well let's take out our blank sheet of notes there I want to talk to you about how God multiplies your time through your last five percent will explain that along the way how God takes time and there's a multiplier effect that God puts in place that if we steward that sector of our life correctly and according to God's ways he promises to multiply the substance of our life now each of us has given been given the same amount of time 24 hours a day everyone God has distributed that to us but like the talents that he gives in the New Testament we have to invest it correctly and that's where he rates us tests us in how we invest our time the gift that God has given to every single one of us that'll make a huge difference well let me start with a story about time a story is told of these two elderly gentlemen both in their upper 80s they would meet they had been meeting for years at a local mall where they would walk and then have coffee and talk about current events on a daily basis and and they were just dear friends and one day they as they met one of them showed up and said man I tell you I just got the most space-age advanced technology hearing aid I can hear a pin drop now and that thing is so small you can hardly see it and this thing cost me $5,000 his friend said wow $5,000 what kind isn't he said 12 o'clock it doesn't always work we're gonna talk about time and how God multiplies time and we're gonna start with a scripture and we'd like you to read it together it'll come on the screen so would you read it out loud with me go for buy me your days will be multiplied and years of life will be added to you did you catch those first few words for by me your days will be multiplied did you know that God promises to multiply the time that you wisely invest can give you more time but it can multiply what you have been given because you see contrary to popular belief you can't find more time you can't like look under your bed go there sometime I need more no time isn't hiding you can't find more time you can't borrow more time or you can't save time you can't go to the Bank of Hawaii and say could I borrow some time mine's running out no you cannot buy time know you've heard four people say time is money not true time can cannot make you more money you can make more money you can't make more time but like money you can waste it you can spend it poorly you can lose it you can even get it stolen but like money you can invest it you can invest time if you don't invest time intentionally it will be irretrievably lost but if you steward it wisely God promises to multiply it now he gives us a warning let's read it here's the warning let's read it together out loud go be careful how you walk not as unwise men but as wise making the most of your time for the days are evil in other words he's saying if you waste your time if you squander your time if you do nothing with your time evil is waiting he said well what kind of evil consequences you'll end up at a dead end with frustrations with discouragement you'll face your future that's void because of the way that we didn't invest the time that was given to us so if you think about a time is equal to life think about it if you waste your time you waste your life you master your time you master your life someone said it this way bad news and good news bad news is time flies good news you're the pilots you decide the destination what's going to be made of time because time is probably your most valuable commodity really yeah you want to know the value of one year ask a student who just flunked his last year he's got to remake it all up you want to know the value of a month ask someone who just got a bad diagnosis from his doctor about his cancer and the doctor says you don't have much time left ask him the value of a month mutter know the value of a week ask a mother who just gave birth to a premature baby and that baby just needed one more week to have its lungs developed ask that mother the value of one week you want to know the value of a second ask a lady that just barely missed having a head-on collision where one second later she would have been dead the value of a second time is your most valuable commodity reminds me of a story of a guy talking with God and he asks God he said God God tell me he said what is how long is a million years to you well God said to you it's a million years to me it's a second he said what about a million dollars a million dollars to me it's like a penny whoa said the guy he worked up a little bit of courage and said uh then could I have a million dollars God said just a second let's take a look at this next Scripture and see how we can learn how to invest time would you read it with me go teach us to number our days so we may present to you a heart of wisdom you catch that first part teach us to number our days in other words taking into account how to invest is something we can actually learn and if we'll learn God promises to multiply so how's he do that I'll give you a little math it's a lesson here alright do you remember in school you would have a math problem and let's say you would have things like 2 times 1/2 times 2 2 3 etc now 2 times 1 equals everybody say to your brilliant brilliant - all right 2 times 2 is good you got the rhythm 2 by 3 is good and 2 by 4 is a piece of wood that's two by four no no no I'd say yeah you're right alright so you have in this first column here a common number of two but you have in the second column something that increases the results commensurately so which of these numbers if this is column one and this is column two which column has the multipliers to write column two these are the multipliers here and you increase these here it can exponentially after a while increase the results now this is called the multiplier effect and I want to talk to you about how in your time that you have in your day you have a certain multiplier effect and I am here to suggest that the last 5% is what God uses to multiply the other 95% of your day your life and give you fruitfulness and success you say well what are you talking about 85% of what you do anybody can do for example anybody can sit in the church or anybody can do email not now anybody can do texting not now we have cameras watching you so anybody can do that stuff talk on the telephone anybody can have lunch and 85% of what you do anybody can do you got that that right okay 85% of what you do anybody can do now 10% of what you do like your job whether you're a surgeon or your salesman or your auto mechanic 10% of what you do someone else can do with the same amount of training and experience but with some modicum of training and knowledge 10% of what you do someone else can do you've already got that however 5% of what you do nobody else can do but you that's the multiplier effect only you can do it really yep you see your greatest asset is going to be your uniqueness there's certain things only you can do well how many hours a week will that take up in my life that 5% not much and because it's going to be such a small amount of time you have to invest it well you have to plan a foreign you say well how many hours is that okay let's take a look how many hours are there in a week somebody say 168 cuz you guys are brilliant that's right it's a 168th can't believe it yes 168 hours a week now of those 168 hours some of it's already spoken for for example you're gonna spend 50 hours sleeping give the seven or eight hours a night some of you a lot more than that if you're teenagers and if and you spend 22 hours a week eating some of you a lot more and 11 hours a week in personal hygiene shaving or taking a shower deodorant some of you a lot less than 11 or though we'll talk about that later a 10 hours a week in commuting going to work and if you live in Kapolei add to that pain and suffering to 10 hours a week and then you have 40 hours a week let's say at school or work or whatever it might be somewhere in that combination these are approximants so you figure a hundred and thirty three hours are taken up here in things that sort of are out of your control which leaves only 35 hours discretionary to your own time if you divide 35 hours by 7 days it leaves you five hours a day that you have to invest very wisely and I'm talking about those five hours sort of like being your 5% and if you invest that wisely this will be the multiplier effect if you prioritize this it will influence 95 percent not the other way around you concentrate on this you might lose that but if you concentrate on this you're gonna gain you say well what's like that five percent what are you talking about your five percent will be just say it this way five percent is what only you can't thank you what only you can do for example eighty five percent of what you do anybody can do ten percent someone else with some amount of training can do but five percent only you can do and this is what God's gonna hold you accountable for believe it or not because this five percent will affect everything else not the other way around let me give you the 5% in my life anyway 5% only the things that I can do here's one only I no one else in the universe only I can be a husband to my wife Anna I can't delegate that out I can't assign that out only I can do that only I can be a dad to my kids only I can do that you remember your greatest asset is your uniqueness only what you can do now some of you say well I'm not married or I was married I'm not anymore or I don't have a family I don't have kids these principles will apply to every single person well I'm a grandfather I'm not kind of kids anymore listen I want you to take these principles archive them in your heart because one day either you're going to be married you're going to have a family or if you're past that stage or if you're not married don't choose to be you may end up counseling or advising someone in that situation and you're gonna have to have some of the principles of God within you so that you can give wise counsel why because it ain't all about you alone you see there's two ministries of the Holy Spirit one is to reveal the things of God to you and the other is to reveal the things of God through you God can use use you as a vessel to help a friend help a neighbor help someone in trouble and if you don't have it in here because it didn't apply to me then you're not gonna be of great use when it comes to God using you so take these principles to heart so the first is only I can be a husband to my wife Anna secondly only I can be a dad to my kids I can't delegate that out I cannot abdicate that role to the schools or youth pastor or someone else it's mine and one of the major problems today is dads think they can abdicate that role to the school system you cannot the third is only I can grow spirit in my relationship with Christ I can't expect because my grandfather was a minister that I'm holy enough to get to heaven that I'm holy enough for God no Abraham Lincoln said this well he said it doesn't matter how tall your grandfather was everybody has to grow for themselves spiritual growth you have to grow only you can do that and keeping yourself physically fit only I can do that for myself I wish I could delegate exercise out to somebody hire a young kid pay the minimum wage and tell them you go work out for me and when you work out for me it comes to my benefit go here's some money go work out in about seven o'clock at night all of a sudden in at home I'm sir who ou are getting stronger Oh mutt that bugger must be lifting plenty weights today brah oh I'll go pay him one bonus no I wish I could hire someone to run three miles for me oh I do that every day no there are certain things only you can do it's part of your 5% and lastly only you can take time to enjoy life you can't have someone else do it for you go take this cruise and tell me how it was now only you can take time to enjoy life and we're gonna go through each of these to make it very applicable and very simple to apply but that's your 5% that's the multiplier effect right here of the 95% you get this right everything else changes you get this wrong this also changes but for the negative let's take a look at each of these number one would you write down in your notes a vibrant relationship and growing relationship with your spouse now remember if you're not married still listen because you're gonna need these principles you know it says that somewhere if somebody said happy wife I be life I think that should be in the Bible shouldn't it because really true how many of you would agree if you have a vibrant relationship with your wife it affects everything else and conversely if you have a terrible relationship with your spouse it'll affect the rest of your life how many of you know that to be true yeah absolutely and so this 5% affects everything else in your life in the book of Timothy it talks about deacons but deacons that word deacons every one of us is like a deacon because it's the word diaconis which is a servant of God so he's gonna give us some instructions for servants of God and especially on this Father's Day let's take a gander at this would you read this with me on the screen go deacons or God's servants must be husbands of only one wife and good managers of their children and their own households now when it says husbands should men should be the husbands of only one wife the reason it says it like that is because in the original what it means is this you are to be in talking to dad's just for a second you are to be a one-woman man that's that's the real translation because you know you can be married and still have eyes for other ladies you're not a one-woman man you're like a three woman man but I'm just I'm so married no it's not about the certificate it's about the heart of that person and so the Timothy is saying that a Paul saying the Timothy that needs to be a one-woman man not just married to one let me give you the importance of that through a story that was in the first part of my ministry I was fresh out of Bible College and there was a man eastern part of Oregon I went to Bible College and western part and in the eastern part there's a one of the last few circuit riding preachers one of the last of the mohicans where he didn't pastor one church he didn't sir to church he pastored three churches and they were miles and miles apart and so here's his regimen every weekend he would preach at one church have breakfast with the people that small 40-member congregation drive two and a half hours and then have a noontime message and sermon at another place and then have lunch with them and then drive another two and a half three hours to a third location there we would have an evening service and he'd have some dinner with the congregants they're all small churches around 30 to 50 people and then a four hour trek back to his point of origin well he had heard me speak at some youth conference so he said would you come and speak for me and he told me about his circuit riding route and I thought wow this is at venturous and it's like a safari so I said okay so I remember going to his house Saturday and stayed over at his house and Sunday morning we loaded up into his car and he drove a Ford Maverick how many of you remember the Mavericks who raise your hand okay you're old I don't anyway we get in this car and we go to the first service and so I preach and he's just sitting there watching and and then we have breakfast with the people two and a half hours later we go to the second location have a service and we have lunch two and a half hour drive later a third location and I speak and we have dinner and now we're on our way home for hours in the car and I reminisce about how he was loved by the people and how there was such an ambiance of compassion and true genuine authentic caring and there's just a beautiful relationship now this man had been he was in his eighties by this time I think early eighties and he had been in ministry for 40 years 40 years and on the way back I said and I called him brother cook I said brother cook if you could distill 40 years of ministry into one thing and tell me that one thing what would it be what do you mean I said take all of your experiences all of your knowledge everything that you have gained distill it into one thing what would you tell this young Minister like me it's fresh out of Bible College what would it be he said one thing I said one thing and I pulled out my pen I thought here it is man it's gonna be a revelation from God this is gonna come with a lightning strike all kinds of cool things he said one thing I said just one thing distill everything of 40 years and one thing what would that be that'll be the key to ministry success and I'm waiting like this and he's tapping the Maverick steering wheel for about four minutes which seemed like an eternity and then he turned to me said one things have one thing he said all right here it is I don't know man I was just I was there like a chicken skin or anything and he looked at me and he said stick with your wife I thought that's a stupidest piece of advice I have ever got I didn't even write it down I thought it was so done I write that down put my pen away I've been in ministry for 40 years this year and if I as I look at that's not what I'm trying to tell you here so I've been in ministry 40 years and if I could distill everything I've learned and say this to you dads I'd say this one thing stick with your wife now I know mistakes have been made and sometimes we say the question is can you change your past the question is now what you're going to do with your past the question is what are you gonna do with your tomorrows so take the principles of God and allow them to be embedded in your heart so that you'll live differently think differently counsel differently regardless of your past counsel not according to your experience but counsel according to the ways of God and so take that and run with it because it is so important it's a party or five percent you get that right God says I'll multiply the other ninety five percent you watch but you get that wrong it'll affect the other ninety five percent of your life the second thing that only I can do is to be a dad to my kids so a healthy family relationships now you say well I don't have a family oh yes you do everybody does well no no I'm not married I don't have a family no everyone has a family it could be a small group of friends that God's asked you to commune with that'll speak into your life like brothers and sisters or this church could be your family you're single person a single lady this becomes your family and can I encourage you that you need to give somebody permission to speak into your life it could be a pastor or a counselor or a revered friend but you need to give someone permission to speak into your life listen because we're all frail people when it comes down to it and there's gonna be times that we can make pretty good decisions but there will be times mark my words where you are not going to be able to make a good decision the pull of the world will be too great and you need someone who's clear of mind close to God loves Jesus and loves you in that order to make the decision for you and you submit to that those will be what we called last week opportune moments for the enemy because at those moments the enemy is preying on you waiting for you to make that one mistake because your eternity your future your destiny is linked to those decisions and God will raise up someone to help you to navigate that precipice so you don't go over the edge and you need to give somebody permission to speak into your life one of the greatest mistakes of Christians is when they start growing they figure oh I can hear God on my own yeah that's cool so they just kind of fly solo and then they get nailed at this opportune moment the world's pole is so great on them and they're not listening to anybody else and they make the most fatal mistakes because they forgotten what a family is but going back to those or dads let me just speak to you your relationship with your family is so critical let me tell you about a song that was very popular in yesteryear it was a song by Harry Chapin who was a well-known musician and installing became very popular it's called cat's in the cradle and that's some poignant lyrics to it let me read to you some excerpts of his song that went to the top of the charts but yet it had a very prophetic tone to it goes like this my child was born just the other day he came into the world in the usual way but there were planes to catch and bills to pay so he learned to walk when I was away and he was talking before I knew it and as he grew he'd say I'm gonna be just like you dad you know I'm gonna be like you my son turned ten just the other day he said thanks for the ball dad come on let's play I said not today I got a lot to do he said that's okay he walked away and smiled and said I'm gonna be just like you dad you know I'm gonna be like you last verse I've long since retired and my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said I'd like to see you if you don't mind he said I'd love to dad if I could find the time you see my new jobs a hassle and the kids have the flu but it was sure nice talking to you dad sure was nice talking to you and the song ends like this just then I realized my son's grown up just like me now my son's just like me now that's poignant enough but let me give you the rest of the story in actuality Harry Chapin did not write that song was written by his wife Sandy Chapin right after their son Josh was born when Josh was seven years old Harry Chapin was doing 200 concerts a year and his wife said to Harry Harry when you're gonna spend time with Josh he said I got a summer tour and it's full so I promised right after the summer tour I'll take some time off and I'll spend some time he didn't make it to the end of the summer because on July 16th he was killed in a car crash on the Long Island Expressway outside of New York he said you don't want five words to determine your life at the end which was I didn't have the time when the actuality all of us have the same amount of time we just have to make sure that we invested in that 5% because that's the multiplier effect and those are the things only you can do nobody else can do that remember your greatest asset is your uniqueness what is it that only you can do so the first is your relationship with your spouse and the second your relationship with your family and let me give you the third the third is only I can grow spiritually I wish someone else could read the Bible like crazy for me I wish but she just can't that's why here at New Hope we encourage everyone to learn how to do daily devotions and you can do it with others but you need to do it with yourselves you and Jesus because you've got to grow spiritually and one day the enemy is going to come and you'll be tested and if this stuff hasn't been archived it's too late so only you can grow spiritually you've got to do that and let's read with Colossians 1:10 says as God encourages us in the same fashion read it with me go see to it that you walk in a manner worthy of the Lord pleasing him in all respects bearing fruits and every good work here it is and increasing in the knowledge of God how many of you who would agree with me that we could increase still a little more in the knowledge of God raise your hand yeah yeah you see if you're increasing in the knowledge of God you're staying fresh oh you might have a mile and a half left to go but if you're increasing in the knowledge of God even if you're in the second grade as it were spiritually it keeps you fresh it keeps your ears keen to what the Holy Spirit is saying but when you stop growing or increasing your hearing atrophies things start to get dull and you could be 20 years old in the Lord and get dull but if you're continuing to grow it keeps you fresh in the things of God so that's why your daily devotions is so important and that's a part of your 5 percent because only you can do that and let me give you the fourth not only growing spiritually but would you write down staying physically healthy physically healthy oh I wish I could delegate that out I wish I could pay somebody to run for me pump weights for me get on the treadmill for me Oh while I watch TV and use my remote and exercise my thumb I wish someone could do that for me but only I can keep myself physically healthy now I'm gonna share something with you that blow your mind are you ready when you take time to keep yourself physically healthy it's almost like going to church you say what are you talking about what we're about to read is a scripture that we call this sometimes the sanctuary the house of God where the presence of God comes because people are gathered together you know that the Bible is going to tell you that your body is also a sanctuary and the Holy Spirit lives there too and when you keep your temple healthy it honors God and when you don't conversely it dishonours God so when you're actually doing stuff like pushing aside the second or third helping of desert it's like you're honoring God because you're gonna take care of this no one can do it for you only you can do it and it isn't something just physical it is actually something spiritual let's read the scripture you'll see what I mean go do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you whom you have received from God you are not your own you were bought with a price here it is therefore honor God with your body so when we are taking care of our body both physically morally with energy it honors God and when we get lakhs it's a dishonor to God because he bought us with a price and he wants us to honor him with who we are so when it when it comes time to to go to the gym or take a walk do that and it honors God isn't it true if your health goes flat does it affect the other 95 percent of your life you better believe it but if you're healthy and energetic will that affect everything else I tell people work on yourself more than you work on your job because if your improve moving yourself everybody around you will become automatic beneficiaries of your improvement in health but if you let that droop everything else droops you understand the multiplier so your 5% is what only you can do no one else and let me give you the last one only you can take time to enjoy life do you know the first four years of pioneering this church although we live on a beautiful island surrounded by beautiful water because I was so busy rushing here and rushing there I never touched the water once in four years until God convicted me and said man I created all of this beauty and you are not taking time for it did you know that when you take time to enjoy life it gives you time to be grateful to God you say wow Lord this is so beautiful thank you for this but if you don't if you're caught up in the rush of day world you watch after 3-4 days you've hardly stopped to say thank you God for this beautiful creation there's an old rabbinic saying that goes like this one day God will hold us all accountable for all the things that he created for us to enjoy but we refused to do so so I'm going to give you a rule a principle that'll transform your life and it's called the ten second rule are you ready for this it'll be revelation it'll change you all right we all know about the five-second rule when it comes to food services that fell on the floor that right all right so it's like you dropped something on the floors like Oh five-second rule and then you you know consume it and I think about that and I thought that's the dumbest thing in the world it's like you drop pizza boom face down on the dirty floor and you can hear the conversation of two germs let's jump on this thing and in fact the human let's do it know there's a five-second rule what yeah the human just invoked the five-second rule so captain 1,001 1,002 1,003 1,004 Oh Harry just pick the pizza back up and he's eating oh man why are we gonna infect how are we gonna infect humans when they keep invoking the five-second rule I don't think so germs don't follow rules on immediate contact it's infected but yet we have fun with this five-second rule well I'm gonna give you a bonafide rule and it's the ten second rule are you ready this is how you can enjoy life here it is take ten not not our just just ten seconds ten seconds more to enjoy the sunset how often we look at oh that's nice let's go come on get in the car you kids get in the car let's go yeah yeah yeah yeah I thought get in the car no no ten seconds just wow Oh was one green flash you know just ten seconds ten seconds more at the table enjoying that last bite instead of inhaling your food and then rushing off just ten seconds you know that was really tasteful thank you Lord that was great I tell you it will increase your gratefulness tenfold 10 seconds more with a friend - just tell them how much you appreciate them just ten seconds ten seconds more saying good night to a child just just 10 seconds 10 seconds more with your spouse to say that you're grateful 10 seconds more to watch the Sun Rise and breathe in the fresh air before you rush off in your car just 10 seconds you'll find that you're being grateful to God so much more and life becomes so much more beautiful 10 seconds just 10 seconds then it's hard for us to do because we live with raisin we've been conditioned by a rush a day world but ten seconds discipline yourself ten seconds to just whoa and reflect on the importance of what you just heard some of your like it's just too hard just 10-second know just say anything don't keep this quiet say anything I don't care what you say just say something 10 seconds just 10 seconds 10 seconds of sitting with someone just to say it's good to be with you she's 10 seconds not long but if you will apply and invoke the 10-second rule it will help you to enjoy life that God created for you and that'll be a part of your 5% which is an exponential multiplying effect for the other 95% if you'll prioritize not abdicate the other 95 just prioritize the 5 it will allow God to multiply your years and your days that's what he promised because you are now investing time wisely because you understand the importance of that 5% and you will begin to appreciate as you live the abundant life that God promised amen
