpenter so where the steamers had a great return the Oilers start at their own 23 was sailor the new quota and rushing each of his first two years of the most exciting clears the lake his other wide receiver Mike barber the tight end Frank protect Stabler [Applause] with only Campbell behind stapler [Applause] damn pastor a nice Cole will save us and will prove that wrong the first try grows Farini pathetic as Campbell unable to hang on to a relatively easy chance can you imagine Campbell out in the open with the football in his hands and only light defensive backs to Kenton to tackle him it's obvious what they want to do the oil is in the past stabler figures for short matters again only Campbell behind him a draw draws a crowd at the 28 where it'll be third down and six defense for the Steelers it's the same defensive unit to the man that played in the Super Bowl no changes in the defense Greenwood and Green man-to-man so well with Wagner and shale the better and safety [Music] receivers [Applause] as the Steelers deep in the Houston [Applause] what a very physical defense white shoes Johnson locked up on him man the man comes all across the field with him and Stabler weights long enough but you see right there they just went across the screen probably should never have thrown that ball and obviously under throw it's slightly white shoes doing a good on the bigger point getting him out of bounds Bradshaw fires out the Harris enable franco caught more passes last year than he has and it's an indication that bradshaw may be going more to that flare path I'm Phillips what a contrast and the two head coaches today Philips off the wall take off your boots and chat a while and the taciturn [Music] professor on the other side Chuck Noll it's dr. Chuck Noll and I will tell you more about that later second in town three yards to the trade [Music] Andi Doris Shirley call Pannell van buffet from three for the Oilers Thompson stringer who's been hurt 54 in Brazil the all-pro wilson stammering at the corners Mike rang felled who led the NFL Berry was sensational last year we have a four-man line in there for Houston Kennard and stems root playing inside Houston trying to do some different things single back set up offensively four-man line defense we normally employed in a three-man setup obviously they feel that if they're going to beat this Pittsburgh team they have to come with some surprises and perhaps Bradshaw and audible icing picks up the five-yard illegal procedure Billy Ray penny who was replacing the veteran Sam Davis at left guard the file it'll be third and 12 one guy we want to keep our eyes on number 56 art stringer he's the key to the inside of defense for the Oilers [Music] for Stallworth no it's Jim Smith and it's thrown out of bounds by Bradshaw good carriage fan strikes Tamarack 27th well blanketed so they grumble reefer the interception by blunt and the penalty puts Pittsburgh at the 32 and let's see you yes their goal for the field goal bar coming in with a field goal unit [Music] man mark below number 16 airforce one they would like to see replace Bradshaw 50-odd attempt it would be the longest in his young pro career still be able to boast about as long as being 46 yards the Oilers able to survive the pass interception by blunt they'll get the ball at the line of scrimmage 232 will return to River Station the grand opener it is on NBC Houston and Pittsburgh the Steelers lead 7 nothing we played just ran in Hampton to this first quarter from 30 to Stabler [Applause] 56 one of the things that Houston had to do is to rebuild the left side of their offensive line Leon gray number 74 they say he's our first round traded their first-round choice and a sixth and boy that's a good deal you see him just knocking that defender right to the ground quick Dwight white and he took him down making room world three Houston again he's shy of the person at the 41-yard line [Music] figures to open up more running room for tables we'll be able to pee they feel quite so heavily on our Oh but Stabler's start today old for two with an interception so he's gone in this sequence to Campbell Stabler if he can get it going will stay with the running game in fact when he was in Oakland quarterback they had a great [Applause] Radian [Music] I love their steel [Music] [Applause] you like the gang that's exactly what the Steelers do on this play they've got a lot of black shirts in on the action they turn Campbell to the outside and look how many guys give a piece of that tackle they really stack him up that's great defense Tim man rush has cliff parsley will punt for Houston do Bell back in the 20 yard for the Steelers he's about to become the all-time at the nineteen [Applause] I'm out here in this hardwood 937 remaining in the first quarter the score the world champions fever seven the Euler is nothing we're score now the day away from Pittsburgh the Cardinals 7 the Giants nothing in the first quarter and we'll bring you up to date on all the scores as we receive them Atlanta jumps in from the Minnesota 6 nothing first period Brian will have all the highlights of games at halftime scores at the end of the game on her NFL report Webster the all-pro center over the ball Pittsburgh leading seven nothing puts it in play for the 32 Franco Harris notorious slow starter but why to finish his runner and playoff history he's had all day one 100-yard game in an opener and he gained 3 on that drive if you can control the center man the nose man in a three-four defense you can run the ball against the three four Mike Webster number 52 one of the strongest centers is doing that they're getting a little help as he gets Steve Corson number 77 to Pola let's go down and look at Webster specifically pushes off one man and seals off Ted Thompson on the backside making room for that run [Applause] doing a double pirouette on the sidelines before falling I don't think the weren't graceful more beautiful job of hauling this pass in and of course the pass is right on the right on target look how he stretches Olli still keeps those toll the leaning tower of Pittsburgh John Stallworth 46 [Applause] Jack Tatum is down [Music] all inside that he can't let's you make up your own line tackle any still hangs on to the football [Applause] rivetti first quarter [Applause] complacent the sensational jackknife physical catch and almost a one hander to finish it off by stallworth don't forget following this one more for you NBC sports will continue our exciting coverage NFL football second game of the doubleheader most of you will see Denver and philadelphia other games Baltimore in the Jets Oakland at Kansas City San Diego and Seattle so stay tuned NBC sports proudly brings you the finest football matchups in the NFL second in town Houston needs to generate a bathroom very 3 4 6 66 yards and a touchdown Harris two yard line playing leapfrog with his blocker good penetration on the part of the defense Big Mike's tens rude pursuing from the inside real change in that young man from last year came into camp had contract properties was late came in overweight never really got on track he's got on a weight further than the offseason they say attitude has changed a hundred percent and they're looking for big things out of that young man and Reno for Houston chasey Wilson has left the field a possible knee injury six [Music] [Applause] my crime fell 37 family home [Music] they're marching for more [Applause] first report from Green Bay the Bears have kicked 42-yard field goal three nothing Chicago we've seen more and more Sidney Thornton injured through the last part of the year he's a very valuable man in this office for the Steelers Baus is out there but the whistle is blown they've got good field position down on the 19th he gets nowhere in fact lost covered well swarming defense 10 Washington 59 outside linebacker from Mississippi Valley there to greet him first the fact of Washington's back in there would indicate that stringer is out of that lineup they have tested that knee and found it to be a little water would be very bad news if it is indeed [Music] Pittsburgh John Kolb is out at left tackle and Ted Peterson has replaced Hamill tech to see whether the cold the tree or go to Brazil but got only to the 20-yard line to make the tackle from the secondary along with stammering so for Harris that's a gain of a couple more he needs 23 more yards today to pass the great Green Bay fullback Jim Taylor and then it will be the top three runners home wearing the same number the OJ Simpson when I go here anticipating a possible field goal attempt as [Music] you know he looks 18 this year one right Stallworth left [Applause] everybody looking fast in the secondary watch it for yourself looking for past 15 years hole right there big Larry Brown [Applause] Jack Tatum and it appears that the penalty will go against the Pittsburgh Steelers at least the early motioning by Houston was that way we'll have to give him a chance and offsetting penalty opponent Lee as Bradshaw signalling what's left the official correction my contact number 50 cool [Music] Steve portion 77 the right guard personally a 6-1 and 260 and has the upper body filled to make any weightlifter proud even with that kind of Bezique he can dunk the ball from a standing start he'd like to get out from casual he's so big maybe just look like he was down away from the three like Kelly is that the one yard line [Applause] the Euler defence the backbone there's feet in the end zone very very physical some very tough backs in this kind of stitch less than a yard away from adding to their seven two things right at the goal 69 separating low his linebackers and as they on pile Vernon Harry Dorris the safety spot along with break Bingham what Bradshaw have missed [Applause] here is twice [Applause] [Music] inside 77 the man who Franco ducked right up in behind - stop right down in the pits see Corson coming across cutting people down squirming his way into the [Applause] [Music] the Oilers [Music] all right Bryant here in Pittsburgh Carrie Bradshaw's led the Steelers to a couple of quick scores it's 14 to nothing other scores st. Louis 7 nothing over the giant there's a rebate three members one for you football for two and a half the ice cream truck in Houston last year [Music] ice cream trucks [Music] Sabre as he begins this series [Applause] [Applause] it's unfortunate that that will go as an interception Kenny stay there put the ball right into the hands of Mike barber barber tightly covered by Jack Lambert the ball actually went for you'll see it here stabler back gets the ball off on target now watch Lambert coming across they're right as the ball buzz of bounces into the air that's what it is [Music] this reporters been played in Pittsburgh's hands and muslin Houston [Applause] thirty are this is kind of deja vu a game expected to have all people like lynn swann Bradshaw we [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the end zone on top of the play he's watching all the way [Music] as the past sowe're gets ahold of it right there looks like he pulls it in [Music] the play on forcings call without another look at that swamp pretty tough to tell because he was doing at his feet we're so quick we can freeze it as he catches at the sea perhaps it'll just be academic third down ten at their ten the rule says he's before he gets to the ground [Applause] almost intercepted Brescia very nearly threw that one away in reception [Music] we are going on with the Blitz they know that it's easier to cover man-to-man not as the troomph or receiver get loose they did it there Thompson Bradshaw forced the bathro and Haley 27 yard attempt I bar right Karam through now let's check the penalty in this situation it's the defense that airs and their eagerness to block see what we're talking to Lambert so apparently that is the case five yard penalty will not give Pittsburgher first down they'll take the three peepers decline 17 nothing Pittsburgh as far hits the upright [Music] bouncing Pittsburgh's direction today off to a firing start right to the inside dropping down for three points now let's go to Brian cowbell in New York thank you Brian and of course throughout the course of this year Brian Gumbel will be in our New York studios as all of our NBC games are funneled into the Big Apple Anil so not only will you see the game in action as you are today Pittsburgh in Houston would be right up today not only the scores but the key plays from action elsewhere in the end of Chuck Noll 49 years young in his 12th year with the Steelers and he he has not already done so Paul Dynasty kicking short [Music] 37 best field position for the oiler the start of what should be a great NFL year conclusion of a sensational baseball season especially six teams still entertaining high hopes a World Series opportunity had Tuesday night primetime NBC live 8 o'clock Eastern Time you'll have a choice many of you will see the Dodgers and the Astros battle for first in the West many of you will see battling for the [Music] as his first completion as an oiler to the 41 yard line and you knew it would be playing a tight in position rich castor has the state would like to go to those two big tight ends in Auckland Chester Kasper he likes barber and caster here with Houston one of the raps on stabler is that he is not a mobile quarter seventy-five means you agreed to go [Music] quick dump to Campbell he drops it again [Applause] the euler series they were disappointed the ball look like Campbell just tried to run with it then that's that's anticipation he's so anxious to get going into that secondary watching here he turns his eyes away from that football before he tucks it away I think right in junior high school I start teaching it watch that football until you get it tucked away [Applause] [Music] [Applause] like every time the ball was passed today it's bounced right into the waiting bird feelers very happy Donnie shell he's got one once got to again this goes as an interception to stapler watch this stapler has the ball on target great great play there boxes the ball up Wagner right on top of the receiver and Donnie shell alert Mike Wagner made the play Houston says they've got to turn over their first break of this first quarter the official signal it's Houston's ball hardly enough to bring a smile to Oh a Philips face but at least it's a positive turn for his with 118 left first quarter the Steelers in front 17 nothing let's go back together breccia you know what happened while stripped away by the tacklers [Applause] PL by Houston Johnny show me the day [Applause] Phillips comment he made earlier as injury suffered by John Cole number 55 word yet official word is to the seriousness I'm nursing of just returned Toby yesterday that he was healthy I feel too good six [Applause] frustration Houston they pointed so hard for this game Vika maybe too hard maybe they've burned themselves up maybe emotionally they drained out a lot of their in preparation for this game we said earlier the business as usual [Music] [Applause] [Music] one of the things we should talk Kenny Stabler has only been with this team a matter of weeks and it takes longer than that to build the kind of communication the kind of confidence between receiver and quarterback white shoes obviously could have caught that football sure feels he should have caught that football and maybe by the end of this season or at least mid season they will be catching those footballs [Applause] the Steelers [Music] sixteen breaks a tackle wake miss them before Jeff growth can make the stop 45-yard punt in the 7-yard return as ten seconds remain in this first quarter the Steelers lead here at Three Rivers 17 nothing else where it's three nothing Cincinnati over Tampa Bay in the first quarter New England leads Leyland three nothing first 7/7 the Giants of st. Louis in the second period Minnesota leads in lanta 7-6 in the second quarter no score second period San Francisco New Orleans and Chicago Green Bay tied at three [Music] years made this [Music] sperg there's a man mighty happy to be on the sideline 61 Tyrone McGriff 333 players in the draft he was the 330 third will take them more than McGriff story later leading 17 [Applause] and the block of Peterson of Eastern Illinois let's say getting a little extra work in there you see the cutting ability of number 32 Franco Harris he has great vision the ability to pick is he's a difficult thing to bring down often running us best there's now a 22 yards for surely cult trailing the play five check though I'm gonna be on that sideline saying what does Terry think he's doing he's already running quarterback roll out he's comfortably to lead and here he is running an option if I'm a defensive player and I got a shot at Bradshaw I take him down and maybe he gets hurt on that play I don't know that that's that smart at the 38 second and the short think that a short six the offensive line for Pittsburgh the throw and complete at the 49 throw to Swan coming back to meet the bowl very often all you see is that gets by Swan people are think it possible are the offensive linemen down there especially the guys that are head-to-head in the pits Mike Webster did a great job that time of keeping curly cold away from his quarterback it's been that one-on-one ability he's very strong right Carrie Bradshaw the kinda situation check the field goal that play you saw [Music] and I right there on number 65 coke 78 but they there you see Mike Webster 52 we're curly and his ability to make the power and strength of curly caught number 78 has been a major factor in Pittsburgh's ability to defeat this Euler defense [Music] [Applause] things steadily toward that oiler go on again I think I said they look like flex their muscles here in the early going we sometimes think of this is a team of stars there's Brandi Grossman an average football player in many ways but a great performer I think maybe being on this team brings out the best in some of these players the Oilers stringer from Ball State in his fourth year in JC Wilson the left corner he's playing in his home city Pittsburgh went to the University of Pittsburgh third is Wilson 33 Washington 59 also a part of that tackle JC Wilson they're straight coming in to polish it off [Music] [Applause] cast off next week he said I can't wait I've never been hurt before I don't know how to handle this [Applause] might be a clipping Pollock the Oilers which would be unfortunate they would have field position datum not known for his coverage ability and a good job of stepping in as Bradshaw obviously goes to a third for a second and just makes the mistake there fired it right into the waiting arms of Jack Tatum Tatum with his 31st career interception dean yard Markoff for the clipping houston will maintain possession but instead of starting a Pittsburgh territory will begin back at their wrong 32 yard line these Pittsburgh Steelers I'm sure enjoyed having a shot number 67 on the receiving team on the intercepting team they certainly do not have any love for him did not feel very strongly felt very strongly when he was you know he was on Stan's Road there's a timeout in Pittsburgh 10:53 remaining in the first half Jack Tatum has stopped another Pittsburgh Drive and used to enhance the ball at the 32 yard line oiler territory after the clipping call it's 17 nothing Steelers with nearly 11 minutes remaining in the first half they were back to the air a screen pass Campbell catches this one the 37-yard [Applause] Lambert girl would have had another other scores New England six nothing over Cleveland second quarter no score Miami at Buffalo second fear these are all second quarter scores Cincinnati three Tampa Bay nothing Johnson st. Louis tied at seven Vikings lead the Falcon seven six San Francisco New Orleans no score Green Bay Chicago even at three so it's close everywhere else but here for lead 17 nothing and Houston has yet to get a first down lips nice throw by Stabler immediately Mike Harper the tight end the 42 it can be very close the black of the Steelers you get a feeling for the strength of this Pittsburgh defense they're linebacking if they have the deepest and strongest core of linebackers in football on the last play Lambert making a brilliant play on the screen to say what would have been a big game on that play ham a very physical tackle on a big tight end that is the first first step for Houston in the game so that only the Steelers shown their powerful off is typical Steeler home performance on defense they let the NFL last year on offense they were second on defense that's the kind of balance that has made them the champion that they are and that's why they're going to be difficult to unseat this year you can't beat them on the ground trying to Campbell [Applause] [Music] you have to admire Stabler gamble three passes away but Danny Spangler knows that Campbell is going to have to catch that ball if he's going to be able to do the kind of things he wants during this and there are 16 games in this season not just one stapler goes right back to Campbell Campbell catches this one that has to help his confidence that tells me a lot about Stabler and his leadership [Music] Renfroe [Applause] look at where he's hot too that's the third time today that the ball has been bouncing stabler again at the ball apparently on target it looked like a reception bounces into the air intercepted penalty on the play we'll check that when we come back to Pittsburgh Steelers leading 17 nothing all right Brian with Merlin Olsen to Three Rivers Stadium five interceptions Stabler has been picked off four times Bradshaw once but 304 deflection all the way to the 43 abusive Franco Harris he needed 35 depends on the official score how many yards he gives him on that one that maybe 35 and we'll have the announcement if it is he's great at passing Taylor he's tied him at least Sydney Thornton number 38 the head of Franco to give him a block right there you see the quick acceleration when Franco spots that hole 34 yards now he needs one more he's tied this is a significant home all the great runners in the National Football League's history OJ Simpson Jim Brown and now tied for third Jim Taylor and Franco Harrison Harris with [Applause] [Music] that's the way and the preseason he's that again this football here though is that now needs one yard to move distinguished you can hear the rumbling in the background here comes Harris [Music] very 32 up for the secondary one of the things that bum phillips is trying to do is to upgrade the physical nature of his secondary Berry has done quite a bit in that direction the last two plays it's been burnin peri with very aggressive and very strong tackles actually forcing runner away from the line of scrimmage that was back in the soil possession of 42 yards you know they're going to give a mighty roar when he does [Applause] and it's a beauty the touchback will give the Oilers the ball at the 20 yard line flag is down at the line of scrimmage we may have had a premature release by one of the yes that's the case one of the Steeler lineman down too soon we'll see if the Oilers force Oh decline first now Phillips will take the ball and can't say whether the offense come we're in the second quarter in Pittsburgh with six minutes in 23 seconds remaining before half-time the Steelers lead by 17 the Houston Oilers opening today in Pittsburgh doesn't get any easier for them we'll take another look their first four games go right back to Cleveland [Applause] 22 is that mean to you Merlin Beck if I had been bumped off cigar mr. said what's the worst thing that could possibly happen to with a new quarterback in the situation they have I just said well I certainly don't want to start with Pittsburgh and I don't want to play my first three games against divisional opponents on the road that's exactly what they got for the Oilers but they ready horn rambro Lauren let's pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network WJ CTV Johnstown the penalty is against the Steelers defensively against the facemask and that will give an automatic first down through the Oilers out at the 28 yard line number seven the a defense first on white guilty of the call we're in three worst 80 minutes per on a beautiful football day this with four interceptions have been the Masters of this first half leading 17 nothing Bradshaw and the owners have been able to generate any offense thus far Renfro dropped another that is the six or seven three of the bottles have gone interception I think if you could characterize the early part of this game it's been one of total frustration for stabler he has put the ball on target but as expected he is having real trouble in coordination with his receivers you don't learn to learn to work with a quarterback especially under the pressurized situation that you have in a game against the world champions in just a brief time stapler will get better he'll work better with his receivers but it's going to take time and the Oilers are paying the price for that right now to the left that's Campbell up the build oh holy brakes 33 will be third down and six other scores 16 New England leads Cleveland Buffalo three nothing over Miami three nothing Cincinnati against Tampa Bay all second quarter the jayam so taken the lead over st. Louis 14 to 7 minutes six New Orleans three three bears in Green Bay tied later will be Baltimore New York and Brooklyn Hill San Diego Seattle there are people who have to be asking [Applause] maybe better who the team that won three Super Bowls in a row indication as possible yes and that's going to be breaking to the gun beautiful here at home 6000 used to be 25 great kick by parsley [Applause] return champion and stealer history news the Oh Bell and the Pittsburgh [Music] 441 remaining in the first half Steelers with a ball [Music] every turn two years 17 appear to be arrested Davis first year back from the University of Michigan he was the fourth round breath tech to the Steelers broke isn't of a training camp last season we had a fine summer where the Steelers this year just what they need another good runner first Greg Authority so last year might be a little early to start putting youngsters in there dick so our team has come back many times and there the Bradshaw [Applause] [Applause] and that's the kind of play that we'll actually give a coach holsters and gray hair not a smart play Bradshaw has time to throw the football and they're not getting it you give him time and he's going to find the open receiver he does right there soured actually two Oilers colliding there Tatum running into Vernon Perry number 32 to give stallworth that extra yardage and then you saw the hit on the sideline extracurricular like conduct number 52 defense first let's watch Doctor Doom doing a good job of reading the quarterback sliding with him accelerating to the ball he seats all worth get away the penalty called watch right here he's out of Bounce Stallworth is down it's what he did what he did after that they're really [Applause] stammering on the coverage and coming with my crime felt there's so many things happening here in Pittsburgh you have a great team and you're going to have a lot of numbers to talk about records underline and Terry Bradshaw with that completion to Stallworth has become the 27th player in NFL history to go over 20,000 yards so Bradshaw tapped away by the defender as he did a good job of also putting a helmet to the receiver I don't think except for the Packers in the early 60s and I've ever seen an NFL team with fancy game breakers this the rookie actually second year to aggressive attack alert 7/7 is due Orleans roll Cooper is scored on a 2-yard run with five minutes remaining in the first the 49ers have scored under old Cooper's run to tie New Orleans at seven tony Galbreath had stored earlier for the seats very important to use them that they keep wretch I am the stealers away from the end zone [Music] less than 3 minutes remaining so all day [Applause] it appeared to be Vernon Perry it was only three intersections during the regular season last year within that sensational against San Diego the playoffs and then a record 75 yard interception return for a touchdown against Bradshaw in the AFC Championship so Bradshaw sang out just didn't work out for us Natalie was against Pittsburgh declined by the Oilers and that at least stop the others from it the Steelers from adding to the 17 point lead and Houston has 246 remaining in they have to try to get something of their own Thursday 8 o'clock Eastern Time games people play Franco Harris Mike Adamle was with us here in Pittsburgh today will host the Union tug of war right here from Pittsburgh local members of the US Steel Workers mine workers Bryant Gumbel race between women inmates and members of the prison staff again short yardage and the Sun of the week features a record bus posted by racing star Cale Yarborough all this and more Thursday night 8 o'clock Eastern Time games people play yup remian has tied the game for Cincinnati took that for Tampa Bay his new team at 3-3 in the second quarter get all the scores and highlights NFL lady at halftime Brian Gumbel Oh second down for the Oilers seven to go [Applause] what an epidemic really receiver's they've been some tough chances but how many can they miss play stabler needs someone to hang on to a bull case dubrow's having his trouble not only in having his passes drop but he is not comfortable it is in his own drop the almost trips and falls over one of his own backs Pilate gets back into the back deal and releases this pass targeted when we return what less than two minutes left in the first half here in Pittsburgh with the Steelers lead 17 nothing Houston ball third and seven how about it Merlin Olsen how can a quarterback have such bad luck in first and there's so many drops by the boiler receivers one of the things you have to remember anything it's the unspoken communication between quarterback and receiver is something that you have to work on that for weeks but months and years and it gets better as the time goes on stabler doesn't have the benefit at that time he'll be much better and they will be much better by midseason by the end of the year he need seven for a first sit off the Rob carpenter here come the Steelers carpenter fights his way to the 27 yard line and that will be a first down [Music] although injured in the playoffs too the adjustment to a new quarterback is one that involves every member of the team you got a different kind of count with different kind of cadence in this case you're going from a right-handed quarterback to a left-handed quarterback a quarterback by the way with with a softer pass who throws a softer pass and Pastorini did airs stapler throwing a dart to Mike barbers heard by the Steelers at the 35 yard line short of the first down and a timeout is exercised by Houston with 121 left I have barber and the Oilers trying to get something the Steelers who have opened a 17 to nothing lead all 17 points in the first quarter 1:21 left before the intermission appreciating announcement furnished as a public service by the National Football League in the fine Gifford Nielsen delivering that boom Philips looking at his first string quarterback Ken Stabler first 6:21 romanian 1/2 at a nice catch that time maybe the most Richard caster hey Momo squeeze at the 48-yard 102 in position [Applause] three would over 68 sure is the first of the hand Joe green and green wood stunning on the outside of the defensive line green wood exchanging responsibilities right up the middle and gets there to put Stabler down but obviously good coverage by Pittsburgh Stabler couldn't find the open receiver and have nowhere to go understand doing well is just guard and makes a thirteen at the link we'll have all the details and highlights and have now they one of the knocks against Taylor's critics is that he can't throw long anymore that was intrigued and amused by BOM Philips answer to that he says I'll tell you what why don't you all tell that defense play up real time we'll just see how long can he can throw and he's not been able to get off so long when the deep coverage has been so good for the Steelers and his first name might be interesting to Gillette Chuck Noll and Phillip straight teams for a little while [Music] I might have some interesting reaction to [Music] these two coaches certainly one of the benefits that Chuck Cole has he has the deepest strongest team in the NFL and that's one of the things that that his counterpart Bob Phillips has had to fight plum does not have the strength he does not have the game breakers he's certainly assembling a fine team but it's kind of like the guy that builds the rocket in his backyard he does it was baling wire and anyway he'd get it together [Music] [Applause] before this Greenwood was in the back he invited - five number 68 Fisher jumping up not the kind of guy you'd expect to make that mistake he's been their most consistent lineman over the past few years although they talk about Leon brain for seven days [Music] their best slide in fact Joe bugle the offensive line coach for the said that Leon is the finest football player who's ever coached and they second down 24 [Music] 34 of the oil and wide open caster they gave him the shore Kaster takes it out to the 42 yard line far short of the first half 33:32 Steelers obviously willing to give up short yardage to take the time off the clock carpenter and almost for a touchdown easy interception and he bubbles it into the arms it's going to be another holding eternally it seems like every break they have had during this day has been nullified by a penalty and every possible bounce of the ball is gone against them I guess maybe a bum Philips to tell you there did they're testing us they're seeing if we can handle all this adversity away you look at this first half Merlin and 17 Metheny seems rather light in regard to the dominance of the Steelers they could be a hit by almost twice that much oh I think this statistics will show that it has not been any kind of a ball game statistically and of course [Music] door by virtue of penetration field position could well have been worse than it is Leon gray ticketed with a hold three times an all-pro an all-pro last year see that juggle by blunt he's got the interception whoops right bobbled it right to carpenter but it doesn't kill over the middle to carpenter he almost threw it in the assisting one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you know they gotta hang on to more the second out of this first 30 minutes down by only 17 who knows [Applause] [Music] beautiful day in Pittsburgh Three Rivers Stadium fourth down all at the 32-yard line parsley to kick the bell [Music] with just nine seconds left on the half Bell at the 36 finally wrapped up inside his own 40-yard line [Applause] appreciation for their first half effort [Music] Steelers laid the Houston Oilers 17 nothing it's a mark of the strength of the Houston Oilers that they trail only 17 nothing at halftime because it was all Pittsburgh that first 30 minutes I think if checked all had drawn the game plan he would have included everything except the two bad passes by Bradshaw Pittsburgh has had their way offensively and defensively and they've got a lot of material for their highlight film already reasons only they said that steelker they don't want to make the big plays so 17 nothing the score here in Pittsburgh as they leave the Oilers now let's pick up all the other action Bryant in New York and the first half here in Pittsburgh the Steelers leading the Oilers Infantino there I feel like I should drop the microphone when I talk about Justin and I'm sorry about that for your euston fans but it's been that bad for them seven times in the first half Stabler had the ball on the button and it was dropped by and other receiver and it's only emphasized and exaggerated all the more because Pittsburgh's receivers one install worth making catches with Oilers all around them and jackknifing villain knock him down they don't drop the ball one of the things that's easy to do is to say obviously a lack of effort on a part of Houston I don't think that's the case Nick I think perhaps they they have been too incensed that they're trying too hard they've had 10 days to get ready for this game they've obviously pointed for this game a lot longer than that I think they came in so intense and so tight that they're actually working against themselves and it's going to be interesting to see if they can relax and get down to business and start playing some good football in the second half coach Tom Phillips may have to call in all of his a country wisdom to get them to relax a bit more they can only go one way don't you think yes I had luck any worse than they did in that first half and I doubt it bum had much to say to them at halftime these people are the kind of people who would say to themselves hey you don't have to say I played horribly in that first half I know it I'm gonna try and do something about it in a second effort I guess the question is can they can they in fact do something against this very powerful Pittsburgh team the elusive scored on a touchdown pass from Bradshaw to Thornton that you've seen Harris who's only 2 yards away from becoming the number 3 rusher and National Football League history that should happen early in the third quarter field goal by Barr at 17 nothing Pittsburgh leads Houston as we await the second half right now back to Brad in New York we're ready for the second half warming up number 12 in black Terry Bradshaw and just loosening up Ken Stabler number 10 his younger brother of 9 years Craig Brad shows made this Houston club a seventh round draft pick from Utah State momma says I love them both I hate to say it as well as Terry sings and he has many albums puts him to school if he says Greg is my better voice tonight old you just let me hear his records right now it's Pittsburgh in front 17 nothing but Houston will get the ball first Sidewinder Carl roaches little guys to the 10 stays on his feet to the 30 [Applause] he's slippery knees out of bounds at the 36 yard line Mike Wagner bumped him out of bounds so Davis also another play at least Greg had a good sense to go to a good college Utah State I'm glad to see that Roach's looks to me if he really tucked that shirt in tight the numbers might disappear far away very tall a tallest they say a strong five six or five seven thick they list him at five eight but he can't be any taller than five six hundred fifty five pounds all right Stabler sets his line are old Campbell the long back behind him intro to the right stables got it on first barbar open over the middle tackled immediately at the 47 yard line and there is one of the marks of Ken Stabler the steady experienced veteran lot of quarterbacks would have panic there lots of time he wiggled free kept this cool and found the open land its first down for Houston on the first play of the second half appeared Stabler might have been up a little bit on that as he goes back a chance for you to watch the very cool kids saver right there that's what you said that he could have panicked there instead just pull the ball down took a step completed the pass Mike barber stapler was 9 for 21 in the first half for only 63 yards and three of those deflections short yardage Campbell was the only man who carried the ball for Houston the entire first half 21 see seven attempts 24 yards for Campbell operating with a single back of the backfill much of the time really a disadvantage no blocking back for you makes it tough to operate certainly one of the things that that Campbell is going to do for gaming once they both get rolling [Music] he was robbing colossal eita Doncaster and offensive line you cannot afford someone to slip deep in coal they have saved a touchdown by grabbing on although at the same moment Stabler was dumping it off because time had run out that's really an interesting play and Houston has put in that they call it their sticky defense an 11-man defensive line you're gambling you can get a quarterback who's not to mobile get him down for a sec number 53 [Music] you might get an easy touchdown the other way the board [Music] this year possession he was energy the official on the scene said he dropped the ball let you watch it from home he gets it on target and it's the first two passes that have been what's the hit there let's looks like that ball was losing good day [Music] [Applause] Breezie [Music] three literally in the staff revisited so Mike Renfro went through his hands although certainly in that case the defense invited very aggressive defensive play a lot to do with [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this is the deepest penetration of the orders Paul by sailor after going 24-yard coming right there Stabler picks it there is nobody to get there but the opposition that [Applause] come please but short yardage maybe three FS [Applause] and state the NFL rookie Defensive Player of the Year 74 and as he develops his rapport with his teammates he's going to force defensive teams to cover all of the field he loves the short passing he's capable of going these [Music] [Applause] a third and four you saw the score Green Bay and Chicago there and threes there to field goals of peace Bob Thomas's they get six and six in the third quarter neither points trailing 70 nothing all 17 points scored in the first four Pittsburgh came out like a rocket right on your helmet you come right down on the field with us get into the action carpenter incensed like he'd been banger Jack Lambert doing a good job of covering carpenter felt like he had been they're playing graph there you go carpenter will be coming right into the center from the right side of your picture watch it here right there a little bump on the hip I think that Jack Lambert was in fact going for the ball Tony French to try for the first today for Houston 30 Dewayne Nielsen - hole and the man was the most accurate kicker in the league last year at home only [Music] seventy-three and thought Brad was in New York all the time he got away to the why [Applause] [Music] it's 17 to 3 here Pittsburgh leading Houston the Oilers have finally scored to the Pittsburgh 14 [Applause] [Applause] thirty yards to get much more Roach's the little guy lost in the pile got a little decent of apparently we like there was a clip in there but difficult to see right there number 73 on the back of workers but what a great save he was off running the number three position four yards don't forget following the game fans NBC Sports continues it's exciting coverage of NFL football second game of our doubleheader most of the also Baltimore the gin Oakland Kansas City and San Diego Seattle so stay tuned NBC Sports we bring you the second half [Applause] [Music] the penalty because that will give at the 43 in the four-man rush trying to get some pressure on still unable to do it getting excellent protection for his offensive lineman Steve Corsa number 77 52 Mike Webster look like a little bit of an early tap there by the [Music] [Applause] give them a first down Bradshaw has a BA where our defense needs to tighten here look like a little fire coming into the office for a swan the Steelers the first at the 43-yard line he's at to the 46 that would appear to be three yards now as past healer although he's been going back and forth or by the ball back at the 45 get one or two yards hesitant this is like one of those TV suspense thrillers you've got to wonder when the Hammers going to fall there is brakes it may be a blanket with a good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] like it don't like it in this case [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this year in the preseason [Music] [Applause] 28 yard line Harris past Taylor short game number three spot for 32 cents five pic32 in high school because Jim Brown he was the man we all wanted to wear 32 College OJ Simpson just fortified my feelings and now he belongs with him he said I had no idea that wasn't a dream I never thought I'd be Franco would pass very he's a very unassuming man he what a nice point you're exactly right that's the way he does his record break [Music] slices one to the 43 and a lateral bounce out gets a break on a rare shirt kick by Craig never seen him kick the ball [Music] short 28-yard kick position is 43 updates to the wavelet leading 20 to 3 returns have taken c14 lead again 22:3 grove and hitting morgan a 67 yard bomb handle yes he does white you [Applause] what you wanna throw it white shoes Johnson he was ahead of the defender he stopped and came back watch it yourself here you see Campbell he's lifted the ball as if he wants this roll but he can tell a white chooses covered a very fine defensive play except for the fact that why she's dead behind and then took the duck the ball and showed us some of the speed that made him the most feared special teamer in the NFL a few years back and how many times did we see that he's been processed any one of the early goodbye Frisch so suddenly [Applause] with 7 minutes and 58 seconds left in the third quarter with a little this Morgan was in the end zone for New England so it was girl Campbell hitting white shoes Johnson here in Pittsburgh no question that this is a shocker the first pass that Campbell has thrown in this professional career and it goes for a touch and it goes to someone who is equally happy white shoes Johnson Houston kicks it off Larry Anderson was hurt on that steel bell returning this kick [Applause] taking it into the enzone the man turn about the first quarter Houston comes out gets a field goal [Applause] number 81 we jump [Music] [Music] [Applause] 22 Philips team looking for a tiny touch complete and what a save intended for white shoes Johnson I always said that this Euler team quit they proved that last year they came a hard way through the through the playoffs as a wild-card certainly came through their frustration of the first half to get right over the middle and a flag down Johnson - ribbets these as Pittsburgh put on the full rush 7:37 left enough game that seemed hopeless early for the Houston Oilers has turned around patience is a virtue and quality certainly does surface motion 86 [Music] forty-seven [Music] although is that thrown as a person throw those kind of passes in high school we just got word that he actually threw three of those three touchdown passes as a high school right so I guess he you know [Applause] and drop that one and he's down to the 12 yard line first I believe short by yar Jack Lambert may their tax San Francisco leads New Orleans 22:7 in the third quarter 49ers much improved George Hitler in Hawaii if we were trying to get a good definition for the word fear I think it might be playing 180 pounds and seeing Earl Campbell catch the football all by himself in the secondary and realizing that you were the only one between her okay and pulling the heme stone no thank you that'll put you in the whirlpool is a first down for the Oilers at the 11-yard a stapler and Houston counting most what time touchdown let's pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network WJ a CTV Johnstown [Applause] Pittsburgh 17 the first water a chance [Applause] the Steelers doing everything right and seemingly getting all the breaks moved into a 17 nothing first quarter lead the Oilers who had a miserable first half drop no less than eight passes have come back in the third quarter to score 10 in their yard and a half away from tying the game what a fine run by Earl Campbell showing you the quickness and the speed and LD flag down as they use the little reverse and Rob carpenter on it for the football but a whistle before the snap we have oil you get down to that one-yard line you don't want to walk back those are such tough yards down inside that 10 yard line the whole strategy instead of being yard now it's second down and almost six for a first down more than six for a touchdown [Applause] leave [Applause] maybe the yard and a Kaster showing some power as he got a couple extra yard possible to get the first down here without getting that touchdown as Houston is going to have a third they mark it right at the one-yard line [Music] sar incentive the one they're gonna measure it while they bring in the chains other action say blueish now Leeds New York 2117 Ottis Anderson 24-yard run and it's Minnesota 21 Atlanta 6 Tommy Kramer's thrown three touchdown passes for the Vikings recapping this one as they measure in the first quarter first play of the new season Larry Anderson returned the opening kickoff 63 yards for Pittsburgh and shortly thereafter Bradshaw hit Sidney Thornton for 29 yard touchdown pass interception by blunt but the Steelers unable to capitalize eventually this score on a 12 play March as Franco Harris pulled over from one yard to make it 14 nothing another Blount interception and a 27 yard field goal by Matt Barr ensued to make it 17 nothing Houston struggled and that's being kind the first half but not so here in the third quarter as they've come on took the kickoff to start the second half by frische 31 yards the white cheers Johnson [Applause] you watch two separate I guess you roll the dice watch that ball pop out again an indication of the timing exist between Kenny Stabler his and his receivers did not get the handoff they're great first and goal it is a test three behemoths six three two seventy you know Campbell certainly came through that carry into the did you hear how quiet ago here to see phew oiler fans and there was a ripple over there and a Washington [Music] oh boy Houston that would even the game at 17 [Music] so quickly by Gifford Nielsen as the 21 seconds left in the third quarter 17 Pittsburgh 17 and here at Three Rivers Stadium Pittsburgh one yard tie the game at 17 and the kickoff is sure immediately the 27-yard line forty-four Frankford he was the 11th round out of [Applause] 58 yards see boys be four seconds [Applause] for Andy Dora 69 [Applause] Campbell is scored on the ground go pass for a touchdown they would be a pass going in by stammering Cosima from the right corner [Music] very often the man who makes the tackle may not be responsible for the time on that last play number 52 Brazil filled very quickly had to sacrifice his body but forced Franco Harris so deep that the play had to go back behind the line hysterical to come up and force him out of bounds for the loss I want a team that must have been at Jackson State Walter Payton Robert Brazil and Vernon Perry and some great players for the end of the Steve heads for Houston [Applause] Pittsburgh code the biggest improvement Houston team in the last year came in their advanced rushing ability in their secondary especially in previous situations more effectively you saw it right there pressure on the quarterback got a clicking situation [Applause] [Music] [Music] well the adults are playing their favorite game Lee [Music] three rivers the biggest crowd ever to see of any kind over 54 17 points in the third the Steelers from the 34 candle braixen [Applause] the 38-yard line Michel the torpedo South Carol to make the tackle it'll be second and six don't forget Tuesday night here on NBC major league baseball boy the pennant fever ran hot especially in the National League six teams fighting to get into the playoffs there's four of them LA and Houston will battle or you'll see Pittsburgh and Philadelphia that's Tuesday night 8 o'clock Eastern Time check your local listings for the game and time in your area you know they planned that primetime baseball months and months ago before the baseball season began what great foresight in a red hot pennant year you'll see that fine baseball action Tuesday night on NBC Mike Renfro 82 injured on that last play a serious one new year ankle it might possibly be a cramp that's certainly what you'd hope for the way he's walking off to maybe that and he is walking well enough that I think maybe that's what it is the way he had his foot up and looked like that camp muscle they just the long training camp their emotional and this is an emotional team is replaced in he's to the right [Applause] until they got beyond the arts dick we talked early about staplers he's caught everything thrown at it that means so much to roll Campbell and it means so much to these Houston Oilers ifs Tabor were less confident as a quarterback if he weren't the smart leader that he is he didn't left her all Campbell quick the blacksmith over there it's to Campbell [Applause] eleventh year he has 42 interceptions control appears to be okay ray Renfro the former graded one of those plays that really doesn't end up getting hear much about it teaches a lesson in the ability of stabler to get the ball off quickly and to pick his receivers effectively certainly without a fine defensive play carpenter been able to elude the defense he back up on him he might have had a chance to get away to pick up the injured Steeler it's 51 Lauren tales from the University of California seems to be alright today is that an opportunity to play this year because of an injury to dirt Winston I liked it in there [Music] [Applause] secondhand statistics we talked about two different games [Applause] played at the 40th Pittsburgh [Applause] [Music] was a leg cramp you had speculated for Renfro he's okay Giants much-maligned after their summer performance against st. Louis 3121 Joel Santa's throne [Applause] Ford and that's going to be close to a first down to measure barbar Louisiana Tech same school and graduated Terry Bradshaw 11 it's gonna be close enough for a measurement he doesn't make it Tom Phillips didn't think he had a good spot from his reaction he has the momentum with a tie game do you kick it try to ten Pittsburgh well let's first see whether or not he made it maybe academic it's short Dave Lee wants to stay on the field favored like to call it as five making the percentage call making a percentage call I'm armed for that you got to be smart you got to be a smart football player as well as a gutty football player and sometimes being smart dictates that you you make the percentage call and then talk to the official about the way he's spotted the ball he's gonna wear out the tops of his ears he keeps pressing that head down Bartkowski two chickens of 46 [Music] [Applause] very very nice fun somebody get down Oh for usin a kick to hard firstly wanted to or tries to do in that situation hangs it very high gets his people down they'd like to trap it but the ball just took one hard kick and rolled into the so 1717 the score here in Pittsburgh with 306 remaining in the third quarter other scores New England 27 Cleveland [Music] [Applause] [Applause] was on and when you blitz the quarterback minecraft you better get to it because puts the pressure on the defensive backs Brazil hell the ball floated drop to those short [Music] 25 yard game the first down at the 45 3121 enjoy third-quarter Minnesota 21 Atlanta third-quarter San Francisco 20 New Orleans Thursday fourth-quarter Bears of Green Bay tied at six [Applause] stealer sign he's the only man of you he looked from the waist down look at the hips and the thighs of four fairies [Applause] there's another family down the field Perry involved in that skirmish on the sideline to play before this one he'd had an altercation at the line of scrimmage and often losing your temper and retaliating results in the we'll still discussing riah course easily identify because he wears the black cap does that mean he's a bad guy I think to most players [Music] [Applause] number 52 the illustration of the importance of keeping their temper and maintaining and controlling their emotions Perry not made that very silly maneuver on the outside that a marched off penalty against the Pittsburgh Steelers sit down a better chance there to an intersection before [Applause] [Applause] [Music] or Bradshaw here they go [Applause] we've got somebody on the ground dr. doom the Steelers I think you can always tell they can always tell what the attitude of that coach is by the amount of space that the players are giving them when nose starts to fume everybody this guy like that baseball dugout the management one and all the first at 15 46 Franco on a draw [Applause] [Music] [Applause] number three position old check goal 49 the air eight straight playoffs of Pittsburgh goes to the playoffs this year it'll be at all they'll record lastly honorary doctorate [Applause] [Applause] nobody over there to cover the receiver makes another big catch here we call it he caught the first touchdown pass [Music] [Applause] last year [Music] the Three Rivers corral judgment and it appeared that the mean sentence in the first quarter when Pittsburgh led 17 nothing no score in the second and then the came back was 17 of their own Steelers have the ball second 24 in a tie game 17th Bradshaw Authority read well by the heart short yardage at the 22 it'll be third down throw backer and mom goes through no estate the strongest the Oilers 65 and 280 title that he is rested from really come on that play the oiler defense doing a little window dressing coming up faking the Blitz forcing Bradshaw inaudible as it was they dropped back to the regular defense see if they can get a rush here everyone in the pattern Bradshaw still protected well [Applause] [Applause] I think they've flown right here in France [Applause] from Michigan 6 2 & 2 if Thornton [Applause] most leaning forward pass play reception bradshaw rushed quite aggressively being conscious of there are still what [Music] that's the kind of concentration that he has there [Music] years ago closest healers came to not getting Bradshaw remember was a coin flip with [Applause] remember that the Oilers down in this same situation Hawthorne 27 anticipate they'll take the penalty because [Music] [Applause] [Applause] here's a try for point [Applause] [Music] first touchdown in two years on the ground a little quarterback draw at 24 17 Pittsburgh a short kick taken by carpenter at the 8 [Applause] to the 38 maybe the 31 the 30-yard line the Oilers buh-bye Donnie shell stapler goes into the huddle 17 435 130 yards New England pounding Cleveland 34 2 3 Brogan Hasselbeck 17 yards a touchdown some critics in the preseason with playing big today Cincinnati and Tampa Bay 12 to 10 the score Cincinnati has taken the lead on a safety and then came right back to get a touchdown Thompson to Ross three yard the Bengals pulled ahead by two meanwhile at San Francisco 23 New Orleans 20 as the Saints tightened that one in the fourth quarter there plenty of time in the fourth quarter over 12 minutes remaining and I'll have to kick it over again have to come back and kick the ball again from the 30-yard line so I'm gonna get off a little quick down there side against the kicking team cause as they'll have a chance to get a better return the ball kicked short they did not have much of a return on it let's see what they can do with this [Applause] [Applause] [Music] conference stars roaches from A&M Lauren from Baylor we've got a holding [Applause] [Music] instead of getting a chance to upgrade their field position back inside their 20-yard line that's what you give him against sometimes things that turn here in a second he's got a couple forty-five receiving team [Music] first in town Houston [Music] [Applause] get away from solid linebacker again another example depths of the stealer it says hey has to come off the bench for Chuck Noll and an injury on the play trying to block for fire the one thing that the soiler team does not have as he said because his the offensive line there they're very shallow they're defensive secondary they're relatively shallow linebacking there what step there I'm Philips of course concerned whatever one of those players go down the injured Weiler will that report Earl Campbell is the man down so no wonder it's drawn a crowd of concern so a time out here in Pittsburgh it is 2417 Steelers 12 minutes to play Earl Campbell helped off the field on the sidelines here's the BOK campbell today interestingly he has passed for more yardage than he seven yards passing 45 Shila birth down to a second and a long one and there is the first down as Tim Wilson plow straight ahead first time anyone other than Campbell has rushed the football for Houston today other stores Buffalo weights Miami set the lakes passive for yard 31:28 the Giants at st. Louis ding-dong game heart to Marsh the ball the Cardinal one-twenty Minnesota Bartkowski the Jackson [Applause] that's the first time we've seen the i-formation for you formations they were going to throw gets pressure it has nowhere to go Steve Bassett on top job of breaking loose played a great deal at that left guard a very important way than the plans of the Houston Oilers issue you recorded by yourself [Music] [Applause] get through there and Barber is able to get up and fall for two more yards as there was no defensive contact day 28 yard line so they get back about ten of that as barber picks up his fifth catch 44 yards indeed stabler likes to go to his tight end New England 34 Cleveland 10 as Brian Sipe who time for most touchdowns in the league last year hits Dave Logan [Applause] the white shoes [Applause] [Applause] great speed does have a great sense of where the opening in the pocket armed delivery he didn't ever get that arm above his shoulder white shoes Johnson an excellent job at kissing that football [Applause] [Music] Steelers lead by seven first of another big season sixteen regular season the playoffs [Music] just get it away [Music] Robert Brazil 52 and you see number 61 in your picture Tyrone McGriff the rookies the guy we talked about last band picked in the draft the option blocker the uncovered man what a nasty task to have as your first play getting output a Doctor Doom who just came with destruction on his mind and talked about the depth Merlin Olsen the one place where they are dolphin possession there but it might be my 4-step to play a rookie so I think I really don't want it seems like whatever they've cut a veteran and then kept a rookie they've had problems immediately after Larry Brown obey the air you might have thought it would have been the end you saw the score San Francisco once leading 22 7 the Saints have rallied to tie 23 [Applause] 48 JC Wilson 33 for Houston and checking with the Pittsburgh bench for a penny who was the starter at that left guard position is out a possible concussion that's the reason the young rookie McGriff is in there they kept two rookie guards for Griffin and Wolseley and they're very high on both of them I think they both have the potential to be players but you apprentice here with the Pittsburgh Steelers before you play and they want you to apprentice at least for a couple years unless you're just simply too outstanding keep out of the lineup have to put you in there so you're ready [Music] [Applause] a very acrobatic operating to just Kix the extra point [Applause] to the lab the Obol sedative with that 27-yard punt return three plays 55 yards touchdown Pittsburgh a 50-yard throw Bradshaw escaping from Andy Dora showing his ability and then threw it up for grabs and what is up there hi John Stallworth doesn't miss me cut sound just like reaching up high no one can get that big red apple up there the touchdown for football to follow here on NBC the second half of our doubleheader [Applause] the back of one of your opponents say on the back of one of your town Levi to get leverage the blocka kick and that's what the call was leverage used by used to trying to get a little at boost the block the extra point 20 you'll breathe a little easier though a training camp ever got boring for it they blur again as you pointed out little delicate differences that is the season wears on that pass becomes completely that passed by the way was in the air about 4045 yards perhaps that might be a reminder to the Steelers and other teams that Stabler can indeed throw the ball deep and had caster kept that one in his hands it certainly was although a difficult catch a catchable ball would have made a big difference here [Applause] six [Applause] to tighten this year for Houston driver last year b27 officially I think I know where I could call him tomorrow in the training room he's taken some real hits there too [Music] dealer defense tighten the noose leading 3117 carpenter in motion who Houston planning team [Applause] [Music] we're in high school would run 200 yards just to get 20 socha how time does change a lot of things including physique high school coach said in those days [Music] [Music] please now fair catch 25-yard 34:10 New England leap 34:17 no New England leading Cleveland 17-7 Buffalo trying to surprise Miami feel long drought for the bills against dolphins Cincinnati on a safety and ensuing touchdown in the second half winning 12:10 against Tampa Bay Giants by 10 against st. Louis by a point over Atlanta says rally to tie the 49ers breathe [Music] the Steelers with just seven minutes left appear to be the giant st. Louis 3835 in the pitchers battle in st. Loup the last door Jim Hart to Pat Tilly 42 yards still out 525 left in that game a view of at the radisson say hey MPC you do a great job with the other scores we like game watching would give us the other scores we're pleased you're enjoying that we're going to follow that for mall of 1980 Steelers seemingly uh [Applause] with that last with that kind of an edge they'd love to eat some of that clock obviously don't want to take a risk they've got themselves in trouble with Brad Chuck can afford to be a little conservative although we've seen him do this while you two sleep a little bit and then throw an 80 yarder zipping down the field appears that they are becoming a little conservative but Jesse Baker number 75 from Jacksonville state of Alabama he left the oil fifteen and a half sacks last year he'll be teeing off fresh on this third [Music] they almost got between those two big guys Stan's rude and her home [Music] big hook got him 49ers have moved back in front by three Wersching a 37-yard field goal there's less than four minutes remaining in that game in New Orleans Baker says he wants to get 20 sacks this year certainly or a capable young man although they're almost as excited maybe even more excited likes [Applause] reversal on the far side but Robin Cole made the big play that term when you talk about this 52 yard punt six yard return roaches they're gonna love him with you Simone you got a feeling he's going to give them a lot of exciting return I think you know one of the big play people the leader of this Pittsburgh Joe Greene down on the field locker room before the game weather [Applause] stabler [Applause] Johnson flying catch in traffic at the 46 of the Steelers flag JT Thomas there for Pittsburgh 26 yard game white shoes Johnson came into the locker room to say hello to Joe he said Joe can you get me a coca-cola commercial I was stood up and look down at him he said yeah kid you're about the right side it was the boy what a fine catch by Billy white shoes Johnson and how happy they are to have him back he is really [Music] the 46 of Pittsburgh 355 14 after carrying a welcome to the 38 yard line and close to another first down tabes made the stop first final of the new season but that isn't a final Atlanta lead 23:21 but we do have a final buffalo 17 Miami seven the Buffalo Bills so Chuck Knox have finally beaten Miami factor in that Eastern Division that's really up for grabs we're at overtime in Green Bay's affairs to the 27-yard the clock continues to run 3:05 real [Music] let's pause briefly for station identification this is the NBC television network WJ CTV Johnstown in ken burgin Merlin Olsen Three Rivers Stadium Pittsburgh the Steelers came out as if they're still playing in that Super Bowl was 17 points in the first quarter nothing for Houston the first half finally the [Music] romantic [Applause] [Applause] did not throw a good pass did not see Donny waited for I decided let's look at their receiver as he cuts inside right here right side of your picture Donnie she'll just stepping in front of that's the kind of safety play the kind of defensive so well [Applause] watch it down to the two minute [Applause] [Music] they gotta be celebrating in Buffalo they've been hungry for that victory over Miami and there stabler intercepted by 31 shell in the 67 yard return burg stealers no the entire country sang can anyone beat Pittsburgh Gilly will they falter [Music] we could drop these to those first two and we could still do the job [Applause] [Music] answer your question even to a team as deep as there this year at the season it's possible because of a home-and-home schedule Houston who's there it's very early that's a long season Houston surely the way they rally from the game of that third telecast from Pittsburgh directed by Ted Nathanson technical director William Tobey associate producer Michael Hadley associate director Brandywine McKinley Kayson personality [Music] the Steelers who lead 3117 with only 45 [Applause] [Music] they've supported Pittsburgh a lot of folks last year as you watch some people jam the until midnight for the return of the orders to share them to thank you're gonna get [Applause] [Applause] [Music] with Bradshaw leading his team to fourth-quarter touchdowns and the victory
