we're gonna empower our superstars and empower all of you and more importantly we're gonna give you what you want it's well established that wwe controls the narrative of how fans perceive their product they often do this by outright lying to the audience members in numerous ways from fake attendance figures to fake marketing ploys to get a fan to spend their hard earned money now these are just some of the ways that wwe lie and manipulate their audience into throwing money at the wwe product but what else do they do well join us now's wrestlemia looks at the 10 biggest lies that wwe told its fans be sure to subscribe and hit that notification bell for daily wrestling videos and follow us on facebook for exclusive lists [Music] number 1 the wrestlemania 7 bomb scare vince mcmahon is prone to not admitting his mistakes and often blaming someone else entirely for the mistaken question brett screwed brett this was seen at wrestlemania 7 when instead of admitting that he got it wrong vince decided to make up the most outlandish insensitive lie possible now for some context in 1991 wwe originally booked the la memorial coliseum for wrestlemania 7. now this venue could pack in over 100 000 people however when ticket sales were going poorly vince switched to a much much smaller venue than being at the la sports arena right across the road now vince assumed that a hogan vs slaughter main event would sell out the colosseum however due to poor sales vince decided to pretend that the move was down to a bomb threat this threat was due to sergeant slaughter's pro-iraqi gimmick at the time the incident is believed to be a total fabrication and there was no danger of the original venue being bombed or any violence being planned whatsoever now the poor ticket sales not only affected wrestlemania 7's venue but it also impacted who was going to be there nbc sports announcer and late night talk host bob costas withdrew from the event and also comedian roseanne barr was sure that their pulled out appearances didn't in fact harm ticket sales number two andre the giant now it's common knowledge that the wwe often fabricates facts in relation to certain wrestlers height and weight this is a basic marketing trick to make the audience perceive that the wrestler in question is larger than life one of the legendary wrestlers that wwe did this with was andre the giant andre would be billed at seven foot four inches when in reality he was under seven foot this wasn't the only lie that wwe told his audiences about andre over the years they also had a habit of marketing hulk hogan body slamming andre at wrestlemania 3 as one of the most special moments in wwe history whilst this is indeed a great moment it wasn't the first time that andre was body slammed in wwe it actually happened multiple times prior and wwe chose to ignore this as it didn't fit the narrative or kept the moment in question special number three wwe attendance records how often do you hear a wwe broadcast start with michael cole stating we're sold out here tonight and then you see a section of the arena completely empty this is a marketing trick to make the show seem like a hot ticket commodity when in reality wwe actually struggled to sell tickets for the event this doesn't just happen on raw or smackdown but wwe is famous for outright lying about attendance at wrestlemania events so they can break attendance records for the particular stadium or arena for instance wrestlemania 3 which wwe claimed there were 93 000 plus fans in attendance when in reality it was debated if the silverdome could even fit that many people in the observer's dave meltzer has gone on to record to say that he believes the figure is an outright fabrication even silverdome promoter zane breslov revealed that the actual figure was closer to 78 000 a fast forward to 2016 and they once again claimed that wrestlemania 32 had broken a new attendance record for the atnt stadium they officially claimed that there were 101 000 people in attendance however meltzer again claims this was a complete lie and in reality there was around 93 000 fans in attendance for the event which is still an incredible number but not the number that wwe claimed number four wwe's weapons now one of the biggest misconceptions in relation to wwe and wrestling as a whole is that all weapons are real in reality this couldn't be further from the truth for instance tables are just a thin board of chipboard and are completely safe for a wrestler to fall through the kendo sticks are made from hollow wood which is designed to break apart with ease which makes it relatively safe [Applause] our solid steel steps are actually hollow meaning that they're actually rather light and make a dramatic sound whenever someone gets thrown into them i've never seen anything like that in my life and ladders well they're made from aluminium which is a lot safer than the solid steel that wwe tells the fans that the ladder is made from number five wwe don't reinforce the ring that was common practice for wwe announcers to mention that the ring was reinforced whenever multiple men would be wrestling this line on commentary would be used for when heavier wrestlers were wrestling for instance when braun strowman and the big show were wrestling on roy in 2017 cole would mention that the ring was reinforced meaning that the ring couldn't possibly collapse now in reality the rings are never reinforced and the only time that they're ever tweaked is when there is a spot planned in the match where the ring is going to break as seen in matches such as brock lesnar versus the big show [Applause] number six wwe killed wcw when wwe purchased wcw in 2001 it became common practice for wwe to claim that they actually killed wcw and in turn killed off their biggest competition in reality it was much more complex and it had very little to do with wwe although wcw was indeed struggling between 2000 and 2001 they did have a healthy roster of young and upcoming talent that would have sustained the company's growth and kept the product fresh the issue was that despite wcw nitro and thunder pulling in better ratings than the majority of shows on tnt and tbs one of the ceos of turner broadcasting that being jamie kellner decided that pro wrestling had no future on any of the channels therefore he cancelled all wcw programming with the media effect now without a television contract wcw was worth very little which meant that vince mcmahon was able to purchase the company and their tape library for a rumored price tag of only around 2.5 million dollars number seven the royal rumble winner main events wrestlemania one of the biggest marketing tricks wwe uses to promote the royal rumble is on the winner main events wrestlemania now the first rumble to incorporate this idea was 93 and to the wwe's credit they did stick to this idea for the first few years but it wasn't long before the winner of the royal rumble wasn't actually closing out wrestlemania every year for some context in 95 97 99 2006 2007 2008 10 11 12 and 17. all featured the royal rumble match winner failing to main event the show of the year now the main event should always be the final match on the card so this doesn't actually always happen now in recent years wwe has slightly altered the marketing of the match instead of promoting the winner of the match and stating that they are going to main event wrestlemania they now opt for the marketing ploy of the winner of the royal rumble match will be in one of the main events of wrestlemania number eight once in a lifetime wrestlemania 28 was the most successful pro wrestling event of all time having attained a buy rate of 1.2 million and having a live event gross of 9 million dollars wrestlemania 28 certainly piqued the interest of not just wrestling fans but fans of the world of movies and entertainment now the main reason it was so successful was because of the matchup between cena and the rock this was one of the biggest matches ever and to market the match they label the match as once in a lifetime this meant that the match would only happen once and the two men would only wrestle on that one specific occasion thus making it a must-see spectacle unfortunately a year later wwe decided to do a rematch between the two completely lying to the audience the rematch solely served so cena could get his win back and the rock could endure cena as the face of the company this despite him already being in that position for the past seven years fans felt cheated and rightly so this meant that the rematch between the two at wrestlemania 29 drew over 200 000 less pay-per-view buys than the year prior we wonder why number nine all wwe shows are live and the crowd noise is authentic now if you watched the tape wwe show for instance smackdown between 1999 and 2016 you'll notice that they present the show as if it's live and happening before our eyes now this is a complete lie and the reality of the matter is that it was taped days prior the majority of wwe programming these days is live with the exception of shows like main event which is usually taped prior to raw on a monday night additionally wwe will often edit crowd reactions on taped shows this started in 1999 and despite the crowd being incredibly hot they still manipulated crowd noise so certain stars will get a bigger reaction than they actually got this continued over the next 17 years and they would continue to add in fake crowd noises for smackdown every single week until they transitioned into a live broadcast in 2016. it was famously known as the hairdryer pop always sounded the same and number 10 wwe listen to their fans we're certainly doing our best to listen to our audience and give them what they want i think we always need to be listening we always need to be trying this is a direct quote from stephanie mcmahon back in 2019 and this statement couldn't be further from the truth in reality wwe will book whatever they feel is correct at the time and fan support is little in the way of impacting their booking for instance although fan reaction to roman reigns as a top guy in 2015 was extremely negative they continued on failing to adapt to the crowd backlash this also reflects on those that the crowd wanted to see certain wrestlers pushed zack ryder rusev and bad news barrett are great examples of those talents that the crowd wanted to see in a bigger spotlight but wwe completely failed to present them in the correct manner when they listened to the fans for instance when daniel bryan was added into the main event of wrestlemania 30 it is usually down to external factors outside of wwe's control in this instance the wwe departure of cm punk but there you have it guys 10 of the biggest lies wwe told its fans are there any more lies that they told us let us know in the comments down below subscribe if you haven't already follow us on
