hello i am teacher aubry and welcome back to my channel [Music] in today's video we are going to talk about the different uses of the modal verbs would and could as well as the should so if you find yourself confused when and how to use them this video is perfect for you many are confused when to use the modal verbs could or would yes let's begin modal verb what is a modal verb modal verb is an auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility in the english language we have different modal verbs such as shall well would could must can might or may but in this lesson we will just be focusing on the three which are the wood could and why because these are three modal verbs good wouldn't it be language users and learners so we will just be focusing in these three let us now jump right into it firstly let's have the could versus would tense when we say past tense let's have here for the code [Music] [Music] and when we see ken it talks about ability [Music] let's look at the past tense form of will and then for the past tense of can and would for the past tense of will let us now move on to the second use of the modal verbs could and would we use the modal verb could to talk about possible situations when we say possible situations for the first example we have it could rain tonight maybe i went outside the house i looked at the sky and then i saw now between so there's a possibility now so i said that it could rain tonight on the second example lisa didn't attend the meeting she could be busy lisa did attend the meeting she could be busy because it also talks about possibility you see it talks about possibility it's no longer the past tense of the modal verb ken saw it already pertains about the possible situations now let's take a look at these phrases we have here would rain it would rain when we are going to talk about possible situations always remember could okay now let's move on to this if you are talking about imaginary situations it would rain tonight why because we talk about possible situation but if we are going to talk about imaginary situation when we say imaginary imagination let's take a look at the examples if i had much hard he would get a better position if zion worked hard he would get a better position [Music] now let us move on to the third and last use of the modal verbs could and would in which we are using couldn't would for polite expressions we have different polite expressions such as if we would like to make a request to give a permission to make an offer and uh let's take a look at these polite
