just looked at him over the years the consistency and he'll show it to you right in his record book we're all working in the 8th took something off of that one got it in for a strike [Music] the Baltimore Orioles slowed down the Angels Baltimore beat California nine to one Jim Palmer give him a lead like that is like putting money in the bank say good night off-speed again but inside Palmer may not be the best pitcher in that league but he's in the top two [Music] they've got a lefty throwing in their bullpen it's Schultz and we're going to start getting some action in our bullpen because Steve Nicosia is walking down that way did he go yes he did [Music] thankfully happy for that girl one ball and two strikes Scott's a two-hit Simmons two hits reached two hits they have a total of nine Parker and Foley and I'd have had two apiece for us but floating that screws yep there he and Romo didn't like what that ball did she says give me another one I'll see if it feels better Enrique he understands just as much as he wants to understand but he knows what I was doing with that sign that about three and two [Music] the payoff pitchers do on Simmons as he leads off in the Cardinal eighth against Romo we have used Blyleven and Bibby before Romo Bibby did an excellent job bouncer one away got away with a high scruple made a mistake on Simmons and got away with it that bring up George Hendrick had a base hit in the second inning since that has popped up strike down Kendrick Blyleven really didn't pitch that badly but he'd really made a couple of mistakes he made one on Simmons in the fourth that was a long ball and he made one on Forsch in that same inning after he had struck out Tyson looked like he had a chance to get out of the inning and let force hurt him in fact knocked him out of the game well that's the only thing that really hurt her tonight I thought he had good stuff and he's very determined and he's just pretty pressing a little bit right now and so conscious of not making a mistake that he ends up making one ball and no strikes on George Hendrick day Norwich he'll be next hey there's a strike and it's 1 & 1 he's going to make somebody pay before the year is over with I'm sure that and before Memorial Day would help one ball one strike and one out he gave up the little crossfire step Romo throws about everything from every place [Music] I think that'd be one of his weapons and being effective but a hitter just can't really guess with him at much especially the right-handed hitters I think he can intimidate right-handed hitters a little bit from throwing so many positions and you never can pick up the ball early 1 2 pitch same type of delivery and a just check swing foul keeps Hendrick up bird George don't like them side wielding at him anyway [Music] one ball and two strikes [Music] and Rick with a close stance - until we asked for help but the first place umpire said he didn't go out and nobody on Teddy Simmons might be saying well then why me two balls two strikes at Oromo ready foul down the left side and the fans hoping it'll bounce up for a souvenir but it didn't Timperley is he going to make some friends or not throws it down toward our bullpen he'll let somebody else do it that's closer to the stand where it isn't so obvious two balls and two strikes hendrik there number five hitter said three hits in the first two games whoa was that close well mo not wanted to call they didn't get it either now it's fall right [Music] Chuck Tanner talking down there with Harvey Haddix and Almine Scheck and Bob Skinner they wanted that call alright a payoff do and Romo ready to bring it [Music] he is [Music] face it to the base of effects the second of three major hit off Romo and relief and the tenth Cardinal hit in the game now he put it in the gap and here it is we cannot see the pitch but even though the count was three and two you just can't get the Henry as good a hitter as he is a real good pitch to hit and we gave in to him gave him a good fastball to hit and he just knocked it right in the gap so now the pressure is definitely on Romo because they got a runner at third with one out and he's trying to protect a one-run difference we're getting our bullpen busy and it's Jackson a lefty and to call the is the right-hander and they've still got Schultz working in their bullpen so it's that kind of a game isn't it one run difference again goes to get a record late of that Cardinals have four runs and 10 hits the Pirates three runs in seven hits and Romo now is got to make that screwball work for him here with this left-hand batter up there either getting to pop it up or strike him out and take away that sacrifice fly possibility if they get another run here that's a heck of a lot difference when we go to the ninth fouled off [Music] if you keep it at 4-3 well you get that leadoff batter on it it makes the guy out on the mound pitch entirely differently than if he's got a two-run lead well he can afford with the two-run lead he can afford to challenge each hitter until someone has gets on base whereas if it's a one-run lead he can't afford you know to try and overpower somebody because one swing in the bat can tie the ballgame all right now Romo looking in runner at third is Hendrick there's one out a triple put Hendrick their infield is up all the way around [Music] [Music] it's his second straight met and the records do indeed go back to a two-run advantage it's a 5 to 3 game that's going to bring up Kenny Reitz single double in a bounce out Griet says always is a tough out for us then I get a runner looks like mumphrey mean he can motor Humphrey is running for origin then all probability will be the fellow to stay in the game [Applause] almost going to have to keep an eye on him because he can really move out of there [Music] and REITs with a single and a double in a bounce out two hits tonight three hits in the series he's driven in six runs against us in the six games Floyd would hit him right back [Music] we all know that Romo stop throwing out a because buddy [Music] Chuck Tanner's on his way and no lading it out it just bore in on him well Kenny was hoping that ball would not sail in joint but as you saw he saw the ball coming out even just a toe it's just a question of where it's going to hit me now Oberkfell is due and we've already motioned that Jackson's going to be brought in here so Romo gave up a triple and a single and then hit a batter and we're going to bring in our fourth pitcher and it will be grant Jackson Cardinals put it up to a two-run lead again here comes buck Jackson he analyzed and he's been our most effective pitcher Jackson ten boy is going to go as the managerial wheels start to spin he's going to send up Roger freed to bat for Oberkfell and Mike Phillips utility infielders gone down to their bullpen area to loosen and he would then replace over fell at second base when we go to the ninth inning but we've got some work to do before then we've got to shut the door and we've got to shut it now grant Jackson for the year is coming on for the 10th time what window losses he has the only three saves with our staff has picked up an excellent er a of 174 [Music] well [Music] following Blyleven Vivian Romo Romo worked an inning and a third gave up three hits good for a run in the two men honor his responsibilities that's mumphrey the pinch runner for orange at second base greets at first and the batter is Roger freed trees batting 167 he's at one homer for RBIs that homers his only hit in six advanced go free biting for over 12 grant Jackson had a job to do - Colby is throwing in the bullpen Cardinals are leading five to three they're not hit the Bucks 11 to 7 they put some insurance on the board here in the bottom of the 8th inning did not appear in last night's one-run victory for the Cardinals Freed's against us for the year both in pinch-hitting roles ole for too one ball one strike Roger free he's had to play his way back to the big leagues and actually got a new lease on life when the Cardinals brought him back that's a ball the manager that was fired about a year ago the guy who really gave him the opportunity to come back and stay work sire two can play the outfield or first base right hand pinch hitter we had three trunks four legs this guy [Music] he's one of those guys who doesn't think anything's funny especially when one of his own pitchers in batting practice throws one too close there's a high just slide back into about the third row but boy builders been playing over there tonight you can't give up on it he might dive in there and get that food he's been over in there once tonight I had waiting for everybody to get back in place the Cardinals have two men on pinch runner mumphrey at second greets at first there's one out or running Xin Jackson fakes the throw to second but he'll throw back [Music] and it's amazing the number of people that think that's a ball a lot of votes for what don't have to throw back there runners going struck him out throw to third hey that's a double dip yes sir read strikes out perfect throw to garner 2nd DoublePlay we've gotten with a strikeout involved in this game for that throw was right down on the bag I say hot it's really just great one run two hits no errors one left now we go to the ninth the Buccos bats the rebel they are trailing it's the Cardinals five of the Pirates three [Music] hey that's me willie stargell for that grand slam really very badly in fact she's gonna make your day when you join the pirate pepsi fan club you'll get one genuine pod pepsi sport bag and stickers and six tickets to pirate games up to a twenty two dollar value for only three dollars to join you can get details at pepsi displays in participating stores and they made me captain to the fan club you they made me captain can I start over he's what morning is all about bringing our time to wake up all about a full coffee it's time to start your heart a week from today Saturday May 12th when the Pirates take on the Cincinnati Reds of Three Rivers all youngsters 14 and under who attend the game will receive an official Pirates batting glove absolutely free you won't want to miss that all right boo kovitch as we go to the 9th Rennie Stennett and then it will be Lee lacy the new second baseman is Phillips and mumphrey is the new left fielder and there's Jerry mumphrey in left so the Cardinals look like this on the field Hernandez and Phillips on the right side Templeton REITs on the left and outfield left a right of mumphrey skadam Hendrik Simmons is catching Vuckovich their third pitcher he came on in the eighth inning and blew it with a two run lead as Rennie stun a toad for three will be the batter fire when we wrap it up here it's going to be Bruce Kison he had Silvio Martinez Stennett two four seven in the series lines one to Center for a basin that could be the start of something and that's what the Bucks have got a hope for here it's the second hit of lukovitch it is our eighth hit in the game and Lee lacy will be the pinch-hitter he's batting for Jackson so if we could get Lacey on and get the top of the owner up that's got to be the goal here trailing five to three minded powell donor bullpen where Eddie Woodson is throwing Lacey last night played in the game in left field and went hole for three and against Cardinal pitching for the air Oh double L is whole for full Lee lacy batting in the pinch-hitters row with stented at first well outside a ball and lacy for the year batting 200 is 5 for 25 two of his five hits have been triples he's driven in three runs definite inside corners got at the breaking pitch way inside got enough of the corner to get in front of we see one ball and two strikes [Music] granny's stunted at first we've been out hit 11 to 8 I've scored 5 to 3 were in the ninth inning bouncer through the hole nobody out all right now we've got the top of the order up here that's the third hit off Vuckovich the ninth pirate hit in the game and Omar Moreno who's gone over for waiting for Hernandez Simmons and Vukovich to talk things over here Omar Moreno has bounced out three times and flied to Center he's 1 for 8 in the series and now Phillips comes in he wants to talk a bit with Luca they are Phillips is probably coming in to check what sign they're using weatherman on second base because it's the first time he's been out there with anybody on second base and they're just trying to get their whole strategy all mapped out they don't want mistakes right here maybe do basically put the ball in the air they want somebody to be there that's right add both bullpens are busy again and out of the mound Boo kovitch facing Omar Moreno and Foley and Parker and would the runners at first and second and nobody out let's see what they've got on for Omar here Hernandez and Reitz think the bunt is on he's swinging away knee hits it right at the shortstop going to suck at the ball five - for his play she's in front of two he swore to drop that ball yes I know Annie for fielder's choice for Omar Annie for allowing the run to score that is the second Cardinal error it's the first one that's hurt him now we're definitely in business because it's a one-run game we've got two baserunners and there's nobody out and as you saw you pump that ball right out of him we really got a break there well Phillips dropped the ball actually before Lacey got to the bag but he just went ahead and made sure that he couldn't pick the ball up and that enabled ready to score that was heads-up play by Lee Lacey nice going Lee well there was a case of a ball being hit back so sharply the Phillips was a little late getting to the bag and Templeton kind of waiting for him gave him a little lollipop throw really he didn't zip it for him temple now there is a little putt to the first baseman the only play is to go back to Phillips covering at first Tim Foley did his job he gets lazy up to third Moreno's at second it's a 3/4 sack and who he got coming from the Cobra that's the first out of the inning now a fly ball can tie it in a basehead can give you a lead we have not right in his game Parker has had a double a walk a double and a fielder's choice he's 2 for 3 and now they're going to they're going to put him on and pitch to Milner they're not there as much as saying here even with the base open they're also saying we're not going to let a superstar beat us we've got a left-hand batter on deck and the batter who's been our hottest hitter against the Cardinals but they're setting up the situation here where they can come home with a ball hit on the infield cuz now they'll make the horse play possible at the plate or if the ball is hit to an infielder that's having to dive around out there he might have a play of second than the otherwise might not have so in this situation you figure of all the managers going they would call for the same strategy here well not only that Milo but this enables Parker's run not to really mean all that much of course every run the we score is another one that they have to score but the winning run is on second base the tying run on third so not only do they set up all of horse outs in a possible DoublePlay ball but his run doesn't mean that much more than Anissa - a time to play and it also means that shoulders come on to face John Milner so the two managers here are really spinning their wheels against one another trying to make all the moves count and Schultz who pits so well against us last night the best he's looked against us this year well that's for sure last night probably had his best stuff that he's had all year he was really throwing hard had a couple of days rested and was just just challenging us Schultz one-on-one been in ten ballgame so far 19.1 innings pitched he's got a four point six six CRA but the thing that I noticed about Schultz is it easy given a five home runs and John Milner has had one of them so maybe we got a shot to hit the grand salami right here and if that isn't forthcoming I'll settle for a nice base here oh yes and as we look out we've got a bucko on every face lacy third Moreno's second Parker first base you've got some speed on the basis of any kind of an extra-base hit would probably give you a chance to score a flock of them here too because you know lacy coming from thirds going to get there easily Moreno can run and Parker runs exceptionally well for a big man well I don't I don't know if I'd want to be the third base ghost trying to hold Parker up in case it was a long single you got to be quite a man to hold him up alright Milner now he's gonna take a long look at Schultz out there what are your possibilities here a flyball with some depth ties it for you base hit can give you the lead play extra base you might get two or three home and of course John Milner who has had one hit tonight a single in the eighth inning drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth he has eight of his runs batted in this year against the Cardinals that's a pretty good percentage yes it is first baseman John Milner so John Milner facing bloody Schultz and the bags are loaded with bucks there's a lot of pirate gold out there right now overnight we were like what's mine some oh yes sir we'll go from a full lined up against Milner with the bases loaded he got a figure that balls going to be in the strike zone somewhere and he took his rip to me he knows it again just like last night Lacey third Moreno's suckin Parker at first there's only one out and here we are with our best opportunity really in the series to do something big trailing five to four in the ninth inning [Music] they're waiting on Schultz he just gonna take a token glance over to third now he's going to move off Tilly's are off in front of the Dodgers three to nothing to get those three runs off Messersmith he's finding out a comeback as the Dodgers not all he thought it was going to be Ruth's man's got a lead he'll be tough out there with a three to nothing lead here's the pitch Powell here below of Schultz atop the front of Milner two strikes Mura and the Padres have a three to nothing lead against Steve Rogers in the Expos in the second inning in San Diego those are the only two games going in our league and in the eighth inning in Texas White Sox lead the Rangers seven to five that's the only game going in the America we've given you all the other scores at least three or four times here tonight for the particulars and all those scores again they'll happen for you on the sports on Eyewitness News but right here we're looking for Milner to get us back in this thing ocean fish they shot the third he's got to come home now go to first no [Music] happening to double play ball definitely hit the Kenny reach there was no doubt about the ball one hopper and he said oops I thought there were two out was going to go to first then he was going to come home he due to ball the first safe at first and boy that that's surprising with a veteran ball that Moroccan said the game was because after he went off that play if the platon didn't get the double play I anticipated that is not a run that scored that was a forced play which they did which they set it up that's why they walked Carter to begin with and if you think Kenny Boyer isn't thinking almost every pitch here he's going to his bullpen yet again it's still a five to four Cardinal lead so Kenny Boyer is going to his bullpen and he's bringing in man-mountain Dean here reminder we can't blame you for routing we went that run family didn't that's a case of doing it with your heart and not your head so Schultz who work till only the one man [Music] and the basis and parser is still loaded the forest play at the plate was the only play that they were able to get and that went 5 2 2 and willie stargell has come out since they're going to the right-hander and Bruno is the guy they brought on there are two away and you talk about coming down to cases again we are there willie stargell and we've known for three or four days that when we came to st. louis that he would be available only as a pinch-hitter going to be called upon to do just that and they were really hoping that they wouldn't have to do that with him in this series Nellie because every time he does something to that hip which is so badly swollen and inflamed it just means it sets him back that much more and you would like not to use him because even when he swings it strain sir well this is this is the situation that they didn't want to have to use Willie if at all possible but we can't play for tomorrow and we can't play for next week we need to win some ball games to get ourselves out of the basement get some momentum going and so Willie says hey if you got to use me use me we'll take care of tomorrow when it comes all right he will bat with the bases loaded against the right-hander Bruno [Music] Bruno is one and one know saves been in well this is his 12th appearance already so they've been using 13 and 2/3 innings er a of 395 we're still a run short even on my scorecard so Stargell bats were the teammate on every base Moreno third Parker second Milner first so the captain he's up there with a shin guard on he doesn't want another foul off of that thing he's got enough trouble of a hip that's killing him but he's up here now against Bruno and we've come down doing out inside you could even tell there that it was hard for him to get out of the way of the inside pitch kick the ball away from him something that he can extend on and use his arms for the power instead of having to move his hips Giovanni 321 four homers 14 runs batted in bases loaded two down ninth inning [Music] Simmons going out to talk to Bruno [Music] Bruno so far at 13 2/3 innings pitched has walked eight men ensure relief that's a lot for a short reliever to be rocking at he's right here he's behind a bake will so maybe he's going to walk himself into trouble walking path money in short relief you might having not seen him that much you might think that maybe he comes in and has troubled with the first hitter excision well he's fallen behind the first hitter here started with two balls no strikes bases loaded it's up to the captain we've come down to that [Music] run is in now that makes that run of the Cardinals gap in the eighth inning of Romo look big it's the one that has them leading [Music] [Music] No [Music] or maybe down to a slang right [Music] most leading with five runs eleven hits pirates four runs nine hits here it comes ball three [Music] now rest for the wicked' they say [Music] [Music] start two runs are scored and his name of the old sod [Music] going on [Music] Willie said you aren't getting this ball by me too much is on the line I'm going to do the job ball was down and over the plate had to be a strike Ryan that thing into right-field drove in those two big runs and here we got the lead that's keeping five and keaston who's going to pitch tomorrow for his Star Trek Moreno scarred from third with run number five Parker came home with run number six the lead run Milner is at 3rd at a dot with a chance to fatten the goose there ediot has had two hits and three trips driven in a run plus he's had a walk he's the eighth man to bat in the inning three runs were in at six to five pirates eivol one captain Willie now with Tamar rbis has 16 for the year [Music] Stargell against st. Louis that was his first hip and his first RBIs against them because as you recall when we played the Redbirds at home he was injured it was that same hip was his first time to get a chance to deliver against the Cardinals and the old captain did just that mutters first and third two down Bucks have their first lead of the night six to five rival Humphry just coming over slowly and makes the play [Applause] [Music] they got three runs the liquid of course Cardinals run two-out single there was an error on Phillips that helped and we leave a pair so it's a different look and Eddie woods out of the bullpen last night to be asked to come on in slave it her grand gesture gonna hold the buck we go to the bottom of the ninth in st. Louis pirates sixth Cardinals five and Eddie Woodson who pitched well in relief here last night is coming on for the sixth time he's pitched well against the Cardinals ysus where he beat them as a starter he's got one win in one loss in ER a of 360 [Music] and Bruno is gonna back the crowds reacting and I can see why they're trailing by a run and Bruno's gonna bat [Music] brutal [Music] fouled off by piranhas somebody down in the crowd just said nobody ups here but believes this who knows needs a hidden Babe Ruth oh you just missed with a good heart breaking pitch away and it's one on one what sin is the pitcher milder and Stennett on the right side foley and diner on the left Alexander and left Moreno playing a very shallow center and over in the right center here with Bruno batting a little popper down the right side of Milner's and Tony Viner on with leaders on his way boy you just can't fault Milner for anything he's done here tonight he's played it to the hilt but I asked him how he was feeling during the ball game but he said hey you put my name in the lineup I'm gonna play it for you he's demonstrating at the night just look at this he keeps his eye on the ball all the way and that picks up the stance right at the last minute tries to hold himself up put his arms out and seems like he jammed his wrist there momentarily but just what a great effort by Milner well that's the first out in the ninth inning and here is Templeton he's old for 9 in the series including over for tonight and he struck out six times in this series [Applause] [Music] anxiety to pop that ball in his glove just didn't control it but that's a base hit no matter if he comes up with it clean with honey and gets his first hit of the series he gets it off wincing it's the 12th hit for the Cardinals compared to 12 hits for the 10 hits for the Pirates and here's their hottest fat Tony Scott two hits tonight five hits in the series and he's hit a ton this kid he's really been hot for them slider inside ball one puts up with a fastball slider turban a pom ball now Scott's 2 for 4 tonight and he's 5 for 9 in the series [Music] sitting over 340 for the year that's the only play they forced Templeton for diner two stunning you put Scott first baseman Pete her last man at first base with a fielder's choice and here is Hernandez he is also hitless in the series struck out three times tonight while oven got him once Bibby once and Romo once [Music] six to five pirates no matter how hard I tried to make it another way [Music] and the pitch Turin andas is upstairs of all ninth inning now at Texas White Sox leading the Rangers seven to six it's still Padres over Montreal 3 to nothing in the third Billie's over Dodgers three to nothing in the four for updates on those and all the others eyewitness sports we'll have it for you strike one on the swing on Hernandez - Colby throwing in the bullpen just in case Eddie Woodson working on the left-hand batting keith hernandez with scott at first base two away bottom of the ninth inning the Bucs trying to get even and set the stage for a rubber game tomorrow running at first fouled off we got a break because Scott was really out of the chute well I was surprised they didn't run him earlier because with his speed he's got a chance to steal second base but also as well as that on has been throwing I think he's intimidated the runners a little bit and they aren't taking as much Liberty as they have in the past well and Adam Nicosia in this series have shown some really on target arm yes sir one ball two strikes but are not going fouled off still 1 & 2 on Hernandez and the one thing that Eddie Woodson doesn't want to do in a ball game of this type he doesn't want to look at Ted Simmons who's on deck they don't not only doesn't want to look at Ted Simmons but he's got to be careful how he pitches to Hernandez he has to keep in mind that you don't mind so much of if he gets a single but you do not want to give him a pitch that he can Turk out of the park fouled off again one ball two strikes and like I said earlier about Hernandez we've gotten him over eight and here's the kind of a hitter that you just hope he doesn't wake up while you're still in town because one of these days there's our bench anxious the Bucks have battled back with a three-run ninth to go in front for the first time at six to five Scott representing the tying run at first base Woodson with a long look runner not going just outside just fell over backwards they've got to quit II had him struck out that the game was over but we'll have to wait get another pitch any whitson following ply live at Bibby Romo and Jackson the runs on the board belong to Jackson runner going popped up is the replies [Music] [Applause] [Music] just bathing and diner talk about two peas in a pod they were right over the edge of that dugout prayin for it to come back this is also a very important pitch any Winston wants to get Hernandez out with this count 2 & 2 because if they go to 3 & 2 that gets Tony Scott running on the pitch if they hit a long single Tony Scott's got a chance to score and tie this game so Eddy whitson has to fair down and get this guy out on this counter strike son two down as the runner at first takes the lead he's got his biggest lead he's out on the carpet with that front foot he's going [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] no Aris at a man left so it was uphill battle and I'll tell you something this was the kind of a game that will tie your stomach and not sir and I'm going to tell you something else this is the game that just might give your club enough of a lift now with key sand going tomorrow against the guy who's a little bit erratic like Martinez that this win might even be bigger than the final score indicates well this is going to give him give us some momentum a mitoan I think it's going to give our hitters a lift to because they got take up the hits tonight when it counted drove in those runs have we've been missing and by golly I think they're going in there tomorrow with a lot of momentum and a lot of enthusiasm well on the come-from-behind win gives you a tonic to the total board looks like this 6:10 and OH for the Bucs the winner is Jackson and for the losing Cardinals 5:12 and 2 and one of their errors hurt it helped us get that three-run inning that wanted the winner Jackson to and oh the loser Vuckovich 2 & 2 it's funny how a worm turns who kovitch who came out of the pen throwing looked like he was unbeatable and he ends up as the losing pitcher and the winning RBI belongs to the captain captain Willie Stargell and whitson earns the save and he gets the congratulations from head on and that wraps up pirate baseball for tonight be with us again Tuesday May 8th at 7:30 from Atlanta when the Bucs meet the Braves pirate baseball has been brought to you in part by Light beer from Miller everything you always wanted in a beer and less and in part by your 12 neighborhood aAMCO Transmissions centers who can put you in your car back together again coverage of tonight's game produced by Doug Kennedy directed by Brian site production and technical facilities provided by TPC Pittsburgh studio director Jorge Christensen and until we greet you and hope you'll join us in the next 2 on radio won't you but we'll be on TV Tuesday from Atlanta until then this is mine Hamilton along with Lanny fruitarian Nelson Broyles saying so long everybody from Busch Stadium in st.
