1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Revival: First Start in 30 plus Years! 292 Y-Block - Abandoned in Woods!

all right everyone welcome to another episode here on restoration yep we're at the old man's we're here at the family graveyard the family auto graveyard and here behind me is a 1957 ford fairlane we're really not 100 positive what size engine's in it but we're going to try to get it running today for the first time in a bunch of years we're going to give it a walk around and hopefully this old baby will be able to move today in this episode you better hang out you better watch because we never know what's about to happen on restoration [Music] [Applause] so let me let you in on the secret house uh i think the old man's wanting to really work on this house and get it uh livable we don't know if it'll ever happen uh but we are inundated with canes here close to the river here's the shop here's the old man we're waiting for dirt to uh come in isn't it pitiful we can't find people to bring us dirt but here's the 57 fair lane what you want to say about it old man you got anything well i know i bought it four years ago and uh from a guy he said guy lived about a half a mile below him he didn't even know the guy but the guy saw his trailer he had a old flatbed trailer that he hauled hay and stuff on me and stopped and asked him one day could he uh trailer haul an old car to this salvage yard he wanted to scrap an old car and the guy told him yeah let's go look at it so when he got down there it was this 57 ford just like it sits here and the man said he couldn't scrap it he's so he bought it from the guy and then uh he said he cranked it one time and it caught fire you see the burn spot in the top of the hood and uh after i got home with it he delivered it to me and i tried to crank it and i saw the gas coming out the bottom butterfly shaft and he quit and so i quit i said i got to have a carburetor so here it is it's a 1957 four-door but it's uh she's got craters ain't got all the lugs on it she's got some old crater ss's right yeah some old school mags uh got a dent here on the on the tail end let's see 1976 looks like the last well maybe maybe not what is that 82 is that say 18 80 82 maybe we don't know but we know it's old 1982 um old fair lane 500 the tires and wheels are look good on it yeah yeah we're running up and down the dirt road you got a little bit of growth right here yeah a little bit that's all the parking that grow that no i'm talking about through the door all right there it is not bad not horrible man i should have looked that's one thing we ain't got all the dirt doubles we got all kind of stuff oh going you done tore the trim up bent the trim there she is there's the uh seats really ain't horrible let's see got a tear spot in them need to be cleaned up i can't believe you just bent that didn't you ripped it off and what does that do that bends down yeah bend it there you go look at that we already repaired it we gotta you know pull that off maybe we're gonna pull that trim off we gotta i'll put it in the trunk here a little bit gotta fix that oh all right we'll show you the rest in a minute all right everybody the old man had to go inside uh mama called my cell to get him to go inside he had to run some chores so uh he's back out ready to play again we've opened the uh open the engine of course the the hood lifts up this way and uh if you look in here you'll see it's got an old elder brock on no it's got a holley carburetor holley carburetor with oil elder bro uh breather on it uh so we're probably we know the old man said this one leaked so we we may pull it off uh we may we may pull it off and go put this original ford four barrel on it and uh it'll uh it'll probably bolt up and go fine but here it is old 292 y block c code car she's the four-door model um old man has tried to start it a long time ago and don't know if it uh will start it or not i know we couldn't get it get it running so we're gonna do it today and uh hopefully gonna move this old girl around the yard what you think old man i sure hope we can back it up at least ain't got no breaks on it back it up i hope who needs brakes what do you have to do when you want to work on one of your cars this is what we have to do old man's going clean as a path [Music] you might need some carburetor work on [Music] that [Music] what did you hear old rabbit or something run out monday with no it wouldn't [Applause] oh there's a whole lizard look at him and cut down his habitat i'm sorry buddy come on oh man [Music] i want to go that way [Applause] [Music] all right y'all we'll be back in a second eugene at uh eugene's backyard repair hooked us up with a starter uh a remote starter switch of course we're gonna old man says this one will probably start from the inside but uh eugene we're gonna give it a go and hopefully we can make it a go i left your squirters at the house that's my fault left a gas at the house cause that stuff's hard to find these days so we're gonna get to it put a battery in it and see if we can get her to crank all right y'all we got the battery installed uh we we forgot the uh fuel so we got our old mountain dew bottle again and uh old man you want to dump some right back in there well hold on let's check and see if the old here's old starter switch we're going to see if it'll turn over y'all ready ready switch have to be on yeah so to fire yeah um the engine turns over she's not locked so uh so that's good man it what we do if this thing just barks off right now these dogs skeeters squirter in there all right we're dropping a little bit of fuel down in there you ready oh the chevrolet distributor way back you putting it in the full barrel too no well that's the second secondary's in the back cleaner bark hit the old uh give it old foot feed one action one time there you go i think we're going to get in on our points and all that it did bark one time you hear it spit back do you see any gas [Applause] over here squirting out over oh she sounded a little rough hit it one more time i hit the uh hit it with some gas good lord you hear that thing that's all i've ever had it to do i can't be able to keep it running these dog on skeeters i'm gonna put some my gasoline on me these things over here eating your butt up man all right what uh hit it one more time see if we can get it to bar i don't like rebuilding holley carburetors uh so we're probably gonna take this full barrel off and go get the full barrel that's on the 60 uh 63 and a half and uh drop it on here but let's see if we can make it bark if we can't we'll go get that one we know we can make it work because i rebuilt it [Music] that's what that's what the old thing was oh hood hood action needs some uh go down with a little bit more hey damn put it on the reels put it on that bolt right there all right that hood ain't going nowhere i just swallowed a mosquito i'm gonna bite that in a minute i just swallowed that thing uh what think new carburetor go get the rebuilt carburetor yeah watch the uh gas come out the butterfly over there over there over here here and over there too can you yeah they ain't doing it then i thought it was the other side it leaked see it leaking oh right out of the shaft of the butterfly shaft see it pouring yeah i thought the other side was leaking worse than this got some leakage on this carburetor so we're going to uh we're going to go pull the other one and slap it on here [Music] i got some yeah oh wow but i think this is the same fuel [Music] pump [Music] drop an old 4100 on here y'all [Music] might have to be on my side old man you're on the camera side all right i'm on the camera [Music] just like this is what you're going to look like about 20 years that's heartbreaking that was heartbreaking i can't wait till j.c started calling you old man you turned 40. i begged him to yeah he listens to his granddad turn that up before you tighten it hey daddy you know why dinosaurs don't make uh pancakes cause they're extinct [Music] it was pretty logical answer yeah started one fire on this rascal so uh the old man how'd that get on top of my head on top of your head yeah hit me on top of heads these gas discs yeah oh you're gonna be hot not draining back into the copper i mean is there a check valve in the bottom shouldn't be okay it's a big old rope be slick not like a snake don't colored up like one the snakes is out bad down here in georgia too let me run up him up on this car and you're gonna see a preacher dance i don't believe i can walk on water but i show enough tribe one of them snakes got after me there you go just taking off that boat top down there 10 or 12 was laying on that right down you can't see it but right down there we had the old boat dock we had that boat dock and had uh what three four by eight sheets of plywood on top of it yeah we were gonna change it and didn't have a styrofoam in the center so the old man took two pieces off and boy i had my feet dangling in the water playing and uh we took the last one off and how many was there in there yes at least it does oh lord and uh sheep rocking a million muscle shavings muscle shields where they've been sure he told me he told my brother he said jim he said hold up this one right here so i can hit it with a shovel so uh we didn't have no uh we had no fear shirts on but we really had fear we were scared to death uh so the old man did it one hand how how did you do it that he had one hand with a shovel shut up and held it and i was hitting him with a with a uh square shovel i think he was about one for 12 because he only killed one killed one and the rest of them run off but we didn't dangle our feet and water no more they didn't run off as quick as i did yo so we have our uh we got our old gas tank old sniper powered gas tank we got our 1963a so this is off to 63 and a half carburetor uh off the ford so hopefully it's getting gas to it squirt it and see if she squirts oh yeah she got gas in her and uh so we don't need the mountain dew bottle so i'm gonna hook the power back up here in just a minute hey hey old man you know what is the uh the most detail-oriented ocean of all uh the pacific ocean the pacific ocean that's right do you hear about that old fellow that fell down into the whale you know why he did he couldn't see all that well i'm so sorry those were horrible i'm sorry all right y'all so we've got uh we've got the old clicker button here switchback we've had it on all this time yep turn the switch back on i had the battery unplugged so we were good all right so we got uh 292 y block the offenheiser valve covers got the full barrel auto light 4100 carburetor pumping gas into it so she should crank right i mean we know it's getting fire because it barked off a second ago it's kind of easy so let's see one two oh she act like she wanted to run didn't you you ready yeah starter kicked in and kicked out oh i don't want to start a kicked in and kicked out my old safety switch down here oh eugene switch came off come on baby all right i can't do this one-handed to be back in a second second later you ready old man oh you ready wait don't start don't hit it don't hit it anymore it seems like as soon as the starter kicks out it cuts off what does that mean last time it did that it was the uh condenser on your old car yep all right let's say keep going come on old baby 292 needs to fire oh you ready yep [Applause] [Music] as soon as you as soon as she wants to fire condensers ain't that what it sounded like what your galaxy was doing in the jeep oh getting gas getting fuel getting fire getting sparked but as soon as she goes to fire she uh she boogers out let's give her one more u-rod one more maybe you're letting it off too much just hold it open a little bit yeah hold it all the way up all the way up hold it wide open don't let that call the foot i don't know why she's cutting off just soon as letting starter off same thing the jeep was doing let's you go you got the ignition on yeah but it won't crank it man well it won't crank it because i ain't got switch plugged up to it oh okay you ready just as soon as she fires she stops uh stops running all right what's your uh awesome good looking amazing no i probably shouldn't say that oh yeah you're my baby what did uh what did your baby boy figure out that the switch is not uh hot when the switch is on so we got a bad switch evidently got a bad switch so when we when the switch just goes to on it cuts all the power to the coil so the engine won't keep running so what do i need to do gonna run a hot wire from the hot battery to the hot coil and uh like we did the others and and just use this just used in my test light uh just used my test light to uh to hit to that and uh while this was holding the engine would run just soon as i'd pull it off it cut off so we're gonna go run us a test wire or a dummy wire from there uh to the the main power of the solenoid we're gonna see if we can make this engine uh make this engine run all right y'all we're going to uh try to start the engine once again we figured out we think we have figured out it's a bad switch and uh so the switch is not kicking when it's just in regular on position it's not uh sending fire to the coil so the engine cuts off so we're going to bypass the switch really he'll still be able to run the starter switch in there we've got the solenoid hooked up uh normal so old man's going to hit it in there in this minute whenever we power uh this up to the engine but i had to ask oh man you know why uh peter pan is always flying because he never lands i'm sorry hey you know what uh uh you know what tennessee saw same thing arkansas all right hit it let's see if she'll run she should run come on baby is that getting power go somebody getting power now you got uh you got all the wires up there i got it on the positive side that's where it would go right should power there power there good work go is it squirting yeah don't hit it no more gas you're flooding it come on baby yeah did you do something there we go now we're talking we're cooking with grease now put a little bit of oil out valve cover's leaking a little bit sound cover's leaking a little bit [Applause] good lord no no oh we can't cut it off i got to cut it though [Music] you know why i said cut it though you got to water it you take no oil either no garnet why don't we always forget to check the hole all right if y'all can see that we got a little bit of got a little bit oil in it so we're going to drop it's nasty it's been there a while this is how we do it on the family graveyard look at there y'all old man got that one gallon bucket working he's missing the hole he plays i'm just washing the radiator that's what i'd say too oh gosh that thing's pouring water in here we put it in she's got a drip drip throwing them canes grew through it i think that thing tinkles about like i did what's that doing oh man that don't be disappearing down there he's got a it's about half closed up head all right so what you want to do old man you want to see if she'll back up yeah i'm going to back it up what all right the old man's afraid not really afraid he just doesn't want doesn't want this whole thing to get away from him but i'm gonna all right see if she'll crank and then he's gonna try to back her up oh don't check can't get her in the gear huh yeah come on the gas pedal's already off oh came off of that well you ain't the clutch ain't working oh clutch will work yep it just slides in there well that ain't no good he's still opinion over here that old man wants to know if i can hit the hole so don't be moving it now i'm trying to hold it steady look at there i didn't put maybe a not even a half of a liter because i didn't know if this would work or not looks like it's working i don't know if you think yeah we think back it up anyway hold on let's see oh hear it going in this work huh good now all right put the top on this thing isn't you hear it that's pretty neat ain't no gravity fail we need no fuel pump first time she's been moving i guess in a lot of years i don't know what in the world she's so hard of cranking for [Applause] up your fuel feed gas pump doesn't come off again i think unless you ain't got the hot wire hooked up yeah that ain't it ain't gonna crank with the hot wire not hooked up that is true i wonder if there's a is there a hole in that nope i wish there was a hole in that so we could tie it to the thing all right you should be that's the way it's supposed to crank baby that clutch is slipping ain't it up yo clutch slipping you're going forward for it you want to see him [Music] hey y'all don't ever throw your bread ties away you never know when you want to use it on an old ford and this is blue in color so that's the ford brand so we uh can't hardly see but he's just long enough around here oh yeah look at there that's old ford uh bread tie right there now well it would be enough to hold your old size 12s i don't think it's going nowhere old man old ford bradshaw right there that's how you make it work look at it oh man let's find the other side that time [Music] back here [Music] foreign all right y'all this 57 fairlane with a 292 y block has been sitting forever we couldn't get the old holley carburetor to work right we really don't know if we could or not but we put the 4100 auto light on it we uh figured out we had a switch issue when the switch was on on the ignition is not sending power to the coil so we got a straight wire for that so we're going to straight wire we're going to let the old man crank it up and play around with it for a second and let's see what'll happen we try to get brakes but we don't think the brakes are going to pump up um so uh hold on [Music] look at him playing around like a kid hello 57 barrel in a run yo hey if i hit the gas tank up front and don't slide detail in these bricks back here see the bridge hold on [Applause] you got the slide kicking out [Music] trying to kill the engine all right y'all the mosquitoes ain't biting that bad over here so we want to hurry up and get off we thank y'all so very much
