flying your drone for the first time can be incredibly exciting but there's the potential for you to make a mistake that could really ruin your day it could really ruin your time out flying but luckily these little mistakes you could possibly make are easily avoidable and in this video i'm going to talk about 10 mistakes that you can make as a beginner and explain what they are how they happen how you can avoid them and you don't want to stick around to the end of the video because the last one was a mistake i made as a beginner flyer and it was really pretty embarrassing so that may save you the embarrassment let's jump in and let's take a look at 10 of the biggest possible mistakes you can make as a beginner drone flyer so before i jump in and go over the 10 biggest mistakes the new pilots can make i just want to say if you're new around here and you haven't subscribed and love drone related content please make sure to subscribe and please make sure that notification bells on so you don't miss any of my upcoming drawing videos and lastly if you learn something new please make sure to hit that like button it's greatly appreciated so what are the 10 possible mistakes you can make as a beginner drone flyer the first and i've made this mistake and it's actually really easy to make is not knowing the drone law so i actually made this mistake earlier in the year when i bought an air 2s i hadn't flown drones for a little while and i presumed the drone law hadn't changed in the uk but after i received the r2s i actually learned that the drone law had been updated in the uk and it actually meant that the areas in which you could fly the rts especially without an a2 cfc certificate which is basically a a little course you can do followed by a supervised exam which allows you to fly within certain categories of your drone so you can fly in more unrestricted categories but i learned that without doing that the r2s really was quite restricted in the uk so i actually went with many too and i haven't looked back since it's been great but my point is it's very easy to not understand the drone law and so that could lead to two things firstly you could get your drone as a present or you could buy it to yourself and after you get it you could realize oh i've got the latest greatest drone but actually i can't really fly anywhere and that could really just happen your fan or you could get your drone immediately go out flying no really know the drone law and basically get caught doing something that you shouldn't you know flying in an area like a public area too close to people even though you feel like it seems safe legally you're not allowed to and that could just lead to a whole load of aggro yes you may not get in extreme trouble for it but you might actually peeve off some people and get into a bit of a confrontation and you don't really want that as a drone flyer especially for me and the reason i stick with the mini two is i just want to go out and fly for fun and the least laws that i have to think about when i'm out flying the bear because i just want to go out and fly for fun so make sure as a new pilot you know the drone law in your country the second is make sure your software and firmware is updated and this is important for two reasons the first is dji is constantly bringing out updates for example dji have just improved the fpv mode for the dji mini 2. i have a video coming in that soon and they and they're constantly tweaking and changing things to make the flying experience better so you want to make sure that you have the latest software on your phone in terms of the app it's the most up-to-date version and that you have the latest firmware installed on your drone so you're getting the benefits of them updates but secondly dji are constantly fixing bugs so what's really common is if you don't buy your drone direct from dji you buy in a local store for example what's really common is when you get that drone you have quite a lot of firmware updates today and the reason for that is quite simple if you buy it direct from dji it's most likely been updated in the past couple of weeks before it's got sent out to you because it's just been manufactured if you buy it from somewhere in a store it's potentially been set in for a couple of months at least and so it has at least a few months old firmware on it so when you get it it will update to the most recent firmware so yes if you're only like one or two firmware versions i you're really lagging that much but like i said if you buy it from a store where it's been set in you could be quite a bit off the most recent version and all of them bugs and glitches will have been fixed and for the best flying experience you just want to make sure your drone is completely up to date so make sure software and firmware is up to date to prevent any issues the next mistake that you potentially might make is losing a propeller so quite a lot of the dji range uses quick release propellers or if you fly dji mini 2 you'll know they're actually screwed on now when you get a quick release drawn you're going to be putting them propellers on yourself for the first time so you need to make sure that they are fully secured before you go flying if you're someone who takes them on and off for transport this is even more important because you're taking them on and off more often than someone who's always having them on and that just gives her more opportunity for a chance for you to put it on wrong so you must make sure whenever you put a quick release propeller on so you push it down and twist it in that it's fully secured and that it will not pop off it must be fully locked into place even if it's just a little bit out you could potentially open yourself up to a problem off it coming off or affecting the flight when it comes to dji mini 2 and the screen propellers that have little screws you must make sure that them screws are fully secure you don't want any chance of them working less and you don't want it to affect your flight in any way losing a propeller during your flight would be catastrophic so it doesn't happen often but you want to make sure that your propellers are fully secured the next big mistake that a lot of beginner flyers make is flying out of sight legally in the uk you're not allowed to fly out of sight you have to fly within line of sight but a lot of pilots especially beginner pilots push them boundaries a little of what they what they feel is okay for line of sight if you are in a build up area or a mountainous countryside or you're flying over clefts it can be very easy sometimes to lose sight of your drone by accident or on purpose so if you're flying off over a cliff you might think oh it's totally okay i can't see it anymore because it's gone down over the other side of the clef it'll be totally fine and you really are opening yourself up to problems especially as a beginner flyer augustine on dgi is fantastic now and dropbites aren't all that common i remember back when i used to fly the original mavic air which was the wi-fi only connection you could lose video signal within 100 meters or even less if there was big objects trees or interference and that would open yourself up to this this scenario where you were flying your drone with the sticks but you no longer could see what the drone could see on the screen and so in those scenarios it was really important to be able to look up and say okay but my drone's there and fly it back while looking at the drone if you get yourself in this position with uh the latest drones for example the dji mini 2 and i have lost video signal with the dji mini 2 even with augie sync then it's super important that you can see your drone so you can fly it back and if you have your drone over the edge of the cliff behind the building behind the forest it's going to be really really really hard if not impossible for you to be able to fly that drone back in these scenarios luckily return to home will kick in and should save you in these scenarios but just remember as mentioned it is a legal requirement in most countries especially the uk to fly line of sight so you must always be able to see your drone the next is flying backwards this may sound really obvious but the number one reason i say for crashing a drone is flying backwards so why does this happen well a lot of the really common drone moves that people make involve flying backwards so you're flying backwards from the point of interest you're flying backwards from yourself so you can you know zoom out get that droney shot up in the air of you it's just a good perspective and a good move so you find yourself quite a lot of the time flying your drone backwards but as you know the camera in the drone points forwards and if you're flying a drone with no obstacle avoidance for example the dji mini 2 has no backward facing obstacle avoidance sensors you really need to be careful because if you're flying backwards if you're looking at the screen there's a real chance that you could back up into something you could fly back into a tree you could fly back into a forest you could fly back into the building because you can't see behind the drone and because you're trying to get that perfect shot on the screen you could bag your drone up into something and that could be potentially a catastrophic event for your drone so i'm not saying don't fly backwards but wrecking the area know that you've got a big open area behind where you're flying backwards know that there's nothing for you to be able to hit and just be careful when you're flying backwards not knowing your stopping distance can be potentially fatal for your drone one of the things i really recommend you do when you first get your drone is going to an open area football field somewhere empty and really practice flying your drone and as you do get used to how quickly you can stop that drone but also just how quickly it stops normally so let go of the sticks and your drone will return to hover when you let go of the sticks but just memorize you know make up memory how quickly that drone comes to a stop you can stop much quicker by pulling back on the sticks and that will make your drone pull back and stop quicker and again practice s memorize it and know just how quickly you can get your drone to stop this is going to save you potential heart egg in the long run because you don't want to get into a scenario where you're filming a subject you're flying towards a friend you're flying towards a point of interest and you forget or you haven't memorized how quickly your drone can stop and you just presume it will stop instantly and you haven't given yourself enough of a slow down area and you smack your drone into something that's definitely not what you want so when you're flying around getting them shots it needs to be second nature to just know how quickly you can stop your drone so you don't over your target you don't over into whatever you're filming it's super important that you don't make that mistake because if your drone hits something something as delicate as the money too usually doesn't fare too well next you need to be careful of power lines and telephone cables i've actually nearly got caught out with this before i was doing a a shot of my car where i was coming down towards the car and what i didn't realize was i just went past a telephone cable and i missed it by not that much and that could have been potentially not a good scenario to be in i was lucky in that case and from then on i've always made it a priority to make sure that there's no potential power lines or cables i could hit the problem is when you're flying your drone on your small iphone screen it can be really really hard to see fine power lines and telephone cables although in real life they're quite obvious where they are when you're flying around especially in sports mode or faster spades it's very very hard to see them telephone cables and power lines on your phone sometimes it can look as if they're almost completely invisible sometimes a bright bright sky can just feed them out completely and you could get yourself into a scenario where you could fly your drone strand up power line or cable now this probably won't ruin your drone but your drone could get stuck on them power lines or cables and that's just an awkward position to be in especially as a first-time flyer so what i recommend is you stay super vigilant when you're flying always make sure you're scanning the screen for power lines and cables but like i say they do sometimes not show very well so you just need to rekey the area this is probably generally good advice all round but wherever you're flying not like the bag your hand know where there's telephone cables power cables among other obstacles and that way you'll just make sure you're never in that position to hit them the next is do not get caught out by the wind something like the dji mini 2 has fantastic wind resistance but it is not a superhero drone it has its limit and when the fluctuates wind changes and when can change even with altitude so you could be somewhere that seems really calm no wind at all and you could fly up to 120 meters and the wind could be insane i've been in multiple locations where i'm flying my drone fine no warnings go up to 120 meters and i start getting wind warnings and when i try to come back i find that i'm now flying into a headwind you could potentially go somewhere send your drone somewhere in a tailwind fly up and get a really strong headwind and struggle to get back now if that is the case you can always lower your drone down and that's fine but if you do a lot of flying over clefs for example you could really find these scenarios where you fly over the edge of a clef and all of a sudden you've got mega strong winds and all of a sudden it becomes an issue to get your drone back so a few taps when it comes that firstly like i say if you're experiencing strong wind at high altitude lower your drone usually the lower you go the lesser the wind speed and secondly there's a range of apps which give you wind forecasts for your area so just make sure you have a quick glance at the wind forecast for where you're flying and lastly just know how your drone flies in the wind know what to do when there's a strong wind like sport mode lower altitude and it will just make you far more comfortable when you're flying in the wind but try not to get in a scenario where you get caught by wind speeds is that can really make your drone struggle to return to home and when we're talking about returning to home one of the biggest mistakes new flyers make is not knowing how long it takes your drone to fly back a lot of people are very tempted when they get their drone to push the limits straight away and then try to fly back and then maybe with a little bit of wind a little bit of an experience you realize as they're coming back in sport mode this battery is draining really quick surprisingly really common scenario so one of the things you need to again build that memory off is how quickly you can get your drone back or just how how long it takes to get your drone back in a normal scenario so you'll push the boundaries bit by bet every time you go flying and that will help you build up that memory of how long it takes to run to get back so you can know when you're a certain distance away with a certain amount of battery that it's time to come home it's time to bring that drone back so you won't lose it and now is the embarrassing mistake i made as a new flyer as a new pilot it was really embarrassing when it happened and it was a bit painful because there was other people there and witnessed to happen and that was make sure you update your return to home when you've moved so let me give you the scenario of how this happened to me i was on a private road with other people and i was using the active tracking feature of the original dji air to do a recording of my car now this private road was single track you could not turn the car you could not reverse it really was that narrow because like i say private road and so i did was i took my drone off from where my car was i got in my car i set active track to the car and i took off slowly the signal the video signal cut out for the drone and in a few seconds later i got a warning saying that the drone was returning to home and the drone took off but i couldn't turn the car single lane i had to stop the car get out and sprint after my drone and this was one of the first few times i was finding the drone so i didn't i didn't know if i could trust to return to home and so i'm running down this road after my drone praying that it lands back where it was and it was just an embarrassing experience all round what you need to remember is if you're moving so if you're on a boat out of water if you're running and having your drone follow you if you're just hiking going a walk and your drone's following you you need to periodically update your return to home because you need to realize if you lose signal your drone will go back to its return to home location which could have been updated quite a while ago you know if you've been walking for 10 minutes you're quite a bit away from where your original return to home location was so periodically go into settings update your return to home location as you're flying so if you lose signal to your drone it will land back closer to you and don't make that embarrassing mistake i made so those are my 10 mistakes they're easily avoidable the beginner pilots make if you've learned something new please hit that like button and if you're new around here like drone related content please make sure to hit the subscribe button and please make sure notification bells on i appreciate you watching this video the whole way through i'll see you in the next one [Music] you
