this is the final of the women's 3000 meter steeplechase without doubt the greatest field ever assembled all this event a real sense of anticipation here in the stadium the reigning Olympic champion the defending world champion the Commonwealth champion European champion and world junior champion absolutely everybody you would want in this race is here ready to do battle [Applause] and this really could be a very special showdown this is the lineup for the final of the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase one non-starter fen - who fell in the water jump and has decided not to take her place in the lineup despite making it as a fastest loser what a race and what a showdown the best field we have ever seen Yaffe on the outside sixth in Rabat Genevieve lekars their case of krauser got a bronze in Beijing then checked coetc Paul in Rio last year she's the third fastest in the world in 2017 next to her Ruth Trebek the world record holder and the Olympic champion but has she recovered from the injury sustained falling in Paris and a Coburn fabulous bronze in Rio could she become the first American woman to Willam win a World Championship steeplechase medal at Jeunesse Dero just missed the podium in Moscow Friedrichs of the USA I've enjoyed the defending world champion the Olympic silver medalist the second fastest athlete in the world this year purity Carew II is the Commonwealth champion and on the inside is it destined to be the day of the 18 year old teenager cellophane chairs poles reigning world junior champion she became the second fastest athlete in history with an incredible run in new team even though she had to stop to put her shoe back on after the water jump an absolutely loaded field this is the 3000 meter steeplechase Park so this is the final and it looks as though it will be fast in the early stages here they are not hanging around and there's a real opportunity for one or two of these women but who is going to seize the chance check courage is leading at the moment just pushing ahead now and as Rob said what a star-studded field this is including the youngest ever competitor at these championships Wilfred Wilfred Jerry who runs for Bahrain so the young competitor has got a lot to live up to because this really is one of the best feels you could possibly assembled so chip coetc leads Chuck komoi is the defending champion in second yavi is the 17-year old Steve was talking about chebet is the Olympic champion she's talking to her kampachi at yardie both of them representing Bahrain chairs tal the fastest woman in the world this year is the Kenyan with the short hair she's running on the left of your picture they're quite happy just to take things steady towards the very back of the field we break away for prom Caen in the fifth round of the hammer [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] real drama in the steeplechase because the athletes didn't realize they needed to cut inside for the water jump that's jet coach the third-fastest athlete in the world this year who then had to double back and she has lost a massive amount of ground what a shame for her you can see her just in the background beginning to close and we've had a whole host to fall us there it's happening all over the track and suddenly we have a group of six split to the left-hand side incredible drama there and it's yeah be leading from chebet the to Bahrain Ian's the defending champion is there the fastest woman in the world this year is there and ship coach is still trying to close the gap and all of a sudden steep the field is split yeah well also that's given a charge for the likes of code when the American there who's just tucked in the inside but the drama that at the moment it was a lot of pushing and shoving going on that that water jump which feels the first confusion I think after that it was a little bit more over the back straight so really at the moment this field a split not because of the race but because of the technique of some of these women 302 at 1000 meters so they're moving quite nicely here it's the Olympic championship vet who leads from the RV chairs called the world junior champion with jet from oil on her shoulder and both Americans have made this league group the bronze medalist is on the inside there Emma Coburn a fine fine run in Rio Grande for Eric's second in the national championships she is in sixth place as chip coach who went the wrong way now closes down so six becomes seven in this league group what a run from chip couch to come back into this race after that disaster at the water jump but Japan knows what she's gonna do it is the world record hold up she knows that if there's fortune behind if she pushes it on it's gonna be good for her well we've had callers we've had leading athletes going the wrong way but it's chebet who is in front at the moment the Olympic champion the world record holder tracked by chess poll they have had some incredible races this year and dear oh well veering towards her left hand side there dear Oh who was fifth in Moscow and here in London five years ago that's curry the Commonwealth champion she's struggling but we're not quite so surprised about that because she only made it through to the final as a fastest loser much about pushing it on drop doing a special ecad now to make this really an honest steeplechase and the gap is winding between that group of what is it six athletes there and the rest I think there was an altercation over the back straight though which caused a lot of problems for that second group they got too caught up in the falling of some of the athletes in front of them and stumbled and that's the problem the two Americans slightly drifting off the pace now verax and Coburn as the pace is now becoming quite relentless roof chebet has decided to take this on and really go for it she leads chairs Paul in second chess Paul by the way bidding to become the third youngest world champion in history she's not long turned 18 and is still the reigning world junior champion not too many athletes have held the world senior and junior title at the same time one or two but only very very special athletes karani James in 2011 having won the juniors in turn and Karolina Clift won the heptathlon I think in Paris having won the juniors in Kingston in 2002 and she bets really pouring this on Steve she is but chip couch has come back now and we saw her as you say go round the wrong way in the water job come back she's now in third in this race which is a remarkable comeback really and still the two Americans hanging on to this group at the moment it's been an extraordinary race and she's picked the place up three minutes for that kilometer well bear in mind only one woman so far this year chairs pollen second has gone inside nine minutes this season and when she did she produced the second fastest time in history so jus vet the Olympic champion the world record holder does look as though she has recovered from that fall earlier this season she leads from chairs bowl then we have chip Kovac and a defending champion jeka Moy still there on the left of picture and so to his Coburn the Olympic bronze medalist from last year JEP Tomoya just gave a quick look to the inside there and check check check couch I think she knows that perhaps tip courage had a bit of a problem she just chickens if she's really suffering a lot but she's still running well in fact chip coach I think it's going to go round out her teammate and just come onto the shoulder of Jabez coburn trying to close down that gap on gee bet there is the Olympic champion she is really asking the questions of these women and it's just Paul now beginning to struggle with this place she's the fastest woman in the world this year and a youngster is finding this too hard to live with and that is a surprise [Applause] well coburn looking very good the American coming now round I think it is kept coach maybe there she is the big American the outside looking very very strong and they were coming to the bell lap so this is going to be some race over the last 400 meters they take the bell in the final of the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase five athletes still in contention Beatrice Djokovic is out front schibetta knee Olympic champion is on her shoulder Colburn is right there and the defending world champion Jack Boyd coming up on to the outside and free ryx the other American no American woman's ever finished on the podium and she bet the Olympic champion the world record holder is gone so five become four two canyons two Americans her earrings up onto the shoulder of komoi Giacomo is the defending champion : infer that she was in Rio and shep coach is beginning to struggle what a story this would be if Coburn could win this jocularly struggled at that water jump and look at Emma : this is an incredible performance by the American no medal by an American woman in this event and somehow she's found the acceleration and the Coburn becomes the world champion in one of the biggest shocks in women's distance running four years three ryx takes the silver and the defending champion Czech boy the bronze for so many years we have seen the Kenyans dominate this event we have never in history male or female steeplechase running seen Americans produce a one-two that was simply extraordinary but no not at European or non African steeplechase it has ever got a medal in this event this was a incredible performance from Coburg it really was she's run one of the fastest times of the year is what it wasn't slow she's come home in nine to 59 absolutely fantastic that puts her up at about fifth on the old of the Sonia's fastest times they're crying Steve because they can't the leaving and neither can the Kenyans Emma Colburn championship record three ryx personal bests both of them inside the pre-existing national record they absolutely demolished the Olympic champion the defending world champion and the quickest women in the world this year have succumbed to the Americans that's the fifth fastest time of ever produced in a steeplechase and to do it here in the World Championship final against the best bill that's ever been assembled is absolutely fantastic the Americans were really quite superb here they took it all the way they didn't give us an inch and I at last water chase Tobin came through the insight and she just did not come through they just pushed and pushed and pushed check Kamui's technique over that last water jug really cost her some momentum but look at this she's pulling away from the rest of the field three ryx with the race of her life free ryx by the way has taken almost 16 seconds 16 seconds of her lifetime best the Olympic champion was fifth chess for the world junior champion the fastest woman in the world this year was 6th and shipped coach who went the wrong way early on she finished in four well Steve this is turning out to be a fantastic championship for the Americans they've had plenty of one choose but never in a million years were they or us but for a one two would come into women's 3,000 meter steeplechase Wow I almost have to say this twice gold and silver for the United States in the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase it is the first global gold for the United States in this event for 65 years one American man won the Olympics in Helsinki in 52 it's an incredible incredible result for the Americans Emma Coburn is the world champion in a championship record a national record three ryx taking almost 16 seconds from a lifetime vest a pv for her well inside the pre-existing United States national record check her more the defending champion down in third the Olympic champion and world record holder in fifth [Applause]
