[Music] hey guys you're watching dirt bike Channel I'm your host Kyle Brothers and then today I got a special treat I've got my good buddy Scott Seeley here and we've got this beautiful machine behind us this is the yz250 X that you saw me do on the channel last year last fall and winter and it found a good home with my buddy Scott here and he has kind of made it his own as you notice it doesn't look anything like it did when I had it and I kind of wanted to let Scott talk about some of the things that he's done too and his experience with the bike so Scott what has been tell me a little bit about your background in a couple you know a minute or so of the different bikes that you've had and is this the first Yamaha maybe talk a little bit about that this is the first Yamaha I've ever had I've had several two strokes and four strokes I used to be a Kawasaki guy had a lot of KXAS 250s a 450 at 250 F and then some more 250 s and then I had three Fork ATMs in a row and this is the first Yamaha I've ever had and I several years ago probably like 2010 I kind of switched back to two strokes I've read kindled my love for the two-stroke I always liked two strokes they seemed to fit my style well and I just think they're very economical and fun to ride but I've never tried at Yamaha I've had some friends with Yamahas mostly four-strokes but I was excited to try something different change it up a little and get something besides it at KTM and I was excited when when Yamaha released the 250 X with more of a off-road specific package yeah coz they took their basically their 2006 motocross bike and it hasn't really changed much but then they changed a little bit of the gearing they changed a little bit of the valving on this and and what what more things did you have to do to feel comfortable with it well I liked the bike from the very beginning as soon as I got it it it was really fun to ride the power delivery was really smooth I felt like it was a little soft on the bottom end really off idle you really had to write it in the mid-range which is kind of classic of the older to 50s you know pre 2000 and even then my KX to he's just had a lot more torque low so I tried to find ways to do that I ended up modifying the stock head and got some good results did you just mill it down yeah I put it in my lathe and I turned it off and I filed some grooves in it to try anyway I just experimented I did research and experimented and I liked it but then I got talking to Kelsie at RK tech and he hooked me up with that sweet head on there and that made a huge difference the other things that I've done to try to get that power that I wanted was the pipe and the spark arrestor because I like to ride for us and I don't want to cause any problems so I want the spark arrestor instead of a stock pipe just so you guys know Scott is a very aggressive rider among the the group of people that I ride with he is the most aggressive and so he he demands a lot of machines and and and he gets it so other other thing with the Yamaha as much as I love the platform especially the suspension suspension was was phenomenal but I was a little bit bigger guy and it was under sprung for me I ended up changing the springs in the valving to try to smooth that out a little bit and now the thing is dialed probably my favorite bike I've ever owned wait so this buy you've had what eight ten nine bikes 12 12 15 by 15 bikes and you're gonna go on record to say you this is this is your favorite bike so far absolutely to date my favorite favorite bike so what is that what does that tell the viewers about you know different bike brands because you've had like this you've been riding bikes that you've been riding bikes you've been riding bikes since we were 10 well and this is the first Yamaha so talking maybe a little bit about about that experience I mean what if what if you'd never tried this would your is it good to broaden your horizons with different machines absolutely try it I mean you're not married to him you can sell it if you don't if you get a bike and you don't like it and sell it just get rid of it and and pick something up that you do like you look around ride your friends bikes see what you like what you don't the Kai Abba Triple S fork is probably my favorite part on this bike the suspensions just so good is so progressive it's got good bump compliance it's really controlled but it doesn't seem to blow through the stroke like like the the Kate cams I've had and I'm not taking anything away from Katie em they're great but the suspension on this is top-notch so Scot we were just talking a little bit about a little bit about clutch and brakes on this bike and maybe even a little bit about the jetting maybe talk about some of the the struggles that you had and the things that you found that worked really well well jetting I never I always felt like it was a little rich before it went to wide open throttle coming off of the needle it's got a power jet in the carb that I could never quite get tuned so I ended up going with electron and I felt like that solved solved my problem I know that that's an expensive add-on and I think with enough searching and maybe talking to some really qualified jetting technicians you could probably get the stock carburetor to work well it worked really well everywhere except just in one spot in the upper mid-range of the power delivery yeah but and keeping keep in mind Scot is a lot more particular with his iie I felt the bike the bike was running fine but Scott is a very is a perfectionist and a tinkerer and he wanted to get something out and he had a hard time working that little teeny piece of that carburetor out right right and then the problem was it happened to be in a spot in the power where I like to ride and so I noticed it a lot I could ride around it but I didn't I didn't want to have to I want it to work in any situation even if it's not ideal I wanted to always have be really predictable and have the power that I want was that your was this your first experience with electron first time use an electron and it did what they said it would do thing runs great at every altitude that I've had it out I've had it from about 5,000 feet all the way to over 10 to 10,000 the other day I'll roll in some footage of us up on a peak that was 10,000 feet that this bike this bike went up to it and it rode amazing never missed a beat jetting was great and I've also discovered through the help of Kelsey that a little bit Richard jetting off idle actually helps the torque smoothes it out makes it more tractable and that's worked really well and the electron did what they said it would do they said maybe a tiny bit of fine tuning on the Idol and maybe the needle position and I am a quarter turn on the metering rod from where they sent it and I've adjusted the idle and that's it and it runs spectacular fantastic let's talk a little bit about the clutch and brake I know that I know that just grabbing your clutch there's a little bit more tension on your clutch than my clutch this is that this is a mechanical and mechanical it's a steel braided wire clutch talked a little bit about your experience with the clutch and the brakes on this well coming from KTMs one of my favorite things about the KTM was the hydraulic clutch that it's always adjusting itself adjusts every time you pull the lever and I was a little worried that going to the Yamaha I would miss that and obviously the KTM s have such a buttery smooth clutch pole and on the stand I notice but on the trail it really hasn't been an issue I don't feel like it's a major sacrifice not nearly as much of a sacrifice I thought it would be another thing on the Yamaha is they up sized the rotor on the front and gave it a little more stopping power so I really don't feel like I sacrificed with the brakes either it's been really good you know on the beta that I had it's got Nissen brakes I think they're this pretty much the same brand of you know brake manufacturers this I I felt that I had the brakes would grab on me and I just I I could never get comfortable with that have you had any like grabbing this issues with your front brake not at all these brakes are very very progressive and I put the a RC breakaway levers on there and I can adjust lever position within those levers so that you can get about any field that you want just keep your fluid fresh make sure your lines are in good condition and and they're good but no I haven't felt like it was grabbing at all so you also had your suspension revolve was it was at Division MX is that who did it yep Jessi black it talked talk about your experience there great experience Jesse's a professional he knows his stuff he's worked for Supercross teams follow the circuit he's very accomplished mechanic he he talked to me got a feel and and we've raced together too in the desert so he kind of knew what I wanted I dropped it off and he had it about a week turnaround I took it to him on Monday picked it up on Friday bolted it on my bike set the SAG and I haven't even moved a clicker it's amazing so one of the one of the issues that I had with this bike in technical terrain as it's got the motocross gearing in first and second gear and then they can't they kind of tweaked third fourth and fifth on this bike but they didn't really touch first and second has that been an issue with you and maybe talk about what happened with the sprocket on the rear what you kind of accidentally bumped into okay well I was riding on a pretty rocky trail with some shale on a piece of shale ripped my chain guide off and it went through the sprocket and broke my hub I thought I told you guys he's hard on things he's the only person that I know that can shear things right off of his bike yeah anyway I welded that all back on and when I was ordering sprockets I forgot riding K cams I always had a 48 rear on those s X's oh because he was riding the 250sx bikes he wasn't riding the cross-country the X YZ or things he was riding a 250 SX for the last couple of them and so I ended up ordering a 48 but this comes with a fifty to three or sprocket and I didn't want to put the 48 on cuz I certainly didn't want to go higher in the gearing and then when I went at some point I'd come come up with a 51 tooth and so it's one tooth on the rear and I put that on because I didn't have a 50 when I was putting my bike back together and I haven't really ridden it much except on this trip and I really liked it it just it made a subtle difference but the differences were all good and the thing will still go 80 plus yeah we were pulling it I've got the 250 XE as you guys know and we were doing some sixth well he was in fifth gear I was in sixth gear we were going we'd go like 30 miles an hour and up up a canyon and then just roll on the throttle all the way and do like top gear poles and and the bolt both bikes pulled identically to each other and their top speed was within a fraction of a mile an hour even even though he has geared that down one tooth in the rear so for me if I if I kept that bike I'd probably go up to a 52 they're just because I'm not quite as skilled at the I'm just not as skilled as Scott is and it would help me to go up to a 52 tooth if I was going to keep that bike long term for the type of riding that I like to do so clutch control it's all about clutch control if the powers there is just momentum and clutch control and coming from motocross bikes that's mostly what I've ridden I had a 300 XC but mostly it's been KX 450s KX 250 s so you'd be you've become accustomed to that high first gear and you've learned you've learned to you ever learn to just modulate the power and the clutch that way to to use it and in fact when I ride an x CW or even even some of the XC s people gear them down and I feel like with that low of a first gear I've lost control I will say however that I think the gearing on the new on the recent KTM 250 X C's and 300 XC s it's perfect first is right where it needs to be and then it's just really evenly spaced all the way up and the six beats pretty awesome good so Scott tell me a little bit about this modification that you've done to your air box right here well you know people always talk about air flow and an engine really is just an air pump so what I've done here as you can see as I put this nice porting in the air box I didn't have any tools with me on the trail and I really felt like I needed that extra power to compete with these key themes so I just found a big stick and I shoved it through there and and according the footage that you're looking at now guys is the footage of of that stick that he used I thought was really that was really into in ingenuitive on the trail I was I was impressed your bike wasn't running exactly how you wanted them you decided to just vent it using this using the materials you had around you that was that was very good I was you know I always try to be innovative and just problem-solve on the fly and it really worked out well for me this time I wasn't sure I was gonna happen with the dusty conditions I don't know if it really helped but it made a big difference because I smoked you guys all day very good and that is true [Music] you [Music]
