wonder of our god [Music] morning [Music] like the first birth praise for the singing [Music] praise for the morning praise for them springing fresh from the world [Music] sweet the rain's [Music] like the first to fall on the first crest [Music] praise for the sweetness [Music] strong in completeness [Music] mine is the morning born of the one life [Music] praise every morning god's recreation [Music] like the firstborn blackbird has fallen like the first bird prays for the seed praise for them spreading [Music] fresh from the words [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace and the peace of god our father the immense love the wisdom and the joy of our resurrected and ascended savior jesus our christ and the fellowship of their holy spirit be with you all well hello everyone it is a joy to be with you again on this 27th sunday in ordinary time may i humbly suggest that you find a beautiful place to be where you can be undisturbed and comfortable that you might take the opportunity to unplug from all of your devices except the one on which you're viewing us and that you avail yourselves of this time of grace and quiet and in peace to prepare ourselves for the spiritual nourishment to come during this period let's begin by taking the big spiritual breath in and the big breath out where we let go of all of the context of our busy lives our projects plans schedules especially our worries and concerns we just let them go and become simple we take that second breath in and on the out breath we welcome a moment of interior silence this helps us to enter the contemplative dimension of our faith experience we take that third deep breath in [Music] and on the out breath we sink deeply down into our hearts our wounded hearts from that place of truth we cry out to the master to touch us in exactly that place we need his healing touch the most [Music] here [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] god in amen highest glory glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] we praise you we bless you we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory glory heavenly king oh god almighty father [Music] glory to god is the highest glory glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] lord jesus christ only begotten son lord god lamb of god son of the father you take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the [Music] our prayer you are seated at the right hand of the father have mercy on us glory glory to god in the highest glory glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] for you alone are the holy one you alone are the lord you alone are the most high jesus christ with the holy spirit in the glory of god the father glory glory to god in the highest glory glory to god in the highest and on earth [Music] let us pray almighty ever-living god who in the abundance of your kindness surpass the merits and the desires of those who entreat you pour out your mercy upon us to pardon what conscience dreads and to give what prayer does not dare to ask through your son our lord jesus christ who indeed lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good for the man to be alone i will make a suitable partner for him so the lord god formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all the wild animals but none proved to be a suitable partner for the man the lord god cast a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the lord god then built up into a woman the rib he had taken from the man and when when he brought her to the man the man said one at last is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of her man this one has been taken that is why a man leaves his father and his mother and he clings to his wife and the two of them become one flesh the word of the lord may the lord bless us all the days of our [Music] the lives bless us for the days of our lives blessed are you who fear the lord who walk in his ways for you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork blessed shall you be and may the lord [Music] your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in the recesses of your home your children like olive plants around your table may thy lord [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters he for a little while was made lower than the angels that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone for it was fitting that he for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many children to glory should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering he who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin therefore he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters the word of the lord [Music] if we love one another god remains in us and his love is brought to perfection [Music] a reading from the holy gospel according to mark glory the pharisees approached jesus and asked is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife they were testing him he said to them in reply what did moses command you they replied moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her but jesus told them because of the hardness of their hearts he wrote you this commandment but from the beginning of creation god made them male and female for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh so they are no longer two but one flesh therefore what god has joined together no human must separate in the house the disciples again questioned jesus about this and he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery and people were bringing children to him that he might touch them but the disciples rebuked them when jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them let the children come to me do not prevent them for the kingdom of god belongs to such as these the gospel of the lord jesus christ ah my dear friends i have been blessed with numerous wonderful teachers in my many years of formal education but one of the best hands down was dr dreamly lamberty she taught the psychology section of my later seminary formation we took a course called family therapy i will never forget she began our class by giving us a project called a genogram now a genogram we were to make on a big poster and you would have a circle for a woman a square for a man and this would be your mother and your father and mary they'd be joined by a line and then here comes the offspring and she wanted us to go backward and forward in five generations she wanted the house rules which is an interesting thing what were the house rules growing up and then she said something interesting she said now gentlemen leave out the lettuce tomatoes and the mayonnaise i want the meat give me the meat i'm talking about the divorces i want the criminal activity i want the alcoholism i want the domestic violence i want the imprisonments i want it all so get busy on your assignment you have two weeks call your relatives find out what was going on in these generations well that was quite an assignment and all of us were very challenged by it when we came back with our finished project she told us a little story i will never forget she said i've been giving this assignment for years and years one time i had a young lady turn in a perfect genogram oh it was lovely beautiful white poster board she drew perfect circles perfect squares and she took the trouble even to write the names in with calligraphy and everything was beautiful and everything was perfect in all five generations so i made an appointment with her after class and i said uh dear did i do anything to make you lose trust in me she said what and she said well your genogram i mean it's perfect and by the way you got an a but i'm just wondering why did you find it necessary to lie to me she said what do you mean she said honey not even the waltons on television had a situation like this there's always problems in every family and here yours is squeaky clean why did you feel you couldn't be honest with me and at this that little girl or high school student college student began to cry and she said let's together you and i fill in some of these blanks shall we and it turned out to be a very healing experience for that girl she felt she had to keep everything pristine and perfect that anybody would see and when the truth was out she learned that she could be trusting that someone could love and accept her less than perfect situation so today we have what might appear to be a rather harsh saying of jesus christ he's talking of course about divorce now jesus brings forward to these pharisees always the pharisees big picture covenant truth now covenant is an important key concept to jewish people as well as to us christians there's a huge difference between a contract and a covenant contracts are entered into rather easily and they can be broken rather simply and easily covenants no when a covenant is entered into this is a very deep lifelong fundament a promise a vow and when one party breaks the covenant it remains in force anyway subsequently god who is ever faithful to us for as many times as we are unfaithful the covenant remains in force always it's unbroken it's something divine something pure something perfect jesus is elevating marriage into this realm of living out covenant experience and it is an ideal toward which all of us strive marriage when done really and truly is a gorgeous thing it is so profound it rightly brings children into the world it's a big deal and it's fundamental to the ordering of societies everywhere it also requires every single thing you've got and more it requires an abundance of grace now at sacred heart parish here i'm very fortunate because we've got so many stellar examples of marriages that have gone the distance once a year we have an anniversary mass where we acknowledge people who have been married for 25 years and then 50 years 60 years and beyond last time we had a couple married 73 years and still dancing the tango they're still going strong and i tip my hats to everyone that pulls off a marriage like that and i guarantee you their genogram is full of smudges has to be because it's a very human thing marriage is messy as is life and oftentimes marriages are attempted and they fail for so many reasons but in light of this gospel we dare not despair because as we are going to hear next week jesus will tell his disciples is this too much for you with people it is impossible but not for god with god all things are possible including all of you who have been through the ravages of divorces take heart because to balance this gospel let's not forget the gospel when jesus encounters a woman at a well in the middle of the noonday sun remember that and she's questioning him about the water and he's telling her that he would give her a drink of living water and she's questioning him and he says well go call your husband and she says i don't have a husband and he says oh right the truth is you've had five husbands and the man you're living with now is not your husband jesus entered into the depths of that person's life in just such a way that she becomes the first apostle to the sumerians it's incredible she was chosen to be this astonishing disciple so divorced divorced and remarried take heart god finds a way forward for all of us and is drawn to those who need healing like a magnet as he says the healthy people don't need a doctor but the sick people do those of you who have been battered and bruised and broken-hearted and run through the mill take heart today because christ even while holding the beauty of the ideal before us also makes provisions for a weakness indeed where sin is which is all over our world and within ourselves and in our relationships grace all the more abounds in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen and so do you believe in god the father the almighty the maker of heaven and earth i do too and do you believe in his son our lord jesus christ who was born of the virgin mary suffered under pontius pilate was crucified died and was buried i do and do you believe that jesus who died rose from the dead that he ascended into heaven and he is seated at the right hand of the father to him alone belongs the divine right to judge anyone the living and the dead i do i do too do you believe in the holy spirit the holy catholic church the communion of the saints the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body and life everlasting i do too this is our faith and we celebrate it with such hope and joy in and through the abundant grace of our lord jesus christ jesus said let the little children come unto me as children of god we now turn to the father with our prayers for our holy father pope francis that he will continue to lead the church in proclaiming the good news of christ we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for our nation may god unite us in peace and in respect for each other and for all human life we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer may we be like children in welcoming god's reign full of joy and anticipation eager to do what god wants and filled with trust in god's loving purpose for us all we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for those who have endured the tragedy of divorce for broken families for single-parent homes for all domestic situations that need our prayer we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for a greater respect for human life may god open all hearts to the beauty and the gift of life we pray to the lord r lord hear our prayer for all those who have died may they be immersed in christ's peace for our loved ones for the sick and the homebound the military and law enforcement personnel for first responders and we remember most especially those for whom we have promised to pray we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer god of love you teach us that we must be like children and welcoming your reign into our lives help us to be open to your guiding spirit and to renew each day our hope in you through christ our lord amen [Music] of god the true [Music] we can share with you true [Music] your love with all your souls [Music] fire [Music] we can share with all true love [Music] you should love yourself and love your neighbors [Music] [Applause] [Music] god [Music] [Music] from here we can share with all true love [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father may the lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name for our good and of course holy church except o lord we pray the sacrifices instituted by your commands and through these sacred mysteries which we celebrate with dutiful service graciously complete the sanctifying work by which you are pleased to redeem us through christ our lord the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts we lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for although you have no need of our praise yet our thanksgiving is itself your gift since our praises add nothing to your greatness but profit us for salvation through christ our lord and so in company with the choirs of angels we praise you as with joyful celebration we acclaim [Music] heaven and earth [Music] is [Music] [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of your son jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] and profess your resurrection until you come again [Applause] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope and frank our bishop and all those who serve you remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray that with the blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles saint francis saint claire saint therese and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ [Music] through him and with him and in him o god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and ever [Music] together deeply from our hearts we pray that beautiful and haunting prayer jesus our christ taught us our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus you said to the apostles i leave you peace my peace is my gift to you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and grant us the peace and the unity of your kingdom where you live forever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you always and with your spirit if we are with someone it is the perfect time to turn together and offer a sign of our love affection and peace and if you're tuning in by chance alone let's take the opportunity to wish upon all the world the peace we hold at this moment within our hearts [Music] mercy on us [Music] sins of the world [Music] the lamb of god behold him who takes away the sins of the world blessed are those who are called to the supper of the lamb lord i am not worthy that you should enter under my roof but only say the word and my soul shall be healed my jesus i believe that you are in the blessed sacrament i love you above all things and i long for you and my soul since i cannot receive you sacramentally come at least spiritually into my heart as though you have already come i embrace you and unite myself entirely to you never permit me to be separated from you amen [Music] hold on to love it's all we have to lead on [Music] we only had so many prayers [Music] speak only love [Music] don't be afraid you know
