[Music] well good morning students so happy to see you here at anchor 2020 during this class we are going to study one of the most difficult sections of the book of Revelation we're going to take a look at the seven trumpets now the class of course begins on Monday and it ends next Sabbath we study four hours a day and on Friday we have five hours so it's going to be very intensive but we're going to have a wonderful time together I'd like to mention that we have 40 students in our class and they come from 10 different states and 3 different countries we're so glad that you come to anchor this year now before we get into our study we want to take a look at the table of contents you have in your hands the study notes for this class there's close to 400 pages of material that we're going to take a look at in the course of this class there's also an additional material it's an article that appeared in ministry magazine for January 2012 an article written by Anand Manuel Rodriguez the title is issues in the interpretation of the seven trumpets of Revelation and basically in this article on Herman well presents nine views of the seven trumpets within the seventh-day Adventist Church we did not receive permission to include it in the manual on the study notes but you can read it we copied it off so that you would have a copy and would be able to read it so let's take a look at where we're going in this particular class the table of contents is on page two actually page one of your study notes so let's take a look at where we're going to go in this class you'll notice first of all that we're going to deal with some introductory matters different views in the seventh-day Adventist Church and in the Christian world on the seven trumpets what principles do they use for interpreting the trumpets then you'll notice that we're going to take a look at the first trumpet and then the second trumpet the third trumpet the fourth trumpet the fifth trumpet and then you'll notice that under Chapter number six the fifth trumpet you have a chart that explains Revelation 12 through 22 I'm not sure that we're going to be able to cover the chart but it's there on page 146 you'll be able to take a look at it study it it's going to take you a while to negotiate the chart and then you'll notice in Chapter 7 we have an interlude in Revelation chapter 11 and that interlude covers two particular periods of history the first period in the interlude of revelation 11 deals with the 1260 years of papal dominance the 1260 years in which the papacy the little horn the Beast of Revelation chapter 13 ruled primarily over Europe and then the second event that we find in this interlude is a depiction or description of the French Revolution so Revelation chapter 11 is actually an interlude that actually amplifies the fourth trumpet and the fifth trumpet so remember that the interlude in revelation 11 is an amplification of the fourth trumpet which would be the 1260 years and the fifth trumpet which is a description of the French Revolution then you'll notice another chapter this is chapter 8 Matthew Luke and the times of the Gentiles this is a chapter that deals with the times of the Gentiles spoken of in revelation 11 and also in Matthew chapter 24 and Luke chapter 21 so we're going to take a look at that and then you notice from chapter 9 through chapter 12 we're going to deal with the Little Book of Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4 which is amplified in Revelation chapter 10 you'll notice the chapter 9 is titled the little sealed book we're going to see what the contents of the little sealed book of Daniel chapter 12 and verse 4 include then we're going to take a look at the mighty angels from heaven this is a study of the second interlude that we find after the fifth trumpet and this interlude deals with the little book that was opened in Revelation chapter 10 then we're going to take a look at what it means to measure the temple of God that is in Revelation chapter 11 and verse 1 which really belongs with chapter 10 and we'll be studying that particular point then we have Daniel 10 and a little book we probably are not going to be able to study this chapter because we don't have enough time to cover everything in the study notes but in Daniel chapter 10 in the little book I hope that you'll read that chapter it's about 20 pages long and it has a lot of very important material then you'll notice the next chapter that we're going to study is chapter 13 we're going to deal with the sixth trumpet it's going to take us quite a while to study the sixth trumpet there's a lot of material there and then we will study the seventh trumpet you'll notice also the from chapters 15 to 18 that there's some additional points you'll notice in chapter 15 the title is the marriage the marriage supper and possessing the kingdom we're going to take a look at wedding customs in Scripture and in antiquity and we're going to see that the marriage of Jesus is the same as Jesus taking over the kingdom and then you notice the next chapter deals with examining the subjects of the kingdom it has to do with the investigative judgment then you have matters relating to literary structure this is a detailed look at how revelation chapter 8 9 10 and 11 and 12 are organized and then you have chapter 18 views and issues in the study of the trumpets and you have there included the prophecy of Josiah which and also the seven trumpets in Adventism and then you have after that the content contact information so let's go now to page three and take a look at the schools of study on the trumpets there are four of them the preterist the Futurist the dual fulfilment view and the historicist view this is not only views of Adventists but also views of non-adventist the first view that you'll noticed here is the progress view and I'm just going to read from the manual the trumpets depict events relating to the Roman Empire and the Jewish nation in the first centuries of the Christian era thus the trumpets are simple history and therefore they are of historical interest but they have no relevance for the church today so basically the preterist view is that the trumpets were fulfilled in the ancient Roman Empire and they were fulfilled with the literal Jewish nation in the first years of the history of the Christian Church so if that's the case then there of interest for historical study but they have absolutely no relevance for the church today because they're already past they don't depict events that are going to take place in the future so let's take a look now at another view that is presented in the world today that is the futurist view which basically this is a view that teaches that the seven trumpets describe events that will afflict humanity after the rapture of the church now this is primarily of you outside the seventh-day Adventist Church I don't know anyone in the Adventist Church that teaches that the trumpets fall after the rapture of the church I don't know of any Adventists who believes in the secret rapture so basically these trumpets are describing events that are going to take place after the church is raptured to heaven terrible judgments that God is going to afflict humanity with which means that the seven trumpets have no real events for the church because the church is going to be gone so if the church is going to be gone in the rapture why should we even study the trumpets they don't have any relevance for us then we have another view which is the dual fulfillment view and you have some Adventists in in this camp basically this is the idea that the trumpets have a dual fulfillment yes you can apply historicism and say that it had a full that they had a fulfillment in the past but they will have another literal fulfillment in the future and some Adventists say that that the future fulfillment of the trumpets is going to take place before the close of probation other Adventists say that the seven trumpets take place after the close of probation in the future and then you have finally in on page four the view that I believe is the correct one the historic interpretation of the trumpets basically what this view teaches is that the introductory vision to the trumpets describes the starting and ending points of the entire series the starting point we're going to notice is the day of Pentecost when Jesus began his intercessory ministry at the golden altar in the holy place of the heavenly sanctuary upon his ascension then the series will end when Jesus throws down the censor and he ceases to intercede for Humanity and he takes over the kingdoms of the world so in other words the introductory vision has the starting point and the ending point of the seven trumpets it summarizes the two points and the trumpets are the events in between the introductory part which is the intercession of Jesus and when Jesus takes over the kingdoms of the world so for his tourists strict historicists the trumpets do not have two applications the trumpets have one application and apostolic times and ending when Jesus takes over the kingdoms of the world now let's go to the subtype title historicist principles of all of the passages in the book of Revelation the seven trumpets series is the most difficult to understand and I must make an admission that for years I shied away from teaching about the seven trumpets because I looked at the seven trumpets through the prism of urias myths interpretation of the trumpets and to be honest with you it made little sense to me in fact I will remember that many times I taught Revelation seminars the revelry the seminars unlimited Revelation seminar and it's lesson 23 and the title of lesson 23 is trumpets Harold Rome's collapse I always skip that lesson I went from less than 22 to less than 24 because it was so long and it just all of the interpretation of the symbolism just made absolutely no sense then a few years ago actually many years ago while I was serving as pastor of Fresno central church I decided that we would study in the book of Revelation in chronological order and of course that obligated me to sit down and study the trumpets because if you're gonna study Revelation you can't say okay we're going to skip the trumpets folks so I was forced to sit down and study for myself the seven trumpets applying the same principles that we apply to every other section of the book of Revelation and the study notes that you have are the result of my personal study of the text of Scripture not going to Uriah Smith or going to futurist authors or going to other individuals who have written about the trumpets but actually going to the book of Revelation itself with a good lexicon with a concordance and studying the trumpets for myself and I think that everything is going to make sense as we move along now we need to have certain interpretating principles in order to understand the trumpets as well as other sections of the book of first of all when the book of Revelation does not interpret a symbol we must go to other places in scripture to discover the correct interpretation of that symbol is that point clear secondly and this is probably the most important principle of all we must carefully consider the order of events or the literary structure of the book of Revelation the book of Revelation is an intricately woven document with flashbacks for tastes repetition and expansion we must remember that God did not reveal the book of Revelation in strict chronological order the visions of Revelation run in cycles just like the Book of Daniel has four cycles Daniel - Daniel 7 Daniel 8 and 9 and Daniel 10 through 11 in other words the book of Revelation you can't say well I want to know what's going to happen in the future so you start in Revelation 1 verse 1 you go to Revelation chapter 22 the last verses you say okay now I know the chronological sequence of events no the book of Revelation has a very tricky structure you know I can give you an example at the top of page 5 in your study notes there are three passages on 144,000 in the book of Revelation you have first of all in Revelation 7 1 through 8 the sealing of the 144,000 each section has a different emphasis so in Revelation 7 1 through 8 you have the sealing of 144,000 then you go to chapter 14 many chapters in between and you have the character of the 144,000 and then in chapter 15 verses 2 through 4 you have the victory of the 144,000 over the beast as a meze his mark and the number of his name now obviously this is not in chronological order you simply have three different passages that emphasize different aspects about 144,000 the third principle that we need to take a look at is the introductory scenes of each series contain the beginning and ending points of the entire series this is what I mentioned at the very beginning so in other words the introductory verses to eat to the series of the churches to the series of the seals to the series of the trumpets contains the starting point of the entire series and the ending point of the entire series I understand the point that I'm that I'm making you know I have here several points that that illustrate this principle in Revelation chapter 1 verses 1 through 7 you have the two points of time to the churches let's go there for a moment Revelation chapter 1 and verses 1 through 7 and you'll see that you have the beginning point and you also have the ending point Revelation chapter 1 and verse 1 actually let's go to verse 4 because of the brevity of the time it says in verse 4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia so would that be the beginning point he's writing to the seven churches in Asia but now notice verse seven and we can't look at all of the details in between verse seven says behold he is coming with clouds and every eye will see him even they who pierced him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him even so amen let me ask you is verse seven in chronological order - what we find before and after no because afterwards that goes back to speak about the churches so you have in this introductory part of the seven churches you have the beginning point which is John writing to the seven churches and the ending point Jesus coming in the clouds that point clear now let's notice also revelation 3 verse 21 this is the conclusion of the church churches series and the introduction to the seals Revelation chapter 3 and verse 21 to him who overcomes I will grant to sit with me on my throne that's future right Jesus says I will grant to sit with me on my throne as I also overcame and sat with my father on his throne and then you have after this the seven seals so what is the starting point for the seven seals when Jesus sits with his father what on his throne and his ascension where do the seals end when we sit with Jesus on the throne are you with me or not so the introductory verse gives you the beginning and the ending point the same is true with Revelation chapter 8 the series on the trumpets you have let's go there to Revelation chapter 8 the introduction to the series of the trumpets Revelation chapter 8 and let's notice beginning with verse 2 because verse 1 is the conclusion to the series of the seals it says that I saw seven angels who stand before God and to them were given seven trumpets then another angel having a golden censer came and stood at the altar he was given much incense that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne in the smoke of the incense with the prayers of the saints ascended before God from the Angels hand when did that work of mingling the incense with the prayers of God's people begin when did that process begin on the day of Pentecost when Jesus began his work of intercession in the Holy Place right but now notice there's a change in scene verse 5 in verse 5 it says then the angel took the censer filled it with fire from the altar we're gonna see where to come back this to this in Revelation chapter 14 from the altar and what does he do with the censer now no longer is he interceding with the censer what is he doing he throws it to the earth and there were noises thunderings lightnings and an earthquake that represents the end of intercession we will study that a little bit later on in this series when we deal with Ezekiel chapter 10 where it speaks about taking the censor and throwing it in Jerusalem that means saroo salim is now going to be punished and so are you understanding this point critically important to understand that the introductory vision gives you the beginning and start at the beginning and ending point of the series and then if you continue here on page five revelation 11 verses 15 through 19 contains the conclusion to the trumpets a summary of the rest of the book and the introduction to the next section you say now how is that well let's go to Revelation chapter 11 Revelation chapter 11 and let's read verses 15 through 17 this is the seventh angel who blows the seventh trumpet seventh trumpet then the seventh angel sounded and there were loud voices in heaven saying the kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign forever and ever and the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their Thrones fell on their faces and worshipped God saying we give you thanks O Lord God Almighty the one who is and who was and who is to come because you have taken your great power and reigned that's where the seventh trumpet ends no there's a series of the trumpets ends there at verse 17 now you say what about verse 18 some people make the mistake of thinking that revelation 11 is in chapter 11 verse 18 follows what is in the in the previous verse that's not the case what happens is revelation 18 now is going to give you the summary of the rest of the book you say how do you know that well let's read this interesting statement from Ellen White see the little lady understood this how did she understand all these little intricate details lucky guess right no she was inspired folks that's how she knows we're gonna see detail after detail in the trumpets where Ellen White is right on target in her interpretation let's read this statement that we find in the book early writings page 36 courtesy that this takes you back then I saw that Jesus would not leave the most holy place until every case was decided either for salvation or destruction and that the wrath of God would not come what is the wrath of God coming it's the seven plagues right that the wrath of God would not come until Jesus had what finished his work in the most holy place laid off his priestly attire and clothed himself with the garments of vengeance that's a close of probation isn't it then it says then Jesus will step out from between the father and man and God will keep silence no longer but pour out his wrath on those who have rejected his truth that is after the close of probation the pouring out of the seven last plagues but then notice what Ellen White says I saw that the anger of the nations the wrath of God and the time to judge the dead were what separate and distinct one following the other are you catching the picture also that Michael had not stood up and at the time of trouble such as never was had not yet commenced the nations are now getting angry let me ask you is that thinking is that taking place before or after the close of probation before isn't it now where do you find that expression nations getting angry in verse 18 right so she says the nations are now getting angry and by the way or it says the nations are getting angry she's not describing just the nations are angry at each other the nations are getting angry ultimately they'll be angry against God's people and by the way this phrase the nations are getting angry is described in Revelation chapter 12 through chapter 14 that's where the anger of the nations is described then she continues the nations are now getting angry but when her high priest has finished his work in the sanctuary he will stand up put the garments of vengeance and then the seven last plagues will be poured out so notice the summary of the five chronological states five chronological sections of revelation 11 verse 18 the nations are getting angry that is described in Revelation 12 through 14 there you find a description of the powers of the earth angry at God's people wanting to destroy God's people revelation 15 through 19 describes the close of probation in the seven last plagues that summarizes what phrase your wrath has come then it says the next event is the time to judge the Dead which did the righteous know who is judge after the plagues are poured out when Jesus comes this is describing the Millennium chapter 20 and then it says time to reward your Saints so when Jesus comes is he going to reward his Saints yes is he going to begin to judge the wicked yes and then you have the final which is to destroy those who destroy yours when are those going to be destroyed to destroy the earth after the Millenium are you with me so verse 18 gives you the introduction to the rest of the book and then revelation 11 verse 19 you are we're on page 6 revelation 11 19 is the introduction to the next section of Revelation 2 revelation 12 through 14 are you following me or not so so revelation 11 11 19 Ellen wait always applies that verse to the beginning of the work of Jesus in the most holy place in 1844 now wait a minute if you take revelation in chronological order then you would have to say that you know the the opening of the temple in heaven and the archivists Testament is seen you would have to say that's after the second coming of Jesus but what is revelation the 11:19 doing god is taking you back to the section that deals with the anger of the nations are you with me or not I hope I wish we had more time to to you know fine-tune all of this but you know that's why you have the study time in the afternoon go back reflect on it think on it on the basis of what we are talking about now let's go to our next section serious questions on hermeneutical consistency hermeneutical means principles of interpretation interpreters of the book of Revelation I found in my studies are frequently inconsistent in the way in which they interpret the book for example the historicist method teaches that the churches and the seals begin win in apostolic times Ephesus is the Apostolic Church right and in the seals we teach the white horse is the church that goes out conquering and to conquer the Apostolic Church so the series begins in apostolic times and ends when when Christ sets up his everlasting kingdom this being the case why does your iya Smith and other interpreters say that the trumpets begin in the fourth century with the barbarian invasions are you catching my point secondly some Adventist interpreters believe that there is a dual fulfillment of the trumpets one past and the other future however is there such a thing as dual fulfillments enchain prophecies are there to fulfillments to the churches no are there to fulfillments to the seals no other to fulfillments the Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 and Daniel 8 and 9 and Daniel 11 no enchain prophecies you have how many fulfillments you have one fulfillment in change chain prophecies another question were the barbarian invasions of such historical importance that you needed four trumpets to describe the barbarian invasions that's what your is myth does furthermore those who interpret the trumpets as a depiction of the barbarian invasions and the growth of Islam and Turkey are many times inconsistent in the manner in which they interpret the symbols sometimes they take the language literally and other times they apply the language symbolically there's an inconsistency in the method of interpreting the symbols finally at the top of page 7 for those who see the rise and fall of Islam and the role of Turkey in the trumpets one must ask where in other prophetic lines of prophecy do you find a mention of Turkey or the Muslims are they in Daniel 2 are the Muslims and Turkey and Daniel to know are they in Daniel 7 no are they in Daniel 8 and 9 no are they in this series on the churches no are they in the series on the seals no are they in Daniel 11 and 12 no are they in Revelation 12 no are they in Revelation 13 no so to insert the Muslims and Turkey into the trumpets simply as a reflection of a view that was held by Uriah Smith who introduced this view into the Adventist Church and by the way I'm not I'm not demeaning the work of Uriah Smith you can read his commentaries his commentaries on Daniel revelation are very good but he did not have all the light on the trumpets he did not have all the light particularly on the Battle of Armageddon he believed that you know the king of the north is Turkey and the drying up of the Euphrates was literal you saw he way he you know he was I think he was wrong as in an interpretation of Daniel 11 Revelation chapter 16 that doesn't mean that everything that he wrote is is not trustworthy Ellen White recommended that bet his books be read so I'm just mentioning that the the difficulties that we have with his particular interpretation of the trumpets now we're on page 7 introduction to the trumpets we begin by asking the very important question are we to understand the trumpets from a futurist or from historicist perspective seventh day evidence theology has traditionally interpreted the church's the seals and the trumpets from a historic perspective however in recent times there has been a tendency among some seventh-day Adventist interpreters to interpret the trumpets from a futurist perspective and probably the person who has popularized this the most is Marvin Moore who for many years I don't know if he still presently is but was editor of signs of the times as regard the trumpets as I was mentioning at the beginning this morning there are two futurist schools of thought in the seventh-day Adventist Church today one school sees the fulfillment of the trumpets in post probationary time that is after the close of probation the other school sees their fulfillment as future from our time but occurring during probationary time before the close of probation Marvin Moore belongs to this second group that believes that the trumpets will be fulfilled shortly before the close of probation I believe that the future is school commits to mistakes in their interpretation of the trumpets first they often literalized the symbolic language they speak about meteorites and you know falling from heaven literally and asteroids falling upon the earth you know but but when the Bible speaks about a falling star you know you need to see what the Bible interprets the falling star as not just think that it's a meteorite or an asteroid we have to let the Bible interpret its own symbols so first they often literalized the symbolic language and second they fail to do a serious study of the literary arrangement of the book of Revelation you see the literary structure of the book of Revelation is the skeleton that holds the whole book together and if you don't have a skeleton you have a jellyfish that moves here there and everywhere many scholars now here's an important point many scholars have concluded that the book of Revelation follows the sequential order of the Hebrew sanctuary in other words that structured around the Hebrew sanctuary in the series of the seven churches Jesus is walking where among the candlesticks in the series on the seals Jesus has moved to where to the table of the showbread now if you want to more on that you would have to study this series that I did under seals there's a two volume set of study notes on the seals in the series on the trumpets where is Jesus ministry we just read it a few moments ago at the altar of incense and in Revelation 11 19 Jesus moves where he moves to where the Ark of the Covenant is so you have this sequence from actually the book of Revelation begins in chapter 1 with the sacrifice of Christ with the death of Christ he redeemed us through his blood he he was dead and yet he's alive so it begins actually with his work on earth then you have the candlesticks then you have the table of showbread then you have the altar of incense then you have the opening of the most holy place and then you'll notice in the next paragraph then in chapter 15 verses 5 through 8 the sanctuary administration closes the temple is filled with smoke nobody can enter because the intercession of Christ has ended and then in Revelation 16 through 19 you have a description of the seven last plagues chapter 20 yeah the scapegoat ceremony and chapter 21 and 22 you have the new heavens and the new earth does revelation have a sanctuary structure it most certainly does it follows the order of the sanctuary so if you extract the trumpets and you put them in the future what happens the the sanctuary structure of the book is interrupted so you have to realize that the trumpets fit within a certain a time period which is that period are the intercession of Christ in the sanctuary is this point clear so extracting the trumpets from the legitimate context and inserting them into the future destroys the beautiful sanctuary symmetry of the book and if you want more on the sanctuary symmetry of the book you know if you have the book God cares by si Mervyn Maxwell my teacher in the seminary you'll find a beautiful description of the sanctuary symmetry of the book of Revelation now let's take a look at the normative seventh-day Adventist position on the trumpets there are certain non-negotiables when it comes to the seventh-day event its concept of the seven trumpets after desmond ford have you ever heard of him he died just a short while ago after Desmond Ford came up with his novel ideas and Bible prophecy the General Conference established a Daniel and revelation Study Committee it's known as dark come to look into his arguments the result was the publication of seven volumes on various issues relating to the sanctuary and Bible prophecy by the way I would recommend that you acquire this seven set series they're available from a biblical Research Institute of the General Conference they are a powerful powerful support for the seventh-day Adventist view of the sanctuary and Bible prophecy I mean if they answer every single objection that was raised by Desmond Ford and is raised generally by evangelicals regarding the seven trumpets continuing here in page eight regarding the seven trumpets dark ham gave the following explanation this is this is the official explanation that is given on the trumpets by this committee today seventh-day adventists virtually stand alone as a as exponents of the historicist method since non Catholic groups in general have abandoned this approach in favor of one of the two methods mentioned above which is preterism futurism the Daniel revelation committee wishes to reaffirm to the world Church the validity of the historicist approach to these two apocalyptic books the committee sees it as the only sound method to use so the Adventist Church is solidly expounding the view of historicism chic and it continues the committee sees it as the only sound method to use our pioneers did not follow cunningly devised fables when they searched and preached the truths of these prophecies they have passed on to us a rich heritage now while not providing a definitive interpretation of the trumpets the committee did establish parameters that must be followed in the study of the trumpets in the seventh-day Adventist Church they reach three conclusions and here they are the literary literary structure divides the book of Revelation into two major sections a historical section that emphasizes the experience of the church and related events during the Christian era that would be the church's the seals and the trumpets and an eschatological that means endtime section that focuses particularly on endtime events and the end of the world that would be the series beginning with Revelation chapter 12 where you have you know the the introduction of the persecution of the 1260 years the dragon be enraged with the woman chapter 13 the Beast his image and his mark revelation 14 the three angels messages etc secondly the series of the seals and the trumpets occur in the historical section of Revelation consequently we should seek for their fulfillment we're in historical time not in the end time except for the very last two or three trumpets and finally the prophecies of the seals and of the trumpets have only what one symbolic fulfil in the course of history now Ellen White warned about the dangers of extracting passages of Revelation from their legitimate historical context she wrote once to a school teacher by the name of John Bell and actually she wrote two long testimonies to him and I've only included just a small portion of what she wrote to him because he was taking prophecies that applied to the past he was applying them to the future he was taking them out of their legitimate historical context Ellen White warned that we need to study each section of Revelation within the time period when it was fulfilled I read from selected messages volume 2 page 102 there have been one in another who in studying their Bibles thought they discovered great light and new theories but thieves these have not been correct the scripture is all true however by miss applying the scripture men arrive at wrong conclusions we are engaged in a mighty conflict and it will become more closed and determined as we near the final struggle we have a sleepless adversary in other words he suffers from insomnia and he is constantly at work upon human minds that have not had a personal experience in the teachings of the people of God for the past 50 years is it important to go back to what was believed originally in the Adventist Church absolutely she continues some will take the truth applicable to their time and place it where in the future events in the train of prophecy they had their fulfillment away in the past are made what future and thus by these theories the faith of some is undermined in another part of this testimony that Ellen White wrote to John Bell on pages 102 and 103 it white wrote from the light that the Lord has been pleased to give me you are in danger of doing the same work presenting before others truths with which have had their place and done their specific work for the time in the history of the faith of the people of God you recognize these facts in Bible history as true but apply them to win apply them to the future they have their force still where in their proper place in the chain of events that have made us as a people what we are today and as such they are to be presented to those who are in the darkness of error very wise counsel from the spirit of prophecy I'm not extracting things that apply to the future and making them past not taking things that happened in the past and applying them to the future like some are doing with the trumpets the trumpets had their past fulfillment at least uh you know we're now in the period of the sixth trumpet all of this has been fulfilled only the seventh trumpet is future now we should not take the trial all of the trumpets and say well this is going to take place at the very end before the close of probation because it's dislocating what we find in the train of prophecy that God has given now where does Ellen White place the trumpets in the flow of time does she make them future did she believe they were past we have clear evidence that Ellen White believed that the sixth trumpet was fulfilled beginning in 1844 which means that the first five trumpets must have been fulfilled when well duh they must have been fulfilled before 1844 right you don't have to have the wisdom of King Solomon to understand that or to Albert or of Albert Einstein now what indications do we have in the writings of Ellen White that the trumpets have been fulfilled to a great degree in the with the exception of the fact that we are now in the period of the sixth trumpet and the seventh trumpet is totally future well the expression time will be no longer is in Revelation 10 in the context of the sixth trumpet now where does Ellen White place that expression time will be no longer does she present that as being past or future past from our time notice this statement that we find in selected messages volume 2 page 105 the book that was sealed was not the book of Revelation but that portion of the prophecy of Daniel which related to the last days he's talking about Daniel 12 verse 4 closed and sealed the book until the time of the end she continues the scripture says but Thou O Daniel shut up the words and seal the book even to the time of the end many shall run to and fro and knowledge shall be increased when the book was opened the proclamation was made time shall be no longer that comes from Revelation 10 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet the Book of Daniel is now unsealed and the revelation made by Christ to John is to come to all the inhabitants of the earth by the increase of knowledge of people is to be prepared to stand in the latter days now notice the next statement this is on pages 107 and 108 of selected messages volume 2 the message of Revelation 14 proclaiming that the hour of God's judgment has come is given in the time of the end and the angel of revelation 10 is represented as having one foot on the sea and one foot on the land showing that the message will be carried to distant lands the ocean will be crossed and the islands of the sea will hear the proclamation of the last message of warning to our world and the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up the shes quality of revelation 10 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet by the way and the angel which I saw stand upon the sea upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven and swore by him that liveth for ever and ever who created heaven and the things that are therein and the earth and the things that therein are and the sea and the things which are therein that there should be time no longer once again she's quoting revelation 10 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet and then she tells us when this was fulfilled this message announces what the end of the prophetic period the disappointment of those who expected to see our Lord in 1844 was indeed bitter to those who had so ardently looked for his appearing it was in the Lord's order that this disappointment should come and that hearts should be what should be revealed so when does Ellen White place the expression time will be no longer what date 1844 so do we project the sixth trumpet to the future no the sixth trumpet Ellen White explains is in the context of Revelation 10 in the past in 1844 notice that the seven thunders that are mentioned in Revelation 10 the seven thunders we don't have time to talk about the seven thunders now we will talk about them a little bit later in this class but Ellen White speaks about the seven thunders which are also in Revelation 10 in the context of the sixth trumpet the special light given to John which was expressed in the seven thunders was a delineation of events which would transpire under the first and second angels messages it was not best for the people to know these things for their faith must necessarily be tested in the order of God most wonderful and advanced truths would be proclaimed the first and second angels messages were to be proclaimed but no further light was to be revealed before these messages had done their specific work this is represented by the angel standing with one foot on the sea proclaiming with the most solemn oath the time should be no longer she's referring to revelation many different phrases that are in revelation 10 6 trumpet she ends a statement by saying this this time which the angel declares with a solemn oath that his time will be no longer is not the end of this world's history neither of probationary time but of prophetic time which should precede the advent of our Lord that is the people will not have another message upon definite time after this period of time reaching from 1842 to 1844 there can be no definite tracing of the prophetic time is that clear so revelation 10 is in the context of this ex trumpet so when is the sixth trumpet beginning its fulfillment its beginning its fulfillment in 1844 when do you hear the seven thunders will find that the seven thunders are events that the that took place between 1842 and 1844 so clearly the sixth trumpet began in the past and it continues as we will see in the present you can't extract this and say no it's right before the close of probation at the end of time or it's after the close of probation it would make absolutely no sense also you remember the bittersweet book in Revelation 10 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet you know is sweet in the mouth and bitter in the stomach to windowsill and white apply that which is found in Revelation 10 in the context of the sixth trumpet notice the next statement that we find at the bottom of page 11 this is life sketches page 189 the waiting people of God approached the hour when they fondly hoped their Joy's would be complete in the coming of the Savior that's 1844 however the time again passed unmarked by the advent of Jesus mortality still clung to us the effects of the curse were all around us it was hard to take up the vexing cares of life that we thought had been laid down forever a bitter what a bitter disappointment fell upon the little flock whose faith had been so strong and whose hope had been so high but we were surprised that we felt so free in the Lord and were so strongly sustained by his strength and grace when was the bitter disappointment when did that take place at some event that's going to take place right before the close of probation or after the close of probation absolutely not it occurs when the sixth trumpet is beginning because it chapter ten is in the context of the sixth trumpet are you following me no Ellen White also plays as the 1260 days and 42 months of revelation 11 which is also in the context of the sixth trumpet she places those events in the context of the sixth trumpet Ellen White understood that the papacy fulfilled the 1260 days and the 42 months of revelation 11 which is an interlude in the sixth trumpet she believed that the that these events the 1260 days and the 42 months occurred from 538 to 1798 and that the second part of revelation 11 was fulfilled in the French Revolution and revelation 11 is in the context of the sixth trumpet Marvin more and others believe that we must reapply the symbolic 42 months and 1260 days and reinterpret them as literal future time Ellen White however explicitly wrote that the 42 months cover the same period as the 1260 days and that both periods apply to the period of papal supremacy during the dark ages she also did a verse by verse analysis of revelation 11 and interpreted from a historical perspective as applying to the French Revolution are you with me or not past events let's read this particular statement here this is found in the book great controversy page 439 the periods here mentioned 42 months and a thousand two hundred and threescore days are the same alike representing the time in which the Church of Christ was to suffer oppression from Rome the 1260 years of papal supremacy began in 538 and were therefore terminate in 1798 so Revelation chapter 11 when it mentions the 1260 days and 42 months is that a past is that describing past events yes she continues at that time a French army entered Rome and made the Pope a prisoner and he died in exile though a new pope was soon afterward elected the papal hierarchy has never since been able to wield the power which it before possessed then she continues even more explicitly power was given unto him to continue forty two months and says the Prophet I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death again she's quoting scripture and he that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword the 42 months are the same as the time times and dividing of time three years and a half or 1260 days in Daniel 7 clear the time during which the papal power was to oppress God's people this period as stated in preceding chapters began with the supremacy of the papacy 80 538 and terminated in 1798 at that time the Pope was made captive by the French army the papal power received its deadly wound and the prediction was fulfilled he that leadeth into captivity shall go into again 30 so revelation place Ellen White places revelation 10 in 11 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet as beginning in the past events in 1844 and also events that occurred during the 1260 years of papal supremacy as well as the French Revolution now finally Ellen White applies the measuring of the temple which is also Revelation chapter it's really it should be part of Revelation chapter 10 but it's in Revelation chapter 11 verse 1 the measuring of the temple of revelation 11 verse 1 which is in the context of the sixth trumpet Ellen White applies that to what began in 1844 once again she's applying the sixth trumpet to the past I read this very quickly the and judgment is taking place and has been going on for some time now the Lord says measure the temple and the worshipers thereof remember when you are walking the streets about your business God is measuring you when you are attending your household duties when you engage in conversation God is measuring you in other words he is judging you remember that your words and actions are being the gharial type that's a old English word for photographed in the books of heaven as the artists on the polished plate reduces reproduces the face here is the work going on measuring the temple and its worshipers to see who will stand in the last day those who stand fast shall have an abundant entrance into the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ when we are doing our work remember there is one that is watching the spirit the spirit in which we are doing it shall we not bring the Savior into our everyday lives into our secular work and domestic duties then in the name of God we want to leave behind everything that is not necessary all gossiping or unprofitable visiting and present ourselves as servants of the Living God so when it says measure the temple is that something that's going to happen in the future or is that something that began in 1844 and continues to this day thus we are still in the period of the sixth trumpet in other words well we are going to stop our first session here and when we get together for our second session we are going to finish this a chapter on introductory matters relating to the trumpets will begin at the bottom of page 13 the relationship between the seals between the seals and the trumpets so we're going to take go back and take a look at the seals and we're going to see how important that is as it relates to the seven trumpets so don't miss the next exciting episode [Music] you
