all right guys it's morgan coming to you with the much awaited much anticipated video about installing the panthera motorsports electric start on a yz250 now a lot of you guys are going to be like why did you just buy a ktm or why don't you just kick it or all those things right so i have a ktm with electric start and it's awesome and i can kick it i got a new hip just for that so that's all well and good but the reality is that the one thing missing from the blue bikes to compete with the orange bikes is the electric start everybody loves the electric start it's awesome especially in the gnarly rocky stuff we're on weird side hills or things like that it's just super super handy or if you're old like me so finally someone came out with electric start panther motorsports from canada i think they're from quebec maybe anyway they're from canada they've been building electric starts for cr500s and counterbalance motors for cr500s and all kinds of crazy stuff they make a 625 single cylinder like big board two strokes just craziness right so they finally came out with a kit and i got on the list i got one i'm super stoked full disclosure i paid full boat for this thing so uh this is not sponsored by them um but i thank them very much for getting me the kit and i'm really stoked to show you guys what it looks like how it installs and then eventually we'll test it and put it through all the rigors of me crashing and beating on it and all the stuff and see how it holds up so let's start with what comes in the box right there all that so this obviously is the workhorse of the situation it's the ignition cover uh with the starter in it it's a lot like the old ktm style or the gas gas style see here starter spins this way and then that has got a worm gear in here and it spins this to then hit the flywheel but as you probably know yz flywheels don't have gears on them so it comes with a new flywheel beautiful machined piece of metal it's absolutely gorgeous so you might be looking at this flywheel and going well morgan that doesn't have any gears either and it doesn't but here's how they solve that problem uh these machined holes back in here fit these holes and there's a sprag clutch in here and this goes on like that and it spins one way not the other so super stoked about that it's a beautiful piece and then part of the reason uh it took me longer to get this than it could have is i wanted to get the full charging setup they had a kit ready to go with just a battery and the starter and all that and you can just hit it and you can just charge the battery up in your at your house and start it like a hundred times or something like that which is cool but part of the whole thing is i'm trying to build a ktm beater out of this uh 250. i already like the motor and the power a lot and i love the suspension chassis a lot um but again a starter would be awesome and then lights would be really cool because i like riding at night so there's a stator it makes i think 80 watts of power which is awesome and i think that's these plugs right here just ac power which is sweet um so really stoked about that and then here's the battery box uh it just goes in the air box like i said i'm going to film all this we'll get it all down here on this video but drops in bolts in it's all good it takes a special battery because it's super narrow this way unfortunately they're unable to ship batteries from canada around the world i think they can ship them in canada but not to the united states so they didn't send me a battery which i knew was going to happen but i also didn't get the right battery ordered so in this video we're going to just hook it up to a normal battery that won't be actually bolted down in to try it out but when i get the other battery i'll show you guys what that looks like it's just one of the anti-gravity real narrow guys so anyway let's get started so we're gonna start with reading the instructions because i really don't know um how it all goes we're gonna find out uh yeah join me on this odyssey all right to do this we're to start by taking this cover off use my impact driver since these are stupid phillips head screws that no one should ever use on anything [Applause] so this is not what a normal yz flywheel looks like this has got a weight on it um but no big deal gonna pop that sucker off get the stator out of the way uh and then we'll get the new stuff going in get flywheels off you gotta have a flywheel puller otherwise you will struggle mightily and pretty much all two strokes modern and even old ones take the same flywheel puller this one it goes it it's a left-hand thread so you turn it left to go tight get it down in there you want to make sure you get it pretty far down in there so that you're not dealing with you know you're not pulling threads out if it's not all the way in go in here get our impact there we go now i'm gonna save all this stuff first of all for two reasons one is in case it doesn't work then this whole thing is a mess and also in case i ever sell the bike i want to take this the electric start off and put it on another one [Music] spot where it can live also phillips for some unknown reason gonna pop this out you know now i gotta figure out how to get that out of there man to mainly so when we run the other one up in there stator out now when you're doing anything in here you always want to take a really close look in here and make sure nothing looks like it's leaking this looks great it's nice and dry and happy so now i'm going to spray that thing out with brake cleaner and then blast out with air and get it really really clean before we install the new stuff all right so we got that nice and clean our super shiny new uh panther motors uh stator which is absolutely beautiful so one key to dealing with these things is you want to get the woodruff key in place before you put the stator in mainly because it is just too tight to get in there so get that width of key in there and it's up now so it shouldn't fall out there we go pulsar coil is in a different spot it's uh normally it's up here but it looks like with this kit the way it goes it's gonna go like that so it says it's got a timing mark let's find that timing mark oh there we go okay huh so right down in there there's a timing mark on the stator plate and then there's a mark on the cases which i never knew was there but that lines up just right so now we're going to install their screws which are much better than the stupid phillips little buttonhead allens and put those in and then they say to torque them to 70 inch pounds they already sent a tech bulletin out about this um i guess they have the oil leaks in here because this is actually going to get filled with oil now which it never has and most two strokes aren't but um if you guys are familiar with the old ktm uh starters that was one of the mods you could seal it up and put um oil in here to help lubricate everything so i like that idea but they say you got to fill this up with silicone so all right so we got the wires routed up here and now we're plugging them in and this is nice this is everything just fits the you know factory uh plug-ins you don't have to do any wiring like any clipping of things or moving of this or that it all just goes it's tight obviously i'd recommend putting a little dielectric grease on this as you go together so next thing we're going to do is put this sub frame back on so i'm going to slap the subframe back on and then we'll put the battery box in and run those wires [Music] all right so frames back on let's read more of the instructions so there's our air box i think this is going to go like that somehow so we gotta move some stuff out of the way and get the air filter out of the way for now and then we'll get that thing in there so here's the thing i'm pretty sure this goes up underneath here [Music] like that but they don't mention that to do that you're gonna have to drill these holes out it's not in the instructions so gonna take a look and see if there's any other way to do it but i'm pretty sure i'm going to drill that out the threads out of that and then run that through yeah see if we can't knock those out so no if you buy one of these kits and you got threaded holes right there with your drill you got to knock those nuts out of there before you can put this thing together put that aside this is a pretty clean way of mounting this thing considering that the bike was not ever intended to have this all right we're struggling a bit and that's because this isn't a brand new motorcycle things probably aren't that straight and this is an aftermarket part so it's probably not exactly perfect on every bike so that's okay we're gonna make it work i'm gonna have to just can't quite get the hole lined up to get it started we got it bolted up i had to jockey that thing around but it's all good it worked out so now we're running the wires this i think we're good now we're going to run the rest of these wires where they need to go after we read those instructions all right all right guys so now we got our wires run up here i'm gonna come up here and it says to run these down the clutch cable towards the starter and then these are gonna go so these wires are for the ac wires they're going to charge the battery that goes to right here air box is looking pretty good um we'll get the battery that'll make a big difference when we get the battery in there um as to where all this stuff goes but you know these are obviously negative wires and we got two positive wires i think there we go yep there's the other positive wire i don't know what this wire goes to so figure that out might be to a ground pretty happy with the wiring the way that's running right now uh now i think it's time to get the flywheel ready and get it on all right guys now it's time to put the flywheel on and the instructions say to install the flywheel uh check the um installed gap on the pulser coil to this little nub in here to make sure um that uh it's uh under 0.75 millimeters they're actually saying that 0.5 millimeters is the is the best and then kick it to make sure it's sparked so we're gonna do that um and then we take it back off to install the ring gear on it all right so we've got to make that insta make sure this gap right here let me show you this is the installed gap that they're talking about between this on this piece and this nub in here needs to be less than 0.75 millimeters which is really small so get our feeler gauges out 0.533 millimeter filter gauge all right that feels good now let's magnetize so you gotta be kind of careful like he don't just chuck it in there so oh yeah it feels great because you're gonna get some drag no matter what so feel good about that now i'm gonna check and make sure it's sparked sweet it sparks super stoked now i gotta pull this off so again the sprag clutch is down in here and what this doing they've machined these holes line up and it just slides right on there just perfect it comes with a tool all right so now we're going to take this we're going to slide it back on and this is actually the nut that holds the thing to the crankshaft so um let's come over here all right i'm actually gonna put this on without this i can make sure that i like that all right it's lined up good now line these up all right i feel good about that now take our bearing and we're going to take this and we're going to come in here and it's going to start to thread on there we go there we go 50 pounds make sure this still spins and it does all right guys time to put the workhorse part of this thing onto this motorcycle so there we go comes with a new gasket they say to put silicone on the rubber boot to uh just like we did to keep the oil from draining out of where the wires go now we're gonna put a little bit on this so that it seals up really good here we'll get this started there we go so there's a bearing in here that's why that's not going on it's a little bit hard to get in there there's a bearing in this cover that then holds that nut that's holding the flywheel on to keep it all in line so it doesn't move around like that so i think we got her that bottoms out so that must not be where that goes as with everything guys just work around it and don't freaking tighten anything down all the way until you get them all at least kind of snug we'll look up what the torque expects supposed to be on these so here's how this thing works if you look up in here there's the starter gear and it's going to spin and when it spins its gears hit this gear right here and then that transfers power to these other gears see that and those other gears are the ones that hit this so i like that that's moving like it's supposed to all right guys so i've been fighting with the figuring out where these bolts go because in the instructions it says to use the north like these ones that are five mil you know headed ones in this one four mil it's a little bit longer and i couldn't figure out what's going on because all the holes are the same depth uh so it was cool i emailed sebastian the guy i think he's the owner of panthera and he got right back to me immediately said they messed up um they make a carbon fiber guard for this and i guess that carbon fiber guard requires this one longer thing but they messed up and didn't send the ones that didn't order the carbon fiber guard with this so i'm gonna do is i'm gonna chop that thing down to this size of the grinder and then i got a cool tool i want to try and show you guys here in just one second all right i like that now let me show you this sweet new tool that i just got i'm really excited to try out because if you look at that i don't know there we go look at that that's not going to thread into any kind of hole um but the macko guy sold me this thing that goes into a drill and you put it on here and it cuts that down makes it chamfered nice chalk it up it's in the vise real fast come in here good that thing's cool putting all these in there all right guys got all the cover bolts uh bolted down 90 inch pounds um they tell you to check sure check and make sure this is still spinning clockwise it is won't spin counterclockwise unless you turn the motor over it's now gonna reinstall the cover with the gears all right so got everything ready to go everything's good to go getting ready to put the cover back on and now this is where they want you to put um some oil 250 milliliters or 250 cc same thing into this as well so we need to put 250 cc's it's almost at 500 so we'll go down to like 250 left and we'll be good and i'm pretty sure that the amount of that isn't super duper critical as long as you're close um it's just a splash up and around on the sprag clutch and all the gears um you know this gear the gear that goes in from the cover all that stuff to make sure that it's lubed and doesn't have any problems like the ktm ones did when they were brand new those things were hoarded so they had all kinds of problems so yeah i think we're good put this cover back on um and then i'll look at the rest of the instructions but i think we're getting pretty close um i've got the positive wire hooked up i got to figure out where to hook the negative wire up i'm not sure where they want us to do that yet i haven't figured that out uh then we'll put the pipe back on it and eventually put the tank and we'll try to start it like i said i don't have the right battery yet so we'll just hook the normal battery up to it somehow some way with jumper cables or something just to check and make sure it works all right guys got the wiring all done to the starter pretty cool so obviously the positive goes up here to the starter like most starters the negative that's pretty neat to have it coming down around back up underneath and bolting to the starter um to the chassis so i think that's gonna be good i'm gonna put the skid plate back on right now uh and then gonna start working on the tank and see how that goes make sure the biggest thing i'm concerned about is all these extra wires right up in here so i wanna make sure that they're tucked out of the way and aren't gonna be getting pinched or rubbing weird or anything like that because i'm sure if i just slide it on there right now it'll be just fine um it's the fact that i don't want it to have problems in the future so um we got to make sure we get it all dialed in and then i'm going to hit the button so see how this tank goes if i run any like little snags or anything like that i'll check in uh otherwise we'll get get this thing starting all right guys so i got the tank on it i got everything set up i got a battery sitting here this is not the right battery for it i have the right battery coming uh it'll be here very soon hopefully tomorrow the next day uh it's a little anti-gravity super thin high output lithium guy but i hooked this one up just to check everything make sure everything's working um so a couple things guys uh when i first hooked it all up and hit the button literally nothing happened like no click no nothing i was like ah you gotta be kidding me so all right whatever figure it out so i started fiddling with things and trying to find things out and i emailed sebastian up at panthera i think they're closed they're on the east coast so he didn't get back to me um so i took things apart i started um i took the starter out i put power to it it spun um like just direct power direct 12 volts eight or 12 volts dc to it this is fun took the you know the gears the kind like whatever you'd call them i don't know i guess they'd be uh like differential gear took those out um checked it everything spun okay great uh put it all back together i hit the button still nothing but then i just jumped the wires where the button would touch and it spun it i was like okay there we go so then i took the button off hit the button's no good and the button they sent me looked like a really nice one like it was all good but no no dice so i got my own button uh wired that in kickstarted the bike made sure it was actually going to start and yeah i think we're good to go so there's a few things that it's going to take some kind of fiddling with um but watch this [Music] so the button's just hanging here right now but it goes now um you do have to give a little gas that might be take some carburetor tuning to get that dialed in um and then i think once i get the right battery in there will be good i checked the charging and it's a little low uh it's not really charging uh very strong it's like 12 6 12 7. um i'd like to see 13 and a half 14 something like that when i rub it um but it stays there it doesn't go below that even at idle so um i'm gonna look at the regular rectifier it's got one of the ones from baja designs it looks like that you can maybe adjust so might be able to tune that up a little bit get a little more juice coming to the battery um but it's definitely charging it because at first the battery when i was fiddling with the thing initially i killed the battery trying to start it um and you know because i kept hitting it a couple times anyway so i think we're on the way i'm really excited i'm gonna actually end this video here because uh there's some other stuff like it's definitely leaking some oil out of the ignition cover um i put the silicone in like they said to but maybe i didn't get it in there right or in the right way but i got to figure that out and like i said i got to get that button mounted up i got to figure out the charging and all that stuff but so far so good um yeah i know a lot of you guys are going to chime in here it's 1250 bucks that's a lot of money to not have it just work right away um but i'm also one of the very first people to get one of these things so i get it it's part of the deal you know you buy something this new uh this untested really in the big world it's probably gonna happen so i'm not upset panthera thank you so much i'm really excited about the potential uh let me show you guys kind of what it looks like um it doesn't really stick out much more than anything else um it's maybe right here a little bit out but like the skid plate i think is gonna cover it from any big things obviously something could hit it here but you know that's just part of the deal pipe will help protect that first video guys in the series of the panthera motorsports e-start for a yz250 so far i'm gonna give it a thumbs up because it is working i like the quality there are some bugs that we're gonna have to work out um but that's okay that's how anything new is gonna be um yeah i hope you guys enjoy this comment below what you think i will definitely get the next video up as soon as i get the right battery i get the oil leak solved we can go take this thing out and actually test it out in the real world so hope you guys like that i hope you guys get outside the gospel two wheels and i desperately hope that what we're doing here testing things showing you guys how to work on stuff i hope all of that is inspiring you guys to work on and get out and ride your dirt bikes
