1966 Cards at Cowboys GOTW week 13

[Applause] [Music] the last time these two teams met they locked horns in a mighty defensive struggle which ended in a tan tan tie today the issue remains to be resolved they are still tied for the eastern conference league with identical records of eight victories two defeats and one tie the winner of this game will become the odds-on favorite to capture the eastern conference crown [Music] the battleground is the cotton bowl in dallas where some 77 thousand fans sit shrouded beneath a blanket of fog for the nfl game of the week matching the st louis cardinals against the dallas cowboys [Music] [Applause] [Music] cowboy quarterback don meredith has thrown 23 touchdown passes tops in the nfl but in his previous confrontation with the cardinals meredith ran afoul of the crack st louis secondary which intercepted three of his passes dan reeves leads the league in touchdown scored with 14. he's been the major surprise in the cowboys rise to prominence reeves the former south carolina quarterback runs passes and receives [Applause] cardinal placement specialist jim bakken with five field goals has accounted for all of the points in the last two big red games bakken has been successful on 20 of 28 field goal attempts in johnny rowland st louis has a halfback was a leading contender for rookie of the year honors bobby joe conrad heads a core of able cardinal receivers unfortunately since the loss of regular quarterback charlie johnson the big red air arm has been impotent feisty pat fisher has returned to his cornerback position his damaged knee once again as whole and his presence makes the strong cardinal defense even stronger rival coaches charlie winter of the cardinals on the left and tom landry have their teams honed to a razor's edge this is the big one and they're ready for it after receiving the opening kickoff the cowboys failed to make a first down and danny villanueva is in punt formation villanueva punted to roland he called for the fair catch fumbled and jd smith covered for dallas the first break of the game goes to the cowboys first and ten cowboys ball cardinal territory number 30 dan reeves breaks in the open for a touchdown 45 yards we'll repeat that play and you can watch the safety blitz meredith caught the cardinals in it and there reeves goes the secondary exposed as he goes all the way for a touchdown a perfect call by don meredith so the funnel recovery has led to the first score it's a cowboy seven the cardinals nothing danny villanueva kicking off it's a short kick dave long number 89 takes it for the cards [Applause] a return of nine yards johnson making the tackle [Applause] here in a foggy day in the cotton bowl terry nafsinger quarterbacking for the cards it's jackie smith 29 yards before he's pushed out of bounds by mike gector and mel renfro we'll repeat that play from the end zone camera smith cutting across almost breaking into the open does go for 29 yards [Applause] on third down terry screen [Applause] to roland and look at the blocking out in front of roland now on third and ten knobsinger trying to move the cardinals in close throws deep for bobby joe conrad broken up by green [Applause] it's fourth and ten and defensive stars jerry stovall on the left and don brahm realize that strategy dictates a field goal attempt bakken will be trying from the 25-yard line [Applause] here it is right through there it's the cowboy seven the cardinals three after failing to make a first down the cowboys returned to the bench where don meredith and his mates discussed the cardinal defensive alignments now on second down johnny rowland gets the call it's eight yards before gector among others make the tackle this time it's princess scott and again the gain eight yards renfro and edwards making the stop [Applause] naf singer to sonny randall for nine yards livingston chasing him out of bounds on third and one this is premise got number 22 breaking tacklers going for three yards terry noffsinger [Applause] who hasn't been too successful in taking the cardinals to touchdowns this time hits bobby joe conrad in a good catch for 19 yards that's cornell green who made the stop [Applause] down on the dallas goal line it's roland getting the call driving in for one yard now on third down coming up and a yard to go that's how close not a yard just about an inch [Applause] the cardinals get set and charlie winter looks on anxiously roland against that dallas line he's in there for a touchdown cardinals 10 the cowboy 7. offensive tackle tony licio a 6'5 260 pounder from tulsa observes the second period action as the cardinals regain possession and drive to midfield first and ten for the cardinals [Applause] johnny rowland the workhorse of the cardinals attack on the ground goes for five yards and again roland in a good move as he drives through breaking from one tackler and going for 19 yards on second down it's prentice scott on the draw play dropped by willie townes a loss of three kicking specialist jim bakken realizes that should the cardinals fail to pick up the first down he must be ready for a field goal effort [Applause] on third and 13 knobsinger back to pass look out the blitz was on dave edwards and chuck howley dropped him for a loss of 13 yards now the field goal that might have been easy is going to be long from 51 yards out [Applause] no good short it's a touch back [Applause] this is 270 pound rookie willie townes who had a big hand in turning back that last big red drive second down with the cowboys with the ball they're behind they trail meredith to dan reeves for 16 yards [Applause] now on first down meredith intended for pete jett almost intercepted by pat fisher and pat fisher is unhappy [Applause] now on third down don meredith looking for frank clark it's no good but the penalty marker is down and the cardinals are going to be penalized for interference on jerry stovall [Applause] don meredith to bobby hayes for three yards and the penalty marker again has dropped another 15-yarder for a personal foul in two plays now penalties have cost the cards 30 yards [Applause] first and ten on the 25 and don meredith throwing deep to bobby hayes he's in there for a touchdown we'll take a look at that play again from the end zone angle and you can see that bobby hayes has a step on pat fisher and a step is all this speedster needs cowboys 14 the cardinals 10. the cardinals are unable to mount a drive and jackie smith is back to punt it's high and short and the ball took a backward bounce it's taken by chuck holly and he returns it some 30 yards now with five minutes remaining it's first and goal on the eight dan reeves that's jim bokey leading the blocky again of four brahm the tackler now on third and goal on the three don perkins fumble and pat fisher recovers for the cardinals [Applause] it's a touch back and the ball will go out to the 20-yard line looking on a pretty girl but at the moment [Applause] an unhappy one [Applause] terry nausinger to bobby joe conrad for three yards [Applause] 14 to 10 the score the cowboys leading the cardinals here in the second quarter in the fog naf nafsinger again back to pass throwing deep it's tipped by chuck holly and there is mel renfro intercepting he's off for that cardinal goal line good play here by ernie mcmillan slowing him up so that billy gambrell can tackle him from behind two minutes remain here in the first half the cowboys leading the cardinals [Applause] don perkins great effort by perkins going in for the touchdown this is don perkins small as fullbacks go but a rugged determined runner who has just redeemed himself for his earlier fumble cowboys 21 the cardinals 10. less than a minute remains in the half terry nafsinger trying to get his team on the scoreboard again to johnny rowland 18-yard gain jordan and livingston making the tackle offensive tackle ralph neely a 270-pounder from oklahoma knows that the defense can't let up for even a single play 18 seconds remaining in the half nafsinger to jackie smith breaking one tackler he goes for 14 yards [Applause] now with eight seconds left in the half bakken will try a field goal from 34 yards out no good it's wide and at the end of the half it's the cowboys 21 the cardinals 10. during the first half the cardinals have made three big errors and each one has led to a cowboy touchdown this year dallas is unbeaten in the cotton bowl but they still have a half to play cardinals ball here early in the third quarter johnny rowland trying to go to the outside and picks up six yards naf singer to gambrell for five yards [Applause] and that same play to gambrell it's another five yards [Applause] this is premise scott two-yard gain holly and jordan making the stop [Applause] knock singer to billy gambrell for nine yards crenshaw and big willis rambles for 11 yards before renfro can bring him down and cowboy coach tom landry finds it perplexing that st louis has been able to maintain ball control against the sturdy dallas defense now on second down nofsinger fumbles the ball and it's recovered by edwards for the cowboys and another error stymies the cards on the dallas 25 yard line third down and long yardage [Applause] don meredith again set to throw no good but a penalty marker is down and the cardinals are penalized 15 yards for roughing the passer another costly st louis penalty [Applause] first in town on the 40. don meredith throwing deep for bobby hayes he has it 51-yard gain woodson preventing a touchdown perkins off right tackle for four yards the third quarter ends with the score the cowboys 21 the cardinals 10 and ernie macmillan knows the time is running out on the big red [Applause] third and goal in the three meredith for pete gent and the pass is just a little long and on fourth down danny villanueva will try a field goal from 10 yards out it's good cowboys 24 the cardinals 10. [Applause] villanueva kicking off [Applause] not a long kick roy shivers comes up to take it [Applause] good blocking and a good move by shivers and he comes back 43 yards logan making the tackle [Applause] on the dallas 42 nafsinger to jackie smith [Applause] 15 yards before jordan bumps him out of bounds [Applause] now on third down naf singer back to pass andrey comes in to drop him for a loss of seven yards and on fourth down jim bakken will try a field goal from the 40-yard line it's short and to the left [Applause] the cardinals are on their feet here in the dense fog at the cotton bowl as villanueva gets set to punt from deep in the end zone waiting for the ball johnny rowland good locking and a good return and it gives the cards excellent field position [Applause] on second down and 10 to go in dallas territory naf singer to billy gambrell in the end zone for a touchdown gambrell's touchdown has closed the gap now 24 to 17. [Applause] with four minutes remaining the stingy big red defense has forced dallas to punt giving the cards another chance 24 to 17 is the score a touchdown and a point after he'll tie it up knobsinger to gambrell good move by billy and the play results in 30 yards nafsinger looking for a target fumbles the ball again and the fumble that has plagued the cardinals throughout the afternoon as occurred once more recovered by andrea of the cowboys [Applause] following a missed field goal the cards get still another chance a minute 36 remains knock singer intercepted by cornell green the good dallas defense coming up with that football and the flag goes down another 15 yards [Applause] don perkins a big hole on the left side of the line he is in there for the final touchdown of the game [Applause] dallas proves an opportunistic team by converting five cardinal errors into five scores and despite the fact that they were outgained by the cardinals the cowboys win 31-17 to take first place in the eastern conference [Applause] you
