[Music] glory to god [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you friends welcome to st patrick's for this celebration of uh our sunday eucharist today on this particular sunday our local church here in melbourne and throughout victoria commemorate and celebrate if you like social services sunday an opportunity for us to recall in our prayer and in our actions all that is done in the works of what we might call the corporal works of mercy through various organ catholic organizations through our parishes and individuals who in all sorts of ways reach out to those in need and are a sign and a presence of the hand of christ to others so i invite you to join with me in in praying in gratitude and thanksgiving to the lord for all all the great works that are done for the service of others throughout our archdiocese and throughout victoria generally as we begin our celebration of the eucharist today let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves for these sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sinned through my faults and in my words in what i have done and what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary of a virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] christ have mercy christ [Music] see [Music] glory to god [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god [Music] heavenly father and on earth [Music] lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive [Music] you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us glory and on earth [Music] for you [Music] jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father [Music] to god in our hearts and on earth [Music] me let us pray o god who founded all the commandments of your sacred law upon love of you and of our neighbor grant that by keeping your precepts we may merit to attain eternal life through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god for ever and ever [Music] from the book of wisdom the godless say to themselves let us lie in wait for the virtuous man since he annoys us and opposes our way of life reproaches us for our breaches of the law and accuses us of playing false to our upbringing let us see if what he says is true let us observe what kind of end he himself will have if the virtuous man is god's son god will take his part and rescue him from the clutches of his enemy let us test him with cruelty and with torture and thus explore this gentleness of his and put his endurance to the proof let us condemn him to a shameful death since he will be looked after we have his word for it the word of the lord [Music] he upholds my life [Music] oh god save me by [Music] o god hear my prayer listen to the words of my mouth [Music] for proud men have risen against me ruthless men seek my life they have no regard for god upholds my life but i have god for my help the lord upholds my life i will sacrifice to you with willing heart and praise your name for it is good upholds my life [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james wherever you find jealousy and ambition you find disharmony and wicked things of every kind being done whereas the wisdom that comes down from above is essentially something fewer it also makes for peace and is kindly and considerate it is full of compassion and shows itself by doing good nor is there any trace of partiality or hypocrisy in it peacemakers when they work for peace sow the seeds which will bear fruit in holiness where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves you want something and you haven't got it so you are prepared to kill you have an ambition that you cannot satisfy so you fight to get your way by force why you don't have what you want is because you don't pray for it when you do pray and don't get it it is because you have not prayed properly you have prayed for something to indulge your own desires the word of the lord [Music] [Music] god has called us with the gospel to share in the glory of the lord [Music] [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark [Music] after leaving the mountain jesus and his disciples made their way through galilee and he did not want anyone to know because he was instructing his disciples he was telling them the son of man will be delivered into the hands of men they will put him to death and in three days after he has been put to death he will rise again but they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him they came to capernaum and when he was in the house he asked them what were you arguing about on the road they said nothing because they had been arguing which of them was the greatest so he sat down called the twelve to him and said if anyone wants to be first he must make himself last of all and servant of all he then took a little child set him in front of them put his arms around him and said to them anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me the gospel of the lord [Music] being a christian that is being a disciple of christ is at one level a bit of a crazy thing to do being a christian means as jesus insisted in the gospel today are surrendering way of living out our lives a surrendering to the mystery of living life that is rejected a surrendering to the mystery of dying and death surrendering to the unfathomable mystery of finding our lives in the life of god no wonder jesus first disciples were confused about the path he was asking them to follow and were afraid to ask what it all meant christianity at one level has always been something of an outlandish proposition us christians after all might live in this world around us but we are asked by the lord not to be of this world crazily we live on the promise of belonging to another world another kingdom by belonging to christ according to evolutionary biology life itself is inherently competitive survival of the fittest does not afford much space for the notion of surrendering when we live according to the world around us that is according to the ways of the world then a certain competitive edge will come to rule our lives to take the way of the gospel to throw our lot in with jesus is to see our lives beyond what is determined by biology or culture or the economy it is to take that crazy decision to step away from what determines our lives and to live it instead in a freedom to give over to something deeper and life-giving to surrender we should not be overly scandalized with the thought that the first apostles became preoccupied with who was the greatest among them it is a question and a disposition that arose because they were still living in the worldly way and by a worldly measure they had not yet surrendered their lives to jesus when we see in ourselves the signs of a competitive streak of a desire to be first over others then we too have not yet embraced the crazy way of the gospel what is crazy at one level is hope and wonder at another level because the way of the least and the little of the humble and the simple turns out to be liberating jesus showed this by presenting his disciples that little child i like to think of that child as having been running around in and out between the legs of all the grown-ups oblivious to what they were discussing this child was free unencumbered by the weight of the world yet also utterly reliant on the adults in its midst a child is the perfect image of what can be trust and hope and jesus embraces this way of living in trust and hope when he embraced the child scrambling around his legs a child is always surrendering over his or her life in trust without even being aware of it children only learn distrust which is different from caution they learn it only from adults sadly distrust is something that is taught we sometimes say this is for their own protection but is that really the case is it not more to do with the fear that rules our worldly lives as jesus sat that child on his lap he wanted to teach his disciples to unlearn the way of fear that seeks to control and conquer in the world children can do crazy things and get away with it because they have not lost the freedom that comes from surrendering in trust at one level taking the christian way is crazy but at that far deeper level it is a way to surrendering ourselves to a more liberating and hopeful life that leads to peace kindness and consideration to compassion and goodness may these fruits grow in us we profess our faith i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead in the life of the world to come amen in humility we turn to god for mercy we pray that our ways may be god's ways our thoughts god's thoughts we pray for pope francis and all bishops of the church may they be an inspiration for all people who labor in the lord's vineyard let us pray to the lord on this heavenly mysteries through christ our lord the lord be with you r [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through christ our lord for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity's fallen state and by his suffering cancelled out our sins by his rising from the dead he has opened a way to eternal life and by sending to you o father he has unlocked the gates of heaven and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without and we are claimed [Music] holy holy holy lord god heaven and earth [Music] is [Music] to you therefore most merciful father we make humble prayer and petition through jesus christ your son our lord that you accept and bless these gifts these offerings these holy and unblemished sacrifices which we offer you firstly for your holy catholic church be pleased to grant her peace to guard order our days in your peace and command that we be delivered from eternal damnation encountered among the flock of those you have chosen be pleased oh god we pray to bless acknowledge and approve this offering in every respect make it spiritual and acceptable so that it may become for us the body and blood of your most beloved son our lord jesus christ on the day before he was to suffer he took bread in his holy and venerable hands and with eyes raised to heaven to you o god his almighty father giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took this precious chalice in his holy and venerable hands and once more giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death [Music] therefore our lord as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed passion the resurrection from the dead and the glorious ascension into heaven of christ your son our lord we your servants and your holy people offered to your glorious majesty from the gifts you have given us this pure victim this holy victim this spotless victim the holy bread of eternal life and the chalice of everlasting salvation be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance and to accept them as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant abel the just the sacrifice of abraham our father in faith and the offering of your high priest melchizedek a holy sacrifice a spotless victim in humble prayer we ask you almighty god command that these gifts be borne by the hands of your holy angel to your altar on high in the sight of your divine majesty so that all of us who through this participation at the altar receive the most holy body and blood of your son may be filled with every grace and heavenly blessing remember also are doing the work of justice and of service uh to those in need throughout our city and and throughout the countryside in victoria some 200 000 people in need are helped each year through those various services but i also want to acknowledge on today what happens in your local circumstances whether it's in what you might do yourself in terms of social outreach to others particularly in this pandemic time but what is also happening and is organized through your parishes and faith communities and there are hundreds of those hundreds of those such organizations and groups and uh activities uh that are going on behind the scenes usually quietly but with great dignity and with the uh care of the souls of those who are reached out to so thank you uh for that there's some information in the in the parish bulletin this week uh just a little bit further information there and a beautiful prayer on in awe and wonder that you might want to take note of on the front page of the bulletin under the information about social services sunday and i just commend that to you and and also just ask for your ongoing prayer of blessing for what you do in the name of jesus christ but also what others are doing for the sake of the good of others so thank you the lord be with you blessed be the name of the lord our help is in the name of the lord and may almighty god bless you all the father the son
