eagles that sports team not the band we're actually going through the rather unheard of series it's always sunny in philadelphia yes the morally ambiguous gang of five been causing many a laugh all around the world for years now what with it being the longest running live-action sitcom of all time there's a fact for free but how can you visit the pub in real life kind of sort of not really which country has made their own version of the show to not great success and when's that nightman cometh movie coming out i hear superheroes are all the rage these days so better do it quick two enter through this question is gonna be answered so serve up some rum ham and fight milk and maybe an egg in this trying time as we go through the most debauched place in philly with 101 facts about it's always sunny in philadelphia number one it's always sunny in philadelphia it's not a frankly optimistic weather report but is an american sitcom created by rob mckelleny and glenn howerton its inception if you like came in 2004. in the form of a nightmare of rob mckellen nice where a man with cancer tells his friend his diagnosis who rather intensively does not give him any sympathy at all number two using this nightmare the first script was made which became a 10-page pilot the pilot for this episode was later remade as the fourth episode of season one called charlie has cancer number three it's been said that the pilot cost two hundred dollars to make and that was almost solely on camera tape but in a later interview with charlie day he claimed it might not have even cost that himself as far away from his character as possible which fair enough number nineteen howard has confirmed that dennis is a full-blown sociopath but that this was something he wanted to reveal to the audience slowly in an interview he said i always knew he was socio it's been fun to tease it out and let it build over the years number twent to tea before he was one of the gang however took on various casting calls before his big break he auditioned to be superman in the 2006 brian singer movie and auditioned for peter quill that's right legendary outlaw star-lord himself in guardians of school coach but its title may be accurate in another way there are hints throughout the show but mainly in season 5 that uncle jack may have done something similar it's hidden within the lyrics of distorted by being played backwards and season one this is stupid for playing the sword for playing you're stupid for playing this forward but then after that it changes to things with a brown theme not sure why number 33 in season 2 episode 10 dennis and dee get a new dad charlie's giving himself a tattoo because of course he is it's meant to say bad news but he gets interrupted so it just says bad new this is then visible in every single episode after this point number 34 season 4 second episode the gang solves the gas crisis involves the song ghostbusters by ray barker jr busting indeed makes me feel good this is from the movie ghostbusters directed by ivan reitman reitman's daughter catherine is later in always sunny as maureen ponderosa dennis's insane ex-wife number 35 the weirdest who done it in history who pooped the bed bears a small resemblance to murder on the orient express this is because artemis has theories that implicates everybody and spoiler alert here for a book that's 86 years old but in murder on the orange express everyone did it number 36 season 4 episode 10 sweet d has a heart attack contains multiple references to one flew over the cuckoo's nest in the yearbook of dennis was going to be glenn's actual yearbook photo but apparently it's unrecognizable so the photo is just a photoshop version of his current face number 41 cosby show actor something fun indy's costume is in the episode but across the whole gang matt has the hat charlie has the jacket and frank has the whip number 43 if you've watched episode 12 of season 7 if it's cults-like behavior number 50. in one episode in season 11 dennis shows customers a qr code if you use it from the comfort of your own home it links to a scam where you can buy air miles to then fraudulently spend on stakes with no i'm kidding it's a link to fx's website number 51 in season 12 frank at one point mixes up boko haram with boca raton the former being a nigerian terrorist group the latter a town in florida how unrealistic right well actually a real-life congressman paul gosar did exactly this in 2015 while on cnn oops number 52 in june of 2011 rob mckellany got busy by gaining 50 pounds in six months why for a joke he said he noticed that characters in most sitcoms get better looking as they went on due to bigger budgets so he wanted to do the opposite turning mac into big fat mac number 53 he did this by eating over 5000 calories a day most of it from nutritionally viable sources like chicken vegetables boring but some of it from ice cream less boring number 54 the gang gets successful was a season six episode that i bet your favorite right well if you said yes you're a liar because it's never been released or aired to the public and nobody really knows why a lot of it was put into season seven's hal mac got fat basically his before version of mack anyway number five five the season six finale is a lovable christmas episode with one of the most giftable moments of the show when frank slithers out from the couch which is visually a similar scene to ace ventura when nature calls although we don't know if it was directly based on that number 56 in this same episode the gang are on the receiving end of a snowblower danny devito was hesitant to do the stunt because he was thought it was going to be dangerous and it turns out he was right as charlie day bruised his ribs from it number 57 the show actually received 2.28 million viewers for the season 7 premiere which is the highest it's ever had live but a lot of it's always sunny is consumed on streaming sites of which we shall never know the figures number 58 despite its cult audience sunny doesn't get a whole lot of awards it didn't get nominated for an emmy until 2013 and even then it was for stunt coordination and it lost it was also nominated and lost the same award again the following year too this is spoke fun at in the episode title the gang tries desperately to win an award number 59 as we mentioned earlier charlie and rob's wives appear quite regularly on the show so what about glenn's well she played kaylee in the season five episode dennis system number six of t it's worth noting that even though mac and d's actors are married in real life the characters themselves seem to absolutely hate each other i guess you gotta keep it spicy somehow right number 61. ever wanted to go to paddy's pub for real well you can't sorry but you can go to the next best thing rob and katelyn mckelleny actually part own a real bar in philadelphia named max taven and even have some menu items named after their characters too number 62. and even though the gang i'm already questionable at best mckellandy and olsen do not take city behavior lightly in fact diana dash at their establishment and they were publicly shamed to you like they did on facebook to this couple boo that couple number 63 the central paddy's pub is also essentially the same as mclaren's pub for how i met your mother but significantly less busy and shot from different angles the shows both use the same street sets too and sometimes the entrance to mclaren's pub can be visible in it always sunny despite them being set in entirely different cities nintendo 64. the forever put upon rickety cricket whose life is pretty much ruined by the gang is played by david hornsby hornsby is actually a writer on the show having written over 28 episodes of it though none of them seem to have cricket within them number 65 mrs mack's house or rather the exterior of it is actually next door to rob mckellany's childhood home i'm not going to tell you where it is mainly because i don't know but also i don't want to docks the poor guy number 66 fred savage that's right the little kid from the princess bride and the wonder years grew up into an adult man number 62 i'm just kidding that adult man has directed several episodes of always sunny because he and i quote sees his own worst qualities in the characters number 67 in 2009 there was an actual stage adaptation of the nightman cometh it toured six cities across the usa that the company live nation wanted 30. it's basically an extended version of the episode with some extra improvisation and came with a preview of the next season too number 68 in the live musical danny devito got his then wife involved she's an actress called raya pearlman and she played gladys's role and yes by the way she's the same woman that plays matilda's mom in the film matilda number 69 rumham the nightman cometh is a play on the iceman cometh a classic play by eugene o'neill they're very different though iceman is about people in the bar having to face how pointless their lives are and charlie's well we all know what charlie's is about number 17. many of the songs in the show are written by its very own charlie day who's apparently very musically talented he even improvises on set in the form of song sometimes and to be fair i do that too but chris and rasheen tend to just edit it out number 71 hey hey day you can also play the piano oh that doesn't render nay as well as the trombone accordion guitar and harmonica also in 2014 merrimack college gave him an honorary doctorate in the performing arts wow charlie work number 72. dee and mac can be seen wearing t-shirts from a brand called suburban riot hashtag no spawn suburban riot also owned by an old school friend of robs which is a staggering coincidence isn't it number 73 the stunningly impractical green man is another thing that came directly from mckellany's real life a friend of his would dress like this for american football games specifically for the philadelphia eagles number 74. this friend actually did something pretty sneaky but still respectable he claimed the rights to the outfit which then meant fx had to pay him whenever it was used in the show cheching hustle baby i'm sorry it's really warm in here i don't know what i'm doing number 75 believe it or not although you should believe it because it is true there's a russian version of the show called it's always sunny in moscow which isn't even true they share the same premise a group of friends own a bar together but in this show the bar is called philadelphia in a call back to the original number 76 however it had the dire misfortune of being absolutely terrible it only ran for 16 episodes it was pretty much a shot for shot remake with the same script but translated but apparently the old humor didn't translate too well number 77 one of the most beloved things to come out of always sunny is rum ham which first appeared in season seven as a bastion of wilson who is personally my favorite character who's a ball from the film cast away number 78 the gang from always sunny actually released a faux self help book called the seven secrets of awakening the highly effective four-hour giant today brackets the gang writes self-help book which among other things contains the recipe for rum ham apparently it's a one pound canned ham one hunting knife three liter bottles of rum one handgun one box of handgun ammo and one bunch of italian parsley the gun and the ammo is for the ham pirates by the way you don't want to put those in the oven number 79 if you were ever wondering what rum ham tastes like to quote charlie day who tried it for real it's disgusting well that's one kristen ruin but i've already made it now number 80. other topics in that book by the way include relationships careers and survival skills apparently it's a right reference fest but you do have to ignore the fact that canonically charlie can't read number 81 in season 5 matt creates a special towel that has a uh key attribute shall we say he creates a website for them too a website you can visit in real life and buy said towel from or rather you could because for me it won't load anymore number 82 we've mentioned rum ham but we can't not to mention the other big always sunny moments pepe silvia and charlie's frantic investigation into what it is a theory appeared on the internet that pepe silvia was actually just the word pennsylvania but charlie can't read so he got it wrong this however was later debunked by the writers as not true number 83 barney the guy that charlie can see but nobody else can is dressed very similarly to william parcher from the film a beautiful mind who like barney is a figment of russell crowe's imagination well okay not his but his characters and also his character doesn't see barney look i really worded that badly okay number 84. danny devito quite literally nearly died while shooting an underwater sequence because it turns out that mr davitz is prone to bobbing so they had to weigh him down bear in mind he's in his early 70s devito struggled to go back to the surface again and had to be rescued by divers number 85 mckellany is very passionate about gay rights as his mother came out when he was eight and his brother is also gay eventually matt comes out as gay on the show to the surprise of literally nobody number 86 in fact in 2016 the gang appeared on a float at the la pride parade which some thought was filming for the program but instead it was a show of solidarity number 87 despite all the alcohol the gang chokes down on on set the cast never ever drank alcohol on set it's all acting in fact howiton said on a reddit ama that it would make insurance incredibly high and endanger the show if they did number 88 the uh beloved writers david benioff and db vice were longtime fans of the show and wrote an episode called flowers for charlie it's actually a good episode and is in no way unnecessarily rush because they wanted to pursue other projects which is unlike them number 89 in turn mckellen was a big fan of game of thrones and made it to west ross in season eight where his eye got completely destroyed by an arrow which we obviously can't show number 90. in return benny often vice guest starred in season 12 as the gang goes to a water park they played lifeguards who were rather bored which is probably as enthralled as they were while writing the end of game of thrones number 91 bern gorman also stars in an episode and it's the best of both cameo flavors he's in game of thrones as carl turner and was also charlie day's buddy in pacific rim number 92 the character of damaniac is a reference to the main character of the movie the wrestler as he too is well a wrestler who's fallen on hard times number 93 apparently most of the cast know exactly how always sunny will end howard says he's known since the beginning and mckellany has also told his wife some of the details but not all about the ending i mean they're definitely all going to dive right that's the only way this can end number 94 that's if there is an ending because mckellen says he wants to make the show forever as long as people still watch it i for one i'm looking forward to season 69 and 420 because they'll probably do some great things with those numbers number 95 in case you were wondering by the way it takes about five months to make just one season of it's always sunny which is approximately five-ninths of how long it takes to make a human being number 96 apparently rob mckellany and glenn howerton just can't stay away from each other as they both had roles on the fx show fargo too albeit in different seasons number 97 if you look closely charlie's signature army jacket has a little blue badge with wings on it this is a navy rating symbol for aviation electronics and would only be worn on dress uniforms for special occasions number 98 caitlin alton is a badass that's it that's the fact no i'm kidding but she is and does all of her own stunts including going head first into a car door number 99. however olson is not unbreakable she broke her back in 2008 and was recovering during the filming of season four so you know that sun's in season five when she falls down the stairs that was pushed back a season to avoid making her injury worse number 100 yes she's actually been injured a number of times on the show she admitted to having see a chiropractor after the car door stunt and landed herself in the emergency room after ripping her leg wide open on a steel grate during filming you could see her shin bone number 101. mack actually got to play catch with his hero chase utley during his jersey retirement in 2019. after the ceremony mckellen came out to receive the game's first pitch from philly's legend dudely and thus a 10-year storyline met its satisfying conclusion just
