[Music] hello and welcome to my youtube video in this video I'm going to demonstrate how to work a short row heel in a sock this short row heel can work be worked toe up or cuff down so this is in a little pattern that I have available on Ravelry and love knitting it's called undulant it's a cute little sock pattern has a short row heel this is the same sock but with a contrasting color for the cuff heel and toe it's in the same pattern and you can see the area where the short row heel is notice there are no holes where the short row heel joins to the body of the sock I show you how to do that in this video so that you do it's a perfect join there at the corner this is another example of the same pattern in a different yarn with the short row heel so let's get to it let me show you how to do that ok so I've got my little sample here I have there's 36 stitches on both needles so I have 18 on each needle we're gonna work the heel the short row heel on this needle when you work a short row heel you're going to be working back and forth so rather than working in the round like we have been for the body of the sock you're going to now be working flat back and forth across this needle and we're going to be working short rows so I like to divide it into thirds or near thirds first and put some pins on here so I've got 18 stitches so that means I've got 2 4 6 and I can put a removable stitch marker here and then another 2 4 6 and 1 here and that relieves 6 out here so we've divided into thirds the short row wraps are going to be out on the edges here after the markers and in between the markers there will not be any short rows so let's get started I'm gonna pull my work up on to the needle and we'll start by making our first short row so I'm just going to knit all the way to the other end of the needle until there's one stitch remaining you until one stitch remains and we're going to wrap that stitch the way I wrap stitches is I first I slip the stitch temporarily to the right needle bring the yarn forward or back doesn't matter opposite of where it is slip the stitch back now the yarn is around that the base of that stitch turn the work now we're going to be doing a wrong side row and we're going to work back and a purl back until there's one stitch remaining at the other end now I'm doing this continent doesn't really matter whether you're throwing our continental the process is exactly the same you okay now we're on a purl side so the yarns in the front already because I'm purling so again I just slipped the stitch first temporarily move the yarn to the other side and slip the stitch back now the yarns going around the neck of that stitch turn the work so that's a wrap and turn what we just did there is called wrap and turn W and T now you want to keep this tight not super tight but tight and we're going to work until one stitch before the previous wrapped stitch you so here's our wrapped stitch and I'll show you how we can identify we're not going to work it we're going to work up until one stitch before the wrapped stitch there's one stitch left before the wrap stitch the wrapped stitch you can see the wrap going around the neck of it they're like a little necklace so then we're going to slip this stitch over bring the yarn forward slip the stitch back and now it's wrapped and turn so now we have two wrapped stitches on this end and we're holding the yarn firmly there and we're going to work back this way until there's one stitch remaining before the wrapped stitch you okay now there's one stitch before the wrapped stitch on the purl side it's hard to see the wrapped you see that it just looks like a purl bump so I'll show you a different way to recognize that in us when we come back to this next time so I'm wrapping it put it back and then turn so wrap and turn so now what we're going to do is we're going to keep doing that we're going to work over to here until one stitch remains before the wrapped stitch and we're going to wrap that stitch we're going to go back and forth doing the same thing so you can see here that when a stitch is wrapped it pulls it up close to the stitch right before it and it leaves a gap after it so it's easy to identify the last wrap stitch it's right there same on this end we can't tell yet but when we get over a little bit I'll show you how to identify that one too so I'm going to just go real quick to the end over here you okay we can see that this is the last wrapped stitch there it's kind of pulled in so we're going to wrap the stitch before it now we have three wrap stitches on that in turn we can see the three wrapped stitches and we're going to work back and I'll speed this up you now we're coming up on the previously wrapped stitch here's one here's two and we can see there's the gap there so this stitch is the next one that's going to be wrapped the one right before the previous wrap stitch which is this stitch so we bring this stitch to the right needle temporarily wrap it put it back and turn our work I'm going to continue doing this until I have wrapped all of the stitches up to the stitch markers and then I'll be right back okay I'm back and I'm ready to do the last wrap on each side of the marker but I wanted to show you first how these are looking from the right side of the fabric you can see the wrap around the base of each stitch this stitch does not have a wrap around it that's the one we're going to do next and here's the ones on the other side you can see the wrap around the stitch so let's finish off the last two wrap the short rows are usually worked in pairs a right side and a wrong side so like right now I'm doing a right side row and I'm going to work over to the point where I'm going to wrap the stitch which will be the last one and you can see that spaces between the wraps this one is not wrapped so we know it needs to be wrapped I'll turn the work some people knit back backwards I'm not proficient at that but if you are this is a good time to do that so I'm just going to work back to the network on the second one the right side was the first this is the second row it's always worked in pairs or generally worked in pairs so here's our last stitch to wrap and then when we turn we're done with half of the heel so what we've done is we've added a lot of fabric let's see if we put this out here we can see that we have created all of this fabric so these stitches are along this edge these are here in the middle the middle six stitches are longer so we have half of a heal right now that's half of our heal and these are called shortening short rows are decreasing short rows each row is shorter shorter shorter shorter till you get them all in there now what we're going to be doing is lengthening short rows so we're going to be starting at this point we'll be able to take our stitch markers off we're going to work over to the first wrapped stitch on this side which is right after the stitch marker and take the stitch marker off now we're going to do what's called conceal we're going to conceal the wrapped stitch that means we're going to take the wrap we're going to take our right needle up through it through the stitches if to knit grab the yarn and pull it through both and when we do that it pops the wrap over to the back side of that stitch and you'll see it on the wrong side of the work it will not be visible on the right side of the work then we're going to wrap the next stitch because we're making a short row and we're going to turn and now we're on the wrong side these are also worked in pairs so we're going to work until we come to the first wrap stitch and it is right here this is a regular stitch you can see how this has a little wrap around it's very hard to see when you're looking at the wrong side of the fabric but this is the wrap around the necklace of the stitch around the neck of the stitch it's like a necklace so we're going to conceal that wrap now the way we can seal the wrap on the wrong side row is you pick up the back part of the wrap put it up on to the left needle and purl them together as one then you're going to wrap the next stitch so it's now has two wraps around it just like the one on the other side that we just did a minute ago and we're going to work back now so now this stitch is has two wraps it has this wrap from the shortening short rows and it's got this wrap from the lengthening short rows and we're going to work back across easy to identify there it is there's the two raps this is from the decreasing short rows this is from the lengthening sure was we're going to take our needle tip the right needle tip go under both the wraps through the stitch grab the yarn and pull it through and both of those wraps flip back to the backside of the stitch then we're going to wrap the next stitch so you conceal one and then wrap the very next one now we're going to work back on the wrong side row you this is the previous one that we concealed and you can see how the rap flipped to the back side and here is the rap stitch and it has two raps it has this rap and this rep and we're going to pick them up from this side these are the two that we're going to pick up and put on the needle we're gonna pick up this rap and this rap and the way you do it is when you're holding the work with the wrong side facing you take your right needle tip and dip it down put the one wrap on the needle dip it down you just scoop up the back and it'll scoop up the other rap and then you put it's like purling three together so you just scoop them up from the back side then we're going to do a wrap and turn now I'm going to do a few more till we have one left and then I'm going to show you how to close the gap at the corners of the heel so you don't end up with a hole at your gusset I'll be back in a minute okay now we have one unconcealed double wrap stitch at each end we're going to deal with those now so I'm going to work over to the wrapped stitch I'm going to conceal it and then I'm going to wrap the first stitch on the other needle and that's what's going to prevent a hole forming where the heel joins the body of the sock okay so here's our last wrap stitch and we can see there's a wrap way down here and one here and we need to get both of those go through both of those and the stitch itself and pull the yarn through and this one can be a little bit tricky now all of the stitches have been concealed and we are going to you'll end up with this gap here but what we're okay we have worked all of the double wraps here and we would normally be ready to join back in the round but you'll find that you get a hole right here we don't want a hole right there so the way I fix that is I place the heel stitches on the cable it's not on the needle I slip the first stitch I have the needle the heel needle here this is the instep needle I just slip this stitch temporarily to the heel needle bring the yarn forward slip it back so I'm wrapping that stitch I pull this needle out I turn I pull the heel needle up into action so now I have wrapped the first stitch on the instep needle and I'm going to use my heel needle not the instep needle and I'm going to work back across the heel and I'm going to pull this really tight between there between the wrap and the first stitch I'm pulling it very tight for the first two stitches and that's what's going to prevent the hole from forming you got to conceal the wraps on this last heel stitch here we've got our two wraps so we're going to bring those up onto the needle both of them and knit them purl them together with that last stitch now we have the potential gap here this is where the instep needle and the heel needle see there's a big gap there we don't want the gap so we're going to put the heel needle on to the cable slide the instep needle up into action slip we have our working yarn let me make the picture bigger now slip the first stitch temporarily to the right needle move the yarn between the two stitches and slip the stitch back pull this onto the cable now we have our working yarn here's our heel here's our heel our working yarn is coming from the other needle because it's wrapped this stitch right there see it's right and we can pull it together like that that's what closes the gap so now we're going to knit around we're back to knitting in the round now and I'll show you how to conceal those last two wraps over on the instep needle so we're still on the heel needle this is the very last part of the heel we're just going to knit across we're pulling that really tight at that corner to put it so we don't have a big hole there this is what prevents the hole at the corner of the short row heel I just use two circulars or you can use Magic Loop now the heel is done we're moving the heel needle onto the cable we turn over to the instep needle and I'm going to pull the instep needle up into action I'm going to grab the other end of the instep needle so the heel needle is all out here and the instep nielsie they don't interact with each other I have the instep needle here this first stitch was slipped it has the it was wrapped and this is where it's hard some people have a really hard time picking up a wrap when it's going around the stitch this way you do the same thing you just come up under the wrap go through the stitch as if to knit pull the yarn through both make a new stitch and the wrap gets pushed back to the back side of the stitch and then you work all the way across the instep to the last wrapped stitch you so here we come we've got that wrapped stitch there see go through the stitch take them off put them back on in the reverse stitch mount so it's easier to grab the yarn and pull it through so now it's like an SSK one more round and then we'll take a look at it this is the heel you I also have a video on how to do German short row heels same techniques everything here only you're doing German short rows instead of wrap and turn I'll put a link to that up in the corner up there okay let's take a look and see what we've got so we've got our little sock here there's our heel from the side I just did a little short cuff there's the heel here's the instep there's no hole there's all of our short row turns there's no hole where it joins over on this side no hole where it joins we just have our short row turns everything's together the hole would be right here so if you enjoy my videos be sure to give me a thumbs up subscribe to my youtube channel if you hit the little bell after you subscribe you'll get notifications when I send out a new video this particular one is in conjunction with a sock pattern called undulant the sock I showed at the beginning of the video and this is part of that the tutorial for that sock pattern I hope you come back and join me for more videos and we'll see you next time happy knitting
