the solid substantial mid-size 479 by schlitz fear makes it good schlitz makes it great and by alcoa the leading producer of energy-saving aluminum well this is going to be a very important series right now for houston and also for their steve grogan the quarterback of the new england patriots for houston as i said earlier in the pre-game show new england is the number one rushing team in the national football league if houston is going to have any hopes of winning this football game they'd better put the clamper on that running game of new england that's not an easy task charlie because they have five players including the quarterback steve groban that's rushed for over 300 yards so far this season tony fridge will be kicking off for the houston oilers in his seventh year and his hometown is vienna austria now makes his home in dallas the deepaks number 26 raymond claiborne number 37 jim mcallister on the far side in don westbrook number 83 on the near side raymond claiborne of the university of texas automatic timing 9.46 at 100 yards and i'm sure that tony fresh is probably going to try to kick it to one of the outside men he doesn't want to get it to claim horn for that particular reason and he is kicking with the wind and the ball rolls off of the tee we'll see a lot of that this afternoon lynn dawson the effect of on the win on a quarterback well it's going to have a big effect when you're throwing into the wind and when it's swirling it has a big mental effect on a lot of quarterbacks particularly quarterbacks we haven't had the opportunity to throw with the wind conditions but it's going to be gusting up to 20 25 miles an hour and if it hits at the right time it can do a lot of crazy things to that football and as you saw as harry coyle our director larry cirillo our producer cut the waving of the american flag showing the wind here curtinoff is holding for the kickoff and claiborne gathers it in he's to the 30. he's to the 50 48 yard line of houston enough the man who is holding the ball in the kickoff makes the tackle and the patriots will go right to work well you notice they tried to kick the ball away from claiborne but he was going to have none of that he went over and fielded the football one total offense in the nfl new england the quarterback is steve brogan the running backs andy johnson and sam cunningham 39 sam cunningham big man in that offensive unit both running and blocking stanley morgan harold jackson the wide receivers russ francis the tight end but jackson is not starting they open with two tight ends russ francis and don hazelback at the houston 48 yard line andy johnson [Music] the offensive line for the new england patriots and it is outstanding [Applause] leon gray john hannah bill and kaidus sam adams and shelby jordan a lot of the ink goes to leon gray and john hanna but sam adams and shelby jordan have been doing an outstanding job this year harold jackson comes in as a wide receiver so now they go with a normal set second down and six [Applause] andy johnson he is to the line of scrimmage and that is it it will be third down in six now let's look to the defense of the houston oilers with a 3-4 they're fourth in the afc in total defense [Music] james young curly cup alvin bathay i said curly kolp's a big man but so is alvin buffet on that left side outstanding defensive lineman good linebackers robert brazile he is tough greg bingham steve keiner ted washington 52 brazil considered as good as anybody in the national football league at that outside linebacking position third down six russ france is in motion broken to throw all the time in the world it is complete russ francis 31 yard line first down mike reinfeldt makes the tackle well the reason he was able to get that pass off is because he had all time in the world to throw that football he was following russ francis all the way francis in motion you can't see it on your screen but he's in motion to the right of the screen he went out on a delay pattern but you can see the outstanding blocking i said curly kopp was important they had two men on him here comes russ francis 81 in to make the catch in the big first down for the patriots and now horace ivey is in the backfield as andy johnson comes out for new england cunningham sam cunningham 17-yard line first down greg stimrick and mike reinfeld stop him in the secondary for the houston oilers [Applause] there it is number 39 sam cunningham out john hannah 73 outstanding block there you can see what he did to a defensive man and do not try to grab this man with just an arm you better tackle him number 78 curly culp i said was very important he was blocked on that play a good job by the offensive center number 57 bill and kaitis curley's got to have a big day this afternoon if they have hopes of winning first down at the houston 17 yard line ball game just underway driving into the wind cunningham [Applause] he has two yards to the 15. it will be second and eight and curly cup was there he cut him down the houston secondary has willie alexander bill currier mike reinfeldt and greg stimrick i gave them in reverse order but it's derek and alexander in the corners courier and reinfeld starting for curtin officers they have their work cut out charlie as you mentioned in the pregame show two burners on the outside for the patriots and russ francis at tight end one thing russ francis is doing you will see him in motion you will see him set up on one side move to the other one of the reasons being the linebackers for the houston orders play weak and strong they have to flip-flop with him cunningham carrick good play robert brazile number 52. that that's going to be an interesting uh battle out there because the left side of the offensive line leon gray john hannah is very very strong they like to run to that side but on the other side for houston they've got elven buffet and robert brazil so it's going to be a real fight down on that on the left side of the offensive line for new england and sam adams shelby jordan on the right side of the line for the patriots you're a little tired of all the publicity the other side of the line is getting well the the patriots feel that shelby jordan is playing as well as leon gray and grey's all-pro there you see francis in motion right side rogan's pass is way under thrown was he hit before he made the release it was third down and eight they had linebackers coming charlie that time brazil number 52 and also number 57 keiners coming after the quarterback he was deflected but he was looking for francis all the way on that planet [Applause] so david posey is in for the new england patriots field goal attempt upcoming dick khan will be holding this will be into the wind the line of scrimmage the 15 he'll be kicking from the neighborhood of the 22-yard line they'll mark it at the 22 an attempt of 32 yards we're four minutes and 13 seconds into the ball game it is up it is good the patriots have the lead the score new england three houston nothing 10 43 left to go first period then that was set up with the kickoff return by claiborne yes it was it was a good return getting a great field position where they could do just about anything they wanted to houston on the other hand right now they don't have billy white shoes johnson but they would like to get great field position david posey will be kicking off either to johnny durden or larry poole into the wind durden to the 20 heads to the near side and heads for trouble his red shirt for chasing him out of bounds in the neighborhood of the 30-yard line [Applause] sydney brown was there larry poole laid a key block for the oilers let's look now to the houston offense they are fourth in rushing in the conference dan pastorini is the quarterback the great earl campbell and tim wilson are the two running backs dan pasterning the pass has been a quarterback that he'll unload at any time burrell's renfro and barber look for number 86 tight end mike barber you catch a lot of passes this afternoon first down for the oilers from their own 31-yard line and they open right up with their strength earl campbell who has been averaging 4.9 yards of carry rod shoat makes the tackle up front for the houston oilers greg sampson george renner karl mock ed fischer conway heyman number 64. george reiner they feel perhaps he is the best offensive lineman for the houston oiler football team a gain of four second down and six slot left campbell again gets the call picks up three to the 38 it'll be third down and three mel lunsford with a nickname of jaws makes the tackle for new england back that front three they all have nicknames number one of the conference and rushing defense mel jaws lunsford raymond sugar bear hamilton and richard tricky dick i'll tell you that's not what the opposing quarterbacks call them they have different names zabel nelson hunt and show the linebackers nelson hunt inside linebackers they got the job of containing earl camp third down three [Applause] tim wilson it will be close to the first down as steve nelson makes the tackle along with richard bishop and as the officials check it out let's check out the secondary for the new england patriots as we have one change we will have a measurement and that is prince mcrae is starting for doug badon it is raymond claiborne and mike haynes on the corners prince mcrae and tim fox at the defensive safety fox is the hitter on that on that team they're all hitters but he sometimes really goes with reckless abandon just shy of the first down it will be fourth down and about half a foot we're waiting to see if parsley comes in or if the oilers are going to gamble it is the nature of bump phillips to gamble now 9 10 time remaining first quarter new england leading houston three to nothing [Applause] bum phillips first victory as a head coach was here it was against the patriot seven to nothing in the rain and that by the way was steve brogan's first start for new england second back through diving over as well bump phillips says we're not going to get there without taking chances we're six and four we need a victory this afternoon we said how important this game is to the houston oilers you can see right now with the wind of their back and they could have punted that ball away and probably put the patriots in tough field position they went for the first down number 45 wilson is up and over grabbing that ball 7-57 nelson is a man making the tackle but big first down for houston at their own 43-yard line second back through is earl campbell breaking tackle going to the 48-yard line of new england now i've got something like every man in our audience who has a size what's what's 57 nelson stop earl campbell i said let me let me go back to what i wanted to do earl campbell [Applause] is a monster physically how am i going to get out of it i'll come back to it now what's this what's his leg drive that sets up my next point after this play look at the leg driving the legs is what he's talking about folks the size of the legs first down houston 44 yard line of new england tell him charlie i've got a great story on a shot of earl campbell every man in our audience that has a 36-inch waist would stand up right what if i mine's less i better sit down earl campbell's thighs his thighs measure 36 inches that's the same as your chest aren't you glad you brought that i certainly am his waist is 33. that's one of the reasons he is tough to tackle that's only one of them he has a lot of other ingredients at the 44-yard line of new england and here comes earl county they wrestle him down the hole was not there zabel gets the tackle but the defense just shut down well they're gonna do that with earl campbell you'll stop him you'll stop him and then all of a sudden with his tremendous power and balance he's gonna bust one and that's the way that he'll go but he's gonna get the football we have a score in miami leading buffalo seven to nothing dalvin williams touchdown 25 yards out [Applause] by the way he's the leading rush for the nfl walter payton is second earl campbell is third that man right there number 34. they're keying on him and they've got to they're keying on him and pasrini's going to have to come up pretty soon to throw get a couple of first downs and fake to earl campbell because wherever he goes those linebackers are going after because they've got to hit hurl campbell before he gets his start if he gets in the secondary he may run over those defensive backs tony mcgee and greg shaw mcgee first shawn second they're now in the defensive line for new england it is third down and 10. 44 yard line slot left side rich caster is a wide receiver to the near side [Applause] and richard bishop number 64 is leaving the field for new england left-hand corner he has been injured he is going to the locker room for the patriots this is the starting defensive right in is now headed for the locker room he has an injury to his hand bit parsley will be kicking fourth down and 10. there he is harry coyle our director immediately picking up richard bishop mike haynes set for a possible possible punt return because parsley does have that 25 mile an hour wind with him [Applause] terrible [Applause] he just shanked it to the 21-yard line that's what the wind will do to you because the drop is the important thing in hunting he didn't get a good drop that time a kick of 24 yards we'll take a timeout new england leads it three nothing 34-yard field goal attempt it is good new england leads six to nothing david and now for 34 yards out we'll be back good scrambling good move by number 14 grovin coming back in the pocket he was flushed out of the pocket and they know he can run with his football they're well aware that he's rushed for over 300 yards so far he's coming out this is going to draw up the defense good throw right on the money to number 86 is stanley morgan the foot race is on he comes up just a little short a gain of 32 yards on the play where was russ france well russ francis was helping his quarterback doing a good job blocking on robert brazil and believe me that is a tough job and the gun sounds that is the end of the first quarter we'll be back with the second quarter today's football game this is charlie jones lynn doss along with our director harry coyle our producer larry cirillo new england we'll go now with three tight ends russ francis number 81 don hasselbeck number 80 and pete brock the backup center number 58 who has to report to the officials which he did don't look for them to throw the ball to 58 brock a flag is down ivory is into the end zone offsides houston it will be refused i was just getting ready to say we hadn't heard much from number 23 horace ivory you heard from him right there touchdown and for horace that is his eighth touchdown of the season well there isn't much room here at all and it's just great running ability that gets him into the end zone keep going in you look at the bottom of the pile number 58 we just talked about i said don't worry about him catching the ball they're not going to throw to him his job in there is to hit somebody and to block he does an outstanding job on number 52 robert brazil one of the outstanding linebackers in the national football league and without that drive and without staying with that man brazil would have made the tackle before he got into the end zone good job pete brock posey to attempt the point after it is up it is good it is now new england 13 houston nothing the man who set it up remember rod showed well he recovered the fumble 35 yards three plays on the [Applause] [Music] drive got the wind to his back now so it's well within his range all he's got to do is get it up in the air from 37 yards out [Music] it is good it is new england 16 and houston nothing with 11 26 left to go in the first half his arms that ball is going to be popping around down there both teams had opportunities to pick it up you can see that was tim fox had an opportunity to get it but it looks like the one that finally came up with it ended up with the football was 51 ted thompson first fumble recovery of the ball game for the oilers they have the ball at the new england 32-yard line first down houston has to capitalize and they're running out of time in the first half 212 remaining playfulness campbell pastorini fires this one vera has it dropped to the 13-yard line boy he drilled it well that was a good throw and a good catch by number 0-0 ken burrow because he knew he was going to take a lick when he caught it getting off the ground don't like to do that but just running a curl pattern coming inside mike haynes going down deep going up high and he knew that he was going to get hit by the free safety that he did a gain of 20 on the play two-minute warning pastorini has completed three of six for 45 yards thus far in the first half well that was a big big throw the last time to kenny burrows he needs a big one here he needs six points first down 12-yard line trailing 23 to nothing campbell and carpenter are the running backs [Applause] campbell picks up a round three on the play raymond hamilton and ron were there trying to quick quick play into the second down at the nine yard line [Applause] yes sir touchdown rob carpenter his fourth of the year i said they were keying on earl campbell and they do and they were looking at him and carpenter number 26 had a beautiful hole going right up the middle you can see right here he's going to cut back against the grain good block by karl mach number 55 the offensive center that opened up that big hole untouched into the end zone big play for houston they needed that badly 32 yards of the drive in three plays ted washington set it up with a fumble recovery tony fritsch will attempt the point after it is now 23 to 6. [Applause] stealing it new england 23 houston seven will be back in a moment hope for a big break smoking like a true quarterback real courier i believe that's the man number 20 the safety that came up never always holding that football that's not the way to do it you better put that thing away with both arms because one thing you don't want to do is give up the football and that's exactly what he did courier coming out of the football we're at the hotel lobby today and he's got about 50 of his friends and family come down 500 miles to watch him so we came up with a big play at the patriots 42 yard line first down 112 left of the first half pascarini goes right to the air wobbly pass in and out of the arms of ken burr burra is now one for three in the last two series [Applause] yes sir going for number zero [Applause] [Music] because it just looked like somebody's punching these kicks when they're floaters they look like knuckleballs and the wind takes over third down about nine and a half to level it out going deep and he overthrows kimberl haynes had the coverage it will be fourth down in 10 this stops the clock now 49 seconds left to go in the first half well he's gone to kenny burrell the last i think three or four times that he's thrown the football what about mike barber the tight end well there's a man that's caught some passes he's got good speed and good hands also uh renfro of getting open and catching the football did we leave anybody out fourth down nine and a half to go for a first down lays it up burrow down the sideline and he overthrows it threw it out of bounds on fourth down and nobody had a chance to catch that football at least you throw it in bounds kenny burrell has an opportunity to go up and fight somebody for the football 32 34 and 37 yards away [Applause] so they're looking at that the field goal here this is well within the range of posey because of the wind to his back as i said before with the wind blowing like it is just get that ball up in the air and the wind will take care of the rest officially an attempt of 38 yards posey's also a soccer kicker that kicks it straight ahead he doesn't have that big hook that a lot of soccer styles now it is no good it is no good so posey misses from 38 yards away as time runs out that is the end of the first half with the score new england 23 and houston seven from 38 yards away [Applause] has hit three but he has missed two we'll take a time he is very quick and very powerful you know that uh he's got great power but the quickness is there now right there good block by fisher number 60 providing a little bit of a hole zabel is going to have to come and just hold on and help and hope for some help from some of his friends when bob phillips head coach of houston was asked doesn't campbell get up slow he says yes but he also goes down he won't go down at all unless you really get a hold of him second down and a couple they get hold of him here that'll be shy of the first down rod show who recovered a fumble in the first half for the patriots is there for new england she'll be third down and around a yard to go for a first down [Music] steve zabel comes out and steve king replaces him for the defense of the new england patriots third down and one houston needs a touchdown they got to have a touchdown they've got two downs to run it if they they choose to do that they're knocking i don't believe they're not gonna go for three points just outside the five yard line straight shot campbell first down he flew in there didn't he he gets a quick start oh he flew in there a lot a lot of people go up over the top [Applause] you can see right here straight shot to hit the man in motion but straight ahead and he is low to the ground when he gets ahold of that football and goes into the line a lot of backs will jump over top but i don't know where you're going to go you got the submarine to make sure that you get underneath him this is the 17th play of this drive campbell he has stopped short raymond hamilton at the bottom of the stage [Music] this drive started back at the houston 20-yard line 47 seconds now counting down 43 seconds we're in the third quarter they ought to get moving because they score a touchdown they want the wind to their back when they kick off but i'm sure they're thinking first things first diving touchdown houston rob carpenter his second touchdown of the afternoon his fifth on the year and is now a 23 to 13 ball game the oilers are right back in i said that earl campbell goes underneath well they got the other kind right here up over top rob carpenter and gets into the end zone with still 23 seconds remaining on the clock so when they kick off they're going to have the wind to their back and they had a reprieve on the kick the penalty against the patriots costing them in the year the bottom line six points maybe seven tony fritz with the extra point attempt it is good it is now new england 23. houston 14 23 seconds left to go third quarter way to stop the offense of the new england patriots is come up with that play and a good interception by number 19 willie alexander he was not fooled at all by this play-action pass brogan plenty of time going up top looking for number 29 harold jackson but you can see 19. billy alexander had his eye on the ball all the way 17th time this year that grogan has been intercepted and houston has the football on their own 28-yard line oh he got dan pastor 8649 in the second half so they're quite capable with him throwing and campbell running they've got a potent offensive attack houston trailing by nine points first back through earl campbell that will take us to the end of the third quarter as the guns down with three complete and one to go it is new england 23 houston [Music] [Music] 14. houston trailing by nine they want to cut the margin an attempt of 48 yards but now remember pastorini is holding but fritz does have the win [Applause] against new england the play will stand well you don't see this too often new england is offside but they're faking the kick and look at the little shovel pass forward good blocking by wilson outside number 45 on the outside man and good running and that's carpenter number 26 too which is good news he was the man that was injured a couple of plays ago the ball just inside the 14-yard line most of the time on those fakes the holder will fake it and roll out one way or another they head in on the outside to handle that that was an unusual type of play and it worked first down houston tim wilson welcome to the nine steve king makes the tackle again four it'll be second down and second you can see that you can see a difference now before the offensive line of houston was not moving that defense back any now they are and so that back is getting in there and he's picking up four and five yards of crack get get doing that particularly down in that tough area inside the 10 yard line that means the offensive line is doing a job chuck fairbanks head coach of new england looking on earl campbell dives to about the seventh raymond hamilton is the man who stopped him along with steve king king replacing steve zabel king did a good job on that he came across the line of scrimmage got penetration made sure that he cut back inside would not give him the outside earl campbell 66 yards 20 carries and still with 10 and a half minutes to go in the ball game don't forget after the ball game the sperry nfl report on nbc stay with us third down four to go for a first down yeah they'll run it down here tim wilson may have picked up the first down let's see where the officials spot the ball steve key again makes the tackle it'll be first down goal to go i said they'd run the ball down there because they're nine points down so three points three points is just about as important as a touchdown straight ahead you're looking at number 45 tim wilson he's just looking for an open spot and look at him carrying that ball with both hands he should do it also when he gets hit because that's the time that the ball generally pops loose now they got four shots at it diving over the top is wilson and he'll come up at the one-yard line steve nelson was there to greet him along with sam hunt no i believe was that rob carpenter yes it was so it'll be second down and goal to go [Applause] so the oilers battling from behind trailing at one 23 stage nothing it's a time it's great to have a guy like campbell down here and he is buried at the line of scrimmage but he scores touchdown earl campbell his eighth of the year wasn't anything there charlie as i said it's great to have a guy like earl campbell down near that goal line because of his tremendous quickness and his great power now look here he's coming straight into the line there isn't much there and he is so low so low that there's no way that you're going to get a hold of him he keeps that leg drive going right there lunging in with that great strength into the end zone now we do have a game going tony fritz to attempt to point after [Applause] bad snap had to wait on it'll be no good so that makes it new england 23 and houston 20 a three-point difference and [Applause] was an outstanding baseball player in his youth but didn't really have a shot at it really disrupted the timing and everything and you have to get that ball off in about 1.4 seconds and as much too long 903 left to go new england now leads by three but if you go for it you better make it andy johnson coming into the ball game for horace ivory once again as i say the man that they like to go to is number 39 sam cunningham fourth down actually a yard and a half to go play action [Applause] he didn't get it to him anyway look at francis you can see him down there he is really disgusted he was wide open play action pass really a gutsy call francis is wide open right now but he's running to his left that's the toughest way for the quarterback to throw you see now it gave the defensive back an opportunity to catch up mike michael reinfeldt had an opportunity to catch up and francis was wide open for a short while we'll take a timeout the patriots lead it by three he wasn't going to miss that one charlie he made sure he nestled that right in his stomach officials timeout and euler rob carpenter second time in the ball game that he's been shaken up as we look to the play one more time play action pass and you can see 57 nelson was reading run first pascalini took a shot afterwards but there it is right in the middle of his stomach that time double old kenny burrows was not going to give up that football he wasn't going to the ball at the 19-yard line will take a timeout with the score new england 23 houston 20. [Music] [Applause] second half as they were completely decimated in the first half trailing now by three [Applause] earl campbell campbell inside the 15-yard line good thrust picking up four or five yards and this is tough territory down here and he's not getting a whole lot of daylight six yards deep six and a half yards deep in the backfield look at him looking he's looking to see wherever he can go and he's following his big guard number 64 george reiner that's about four yards they need another play like that four minutes 45 seconds left in the ball game campbell gets the call one more time oh there was nothing there that time he ran right into the defensive lineman of rod shoat sam hunt it could be that pastorini is making sure that uh look where that ball is right in the middle of the field so that it is a straight ahead shot for the field goal kicker if they don't make the first down third down four i would suspect they might run it honestly bum likes to gamble no they'll run wilson he will come up shy of the first down we will go for the tie it was sort of a uh a draw play officials taking their time out probably taking a close look to see exactly where it is [Applause] [Music] well do you recall not too long ago the new england patriots on fourth down went for it now does uh does houston want to settle for a tie right now or with uh just about four minutes to go i would suspect that the offensive line is trying to talk bomb into going for it if they are sure measurement asked for [Applause] oh they don't need much didn't it just by that much just about a foot little over a foot to go that's right now go back to that field goal attempt go back to the extra point go back to the extra point field attempt to hit the upright that's right houston wants to timeout chuck fairbanks looks hard the extra time to discuss this the extra point was big because now a field goal puts you ahead now they're in a position with a record of six and four but they got to be concerned about making the playoffs and they don't want to get into overtime i'm sure with the new england patriots houston with a timeout and a discussion the only problem here though is this that even if they make the first down who's to say that they're going to score a touchdown that's right we'll take a timeout 357 left in the ball game 23-20 houston is forever yard line fourth down just over a foot sustaining a field goal attempt for a tie going for the first down camel the remaining back caster in motion he gets it campbell gets the first down and brother i'll tell you he got it on his strength because he was met by that new england line right at the line of scrimmage but that great leg drive got in the first down you can see caster in motion you can see the offensive line moving but there isn't a whole lot of movement there but when mr campbell hits that line it's going to get enough movement right there he's met right there at the line of scrimmage but look at it he ends up making about a yard or so 71 yards in the ball game 24 carries for earl campbell there's no secret who was going to get that football that time inside the eight-yard line first down goal to go [Applause] campbell to the four maybe the four and a half just inside the five across the yard line sam hunt makes the tackle that was a big first down because as you look at the clock right now three minutes 15 seconds they're inside the the 10-yard line inside the inside the five-yard line they score a touchdown and run out that that clock down pretty good may not be that the new england would have any time to do anything [Applause] it seems they don't make it they kick a field goal and tie it knowing they won't have much of an opportunity to do it campbell and wilson the running back five-yard penalty too much time no way you're supposed to do that that clock is right up in front of him up on the scoreboard so it'll move back to the 10-yard line costly delay of game pastorini was moving campbell well what was happening he probably was uh changing the look at his he's moving his backs because he's probably changing the play on the line of scrimmage getting everybody in position but the most important thing that he had to worry about is up on the scoreboard and that is the clock took too much time that's costly five yards and it's still second down gold to go now at the tail he'll throw as a man [Applause] rich caster caster his fourth touchdown of the year and for the first time in the ball game houston leads he beats dick carr well i'll tell you they have man-to-man coverage down on the on the goal line because they had to worry about stopping the run there wasn't going to be any zones back there casper is a dangerous man near that goal line now i'd like to say that the dan pastorini took that time so he'd get better position and more more of an area to throw but i don't believe that's the case but it was a good throw and a good catch and what a turnaround we've had this afternoon by the houston oilers 59 yards on the drive as you look to the touchdown pass again to rich caster acquired from the jets at the beginning of the season another bad stamp that is two bad snaps so the margin remains three points i don't that wasn't that didn't look so much of a bad snap as dan maybe just didn't handle the ball and you can see tony fritz he didn't know what what to do there now once again it's a big play but it's now only a three-point difference with two minutes 39 seconds remaining in the ball game houston will be kicking off to new england [Applause] both the patriots of the oilers have two time-outs remaining in the ball game dan pastor any 12 for 19 156 yards in the second half so they have turned things around but they got to get that extra point game down a little bit better than what they've been doing houston 26 new england 23. first time in the ball game the oilers have led the margin is three new england's cold they haven't had the football they haven't been out there the offense has been standing around this whole second half rich kicks off claiborne seven-yard line raymond to the 50 to the 20. former roommate of earl campbell at the university of texas in fact he was the man who helped recruit earl campbell when he made his appearance as a senior in high school on the campus taking a look at the snap but the ball wasn't that far off for for pastoring to handle it but the whole thing is that if you have to get that kick off in about 1.3 or 1.4 seconds from the snap to the kick and if anything disrupts that then it disrupts the timing of the kicker claiborne on the return is injured new england from their own 28-yard line broken over the middle pass is complete 35-yard line to andy johnson greg binga makes the tackle a gain of seven it'll be second down and three 2 16 clock is moving time remaining in the bargain they got to get hustling they need to get another play off before the two-minute warning they only have about seven seconds with 3 24 to go in the first half new england led 23 to nothing they've been shut out by the oilers since then it'll be third down and three cunningham ted thompson was there two-minute warning will be given to both officials timeout will be back with the conclusion of the down and three yeah look for the backs they he likes to go to the the backs in the situation like this they have been in this situation this isn't the first time this year that new england's been in this situation they've been in before and they've come away a winner boris ivory will lose yardage it will be fourth down and about five as ted thompson was there take a timeout now i don't understand that going with the uh with a sweep giving the the opportunity to the linebackers in the line to pursue along the line of scrimmage boris ivory has been held to only 16 yards in eight carriages and a week ago against buffalo he had a fantastic afternoon don't forget the sperry nfl report immediately following our telecast here this afternoon we'll be updating from new york all of the scores and highlights in the nfl now if houston wins this will be the sixth time in seven games that they have trailed at halftime and then one houston uh the only game that's been a runaway is the cincinnati game that they lost all other games have been seven or fewer points that separate the difference whether they want or lost except for the first half of this ball game which was a runaway and then the oilers got it together that's right like to have a tape recording what bum said in the locker room it will be fourth down and five 33-yard line new england has the ball with 151 left to go and it is too late to punt and gamble under strong pressure the pass is incomplete the oilers will take over on down houston an unbelievable comeback trailing 23 to nothing they've won their last seven ball games but they're in trouble right now new england patriots and that seven straight victories for new england equals the club all-time record for consecutive wins but houston will be breaking the string here congratulations from the head man himself with 144 left to go on the ball who do you think they're going to give that football to would it be number 34 i would predict now houston two timeouts remaining new england has won at the new england not going to give that ball to anybody he's going to keep it himself [Applause] and new england will stop the clock that is their last timeout he cannot fall on it three more times change of possession of the last one yes the clock stops on change of possession so he has to start running now they're doing the same thing he's doing the division that's 90 seconds and there's 101 left so you're coming up 11 seconds short bomb if you fall on it three straight times and also yes that would be right [Music] [Applause] we have a report that ron jaworski was hurt in the game in philadelphia was carried off the field [Applause] and the pregame show talked about the quarterbacks going down so that continues what do you think about this as a former quarterback are there more quarterback injuries this year than you've seen in the past well i'd say the last few years i think synthetic turf has something to do with it and the opposition has a great deal to do with it the the defensive men are so big and strong you know you're talking about people like robert brazil runs a 4-5-40 weighs 230 pounds and big defensive linemen out there that you see on synthetic turf straight ahead you get great traction so the collisions are going to be much greater than they were before plus the fact that these men are all on await programs from junior high school on they're much bigger and stronger than they were 15 20 years ago also i saw a survey on the increase in size of offensive lineman defensive lineman all defensive players the only offensive way that has not grown in size is the quarterback over the last 20 years oh i don't know i put on a few pounds yes but that's since you retired it's the good living update on earl campbell today 75 yards season total 945 yards that means that next week with 55 more he had reached the 1000 mark houston will be hosting miami next weekend new england will be at the new york jets what a comeback by houston in this football game really tremendous which shows a lot of the character of what that football team is all about bum phillips is a man of course that that directs that football team [Applause] [Applause] snap coming with one second on the 30-second clock that is the timer time remaining [Applause] it will be fourth down and and 16 england will still have a possession you know you look back a lot of strange plays one was that fake field goal that uh the shuffle passed forward that came up with a big first down that got them in and get some points and got a touchdown the kicking game today both sides posey hitting the goal post on a shock that was very makable two extra points never getting them off for houston and now we're in the situation of money and i'm sure that's going through the minds of those people down there because going back to punt the football with 16 seconds remaining and he's told one thing is get it off get that football off and they're telling the men up front don't worry about the coverage just make sure you blog and don't let anybody get through now you saw the clock stop with 16 seconds that was the countdown on the 32nd clock that stopped it parsley will be kicking new england will have one more opportunity they have no one back a long shot they're going for the block rushing 11 men he gets it off it'll roll free into the end zone automatic touch back seven seconds left in the ball game and only james bond double o seven himself could save it right now for new england all they can hope to do is put it up in the air and hope that somebody can come down with it or try to hit somebody in the middle out there someplace and hope that they get it by with the tackles but you'll take a look at the defense of houston when they line up for this you may not be able to find the deep guys because they're going to be so deep they're almost going to be in the locker room you can give up anything you want on this except letting them get across the goal line because with seven seconds to go they can't run that far i don't think in seven seconds [Applause] from the 20-yard line 80 yards away no [Applause] timeouts broken under pressure he's got to throw it time is out it is tiff it is intercepted houston has the football and sliding down is j.c wilson with the interception capping a fantastic comeback in the second half for the houston oilers as they stay in the picture for a wild card spot in a playoff position charlie you said it at halftime and i agree with you that houston played a miserable first half and at that time it didn't look like they really had a prayer of defeating the new england patriots the patriots had everything under control they were running with the football and no way they were supposed to win that ball game but they didn't know it final score houston 26 new england 23. this is charlie jones lynn dawson so long from shaffer stadium in new england the executive producer of today's game is don ohmeyer the game was produced by larry cirillo directed by harry coyle technical technical director arnold rand associate director howard bayer next sunday it all starts nfl 78 with a pregame show featuring jamie the greek ncaa and nfl scores and highlights the games 12 30 eastern time buffalo tampa bay new england the jets that starts it off don't forget to stay with us sperry nfl report right after you pause for these messages from your local station 320 first and goal with the 10. dan pastrini puts it into the corner rich caster has it and with that touchdown the oilers and the patriots winning streak at seven games hello everybody i'm brian gumbel mike adamle is in our highlight center and this is the sperry nfl report brought to you by sperry rand corporation whose commitment to the future is making machines do more so men can do more the oilers with perhaps the most stunning comeback of this day certainly of the season perhaps the final 26-23 the houston club trailed one time in this game 23 to nothing and the patriots rolling along to the playoffs had won seven straight they were playing at home all was going right for them until the second half and mike adamle was watching the comeback michael the oiler club has been accused of playing down to competition in the past i think they showed a lot of courage today yeah they certainly did if one game is going to turn around the euler season this may be the game they were like you said down 23 to nothing but they did come back it was 36 to nothing at this point when horace ivory scores his eighth touchdown of the season to make it 13 as if and then later on in the second quarter this first and goal situation great play action faked by grogan he fakes out our cameraman watch this block by 70 leon gray knocks robert brazil out of the picture he scores to make it 23-0 that's the way it stayed until late in the second quarter first down and 10 yards to go pastorini back to pass he pits double zero ken burrow over the middle to set up this seven yard touchdown run by rob carpenter great run 23-7 that's the way it was at halftime and then a little later on in the third quarter second down and goal to give us the carpenter again he plunges into the end zone from two yards out that made it 23-14 the oilers scored another one right now it is 23-20 pastorini back to pass there's that play for richard castro 26-23 big win for the oilers okay my giants washington the reds ah kind of like it was bad one of those days and then the last part was like they played when they played pittsburgh that's right unfortunately for them they did the houston oil has increased their chances of getting into the afternoon by scoring a dramatic come from come from behind victory over the new england patriots houston trailed 23 to nothing in the first half but scored 26 points in the second half to shock the patriots final score houston 26 new england 23 houston's record is now seven wins and four losses offensively a lot of the credit has to go to orland quarterback dan pastorini this afternoon he completed 15 out of 28 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown earl campbell had another big afternoon he picked up 74 yards and now needs 67 to go over the 1 000 yard mark for the season he also scored this afternoon rob carpenter had an outstanding afternoon by scoring two touchdowns and setting up another before he suffered a bad knee injury he could be out for the season it was a game that can contain rather two completely has for both teams and i talked to my ex-teammate tony mcgee new england's defensive end about that yeah it's a bad feeling to lose when you were 23 up because uh it kind of made you feel that your team didn't have the poise to come through when we needed to we jumped on them early because they made some mistakes that were critical and we took advantage of them but we turned around the second half and we did the exact same thing we made mistakes they took advantage of them they were at critical points of the game well tony dorsett and robert newhouse both gang completely half of the game today that the network carrying it on television warned the audience that they might switch to another more interesting game and maybe they should have it was a real dog houston trailed the pats 23 to nothing late in the second quarter and then as if they were struck by a matching wand it all turned around houston went from rags to riches let's begin from the beginning though new england scored in their first five possessions three set up by houston fumbles already in front six nothing they made it 13 to nothing horace ivey scoring there from one yard out later second quarter from eight watch the fake faked everybody out steve brogan on the brute leg he takes it in that made it 23-0 before the half though the orders would get on the board rob carpenter goes seven yards through a big hole 23-7 pat's still leading after driving 80 yards in the third quarter carpenter here scores again and made it 23-14 then fourth quarter watch it fourth and four they fake the field goal pastorini flips it back to carpenter who is coming across he goes all the way down to the 14-yard line that is an exciting and interesting play it would set up this two-yard earl campbell touchdown the point after though was no good it was 23-20 it was a three-point ball game later on at the new england 45 pastor 80 goes in the air to a wide open kenny burrow he takes it down to the 18-yard line it was still a three-point game should they try for the field goal or go for a first down on fourth down the decision go for the first down the man they call on of course earl campbell a fourth and one to give to campbell he got it a little bit later on from the 10 after a delay penalty it would be pastorini putting it up in the air at the other end right there rich castor that's the winner 26-23 the orders do it over in the winter this leaves the order still in the running for that playoff spot they are at seven and four right now they are in the running for the second wild card spot oakland will play tomorrow they are at six and four and they could be equal with the orders and they beat the orders earlier in the season so somewhere oakland has got to lose a game campbell yards today he needs less than 70 to go over the 1 000 yard mark he could do that next monday against miami one sad note coming out of this game today rob carpenter had 33 yards and two touchdowns but he also injured his right knee looks to be the cartilage he will probably be out for the season that's real sad because rob carpenter is a good one let's go to the score stadium foxborough massachusetts the pats scored two field goals in the first quarter leading six to nothing in the second quarter they were on the three-yard line of houston and right there horace ivory number 23 fights his way in for the touchdown 13 to nothing and made it 16-0 we're threatening again at the oiler eight steve grogan bootlegging left touchdown 23 to nothing an apparent breeze but before the half ended right there carpenter bursting through a big hole touchdown 23-7 the oil has come back had begun in the third quarter oil aboard and carpenter busting in for another score 23-14 fourth quarter 23-14 fourth and fourth in new england thirty-one fake field goal past meeting with that short test for rob carpenter good play all the way down to the pat's 14-yard line and right there earl campbell busting in 23-20 the conversion attempt fell later in the fourth quarter 23-20 new england houston ball first and 10 at the new england 45 pass from pastor we need a barrel he's downed at the 18-yard line of the pats later in the same drive fourth and one at the new england nine-yard line pascarini talking it over with bomb phillips and then what else earl campbell busting through for the first down to keep the drive alive then was houston ball second and goal at the new england ten pastorini tossing to richard cast of the ex-jet in the corner good houston won it 26-23 what a comeback
