believe it or not dinosaurs comprise only a tiny percentage of prehistoric creatures their time on earth was memorable but short-lived compared to many other successful organisms and they weren't even the scariest well some definitely on their own but as you'll see in this video there were plenty of non dinosaurs that were just as scary make sure to stay tuned until the end to see if Leila's bird that was t-rexes terrifying successor before we get things rolling take a minute to like this video subscribe to the richest and join our notification squad also check out our community tab for some funny memes and interesting facts now here are 10 terrifying prehistoric creatures that weren't dinosaurs arthropleura remember that scene in king kong where the giant insects consumed the crew members were sorry for reminding you about it as this is a scene we'd also like to forget the idea of human sized bugs is just so unnatural that it doesn't make you shiver it will at least make you wanna gag we're sorry again to report to you guys that insects of this size did exist and the most terrifying and disgusting one of them all was the arthropleura Arthur plural was a species of millipede that lived during the Carboniferous period that occurred 300 million years ago the Carboniferous period predated the dinosaurs and was defined by its atmospheric oxygen content which was the highest in world history thus the surplus of oxygen and the lack of large predators allowed for the Arthur plura a mere invertebrates to reach lengths of over seven feet this makes the Arthur flora the largest bug for lack of a better term to have ever lived you'll be relieved to know that the Arthur pleura didn't eat meat it had a tiny mouth that took a plant matter so although the Arthur pleura posed no threat to anything more intelligent than a flower it would have ended our lives in another way from pure shock alone plesiosaur don't be fooled by the dinosaur lake named plesiosaur wasn't a dinosaur it may have looked like a dinosaur and lived a long dinosaurs but it actually belonged to a separate order of marine reptiles plesiosaur was however the quintessential sea monster with a stout body long neck pointed head and a plethora of sharp teeth plesiosaur inspired fear and beasts of land and sea it's also inspired fear in modern humans 66 million years after its extinction this is because plesiosaur is the model for good old Nessie's appearance and the appearance of most of the world's famed lake monsters of course people go further than this by claiming that a place or population survived into modern times and that creatures like the Loch Ness monster are actually living plesiosaurs unfortunately for these wishful thinkers plesiosaur was a cold blooded ocean living species that could not sustain a population in the small cold lock mess or in any lakes for that matter so plesiosaur is gone for good and we should all be so happy about this fact why would you want one of the scariest prehistoric creatures to coexist with humans that would just be another thing that we'd have to be afraid of Megatherium what's less threatening than a sloth it's one of the slowest moving animals on earth and it's arguably also one of the cutest they even support a permanent smile is that they're always in bliss unfortunately these qualities make them fast food for many modern-day predators nothing would have preyed on the sloth distant cousin however because it was aggressive weaponized and the size of an elephant the truth is as sloths have only recently been relegated to the joke book of animal species for much of the last million or so years they were giant terrifying creatures that roamed the earth rather than being slowpokes who sleep in trees megatherium was one of these giant sloths living from five million years ago to the end of the Ice Age this giant ground sloth was one of the largest land mammals on record it measured 20 feet long and weighed up to 4 tons maquette theorem also had claws measuring 12 inches long thankfully Megatherium was herbivorous but this fact was not known to early admirers one of these was Thomas Jefferson who upon learning of the discovery of ground sloth bones in his home state identified the creature as a meat-eater and even warned those who were planning to explore the west side of the USA about his potential existence over their titanoboa titanoboa is a new addition to the pantheon of creatures we're glad or extinct in 2009 hundreds of prehistoric snake fossils were found in the Colombian mine upon examination the snakes were found to be individuals from the same species a species then unknown to science more importantly one of the individuals was measured at 42 feet long making it the longest snake ever discovered the new species was named titanoboa meaning as you can probably discern titanic boa further investigation revealed that titanoboa who lived 62 58 million years ago in the period that succeeded the Cretaceous extinction event thanks to the absence of dinosaurs titanoboa was an apex predator and probably fit on the giant turtles and crocodiles that also ruled the post dinosaur period whoever recent research suggests that FISA predominantly unfished but these aren't the fish were thinking of they would have also been monsters moreover with its length and build titanoboa would have waited 2,500 pounds this means that it would dwarf the largest snakes in existence most modern species don't exceed 20 feet or 400 pounds why was everything so much bigger a bajillion years ago sarcosuchus the largest think in history preyed on some of the largest crocodilians in history but titanoboa would have been no match against this guy sarcosuchus was a species of early crocodile that lived 112 million years ago and made many dinosaurs look at tiny fossils indicated this crocodilian could be 39 feet long which nearly doubles the length of the largest modern crocodiles additionally sarcosuchus would have weighed around 8 tonnes the diet of such a monster croc is disputed but is believed to have included a mixture of aquatic and terrestrial animals and yes this would have probably included dinosaurs the long snout of sarcosuchus suggest that it was a specialized fish hunter similar to the goryeo which is an extinct species of Indian crocodilian with the famously thin nose those charkha suckers was frightening outsize alone at least it was probably slow-moving this is not the case with other prehistoric crocodiles paleontologists have recently discovered that there were several species of crocodiles with long formidable limbs that could propel them to land speeds unnatural for the robustness this meant that they were galloping crocodiles once upon a time and we thought the pre streak was done surprising us quit so pointless contrary to popular belief pterodactyls aren't dinosaurs they're pterosaurs in order of flying reptiles that are more related to birds than dinosaurs Quetzalcoatlus was a pterosaur but not just any terrorist or it was the most intimidating pterosaur and we all know that's a tall order to fill Quetzalcoatlus lived in the late cretaceous period and perished with the last of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago until then this pterosaur ruled the skies as the largest flying animal in an era of flying giants upon discovery Quetzalcoatlus his wingspan was estimated to be over 50 feet wide this was amended over the years hey the newest of it is now 36 feet across we know the difference doesn't mean much to you or much to fleeing animals when Quetzalcoatl is was bearing down on them the beak itself was eight feet which is used to spear prey just as large as humans but size and behavior weren't all that was intimidating about the Quetzalcoatlus it owned a pointed criminal crest that let everyone know who the real king of the Cretaceous was the t-rex it must have been shaking in its boots at the thought of seeing one of these guys around Gigantopithecus tales of giant humanoids have abounded for millennia giants are a fixture of fantasy and historical or as everything from the Bible to Harry Potter it employed the mythological creatures however you may be surprised to know that Giants aren't fictional and unlike the Loch Ness monster their existence is backed up by science from 9 million to 100,000 years ago a species of primate lived in Asia that grew up to ten feet tall and weighed up to 1300 pounds this species is called Gigantopithecus and is thought to have resembled either a gorilla or an orangutan of course one that was inflated scientists uncertain date doesn't end of this creatures appearance only a small number of the Apes fossils had been uncovered so details about its lifestyle and diet are ambiguous in fact even its size is in question with some scientists believing Gigantopithecus measurements to be greatly exaggerated greatly exaggerated or not Gigantopithecus would and did dwarf humans because unlike most of the creatures in this video Gigantopithecus existed alongside homo sapiens we wonder if there were any conflicts even though we don't really want to think of our ancestors faked Megalodon sharks rank near the top of the list of most commonly held phobias and even if you're not scared of sharks in absentia you become a shark afoot when you enter the ocean maybe it doesn't happen every time you swim or maybe it's just for a second but that unsettling feeling will come to the surface of your mind just like jaws did to attack swimmers the scariest shark to modern humans is the great white in imposing species that can exceed 220 feet and 4,000 pounds but what our ancestors had to fear in the water was three times the length and 20 times the weight mickeleh done lived from 23 to 2.6 million years ago and is the largest shark species in the fossil record resembling a robust great white Megalodon was the apex predator of the world's oceans Pring and whales and other marine giants Megalodon has been paid much media attention in recent years which has expanded its mythos considerably though the media has taken more than a few liberties regarding the Sharks appearance and behavior the fossils don't lie Megalodon was bigger and badder than most dinosaurs and its occupancy of the deep dark ocean makes it so much more terrifying Pullman of Scorpius Pula no Scorpius was needed because anyone who viewed it developed a pulmonary embolism we're just kidding but the fact that you believed us speaks volumes pull enough Scorpius was a scorpion that grew to nearly three feet long and just like with other carbon Affairs creatures entertain such sizes thanks to the abundance of oxygen in the atmosphere giant bugs dominated this era yet they paled in comparison to the scorpion on steroids Pullman of Scorpius was first described by science in 1994 after several fossils were found in Scotland besides its size and genealogy and the fact that it was terrestrial as opposed to aquatic scientists haven't determined much about the Pullman au Scorpius it's lifestyle is mostly a mystery it's assumed that Pullman of Scorpius preyed on smaller invertebrates and amphibians and would have immobilized into prey with its stinger just as its contemporaries do it's also theorized that the stinger would have packed a heck of a venomous punch and it could have been deadly to many animals we wonder how humans would have fared in a world full of Pullman Oh Scorpius imagine finding one of those in your shoes scratch that it wouldn't a fit you would have been much more likely to find a shoe in your scorpion terror bird a name like terror bird doesn't leave much to the imagination this creature a flightless bird larger than an ostrich was a terrifying specimen in size appearance and behaviour standing nearly 10 feet tall and weighing up to half a tonne terror birds were the baddest predators on the South American Plains during the Cenozoic era the emerged just after the dinosaurs went extinct and they evolved to dominate all mammals and reptiles thanks to the top-of-the-line equipment the natural selection had endowed them with Tera birds had powerful lakes for sprinting a giant peak for breaking bones and tearing apart flesh and clawed wings for grasping its prey tarah birds comprised many different species as this was an era in which terrestrial flightless birds were not laughingstocks but rather the most formidable hunters on earth terror birds range for over 60 million years before going extinct approximately 1.8 million years ago this wasn't pre humans began to emerge this may have been the luckiest mess in the history of our species that's all for 10 terrifying prehistoric creatures that weren't dinosaurs do you know if any other non dinosaurs that fit the bill let us know in the comments below thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe
