urban row 18 bill schmidt and chad little row 19 phil parsons and ken schroeder row 20 dale jarrod and jimmy means buddy arrington and ruby garcia round out the field as they come out of turn number nine and get set for a start here we are at riverside 119 laps to make the distance this afternoon and breaking to the line in front [Applause] of turn one who's gonna give first as the green comes out to mr king kodai gets it ricky rod drops into second terry lavonnie is in third back to fourth falling one position on that start is the car rusty wallace threw the s's for the first time and you see car number five find a boy getting about three car lengths for just a moment that'll shorten up right here at turn six see earnhardt running in that fifth position going in the sixth spot as they begin to get them going bill elliot here for the lead ricky rudd right there in second spot closes in on car number five bodine at turn eight downhill negative tamper corner into that long straightaway speed here up to 180 miles per hour it's in this area where world stolen and came to some 200 miles an hour and at the end of this long straightaway turn number nine the body on the car came disentangled and he lost his life here two years ago most critical part of the track right here coming to turn nine wide open it better than 180 heartbreaking of these 3 500 pound cars and the chevrolet of bow die out in front drawing away from ricky rodden's second spot here in the first lap meanwhile a little further back earnhardt is trying to get himself around bill elliot at the end of lap number one of 119. big crowd on hand today you see bodine first blood second back to third comes the western wallace car and up to fourth is dale greenhardt where you're not supposed to going across the tunnel area he is really moving and he's closing in on rusty wallace there you see wallace in the 27 car and directly behind him the man of the year three-time winston cup champion dale earnhardt won it last year won it this year with still a race to go in atlanta georgia and look at earnhardt working on rusty wallace as he tries to take the spot incredible start well you know rusty wallace and earnhardt are best friends but they love to intimidate each other on the racetrack they love to bump each other they play around and i'll guarantee you they're going to get together and get after each other because there's a big ego battle here car number three dale earnhardt who was never one of the strike he's had a couple of second places here closes on rusty wallace once again here they are the fastest part of the course there you see the number three right behind him comes terry labonte a former winner then bill elliot is next and big surprise of qualifying that car of the wood brothers seven times the wood brothers have won on this track kyle petty at the keyboard and car number seven maintaining a good steady sixth position now rusty wallace won at watkins glen and the way he won that race everyone says his brakes he could drive by everyone and drive in deep and he did that earlier and just drove right by terry lavonny when jerry levine got on the break so it'd be interesting to watch if his brake slacks breaks a critical factor on this racetrack you may be sure they certainly are and especially going into turn nine if you don't have the proper brakes there you get off in the corner and that screws up the whole lap for you you lose a lot of time [Applause] second lap complete and now from the superflow in-car camera you're riding with rick hendrick a rookie driver a man who owns all kinds of car franchises around the country well rick hendricks asked me to tell his kids ricky and lynn hello for him and not to worry about him so we're going to take good care of your daddy and your mom's here so watch your daddy have a good time there's the in-car camera for superflow car and out in front are from the folger's car with our superflow and car camera now watch these two leaders another time it is beaudine first ricky rudd second three car length differential will scream down that back straight away wallace is deployed third and there you see in fourth the blue and yellow car that is dale earnhardt 11 times the winner this year ms bodine tries to stretch it out a little bit gets caught up here in turn number nine the track record in qualifying for this of course is the tim richmond mark from 1986 at 118 miles an hour o'diana qualifying to the 117-934 this season there you see the interval between one and two [Applause] jeff would either won this race as you remember in the darkness back in 1984 sparks flying off the car bobby and you're inside the xerox bottle over here xerox car of alan kowicke who is running in 11th place alex cookie the leaders busting through definitely trying to close in earnhardt on the rusty wallace car and ricky rutt squares off it's a ford chevrolet battle up in front here's that battle in third and fourth rusty wallace there in car number 27 maintaining an excellent pace as the pontiac leads that chevrolet into the long back straightaway in fifth spot is terry labonte six is elliot seventh is petty kyle eighth is benny carson's ninth is mike waltrip well johnny hayes is a race fan loves to watch these two guys get together because they both are very aggressive and they both know that they're better than the other one you know and they're allowed to hit anything go sideways on anything but this is uh macho stuff right here and i'm sure buddy baker loves to see him come they macho around everybody but buddy because buddy uh he's not intimidated by those high school boys just kids well i'm noticing one thing if they're macho they better get with it because the front two cars right now are stretching out a pretty good lead over them and the front car in particular bodine look at him fly through the esses just leaning that car inside and outside thrashing back to third place and there goes earnhardt and the s's scoots by [Applause] the things that motivates dale earnhardt is an opportunity that he will have only a couple of more times here we're getting down to the end of riverside's history he's never won at this racetrack he wants in his career to win on every track where this series runs and if he doesn't get with the program he's only got two more shots of doing that he has come from eighth spot he is the charger in this field it's hard to pass at riverside he's passing people like uh well like dale earnhardt he's around the wallace and he's headed after the leaders now as he has moved to the third spot and he is definitely closing up on second place let's go back to those leaders again and quickly tell you that in ninth is bobby allison while 10th on the track is michael waltrip 11th this cowickie and 12th is harry gant jim robinson the west coast is currently 13. notice how lush and green it is out here riverside has never looked lovelier this is to be its last 500 mother nature certainly came forth and gave this track an extra special luster for this weekend here's ricky rudd's car in second place and the man of the hour earnhardt is trying to close in on it you have a chevrolet in first a poured in second chevy in third pontiac in fourth there you see the second place car of ricky rudd former winner here and cleans those cars here that's 200 pounds looks like it makes a big difference let's check the interval between this 15 car and earnhardt who is trying to close in on him get an opportunity here see just how much interval there you see here in heart in the number three back there in third wallace is in fourth levante fifth elliott six back to turn six the turn that took the life of joe weatherly back here in 1964 nasty corner here they are down to turn eight downhill that's really downhill isn't it buddy you can lose it and pitch it right out in the wilderness there it's definitely one of the toughest little corners on the whole of course uh you really use the brakes real hard and go ahead and get on the outside there you go right out in the desert well everybody has an opinion about this race track and now you watch the 27 being challenged a bit by terry lomani not that much so bonnie actually dropping the back of it there benny parsons told us about what this racetrack about what the toughest thing about adjusting the track was the biggest problem is that you're going to the right primarily and we always go to the left i mean you know uh you just get that little heart jumped up in your throat about every time you're going to turn nine turn six here because it is a right hand corner whereas back in the oval tracks we have made so many left-hand corners that it's your heart don't jump up like it does the riverside it's a heart pounder for sure as they come up here through that little cardiac canyon that leads up into turn number six those s's can really get you get off in there or have a little problem with your steering and you've got big problems well you've got a lot of problems if you drop off in the s's uh you also blind the vision of the car is coming and if you slide back out in the racetrack you get hit that's about 130 miles an hour you had steering go away there once again logan shepard around and uh esses right there you see the dust that he uh threw up but uh it's really not as bad this year because of the rain that we had he's got something uh a mess there yeah he's crawling crab like back toward the racetrack something truly a miss on morgan shepard his wife and baby daughter out here this morning he was all pumped up for this race but something happened to car number 26 the bernstein car let's take a look in the replay and we can see what happened here a guy with somebody and the other guy has got an identity on him he's trying to get underneath him spins off that richard petty or buddy errington there kind of look like their colors it was car it was a west coast car it was glenn strewer out of simi valley california the 81 car which is also a blue with red piping car so morgan shepard back underway again and dropping out of the top 20 here back with the leaders another time there is jeff podine in front as he has been from the outset came off the point in the second spot as ricky rudd and earnhardt closing all the time in third jeff bodine with five winston cup victories to his credit since 1979 he's earned over two million six hundred thousand dollars and going into turn one we have a bad smoker i think hershel mcgriff defending champion in the ser the west coast series is in trouble and there's a big oil down here indeed car number o4 has blown an engine and it is bringing out the first caution of the day first yellow flag will come out at lap eight while working lap eight herschel mcgriff 60 years old in december driving with a broken light today is off the track and he has poured oil and lubricant from the start line all the way into turn number one here's the look for the uh in car camera the super bowl camera and uh rick hendrick got a pretty good look at this guy right here as he went off the racetrack because rick had been following herschel around here for about three or four laps that's smart on hendrick's part because he's the rookie even though he's been around racing all his life he has a rookie driver on this racetrack and rick was just following herschel around herschel has driven i don't know three or four hundred races on this racetrack in a career that dates back into the 40s but now unfortunately herschel mcgriff has taken us off the racetrack into a yellow flag condition the cars are coming on pit road and we'll be back with more of the action of the western 500 right after this george fulmer at the present time has been shown as the leader alan kowicki has gone to second daryl waltrip iii ricky rudd the fourth dale earnhardt to fifth jeff bodine six bill schmidt in seventh rusty wallace in eighth ninth is bobby allison tenth with reuben garcia from the west coast and chad little 24 year old law student up in the state of washington the winston west champion now finds himself 11th overall off the field benny parsons is 12. as bill elliott and the rest of the field circulate here behind the pace car that's a an extra setback really for that team because they had a tough time here this year they struggled a little after winning the daytona 500 you see for the incar camera here alan kulwicki looking over the field you begin to get a sense here of the problems they have with the sun and the claire on this racetrack tough place to drive cars especially with the dust that buddy baker talked about earlier to get back to the elliott story they really regrouped here at the tail end of the season they had some tension in the team i've involved with the west coast guy who had come back and was helping them with the cars that just wasn't working out and ivan has left ernie reorganized things and it really got things back together they won two races in a row but now of course that crew is handicapped once again by the injuries that have befallen him here they really wanted to end this season with a sweep of the last two races field coming by and as they come up i think they're a lap away from a start with car number 29 george fulmer's car in first and number seven alan kowicke in second with a third spot daryl waltrip fourth spot is ricky rudd and then comes the the dale earnhardt car in fifth bodine is in six and they were the runners in the early going right up in front this has to really be so difficult for bill elliot he knows these people he likes these people they're part of a they're really a family out there and and how he gears himself back up and gets down to that hard hard part of this game which is focusing and staying directed at what he has in front of him it's gonna be very difficult well ken i think you understand and the fans this throws a dark cloud over this entire race because these people are families i think you see when everybody goes to volunteer the kind of friendship to kind of pull togetherness that we have there so it's important that everybody understands that these people even though they race each other hard they'll love each other and they'll do anything they can for each other it is a tough moment for elliot that is for sure rick hendrick is out here racing today and of course he has three different teams of cars in winston cup racing decided to give it a crack himself and he's been a pretty fair racer in other forms of motorsports over the years a millionaire chevy dealer who feels a powerful team in winston cup racing with daryl waltrip benny parsons and jeff lodine but this week he also is a rookie race driver he's making his winston tough debut [Music] yeah i've got all the bankers that i do business with are on valium i think this weekend and they're uh i don't know if they've got enough nerve to watch a race or not matter of fact one of them's coming out here to watch me but i've even got a friend of mine dr petty who's a neurosurgeon there and charlotte he's out here i think just in case i hit the wall but uh it was really the racing that got me in the automobile business and i've i've driven all my life i've driven go-karts and drag boats and uh you know road race cars and and this is kind of the top of the line this is the uh the big guys as beaudine tells me and you know the crew's been trying to get me to do it and so i guess i'll know a lot more about it i can you know i know what the crew chief goes through what the driver goes through and i think it'll improve my perspective of the sport by competing in this race and what about the added responsibility of the in-car camera you know i didn't think about that camera when i told them it was okay to put in the car and now uh one of the drivers said well you know there's one nice thing about that the whole world's gonna see every mistake you make so but uh you know i know all the excuses ken uh if you don't run good you don't have a good motor or you have a bad set of tires or you know the crew chief put in the wrong spring so whatever happens out here this weekend is not going to be my fault because i've been trained by the best and they've told me what to say so it's going to be somebody else's fault no matter what happens rick hendrick giving it a great shot here today bulletin on our story from pit road the injuries are being reported as non-critical not life-threatening and that is good news on chuck hill steve caldwell and port stevens injuries are non-critical not life-threatening that is the latest word from nascar in their booth one floor below us here on the start finish line at the riverside international raceway we are now showing 15 laps complete we have been under caution since the eighth lap when this incident took place and buddy baker let me ask you for just a moment when something like this happens you've raced so many times you've had situations developed like this in your career how do you refocus how do you get your the critical business of concentration back when friends and and real family to you have been injured as we've just seen here well you know uh our pet uh crew is only two spots away from the accident and it kind of got me like if it really happened and i was driving today it's kind of a thing you at the moment it's the most important thing racing is secondary and then you uh get a report like you just gave everybody everybody's okay uh they have injuries but it's not life-threatening and things like that it goes completely out of your mind and you go back to raising benny parsons once told me that when he saw his brother flipped 15 times in that terrible crash at talladega he said it was the worst moments of his life until his crew came on and said phil's fine and he said then i could put it out of my mind right back to the race i know what you're talking about i raced uh daytona against my dad and uh he had a bad accident coming off the second corner one time and when i come back by you know you really just want to stop and go over and do what you can but the best people in the world are working on these people to make sure they get to the hospital i come back by the next time he was standing out by the race car and putting him in the ambulance he waves to me nothing feels like that that's the greatest feeling in the world ken i think uh the beatty parsons story was a classic because i owned the race car at the time he drove and i owned phil's car and as phil flipped we all thought the worst and benny wanted to park the car very badly i ran to the hospital and phil was arguing with the people telling him not to cut his uniform off so i knew phil was okay right so i call benny and say it's okay and boom then he says change me four tires i'm ready to go to the front let's go to dave to spain at the stp pitt center the pole sitter has led every lap of this race thus far of course we've only run eight laps under green jeff beaudine won the bush pole here and he broke out of a big tie in the bush hole standings for the year we want to take a look at those standings and set the field for the first big race of 1988 which will be the bush clash bill elliot has locked up the 25 000 for winning the most polls this year then look at the rookie davey allison here you see beaudine he moves up into fifth spot in the standings behind him all the guys who have won a single poll this year and they bring the field for that race up to 12 drivers who will be working down at daytona next february the one name missing from that list for the first time in 13 years is daryl waltrip he was going for the pole here at riverside luke the car had to qualify the second day and ended up starting 27th if for the first time in 13 years daryl is going to go he's going to avoid going without a pole he's going to have to win the poll at atlanta in two weeks that's the bush pole report waltrip looped that car in the very first turn 13 years he gets one more shot atlanta and um and i don't know about the wild card situation potential for 14 starters in the bush clash come february at daytona here's the field and you see george fulmer and he is leading for the first time in a winston cup race since 1974 as they come down for the green flag they'll take it to the back straightaway they'll take it just after they come around this turn number eight and get ready to go here they are back under race conditions and breaking out in front as they take that green car number seven alan kawicki going forward and daryl waltrip on the inside the orange car waltrip and there's number seven here is earnhardt busting through as they come down underneath the bridge for the first time we find waltrip is in first and ricky rudd comes into second allen kowicki dropping into third back under green from the xerox in-car camera here they are around turn nine back to the start finish line at the strike they complete 17 laps shifting to the turn number one and you see a big challenge being put on to wiki's car that's earnhardt pulling alongside him area two leaders and you see earnhardt already pulling up in the third alan kowicki the little independent falling the fourth in that xerox car there's the number 15 ricky rudd seeking a second victory in this winston western 500 closing up on daryl waltrip who won it back to back in 80 and 81. alan kuwicki a bit high there for a moment and he's being challenged again beaudine is the man who's come into third pull wiki beaudine has come to third kawiki is fourth and earnhardt is right behind him now earnhardt's right in front of him there's bodine in the third and in fourth it is dale earnhardt with alan kawicki falling to fifth and in six is rusty wallace george fulmer back to seventh well i think when they started there i believe daryl walker the way he slung by everybody he probably said thanks a lot wandel that was nice power now look at this battle up in front and as we watch the leaders going down to into turn number one car number 15 has gone back in the league look at beau dying trying to dive beneath waltrip he gets right on the bottom of the racetrack around turn 930 miles an hour here and it's jeff beaudine sticking on the bottom of the track and he's going for second place ricky rudd in first bodine in the second daryl waltrip now deployed third earnhardt shaking loose comes up and fourth and rusty wallace who saw the move there as he swung to the inside takes fifth allen kowicki dropping to six look at earnhardt on the attack he may not have won here he's had a second place here but he sure uses up that racetrack let's talk for just a moment about those who use up that racetrack richard petty does a methodist job of that and so for that matter is joel rutman yeah they're all over the racetrack i was uh a little nervous when i realized that my car was starting directly behind richard petty i told him just go ahead and knock the windshield out and go get another one to put in about the first pistol because he gets out in the rocks and throws them at you yeah he'll throw more rocks than you can carry in him one day and of course buddy baker's car is being driven by uh irv hare from the international motorsports association brilliant young driver out of peoria illinois look at the battle up in front 15 and five the red car the ford is ricky rudd right with him is beaudine and bodine loves this turn nine he just flies in there flocks that chevrolet as he moves in on the ford let's go to jerry garrick for his observation here well ken we're down in the pits of sterling marlon the number 44 car right now there's a lot of consternation down here when they close pit roads no one could fit when they opened it back up finally after several laps there was an ambulance parked in sterling's pit he was not able to pitch as a result of that he has gone from second place to last on that restart he's now flying up through the field and his pick crew is trying to confer with the nascar officials get him repositioned in some equitable spot in this field because they don't think what happened to that was fair earnhardt in third and into fourth falls waltrip wallace in fifth kowicki in six bobby allison seventh as you see dale earnhardt trying to close in here rusty wallace is also on the move into the fifth position moving around to wiki it's amazing how well kawiki has done this year back to full song another time there's a very slow card just in front of those leaders off the pace just a bit looks a little like george bulmer's car but i can't believe it that is car 81 that's in trouble glenn stewart from simi valley california that's off the face look at beaudine once again driving it outside buddy well you know when he qualified he was much quicker through turn nine than any car that uh qualified and that seems to be a strong suit but ricky rudd is using a lot of racetrack getting into uh nine and he can't make his move and those two together are pulling away just a tickle from car number three dale earnhardt in the third position waltrip in fourth wallace in fifth going six is alan kawicki and he's about to get some heavy pressure from bobby allison well bobby allison's always been a great great road racer he's doing a heck of a job today he's coming up through the field and bobby's aggressive but he's also smooth and he's smart he will take care of the car and use it when it's necessary [Music] leaders around turn six down the hill there's no turn seven on this track turn has been disregarded for some time here they are same turned eight slide away negative cameras and ricky rudd stays out in front two previous winners in first and second a man seeking his first win here dale earnhardt he has won 11 races this year being trailed by daryl waldron and pulling away from him boy a lot of power out of that lula rosa engine car number three here's bobby allison trying to close up now here comes the alan kawiki car remember that's in six bobby allison right there with him and also parsons parsons in the 35 terry lavonny back there here's bobby allison's number 22 around turn nine and trying to close in on number seven alan kowicki number three is pity earnhardt comes on pit road unexpected stop for earnhardt richard childress team ready for him as he pits all the way on the far end i'm sure he cut down a tire this is the kind of thing you face at riverside those tires are thin they get hot you can push a rock through them very easily and that's just the kind of problem you have here so you just have to go for it and change them 12 and 110 seconds for tires on car number three and that is a great stop that is a great stop dale earnhardt back on the course as you see the field rumbling up on him here there's chad little league guy that just won the winston west championship right behind earnhardt back with the leaders again ricky rudds number 15 staying on the point and perched on his rear bumper here comes beaudine looking again here's beaudine trying to draw alongside they're even at 180 miles per hour who's going to lift first rudd pulled over and gave him room to go by so i'm sure ricky said well i pulled you down that straight away seven or eight laps i'll let you try and i'd like to follow you a while and see if i can't work on your rear bumper like you've been working on mine big boy here they are car number 15 ricky rudd back to second place now beaudine man it's set on the pole now back in first chevrolet leads it florida's in second chevrolet is in third rusty wallace's pontiac is in fourth then it's alan kawicki back there in his board in fifth position there's that battle developing now for third spot daryl waltrip has his rear-view mirror full of car number 27. i just noticed when daryl and uh rusty come through nine he'd give him a little shot to let him know where he was at he's getting his attention i wouldn't be surprised to see uh rusty get by daryl pretty quick here he's on the move see that isn't done in road racing road race people don't see that kind of thing happen you don't go up and tap somebody's bumper that's just regular stuff out there well it's not being mean it's just letting him know that you're fixing to make a move and if he don't plan to pick up the pace you're gonna make a move on him oh yeah buddy baker's not being mean to knock him off into the third turn i just told him i didn't want to hold me up but let me tell you something poor old daryl looked back there a while ago he had earnhardt said oh lord knight looks back here comes a crazy rusty wallace so uh he's sitting there saying i can't relax let's go to the pits and pat patterson the story on dale earnhardt's car is this flat tire as they've already marked it here now we told you earlier that you can get into this kind of trouble at riverside and that's exactly what has plagued the number three car a flat tire that caused the pit stop and it lost dale earnhardt's valuable time earnhardt has dropped out of the battle this is the battle right now it is for third and fourth waltrips number 17. poor old daryl there trying to hold off the number 27 look at wallace down on the inside they'll come to the wire dead even and that'll give walter some advantage as they come into the left-hander no a great move by rusty wallace and he is around daryl walter one quick note poor old daryl has come from 27th starting spot he really got the benefit of that yellow flag the three cars that qualified one two three are ahead of him and then comes the 27th qualifier daryl walter so he has solved one of his big problems today and that was how to get to the front for just a moment daryl waltrip owned rusty wallace for a split second they're headed right on the outside it could have been disastrous and they just ease on through now you see them with rusty wallace in third daryl waltrip in fourth the leaders meanwhile are still jeff podine and ricky rudd running nose to tail for first place here in our live coverage on the superstation of the winston western 500 there's more to come lots more action so stay tuned 25 of 119 laps complete you're watching car number three that is dale earnhardt fighting his way back to the field he dropped to 29th after he had to come in for tire chains he's just passing davey allison closing up on jim robinson three-time winston west champion up in front bodine leads rudd second wallace third walter fourth allison fifth and flying parsons six lavani seventh kawiki eighth kyle petty is ninth harry gana's intent let's go back up with those leaders another time and here they are still stuck together just as they were earlier jeff godin had his biggest payday 1986 daytona when he took that one home out in front ricky rudd rambling along in second place in the butt more forward then there's a bit of an interval back to third where rusty wallace has the pontiac so it's chevrolet ford pontiac one two three here at this juncture of the winston western 500 live on the super station this afternoon you're riding with jeff podine here as he just guides this car this 3 500 pound car so gingerly around turn number nine and flat puts it back toward turn number one [Applause] jeff budine out in front he works really hard to be a good racer road racer i try to do you know i guess i go back to running roads back in shimonga as a kid in high school all those dirt roads and wine kirby rose up through the mountains gave me some practice i guess maybe for road racing i don't know but it seemed like the first time i got into a road race i enjoyed it i did well i really do enjoy road racing and maybe that's part of it if you enjoy something you do it better or you try harder i don't know what it is but it's a lot of fun there you see jeff budion out there having a lot of fun in car number five as he continues to lead on this treacherous nine turn riverside international 2.6 mile road course ricky rod stays right in second up to 22nd has moved earnhardt he was in 29th he picked his way through and bill elliot's car is now showing as 15. and the report is that none of those injuries are critical on those three mechanics that were hit on pit road back at lap eight and we'll update you on that story again as soon as possible they have assistance from other pit crews for the elliott team as they swap back and forth among teams out there to help elliott through this crisis that happened early in today's race his crew depleted dan elliott was also knocked down he is fine he was with us on the telecast for a few moments and elliot is out here trying to gather it back up assisting that depleted elliott pit crew will be two men from daryl waltrips crew and two from the junior johnson crew terry labonte's race team there you see bodine getting a little breathing room now he's got almost three car lengths that's the biggest lead anyone has enjoyed in this race george palmer briefly that now you see walter from the 17 car he's back there in fourth chasing rusty wallace who is in third waltrip around turn six [Music] having a lot of pressure coming up from behind him bobby allison benny parsons terry labonte are hooked up together coming after him there's a slow car in between but it won't be long daryl will have his hands full you can see everybody coming into the camera right now that slow car is tom kendall the young driver from ucla who was the imsa champion gtu car number 76. for the last two years the international motorsports association one car slowing dramatically here just like sterling marlin and bobby allison's car thundering down into turn number nine followed by danny parsons allison in that fifth position carson's in six then he's definitely closing up in here buddy arrington scooting by cannons you notice bobby allison's closing in really fast on waltrip and he's bringing benny and those guys with him but as this racetrack gets slicker bobby allison gets better and better i'll tell you he's about to pass the car as uh anybody out there right now and if he gets a few breaks he'll be right up there hammering with bowdoin and the 83-time winner two-time winner of this race bobby allison is definitely closing ground all the time here there you see this little trio it's bobby allison followed by denny carson and right behind them terry lavonnie fifth sixth and seventh up over turn six and closing in on daryl walker for number 17. all three of those fellas are great road racers terry labonte told me yesterday morning said boy it used to be really fun to come out here when there's only two or three of us could run this road course but now it's a lot tougher here we are with the superflow in-car camera rick kendrick storming along still out here looking pretty good running 21st or 22nd now on the field in the super bowl in car camera machine folger's car back with car number 17. waltrip hands full and about to have his arms and everything full out here of course number 22 bobby allison let's go back to that leader and there you see car number five beau dying getting a little more room over ricky rudd as he draws the beat on winning here his second winston western 500 definitely the man that's going to be in trouble here momentarily is daryl walter he's trying to fend off three guys who have real intentions of taking fourth place away from it there you see second place ricky rudd [Music] wallace is back there in third it's live today at the super station beaudine for the moment looking pretty good we have one car off the course easing down the bottom though they get off they're getting that looks like a blown engine out there that's more than just getting off the course yeah he's definitely out of here [Applause] i wonder if that is tom kendall's car i'm talking about just moments ago one of the west coast cars [Music] again there's one thing about anything that happens like this i imagine rick hendricks i was watching him a few minutes ago i bet he's wondering right now how slick will this thing actually get with all these blown motors and cars sliding all around and it's really getting let's go to uh jerry garrett on pit road well we're down here with sterling marlin whose troubles continue he mentioned earlier that he had an ambulance in his pit when he tried to pit earlier and had to go from second place on the track to last he was right behind dale erner coming back up through the pack but now he's broken his shifter and he's had to have his crew put it in high gear for him to get out of the pits here and he's gonna have a real tough time the rest of the day i think here he is back on the track car number 44. sterling marlon in the billy hagan car and the driver is okay and i think that is kendall that is tom kendall youngster 21 years old has a great future in racing strong road racer he's going to go to the imsa banquet up in michigan on monday night where he will take the gtu championship for the second year but a very short day after a wild ride here's car number five beaudine in the lead ricky rudd in seconds they continue to lap cars and waltrip back here in the 17 is really beginning to feel a lot of pressure the 27 car of rusty wallace maintaining third daryl waltrip is in fourth and as that car comes around turn eight the wall trip car he has bobby allison bobby allison right there with him allison runs in the fifth position benny parsons is in six terry labonte is in seventh watch it this battle brings back some fun memories of our previous telecast here at riverside remember old dw and bobby allison in the 17-22 now battling for the championship coming right down to the wire here in riverside year after year bobby's going to try daryl on the outside oh that's a long way around is he going to get it how about that move those two cats between them have won 11 races on this racetrack you're talking about a couple of serious riverside roars right there but how about bobby allison daryl's going to the pits yeah here's waldrop on pitt road here's jerry garrett well believe it or not ken this is a scheduled pit stop for daryl because he also was locked on his fit approach during that last yellow by the ambulance so he didn't get to come in he has to come in now for fuel this is a regular outside tire stop and he's going to be getting no chassis adjustments two cans of fuel and just those left side tires he's back out of the way it's like 17 seconds for car number 17. as daryl waltrip rejoins the field beaudine and rudd continue their own personal vendetta up in front here's waltrip back out we'll check his position down for you as beaudine leads advantage maybe four car lengths over second place ricky rudd wallace in third allison and fourth parsons now to fifth labonte the sixth harry gand in seventh what about the range on these cars today well they're i talked with a bunch of people before and they were hoping somewhere around 78 miles around 30 laps would be normal to come in and check and make sure everything's going okay after they do that they can adjust on the next stop and say we may get 82 or 83 miles it depends because of the gas sloshing everything going on you have to have sophisticated fuel pickup it's a very complicated thing this thing can be won on gas mileage so bodine who usually has pretty good range gary nelson is a master of making a car run a long way as is ernie elliott currently is in front and after one long caution created after an incident on pit road this race settles down into a jeff bodine chevrolet versus ricky rudd court battle with rusty wallace's pontiac in third and dale earnhardt continuing to slice through the field and get back into this thing he's currently running in 15th place back with more in a moment here's ernie irvine's car this is sponsored by dale earnhardt started out in california moved to the east to get started and he spun just a few moments to go up here and turn nine there's there's mike waltrips carnival 30 looping for a moment look what you can see now there's the number 30 and you can see what a dust cloud he put up here's ernie urban down here he loops it right in turn nine critical part of the track got it around and he didn't touch anything he's able to continue on and no caution let's take a look at what happened to michael waldrop in the all-pro car is michael getting off made a correction to try to get it back made another correction try to get it back made another correction oh me boy he looked like he had the eraser out on that didn't he who has a major spin there he's all right and he continues on and there is no no caution on the track here's ernie irvan what a story there is in ernie irvin when dale earnhardt is on the racetrack you either love him or you hate him his aggressive driving style has been a major topic of fans throughout this season and drivers well i'm a tough racer ken and but i'm a good person in person as far as everyday life i get along and do things for people and hand in hand if you're an anti-earnhardt fan you probably couldn't believe dale could ever be mr nice guy especially to one of his competitors rookie ernie urban says there's a major misconception about dale earnhardt the driver and the man ernie irvin should know he's benefited from the side of earnhardt that many fans don't realize exists in the form of crucial support in his first year of winston cup racing you know he's helped us on our race car and you know i mean he's took it in himself to help us and you know we didn't ask him a lot you know we talked to him and you know he decided to do it and you know that just shows he is kind too it may sound odd earnhardt supporting another team whose ultimate goal is to unseat the champion ernie says there's only one stipulation he tells me when he catches catches me he says i better get out of the way you know and i really feel he's joking because if i did get out of the way i you know really don't think that's the kind of driver he wants me to be he wants me to race hard like he does and that's what i try to do urban's plan fear include running for rookie of the year and eventually beating earnhardt out of his crown well he's got a lot more standing in line in front of him but i'm going to get on him for just wanting to win the rook of the year the first year i'll be going for the championship too so i'll have to get on if i'm gonna sponsor him he's gonna have to be a little tougher than that [Music] ernie irvine is giving it a good shot he's currently running in 35th on the track and you were seeing him and you'd see cars all over this place and it looks a little like rommel's invasion of the desert out here this afternoon a lot of interesting lines are up to this racetrack on how to get through those those s's and several other corners let's get back with the leaders again jeff bodine for the moment is out in front ricky rudd is in second rusty wallace is in third bobby allison's fourth and there you see the jeff bodine car continuing to dominate the race he's come off the pole his second pole of 1987 and after 25 laps let's review the field for you give you a look at some of your favorites who may be a little further back than what we've been focusing on in these top 10 or 15 of this road course that's as of 25 laps complete with leader beaudine approaching turn number eight ricky rudd is about six car lengths back from the leader and beaudine he'll run that thing until the wheels come off this happen he really likes the road race he really does and i tell you he he's the type of guy that uh runs martinsville well daytona well and gets on the road course and he's a tremendous driver there he's just an all-around good race driver period he said an interesting thing about this racetrack you see how herb hair is running in 16th there uh jeff was talking the other day he says you know if they lose this place they'll be losing a page from the history books of motor racing and i think that sums up how a lot of folks feel we may be watching our last winston western 500 here there's plans to run here next june but after that big question mark about the future of this track is housing tracks all around this area continue to move in on it and for several years we've been running the last riverside here's connor 27 rusty wallace getting ready to pit as we watch our leader here and there's chad little winston west champion just 24 years old and he's won the championship of the west coast rusty wallace who's maintaining third spot is on the pit road at this time change of tires for rusty rusty wallace has one of the top pick crews in racing harry gaines coming right in behind right in behind him if we just bring our camera back you'll see harry gantz number 33 in there as well there's rusty pulling out and parsons is also pitted so they're all coming in for fuel here and bodine staying out i say all three of them came in at this point and that battle of the range just how far you can carry a car and a tank of fuel gets critical at this time in the event we are now showing some 37 laps complete 37 well you know we said earlier they were all hoping to get 30 and the caution came out somewhere around the eighth lap so a lot of people are being a little conservative they want to make sure they get that tank all the way full because if you run out of gas here you're in big trouble if you run out down there since i had to send a truck out to get you the uh story on car number five is he made pit right now he's coming down patterson is there gary nelson's award-winning pit crew will go to work on the leader jeff bodon in the yellow and white car rodon brings the car smoothly into the pitch as they'll go to the left side of the driver's side of the car and change two tires take on two loads of fuel here and no chassis adjustment on the car as bodano look to get back out as quickly as possible they will not change four will only be two and modine is down and away bobby allison has also pitted at this time so ricky rudd has appropriated first position here in our coverage of the western 500 on the superstation kyle petty's bringing his car in dale earnhardt gets a chance to run a little further he will definitely be moving through the field now and getting a chance to run back up on those leaders with these pit stops i'd like to ask johnny hayes a question about that fuel mileage situation or baker either for that matter uh these guys as we mentioned went into that long yellow at about lap eight most of them came in right away and then the pits were closed and they couldn't come back in we're at 38 now so they've essentially run about 30 laps but they ran nearly a third of that under a yellow flag and my question on this racetrack where we've seen the race won and lost by a late stop for fuel were they able to learn anything there about their gas mileage or does the fact that so many of those laps were under yellow render all that information useless no i think they do learn quite a lot from it they can examine they can estimate and figure well we're getting 3.8 under green and we're getting 4.8 under caution i think those kind of things they do figure because they do have fuel specialists ricky rudd's coming down pit road leader is on pit road ricky rutt bringing number 15 you see him pulling right in front of the superflow in car camera of rick hendrick folger's car coming back on the track you should come right by number 15 there you see him and car number 15 rudd is in putting on left side rubber we're talking about great pit crews and all these teams we're watching year in year out these are best and the reason they're the best is they've been together forever that bud moore crews been together since buddy baker was 17 years old ran his first race i think toward the 40 lap mark a 23 second stop here almost 24 on ricky rudd and that will be costly usually that but more crew is snappy well one thing i noticed about ricky rudd several of the cars that have stopped took on two tires he took on four that may be a decided advantage in just a few moments because the car will run quite a bit faster before new jersey so we'll pick up a new leader for you here in just a moment we're watching car number 78 idle down on the pit road another time and as we get to this point in the race it is fuel stops that are the order of the day in the wizards of western 500 at riverside california we had a moment early in this round where carr number three had to pit early that was in the last 10 or 15 laps call up this round between the last fuel stop and fell back back to 25th spot earnhardt will find himself right back up with the leaders now as they've also pitted he's into the top five for sure we're waiting for official documentation from nascar as to exactly where earnhardt is for a moment terry lavonny had the lead but he's giving it up now and he is pitting in that very first spot looks to me like number nine elliott would be the second pit in where we had this major incident early in the going three members of the bill elliott crew were taken to the hospital there seems to be good news on that we're waiting for a further hospital report in the background there you see the fuel going into the body's car terry's regular fuel man wayne dalton when bill elliot was in a few moments ago fueled bill elliot's car billy hodges from the tide machine rick hendricks number 17 driven by daryl waldrop went over and jacked up bill elliott's ford jeff chandler off that same team filled up the car tours team regulars mike thomas and ernie elliott handle the tire changes a community effort to keep bill elliott out on the racetrack after that early incident and buddy baker whose race car is that anyway what's going on here i don't know they pushed it all the way down the pit road it looks like they've got a major problem with it maybe the shifters that don't or a transmission they're in something's major wrong with it they can't get it refired jerry garrett can tell you the answer to what's happened to your car with their repair out there there he goes well buddy it was i guess kind of a rookie mistake he just seemed to kill it when he was going out of the pits in the hot engine they had a hard time pushing it uphill as you know that spits her uphill to get it started well he's doing a good job in the car i know what it's like to have one die in the hips like that it's not a rookie mistake we all make it why now buddy i want to know though are you shirking your responsibilities here now you're the car owner should you be down there giving that young boy some coaching instead out there fooling around with the likes of johnny hayes and ken squire no irv hare is a fine racer and uh he's won 14 out of his last 19 i'm so racist he's uh doing a super job we've learned a lot about the chassis this week working with him he'll be fine plus the other problem that buddy has is irv's a lot smarter than buddy and they took up a collection on pit road and they raised forty thousand dollars to put buddy up here and irv down there i don't know if they were afraid to race against you buddy or they didn't want you out there with them what was the real story well it's kind of like you johnny you know you and i are in the same mental capacity so it was kind of a swap off they put us up here and put again that controlled us this week they wanted you out of the pets and me off the racetrack yeah this is closed captioning for those who don't understand southern what i need is a whip and a chair and a frank buck hat here's jeff bodine back in front now and rusty wallace has come to second with dale earnhardt third ricky rudd fourth benny parsons fifth bobby allison six herrigan is in seventh phil parsons is up into eighth in ninth as daryl waltrip and intent as terry lavonny but the man of the hour as he has been since the outset is jeff beaudine here he is in one of the hendrick racing stables cars leading here in the winston western 500 more of the moment there's a nice view of one of the loveliest spots in southern california today not only scenic but lovely at that standpoint but very very attractive for all of us race fans watching history made once again here at riverside here in the stp pit communication center leaderboard is empty that's because we've taken everybody over next door let's take a walk and see who the real hard chargers here in this race are thus far true value hardware stores keeps track of the hard chargers in winston cup racing with their true value hard charger award it works like this in every race every lap pays points five deleted four for second three for third two for fourth and a point for fifth the guy who accumulates the most points in the race receives 1500 the guy who charges hardest all year long wins 25 grand thus far in this event beaudine and rudd are really close they've been swapping the lead back and forth creating those five and four point laps george fulmer got a lot of laps under the yellow when that uh incident occurred early in the race wallace and earnhardt are down in fourth and fifth spot these are the guys that are charging right now let's get back to the action jeff budding has won two million six hundred fifteen thousand dollars trying to add to that amount this afternoon here at riverside california stays in front rusty wallace has now gone to second and ricky rudd is in third dale earnhardt is maintaining that fourth position and he is coming earnhardt trying to make amends for never having won this race and give richard childress his 12th win of the season looks like he may be ready to next 30 or 40 laps to get right up here and mix it up with this man beaudine originally out of shaman new york spent a lot of time in new england modified ranks racing for dick armstrong racing stable now and winston cup he is a fixture after his great victory at daytona in a red letter day for him he won 160 000 dollars or something his best payday ever here he is in first one thing we have to remember about dale earnhardt he is out of sync with everybody else on the pit stop because of the cut down tire and we've gone green all this time dale's going to have to pit pretty soon and that's going to put it back out of sync well we can perhaps get an interval here between that first and second place car of bodine and rusty wallace closing in wallace's pontiac remember wallace won at watkins glen on that road course earlier this year i think it's going to be about 11 seconds a little over 10 seconds between first and second spot now as benign continues to pile up a bit of a lead which is a surprise for some here today didn't set any records in qualifying but he certainly is putting together a good run at this time earnhardt fourth benny parsons fifth bobby allison sixth terry labonte in seventh harry gantt is in eight darrell waltrip is in ninth and phil parsons is in that tenth spot that's how they stand with a total of 45 of the 119 laps complete in this 389 000 next to last race of the 1987 season now let's see if we can get interval between first and second spot to give you an idea of how far back indeed rusty wallace is as he tries to close in here and get back up with that leader there you see the earnhacker there is the number 27 which is running in the second spot then ricky rudd a couple of spots back buddy airing his car drops on the inside there there is the 15 try and there's number three earnhardt earnhardt's in fourth and right there you saw the number 35 that green car of benny parsons which is rotting in fifth one of the folger's car here's parsons moving right along at a good clip he does well on the road course doesn't he been he's always been one of the best at riverside every time he comes here he gets around very well he's come close to winning here several times he finished second to bill elliott when he won his first race here from the xerox in car camera here's alan kowiki working at it up at turn number six closing up on the red baron car number 90. ken schrader who won here yesterday schroeder came home victorious in yesterday afternoon's encounter with a brilliant ride there's harry gallardo's number 14 one of the west coast drivers remember there's a war within a war the west coast kids get a chance to come out here and try to show their stuff well i think the west coast people had their feelings hurt a little bit here come the winston cup people into their hometown and they get all the credit and i tell you these boys have done a good job for themselves trying to show their callers and get up in here it's been some time since they've had a winner out here to go back to the alfalfa farm elizabeth the last one that won out here here's 27 and 15 continuing their battle for second place let's remember that ricky rudd changed four tires when a lot of those people chose to change two and buddy pointed out immediately he said that was a good call and you watch ricky rudd come up through the crowd so now i know why buddy baker's so smart and not a banker or something owns a racism congratulations there you go you just watch him going in the nine here he'll put a move on him if you're not careful man the next couple of left that card flying in the nut and the other one that's flying is that blue and yellow colors the richard childress car running just back of car number 15 he's back about 30 car lengths but closing all the time and notice how the sun bothers you on this racetrack no matter where you go sooner or later it gets you get you good here's pat patterson well kenneth schrader came out to riverside and practiced a lot earlier last week to try to get ready for this one and he's got problems this afternoon it's the clutch linkage on his car that's going to slow him down so you may keep an eye on him in the tower as you see him having a hard time getting in and out of the pit area struggled for second place here wallace's pontiac under heavy challenge from car number 15 ricky rudd dale earnhardt just watching as these two dish it out coming up through the s's another time wallace wanting his second roadways win of the season there now here we are back into turn number eight ricky's gonna show it you know those tires are gonna go away after a while this kind of a skirmish richard petty in car number 43 is on pit road he's running 11th on the field right now 311 miles 500 kilometers the distance today i still want to see him win one more race i definitely want to see him win that 200 in the first here's richard back underway up little ring as he came out dropping his cup of water there we're getting uh some reports on that incident and battle on that second second place battle i think is getting pretty good right now as rusty wallace is having a time out there with ricky rudd here's a car that's throwing a little bit of smoke in trouble and there's davey allison maybe allison hasn't had a call in some time he's not having a good day davey allison running back outside of the top 15 at this time right in front of him is jimmy means jimmy has a good run this afternoon remember he drove one of the hendrick cars in charlotte north carolina was a terrible crash in the 22nd lap one of the best light drivers out here in the event sobo dyne stays first on a beautiful day at riverside california here you see him at turn eight ricky rudd is in second and rusty wallace is in third we discussed jeff lodine's feelings about the possible closing of riverside with him and here's some other insight he gave us a lot of tradition a lot of history behind his track i've won a race here and i thank god i have now i have a poll here and so that's good but i want to come back many many years and win more races win more polls so i don't want to see it go but go they say it will the last winston western 500 is this day in california you're watching it live on the super station home of the nba car number five stays in the lead with a pretty healthy advantage now of about 12 seconds over ricky rudd in second and rusty wallace in third dale earnhardt in fourth and earnhardt continues to move at a very very good clip as if he wants to get back into it we've been checking and getting an update for you as to the condition of those folks that were hurt on pit road in lap eight on the bill elliot car and let's let's get to that now what have we learned john well chuck hill has a broken right arm but everything else is fine chuck's gonna be fine steve caldwell will shook up a little bit but he's fine butch stevens has a broken leg everyone knows butch that you buy all your race parts from him and we're sorry that happened but they're all doing fine well that's good news and now we see earnhardt on pit road who had been rotting in fourth place he's coming in making a right side to going all the way around on rubber here on dale earnhardt's car so it's good news on those people that were hit by a car on pit road and not life-threatening not life endangering for those three right if you noticed everybody on pit road notices how well ricky rudd's running now making the four tire change and they're all going to that on the pit stops it's only about four or five more seconds to change the right side so everybody will probably be changing four tires on stops instead of two so jeff budine stays out in front here in the winston western 500 as the laps continue to unreal 49 laps now complete more in a moment live from riverside california watching the winston western 500 and watching dale earnhardt here after his pit stop he has been relegated to the 11th position on the field as he thrashes that big chevrolet back looking for his 12th win of the season toward the front of the field as he continues to make his own personal go at jeff bodine in first ricky rudd in second wallace in third parsons in fourth terry labonte in fifth let's take a look at other motorsports activities taking place this weekend around the nation and the world and go to our gm good wrench motorsports update thanks ken as you well know the nascar season wraps up in atlanta in two weeks but for a couple of series this is the grand finale weekend just up the road in pomona the nhra finals which were rained out last weekend are being held dick lahaye and also joe amato battling it out for top fuel season honors cincinnati's mark oswald the top qualifier in funny car also on that one bob glidden the eight-time national champ once again the top man in pro stock yesterday in saint petersburg florida the trans am series held their all-star event the fast five shootout series champ scott pruitt in the number two car led most of the way however he ran over some debris flattened both right side tires teammate pete holzemer in the number three went from third to first held off elliott forbes robinson to win a 7 000 first place prize not bad for about 13 minutes work the final trans am event of the year is being held this afternoon incidentally earlier this week lloyd frank the organizer of the imsa race in west palm was arrested as part of a major drug bust in south florida well that's it for this gm good wrench update let's go back upstairs to ken thank you bob richardson just as you began that we came under caution only for debris not a serious incident on the track it cautioned and jeff budine made his pit stop came back out again this will bunch up the field check down the number of cars as you see more activity on pit road there you see the wall trip car just in front of elliott you also see the problem we have they don't have enough room the cars there's three four cars stacked in one car sticking out on pit road now you can see why you have the accidents like we had and i think that shouldn't happen jerry garrett is down there quite a tough situation he knows all kinds of different people wearing uniforms working on that coors car that's because they've had a lone crew member from different teams to help out the elliott crew since all their crew members got hurt but all three cars were in here at the same time so who works on what car when as we watch daryl waltrip come back out onto the racetrack he has another problem besides the traffic jam we've seen him get to the front thanks to the yellow and the long caution early he got trapped out of the pits by the ambulance that let him get up to the front of the field but the car is not handling the way they would like he looked at practice and he never got it quite right again all week he was trying to get the ball and didn't now they hope that this yellow flag will give the opportunity to get the handling back and let him make a run at the leaders thank you david 53 of 119 laps have been completed here today 53 down in this 398 thousand dollar go they sort out the field from this caution period and i believe after the yellow we're going to see beau dyne as the leader and earnhardt in second with rudd in third and we'll also find rusty wallace in fourth benny parsons in fifth we're still under caution for debris on the track that is the second caution of the day after a lengthy one early johnny hayes earnhardt got a real good break he had just come in to pit put on four new tires had plenty enough room not to get left he goes back out caution comes out he moves from the back of the field back up to second so everyone can get ready for earnhardt bodine to shoot it out and dale will be looking forward to that jeff will be looking over his shoulder and rick hendrick continues to do a dandy job in his first winston cup race his debut fairly auspicious he may want to replace one of his own drivers out there i think they're under a great deal of pressure here today as from our super flow in car camera in the folger's car we see hendrick back on the track well it would save him a lot of money if all the car owners could do this that's the reason buddy baker drives his car it saves him about four or five hundred thousand a year he told me that earlier so if rick can eliminate drivers he can save himself with three teams i think probably me and a half to two million i think this could be a whole new deal hal nida probably is going to try to replace harry again i think this could be a whole new deal well i can get danny schiff to drive a backup car then we got to cover it but you know all the way i wouldn't go quite that far i don't know if i'd put danny in the car here's number 44. billy hagan car and billy is a pretty good driver he's i'm surprised he isn't out here road racing he's been to le man that man that owns the number 44 you just saw on on pit road field is under caution there you see them at least one more lap before they turn them loose here today and we'll see bodine first earnhardt second ricky rudd third wallace fourth benny parsons fifth bobby allison in six and let's not discount the red and white colors of number 22 this afternoon terry lobotti's in seventh harry gantt is in eight ken schrader ninth kyle petty tenth daryl waltrip is 11th bill elliott in 12th these are all in the lead lap and the 13th is phil parsons with 14th morgan shepard well i think a great thing starting to happen because they found out that hal needham says he can drive a car if rick hendricks can't all these people are starting so i think we could get a race going this track has caused a few sleepless nights for a lot of drivers and particularly for this guy here buddy arrington from martinsville virginia his first memories of this road course first time i came up here so i had to do something like so i got in the road car and i go out down and ride around and i got it you know i was riding automatically won't change the gears i got balled up on my gears where i was going what i was doing but when i got up on top of the hill turned eight i guess it would be you know you really make a sharp turn you come right back right that's where you've been from almost kiss your real bumper you know and here i go wide open i didn't see the turn you know it's kind of a hump i still wide open when i get out there and i gotta turn right and there i go right through the booming through the mud and the dirt and everything else and uh i come back i thought well i won't forget that one go back out there after put my tires on get my spoiler beat back up go up and do the same thing again and i thought well now what am i going to do here so finally i got it down but that that's i always remember that when i come to riverside that's my spot on top of the hill he's running 30th well leo jackson with the skull team gets the class act of the race award buddy arrington came to him yesterday afternoon phil parsons had had a problem did not qualify buddy arrington asked him not to because if phil did but he would not make the race and wouldn't get to use a provisional and leo said okay we won't qualify phil parsons started 38 and the reason he did he was trying to help out buddy a lot of cooperation a lot of paternal feeling a lot of these drivers out here there is good news on that elliott crew there have been some injuries there have been some broken bones but they certainly look life-threatening when we saw it here from the start finish line now we're back under green again just taking up the green flag beaudine pops out in front and staying right with him comes dale earnhardt in the number three car for second place ricky rudd is in third and now you get a look at alan kawicki from the viewpoint xerox in car camera that shows you as he comes into turn nine how he works that wheel looks pretty easy at his job for 130 180 135 miles an hour on that part of the racetrack makes it look really not that easy no here they are back to the line with beaudine in first earnhardt in second ricky rudd in third there's a couple of lap cars ricky rudd has wheeled around them and ricky wright finds himself allowed earnhardt on the sort out going down to turn nine rudd was able to make a move in the thunderbird gets himself in the second spot that relegates earnhardt to third he's got some catching up to do wallace back there and forth through the s's all bunched up bunch of cars running in the lead lap here well over it does we'll count them off for you more than that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] we now have 18 cars rotting in the lead lap in a bunch this 119 lap event with 55 laps complete here's ricky rudd in second place seeking jeff podine this man the leader and he's got him back within his sights and here comes earnhardt and the yellow and blue car there in third spot right behind them that might be rusty wallace's car there's rusty wallace's car there's a lap car in between earnhardt and rusty wallace following wallace with benny parsons in the decaffeinated car and then comes bobby allison terry labonte and harry gam interesting sponsors in winston cup racing these days more and more food product i always think of this as cars and fires and oils aftermarket products no longer so piedmont car is half sponsored by underalls well i think what's happening in racing is that uh this thing's gotten so expensive you had to build special cars special motors you're even having to go to associate sponsors like a detroit gasket like an exxon all these other companies must come in to help you pay the bill but these companies are using this as a research and development department and it's a little cheaper than building your own race track and abusing all your parts so if you buy a part that comes off of these race cars it has been abused right in front of america so you do know that that part will hold up i don't think i want to part off any one of these cars after they finish today however there is going to be a close-out sale right after this race so if anybody's looking for cars transmissions motors just meet us in the garage area jeff budin stays first ricky rudd maintaining second with dale earnhardt in third rusty wallace is fourth parsons fifth terry lobotti six bobby allison in seventh more in a moment in the winston western 500 here riverside california this is the battle for ninth number nine bill elliot is up in there they're challenging kyle petty just barely in front of them kyle is in that ninth position number 21 then comes the nine intent and the 17 in 11th there you see kyle petty bottom of the frame shooting through and trying to sort himself out from some other automobiles bill elliot trying to move up that spot right in front of them is chad little the winston west champion and they say out here that he could be the next superstar to come from the west coast a lap being put on him by elliott and by number 17 and a lot of smoke off waltrips car that's tire smoke he gets up there high the car gets loose but as you said earlier the car's not been handling real well and he's slowing people up behind and you see the field coming up to daryl daryl just has a handling problem right now i'm sure they'll try to adjust it on next pit stop so daryl waltrip in the number 17 twice a winner in this race bill elliot won here a couple of seasons back back three seasons back won his first major race right here trying to get back up in front of those leaders well ken down here in the pits we want to update you a little more on the condition of the the crewman dan elliott who was in the pits after that we talked to him he's left the pits now and he's going to be looked at he doesn't believe there's anything seriously wrong but he wants to be checked out he's complaining of the sore shoulder i think that later in the race here he won't see the number nine car bill elliott's car come in at the same time the daryl waltrip car or that terry labonte's car comes in here to pit because they've had to work out a little arrangement if they're going to share pit crew and they can't all hit on the same lap well there you see bobby hillen's car in serious trouble front end ripped up and now he's coming to a halt where he is that's a very precarious place i may have to put a caution flag back out around and get him out of there halfway in the race we're halfway home i believe they will have to come after him because uh he's sitting in a terrible spot he's trying to get back i think off the track but the caution should come out for that look at the smoke billowing out from behind waltrips number 17 here he comes off that corner he's got some serious problems beginning to develop there that number 35 car right with him watching daryl waltrip here as he tries to reel in old wild bill up there in the number nine elliott has not had an all bad weekend here uh bill of course had the misfortune on pit road there just a little bit earlier but last night bill elliott rick mears the indycar star ran 150 lap enduro on a quarter-mile racetrack up the road here with 200 cars in it they put piers and elliott up on the front of the field started him while 200 cars fills the entire racetrack so elliott was laughing people in turn one beers dropped out early elliott finished second in a photo finish on the last lap won 500 got up after the race and said i have never had more fun in my life i'll give you back the 500 if you'll let me come out here and do this every week that was the law bill elliott billion-dollar bill running for 500 bucks now here's alan kawicki running hoping to get himself a chance at bigger things in 1988 rookie of the year last year still seeking that first win and building a team inch by inch brick by brick to be one of the real stalwarts of winston cup racing young man from milwaukee ken i'd like for you to just look at what we have up front jeff beaudine's great road racer ricky rudd's a great road racer dale earnhardt's aggressive rusty wallace is aggressive biddy parsons is smooth terry levine is one of the best bobby allison's one of the best harry gantz of goodreads we've got all the cream is rising at the top and all these people after halfway point we got good quality cars up front and everyone's running close together it just shows you what the road racing experience does and let's for you fans who follow some of these folks that aren't running up in front reviewed the entire field for you through 50 laps so you know if your contender is still in this race we'll shortly give you the attrition as well so you have a pretty good overview of how things are going here at riverside california today as we continue to watch jeff beaudine totally dominate this event eight cars are out of the race so far and seven are winston west cars and that's because they're not as used to the pressure as the winston cup people and their equipment just isn't as sanitary as what you see come out of the southeast caution is back on the track there is a yellow coming out around the track here harold kinder puts it out for the third time today third caution of the day we had a total of 12 laps thus far and beaudine immediately dives on pit road as does rudd earnhardt wallace parsons all of these leaders coming in labonte allison harry gant all taking this opportunity to fuel and take on tires if they stopped here they'd still have one more return to pit road before the race is over if it stayed green the record for this race was set by darrell waldrop at an average speed about 107 miles an hour that one went caution free not the case today now here's where a great pit stop can help you so much you can't believe it there's 12 or 13 cars running close if you can pop off one of those 12 second stops or a good four tire stop you for sure are going to gain four or five spots and rusty wallace has always been one of his secrets it's a great pit crew earnhardt the same way let's just check see who comes out front first one out i believe was bodine in the number five gary nelson's crew doing a dandy job so caution is on the track again the report is debris we'll update you on that in a moment out of the adversity of the bill elliot crew the word is that those three injured men are not as seriously injured as we first thought they might have been we'll be back with more in a moment well the greatest drivers and some of the fastest cars in the world are circulating rather leisurely fashion around riverside raceway here we are under caution and all the leaders have been on pit road we're here in the stp pit communications center and we've just gotten word of it's a swap in positions here as a result of the pit stops and specifically the pit work that the president johnny hayes pointed out a good pit stop for dale earnhardt enabled him to beat ricky rudd back out onto the racetrack so it's now beaudine earnhardt rudd wallace and benny parsons down here in fifth was it buddy that talked earlier i think it was johnny who talked earlier about road racing experience benny parsons got some good experience in that 55 car this week it's great to work for a multi-million dollar car owner because when rick hendrick decides to go run the race he just comes in and rents the racetrack for a couple of days of practice and when you're a teammate in the number 35 car of your car owner you get to go out there and run around too those who were here early in the week got a good look at that 35 car out there mixing it up with his boss but the important thing is that benny took it very seriously he had him out there drying off the racetrack cleaning off the mud he wanted to run a lot of laps because he wanted to run well here today and he's up to fifth spot so benny parsons is definitely a factor to win this thing let's get back to the booth now and the terrible trio why didn't you ever rent the track for your drivers john hayes i did hickory motor speedway it was 16 and uh and i furnished the hot dogs and stuff and it didn't help us a whole lot but we had a good time jeff beaudine continues out in front dale earnhardt is in second how much does it cost to test in the year buddy baker how much money do you set aside i would i would say most teams probably spend uh 15 to 18 thousand dollars for testing on the racetrack and one day in the wind tunnel getting ready for daytona how much does it win sixteen thousand dollars a day wow sixteen thousand dollars to see if it's gonna stop through the air and we'll go four or five times a year well sixteen thousand dollars for hot air blowing over your car i could be a wealthy man because i've been doing it on pit road for a long time indeed you have bodine first earnhardt second let's take a look at attrition right now if we could see who has dropped out of this race those are the folks out herschel mcgriff was the first down glenn stewart fell out roy smith came out giacomo jacchio tom kendall bill schmidt harry gallarde all had trouble here today and fell by the wayside time tough running for them and particularly for herschel who as we mentioned earlier turned 60 in december and is truly one of the legends of american racing all the way back to the old penn american series most of the people don't know that herschel's running with a cast on his left leg he was hit in an auto accident head on the other day and broke his left leg so uh it may be a blessing in the skies i would imagine that broken leg felt really good down the back straight away well overall there on crutches he was as fast as anyone in the pits he was absolutely steaming around working in that race car and as optimistic and as pleasant as ever herschel mcgriff from vital vale oregon here you see part of the immense crowd that's out here today of riverside california on the track that's never looked greener never looked better for what can be its last winston western 500. i'd also like to say happy birthday to one of the real celebrities in racing we just call him waterbed fred waterbed fred turned 60 this week november 5th waterbed fred happy birthday happy birthday to waterbed bread you're not supposed to talk about the producer during the telecom oh that was oh i'm sorry i thought that's right good luck to you waterbed try number 52 jimmy means back on the track on the superstation we have jeff bodine leading dale earnhardt and second we think we're getting agreeing in another lap after this caution period this is the third caution of the day and the rationale they told us to breathe we had any update on that let's review one lap to go and they come by this time are being told we're still going to get the official report on the condition that put us under this this caution period car number eight was the one they finally put it out for bobby hill and tried to back up and get his car off the track and was not able to do so boy we have some good cars up front i tell you this it's all worked out now everybody's worked their way to the front so this should be exciting shootout now all right they're coming around and they're going to be one lap away from getting a start let's review for you as they come down for the start bodine first earnhardt second ricky rudd third rusty wallace fourth bobby allison fifth parsons in sixth harry gant in seventh kyle petty is eight carrie levanti ninth bill elliott tenth phil parsons 11th daryl waltrip is back in 12th richard petty is in 13th morgan shepard is 14th rick wilson 15th and alan kowicki is in 16. dave marcus will be 17th in the restart joe ruttman will be in the 18th position and then a lap down is jim robinson in 19th and chad little is running in 20th here's jerry garrett we're down here in the back stretch ken where bobby hillen came to a stop they've got the car going the problem was that the throttle linkage broke they've now fixed it the reason for the yellow uh was caused by him stopping out here that got him going he's head back from the pits now and should be coming out probably after you on the racetrack pretty soon so we have 18 cars in the lead lap jerry and i think that as we get down for a start here we should see a tremendous battle up in front between bodine earnhardt and rudd let's see if wallace has got all of his stuff sorted out and now number eight is coming out as jerry garrett reported bobby hillen coming back on the track he's being held at the top of track he may have entered through the back entrance into the pits and that's a penalty of one lap if you do so ready for a green flag and back underway once again here they are coming down pace car pulls over they turn them loose out there on the back side so they can stretch them out a little before they come to a major corner they can't do that here on the start finish line area as they come down they're side by side there's earnhardt in the yellow and blue car and the yellow white and brown colors of number five bodine stays first there's ricky rudd in third back to turn number nine you're watching it live here and here comes earnhardt up on the inside whoa he hit him in the he comes after him again he comes right back on him again great racing what a great picture following around that turn nine all the way back to the line still even and bodine isn't giving who's going to give ground this will be good somebody well we got two pit bulls oh sick him he takes the lead earnhardt goes up in front bodine is in second and run is right there watching second game second get it get it dale earnhardt in first jeff podine in second ricky rudd is there rusty wallace into fourth and they really traded sheet metal now they return number nine what do you do buddy when that happens does your temper flare or do you just say well that's okay what temper i have no temper i've just run around straight back into him it's been all over for both of us notice the car number three is bent up number three has a little sheet metal damage on the nose of that car left side let's look at it from another angle this attempted pass here in turn nine earnhardt gets into bodine of course that's happened a few times before this year sets him a little sideways and bodine just picks it up you'd think he was back at the old shimon speedway up in new york state as he gathers the car back up and keeps on trucking earnhardt owned the grass to get under it look at this move i love it you're watching this live and this is beaudine right back on the inside and he goes back into first place underneath dale earnhardt i think earnhardt was willing to let him go here comes earnhardt back again what don't you love racism here they are back across the line and everybody here finish line on their feet this car number five bodine has retaken first place earnhardt the second ricky rod the third in some of the best moments this race has had it's cold chill time for me ken i noticed some damage to the left front fender on earnhardt's car it may be rubbing just a little bit but you never know it he's really on the attack you think his crew is talking to him about it no they don't talk to earnhardt he does all the driving and uh like richard says he just lets him do his job and they try to do theirs in the pits one of the best proofs white knuckle time up in front here between bodine earnhardt ricky rudd right there and wallace there you see rudd creeping into the picture about five car looks back from this pair that continues to lead it's about an eight-car length interval now down the back straight away as bodine just sails away from earnhardt there's wallace back and forth bobby allison in fifth bendy parsons still very much a part of it i think mr beaudine might have just uh showed us what he has he i i don't think that bump really helps a lot and he's probably gonna run off now he says i'm gonna leave earnhardt back here to hit somebody else well a lot of time these situations when you're touching like that nascar may walk down to you and say hey boys we're not gonna put up with that you know that's happened before this board cause dale was all over and then all of a sudden he dropped back three or four car lengths i'm not sure that he hasn't covered that much i got a feeling dale has pulled back a little bit and said i'll catch you later when it counts doesn't make any difference here's pat patterson well just exactly what you said johnny hazel was a situation where the nascar official came down and had a little confrontation with richard childress the car owner now what he said we're not sure but i don't think he was wondering uh you know exactly what was going on the racetrack so you're right they were having a little bit of a talk well they have a little bit of a talk on the racetrack right now earnhardt has pulled right back up on bodine he tried it but turned six which is a very difficult place to pass he stays right with him through turn eight here they are coming back out onto the racetrack and this is a dandy dale did not listen let me say one thing earnhardt is an extremely hard driver he doesn't do this on purpose he's just racing to try to win he got into him a little bit but he seems to be holding earnhardt up through the essence and uh you'll have occasional contact there's nothing deliberate against beaudine or anyone else he just wants to win when you get bad mad at another race driver how long does it take you to get over it well as soon as the incident's over and you go racing somebody else you forget it uh normally unless it you know if they spin you out then it'll last for a little bit the one thing i do question is the cool down laps that nascar gives if they if you're leading the race and they bring you in for a cool down lap you're not gonna cool down one of the stories we talked about at rockingham last week was this guy's crew number three dale earnhardt rumors that his engine builder and uh crew chief were going to leave the team and uh oh look at that sliding through the esses once again earnhardt is really gobbling up bow dive through that part of the racetrack beaudine seems to be stronger down the back but i'll tell you what earnhardt's climbing all over jeff beaudine that is dynamite with the views lit right there we talked about the two crew members and all the big money offers that they got and they said well everybody at our place wears a hearing aid money talks but we don't hear it i have a feeling that perhaps dale earnhardt had his hearing aid turned down for the nascar official said you better cool it out there although perhaps the reason that dale backed away from jeff beaudine after that first bump was that he was just feeling terribly guilty well here they are still tight together all wrapped up for first place car number five bodine number three earnhardt in a dandy here on the superstation there you see the interval and all of a sudden just seems to go away at turn nine the horsepower advantage would seem to be with that gary nelson crew at this time on that long straight away bodine draws away but in the corners look at him reel it off earnhardt feeling down that ninth turn back across the start finish line closing in again at turn number one we asked dale earnhardt what's the most difficult part of this race for you the whole thing there's a lot of difficult things about livingston the main thing is just being smooth and staying on the court uh the s is a little tough sometimes you know just a little slick offline and it's just a lot of tough things on the force that the event you know present problems and you know you just got to work hard all day long just move and be consistent be smooth and be consistent that's the key to winning here that certainly is the bow dying theme and it is the earnhardt theme but you put the two together and the whole song changes its tune dramatically as we're watching right now and these two get together it's apt to be a thrash buddy when they're slinging the car like that does that heat tires up like we do on speedways quite a bit i've noticed one thing um dale's car is not running down the back straight away uh mike beaudine's carving down through the asses he is just absolutely eating up and i think one of the reasons is earnhardt's car all year long on the short tracks has been the dominant force and uh as the tires get worn down he seems to really have an advantage on tight corners so the question remains can jeff beaudine in one of the rick hendricks stable racing cars hold on to this race he took the pole he's a former winner here in 1984 and he's seeking to win the last one well dale earnhardt has gone out in front but it has not been without incident here let's take a look at how he did it back in lap number 72. there you see bodine in the five he gets trapped on a slow car and as he gets treadmill earnhardt just drives around let's take another look in the dirt and what happened here another vantage point you see the slow car and bodine is caught and down to the inside goes earnhardt in the number three that's a little shortcut there and he goes out in front then bo dine decided he was going to straighten things out he went back around that horsepower along straight away here they are back at turn nine this is still on tape a few moments ago earnhardt just leans up a little nudge here along they come side by side they're headed back and now once again we're going live because they aren't back together again side by side they actually touch and slammed each other up into turn number one but they're doing it all the way around the racetrack look at this all over that racetrack inside outside where you're watching it live again and that is earnhardt up in front beaudine is in second ricky rudd is just watching to say if these two guys want to beat themselves up that's fine i'll wait for a while i tell you maybe earnhardt could use dr petty the neurosurgeon here because i think we're going to need a brain scan on both of these two guys i don't know it'd probably be a straight line but it'd be worth turning the machine on here they are back in that long straight away in first and second it is now earnhardt with the lead and perched on the rear bumper is bodine with ricky right back here look at bodine sweep around out of that draft that's the one place you really get hooked up in a draft go back in the lead now that's what happens here odin has the advantage here comes earnhardt back another time pulls up goes to the high side jeff moves up just a tad but he wants to stay though he doesn't want to get in that inside line if he can help it here they are back across the stripe another time and at the light here's earnhardt swinging up this is right what earnhardt did the last time and they came side by side into one and leaned on each other we can always pass him in the dirt because it is shorter that way i've never seen in my life somebody go through the dirt on purpose have you that's a that's a good example of what earnhardt will do to get in the lead in the race well i've seen joe ruttman do it look at this and work each other over and collect it and keep on going and pick up a couple of spots buddy does bodine watch his mirror or does he have to keep his eyes to the front could he watch earnhardt try to block him or does he have to just watch where he's going no he has to drive his own race now he has to get on earth back here till he sees him upside of him i think he could probably feel earnhardt pine because he's been touching about every lap and he is touching him isn't he yeah they're getting together almost all the time through the s and the way they sling those cars i mean you talking about racing this takes my breath and i make my living going to races and i mean this takes my breath you know john you're talking about you never saw anybody do that but in the old days curtis turner on this very same track in this race past parnelli jones cut a straight line through all those s's and made a whale in the line just right out through the dirt bounced back on the track and came through that was 67. ken johnny said that that was a little before his time yeah curtis turner yeah he's one of my heroes buddy baker curtis turner and fireball and all those old people i love them jeff bodine in front dale earnhardt second now bill elliot has dropped out he has gone back behind the wall that's so unfortunate for car number nine it's been a miserable day for a former winner here in 1983 and jerry garrett has the story but ken's the reason why bill went careening off the track there earlier as he hit some huge piece of debris that just physically knocked him off the track to squash the header pipes flat they're down here with a torch now trying to cut the header pipes out so he can get some back pressure out of this exhaust system the car will still run hopefully get back out there got a lot of points at stake indeed he does he's in a tremendous battle in the points currently coming in his race was in second place with 147 points in front of terry labonte as work continues back in the garage area on bill elliot's car here you see the earnhardt car trailing jeff budine in the lead and there you see ricky rudd in third and right behind him is rusty wallace and they don't gain or lose any time i think they're sitting on something both 15 and 27 waiting for further out of this race to show their hand how's that for a shot of the tire marks from earnhardt on the side of bodine's car hats off to the camera but for that my question again to you guys in the booth it's pretty obvious here i think that jeff bodine's got a whole lot more steam in his car than does dale earnhardt down that back stretch bodine's just gobbling him up he could pass him back there or he could pull away from it back there earnhardt's got to be using up that race car to be keeping this kind of a battle going with beau diamond will i think take that kind of abuse the rest of the afternoon buddy baker well i think it'll you know they're they're tough cars both of them they wouldn't be in the point standings as well as they are if they were not tremendous race cars but uh earnhardt's car is the tank he'd have a wreck that totaled most cars and keep going so uh he's definitely tough johnny hayes i think what earnhardt's doing now is relaxing a little bit sitting back a little bit bill elliott's back into the race but i think earnhardt is going to sit there and relax let the tires cool down and hope that beaudine relaxes then here he's going to come back again and ambush him from the side and go back to the front i think uh i dreamed last night ricky rudd won the race rusty wallace finney second i believe that's about where it's gonna end who finished third you ain't gonna believe this but phil parsons and i did say phil finished third well he's in he's intense right now and he's running the lead left that's interesting the second place man earnhardt third play if you believe in dreams and all that sort of thing rusty wallace fourth bobby allison fifth benny parsons in six in seventh terry the body harry ganders in eight kyle petty tonight bill parsons tenth morgan shepard to 11th darrell waltrip in 12th allen kowicki in 13 joe rotman 14 going 15th is dave marcus 16th rick wilson 17th is richard petty all in that lead lap more from riverside live shortly we're in the stp pitt communications center riverside international raceway 27th winston western 500 jeff bodine and dale earnhardt having a slug fest 40 laps to go i don't know if either one of them will get to the finish line normal pit stops are coming up here let's see if we can find out more from pit road and jerry garrett well i wanted to tell you dave that bill elliot's back out there now they cut off this section of header pipe off the exhaust you can see the scratch marks on there and hit something pretty substantial something metallic squashed something that is normally about four inches around right flat we asked bill where the debris came from he said he thought it might have come off the leaders or been kicked up by the leaders that banging around may have some kind of detrimental effect on those two cars up front they're watching that 79 laps have now been completed 79 down as bodine continues to barrel around this 2.6 mile nine turn road course getting around buddy harrington right now buddy arrington going to lap down as bodine continues to muscle his way through and it looks like earnhardt has uh worn out a set of tires as he chased chased hard bodine here sliding slipping around the racetrack taking a few excursions into the dirt to try to pick up the lead he has settled back into second place ricky rudd is in third and wallace is in fourth and perhaps here we can get a look at that interval between this man number five bodine and the number three there of daryl earnhardt for the moment rick hendrick behind the wall is rick hendrick our in-car camera crew having a heck of a time here the march air force base is next door and they have more unique electronic secret gear to foul the best-laid plans of mice men and in-car cameras we've ever come across here's beaudine still pulling away from earnhardt now and it looks like earnhardt's tires have definitely left him he's falling back four or five seconds and almost into the clutches of car number 15 ricky rod in third and wallace running in fourth now there's number 35 that is benny parsons who is currently shown in fifth and behind him should be bobby allison right there in the sixth spot and there you see in seventh terry labonte there's parsons running in fifth right behind him bobby allison then terry labonte in the 11 car fifth sixth and seventh gathering up for assault on that fifth position parsons maintaining it with 17 cars still in the lead lap two thirds of the race gone away 80 laps now complete we're watching that battle right there we see terry labonte back there running an eighth spot that's kind of interesting from the standpoint that the unical press panel of experts the reporters who cover stock car racing the guys who really know the book on these people pick terry labonte by an overwhelming margin to win this race he got 18 votes the next closest guy was daryl waltrip with five so what do we press people know labonte's running eighth and waltrip's nowhere to be seen let's go down to jerry garrett on pit road we're down here with uh following sure sterling marlon's problems again and it's a shifter once again he hasn't got any gears that he can get right now he had second and third there for a while then he got fourth and now he's down to two gears and second gear only let's go on a pit road now c as sterling marlin leaves what pat patterson got to say i think something is wrong rick hendrick is with me rick sorry to see you out of it what happened on the car uh we were just trying to ride along and wait for the last 25 laps and uh something came off of a car up there in the esses and i ran over it and i heard a big bang and then there was a lot of oil up under coming up through the car clutch started slipping a little bit but it busted the bell housing and pull it up pretty good underneath you were a little nervous about this thing today but you got out there and you mixed it up pretty good with those guys it looked like you were having a good run yeah well you know we we were where we ought to be uh you know i didn't want to get a lap down but that happened and harry we weren't i wasn't sure how uh how much i could go on the brakes and i felt great i could i think i could drive another race now but uh you know we were just waiting for the last 30 laps and then try to go hard and uh just didn't get there you can get out and pull you pull for your other drivers now that's rick henry i hope they win i'm rooting for them thank you rick kendrick uh who gave us those great shots from the superflow motor oils in-car camera today and now he's on the sidelines and we're watching earnhardt who as you saw there has fallen back two positions uh he has fallen back ricky rudd and rusty wallace have moved by dale earnhardt and he is now looking up from fourth i would say his tires are off maybe something more here but ken the word down here on pit road is is that same piece of debris that bill elliott hit may have been the same piece of debris that rick hendrick hit pretty costly piece of debris out there and i'm talking about costly pieces they say there may be a cylinder gone on car number three he didn't run over anything he's running with a problem say he's down to seven cylinders in car number three but right now he stays right with wallace and right with car number 15 i wonder if that could be true or he'd be falling further back well i think something definitely has happened because he's fallen way off the pace but the real charge right now is rusty wallace he is flying out there he went by ricky rudd and not many people have passed ricky rudd under the green today and wallace who won at watkins lim would certainly be in a good shot here as we get down toward the end of this one to pull it off he's running in second if he can just get one more good pit stop he certainly has the crew that can do it well rusty wallace again those brakes are working beautifully and he can just drive it deeper and deeper in and they have found some kind of secret combination on brakes and they've worked so hard on them it's giving them that advantage they need on a road course and it's showing today keep in mind ken that bill elliott said earlier that he thought maybe some pieces fell off of either earnhardt or bodine's car so maybe the reason that earnhardt is slowing down has something to do with a piece that fell off of his car right behind this car number 27 the wallace car is rudd and then earnhardt smoking and all of a sudden something is really a foul of car number three earnhardt is slipping back here you see parsons going by him and the motor may be going away on car number three earnhardt so after all here's bobby allison pulling up on him bobby had been running in six he'll take fifth here something is amiss on uh car number three as it slides back through the field whoops how do you do thank you very much that's allison's car now let's go to pat patterson with the richard childress team richard childers here on pit road richard what's wrong with the car we lost a cylinder so we don't know you know we'll probably drop the valve or something you guys are having a good run up then can you fix it and get back out i don't know we'll just have to see when he comes in here you know it's uh it's doubtful you probably lost your silver you know uh broken fish rogers tough break for dale earnhardt he's losing fluid out of the car down the back straightaway there if you notice the two left side tires are really uh coated with some kind of fluids he's losing more than just a cylinder i believe so dale earnhardt who has tried all these years to win this race dating back to 1979 and 80 yet a second place and of course last year was runner-up not going to go his way again today coming down the back side of the racetrack headed for turn nine and most of those leaders all the way back to ninth place kyle petty have now gone by him and for sure i believe he's already been given a black consultation flag to pull on pit road because he is leaking something nascar wants him in comes by and he is getting the flag right now as he goes across the line there he just was given the consultation flight to get it off the track they want to take a look at that car as it may be putting some fluid down some lubricant onto this asphalt sobodine stays first wallace is now in the catford seat running the runner-up spot and ready to challenge for the lead one of the hard chargers is out of this western 500 or at least is in trouble and that is dale earnhardt apparent motor problems on the guy who still ranks fourth in today's true value hardware hard charger standings earnhardt has accumulated enough points running up for upfront to the fourth today but overall for the 25 000 seasons award he just absolutely knocked everybody out and here's how he did it remember the award is for the guys who run up front you got to lead left earnhardt has led 36 of the laps run this year he has led more laps than the next four guys in those true value standings combined there are the numbers if you add up bill elliott navy allison terry labonte and ricky rudd together the four of them have not led as many laps as the real true value hard charger of 1987 dale earnhardt earnhardt the story until now but now it becomes the story of bodine and wallace here tremendous battle wage between dale and car number five jeff beaudine finally it seemed to be almost too much cylinder gave in on the car he's back out here another time after being brought in under a consultation flag trying to get a report as to what they did to his car in earnhardt car out there before they got him back on the track some 86 laps are now complete 32 laps to go in the event here this afternoon live on the super station kodine continues to just maul the competition here try to pull away and he has a pretty good lead as we look at interval between first and second place it's a handsome advantage that beaudine is building up he has better than 10 seconds on the second place man rusty wallace and then it's three or four seconds back to ricky rutt who is in third ricky rudd is followed by about one second benny parsons in fourth a pretty good battle 11 and 22. they're at it pretty strong now terry labonte and bobby allison with harry again and there they are there is terry lavonny right in front of bobby allison in the car number 11 he will pull up into the fifth position allison in six and in that snarl of cars directly behind the 22 should be the harry gantt car harry's having a good day after having a miserable season well harry's had a tough year they were excited here he's always run well here he's usually had some kind of transmission or rear end problem because he really punishes the car but it's held together so far and i tell you kyle petty's having a real good run that's a great race there all those cars are just locked in together and anything can happen here and you can certainly pick up a bunch of spots because we don't know what's going to happen up front those four cars are all battling at the present time for the fifth position terry labonte has moved into fifth bobby allison has fallen 2-6 harry gant is in seventh kyle petty is an eighth and that's where we are right now with you in the event terry lavonny trying to motor away from that group as they go into turn nine it's riverside california's winston western 500 for 398 000 we've had three cautions one a serious incident on kit road on only the eighth lap and three members of bill elliot's pit crew were injured two were hospitalized chuck hill with a broken arm stevens with a broken leg we just saw a lot of smoke from the 11 car i guess it was tire smoke got a little sideways the pressure's really on these fellas because they are racing for position and they're racing hard just like the race is almost over and it's not but they're really getting after each other but you do see puffs of smoke from the 11 cars the junior johnson car juniors won this race on two occasions as far as owners the all-time number one seven-time winners the wood brothers in this 500 they won with gurney in the early days of course the last time i believe the last time he tasted victory was the pearson he wanted back to back a couple of times wood brothers have kyle petty now and he is in eighth place again these cars are all in the lead lap terry lavonny pulling away just a bit and there was any smoke it doesn't seem to be hampering his endeavor at this point there's the number 22 car bobby allison in six harry gant in seven pile petty and eight those four cars pretty tight together and there is some smoke coming out of the back a number there was that was rear end smoke that time definitely rear end smoke and like we said earlier it's transmissions and rear ends you get hard on them so he does have a problem second place man rusty wallace about 10 seconds back from the leader rusty can you feel comfortable in your car this racetrack i can probably be more comfortable in this racetrack in this particular car than i can of most this is the car that i won watkins glen race with one up in new york and it handles very well and the road course is one thing i've been waiting for all year long we've got one win under our belt we really need another one and this is our golden app opportunity to get it right out here at riverside there he is and he's pulling right in behind the number nine of bill elliot you know elliot has had his trouble he was in the pits for several laps they made some repairs beneath the car working on the header pipe to relieve some pressure there got him back out i'm sure the folks back in north georgia watching the dahlonega dawsonville area very concerned about those crew members that were run over down on pit road they say it is non-life-threatening non-life endangering that's the good news but it was a serious situation and a lot of folks back there very concerned throughout georgia the pride of georgia is truly this elliot racing team in this great ford thunderbird that has carried the last two races first place the injured crew folks are at the riverside community hospital and they're saying right now they're all in stable condition so better news buddy baker better news johnny hayes hard stock to this race though for a great reason really was those boys are all good friends of mine personally and we're staying at the same hotel and as soon as this race is over i'm going straight to that hospital here's car number 11 showing a lot of smoke terry labonte just pouring out of the back remember he has picked up the spot he is running in fifth and it looks like uh that rear end may be getting a bit warm on that car what do you think buddy well i'm not sure what the smoke is it may be a valve cover gasket may be a fitting to an oil pump anything but he's running quite well bobby allison uh has just brought his car on the pit road and here is the engine going away on car number 15 ricky rudd ah that's unfortunate ricky rudd's car which had such a great day going for the driver who qualified second and won this race in 1985 and as he comes up around turn six by those big grandstands there it's all over for him looks like he may have put something down everybody sashay in the pits for a long time 24 seconds with bobby allison and there's the 15 drawing off the track and coming to a home yellow flag is out caution flag is out there is fluid on the racetrack unbuckling and ready to step out of car number 15 ricky rudd with that caution out this will give wallace the chance he wants to get back up in here and parsons so if they have anything to show now is the time to show it jeff beaudine leading with rusty wallace in second ricky rudd is now just another one of those dnf's and did not finishes in the winston western 500 under caution fourth time of the afternoon here at riverside california after ricky rudd's car blew an engine here we are in the xerx car of alan kawiki who stays up in the lead lap he's been shown running as high as eighth recently now he's being shown in 12 [Music] back on the track and there is ricky rudd out of his car it's a tough moment for ricky rudd up in the turn six area of the of this riverside international raceway a story we've covered every year we've come to riverside is the demise of this track this year it's dave to spain's turn to report on the death of a racetrack how many years has it been now since riverside raceway was pronounced dead it's life after death that brings us here today results from delays and a giant development that surrounds the racetrack and will move inside the gates next wednesday dan greenwood is the track president it's going to be the beginning the real beginning when you see those big machines out there on the hill start moving dirt so we know it's coming two years ago we thought last year was it and there were enough delays that we could work around it but we're going into our third and final last year at riverside it's just not quite sure yet when it's final this track will be overrun by the town of moreno valley you've probably never heard of it but experts say in 10 years it will be one of the hundred largest cities in america explosive southern california growth that has already swallowed ontario motor speedway is about to bury an important piece of racing history the one thing i've learned to love this place this old tired wonderful racing facility this racetrack probably more than any other one in all the world has had all the classic drivers of all the disciplines i don't think you can name another racetrack in the world that has had the variety of drivers and driving styles and and sanctioning bodies here next june at this crowded old racetrack the international race of champions drivers from many disciplines will come for a final race at the track where iroc was born and the day after these same winston cup cars race here allegedly for the last time but dan let's talk odds would you give us a betting line that there might be next november yet another last race at riverside yeah i can give you a great one you can really a 50 50. dan greenwood who's done a lot with his track following the footsteps of les richter who for many years was the man who maintained a motor racing presence winston cup racing on the west coast the ontario racetrack coming and going as it did great sadness to see that go and be sorry to see this one going just hope there's a facility on the west coast for great motorsports competition and it's for certain that back here they had a formula one at a world championship racing track at one time can am raised here trans am raised here indy cars raced here winston cup raced here harry gant had pitted earlier and just came back in the pit so he probably had an equalized tire or a tire going down so he did have to come back getting set for a start let's pause for this message and then we'll be back with more live coverage of the winston western 500 from riverside california [Music] we're under caution continuing for our fourth caution 36 of 42 cars still running bob richards is standing by and has another gm good wrench update for us this afternoon bob thanks ken you know the most prestigious off-road race in the world the baja 1000 was held yesterday the overall victory went to legendary motorcycle racer malcolm smith he teamed up with bob gordon in a two-seat buggy they're winning time just over 13 hours well just up the road at ascot park in gardener last night brad noffsinger won the cra event nafsinger who just failed to qualify for the winston 500 here virtually wrapped up that series championship with the win the series comes to an end next weekend well dale earnhardt is going to be sporting a new look next year gm goodwrench will sponsor the three-time nascar champ he'll be going after title number fourth in this beautiful a black chevrolet well speaking of new ride sources tell us that porsche has ordered a second march chassis for their indy car insiders tell us that porsche now has an excellent indy car for about three years ago well that's it for this gm good wrench update let's go back upstairs to ken all right they're under caution i think we got another lap before this one gets underway you just saw number three in the background there dale earnhardt's car headed back into the garage area and it may be out and if it is it's only the second time this year that earnhardt has failed to finish in 1977 kel yarborough finished all 30 races but the all-time record herman beam you remember herman buddy he finished all 52 races in 1962 back when you were in your prime yeah herman was quite a finisher he didn't run up front but he was always in there hard worker he did all the work himself on the car [Music] just one historical footnote on that to earnhardt retirement he had a shot at tying richard petty's record for single season career wins earnhardt's 111 winston cup races plus the winsman itself he needed to win here and atlanta to tie that record so as he goes to the garage herman beats record stands so does that of richard teddy who is still the only man ever to win 13 races in a single season in the modern era of the 30 race season herman later became a crew chief of kaylee yarbrough years went by under caution with bodine first wallace second bobby allison maintaining third benny parsons fourth terry labonte fifth kyle petty six and it's a phil parsons in seventh and i believe we're one lap away from turning this field loose again daryl waltrip is eight kawiki ninth joe rutland up to 10. richard teddy is 11. harry gant is 12th dave marcus 13th rick wilson 14th and those cars are all in the lead lap the first car lap down is chad little who is running in 15th position chad little the winston west champion will turn them loose on the back side this time around getting set for a restart and you're with the let's go to jerry garrett quickly okay we're down here with dale earnhardt and this is a rare occasion for you out of the race what happened well we broke a valve spring when i was racing with uh uh bodine and it started getting worse then it dropped the valve so you know we just sort of was crippled and they put water in it and it put water in the oil and started oil pressure going way crazy and you know we didn't want to run like that and you know it's just one of them deals at this point you don't have to run like that i guess you got the title under your belt already yeah that's good you know uh we're glad to have that on our belt we should have missed neil bonnett out here racing with us though and hopefully he won't get no deal before i get in alabama too after atlanta we were remarking when you and jeff were going out there really close for a couple of laps so that was great racing that you guys were just showing given a clinic and how to race good tight hard racing well we was getting putting a good show on i thought uh you know bodine's off a strong down that back stretch and i couldn't run with him but uh you know the card run with him up through the hisses and was awful competitive there but you know maybe we'll catch up next race out here but we had a good time while i was there okay thanks dale so we're ready on a restart bow dying first wallace second as they get ready for a go there you see benny parsons pulling into the picture in the third spot now bobby allison dropping back to fourth as they line up on this start green flag is out and as they break let's see if rusty wallace and that green and white pontiac has the legs to catch and contain jeff bodine the leader or will bodine just walk away here they all are gathered up coming down beneath the bridge into turn number nine hard on the brakes 3 500 pounds of car going whoa for a moment from top speed as they come around this time with this blinding sun on this beautiful day in southern california bodine has the advantage by two or three car lengths and wallace is there saw rudd who looked like he had a real shot at pulling this off his hopes go up in smoke when the engine came apart [Music] you know that bodine has his fingers crossed he has a good engine builder and for sure any one of those top five cars right now top eight cars have great engine builders men who can make cars live and sustain the terrible pace and the riggers they're put through on this tough nine turn course here they are back to six shifting down slowest corners on the track there's part of this immense crowd gathered here the inland empire part of california as it's called here's wallace closing another time moves right up on the rear bumper coming into that fast straight away let's see if he'll be able to pull through it's live here on the super station and we're pleased to report we'll be back with three years of great racing coming up in the future starting with the 24 hours of daytona january 30th and 31st 1988. rusty wallace is the challenger to jeff bodine [Music] my question ken is whether rusty wallace is in fact in a position to whip jeff beaudine i think that's the question mark carr in the race right there wallace has been strong all day he's been within 10-12 seconds of the leader all day but on no occasion this afternoon has he been able to get up there and run with jeff beaudine this is it we're down to it we've had that last yellow flag they've all got the fuel and tires the cars are as good as they're going to get wallace needs to get after jeff bodine right now we saw him as they made that last run down the back straps get a little squirrely coming out of turn eight that cost him the momentum down the back stretch we know how strong beaudine is in that area of the race car but the key point here is whether rusty wallace who's talked so much about his high hopes here today can do the job and the sleeper in the race definitely bobby allison who's won more races here than any other driver always tough number 22 is going to be ready to go after him add to your sleeper liz parsons as far as i'm concerned bobby allison back there and forth benny's having a great day today in carnival 35 but i think the question made it in some degree be answered and here's car number 21 kyle petty figuring into things as he gets around car number 22 kyle petty has just pulled around bobby allison kyle's having an excellent run here this afternoon in carnival 21 you see him pulling up here he's just moved around into the fourth position benny parsons is third rusty wallace is in second and the answer to your question may be already given after this restart johnny hayes buddy baker your comment but bodine has just pulled over the field again he's leaped out in front and he leads by about 300 feet after just a couple of laps bowdoin's currency extremely strong through nine and long straight away on the back but uh kyle pettis is really showing a lot of muscle now and the wood brothers have had more success here than anybody i know of so we're inching toward a start with 98 laps complete 119 the distance will it be jeff budding's day or will he end up like ricky rudd in a cloud of smoke more in a moment at riverside international raceway top side start finish line with johnny hayes and buddy baker i'm ken squire covering the pits pat patterson jerry garrett at the stp fit center today dave to spain and we're getting an update i was just talking to chip williams from nascar and there is a late report on charlie hill one of the three members of the bill elliot crew injured in an incident on pit road in the first caution of the day at lap seven or eight the latest report is that thirty five-year-old steve caldwell from georgia the jackman is in critical condition now this is an update we have just been given the first report from the hospital was indicating no one was in critical condition and that is the latest word that has just been passed on by nascar the other two people that were injured they had said that was not life endangering nor life-threatening that was butch stevens 36 year old from charlotte north carolina tire carrier and charlie hill 23 years old from dawsonville georgia a tire changer in the rear dan elliott was also injured but he was on his feet they just took him in for a checkup and dan is okay that is the latest report we have if we have anything further to report we'll pass it on to you richard petty as you see in your picture now watching live here at riverside is in seventh position in car number 43. he is having an excellent day but there's a guy that's trying to mess up his parade a little and that is daryl waltrip right there in car number 17. daryl has closed dramatically in the last two laps to pull to within maybe 10 12 car lengths definitely isn't working him over phil parsons who was running in seventh place number 55 slowed and went off the pace and he's now coming down pit road i don't know if he has a tire going down if he has a problem he's coming down pit road right now so phil parsons car number 55 which had been shown as high as in the 13th position is on pit road he had a tire going down they looked to the right side first and uh we're going to check i'm sure going down he is the lead car oh we got another fellow doing a little agricultural racing here this afternoon that's that car number 14 from the west coast being driven this afternoon by harry gallarde from morgan hill he certainly had an opportunity to investigate this entire race facility and i'm noticing that uh the 27 car benny and uh kyle petty are closing in on bodine i don't know whether he may have a tire uh getting a little slick or what but they're definitely closing in well let's check it right now i have the opportunity here's here's podine in the five car and the question is how much is wallace and parsons gathering up by it looks like a ton it looks like he's coming very very quickly wallace is moving back in here up on that leader number five bowdine and he is closer we're in for a heck of a finish here today at riverside california with parsons in third and kyle petty is up to four there's kyle right there and fourth this will be his best finish at riverside yes he holds it he's run strong all day he's been there this has not been an accident he qualified well he's run well and he said the car felt good to him front four within a second and a half quick word from pat patterson barry dodson's a crew chief on rusty wallace's car barry is it you running out of time part is he got enough to catch him i don't know pat we're trying our best to leave our garrett's car strong the kodiak pontiac strong and we're getting a little better you know both of us are okay on fuel we're just gonna give it our best shot okay that's rusty wallace's crew chief mary dodson you see a lot of people starting to smoke tires so everyone's driving it hard checking that interval from first to second and it's getting tighter all the time as rusty wallace tries to contain jeff bodine parsons sitting there kyle petty has made some great moves toward the end of this race and finds himself now up into the fourth spot road racing has not been one of his best he's won two races now of course he wanted richmond here on turner broadcasting a couple of years ago in that chakra there he is sideways around six then came back to win that endurance contest in the coca-cola 600 at charlotte north carolina this year on memorial day one of america's truly great races here is kyle petty closing in on parsons and that's a good battle unto itself that battle is for third benny holding on to that third spot kyle trying to take it away just a bit further back is bobby allison fifth terry lemonade six richard petty seventh wall trip eighth back to turn nine comes your leader jeff beaudine stows steady so smooth out there he had himself a real world and there you see the difference between first and second as rusty wallace continues to close ground and try to move in to take his second road race of the year his first being watkins glenn new york it's a minute on the second and four between first and second place here at riverside bowtie leading overwatch someone has just lit the fuse on richard petty he has moved around terry lavonny he is challenging bobby allison's number 22 car for the fifth position richard having an excellent day as the laps continue to dwindle down 105 of 119 complete up in front it's still bodine the leader in the interval stays pretty much the same here's where the fight is it's between allison a couple of real veterans out here with 83 wins richard petty the all-time winner at 200 petty going down to turn nine just on the last lap he moved under la body here he dives beneath the white line and tries to pull up on bobby allison richard petty coming on bottom of the racetrack inches alongside the old richard here out of turn number nine moving in on allison in the 22. shades of 1971 petty and allison side by side it's a good one [Applause] oh that's wonderful richard petty up another spot allison stays right with him oh little sideways there little full contact stock car racing they let those young high school boys do that early they show these older professionals can get at it just as good they sure can richard petty going up through gets bobby allison takes down terry lavonny and richard petty is now running right behind his son kyle and of course they have their own war going in the point-standing battle richard's in seventh kyle is an eighth and he said to me before the race i got one thing to do i've got some serious work to do out here on my father the difference of about fifteen thousand dollars in the final point standings and he intends to pick his father's pocket before it's over well i think his dad wants me when kyle makes a big time singer his dad has asked me if he thought it'd be smart to drive his bus to all the country concerts so richard does have a job after retirement here's dave to speak i'll tell you what that's as good as stuff as we've seen today that was as good as bodine and earnhardt any day of the week and when you watch richard petty and bobby allison it brings back so many memories and you got to keep in mind that these guys are first and second in the uh record standings for consecutive starts between them they have not missed a race in 830 winston tough starts and they're out there beating on each other just like as you said then it was 1971 that was good stuff good stuff right here as terry labonte moves in on bobby allison pat patterson standing by on pit road can you give us any updates pat well the big update here ken squire is the levi garrett crew that's gary nelson and company are standing by for a pit stop with bo diner leader we're waiting in his pit the crew's got tires up on the wall crew chief gary nelson is standing by with the sign to slow boat on down and bring him to his pit so something is a miss here we'll try to get the story for you when he does pit [Applause] some people said they could go all the way this could if you could go all the way you sure want to pick up a bunch of spots and this would put him out of the running if in fact these other cars can go all the way because they probably take gas only watching here as you see the allison carr in six labonte and seventh wall trip in eighth just back of car number 11 darrell waltrip and there goes terry lamoni taking a shot at bobby allison pulls alongside and will he make it here they are in a turn number nine it's tough to beat allison and turn 9 on this racetrack he drives this corner as well as anyone meanwhile here is car number five your leader bodine and the interval is about one and one tenth of a second between first and seconds in the mud seriously in the mud he's back on the track as he pulls out i think that was the number 27 car that went by him wallace is pulled by i thought it looked like he had a tire going down i think that i think that's what's happened i think he has a tire going down and they were on the wall waiting for that and hoping he did not yeah getting knocked around out there as he tries to go underneath and gets through on car number five bodine look at that style of cars trying to move around bow down what a frustrating moment bobby allison gets back around they now and off the track goes labonte as waltrip gets through and turns six now in all of that shuffle there's alan kowicki and give a call to kawiki as he has had a great day that little independent team comes starling up into eighth position and kawiki from the xerox car is ready to challenge terry lavonny for seven spots again march air force base going in competition with alan kawiki's camera there back straight away here's alan kawicki closing in on terry labonte that ford is one of the smaller teams at xerox teams now watch again let's see if we can get another look at what happened right here to car number five jeff odin that sure was a tire beginning to say good night it just pushed right over there he could not turn it his wheels are turned the other way it would not go looked like a swamp buggy there for a moment back on the course comes jeff bodine thought he was in naples now watch this as he slow down richard petty and no place to go nails him in the door richard takes evasive action comes around gets himself righted and then there was about two or three other small altercations at that point back with you live in the pits bodine coming into the pits here well all that mud water is still on that racetrack everybody has to remember that when they go through there it could be a problem here's pat patterson well jeff jeff bodine's car looks like it's been through the war here gentlemen got off the course the whole right side of the car heavily damaged there as you can see the sheet metal bent in around the front but that'll get two tires here but it's not going to be enough to make up the pound he's lost ten laps to go we'll be back for the finish here at riverside california in this exciting unbelievable winston western 500 where now rusty wallace in car number 27 is going for his second win of the season [Music] in the stp pit communication center riverside international raceway rusty wallace inherits the lead from jeff beaudine benny parsons is coming at him kyle petty and richard petty are still right there who's going to win this race let's go topside to ken squire and find out rusty wallace would like to believe it's going to be him the man who says i've got a lot left to do in racing three wins one at watkins glen earlier this year set on the pole earlier this season that's the great raymond beadle blue max team that came into the sport back in 1982. now look at this confrontation there's benny parsons that's buddy baker's pick right now huh buddy i'll tell you he's running awful straight off the corners he's not using enough his tires and he's closing ground on wallace i i just have to say he has to be one that could uh win the race here's jerry garrett well we just talked to uh harry hyde the crew chief on benny parker's car to ask him what the fuel situation is and he doesn't have a whole lot of extra fuel but he's not going to have to stop before the end of the race will not jerry can someone get a report on kyle petty's effort out here today and on raymond beatles number 27 the very dachshund crew see where they stand as far as having to come in or not come in one more time well rusty wallace went dead sideways off the nine kicks smoke up dirt up and he is using those tires up and you can see benny is closing and then he smooth his glass dave to spain well let's go back and do a little arithmetic here at the top of the show johnny hayes talked about the experimentation they do to try to figure out how long these cars will run on a tank of fuel and 30 is roughly the number by our tally the green flag came out with 28 laps to go so for the guys who pin it early on that yeah last yellow flight it's going to be real close here if wallace could go the distance he's in the driver's seat harry height says that green 35 of old benny parsons is ready to go kyle petty is certainly right there to challenge them indeed he is here we are down out of that turn eight area with now 112 of 119 complete they're working the 113th lap at this time pat patterson got a fuel report for us well as you see ken squire these are two fuel cans of rusty wallace right now and they sent idle in the pitch they're full but the crew's not got him in their hands so he's got enough fuel to make it this is only rusty wallace's fourth race on this track his best finish last year when he came home eight the other two years way back out of the top 20. out in front there he is pitching that car sideways and there's not much left on the rubber side of that tire tires and tubes are doing fine but the air is showing through as hank williams used to say well i think rusty wallace is a very aggressive driver he's like a dale earnhardt he attacks his course and he rolls the dice and he's allowed to be in the dirt anywhere where benny's running good smooth lines but here comes kyle right after him we just contacted the wood brothers to find out the fuel situation on kyle petty's car and they congratulated dave to spain and his arithmetic said that that's right they got about a two lap cushion so nobody needs fuel down here as far as we can tell interesting to know if kyle petty has more just can't get around parsons to make a run here he looks like he's got plenty of muscle he pulls up but he just can't quite contain parsons so he stays in third his father is considerably further back and forth then in the fifth spot is allison six labonte seventh wall trip eighth kawiki ninth rutman 10th dave marcus 11th bodine all running in that lead lap jim robinson from the winston west series is the first west coast driver he's back there in 12. there's parsons fighting turn nine with one of the hendrick racing stable cars and sideways everywhere around this place as rusty wallace trying to hold on to this lead down across the start finish line and into turn one another time goes rusty wallace builds up a little bit of an advantage here i've noticed uh something about benny's car now he was getting through nine great a while ago but he started pushing pretty bad in the center of the corner and uh rusty's a little bit loose but he's coming off faster well there's five laps to go so this is the time to show it's not uh time to take it easy so i know vinnie's going 100 and i think tires are critical you chase you heat them up and but i tell you the brakes have worked beautifully for rusty wallace so all you people want to be road racers go to work on your brakes rusty wallace what gives you the biggest problems the biggest fits here at riverside the biggest fist at riverside is definitely turn nine it's the biggest turn on the racetrack and it's where you've got to handle the best but trying to pass up through the s's at all is awful rough and then the transmissions you really got to take care of but now we've got some new style transmissions that are much much stronger and easier to work with but all around riverside it's a flat racetrack and this place is getting old and starting to lose some adhesion to the ground and that's a lot of slip and sliding goes on and that's exactly what's happening here look at him saw away at that wheel as rusty wallace takes turn nine just as fast as he absolutely dares pushes it right out to the wall and of course on this racetrack the driver is against the wall they run clockwise here with four laps to go wallace in front trying to draw a bead on another road racing victory leads by 1 and 4 10 seconds over benny parsons and kyle petty could be in for his best finish ever on this racetrack in this event he's never finished better than 13th here and currently stays third with his dad back and forth bobby allison fifth there's kyle and here are those two challengers closing again on rusty wallace how about it who's strong who's weak here looks to me like kyle may be the strongest if he could just get a shot on the 35 well i think kyle uh runs him down through the edges but seems like benny has enough motor to pull him see they're right together when you check him down the back stretch it seems like vinnie can pull him a little bit and you have a pontiac out in front here pontiac leading chevrolet in second ford in third be a big day for the pontiac folks if they pull this one off laps running down or inside the final four now at riverside in the last winston western 500 there's your leader rusty wallace who has the advantage with benny parsons in second kyle petty in third the laps trickling away the pressure really is on wallace but he's used to that came out of the asa ranks his champion there champion of the united states auto club and stock cars and he's raced for a long time the man that originally roger penske said was the guy to watch was rusty ross well you can really see him saw that steering wheel he really saw that he sits up straight there you see from inside of alan kawicki's car and here's cole wiki kipp from madison wisconsin running in eighth position with that xerx car doing just a grand job staying in the lead lap all day you can't do what kawiki has done with the money he has in the in the number of crew members he doesn't have two or three guys he runs the same old car this is the car he's running here the car that he totally destroyed early in the season alan kawicki gets one of the hero of the year awards because he's done more with what he has than anybody i've ever seen there's wallace trying to do everything possible what he has to hold on to this victory and for the moment it's in his hands we are under three laps to go parsons trying to close in here and how about it jerry garrett or pat patterson anything late in the pits anything you're hearing on the radios for those three es trio up in front pat anything new no kim the only thing down in the dodson pit right now is they're just watching and waiting there's no fuel cans up on the wall so it's just it's just a situation where they'll sit back and watch let's go up to jerry gary for any thoughts he may have well everybody's just like you and i are pat they're just a spectator down here watching how this thing's going to come out i think that the time that they could have any impact on the race is over with here's wallace coming back by and there are two laps remaining his lead is about one second well rusty wallace may be the road race king of winston cup racing he proved himself at the glen and now he is going to make a double mark with a road race victory here at riverside really putting the stamp on his road racing ability if he can pull this one off back to six he comes about a lap and a half remaining here's kyle diving to the inside kyle trying to move underneath and not getting there [Music] i think he's going to take a stab right here he's inside he's down to the bottom of that turn eight gets through and he goes right back outside and benny parsons again is in the second position well that was a good lesson though kyle will remember that the rest of his life he went in too hard to stick down on the bottom let's take a look at that one uh here's here's kyle on that negative camber corner remember it slopes the wrong way is working against him here benny says thank you very much i'll take it back that's called going for it and this young boy went for it tried to intimidate the old timer and there goes the old timer is that experience well that's what that did that just won the race for rusty wallace when those two guys had that little run in that took all chances of many catching you my thing so it's in the lap totally of rusty wallace now and his crew white flag is out last lap is on for wallace sideways and turn number one he's fun to watch yeah he's taking he knows he has it one so he's taking it real real careful through here you saw him go sideways one wheel off the ground yep standing straight up sawing it it that's his idea of conservatives we call him hyper man down in the pit you call him hyper man yeah he can't stand still even when you're talking to him you can if you can get that shot he sits straight up in the race car he's awesome proud on their feet and cheering for rusty wallace st louis missouri driver for pontiac and for the raymond beatle team comes around eight [Music] in total control of this thing at the moment just praying that engine doesn't come unglued after the tremendous strain of running 119 laps 311 miles around this tough old riverside international raceway allen kowicki pulls on pit road toward the end here well one of the tough things that crew chief barry dodson on this car is my next-door davir and he's also phil parsons next door neighbor on lake norman back north carolina so we're gonna have a long week back in denver north carolina here's rusty wallace in for the final lap last time around for him as he streaks back toward the line he's into turn nine the final corner and rusty wallace the missouri driver will win here today he's across taking the checkered flag is wallace a great victory for this raymond beetle team and their second on a road course in 1987 finishing second is benny parsons and third is kyle petty fourth across the line will be richard petty fifth is bobby allison six is terry lobotti you'll meet the winner in a moment here comes 17 down to the line rusty is wiping off the grime of 119 laps of racing around this course getting ready to get out of the car get a word with him here being congratulated by his crew receiving the congratulations of the crowd okay let's move in here rusty seems like you're the champion of nascar's road racing circuit this year hands down well i don't know the guy's done a great job preparing this car the kodiak pontiac i mean it just run flawlessly uh you know i can't say enough about the whole crew but we got a good road racing car and those guys did a good job and i just try to keep the thing out of trouble they teach me a lot seemed like that flamboyant style ears on these road courses were going to burn up your tires there at the end did you have any concern about tires no people got different opinions about riverside some like to take it easy somebody could drive it hard i like to drive it hard and just keep the wheels behind me and keep it digging you were driving around people all day that were driving real hard jeff beaudine and dale earnhardt they both had problems did you come to a conclusion whether you could handle them if it came down to the battle between them well the last caution jeff's been dominant all throughout the day and the last caution plague there i got tires and took off and i said barry i think i'm catching them man i kept running them down and running them down and catch them through turn nine and then all of a sudden and then uh and then uh yeah i just i told him i'm catching him and all of a sudden he ran off the racetrack and i guess he was getting ready to pit so it turned out good for him i think i was getting him at the end there introduced this lovely lady here in victory circle with you my wife patty seems like every time i bring her she wins patty did did your husband tell you anything about what his expectation was today in the race he just said that he thought the car was running real good and they were expecting to have a good day did you think you were going to win it beforehand yeah i was hoping you know this was a lot harder than watkins glenn was we had our car a little more prepared i had to drive a lot harder today and i did it to glenn i'll pay it off once again for you congratulations rusty
