in the mid-1960s the modified sportsman class was the final stepping-stone up to NASCAR's premier division then known as grand national but then as now many of the sports biggest stars competed in the Permatex 300 the modified sportsman race that preceded the Daytona 500 this film provides another glimpse of what racing and racing coverage was like back then I am particularly fond of the sound of those screeching tires nonetheless the film does provide an excellent record of what modified sports when racing was all about in that era let's have a look at [Music] through these portals pass the most dedicated automobile racing fans in the world when they come out on the inside there in the world capital of auto racing the Daytona International Speedway today 50 modified sportsman cars are lined up for the 1967 Permatex 300 the reason for the large crowds isn't just the tremendous popularity of automobile racing modified sportsman races are particularly exciting this is where young up-and-coming drivers and mechanics get their chance to prove themselves in competition with top NASCAR grand national crews modified sportsman racing is called a backbone of stock car racing it's here that you either make it or break it [Music] is sort of like a hot rodders dream it's a muscle car a lot of engine in at least a three year old body Paul Goldsmith leading the pack smashed the three-year-old qualifying record for this race by nine miles per hour he blistered the track with a two-lap average of a hundred and seventy nine point five five one in his plymouth sportsman a parade lap a running start and the race is on Paul Goldsmith in number nine flemeth and Laroy Yarborough number 99 Ford jump into the lead as the rest of the field hustles to keep up Yarborough catches Goldsmith on the backstretch and flows by him Yarbrough number 99 a 1961 Ford likes to run in front Leroy is a two-time winner of this race he's been on the pole three times pride and joy of car owner Ernie Tufts Minnesota wheat farmer who spends all of his spare time preparing this car for this one race each year [Music] grab one and it's 99 with the number nine is supposed to be two miles an hour faster than Yarborough in 99 but you'd never know it Yarbrough and number 99 our old friends they know how to run this race one two three draft with ninety nine nine and Oh for number of FDS we've got the fourth 87 is faith [Music] is already a corner of Aleppo the backstretch number nine roars past Yarborough 99 looks like he's tied to oppose what happened was goldsmith holding back that much and just got impatient or is there something wrong with all 99 even Yarborough's crew wants to know why they expected him to get on and front and stay there whatever the reason number nine Plymouth is pulling away fast the rest of the field is fighting for positions in the top ten [Music] less than three laps under his belt and gold Smith is lapping the field [Music] jar broke rings number 99 in it looks bad what is up big trouble Oh bigger trouble on the track yes Billy number four plymouth running second goals are tire and kisses the wall the inner tire kept him from losing control number fifty and eighty-seven boards are now second and third [Music] Yarbrough number 99 are through till next year a broken distributor puts a top driver out of action quick tire change on a pole tank keep Pasco in the race 12 three ten and one speed smoothly through the Eastern nice why's almost wiped out poor cars with the leader working his way through traffic is still building along and almost a hundred and seventy six miles per hour [Music] and a half behind the leader in 17th place [Music] goldsmith is building a tremendous lead over derringer in number 50 number 87 ready fryer number 47 port is fourth eighty seven and forty seven eighty miles and the first scheduled pit stop again Curtis Turner brings in number 87 Turner won this race last year in the same car [Music] pit stops are often the great equalizer 30 seconds in the pits is half a lap lost fast and he hold on a third place the pack comes by without its leader Goldsmith the number nine plymouth hits with a 50 second lead over derringer a number 50 who's still out there running second goldsmith gets super service from the Ray Nickless group the leaders pitting Jim Haskell number four thanks to his early refueling begins to regain some Brown 66 and 91 horns on these turn we'll have to be cleared [Music] some Abigail who's been running the wheels off the car as to mark time while his competition pits Turner number 87 goes into second as derringer in number 50 pimps the yellow flag still holds a feel down ready fryer in 47 pits from fourth place darryl derringer gets out in third place looks like they're almost ready to race again as fires crew gets to work in a hurry by me number 47 is caught in the pits as passed away number oh poor way down on the inside blast past the field cuts across the traffic and grabs fourth place sound driving [Music] he's on the break every record in the book [Music] empty track or choked with traffic Goldsmiths in number nine Plymouth muscles his way through the field time and time again goldsmith himself I know they say I'm a charger that I Drive planned out all the time it's true that's the only way to drive rain nickel Goldsmith's crew chief says if a car was capable of 200 miles an hour or more and Paul was driving I feel perfectly safe riding with him number 87 and 50 left behind number 9 are in a tight battle for second Goldsmith a nine just never lifts his foot [Music] Errol derringer number 50 is on the move he pushes ahead of Turner in number 87 to take second is running faster than 50 and 87 faster than Oh for at this rate they're all going to be running together [Music] there it is Oh four and nine have caught up with 50 and 87 that's really LED putting it around the old Speedway here comes the first pass Oh for roars by 87 to take third at the same time number nine laughs 87 two foot turn or two laps down and now oh four and nine move in on 50 [Music] Oh far wheels past 50 in a second place and nine laps 52 put derringer two laps down look at them travel [Music] Pascal in number old war is in a desperate battle with goldsmith to keep from being laughed himself [Music] go Smith screw shows in 51 flat that's one second under a hundred and eighty miles per hour [Music] goldsmith and Pascoe in their hot climates are locked into their own private race the two ports 50 and 87 pull back but was half the race still to run and anything can happen [Music] Pascal is just two car lanes away from being two laps down to gold fan 150 miles down 150 to go and goldsmith the number 9 passes Pascal in number 4 [Music] all goldsmith puts five miles 100 seconds at 180 miles per hour between himself and Jim Pasco in second place with the race more than half over that would seem like a commanding lead [Music] derringer running third signals the start of pit time again this should be the second and last set of pit stops it's gas and rubber all around for derringer [Music] in fourth place drops down from the high bank slowing down for his pit stop him we can get him out as fast as they did the first time here comes Goldman the crew is on the car before it stops rolling [Music] Racing head stuffs aren't very neat but they get the job done in record time ten seconds [Music] 20 gallons of gas what he's like [Music] two tires on a clean windshield 30-second [Music] another caution flag not bad break for goldsmith a good break for Pascal who pits on the slowdown his crew is still sweating over the car the engines called and Turner can't get it started [Music] the slowdown on the track is fine for Pascal time to get back in line for the green flag don't wanna get caught in the pits [Music] in record time if he can catch the pack before the field makes a circuit he'll be only one lap behind goal spend a third of the starters are out of the race this is the school of hard knocks in Turners case when the horsepower fails you drive manpower come on man watch our backs into it [Music] those golden opportunity to make up one of his to last by the grandstand [Music] it's a long caution light just long enough [Music] the green flag and they're racing again and goldsmith all the way again with Pascal Cotte in traffic [Music] basketball in Beaufort fights his way through the pack in second place ready prior in 47 is third [Music] Haskell is really whipping over hard now trying to shrink as much of the distance as he can between himself and goldsmith [Music] Goldsmith's still has about a laughter quarterly tell them he's got it locked way to the checker only 20 laps to go [Music] prior [Music] ten laps to go and Goldsmiths wobbles into the pits he's run out of rubber Goldsmith catches his crew by surprise number nine has led the race for 250 miles the decision to come in was Goldsmith's new rubber and maybe second place or take a chance with what he had is this the break Pascal's been waiting for go wash by the grandstand into the same time as Goldsmith nice comfortable lead goes up in smoke has passed all streets around the Speedway the pressure is on the crew now the fight to save seconds lose a second bread's suddenly become left-handed [Music] Goldsmith's lead is gone Beaufort roars in the first place nine charges out in second five laps to go [Music] Pascal pours it on those a hundred and 80 mile-per-hour laughs now the shoe is on the other foot [Music] no leads by half a lap there's goals with [Music] Haskell's pity he must really be desperate to fit at a time like this [Music] this had better be the world's fastest pit stop [Music] and it is just a shot of gas and he's away here comes goldsmith into the fourth turn fifteen seconds behind goldsmith practically has his foot through the radiator [Music] heads down the backstretch as goldsmiths comes out of the second turn [Music] only seven seconds separating all four and nine [Music] is between 47 and 12 [Music] with only three laps to go this is the run for the money and everybody is trying to improve his position is only four seconds ahead of mine drivers are running out [Music] the white boy one more lap it's all or nothing for Paul Goldman [Music] three seconds separate o49 but [Music] - Pascal charges right down to the wire on - left behind Jim pass ball rode all the way victory well there you go another exciting race on the high banks of Daytona though that one took a while to develop we'll be back in a moment with some final thoughts well that's it we hope you've enjoyed this week's edition of victory circle for my money the Daytona 100 and Permatex 300 set a pretty spectacular stage for the 1967 running of the Daytona 500 go to Daytona next February and you will see a sport build on the foundation of those events we've just watched between qualifying races are now 125 miles each but they still provide one of the most spectacular doubleheaders anywhere in the world of Motorsports and the 300 miler now characterized as the Busch grand national series is still a combined showcase of established heroes and NASCAR stars of the future and remember this whether you're looking for a racing history lesson or simply some old-fashioned fun victory circle is the place to find I'm Dave Despain that's it for now I'll see you again next [Music] you
