and fiercest enemy has dogged him for almost a century by now whether in the form of the jack of all trades mad scientist unafraid to get his hands dirty or the diabolical businessman the 80s made famous lex luthor has many forms but his egotistical vitriolic hatred towards superman has always endured and yet there are many moments where lex shows just what good he could do if he actually sucked it up and put his back into saving the day whether it's taking out super villains when the rest of the heroes fail to do so to steps in his years spanning long games that actually have a shocking amount of upsides to them lex luthor has pulled several moments of genuine heroics out of his pants often when the reader least suspects it so let's take a look at them today as arm jewels this is whatculture.com and these are the 10 most heroic things lex luthor has ever done number 10 killing mazars forever evil justice league forever evil was a major storyline event for the year it came out to summarize a very long and complicated event this story saw the league do battle against one of their most classic adversaries the crime syndicate of earth 3. now you would think that lex would be on the side of the crime syndicate but if anyone is going to take over this ball of dirt and water spinning through the cosmos it's gonna be him lex's part in the story culminates with him taking down the evil version of shazam masus who turns out to actually be alexander luther now this luther has already gone through death storm and bizarro superman by this point so you would think that luther would have a hard time taking him down in this battle however the good luther takes advantage of a loophole in the shazam magic to eke out a win realizing that they have the exact same voice luther calls out the magic word to deactivate his powers just long enough for lex to land the finishing blow 9. he helped defeat general zod superman last sun superman last sun is definitely one of the more underrated superman tales a story that tugs at your heartstrings in a way that most people scoff at the idea of a superman comic being able to achieve in this story superman and lois adopt a young boy as their son who of course turns out to actually be the son of general zod who uses him to come to earth to take over by throwing superman into the phantom zone uh oh in situations like this the only hope is of course lex luthor because i guess all of the other heroes were out that weekend i mean no one interrupts batman when he's in vacay mode that would just be suicide anyway lex luthor gathers a small team of other super villains and fights back against zod even convincing superman to cooperate with him when he finally returns to earth of course this moment is so far down the list because obviously lex had some kind of evil scheme brewing but the fact that he held the line against zod when there's literally a laundry list of other people to step up to the plate speaks volumes number eight rebuilt gotham batman no man's land i wish i could say that no man's land seemed unrealistic as a concept but frankly i'm just waiting for the chance to search american government forcibly secedes major american city after a cataclysmic earthquake off my 2020 bingo card yes jumping off from the event comic cataclysm gotham is left in complete ruins with the us government soon making things somehow worse by declaring it no man's land and leaving the population behind at the mercy of supervillains only batman oracle commissioner gordon and newcomer cassandra kane can maintain order but how do you get out of a situation like this well you have to have someone on the outside with the means of twisting government arms until they do what you want of course enter lex luthor using his money and resources lex is able to rebuild the city from the ground up and eventually get gotham reinstated as an american city once again of course this was all a plan to endear himself to the public while he planned his entry into politics but that doesn't necessarily negate the good he did for gotham number seven made america into a utopia superman red sun superman red sun is a shiny example of how despite mark miller's many many many faults he has a pretty damn good batting average when it comes to superman and one of his most fascinating tales was superman red sun in this story about a reimagined communist superman and lex luthor as the president of the united states we see luther being his usual ultra-egotistical self while slowly climbing the ranks of government while still unquestionably a huge dick lex still manages to do a lot of good for the old us of a for one thing he eliminates all diseases he also makes humans no longer have to sleep he creates a booming economy without stepping on too many folks and generally does way more good than harm than you would expect out of lex i mean sure it's still easy not to like the guy throughout the story due to how much of an egocentric jackass he still is but the results speak for themselves not to mention the twist at the end where his family is revealed to be the ones who gave birth to superman in the far far future number six he broke the anti-life equation final crisis final crisis is by far one of the weirdest and most offbeat things that grant morrison has ever written for the mainstream comic industry and that if you know anything about the man you know that that threshold is pretty vast but look through the awkward same voice dialogue odd story beats and strange interpretations of certain characters and you have easily one of lex luthor's most badass moments when it's revealed that the secret society's newest benefactor libra was really just paving the way for a conquest by darkseid who has at last found the anti-life equation and uses it for horrifying results on the people of earth lex begins working in secret to undermine his efforts while the other villains are under the equation's control lex and dr savannah work across the story to find some way to undo the damage not only do they succeed in breaking the anti-life equation but lex even personally takes libra off the board permanently and you would think that there would be some type of long game play here for his own power but nope at that point lex just wanted libra to go down number five sacrificed himself fighting superman injustice god's among us injustice gods among us is all about taking one of the more cliched story ideas for dc you know that being an evil justice league and taking it far further than any had before the world of injustice is one of the most fleshed out alternate earths in the dcu and one of the key differences between it and our own reality is that here lex luthor was actually a straight up good guy and one of clark's most trusted friends at first he tries to help superman's mission be gentler in its approach but by the time that the game's story picks up from the comics he's long since realized that his best friend is too far gone so he suits up and calls him out in front of the hall of justice for one final battle lex pulls out every trick imaginable to try and beat superman but of course no matter what universe he's in lex is never going to be a match for the man of steel and is swiftly killed by the super-powered tyrant but hey at least lex went down fighting for something genuinely good for once number four defeated the justice lords justice league one of the all-time greatest animated shows ever made is justice league and one of their best episodes is a better world which like injustice plays with the idea of the league going bad while it doesn't go into quite as much detail as netherrealm did with their interpretation of this story it gives you more than enough to be utterly hooked the justice lords having completely crushed their own world under their heel decide to go to our earth to air quote save it from what they see as a weak and efficient justice league the league tries to fight them on their own but of course fighting your mirror duplicate and people who have worked closely with said mirror duplicate for years thus knowing everything about them makes navigating a fight with them rather hard without a wild card fortunately superman found one taking a huge gamble that would end up biting him in the ass later but that is another story he requisitioned lex luthor's help for defeating the justice lords in exchange for a full pardon number three cured the amazo virus justice league number 39 the super villain amazo has taken a wide variety of different forms over the years but one of his most unique iterations was that of the amazo virus in the pages of justice league after the events of forever evil lex was officially made a member of the justice league which definitely served them well when the amazo virus which gives whoever is in fact dangerously powerful superpowers start sweeping the planet with no signs of stopping things are made more difficult when lex confesses to being the one who created the virus originally as a way of battling superman before it got completely out of control and mutated beyond his initial capacity to eliminate it after calming down the rightly pissed off superman lex puts two and two together and realizes that since it was made to battle superman's dna it might work the same way backwards so using some of superman's blood lex manages to find a cure sure it was him cleaning up a mess that he had already made but at least he legitimately wanted to help clean it up instead of being some scheme or something else entirely number two he helped fight doomsday action comics number 957 dc rebirth's action comics got off to a really good start throwing a lot of stuff at the reader in one issue without it actually feeling overwhelming and one of the things that we learned right off the bat is that in the wake of the new 52 superman dying in a previous event comic lex luthor has built himself a superman-esque suit and taken up the mantle in his place obviously when our new superman shows up he is none too happy about his sworn enemy infringing on his copyright so he heads over to confront him and then doomsday suddenly shows up to interrupt things out of nowhere superman and lex deciding that one of the most powerful dc villains just popping up in downtown metropolis takes precedence over their squabbling team up to take him down of course lex doesn't last that long compared to superman but luckily his suit still works enough so that he can evacuate civilians from the epic battle taking place and number one defeating darkseid justice league unlimited justice league unlimited was basically the team behind the original show taking everything that worked about the first two seasons finally ironing out all the kinks and making what worked even better and nowhere was that more apparent than in the truly epic series finale where darkseid with the armies of apocalypse under his control once more descends upon earth to exact his vengeance on superman lex and the remaining super villains team up with the league but in the end it all comes down to superman lex and batman squaring off with the monstrous new god despite superman finally going all out with his powers to put darkseid in the ground lex realizes that they're going to need something a bit more powerful to take him down this is where he finds new god metron and demands that he show him a way to defeat darkseid metron agrees taking him to the source wall when we see lex returning to the fight only to offer darkseid the anti-life equation the thing that he'd been searching for his entire eternal life it seems completely odd but when he takes it the two of them are enveloped in a cataclysmic explosion that seems to kill them both the show basically confirms that there is no way that they're gone for good but regardless this is without question the most heroic thing that lex
