does running a display at 60 HZ on a smartphone compared to 120 HZ save you that much more in battery well let's find this out between the Galaxy s24 Ultra iPhone 15 Pro Max and a pixel 8 Pro 120 HZ versus 60 HZ now we've already debunked the mythware running the display at 1080p versus QHD 1440p makes no difference to the controlled battery drain environment that we have even when we are actually running this on mobile data and not Wi-Fi so we wanted to actually identify what is the difference between 120 HZ and 60 HZ so for the display settings for both Android phones which is the Galaxy s24 Ultra and also the pixel 8 Pro we are running them at their Default Resolution out of the box at 1080P and then we are dropping a refresh rate to 60 HZ now for the iPhone you do have to go into accessibility and then into motion and then limit frame rate that's how you actually drop it down to 60 HZ it's not in the display settings it is in accessibility with motion and you limit the frame rate that's how we have the display running at 60 HZ on all these devices including the iPhone 15 Pro Max now the performance profile for the Galaxy s24 Ultra is set to the default standard mode and anything that would actually limit performance we've also turned it off in the power saver mode to ensure that we get the best battery performance all the way through to the end anything that comes to Adaptive battery has been disabled anything that will hold it back to give us the best battery performance and of course in terms of the battery health on the iPhone 15 Pro Max it is at 100% so we should have this all set up for all three devices all three devices are running on the latest version of their software at the time of this recording and of course we are running this on mobile data and not Wi-Fi now for the display brightness I have disabled any form of auto brightness true tone adaptive tone display and set the calibration to 200 nit as close as possible across the board with that out way let's get into this battery drain test let's start things off with this battery drain test comparison between the Galaxy s24 Ultra iPhone 15 Pro Max and the pixel 8 Pro running in 120 HZ versus 60 HZ refresh rate setting and again we're going to go through each interval an hour on each app that I use and pretty much see are we going to be saving any battery again we did not see any difference between between the resolution of QD to 1440p are we going to see a difference between the refresh rate at 120 HZ to 60 HZ oo that's going to be a very interesting one and as always you're going to be shocked in terms of what you're going to find out now kicking things off at the beginning with the 120 HZ rating 100% battery and we've got 31.1 de CSUS on the Galaxy s24 Ultra then we've got 31.1 de Cs on the 15 Pro Max and also 32.6 de C on the pixel8 pro all 100% 60 HZ is at 28.4 de C to start it off and then we've got a 100% battery charge on the 15 Pro Max still and that is 28.9 De C and also you do have 28.9 de C starting off at this early stage again do watch this at the highest resolution at 4K 60 and also try and zoom in you can pinch the zoom on your phone and get as close to seeing it as possible okay so the first app that we're run into and it's going to be Tik Tok and of course Tik Tok as I always say it's the wicked Wild West if you want to follow us there follow us at lover of techba where you get all your extra vertical content as well so pretty much an hour of Tik Tok when it comes to going through and seeing what is going to be the battery difference across the 120 HZ and the 60 HZ and I've tried to run it as identical as possible of course on mobile data no Wi-fi here baby so this is our Extreme battery drain test comparing the screen refresh rates and seeing if it's going to be any difference compared to the resolution so 120 HZ when we look at Galaxy s24 Ultra it's at 87% 36° C 15 Pro Max is at 91% and it's 35.6 de C pixel 8 Pro it's at 90% 36.2 de C 60 HZ s24 Ultra 87% and then you've got 35.5 de C 15 Pro Max 92% 34.4 de C and the pixel 8 Pro at 89% 34.8 de C again I've got the marked loss of percentage when it comes to the battery for each interval so again you can reference to that we're not see much difference maybe a percent or two but yeah that's more on the iPhone and the pixel8 pro but the Galaxy S tur4 is pretty much going in the same direction next interval for the next hour is of course Instagram where we're pretty much going and scrolling through an hour worth of real and seeing how do they perform when it comes to the battery and I've always found in the past that Instagram seems to drain a lot more battery in this particular segment so maybe it's just more resource intensive application compared to Tik Tok so once we have about an hour worth of Instagram where will we be when it comes to the battery drainage across the board so first with 120 htz you've got the Galaxy s24 Ultra at 73% 36.2 de C 15 Pro Max at 7 6% battery and then that is at 37.8 de c pixel8 pro 73% and is at 38.3 de C Now 60 HZ Galaxy s24 Ultra 73% battery 36.5 de C iPhone 15 Pro Max 77% 77% battery at 37.2 de C and the pixel 8 Pro is at 74% and that is 36.3 de C when it comes to the battery wow again still no difference especially when we're looking at the Galaxy s24 Ultra with the pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max maybe you're gaining an extra percent maybe it's just a use case scenario now switching to what probably ends up being one of the most intensive part of this battery drain test before we get to the camera live streaming co- collaborative live streaming on Instagram something I do more on a regular basis now when I see my fellow content creators that jump on catch up with our audience and just pretty much have a little BTS fun and catch up and see where we are but yeah an hour of Instagram streaming yeah really really gets tax in and when it comes to 120 HZ across the board with have the Galaxy s24 Ultra we are looking at 48% battery and it's at 42.4 De C iPhone 15 Pro Max 54% battery and that's at 40.9 De c pixel8 pro is at 46% battery and it's at 47.2 De C now for the 60 HZ read in the Galaxy s24 Ultra 51% Battery 43.2 De C iPhone 15 Pro Max is at 55% battery and it's at 43.3 De C and the pixel 8 Pro is at 46% battery and it's at 45.5 de C wow okay so we are pretty much level pagin and on par a percentage gain that you have here with the 15 Pro Max and you've got an extra 3% gain on the s24 Ultra with the 60 hzz after live streaming interesting very interesting again just keep an eye out on the battery drain loss across each segment it's really down below where you can see it there so this is pretty much getting into what we have next which is going to be YouTube so again an hour of our ultimate and definitive camera comparison across the board for these three phones definitely go check it out if you haven't already our most intensive and definitive camera comparison yet now as we're going through we're seeing this that it's actually working through nicely across all the devices you know this is quite intense on a modem and streaming especially at 4K 60 so it held up and sometimes you can get drops and buffers it's hard to control it when you're on mobile data compared to when you're on the Wi-Fi so yeah this is uh hold your breath and get through 120 HZ we've got 32% Battery 35.9 De C for the s 24 Ultra and 15 Pro Max is at 37% battery and it's 36.5 de c and a pixel 8 Pro is at 30% battery and it's 36.7 de C now the 60 HZ rating it's at 34% battery on the Galaxy s24 Ultra 36.9 de C iPhone 15 Pro Max is at 37% battery and it's 36.3 de C radian and the pixel 8 Pro is at 27% battery and it's at 38 8.4 de C temperature reading after 1 hour of YouTube streaming at 4K 60 FPS wow okay so where are the Gams it's actually seeming less than a pixel and it seems the same on the iPhone and then it's slightly more on the Galaxy s24 Ultra with the 60 HZ by 2% and of course once we get into YouTube music you know the album that I like and I run through if you've been here before Kane West's College Drop Out and man this one is just like I was just getting there and this is the part where I look forward to the most the songs get me through um what was the song that was really getting me through this time I would say uh get him high definitely cuz I felt high in the way that I was feeling tired and sleep deprived you know I'm not even going to lie to you so really I'll take whichever Trap by getting high was the one that was getting me through you know so yeah stay sober but that's how I was feeling all right 120 HZ rate and after 1 hour of YouTube music s24 Ultra 22% battery 32.8 de C iPhone 15 Pro Max is at 19% battery 37.5 de C pixel 8 Pro is at 16% Battery 35.7 De C Now 60 HZ rating s24 Ultra 19% battery 36.4 de C iPhone 15 Pro Max 20% battery 37.3 de C and the pixel 8 Pro is at 16% Battery 34.4 De C okay we're getting through getting through had to read it off get into the next phase Twitter spaces for an hour across all three devices co-hosting just seeing how they simulate Twitter performance with Twitter spaces which can be quite intensive especially on the Android devices but in general now in this particular situation we got to keep an eye out and see which one's going to buckle first is it going to be the 120 HZ or is it going to be the 60 HZ version and I know if you remember from this case the phone that should really be going first at this period of time is going to be the 120 HZ version of the pixel 8 Pro right and that finishes at 5 hours 54 minutes and 26 seconds with a final temperature reading of 38.1 de C so what that basically tells me is that at this particular point the pixel 8 Pro with the 60 HZ refresh rate seems to benefit ever so slightly it might be in a margin of error but it looks like it's going to make it into the next phase of what we're seeing here and obviously you can see the battery ratings on all the other devices uh Galaxy s24 Ultra it's at 10% 120 HZ 15 Pro Max 8% and then the 60 HZ Galaxy s24 Ultra is at 11% and then a 15 Pro Max there with the rating as you saw so next is going to be at the 6 hour mark at the final rating what we have here is 9% for the Galaxy s24 alra 120 HZ 35.0 de C 15 Pro Max 7% 35.2 de cus 60 HZ is 10% on the Galaxy s24 Ultra and it's 31.7 de C and what you have here with the 15 Pro Max at 60 HZ 9% battery temperature reading 33.2 de C and the pixel 8 Pro with 60 HZ 2% battery and it's at 36.2 de C pixel it made it into the next phase I think this is the first time I've seen it drop into the next phase with all the new testings I've been doing it's going into the 4K 60 FPS video recording mode so how long is the pixel 8 Pro with the 6s going to last well it seems like it's there at 6 hours 6 minutes and 7 seconds before it packs in wow so we are seeing it's some form of a marginal difference around 12 12 minutes 12 minutes compared to running at 120 HZ again that could be in the margin of error and again based on how the apps are where there's less scrolling potentially that might be fair in it but you know I was doing it in the reals as well as the Tik Tok so we could pretty much say that as well we do get a final temperature reading of 38.6 De C so in as controlled environment as possible it looks like you gaining an extra 12 minutes of usage based on how I've tested it on mobile data and not Wi-Fi yeah you get a bit more if you're using 60 HZ how however much more really up to you how you see it so we're going to be running it through its paces and seeing which ones are going to be saying goodbye next and of course it's the battle between the Galaxy s24 Ultra and the iPhone 15 Pro Max what we working with what we working with how are we going about it so 7% and it's like wow 60 HZ is this going to be enough for the Galaxy s24 Ultra to clothe back in 60 HZ and have an upset against the 15 Pro Max ooh I'm not entirely sure if that's going to be the case but let's see how it it goes let's see how it goes but I think the 120 HZ ones are the ones that are going to go no actually not it's the 60 HZ Galaxy s24 Ultra 6 hours 60 minutes and 32 seconds with a final temperature reading of 41.5 De Celsius ah it seems that video recording really taxes the Galaxy s24 Ultra and it looks like for it the ltpo display is doing what it needs to be doing potentially the optimization is there and you're not really gaining much battery based on my particular usage scenario by going to 60 HZ H interesting that is very very very very very interesting and then the 120 HZ version of the Galaxy s24 Ultra packs it in at 6 hours 17 minutes and 5 seconds with a final temperature reading of 40.1 De c ah in the margin of era basically call it the same in my usage scenario mobile data no Wi-Fi with 120 HZ versus 60 HZ man you ain't gaining much when it comes to battery life on the Galaxy s24 Ultra and then next what do we have to go we do have the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 120 HZ at 6 hours 18 minutes and 47 seconds with final temperature reading of 37.0 De C okay so it looks like the one that benefits the most by the looks of it at 60 HZ by limiting the frame rate is the iPhone 15 Pro Max The Last Man Standing here's the last man standing wow iPhone 15 Pro Max 2% battery at 6 hours 19 minutes and 59 seconds how are we counting down and how far do we think it's going to go let's bet it what do you think it's going to finish on is it actually going to push through 1% battery at 6 hours 22 minutes ooh when is it going to end when is it going to end and I'm telling you the last 1% on an iPhone is very stubborn so let's place our bets and see how far is it going to go man the raining battery champ the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 60 htz how far is it going to go it's going to finish at 6 hours 23 minutes and 33 seconds with a final temperature reading of 39.0 De [Music] C [Music] so for the finishing positions in third place is the pixel 8 Pro with the first one going at 120 HZ and that's at 5 hours 54 minutes and 26 seconds followed by the pixel 8 Pro in 60 HZ that finished at 6 hours 6 minutes and 7 Seconds this is a great result because it actually made it into the 4K 60 FPS mode for the camera which it hasn't ever so this is great to see it looks like you do gain a bit more when using the pixel 8 Pro in 60 HZ even when you're on mobile data in second place is the Galaxy s24 Ultra we're funny enough the 60 HZ version finishing at 6 hours 160 minutes and 32 seconds compared to the 120 HZ version finishing in 6 hours 70 minutes and 5 Seconds now this is definitely in the margin of error call it the same it looks like on the Galaxy s24 Ultra in our controlled environment on mobile data with no Wi-Fi you gain no extra battery if you're running at 60 HZ so you might as well just enjoy the 120 HZ as well as the QHD and finishing in first place is the iPhone 15 Pro Max with the 120 HZ version finishing at 6 hours 180 minutes and 47 seconds compared to the 60 HZ version finishing in 6 hours 23 minutes and 33 seconds boy it looks like the 4,441 mamp battery and the chipset inside and the optimization here from IOS looks to be doing the job it's very very efficient even when it comes to 4K 60 recording which is usually very intense now we've debunked the myth of resolution difference at Q and 1080p we've just debunked the myth of 120 HZ versus 60 HZ now we're going to be doing a comparison of the Wi-Fi versus mobile data if it's not live already and if is live already go watch it but if not live stay tuned as I will be producing that as I've recorded it and it's in the editing phase again when it comes to the lack of difference between 120 HZ and 60 HZ it could be down to lack of scrolling the apps I'm using the usage but I think it's safe to say these Flagship phones are well optimized for you to be able to enjoy the full 120 HZ as well as the maximum scen resolution were you surprised by the results just like I was let me know in the comment section below that's it for me Ben from love Tech if you enjoy videos like
