hello ladies and gents welcome to another repair video today we're going to be working on this xbox one x which has been sent in and this particular console has no power so the customer got in touch and he sent two consoles in total there was this one and a playstation 4 with a blue light of death uh this particular console he said he's attempting to change the power supply and the console still doesn't work so i thought i'd do a quick video on it i've already disassembled it just to save a little bit of time on the video the remaining screws are in an envelope for the xbox one x and one of the reasons i've disassembled it is because the customer's details he's on he's on the console he's left a little sticker with his details on so i didn't want to risk showing that on screen so i basically just disassembled the priority pressing record so i've already tested this and found out that it's completely no pillar so it's completely dead i do hear the feet when i press when i clip the paper cable in and that's normally an indication that the power supply is working so let's try and turn it on and as you can see there we got no pair at all the buttons on the left-hand side because when the console's inside the case it's flipped upside down so when it's facing this way it's on the left-hand side but as you can hear there's nothing happening there's no beeps there's nothing going on with the console whatsoever and it appears to be completely dead now i don't believe that i've got a video on the channel for this particular issue for the xbox one x and the most common cause of null power on an xbox one x when it's not the power supply which i will confirm i'll try another power supply so i've got the customers on the power supply here but just in case he's got really unlucky and he bought a faulty power supply or he's trying a faulty power supply i'm going to try my own power supply out of my own console which is a known good xbox one x power supply so that one is just there so this got this power supply here i know 100 works and if it doesn't turn on with this power supply then i'm not 100 that is not a power supply issue so let's just plug this in there we go let's connect up the cable and let's try and turn it on and we get nothing at all when we try and press the power button so it's not a power supply issue that is 100 confirmed because this power supply 100 works so the most common cause of no power on an xbox one x when it's not the power supply is going to be the hdmi v timer chip and that sounds a little bit strange but it's just the way it is when the hdmi timer chip dies on the xbox one x i'm not sure what's different between that one and the xbox one s counterpart but when it dies on the xbox one x it tends to cause no power a lot of the time and not a lot of people realize this that it's going to be down to the re-timer chip so they automatically go out and buy a new power supply they'll automatically go out and try and figure out what's wrong with it without ever looking at the hdmi circuit itself so let's just get the heatsink clamp off here and we can get to the re-timer chip because the re-timer is underneath the clamp and then what i'll do is i'll try changing it i will try and attempt to check for shorts on the retimer chip but most of the time when it dies it doesn't show any signs of dying so it doesn't show any sign of shorts it doesn't show any signs of any kind of issue at all it just dies and it causes no power so i'm kind of hoping that this is the case on this one because they're usually nice and easy to fix when we've got no power so i'll just try replacing it and it should usually fix the issue but i thought i'd do a video on it because i don't think i've done one on the channel for this particular issue in the past you might notice the lack of a blue mat and that's because it's been washed i've attempted to put it into the washer as a few viewers have suggested and it didn't work so i've had to leave it to one side for now and just carry on working on some stuff so this heatsink has definitely been off before but the re-timer chip itself is just here and it's a tdp-158 that's the 4kv timer chip for the xbox one x and that's responsible for the audio and video signals but what people don't realize is that there's power going through the retimer chip itself as well and that causes a short on the main pair of rails i'm not sure what payroll is i'm not going to pretend i do know i just know that it causes a short one of the payroll rails or it causes some sort of issue with one of the payroll rails and that causes the console to refuse to turn on so before i look at the re-timer chip itself i'm just having a look at the hdmi port and that does actually look mean condition so if we get that to focus there you'll see it does look absolutely fine so again i'm not sure why this happens but from experience it does happen so let's pop under the microscope and we'll see if we can figure out what's going on we'll see if we can see any kind of shorts or anything like that but it's very dope i'll be honest it's very dateful that we're going to see any kind of visible signs or signs with the multimeter that we've got a problem with the retimer so if we take a look here we've got the hdmi port here this is the hdmi output port and if we follow along down the line we can see that we've got the retimer ic like i said this is the tdp158 it's marked as u29 on the xbox one x so what i'm going to do is i'm going to pop the multimeter into continuity mode and i'm going to see if i can find any kind of shorts on the hdmi timer area but even if i can't i'm still going to go ahead and replace this chip anyway because like i said it is the most common cause so to save time it's the first thing i always try replacing on this particular machine so with the multimeter in continuity mode that's the mode that beeps when we complete the circuit i'm going to pop one probe on ground and i'm going to use the hdmi port itself so just here i'm going to put one probe there i'm going to test the input side of these capacitors and just see if we can find any kind of short so we should hear a beep if this is shorter to ground and no beeping so far and nope still no beeping so no signs of a short to ground let's check the u21 which is the esd i see these dies then we're in trouble because we can't buy them so if this fails then we're in a bit of trouble but other than that it should be fine and we've got no signs of a short to ground on u21 let's check the emi filters themselves and see if there's a shorter ground on them uh the middle emi filters are going to be ground so if you pop one probe there you can hear it be one probe there you can hear it beep we shouldn't hear a beep on any of these other lines here so let's just check those and no beeps so let's check these pins on the hdmi port pin number 17 is ground and no visible signs of a short at all as i expected but we're not going to find any signs of shorts anyway uh it just never shows a sign so i'm going to try replacing the hdmi and colder oc anyway the re-timer tube so to remove the chip i've got the hot air set to 480 degrees celsius my airflow is actually a little bit hot at the moment so i'm going to drop that back down to 50 percent and that was a little bit stuck on there which kind of gives me an indication that it probably was faulty maybe it was a little bit stuck on there so i'll just pop that back in position because it did slip out suddenly so just pop that component back in position there and then when i put some flux on it will flow itself back into place okay so here's a replacement chip so i've just taken this off a donor board but i know this is good this chip is virtually brand new it's just i installed it on the donor board when i was trying to fix it so i'm going to tap that in place there so the chip is brand new it's just that it's been installed on the board and the board it was installed on was a donut board so basically it's a brand new chip it's just been pre-installed on another board okay so let's just flow this into place with flux in um this component here as well this capacitor that will flow itself in as well and now just to make sure it's soldered correctly i'm going to add some more flux and then i'm just going to resold out the joints now i seem to be missing a capacitor here so i'll get one of them almost to knock that off with the iron never mind i can replace that that's not a big deal there we go and that components replaced okay let's give it a test okay so before we give it a test i just want to give it a little clean with some isotopic alcohol and a cotton swab then i'm going to pop the heatsink back on just to sort out this thermal paste here okay so i'm not going to replace the thermal paste yet and the reason for that is because if i do have to take it back apart i'm going to have to replace it again so what i'll do is i'll just check and see if it turns on if it turns on then i'll turn it straight back off and replace the thermal paste there we go um this is one of the customers power supplies let's plug it back in try and turn it on there we go yes it's turning on okay so that's fantastic so it looks like the no pair of issue was indeed caused by the retimer ic which is like i said most common cause it is the most common cause and i'm glad i kind of made a video on it now because it at least shows that it is possible to have an old pair issue with the re-timer i say i've done it on live stream a few times but i've never recorded a video on it so i'm kind of glad that i did but what i'll do is just to prove that the retimer that i put on there was good and i know it was good because like i said i installed that v timer on that xbox one x donor board a couple of weeks ago and that's the donor board there and i believe the console works but it doesn't update so uh yeah it's uh it's gonna be fine it's a brand new tip okay so what i'm going to do now then is just clean up the apu get rid of the old thermal paste off there replace the thermal paste and then i'll reassemble it enough for testing just to confirm that it turns on and displays on the screen and then i'll be happy to be done okay and let's not forget to remove the thermal paste off here as well okay um let's grab some thermal paste and get this thing assembled enough for testing so nice amount of mx4 there and let's pop the heating clamp back on there we go let's get the chassis here so this is the customer's hard drive so we did send the complete console but like i said i disassembled it before the start of the video so all i'm going to do is just put it back together enough to be able to test it and that's it just keep the recording down to a minimum just to save a little bit of time because it does take me longer when i'm recording a video okay okay i'm going to leave that loose for the time being because i need to screw it in from the bottom to be able to get it to stay in place so what i'll do is just basically connect up the hdmi port connect up the power supply let's take the front panel and we'll pop the y4 panel in as well there we go and let's turn it on and it comes on i'm spinning come on there we go awesome okay let's switch over to the capture card xbox logo that's fantastic so that means that this console should be fully working now so let's just give it a quick test let's just make sure that it does actually work that it loads a game and boots into the dashboard properly so and connect up my controller to a usb there we get we do get the dashboard so that's good news so let's try and pop a disk in remember this is upside down so we put the disk in upside down and it should load up crash the disc is getting a little bit old now so it might not even load okay it doesn't appear to be loading a game all right so let me just hook up the eject button just so i can eject it okay so he's ejecting the disk which is fine so i'll just give the disk a little clean and i'll try it again all right so while i'm waiting i'm going to connect to the internet just to make sure that works sometimes it doesn't load the disk until you connect to the internet which is rather strange but it does that sometimes okay everything's good cool so now he's going to ask me to update no i'm not going to update and to be honest i've probably got to so it's going to make me update and i'm probably going to need to update to get it to read the disk so i have come into i have come across this before where i've had to update to be able to read the disk so what i'll do is i'll let it update and then i will test the disk drive make sure all of that works and then we'll be good to go so i'll pause the video for now i'll resume in a second and there we go so this is successfully updated itself so as you can see here as well it's also loading crash bandicoot insane trilogy which i kind of expected because sometimes until you get until you update it it doesn't actually show you that the disk is installed uh it's a little bit weird it's a software thing on microsoft side but this console appears to be working so i'm happy so let's just summarize on this then so this console was sent in because it had no power and as i expected it was nothing to do with the power supply it was down to the hdmi re-timer i see which is a common cause of no pair on the xbox one x but by replacing the re-timer we're able to restore the power and this console appears to be working absolutely fine so that's going to be it for this video thank you very much for watching if you do have any comments or questions leave them down in the comment section down below i will
