[Music] okay take two I forgot to turn the recorder on we're here in Eau Claire Wisconsin and it's kind of chilly out but we're here with Russ and Jay and Johnson's and they have this wonderful barn fine it's a 67 ss396 but not just any 396 this is the L 78 the 375 horse the big one the rare car and has a four-speed it's got original paint original red paint and rush you bought it when I bought it in 1971 it's what I found it there's only eleven hundred and thirty-eight where produced with the L 78 and what's all this stuff on it it all comes down to it the more room we have the more stuff you don't throw away that you should throw away yeah I think you said it your your kids grown up and they gave you what Christmas or no fur my birthday was recently they gave us a dumpster so they given us a hint that they don't want to clean out this pool shed when they're gone so we have to start working on it and getting rid of the junk and and this definitely is not junk underneath treasures we get to see a real treasure come out for the first time in many decades so well let's have at it here I bought the car in 1971 from Chevrolet dealership in Wisconsin that it had spun main bearings of sponge rod bearings and I don't know the whole story what happened or how it got there that way but I ended up buying the car for eight hundred dollars and then I took it my cousin's farm and we parked it in his yard until I could make a spot get it in a garage and pull the engine out of it and and round up another 396 that was compatible and that would bolt up and ended up with three and a quarter horse 396 and put the heads and intake and we did the heads on it and put a service package cam in it and set it up for a drag racing and and yeah started out with the original 308 gears and and it went through the traps at 6000 rpms in second gear at 97 miles an hour so at the time did you know it was an L 78 neither was this 375 horse or was it just a SS 396 Camaro - you just SS 396 was a big black Camaro and back in the day car guys talked there was really no substitution for cubic inches and so I know I wanted a big-block and other friend said big black Chevrolet's that they were hit on the drag strip and so we hit was set up to drag race so we got here here's the original block I'm all the Pistons rods everything are still with the block they're not in it it's four bolt mean it's got the correct numbers on it I'm gonna get it to machine shop and probably have them clean it up and and tell me you know if it's a second you know the bike is good and go from there to match numbers start by opening the driver's side door and looking at the ein plate on the inside of the a pillar here we see the last six digits are one six three four four zero now look at the stamping on the engine pad of the original block and there you see the same one six three four four zero that's a match next on that same engine pad there is an engine application suffix code we see mr here and it's easy to look up mr this application is a 375 horse 396 l78 option another key area to investigate is the trim tag which is riveted to the firewall above the master cylinder at the bottom we see option code 4k which indicates the 396 was option code l78 hopefully we get enough error horse but it's gonna hold air well since give it a try here Roadrunner tires they must be good he 78 for teens pumping air into that right front tire lifted that wheel right out of the hole that is made for itself over the last four or five decades coming up it was amazing the tire hell there but it did doesn't know if they can even pop the biggest beat on it well that's holding their good in it so far that should be good the real wheel had also sunk below the level of the ground taken care of it so when Russ paired the tire pull the wheel out of that rut that's water didn't pop to be this kind of magical when Russ aired up this tire I thought other times when I pump gas and fix flats at Hales beep off the guy worked with his name Raymond and one day he wanted to time me to see how fast I could fix a flat on a manual machine I got it off the rim patch back on the rim and aired up in under two minutes two down starting to look like a car again all right so what do you think's in the trunk tires treasures tires they have to get a light see them why are there two of them probably because these are on the front of the car and had slicks on the back when we ran it as a drag strip this one still has air in it both I'm Harry random that's the only thing in the truck e 78 for teens little restaurant Laura quarter panel he's just a little scale enos no it's a it's a whole what really amazed me i I was tapping on the inside of the trunk and everything appears really solid it's shows a little rust underneath you know but I'm wondering if just blasting it will take a lot of that off you know compared to a lot of Camaros you see that people have been for restoration are just basket case and so and this is really a solid car yeah I don't feel any soft spots I think the floors are pretty solid now yeah can you see under there nice metal yeah do you have the stock air cleaner housing as soon as I check up above and hum the loft there's a bunch extra parts up there which I'm not even sure what's up there anymore I'm hoping there's a air cleaner base up there I would think I would think there is well first of all original connecting rods now this is Pistons from another okay here's the original Pistons and rods original exhaust manifolds for it it's got some plugs for the smog emissions and factory look at them intake was that stock on the car just in there I have to look if this one was the stock one that came with the car or the one that's on the car is the stock one it's either or probably have to do some research on that but or unless they're the same I don't know see what I can find a Camaro parts and the loft [Applause] the console from a 69 player girl or 68 1 to 2 dug thoroughly headers I believe these are the original hubcaps I believe this is the original small part one of the valve covers and there's the other valve cover looks like more smogged equipment well doesn't appear to have a bill cheat nope good girl laughs under there though this first time you had the seat out yes far as I can remember I'm sure it was loose so I must have taken it out for something it doesn't have any headlights in it right now and I was wondering where the bezels work for it I didn't remember that part but looking through the back here I'll show you something the trim and the bezels the reason they're not on the car I had um where I still have it 73 Dodge van that I needed um headlights port and so I dropped them off of this car and I thought well I'll get new ones for this and well this is how far it got think it'll see daylight think it'll make that turn and get out of here ah see first of all the way from meets the Polish seat cover seat she says it's a little dusty inside so getting it ready so chicas here first maybe she want to keep the car you want to keep it now Jane that's three years that people trying to buy this car from you oh yeah today go around parts and people would comment don't want gonna tell me that Camaro Hanna I always use the standard engine turn out I'll put you any I'm on the list and it never went any further that I had the guy come over last fall here through the grapevine that somebody said I was selling the Camaro on and I sent the picture to another friend you know you was doing a 55 Chevy and as well here's another project just you know joking them and didn't they know it's true not for sale at all well it must have went through the grapevine this guy talked to this other deities of developer cars for sale at all not got my door well you know I hear you had a car for sale at all Isis well not really you know take a look at it it's very you know you can't see much of it you know on and he was ready to buy it it all but ice as well not at this point it's I'm not ready you know and this is life swallowing it all along what got me thinking and got me going with when the daughter gave was a certificate for the dumpster and you think well yeah there's a lot of junk you should we just tossed it on seventy three thousand nine hundred and twenty three point four one hundred and twenty mile an hour speed Iometer it's got a the tack it red lines at 6,000 rpms it's got the AM radio it's got the the cluster with fuel gauge temperature gauge o'clock oil pressure and battery got a hearse for speed yeah chief carry I saw an open to pull learned a lot but couldn't get to it I that bought the car new lives in the same town here I found out about a week ago and he bought it new in when he was in service in California built in in Los Angeles he actually ordered the car new and it he said it he waited I know two or three months to get the car and then he drove it back to Oklahoma skansen and he had it until 71 and then he created at a dealership in Sutekh Wisconsin for ANOVA an SS Nova and then that car was was resold to a girl and the girl that had it actually went to college in Eau Claire and there's a sticker on it that a parking sticker for a University of wisconsin-eau Claire what I've researched about the 3:96 l78 375 force is serviced 1138 made in 67 so it is pretty rare car the basic model with no disc brakes no power steering AM radio it's the bare necessities for a muscle car won't be kind of sad to sell it though I mean it won't kind of make you feel sad and what do you think well I've enjoyed it and I definitely be sad to see it go but I would really like to see it all redone and pictures of it and that I could mount on the wall that this was my Camaro and it lose I'm in pictures so if you physically have the car or not it's hasn't been hasn't seen the lighting outside in many moons so if you have it under wraps um picture is probably better
