are located at seven bullfinch place in boston's government center wnev tv is owned and operated by the new england television corporation [Music] so [Music] good morning i'm mike taibi it is daybreak on the 22nd of may 1982. and it is indeed the dawn of a new day both in broadcasting history and in boston and new england history but this is the first day of on-air operations of new england television wnev tv and the group of people you see behind me are both employees and shareholders and principals in wne wnev and we're going to look talk to some of them now let's talk first now david mugar david you just uh hit the switch yes we did we're upstairs very good feeling mike long time getting here but we made it and everybody assumes a little bit tired but a little bit excited too exactly exactly bert lee vice president uh let's talk right now about uh some of the promises that have been made are you excited that everything can be done reasonably quickly well i don't know how quickly is quick but we will try to do the best we can okay ed you've got the little shareholder here with joyce and richard uh what are your feelings right now well my feelings are that we've come a long ways and we've crossed the threshold and what we have to do now is to plan and work as hard as we can to create a great television station it is already one of the best and we're going to work as hard as we can to make it better a lot of people have been waiting for this day nobody more i guess than the people who are in this group right now how long do you think it's going to take before people begin to identify with the new television station well i think it's going to be a process that's going to take from now perhaps into the fall as we get the people on board and we get our plans and see one new thing after another on the screen an assurance right now that we have in fact continued our affiliation with the cbs television network that's correct last tuesday we signed a two-year agreement with cbs to continue the affiliation and the new programming schedule will likely be in effect in the fall for the fall schedule right in the fall that's when you'll see the real uh results of a lot of work that's been going on for many years thank you very much we are right now standing outside the studios and there are a lot of people right now who can't wait to get inside the studios of wnev tv this is mike tyubie thank you for watching i hope you make it a habit of watching [Music] bring your new england special point of view wait till you see what we've got planned for you come this fall [Music] there's a new day donnie [Music] we're working this summer to make your seven prices [Music] the most satisfying thing about my work is knowing that you really touched someone help them in some way and that challenge is at the heart of the new seven spirit we want to be the best television station in the country and to do that you have to be committed to excellence and service like robin young she's never satisfied with less than her best we're making a lot of new plans at seven and i'm proud to be a part of it [Music] our job here is local news channel 7 cares about local news i care about local news i'm the assignment manager chuck gordon some of you people will be working for me it's a pressure job it calls for fast movement it calls for instant decisions and always keeping in mind that we must be accurate this is not a glamorous business it's not a job it's a profession and a profession brings with it a commitment we have two good anchors who are able to communicate with the viewer we are the support system for tom and robin we're all a family here as far as the product that we present we are doing one good job news 7 every day and every night so local news comes first with us always remember local news community interest and you can't go wrong [Music] getting to come back home and be a part of the new seven spirit is one of the most exciting and challenging opportunities i've ever had and i feel that same spirit everywhere i go here especially when people talk to me about the new new seven our goal is to bring new england the most aggressive and in-depth news coverage in the country that's a big challenge but when you get to team up with the best like tom ellis you know you're going to reach your goal [Music] and coming up next say you can't beat aim for fighting cavities well if everyone brushed like old bob here cavities could be an endangered species take aim against cavities regular and mint [Music] this is new england's leading news team tom ellis and robin young with news seven good evening everybody topping news seven tonight it's a brand new race for the democratic nomination for governor with just hours to go before that primary election our exclusive new seven counts poll shows governor king closing in fast on challenger michael dukakis in a dramatic last minute spurt the governor has almost caught up with the caucus who had a lead six months ago that seemed unbeatable and without lead now almost gone what happens tomorrow is anybody's guess when we receive that uh computerized polling information it's just numbers and statistics and here now to make sense of all of that is our political editor joe day to tell us exactly what those numbers mean well robin our latest news center seven counts poll done by cambridge reports strongly suggests that the race for the democratic nomination for governor is a virtual deadlock now if governor king does manage to pull out a victory tomorrow he will thank his multi-million dollar media campaign his core of support among conservative democrats but above all the fact that michael dukakis has not scored a knockout blow against him in recent days things are quiet and that also tends to benefit the man who's already in office i'm bill selby reporting live from the state house back to tom and robin thank you bill well the governor will be keeping up his last minute campaign push far into the night appearing at several political rallies in boston and then it's out of his hands and in the hands of his campaign organization who have the job of getting out the king vote tomorrow rival michael dukakis meanwhile is counting on his campaign organization to save him from losing again to king he's put together an army of thirty thousand campaign workers along with a computer system that will allow his workers to reach one million voters by primary day the candidate himself is leaving nothing to chance right now he's making a last-minute pitch to volunteers in charlestown and news 7's mike tybee is there live with more about that mike well tom i'm outside saying mary's parish hall in charlestown with a big weekly bingo game is about to get underway but a game for much higher stakes is being played outside that hall right now mike dukakis in the home stretch of his run to regain the corner office it is a run which most of the experts now agree is a toss-up and then 26 hours from now our new seven counts election unit will begin telling you and mike dukakis exactly how it all adds up reporting live from charlestown this is mike taibi tom thanks mike this will be a long night for dukakis too still ahead for him this evening three political rallies in boston robin well as we head into the final hours before the primary it's not just the democrats who are campaigning hard the republicans are pulling out all the stops and news 7's susan burke is here with us now with the latest on the last minute gop strategies robin with only 15 percent of the voters in massachusetts registered republicans you might have expected a rather quiet race for governor on the republican side but not so this time around as the three candidates john lakian john sears and state representative andrew card battle it out and we'll have the results tomorrow well susan they've spent the last year pinpointing just who those possible republican voters are and some of the last minute strategies of the gop candidates include plenty of phone calls to those voters that's right and there's a lot more election news tonight and later in this newscast we'll take a look at behind the scenes at one of the hottest and most controversial governors races in the commonwealth's history but next on news 7 new steps
