[Music] 23 year old rookie austin cendrick will start from the pole and he'll be joined by eric jones driving for richard petty having its first front row start since 2019 a ford and a chevrolet row two four-time california winner today's favorite kyle busch and denny hamlin three-time runner-up at this track how about road three right here daniel hamrick man it's colin they've been bringing the heat especially in qualifying and ryan blaney on his outside oh so close last week in daytona row four joey logano look at this two champions in row four with joey logano and chase elliott in row five on the inside is the six car brad kozlowski he's a 2015 winner here and he's a lot of action last week all around his car uh starting outside of him is the 24 of william byron row 11 on the inside is number eight of tyler reddick real strong car and outside of him is a 19 a martin truex jr who's a 2018 winner all right we'll have a look at the rest of the starting lineup across the bottom of your screen as pace laps continue the cars will get a chance to check pit road speed and we will have that competition caution at lap 20 to be able to check tire wear always a concern here [Music] let's get reports all the way from charlotte and it's closest pit road beginning with our crew chief larry mcreynolds well mike what i have to be today is a salesman you heard austin cedric talk about limited practice time i've been telling my driver all morning it's probably not going to drive that good at the beginning but i will make adjustments all day long based on your feedback and reagan smith my goal is not to make that race car drive perfect just drive better than everybody else's well there mack i think that's a great goal to have and kyle busch has had that race car better than everybody else four times before here california the track not a problem he knows every groove and every detail to this racetrack the car that's going to be the challenge today the team told me that kyle can dissect the car better than anybody in the field they feel that's going to be their biggest advantage to getting that fifth win jamie little well reagan if there's one driver who could win based on attitude alone it's brad keselowski despite all the uncertainties all the unknowns with this race car today he said he welcomes it he said this is what us drivers have always wanted a car that is hard to handle something we have to really work and steer the wheel and be aware of everything around you that's happening today he said the biggest challenge will be go slow to go fast and that's something mike drivers don't like to do slow down and take care of your equipment thanks jamie have a great sunny day down there on pit road everybody checking pit road speed something they did not have the opportunity to do during the brief 15-minute practice session that preceded qualifying yesterday now a lot of cars are going to the rear including kevin harvick crew chief rodney childers said he backed it into the wall he tore up the whole rear clip they said it took them less time to repair this car from yesterday's damage than it would have taken to change over the seat and everything else needed for harvick to run the organization's one backup car so he is on that list ross chastain had a problem crashed hard right front impact did not qualify everyone else for changes and adjustments so here's a california tradition of five wide charge around the racetrack to salute the fans before we go green i think this is more of a practice session because as soon as that rack drops it's probably what you're going to see getting off into turn one such a cool race track and to see these guys five wide man it looks cool what they really should do is just shut the lights off in the pace car coming off and turn forward and surprise them and throw the green we'd see a lot of action right off the bat see you can tell that's a guy that's already retired you're fitting in just fine now you're gonna fit right in you are such an instigator i get it your view and opinion of things drastically changes up here than if you're in a race car they certainly do you know it's been a while since we raced here uh due to covet restrictions we couldn't run here last year so it has been since 2020 the last race at this speedway since then jimmy johnson retired from full-time cup racing we've competed on six new tracks in the nascar cup series we have new celebrity car owner partners we have a new race car since we've last been here and six different drivers have scored their first career win since we last raced in southern california well i don't know about you matt but i am so glad to be back one of my favorite race tracks to race on very challenging one of the tracks that you still look at and you have in the back your mind when you walk out their starting grid i've got to keep in mind i've got to race this racetrack not just the competition yeah my thoughts exactly with all that stuff changing one thing that hasn't changed is this racetrack it's slick there's all those uh different scenes all kinds of different lanes and you really can go five wide so i think it's going to be exciting grace i'm glad they're here again fans waving to the crowd and talk about fans this place is packed let's hear from the poll sitter great job these last couple weeks man just keep learning let us know what you need to be better have some fun today a long day same game as last week keep keep an open mind i'll uh want to get all the laughs today that's my number one goal we got a lot to learn still have fun keep it rolling five wide they salute the fans as we take a look at today's ford performance track facts hey who's that guy most california wins by a ford driver it said minus three i think that means no no no no yeah it's been a long time this has always been one of my favorite tracks i still remember coming out here way back in 1997 in xfinity series i think maybe a year or two after they opened the track and i remember when roger penske built this place when you first walk in it's just an awesome facility it was something like i've never seen before remind me a lot of michigan but it was just brand new and as a track i just always really enjoyed the challenge almost got our first win here and xfinity and cop just came up short to track i always really enjoyed racing at and i always look forward to coming too there's the new 300 plus horsepower 2022 toyota camry trd leading the field well matt you said you remember when this place is new well it might not be new but there's a lot of new this time around when we come here these guys i'm telling you that race car you see right there they they got introduced to the new new the new where you have to handle you have to drive these things and boys have their hands full and i am telling you i think we're going to see more of it today kurt bush is starting out back because his car failed inspection three times he will also have to do a pass-through penalty after he takes the green on the racetrack so he will likely lose a lap during all that but the cop caution at lap 20 should put him back on the lead lap daniel suarez wearing our visor cam once again this week we appreciate that that's the kid rocks honky tonk on board cam i think you're going to see a lot out of that ambar camera and what we saw yesterday is just how rough this whole track is a lot of character a lot of daniel and some egos in the stands well on twitter they had hoped danny trail would wave the green machete to start this race but no the green flag is in the air and austin sindrick takes off [Music] [Music] [Music] eric jones to lead lap one from austin cendrick and denny hamlin saw a lot of guys taking it easy right there again we learned a lot yesterday what you don't want to do is take yourself out of this race and certainly don't want to do it on the first start [Music] tyler reddick has found his way to the top that only took a lap and a half he likes running the top and man does he do a good job at i was uh really enjoyed watching him especially in the xfinity car at homestead he would run that thing inches off the wall and uh would never make that mistake and hit it so we'll see if you can do it all day today you just said it xfinity the last time these guys were on the race track short practices not a lot of rubber down on the racetrack i would think this truck's cleaned up got some rubber down on the racetrack from that xfinity race yesterday probably catching a lot of these guys off guard tiptoeing into this thing it's like i think it is i think it's good all right we're good let's go racing yeah the other thing for the rest of the pack you know all the race cars are out there most everybody ran basically single car runs yesterday i mean they ran out at the same time but there was really no traffic so you know that the air is much more turbulent today and it's going to be much more challenging tyler redick up for third now kirk bush did his pass through penalty stayed on the lead lap as they come around now this one i like from an honorary starter danny trejo has stayed up on the flag stand that is the best seat in the house right there as they rumble by at nearly 180 miles an hour tell you what we just saw everybody that had trouble yesterday for the most part down in three and four was right down and using that apron you saw that nine car shoot down there went for it again bold move pass to kyle busch i think it takes me back to the opportunity these guys have you knew they were going to make some adjustments with their cars so they can handle that he hit that bump that they were all having trouble with no problem today smooth sailing yeah there's a couple of advantages with that apron there's more grip because there hasn't been many race cars on it and there's nobody in front of you typically so you get a little bit of clean air you get down there it's obviously flat it's off camber from the banking and uh i think they're probably just a little bit more careful they get a little farther around the corner and the pace is going to be a little slower with all the race cars being out there don't forget it's just a shorter way around exactly kyle bush back to ninth ricky stenhouse moving up to 10th eric jones first time he has led at california and this is the first time the 43 has led here since bobby labonte in 2007. i mean i think that just shows you that things could possibly be a lot different this year with this race car i know it's really early in the season but last year i didn't see the 43 car you know qualifying out front and leading laps and look at them out there so i know they want this car to be a big equalizer and i think it's definitely going to give some people opportunities to run up front that maybe haven't been on a regular basis before not to mention the off-season you know off-season is time to regroup try to figure it out find your strengths and weaknesses and make some adjustments and i feel like they are speaking of adjustments these guys are making adjustments they're migrating to the outside of this racetrack a line that we've kind of grown to be the norm as in the last few years that we've raced here something we saw a lot of in the xfinity series yesterday and they're already jockeying for position for that outside line eric jones said he couldn't sleep last night thinking about how the start of this race might play out so far so good for him and for that you saw that 16 briefly there that's alright keep opening up card and a half each lap every driver i talked to after yesterday's practice in qualifying was on edge very nervous about how their cars were going to handle in the race second place tyler reddick on the move he was in turn three dusting up right up next to the wall right up there last time by he started 11. does not surprise me in the least and it doesn't surprise his competition i talked to a few of his competition drivers and every one of them said we want to go to the outside but we're going to wait till tyler goes up there and cleans it up first now among those who had to start out back as ryan bellany makes a move on his penske four teammate that white line at the bottom of the track all that does is help the driver separate the banking from the apron you can go below it you can go all the way to the grass if you want kyle larson had to start out back he is the biggest mover up to 16. kyle busch came in here as the only cup driver active to champion a win here more than once here's what he says feels like the left front is too high super loose with the back i got no control with the back nobody gets in front of me is that tight that was too high man i think you picked him to win this race in the pre-race that's it thanks glenn yeah he doesn't sound very happy there but you know i've known kyle for a long time i've watched a race for a long time i was a teammate for a long time and he tends to get like that if they get the car a little bit better for him and get him rolling back toward the front uh you know he's going to be smart he's going to keep the thing in one piece and he'll get it rolling but i think the reason is is what you just heard right there feedback with this new car so many variables going into it as much feedback as you can give that crew chief so he can do a good job helping you that's what it's all about and really nobody does it better than kyle bush yeah and i think with kyle the more feedback he gives the more unhappy he is with his car typically like if he doesn't give a lot of feedback he's pretty happy it's a really good snapshot of those different lanes right there one two three four five you can count them trying to find as soon as that nine card chase elliot moved up against the wall that forced william byrne to try to find a different line you do not want to go in the wake of that car in front of you same thing goes with as you see with chase elliott right there looking to the inside of denny denny kind of moved down took that spot away watch this 24 squirt out there on the outside and get right up to the both of them about ricky stenhouse in the 47 started 17th he's worked his way up into this battle [Music] nine laps complete remember competition caution coming at lap 20 so teams can check tire wear they didn't have a long enough practice time to be able to do that so nascar announced that this morning and goodyear allotted each team an extra set of tires for the race they have 12 plus one set they have carried over for practice and qualify that jones boy has led every lap so far [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] nascar on fox is sponsored by progressive insurance save when you bundle auto home or motorcycle insurance and by credit one bank the official credit card of nascar green flag so far in fontana eric jones led the first 10 laps and then tyler reddick got ahead of steam right up by the wall powered around the outside of jones camaro and he has set sail he's let these last three laps let's check with jamie little i talked to his crew chief tyleretics crew chief that is randall burnett this morning and he said as soon as they say gentlemen start your engines i'm gonna be nervous but so far nothing to worry about with this team tyler reddick they tightened him up to start this race and that's exactly what he needed he was too loose early those adjustments they needed went in the right direction he's leading this race mike we've watched reddick for his whole obviously cup career but i'm telling you when you think of tyler reddick you need somebody on running that outside nobody does a better name look at this spinning joey logano bush kyle bush had drifted back from third to about and then goes around coming off turn number two first caution of the day [Music] everything was fine it was actually coming into me i think i got left on a seam um engine temp for a hot i don't know why [Music] yeah you heard him talk about the scene there got the left rear on a seam so we talked about those a little bit you can see the black lines in the corners that clearly divide every lane that we're counting one through five uh down to one and two and maybe a little bit less than three and four so when you cross those seams or get stuck in the seams and don't cross them quick enough it upsets the race car so you can see his car right there in the top seam he thinks he got the left rear stuck in there lost traction and lost control of the car nascar has declared this will be the competition caution so teams will be able to fuel so you see it moving down slightly right there and as soon as you covered up that seam that's right when it happened lock it down lock it down the hard thing is you heard him say the car was coming to me it was coming around the longer he ran it was starting to tighten up got on that seam so be interesting to hear and see how much adjustment you really give this guy will the track come to him clint one observation kyle bush was using a lot more brake than anybody else i'd been watching so in your car when your car's loose like that you got to use your tools what are your tools that's that steering wheel obviously but you can drag brake you can drive in the corner harder using more brake it'll kind of drive a tightness more into it those are all tricks of the trade and that's exactly why you see break pip road is open here with uh it'll be 16 complete when they cross the line this will be the competition caution jamie it's been a great first run for tyler reddick in the eight led five laps there car really good they said let's leave it alone let's see where it goes from here they'll fill it up with fuel four tires here meanwhile planey on the right in the 12 ryan's saying the car is pretty good but they were trying to figure out if they should take a risk now or just leave it regan well jamie the nine of chase elliot that race car is good right now he likes the balance the problem is he hurt the rear tires early on which made it too slippery with the back of the race car in the 43 eric jones hits race cars too loose in the top of three and four to run like tyler redick was [Music] redick wins the race off pit road william byron and denny hamlin good stops kyle larson as well following kevin harvick brad kozlowski chase elliott and joey logano kyle bush is the fifth series champion to spin on this racetrack this weekend [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] you still have a chance to win ten thousand dollars of clint's cash play fox bet super six for free just scan the qr code now download the super six app and enter your picks about today's race for a free shot at the jackpot how about this where will the pulse setter be running at the end of stage two the fastest lap most laps led toyota driver the best finish manufacturer with the most cars in the top five and then all we care about driver the best finish pick all six correct you can share in clint's money free to play i'd like some of clint's money i couldn't even buy me lunch yesterday all right watch the right front on ryan blaney's stop now when that lug nut the single nut is removed it is supposed to stay in the socket oops lower right and rolls away just like in the old days drivers are rather the tire changers they carry a spare lug on their belt put the new one on got him back out there and he only lost 13 spots he was third when he pitted it in the old days you say that was last year you used to see thousands of lug nuts out on the you know now we're going to see just one there's three right now but what i did see right there on that pit stop he had a lot of rear brake in that car locking the rear brakes up if we have a green flag pit stop later you might want to adjust that top lane here away that's daniel suarez in 13th here is austin cendrick in eighth grade great fight and we are back to green with tyler reddick and william byron up front everybody including kurt bush who was under penalty at the start still on the lead lap one and two sure it's fun to watch on a restart you see cars just spread out all over the place looks like they're four wide off a turn two but i was uh interested to see how tyler reddick would get through one and two because typically the middle and the bottom will be faster on new tires and he's just uh so good on the top speaking of the bottom i've watched this nine car and chase held it do exactly what you see these guys all three of them running on that apron finding some speed down there way down low and three and four everybody was having trouble there yesterday that's exactly where they were wrecking spinning hitting a hole a little different setup today you can tell some of these crew chiefs has made some adjustments to these boys and they can race all over this racetrack [Music] or off of it for that matter stenhouse seventh going after martin truax making the pass on the outside in the back straight away kyle larson coming right with him you see the five shoot by there he got to run off a turn two and uh caught the drive to the car in front of him and just drove right by him on the straightaway starting to see a trend these hendrick cars are showing up just like they did last year you got elliott william byron and the five-car kyle larson coming on strong now in the morning warm-up when they started the engine to get some heat in it uh they found a problem in the ignition system on kyle larson's car they had to change it so he had to start this race from the back like what i saw right there you see austin shindrick running really close to kyle larson on the bottom of them i really looked at these cars and i was wondering if you get that side draft you can pull that bottom car around he held tough right there really close side drafting yeah that's for sure the closest we've seen any cars side by side typically that inside car will lose a lot of air on the side and get so much more unstable and loose and hard to hold on to it and it looked like they went through they're both pretty stable side-by-side chase elliot wants the lead spun yesterday while going for the pole and now he was first he was fastest in round one he's gonna have to get clear up and he did it right there off the two so important to make sure you get up in front of them if you don't moy and that momentum on the outside really stalls you out and that's not shocking i feel like a lot of times the guys that are really good on the top take a little longer to get going it takes you know 10 15 laps to get the top really rolling and the cars that can run around the bottom seem to maybe fade a little bit quicker so be interesting to see if tyler can run him back down later on in this run cole custer in the 41 had a big day yesterday here in the xfinity series race pretty well dominated well he's putting it to good use past a lot of cars moving up front holding a pretty wheel finesse got to take care of these tires and he logged a lot of laps and learned a lot winning that race yesterday in the xfinity race and even though they're totally different cars i remember we used to run some saturdays and then you'd go race on sunday when you can go win a race on saturday it just builds confidence for the next day it's a different car different team but it's the same race track you're feeling so good coming off a win it just uh it just builds that confidence and uh sometimes that means a lot not quite that's the the clear up you're hoping for and you can't see it not a very good vantage point for the spotter either trying to clear you up coming at you at the same time hard for him to tell i think these two are going to battle it out it's going to be interesting to see that you can tell right there tyler reddick is more comfortable with his car running right up against the wall it takes a while for that line to start paying off it'll be interesting if chase elliott can move up and hold pace you'll know that line is is fully formed when stenhouse gets up there because he loves to rim ride but he's been passing cars on the bottom car is really good very impressive with ricky stenhouse and company on the 47 car just like you said moving all over the place that's what you need to be competitive on this racetrack you can't just be good in one lane or the other having something that can maneuver around yeah i mean before mention about the 43 car how good he was running i mean the 47 is another one um you know he always runs runs good but we haven't seen him run up in the top four or five uh like this at a at an intermediate type racetrack so it's good to see him up there running good and going toward the front that's the vision behind this car parody you want everybody to have the same thing right everybody buys these parts and pieces at the same house that being said as soon as they get them back make some adjustments make it your own communication the things that we heard with kyle bush that's what makes the difference so we had that first caution flag that was the competition caution to check tire wear what have you found jamie well kyle larson as you know mike started in the back up 21 positions now in that first run after 15 laps he was a little loose cliff daniels as crew chief took a look at the tires and said we've got excessive wear we really need to maintain and take care of our tires there's no cords but definitely an alert so they'll keep their eye on it i'm interested to see which one of those right sides was worn is it the right rear or the right front that has a big deal with how the handling is on your car and how you're managing that yeah guys i would be nervous about that because we went back racing at lap 19. that's 46 laps to go in this stage that's right there essentially on the threshold of a fuel window but it sounds like to me that's going to be borderline on getting there with this set of tires should we go caution free we may see more green flag pit stops before the stage ends yeah i agree with larry i don't think there's any way they're running that many laps to the end of this stage on tires i think that they'll uh probably divide it up get some tires on especially the amount of fall off they have and then really look at everything after the stage break and go from there really the only thing you can do there try to find and hone in on a neutral setup you can't be leaning on that right front with too tight and you can't be leaning too hard with the throttle on the right rear got to get a neutral setup where you can take care of business sixth place this happening four seconds behind the leader top of the track or down on the bottom does one wear the tires less than the other i really believe the apron and three and four where all the grip is i believe that wears a tire is the fastest i think it wears the uh especially the left sides i think it drags it getting onto the apron and it drags it again getting back up on the racetrack onto the banking i think when you go around the top like tyler redick is not as much steering input i think it's easier on the tires chase elliot has become the third different leader of this race [Music] [Music] hey race fans jesse punch here bringing you updates live from auto club speedway keep your eye on that a car of tyler reddick currently running second he's really feeling out this racetrack playing to his strengths and finding where the weak spots are he is playing the long game here looking to pull off the win a california native he's coming second three times in his career so he's playing the long game early trying to fill out the racetrack and see what he can do later on in this race fun fact though as stage one is quickly coming to a close interestingly enough since the implementation of stage racing the stage one winner has gone on to win this race so we'll see if history repeats itself here today at auto club [Music] nascar on fox is sponsored by ford built for america and by coca-cola zero sugar is it the best coke ever 32 laps complete here in southern california let's look at how the coca-cola family of drivers are faring uh joey logano started out back he's eight denny hamlin ninth and suarez 17th austin dillon 28th all still on the lead lap chase elliott has now led for 10 consecutive laps eric jones led the first uh most of the first 11. tyler reddick has also led 11 laps now we saw a spin by kyle bush oh car on the wall up front it is chase elliot has bounced off the wall we stay green pretty good yes he did both ends not just the right rear slap to right front now we're gonna see if this car how tough it really is [Music] well carbon fiber reinforced bodies flange easy oh way to go here feel it out aluminum wheels that is a pretty good hit pretty hard hit that is yeah he was just running right up next to that wall there's just not a lot of room for error there and you see the car stepped out when you got to turn right to catch it you just don't have any room and just uh ended up getting in the wall you say room though just like yesterday this thing steps out and it's gone he's lucky he was that close to the wall because it caught him kept him from spinning out and kept him moving forward if that would have been on the bottom of the racetrack we'd have been under caution right now and he'd have been asking for a set of tires or a rear clip you remember at daytona use richard petty used to always run right up near the wall and i once asked him why he says because it don't hurt so bad when you hit it okay and i'm gonna i mean he's into it again he might have a tire down now car to the inside is eric jones no chance for elliott to get down to pit entry even if that was his desire okay everybody at home wondering why we went to this car this thing's still going forward it's tested tough all right let's get back to pit stops and reagan well mike you see the 18 car right here had a nice run back up through the pack he's up to about 15 a little problem with that race car now though he's screaming to the team he may have to pit so we're gonna have to keep an eye out for that tire fall off since the start of this run is 1.5 seconds or more [Music] i've got it out of water what do you want to do we're either going to blow up or we're going to fix it kyle is coming down onto the apron headed for pit road at a pretty good clip here larry what can they do what do you do right here you can't take tape off the front of it because there is none no the only thing they're gonna have to do they're gonna have to try to put water back in this system yeah there's no tape on the nose of the cars you can see right there there's a block off plate in front of the radiator but no tape on the front end rigging like the team after that first pit stop when they had the spin said they blew about 20 pounds of sand out of the front of that race car so evidently that's what's causing the overheating and they're gonna have to do the same thing again here that's old unfaithful right there yes apparently the way these noses are constructed you can't get in there to clear any debris that may have blown through the grill and sat there in front of the radiator yeah you see those black hoses that's that they're putting water back in the system it's a pressurized system that's what those two hoses are and then try to get the debris out of the radiator and grab the handy leaf blower trying to uh blow the debris out chase elliott goes around and caution flies for the second time today she's gone from bad to worse [Music] he was in sixth place at the time looked like he might be trying to ride that out until a caution flag and he becomes the caution damage to the right side after getting up and into the wall twice see all the lettering buffed off those goodyear tires yeah i'm sure he's got a little damage from the first two times he hit the wall there and car messed up just a little bit and trying to make it as long as he could until the caution and unfortunately it became caution and the damage you know with this new rear independent suspension i would think maybe some tow damage on that right rear was making that thing really loose especially after the first time in the wall b.j mccloud will get the free pass first car one lap down that's hot i can't tell i might have a tire down i don't know what's the tire or what just broke so sorry i see the road's open yeah come on pit road is open now they were last on pit road at the first caution flag for kyle bush's spin 20 laps ago if they stop now for fuel there would be no question of making it to the end of stage one [Music] and here they all come jamie the aid of tyler reddick just listening to his radio right now he's saying he's having some issues focusing he said his left leg has gone numb and it's he's not able to focus on what he's supposed to be focusing on even though he was the leader of the race he said something's wrong with the seat so we'll definitely keep an eye on that a four tire stop for him ryan blaney said it got worse there so they're going to make more adjustments to help the 12. see if they get that solid pit stop here reagan the 24 william byer in that race car decent right now not turn in the middle quite as good as he wants to in the 43 of eric jones that race car needs some more security on exit means that back is just swinging around too much on him here's your ram race off pit road tyler reddick holds position austin cendrick big gain of seven spots cody ware was on pit road before it was open they may have some difficulty on that car tough day for chase elliot in the early going hey race fans jesse punch here live once again from auto club speedway second caution of the day is bringing these cars into paint road for the first time pit stops today you're gonna see a lot of them the pit window was about halfway through each stage 65 lap stages you're looking at about lap 40 to lap 45 when these teams are gonna need to bring it in so that last caution worked out in their favor when it came to strategy we're gonna see how things shake down here in the final laps of stage one enjoy the race everybody's a race fan in southern california part of this big crowd that's on hand there's your honorary starter a number of folks that were at the la coliseum asked to come out including some of our grand marshals there so all right let's talk a little bit about this airflow issue that seems to be plaguing a couple of the gibbs cars larry yeah let's go to our ford performance cutaway car this is another major difference this year with this next gen car now the grill opening at the bottom of the front bumper looks a lot like last year's but the air is going two different places as it goes through there it's putting air to the engine to the throttle body and then through the radiator but it does not go under the hood and exit out those louvers so all this is sealed up if you've got debris or sand mic it's hard to get in there to get rid of it blow it out like the 18 and the 20 of christopher bell is trying to do another thing in that is there's a block plate in there and the teams can adjust that in other words they can either have it all the way open which i've heard a lot of them run or they can actually close that off and maybe they're doing some of that and it's plugged it up we're gonna restart with daniel hamrick still on pit road he's leaving now with shifter issues cody ware is four laps down kyle busch minus three chase elliot and garrett smithley are one lap down as tyler reddick and eric jones lead them back to green [Music] there's some austin cindrick still audio still square still half up no run half up still left side tap up three wide behind how about four half by half you could see when eric jones moved over and took that channel in the wake he got really tight and slid all the way up into the middle of the racetrack not where he wanted to be [Music] three times the twelve the middle eight ryan blaney shoots the middle between larson on the bottom and he tried to get cindrick on the top nothing there that opens the door for the 14 to chase briscoe i feel like the aggression is definitely picking up the first couple restarts i felt like were a little bit everybody's giving each other a little bit more room they're definitely racing harder definitely closer to each other than what they were to start getting way more comfortable well in our new tires superman's cape yeah and chase briscoe right there you see in the 14. he started quite a ways back moving to the front definitely a guy learning from cole custer his teammate yesterday in the xfinity series running that line exactly where he's running right there [Music] tyler reddick trying to pull away from william byron here jamie mike i mentioned he's really uncomfortable in that seat right now his left leg has gone numb and it's affecting his ability to focus this was the conversation on his radio it's really hard to concentrate i don't know what's going on i just something is wrong with my feet my freaking left leg's asleep i can't feel it but yeah it almost just feels like my legs are like my legs are just too big like i can gain too much like size and offseason i'm not really sure what else i can feed i've never heard anybody tell on themselves in the off season man i think he was talking about how much muscle mass he built during off season like he said his lines are bigger in all seriousness one thing that can i think that it could be is the crotch belt you have not only the crotch belt up the center you have two leg belts that hold pretty tight on your side kind of right at your groin and that thing if it catches you wrong can pinch your circulation off and certainly give you a fit yeah and especially because those belts are typically sewn to length they're not adjustable so like when we do our belts those uh those belts you're talking about that goes around your your quads or your thighs are sewn the length and if they're too short and he did get his legs bigger and the winner from from working out or what have you and those things didn't get lengthened out they could be almost cutting off your circulation and giving them some trouble and these seats are so form fit you don't fit them at 175 miles an hour you fit them sitting still in the shop a lot of pressure points well you want to talk about circulation his lead in the circulation within that man ricky stinhaus in his 47 car is extremely fast today and means business back to fifth place jones and logano and joey logano i believe started in the back day two and drove all the way up to fifth place already it's a heck of a run whoa those pesky boys top to bottom bottom to top yeah they're answering our side draft question they are definitely working on running close to each other's sides the farther we get into this race what a start to the season for team penske victorious at daytona the next victory for one of rogers cars will be that organization 600th and you see him getting passed on both sides right there this is one of those racetracks that kind of reminds me of a dirt track there's two lanes you better be in if you're going to run that bottom b on the bottom and if you're going to run the top b on the top don't be in no man's land in the middle she's slick and no place to be i can't tell you how many times i when i was growing up racing dirt track my old man had come to me boy you got to get on the top dad i'm on the top man there's no way got sickles right around you on the outside he says now do you believe me there's the top and you ain't on it boy and legato now on the bottom i've been there we've seen a great finish i can't remember the year but jimmy johnson was leading the race and and that was like that he thought he was running the top and kevin harvick caught him down a back stretch and squeezed outside of him and turned three it didn't look like there's enough room but it was like the tyler reddick top well larry if tyler reddick's having trouble he's pulling away well his left leg may be numb but the right one's doing just fine he picks the throttle up so much earlier than anybody else he has to pedal a little bit but he picks that throttle up much earlier than any of those drivers behind him you'll see his telemetry on the lower left green of course is throttle trace and you see the throttle way early in the corner much before the apex of the corner he's already back in the throttle not wide open but on this big race track like this where it's all about momentum keeping that throttle down as much as you can it's the name of the game yep it's about maximizing that minimum speed you want to get the car rolling as soon as you can through the center especially on the top is just keeping up that minimum speed higher than everybody else's apparently nobody told ricky stenhouse his average finish here is 19th he has not wasted a lot of time rocketing right to the front today don't think that 43 car doesn't have the same thing going on very impressive out of eric jones and company into 43 today 50 of 200 laps complete tyler redick out front by 1.8 seconds as we take you fox side by side [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] as you saw josh belicky went for a spin running 29th at the time [Music] and you also saw martin truex get up and uh brush the wall and that caused everybody to scatter behind him [Music] let's ride with austin centric super barely clear all clear inside the question is how is it not because of these three cars big hit by martin truex but another huge shot by the two and then the five as well i think the two might have missed them i believe you're right but i think the five hit the two in the left front really hard all right pit road's open jamie tyler reddick decided to come in said the cars just a little bit better they're gonna go more on the air pressure here if more tires stop they're going to try to give them a sugar package to put in his water meanwhile ryan bladey said we're pretty close let's go racing iron in the 24 it said he couldn't trust that right rear was sliding too much and the 43 of eric jones still wants help with the center of that race car he's loose as well meaning the back is swinging around from him four wide coming out of the pits and redick is going to hold the lead from byron and jones kurt bush up five spots it's a great stop [Music] so let's have another look at austin centric to see was their contact as he tried to evade martin truax up and into the wall [Music] i would say yes or is that on the other side that's the other side race fans jesse punch here live once again from auto club speedway currently standing in the 43 pit of eric jones this team is having a stellar run already early on today currently in second eric complaining earlier in his run of being a little bit tight they were able to bring it in fix those adjustments now his only complaint is dirty air other than that he is confident jones here in his second full-time season driving for team owner richard petty an expanded operation this year with championship truck team gm us he's hoping to bring home their first win today at auto club [Music] [Music] nine laps the usfl starting april 16th and kicking off with an historic inaugural game the generals take on the stallions in prime time on fox and nbc new jersey versus birmingham the usfl coming to box this spring we got the best of the nfl here today and we're casting a large shadow during our pre-race and everywhere he goes matthew stafford super bowl winning quarterback having a great time at the races not having a great time ryan blaney they had trouble on the right rear changing tires that time and we found out why kurt busch gained seven spots too fast exiting pit road he will go to the back austin dillon served a speeding penalty on the second caution this is caution flag number three tyler reddick who led a total of 43 laps all last season in his richard childress number eight camaro has now been out front this will be 30 laps as they come to the stripe for the restart green eric jones alongside william byron in the second row with chase briscoe and we're back to green eight laps to go to the end of stage one fan out out the front inside 14 inside 14. even door corner corner try to drag it back corner clear you heard him say fainting out they certainly are all over the racetrack see that purple car bounce brad keselowski down on the bottom that's uh that is a filling loosening ride down there yeah you saw denny had a big run off of turn two and gave uh the six car pretty good push right in the middle of the back stretch before we got to turn three so everybody's definitely getting more comfortable and more confident not seeing a whole lot of drafting with this car like i thought i would see down the straightaways all the pass and is all just sheer momentum through the center of the corner he just keeps getting closer and closer to the front and every time he does that that car is going to handle better and better it's going to be a big difference and he gets up here in a clean air amongst the top three or four crossover move jamie chase briscoe coming off the third place at daytona i talked to him before this race and he said we unloaded we're pretty off but we were able to make some decent adjustments in that shortened practice session yesterday he said as long as i can run the top of this racetrack we are good he said i am out of control on the bottom that's exactly what he's done to get to the front ricky if he didn't hit the wall he was really close coming off a two there's 10 house to the bottom and that 47. that thing is red like a firecracker and he's running it today like it's got a short fuse since we started stage racing in nascar the stage one winner has never failed to go to victory lane at fontana and i think the worst finish in the stage for any previous winner here at fontana since stage racing came about as second so they've won all the first stages and and second is worse they finished in the second stage so this could be a little different today i think this can still be a different race than what we've seen before adjustments very impressive with the adjustments you've seen on these cars yes they're making ground but they're also making ground with the adjustments every time they see pit road you see a car this inch a little bit farther to the front more and more number of top contenders having trouble early as we look back from pole center austin cendrick chase elliott is two laps down kyle bush is four laps down four to go to the end of stage one eric jones inching up on tyler reddick there's a look at kyle busch four back and william byron trying to close the gap daniel that's our fox visor cam attached to his helmet you can see especially down on the bottom it's a rough ride here yeah part of that's because hey let's face it the track yes it has some character nets rough but these teams elect to run these cars very rigid that's where all the downforce is made underneath this car you've heard us talk about it a lot with the diffuser in the rear end and things like that you have to run the car very rich and rigid to be able to control the gap underneath there and get all the down force ricky stenhouse now has dropped back to ninth regan well mike we talk about teams making a lot of changes so far today the 47 car has not changed a thing on that race car ricky has been quiet all day long we see him sliding back and losing another position close to losing another spot there he has remained quiet on the radio nothing from the driver yet now blaney behind him is in 10th that is the last stage point to be earned here in two more laps and you see ricky hasn't quite committed to the very top yet like you see the eight car up there the 24 coming through your screen some of those guys have committed to that very top lane stand above that top seam all the way through the corners seem to be the best cars in the longer run it surprises me that he's not when you talk about ricky stinhaus talk about aggressive right that is the guy that's going to put it on the wall be aggressive right out of the box so maybe there's something going on with that car that just is a little bit too much on edge not comfortable to be up there close to the wall just quite yet need some adjustments just like regan said yeah and it's a risk reward type deal maybe he's just not quite ready to risk that until they get their car a little bit more comfortable and uh brian patty does a great job with that car he'll get it right for him and get him comfortable and i'm sure he'll get his way moved up there before the end of the race and it does last night check doesn't pay anything to win stage one just some points stanhouse trying to hang on to that final stage point as tyler reddick comes around with a half second lead [Music] and redick will get his fifth career stage win and his first at fontana by half a second over eric jones william byron chase briscoe larson bowman logano blaney cendrick and stenhouse take home the points for stage one california's own tyler reddick [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] nascar on fox is sponsored by toyota let's go places and by pnc bank see how we can make a difference end of stage one tyler reddick the stage winner chase elliott will get the free pass and get a lap back here our last four california race winners and what they have in common is they were all the winner of stage one as well as the race [Music] well like larry mack said no problem with that right foot it was hammered down yes it was pit road will be open this time all right just like you have been don't pass the pace card till we get to the commitment line comfort wise what can they do for him with that left leg going numb i mean if you know that i would do anything just don't mess with this right one but you know the only thing you could do is you know under a pistol after you leave your pit stop if you have a few question laps you could loosen up your your seat belts a little bit maybe pull your driver's suit around a little bit if you think your leg is getting pinched by that seat belt just try to reposition yourself a little bit before you tighten them back up to go green again 31 lead lap cars headed for pit road jamie chase briscoe in the red number 14 up 20 positions since the start of this race said he fired off really tight that last run so they're gonna try to change that and help him with some air pressure meanwhile the eighth matt kenzeth you're exactly right he's been loosening his belt under caution they told him just to be cognizant of that you're actually giving him right now in his driver's side window some ibuprofen to help for the remainder of this race of four tires stop air pressure was a positive change reagan the 24 william byron continues to make that car better especially with the rears that we're sliding around too much wants more of the same change as the last run in the 43 of eric jones wants to leave this car alone right now he really would like to get a long run to see where the car is going to trend as the race goes on mostly four tire changes as redick leads them off pit road ahead of briscoe and byron let's dial him up boys hey tyler reddick it's boyer kansas mike joy up in the fox sports booth you got us yeah i got you guys you got them uh motorized uh lounge chairs up there no hey our chair seems to be way better than yours we're hearing a lot of radio chatter you have struggling inside that car left side cramping up but the right side's working good what do you got for us well uh i think i did so many squads and deadlifts in the off season and uh i didn't think that was going to be a problem but it seems like it is i outgrew my feet a little bit in areas i wasn't expecting certainly good that it was because of squats you know for me it was always the other thing especially early on in the season but uh you're gonna be okay there holding the pretty wheel high wide and handsome steal the game yeah i mean um i'll i'll take i'll take what's going on all day if uh you know i keep getting to drive race cars like this all of our guys at rcr men and women rcr did a really good job of preparing for this race and uh having fun i know it's um it's a long way to go still but uh i think we can make our car better and i'm excited to see how this continues to play out all right buddy congratulations on your stage keep it up tyler reddick has led 42 laps of 69 so far [Music] [Music] race fans jesse punch here live once again from auto club speedway currently in the 99 pit of daniel suarez steady run for this team so far today they finished 13th in stage one qualified 15th so consistency has been key for them no complaints from daniel regarding the race car but he is complaining about the surface of the racetrack he says it is incredibly rough and incredibly hard to manage that was a given though considering this is now the oldest surface that we race on on the circuit drivers knew what they were getting themselves into today the baddest woman on the planet ronda rousey competes in her first ever match on smackdown plus sami zayn defends his intercontinental title against ricochet it's an all-new friday night smackdown live at eight eastern seven central on fox on his pit stop todd gilliland lost a wheel and tire the right front came off nascar had to go retrieve it so that'll extend this caution uh for just a bit 400 miles the race distance today an hour and a half the driving distance for somebody to come say hi to matt kenseth in his broadcast debut mark martin steps in thanks for coming by well this is fun man you guys are doing a great job today and we're seeing a great race so it's fun to drop in and visit well now did you come to see matter come to see ice cube come on now ice cube tell the truth man it's great to see you without this man i would have never been racing uh in the cup series so man it's great to see it's been a while um obviously one of the best to ever do it so it's just great to see the racetrack well thank you matt i appreciate it boy this is so much fun to see all my old buddies and you know it's really exciting time in nascar you know it's on the upward swing right now i love what i'm seeing you know the clinic that uh tyler reddick's putting on out there i mean a real talent you know really showing what he can do and it's cool to see eric jones as well uh you know really showing what he can do and this is just good stuff mark you've been pretty vocal about this car right you wanted horsepower back you want these guys to be able to have to drive these cars much like you did back in your day we saw a lot of that yesterday and again today what do you think about this new car and have these guys have their hands full well this is perfect today because the teams haven't figured out all the nuances about how to set them up perfectly and figured out you know how to get the most out of the new tire the short sidewall and all that stuff so the drivers are having to do big time work and that's what i want to see i mean i want to see these guys we have incredible talent out here in this field and i want to see them have to put that on display well they're just playing it all right that's hall of famer mark martin visiting with us let's get an update on curt bush who will restart at the tail end of the lead lap it's been a tough day for kurt bush started in the back worked his way up had a pit road speeding penalty now he's in the back but that's not the only issues listen in hey kurt just keeping you filled in that right rear the threads are having a struggle um but not going on and off so we're gonna continue to be careful over there and uh be conservative make sure it's tight and for some reason we get an opportunity to try to spray them and clean them up uh we will awesome awesomeness [Applause] [Music] a lot to learn about this new car and what it needs i think kurt might have been being a little sarcastic there when he was he was saying that that was awesome but i think i don't think that they're cross threading right and that's why they're having trouble i think it galls up with some lube on there and things like that so you heard him say to clean it up i think they'll try to spray some brake cleaner on there get some of that gunk off there the glue maybe that they had that stuck on here to do something like that to try to help those threads it's an aluminum wheel going on a steel stud as well so i think that aluminum probably just scrapes in that first thread a little bit and eventually it gets some build up so like you say they're going to go in there and try to clean all that build up out and start over and hopefully be good to the end of the race all right let's hear from our pole sitter austin cendrick and his team [Music] the left fender's pretty good shape i would say uh try not to use it again on anybody because it's soft but it's all we're supposed to be happy i uh i didn't use it i uh it definitely got used but um without assigning flame just uh now that left front fender got into kyle larson as he was trying to get away from martin truax as we replayed tyler reddit chase briscoe lead them to the geico restart zone for stage two [Music] still outside 24. still out there clear up clear up clear up 24 outside now outside the 24 that's kyle larson spotter the wind is giving him a good push down that back straight away he's giving the 14 a big push too to the lead as a matter of fact but now he shoots to the bottom across the apron you need to hear clear up that's what the five car is listening for right here and he's gonna hear it three wide for third you see denny's car there come off the apron and uh hit that bump we were talking about all day yesterday and saw some dust fly out of the bump looks like he's still uh hitting that hole pretty hard down there and then you see another push from tyler reddick pushing the 14 to chase briscoe right back around larson and the five back underneath of him this is the racing that i came for right here kyle larson just became the race's sixth different official leader at the start finish line chase briscoe in front tyler reddick wants it back and if at all possible he's gonna want to get back around briscoe before he gets moved all the way up to the top because that's his line and it's hard to pass out of that line and once you get that taken away from me it's going to be hard to catch up and get back around him that's a great point matt and i haven't seen chase briscoe really commit to the outside really nobody has other than uh tyler reddick so it's going to be interesting he's going to have to make that move as tyler reddick as you see on the outside he starts to catch him you see him in the mirror and you got a choice to make either figure it out and get up there in front of him or let him go by [Music] that's the one you didn't expect i'm looking for him on the outside which one is its spot now he's on the bottom but is he going to get the lead no he got in there plenty hard and was clear in the middle but you have to be able to continue that corner and be clear off the corner and you just get so much momentum off that top i mean he just couldn't couldn't complete the pass fellas how do you race this hard when somebody's in your saying save those tires take care of those tires it's a great point and then it's what they're out there trying to figure out right you got to hold those guys off because clean air is so important you can't afford to give those spots up but you also can't afford to abuse those tires early on in these runs very very difficult to try to balance that management of these tires as you go out through the runs for all these drivers william byron the only one of the top four who did not start his career on dirt now up to third well mark that make you want to be out there no it doesn't but when i walked across the front stretch and looked down at turn one it took my breath so i don't have any business out there i let these experts handle it from here on out shoot mark could probably still whip half these guys in the field don't let them fool you well you know one of the things that i'm thinking about here is you know those those tar strips always were a problem you know so that's another thing that you've got to bring into the equation is you know if you get on one of those things and we've seen it today you get on one of those things these things can snap around on you pretty quick but we always have trouble we always tried to straddle them or stay above or below them so that's one of the characteristics about this racetrack that even adds another dimension in you know getting through the turns you see those seams in the asphalt one just under the left tires of austin cendrick there cendrick drove his way to ruoff mortgage victory lane last week in daytona who could join him this week here in california cendrick's win third fewest starts before winning the daytona 500 trevor bain did it in his second career nascar start and who did it in their very first in 1967 driving a holman and moody forward mario andretti you could really hear him working a throttle in there very you know aggressive on and off the gas trying to figure that out one thing that he has done is move up i said trying to figure it out that's running that outside line you can see those leaders driving off into the sunset doing that i see austin cendrick you talk about learning he said that in a pre-race show in my interview i need to learn as much as possible and that's exactly what you're seeing him do [Music] brad kozlowski in the six slots in there in 11th just ahead of yesterday's winner cola custer and now they go three wide entering [Music] chase briscoe out in front in a stuart haas ford larry well he's got a good race car but the old pit crew is hitting on all eight cylinders mike his last troop two trips to pit road now remember four tires each time the stop on that 154 9.3 the last stop 9.9 with the wedge adjustment in the right rear wow that is getting it done chase briscoe who grew up in indiana a huge tony stewart fan looking for his first career win today [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] live once again from auto club speedway i'm jesse punch we saw a little bit ago the 30a car lost a wheel that's the third wheel violation that we've seen so far this season similar to what we saw last week here for the 31 of justin haley that's a big violation for these teams it is a four race suspension for the crew chief and two crew members on top of that i will say though teams do have an opportunity to appeal the violation appeal the suspension i should say which is why you still see crew chief trent owens on top of the pit box here today until that goes through they are still able to work so interested to see if this 38 team will appeal following today's race [Music] sunday two big ten rivals wrap up their regular season on fox number 22 ohio state face the michigan wolverines next sunday noon eastern on fox and on the fox sports app here in fontana california chase briscoe is out in front of the field he is led now for 10 consecutive laps in his mustang now we've run enough laps i'm seeing this i've watched tyler reddick 4283 to briscoe's 42-98 business is picking up on that outside and you saw the 14 move up and take that line i was wondering if he was willing to move up and do what it takes and he answered the call right there in three and four yeah reddick's slowly closing in on him it looks like his lap times are just a little bit quicker but he did take that lane away that red aqua so it'll be interesting if he catches them kyle excuse me left rear is down on his toyota and bush is already four laps down he came in here a pretty strong favorite only driver in the field to win here multiple times four-time winner all right you saw william byron in third 1.6 seconds back here's ryan blaney in fourth three and a half off the lead guys i can't tell you you know you guys know but it is so hard to ride that wall like briscoe and reddick's been doing it all day it is so so difficult i mean i never could do that yeah for me it was a timing thing joey logano in sixth place behind kyle larson jamie remember he got into the wall yesterday some right rear damage they were able to repair that he also had to start in the back they've been making some really positive changes on this 22 machine he said they're right where they need to be now regan well jamie the 43 car of eric jones taking note of the racetrack comments about the rubber said that the rubber went down early but the track hasn't changed a lot pretty interesting sometimes at this place but once the rubber starts going down it keeps building up not the case right now denny hamlin in eighth he's got a mirror full of austin cendrick they are six seconds off the lead and denny was up there mixing it up with the leaders up third or fourth when he hit that hole off of turn four and you could see his car bottom out and the stuff come out from behind and he lost his momentum lost four or five spots there and seemed to settle back in right now so maybe they have a lot the low air pressure with the ride heights being low and it might just take him a while to get going so it'll be interesting to see if he can gain back at the end of this run now catching that group is alex bowman the last cup driver to win on this track regan mike it's been a very steady day for the 48 of alex bowman that car right now is just struggling with the dirty air and the race car is too tight off the corners that won't turn in that dirty air in particular jamie brad kozlowski's worked his way and that's number six up to 11th right now said he loves these cars how hard they are to drive how unpredictable they are they've been making adjustments on it but the game plan from the start was don't go easy we've got to go for it they want to prove something get the second win here for keslovsky looking for a second win of the weekend is cole custer in 12th he is about three seconds two and a half seconds behind that group and ten seconds off the lead christopher bell right with him that takes you through the top dozen there are 31 cars still on the lead left as this is for fifth logano larson and eric jones marching back up front let's take another look at what just happened here with kyle larson got the door closed on him he was thinking he was going to let him outside joey was waiting on that spot again that vantage point from those spots you heard me talk about it earlier it's very hard for the spotters to clear you up right there and you can tell by joey he may have heard it in his ear but he didn't like what he heard didn't believe it squeezed him the five carved uh of kyle larson lifted out of the gas and you can see how much it cost him and what people don't understand that are watching it on tv is you can't change directions nearly as fast as people think you should be able to because you're right on the edge of losing control or losing traction and you can't spin turn four one car up by the wall that was christopher bell everybody takes advan evasive action denny hamlin had already come on to pit road before the caution flag flew here at lap 91 now hamlin was on his way in regan mike denny hamilton had to pit early right there issues with the temperature on that race car the gauge kept climbing at 315 degrees said we've got to come now as you see he passes through because of that caution so that's the third of the gibbs car to hit pit road with overheating issues one of them earlier was christopher bell the other was kyle busch bell was 13th when this happened [Music] and it puts us under caution for the fifth time today the amr safety team out there quickly and tires down on christopher bell mark martin thanks for coming by we're gonna let you go find ice cube i know he's on the property somewhere he had such a great time at the coliseum that uh he said hey can i come back for fontana absolutely well thanks for having me up here guys uh you know these two guys are always cracking on me so you put me in a bad spot between them both so uh but anyway it's really good good times to see everybody that's one thing's for certain you're all everybody out here on this racetrack and including us you're everybody's hero appreciate you being here thank you buddy all right nascar hall of famer mark martin thank you mike caution out for the fifth time today for christopher bell's spin there you see a spare lug nut on the belt of that tire changer just in case chase elliott gets the free pass for the second time today and that uh that will put him back on the lead lap as pit road will open this time around little now there's some bounce to the ounce right there boys it looked like look at the cars yesterday in the rear that's a big caddy and a porsche 914 that's that's two things that don't go together one thing you'll learn right here matt he will not only know that that's a cadillac he'll know what engine model it was your model everything about that car 460 v8 jamie bounced to the out so i'm going to remember that for a while there mike the 14 makes it down chase briscoe with a great run here he's led 16 laps so far today said as the run went on he got freer got a little edgy and tyler reddick the egg came in hot said he doesn't know what to change let's just leave it alone here for her four tires stop reagan well william byron overworked the rear tires on that car said it was his fault he's got to do a better job with those needs more turn out of the front the 43 of eric jones that car just keeps getting better as the run goes on no changes we'll look at the ram race off pit road reddick and briscoe swap spots syndrick plus three eric jones had a long stop and loses three [Music] under caution in fontana [Music] [Music] nascar on fox is sponsored by credit one bank the official credit card of nascar closing in on halfway we're under caution for the fifth time denny hamlin will get penalized for too many men over the wall as christopher bell's car is hauled back to his pit it has not been a good day for joe gibbs racing a couple of cars bumping the wall or for 23-11 burt bush and bubba wallace and then overheating issues for most of the gibbs camp bubba wallace runner-up in the 500 he's had a quiet day kurt bush kurt busch has probably passed more cars than anybody here because he's been to the back more times than anybody else yeah a lot of things to learn obviously temperatures you see these flat tires that people are having we all know that it can't happen i mean he's gonna go three four laps down with a 20 car i know that there's adjustments coming and that's not something you fix overnight let's catch up on alex bowman reagan well mike clint talks about a lot of things that drivers have to learn with flat tires things like that you gotta learn how to drive these cars good but apparently you have to learn how to spin them as well listen to this you get in that situation and you spin number one save the car but if you can keep momentum when you're done spinning and not stop it'll at least give you a fight chance of getting stuck like this and then the day just being killed yeah that's because when a car gets its tires flat with this new car it is often unable to drive away and as we saw with christopher bell has to get towed back to pitt road and that is a lengthy laborious process they still have not completely now they've unhooked him he's four laps down yeah there's been a lot of changes but one of them is is super speedways you always have inner liners so when you got a flat you kind of got a half a flat because there's a tire inside a tire that would that would hold the car somewhat off the ground so there's no more inner liners when the tire goes flat goes to the wheel and they got the car dragging on the ground and just can't move [Music] we met with nascar this morning they told us they are reviewing that situation and they are working on a different extrication procedure for cars that will not drive away under their own power that they hope to have in place beginning next week it's just all part of the learning process with this brand new car oh we're joined by royalty let's see miss fontana miss fontana i would guess they're all miss fontana one sort of another here that's pretty sharp lambo i mean that's got more add-on body kit to it than than most that would just be kind of average here in southern california what engine does that one have average presentation that's a v10 i think by the way cadillac by then they were up to 500 cubic inches in that uh that popper blue rider there it's all the whole car culture in there it is in san bernardino county is so different look how beautiful that thing is uh and just how pristine it is how nicely restored but uh look at those uh little small low profile tires on the front and that thing is built to dance look how it dwarfs that poor little poor little mid-engine porsche in front of it those front tires look like those little mini spares used to get in the trunk of your car looks like they grabbed a couple of those and put on the front not far off with reddick beating briscoe off the pit road that gave him the advantage of having that preferred outside line again just like we had on the last restart if you chase briscoe you got to get down low get that thing rotated squirt the fuel across the center of the corner and beat him to that outside preferred line off of two you can't give tyler reddick that run that's his only chance whoever gets in my opinion when they come off the two who's on the outside is in the cat bird's seat pace car is in reddick and briscoe once again bring them to green christopher bell's car still sits motionless on pit road five wide looks like i-10 out there [Music] eric jones picked up five spots on that restart by going to the bottom of the racetrack and it was all a big run getting up through the gearbox he pushed hard as soon as he got across to the start finish line you could saw him peek to the inside bold move and it paid off [Music] how do you get from four wide in the middle of the corner to single foul or two wide down the straightaway how much of its give how much of its take yeah i mean it's kind of like a funnel you know you get through there as quickly as you can and you all have to funnel up to the top so when you're coming off the bottom you just have to use all the asphalt to get up to the wall to maintain your momentum so you get so much more momentum off the top but you get through the center of the corner much faster in the bottom so like clint says when you're on the bottom you want to get clear as soon as possible and get up in front of them and take that outside lane away for the straightaway flip side of that is look at the difference i take it back to the last restart i'm more over the win off of pit road you see chase brisk go back there mired in traffic now he doesn't have that preferred line the guys are squirting down to the bottom of him slide jobbing him up and now he's fifth or sixth on the sheet and he's in big trouble with dirty air in front of him keep an eye out for chase elliot he's back on the lead laugh he restarted 25th he is up to 18th and working his way through the field there he is third in this line [Music] also it's interesting if you look at the top four uh joe lagano all the way up to fourth place but all four of them just ran their fastest lap of the race and i would never think that you would see that almost halfway through the race now watch how eric jones gains four or five spots here on this restart fourth on the inside as they take the green had the run like i said he had the momentum as soon as he got to the bumper of joy legano to 22 he hung a left on him side dropped it off of him and look at the difference it made and he got through that center just fast enough to be able to slide back up off of turn two and not lose so much momentum now he's since giving up a couple of those spots whoa alex bowman got into the back of austin syndrick there yeah i'm not sure i can even call that a bump drop and for the lead here comes william byron this is such a hard thing to do right here matt as you get off into turn one making the pass like that there he did he crowded him try to beat him into the corner and that slide job getting up in front of him is so important you do not want to be in a position where you have to go down to the bottom of the corner scrubbing so much speed and like our camera view for those spotters it's tails away the spotters are looking at the tail end of the car going off into one there they can't clear you up and it still tells you that clean air is going to be very important probably one of the most important things you could actually see uh tyler reddick there behind the 24 instead of running the very top behind him in his tire tracks he had to split the seam and run down a half a lane just to get some clean air in that nose so we'll see if he can get caught back up let's go back two laps to the back straight away in that run alex bowman had yeah i see him coming off a turn two here and uh the the two and the 43 gets slowed down although the two pulls up in front of him and uh 48 was getting there in a big hurry probably didn't think he had that bigger run on him well here's what syndra team had to say [Music] that's my fault my man yeah it's tight just with the run he had it's okay though yeah like his crew chief told him with a run he had so he was plenty clear it's just uh he was going five miles an hour faster than he was and when you pull up in front of somebody and you're going that much faster even if you're clear they got a big run a lot of times they won't really appreciate and they'll give you a little bump to let you know that i had a big run and i would have appreciated the lane i was gonna say we heard the twos in card i want to hear the 4018 car total different story right there it's amazing how drivers can see the same race totally different or the same same incident totally different christopher bell made one lap and then went to the garage he may make repairs and come back [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] 95 laps to go in southern california william byron is leading time for our credit one bank ones to watch [Music] all right here it is my pick is a five car kyle larson big quiet all day long really all weekend long but man is picked up at this last pit stop air pressure adjustment whatever it is picking up speed running second kyle larson's my man clint chase briscoe in that 14 car they had a tough rookie season last year but he got that first career top five last week in the daytona 500 johnny clostmire the crew chief keep making the right adjustments and that pit crew keeps tickling off those nine second pit stops he's my one to watch yeah i'm going with tyler reddick he's led more laps today than he led all of last season and here at fontana speedway the winner of stage one has never lost a race they're undefeated so i'm going with tyler reddick joey logano has never won at this racetrack in the cup series he has three extended these series wins it has been circled he was tied earlier started in the back he's going forward this is the best his car has been i'm having so much fun watching and listening to daytona 500 champion austin cendrick learning by doing and the best doing is winning the last driver to win the first two races of a cup season matt kenseth 2009 and that's your credit one bank ones to watch a producer says matt that was the best that's ever been done oh yeah you're you get you get the gold star tonight that just made my day i can't believe i can remember that 31 cars on the lead lap here uh josh belicky down three kyle bush down four daniel hamrick down four christopher bell in the garage with mechanical issues and cody ware 14 laps back after a career best finish in the daytona 500. harvick started yesterday's practice with a spin backed it into the wall repairs were made this is the same car he has been in the middle of the lead lap pretty much all day definitely been struggling struggling to get out of that hole right when you wreck on the first lap of the weekend especially fixing the car running that car again a lot of a lot of learning right there but if anybody can figure this out it's kevin harvick in that four car this was a pretty hard hit and again we are so new into the life of this new car when he came off the wall after that can you fix it do you want to fix it and the answer for rodney childers was yes they said it took less time to make this repair than it would have been to get the backup car ready to compete if that was last year's car that is without a doubt 100 back up car go back to the shop cut the rear clip off of it a new body put on it a month down the road you may see it back at the racetrack yeah that was really surprising they could fix that car and fix it to look looks like brand new i know it's not running the way he wants but that's amazing you can hit the wall that hard and fix these things at the racetrack [Music] now we asked about ricky stenhouse he's had an up and down day the only place he hasn't been is up against the wall in that high high groove regan well mike it has been an up and down day that race car a couple runs ago started getting too loose for him he started losing a little bit of ground they've since made that car better he's not that unhappy with the race car the biggest issue though these restarts he keeps getting the wrong line and the caution is out that's a pretty hard hit for chris busher he was one of the drivers who spun yesterday without contact and busher was 14th and on the lead lap when that happened down there i think he's up in the middle of one and two yeah he heard his radio there say he blew a tire on entry so at lap 112 we have this race's sixth caution flag of the day and we're going to look uh through the windshield of curt bush on our monster energy cam yeah the wreck was kind of over by the time we could see it in the in the camera view there but you seen chris as he drove away he had a flat left retire the other three were up so he said blew a tire and entry i know a lot of people are trying to get low on air pressure to have good grip at the end of the run and i possibly got a flat left or a tire and that's what caused them to spin josh belicky will get one of his three laps back as the free pass card larry we've uh we've had six cautions already today how are we doing on tire allotment we're about halfway through them but the good news is we're just past halfway point of the race so we've run 14 laps mike so i would say feeding time on pit road as usual 18-inch wheels low-profile tires about an inch inch and a half wider than what used to be on these nascar cup cars and now they'll come in and get fresh ones jamie well kyle larson joins the party says it's the best the car has been all day they've been making small air pressure adjustments to help them this is the sixth stop for these teams of the day so far meanwhile tyler reddick on the right hand side hasn't said much about that numb left leg focusing on the race car it's good right now four tires stop air pressure again reagan william ryan your leader right now that race car is pretty good that's the last update from him they've been working on the front and rear getting a little grip and they finally found that the 43 car eric jones so strong all day long trouble on byron's left front took a long time to get that off and sparks blue [Music] here's your ram race off pit road tyler reddick back to the front eric jones good stop call custer great stop matt the feeling of coming off a pit road gaining five seven spots nothing like it it's a good feeling it's a lot easier to pass cars on pit road than racetrack for sure [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] race fans jesse punch here live again from auto club speedway standing by the 41 pit of cole custer cole already has a win on this racetrack and this weekend at that he won last night's xfinity series race bringing win number one to ss green light racing cole's been running around 10th and 11th today pretty steady run that last pit stop four tires in fuel business as usual for the 41. would you say what'd you say chris oh 87 laps to go at auto club speedway as they come to the one to go and the choose v painted on the asphalt where every driver gets lane choice eric jones is going to move up to the inside of the front row on this restart and you saw a second place car choosed outside as well as the leader of tyler reddick so the one that likes to run the top as much as tyler reddick is kyle larson so those two uh not surprising that they took the top and it's not like this just showed up but this is the first time that i've noticed it wasn't just follow suit right go staggered like always like you always did you're starting to see these guys really start to just uh distinctively choose what line they want to be in and a guy like eric jones being able we saw him squirt that bottom and gain ground now you're seeing guys use this choose cone to their advantage so here's chad kadaus in the 24 pip to try to review what happened on william byron's stop the leader tyler reddick got out with a stop that was six seconds faster than william byrons who came in as the leader and came out 17th here's team 24. anything i can do there no the nut didn't engage there's nothing to do with the wheels go away we'll get there stay focused long way to go got a really good piece stay focused byron will restart 17th [Music] tyler reddick eric jones kyle larson cole custer yesterday's winner was he on your fantasy team for today [Music] so [Music] see at 43 a lot like the last restart he really went through the bottom i wanted to really really fast he got through there fast enough to actually clear the leader i don't know how long you hold him off but it's doing a great job through that first set of corners the thing really has upfront speed in these runs i don't know if his pressures are up it's just the way the setup is but he has a ton of grip and comfort right off the bat where these other guys are kind of slip sliding around he's able to be very aggressive on the restarts oh and around goes kozlowski we'll just let it roll when it goes straight let it go straight you're not getting anything just go straight there you go you're good caution number seven lap 117. let's go back and see what as he re-fires let's see what happened to brad yeah there's brad you see him go all the way down to the apron on the bottom trying to get a run 22 sneaking outside of him here a little bit he just got loose he came off that bottom looks like he hit that bump and the rear of the car got upset and when he had to slow down a little bit and turn the steering wheel to the right to catch that car to keep her from spinning out he just got up in front of traffic and can hold it riding with austin well protect your right side here protect your right side half of the 12 same lane as you left right here in front really on the bottom really good job from brad there of not collecting more cars is not getting all the way to the wall and over correcting it and he spun it out but there was no harm no foul slid through the grass he's down in his pit stall getting tires and go try it again i want you to watch the 11 denny hamlin's whole career just flashed before his eyes there's logano in the 22 watch logano and hamlin will be coming into the picture on the inside right about here go brad go brad go brad that's what he said that was close right that was close he was as surprised as we were that he got through without hitting anything and here's what hamlin had to say good job i mean i'll take a look too but wow yeah that's a wow moment all right that's as close as it gets josh belicky is once again in line for the free pass there are no cars one lap down kyle busch three hemrick three wanna go back to william byron's pit stop and what we saw on the left front here so chad kanaus comes over to have a look at things and inspect the gun which is expected to retain the socket when it is removed and then thread it back on it's like it's stripped out and it wouldn't it looks like it's all golden up on the end of that thing i think it's stripped out well i think matt well let's check with regan well clint you're exactly right that's what happened to that pit socket right there as they tried to put it on and they didn't get it on properly it spun and stripped it out and kept stripping it out that was the sparks that you saw so they decided they're going to go ahead and change pick guns to a different one to be safe for the rest of the race well to matt's point the hub and that socket are not the soft aluminum that that nut is so sparks fly [Music] [Applause] [Music] huh [Music] [Music] um welcome back to fontana california we're going to hook up the wayback machine and go back exactly 10 years when matt kenzen scored his second daytona 500 win got to hoist the harley earl trophy and joins us today for a guest appearance with clint boyer and me well a little little different a little different payday a little different amount of fun and a different kind of pressure yeah i mean that was really fun but that doesn't hold a candle hanging out with youtube it doesn't get better oh geez well what have you learned matt it's so interesting to me to watch these drivers and these teams try to conquer this place try to conquer the task at hand you know we saw a different thing from what i think in qualifying trend that things were really bouncing around kind of like you saw with the six car of brad keselowski but you also have seen teams adapt right adapt in a big way to these conditions i think that's the biggest thing i think everybody was predicting disaster today and lots of cautions lots of rec cars after what we saw yesterday and today you haven't really seen it you've seen some trouble but yesterday in 15 minutes we saw more cautions than we've seen so far today so i think the drivers are just so good the teams the crew chiefs everybody figures out to take what they have how to adapt to it do the best they can with it and go out there and race them and you can see they're also building confidence they keep racing harder and harder you're seeing some bump drafting you're seeing side draft and they're out there racing hard now you're preparing for your next race the boston marathon how did yesterday here help prepare you for the hills of boston uh let's have a look and 198 for him action so that little scooter race was refreezed yesterday uh here at the speedway with barca loungers and somebody ended up on their lid and unhappy yeah that making that commercial with clint was a lot of fun um it was it was interesting clint said that was the most funny i ever had making a commercial before and uh and it was for me too um we could see what we're going to look like probably another that was the biggest thing it was almost scary though they did such a good job of making us old and i was like oh my god this feels like that someday i just hope that i make it to looking like that you looked older than me i'm gonna have to change my ways boys here we go let's go racing the boston marathon wow title reddick eric jones and kyle larson three camaros ahead of five fords and then denny hamlin's toyota as we go back to green [Music] 43 card did it again the five even tried to get down on his quarter pound slow him down just a little bit and he just rolls a center one and two so fast on that first lap he uh cleared both those rows of cars and got out front too wide behind us with the 22 covered top cover top covers that is eric jones spotter rick corelli who was one of the greats of the nascar truck series what you heard him say right there i heard mark barton talk about this when he was up here and it's exactly right you can't just change directions when you're at home and you see that car and he said clear our check you know protect high protect high it's not like you can just hang a ride in there and then redirect your momentum back to the left you've got to slowly do that methodically move up and try to you know close off that block alex bowman at the tail end of this group brushed the wall last time by reddick back to the lead over jones logano has fought his way to third larson fourth he had to move up to keep from hitting kurt bush cooper's got a little bit bent out of shape man then he moved down and got into chase briscoe in the 14 car there's three cars there they're all a little short of room yep but one thing it's showing us casual contact is not a problem for these new cars the other thing is showing and matt you alluded to it aggression's picking up we're starting to see a lot more aggression on these restarts it's go time start to get yourself established at the end of this stage you've got to make a push for the last runs of this race how about ross chastain had a really hard hit here he's up to 12th place yesterday in practice what did he tell you happened yeah he said his car bottomed out down there in the middle of the corner i talked to him just just a little bit i know he was a little sore he had a super hard hit said that was the hardest he's ever hit anything and uh sounded like the rear end bottomed out a little bit and then when he went to correct the car kind of snapped off the left through and put him straight up in the wall regan well mike it's been a great recovery for ross chastain after having going to that backup car from that wreck right now that race car not turning quite as good as he wants it to be the problem is he said i don't want to be any looser just leave it as it is for right now after yesterday i don't think i'd want to be loose either i'd want to have a little security in that race car no kidding that is uh actress eva longoria's tequila on that car but not in the bubba tank with a drop to the bottom there on the 34. jamie and bubba wallace had really fallen back and i went and checked they weren't overheating he was having a problem with the right front he said the car kept trying to steer to the bottom they came in and they made wedge adjustment to that right front yes you could make wedge adjustments on these new cars but they had to raise the hood and go under and make those changes but he's already gained about 10 spots now mike since the restart i would think if they're making a wedge adjustment on the front of the car it was dragging something on the body had to get it up off the track once you did that thing was turning but you heard him say it need to turn to the left that's a little bit confusing for me that you would have to go under the hood that's a pretty drastic wedge change inside now inside now clear [Music] looking over to austin dillon from daniel suarez 13th place is at stake here [Music] you're ready to play defense your bumper you see that 14 right there i'm just fixing to say it what a difference a restart makes he was leading this race now he's just getting past making a pass for the 15th land mid pack jack his teammate cole custer flip-flopped with him he was running there now he's in the top six well i guess i goofed because my son was doing his fantasy picks this morning and i texted him a group of numbers and he says did you mean the 41 and i said no i meant that and i gave him a different number i think i goofed back in ninth place benny hamlin look at the squad in that left rear tire that he had running really low air pressure trying to optimize that grip for a long run need to meet these things keep the air pressure as low as possible because it's doing nothing but build and build and build throughout these runs william byron has gained back three positions from where he restarted that's an aggravating thing as a driver right there you run the bottom and you clear a car you pull up in front you got room he pulls to your bumper you're like okay we're going to lock together and go down the straightaway faster instead they turn left hit get on your left rear pull you back and pass it back i know as a driver um that always used to be real aggravating but it's a tool you have to use traction's important 24's got a super fast car and he's trying to find his way back to the front as well it's almost a process on a track like this you you set them up and it takes a couple laps to make it do because you make a pass you hang on the outside you think you're in the perverted line he hugs if he hangs the left and drags you down now you start to process over again he's gonna get you in that corner eventually you'll get the job done last lap of stage two tyler reddick has uh opened it up on eric jones turning his fastest lapse of the race within the last half dozen here well i guess that explains it they're racing for the last stage point so that's uh that's totally understandable [Music] it's time to get established in these stage points they're so valuable as you go throughout this season i gave everybody a pass last week at the daytona 500 it's all about that harley j earl trophy now we need some stage points and tyler radek and company did it gonna be side by side for fourth well it was and uh blainey prevailed so it's reddick jones logano blaney larson custer syndrick almarola byron and hamlin gaining the stage points for the third time one driver has swept both stages at fontana the prior two won the race ouch 69 laps to go and one of our roof cams has taken a hit andy why don't you just run back run out there and fix that for us we here's how it happened to kyle bush happens that fast and uh ah don't worry we'll have it fixed by vegas kyle's had a tough day three laps down had a transaxle problem yesterday which they changed and today giving our toyota in-car camera a rough ride tyler redick your leader eric jones in second has run more laps in the top five today than all of last season combined that richard childress group and their satellite or affiliate teams they're having a great start to this season strength in numbers very impressed with that whole alliance i actually saw richard chillers down on their grid before the race and i i made comment to that and it shows he said everybody's working hard as a team has won with that alliance and i think the proof's in the pudding with what you see with eric jones in this 43 car joey logano ryan blaney t4 teammates in third and fourth kyle larson in fifth cole custer having a great day after yesterday's win william byron had a nice recovery uh up to ninth [Music] at the end of this stage and josh belicky three lucky dogs in a row he's going to be back on the lead lap it appears one handily yesterday but it took all afternoon that was a long xfinity series race red flag and all and this time pit road will be open jamie and tyler reddick it's been his day so far has led 72 laps hasn't set a whole lot on the radio just a little bit tight they've been making air pressure adjustments and it seems to be working and his pit crew is working they've been getting the job done all day long the 22 with joey logano fires off a little bit tight one to two laps he said all we need is a long run to show our strength air pressure four tires for the 22. reagan eric jones in the 43 has been good on the racetrack good on pit road as well as you see him slide to a stop there close to the line that race car was coming to him as the run went on he wasn't sure if he wanted to change or not needs just a little more turn off at turn two and austin centric continues to be strong the racetrack's getting tighter he wants his race car to be a little bit looser thanks regan tyler reddick eric jones joey logano hold stations denny hamlin up five and let me correct something i said earlier that center lock nut is steel as is the hub so it's steel on steel it is the wheel that is forged aluminum well you know every time we have a guest analyst usually clint handles the first end of stage one the guest handles the end of stage two we talked to tyler reddick so time to talk to this fella and after i mean you guys have a history matt yeah yeah this will be fun hey joey legano this is a voice you probably never thought you'd hear on the radio this is matt kenseth up in the fox sports booth how's it going what's up friend i'm doing good up here um looks like you had a good car today i know you had to start in the back uh uphill battle drove all the way up to third real close call off at turn four there with the six car dodged a bullet there so how are you feeling about the rest of the race uh everyone's getting more comfortable out here you know to start the race everyone was kind of tiptoeing around not sure what was going to happen and everyone was still concerned about qualifying so we'll make our track position fairly close and now it's uh it's a battle it seems like that one's fairly close eight pretty good at 43 is good but i think our long haul is probably the best of our auto club mustang here so i'm hoping for a long run i'm not sure we're going to get them yeah you know after yesterday i didn't think we would get more in a four lap run so today has definitely been improvement from that so good luck the rest of the way thank you two stages complete title reddick out front in fontana [Music] hey race fans jesse punch live from auto club speedway once again this time standing in the 10 pit box of eric almarola eric started the race 31st and after that last pit stop he's now up to sixth a stellar run for the driver who plans on retiring from full-time competition at the end of this season business as usual for the 10 team that last stop for tires and fuel no adjustments so gonna have to see how this final showing here at auto club shakes out for eric calmarola [Music] a little 38 special for sunday uh afternoon in southern california these drivers wanted cars that were hard to handle they wanted to be the difference makers and i'm telling you they have got their wish these things are definitely a handful all right 65 laps to go and the wisepower 400. tyler reddick has been out front for 74 of the 135 laps kyle busch took the wave around that puts him two laps down and it means he did not pit during this caution so he is in line for the free pass should cautions breed cautions here we come to the geico restart zone pada reddick eric jones austin centric way up high in that yellow deuce look at the launch he gets off the corner gets blocked for his trouble yeah he saw cole make that quick move he was probably hearing the same thing from his spotter about cover the top and get up there and uh he had a pretty big run on him there for for making that move but he got in the hole four wide oh trouble one car slides and saves and everybody scatters we stay green he's gonna go ahead and come down pit road yeah he's uh yeah i guess it's the only car we've seen not spin out had one of those in practice and saved it almarola was in sixth place [Applause] [Music] now he rolls all the way down pit road does not stop in his pit to stay on the lead lap [Music] show you yesterday and today for eric almarola yeah yesterday's is pretty awesome as you'll see here [Music] thing there clint you saw him hit that bump and you saw the stuff come out the back of the car with the rub blocks or diffuser whatever's hitting the ground back there was definitely upsetting certainly did the only thing that was i thought he was thought maybe he flat spotted a tires or something ah he's going to come back down pit road here yeah it looked like he could have kept going yeah regan clint's exactly right mike he didn't think he flat spotted when he came down pit road initially as he saved that race car soon as he got back on the racetrack right on the radio immediately tell the guys that he flat spotted him he's got to come back down again well that's going to be bad news for kyle bush who was in the free pass position but now josh felicia is one lap down and almarola is going to lose a lap alex bowman has jumped five positions since the restart and one lap ago he and cole custer both ran their fastest lap of the race so did denny hamlin i know they're making adjustments on these on these pit stops matt but it's amazing to me with different sets of tires with these different uh stops the gains and the losses and the performance of some of these cars prime example of the 48 car you know it's like he bolted these set of tires on the car responded to it again maybe the you know might have been some adjustments but really seems like we've seen some guys that really take advantage of that and some that it hurts them as well yeah i feel like there's been a lot a lot of movement there's been a few mainstays at the front but there's been a lot of movement throughout the field even the 22 coming from the back that we just talked to some guys falling back with pit stop issues driving back through the field i feel like there's been a lot of passing let's have a look at today's xfinity fastest laps not a reddick 173.8 at lap 123. now there is a speed trap but i don't mean the one on pit road it's entering turn number one at 192 mile an hour you just saw that i know we'll go back to it but that thing was tank swapping getting off into the corner have to be very careful and look how big that speed sign is it's not like the one as you're approaching the school zone you know down there in davidson but when you see that as a driver what's that do to you see that number you know it's it's fun because you can actually see it when you're in a car so sometimes in practice or maybe in a long run you'd you'd kind of peak you know as you're out there driving but it's neat to see i don't i don't think these guys are seeing it when they're racing or the guys that are running the top i certainly couldn't if i was running the top but it is uh it's really cool for the fans to see and uh actually we've been peeking down at it quite often as well one of the neatest things that i saw with it you can see with the in-car camera the vise i mean if you see his head turn over and look at it that stands the point 194 mile an hour right there you saw but the difference yesterday it was really cool when that wind changed directions a full 180 degrees difference the difference it made four mile an hour difference in the front straightaway that was cool you look at that sign to get ready to tell the cop that wasn't me that was that other car [Music] team track house 11th and 12th suarez and ross chastain with a nice recovery [Music] jamie daniel suarez having a nice run here they went the wrong direction on adjustments earlier but they ride at that ship now you see ross chastain right there going by when he wrecked yesterday that swore is his teammate suarez almost didn't practice because their only backup for this team went to the one card that's on his inside right there they did practice they learned a few things and so far today they're having a great run thanks jamie now william byron since that last restart is up four spots now they had that trouble on the left front and we heard possibly since these nuts have different threads on each side of the car so that the nuts always turning forward that perhaps the switch on the air gun was not the right way when that when that stripped out well you can certainly see how that could happen to somebody you know with reverse threads on that thing because of the fact that they need to be forward only single lug nut that would be easy to do that guy's probably been doing that a long time a lot of years and lefty lucy ready ty was always the name of the game right tyler reddick has led more laps today than in his entire cup career before today [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] leading eric jones by three tenths of a second joey logano and 235 players got all six questions right and will split clint's money ten thousand dollars up for grabs in the fox bet super six pending verification of eligibility congratulations a lot of good picks tells you to your fan base matt huh 135 new friends i got either that or you need harder questions what was the what was the over under on caution flags for today we all picked our i'd say we all me and my counterpart here picked uh it was 12 and we picked the under okay josh bolicki has limped around with a flat tire he has made it back to pit road corey lejoy making his second stop in three laps bit of attrition but tyler redick there's his career to date and today he's led 87 of 149 laps and won both stages i tell you what eric jones is not letting him get away he's been dogging him here for several laps he's working a little bit lower on the track to keep some clean air in that nose and it looks like tyler that's the second time we've seen him wiggle just a little bit loose earlier clint mentioned how he wiggled getting into turn one and he just had a little wiggle off turn two there as well another thing i see on the 43 on the front grill you see some debris right there and any little chrome in this sport as tight as things are helps i can't help it to think maybe a little bit more downforce on the front of that thing you know what giving trash they said you can't put tape on it they didn't say anybody else couldn't well that's true what might help is a sunday nascar on fox crank it up [Music] [Music] balance check here down the back [Music] what has happened to tyler reddick jamie he just radioed to his team i got a vibration he's saying it's a right rear flat his team getting up on the wall trouble for our leader here as he drops oh he just got hit he hits the wall guys and william byron is involved and now caution waves ninth caution of the day well it definitely went from bad to worse right there for tyler reddick but including william byron he was making his way back up to the front huge blow for them i think that tire's blowing out you alluded to it early with chris busher maybe possibly running those things too low on air and eventually got the best of it yeah i didn't mean to jump in on the crank it up there but i saw the edge of the camera rubber fly off the back of his car and immediately slowed up i think he blew left retire right down there and turned one yep there it is now cars getting through on the inside william byron is not one of them that was really odd that was really late it'd be interesting to see the whole view if there's some other cars around him but then he got loose and had to catch it that was quite a while after he was he was going slow up against the top redick has made its his way to his pit with caution out i believe byron was starting to get out of his car man that's kind of a bummer for tyler as well because i think he was going to be okay he just needed left to retire on it was trying to get it lit back there and i got some contact somehow we're going to ride with daniel suarez in 10th place see which lane here looks like they're sliding down their slides now [Music] the way he hit him it was as if he didn't see him so that tells me he got loose under him or something had to catch it and had to you know move up the racetrack and got into him but it was a kim road is open jamie and the penske teammates are pitted side by side ryan blaney in the 12. joey logano in the 22. joey's saying just a little too free on entry still looking for that long run he feels like that's his strength the 12 of ryan blaney needs to be a little bit freer air pressure adjustment in four regan alex moment in the 48 car has been steady all day long just consistent with that race car right now it's bouncing too much which is causing him to get loose and then messing up his exit he can't get off the corner like he wants the 43 of eric jones the words were simple i'm happy with it leave it alone [Music] what was looking to be a great day for chevrolet suddenly two of their strongest are sidelined tyler reddick has left pit road back in the race william byron will get towed back there's your race off pit road alex bowman picking up two spots he will now carry the flag for chevrolet along with eric jones that's how close it was [Music] wow yeah it'd just be interesting to see what happened before that that was kind of late and it's kind of a small view of just those two cars it'd be interesting to see the well here we got a view earlier in the corner yeah he got loose under him it's exactly what i thought at the angle he hit him and how fast he was coming up you knew something had to have happened right there certainly saw him try to make an adjustment pulled on the wheel probably got on that seam the way it went and right into him but devastating blow for two of the strongest cars that we've had today though now look at the damage there on reddick's car between the wheels so yeah but he hit the right side hard i look for the damage on the right side to hurt it way worse than what we see on the left maybe not hopefully not eric almarola gets the free pass he is back on the lead lap denny hamlin will start in the back too fast exiting pit road jamie and reddick just told his team this car is undrivable he said it's weird it feels like the two front wheels go wherever they want so they're going to bring them in here again and take a look at it see if they can fix the problem and at least finish this race it was looking like a breakout race for him until the damage yeah right really scene point down i think it's towed out yeah you can hear him yelling in the background totally you see it right there it's way toed out man independent rear suspension means it's adjustable but also when something that happens it can adjust itself toe out in the rear undrivable nine caution flags so far we started with a five wide salute and we've had some five wide racing on restarts kyle busch trouble early bringing out the first caution at lap 16. lap 38 it was chase elliot into the wall and caution number two josh felici spun at lap 53 and then here remark truex gets up there austin cendrick gets into kyle larson tyler reddick stage one winner at 65 laps he would go on to win stage two when eric almarola had this save very similar to the one he had saturday in qualifying [Music] and just now tyler reddick gets a flat and william byron gets loose underneath him and makes heavy contact [Music] yeah that's such a disappointment he's been doing everything right all day he's led the whole race won both stages had a flat just trying to work his way back there and unfortunately got caught up in that here's your progressive race summary eric jones is the leader for chevrolet one of seven leaders 24 lead changes and 28 cars on the lead lap this is the ninth caution flag of the day if i were tyler redick after his race at the coliseum and what's happened to him today i don't know if i'd be looking forward to sonoma yeah you know the other race in his homestead i'm pumped up about the cars my boys are bringing me i'm leading laps i'm running up front doing everything you keep knocking on that door it's going to happen i want to give credit to this kid man i'm telling you i have even criticized him before being too high too quick getting into the wall and taking himself out of that thing with the old car that damage on the right side is completely out of his control he held a pretty wheel did his job inside that race car things will happen for him in the future so to be chevy ford on the front row jones logano bowman and larson two hendricks chevys in row two cole custer and chase elliott so three of team hendrick up at the front rookie stenhouse daniel suarez paul sitter austin syndrome with brad keselowski row six chastain and truex and all lead lap cars back to tyler redick and 28th mike looking at chase elliott in that nine car 30-something laps ago he was on pit road and they were there for a minute and a half making right rear adjustments on that nine car whatever they did it has brought it to life 45 laps to go at auto club speedway in this second points race of the nascar cup season las vegas next week then on to phoenix and atlanta [Music] [Music] it's a little bit interesting to me the 43 had control of the race and chose the the outsides of the inside he's had so much good fortune on inside every single restart just flying through one and two on the bottom coming out with the lead a lot of times off of turn two uh chose the top this time and uh let a couple guys slide by him chase elliot coming out of turn two he just about slammed that door off its hinges well he slammed the door off the hinges for the 48 car but that shows how important that is you have to get up there that window closes so fast off the two if you don't get it closed you're going to wish you did probably back in about 15. now nascar has the restart under review making sure that eric jones was the first car to fire off in the geico restart zone it's okay to beat the control car to the line but it is not okay to hit the gas trouble turn two kozlowski and more i think walt is that wallace the restart was fine we are told and harrison burton is torn up for the second week in a row through nothing of his doing he was the third car in after bubba wallace 10th caution flag so at least brad keselowski bubba wallace and harrison burton involved coming out of turn two and that funnel you talked about matt it's just almost like the bottom of it closed right up yeah like glenn was saying you gotta try to get in that hole to get to the top because you lose so much momentum off the bottom when they all stack up we'll see here what what what caused it but you just have so much momentum down there it looks like bubba's trying to squeeze up in the middle here and got brad in the left rear and uh started the accident cendrick in it and then burton yeah brad was coming down he was splitting that up i mean in all fairness brad was coming down but the option you either wreck yourself right there or you lift out of the gas he didn't lift out of the gas here's bubba wallace until the six are just lost fighting that all day well let's ride with our pole sitter austin sendrich had the front row for this one you see brad moved down off of that line he was straddling that seam on the outside and moved down into his lane and you heard bubba maybe he lifted out of the gas the front end took off in the wake of brad but nonetheless they got together right there and run both of their days you're totally right when you look at that other uh other angle brad was a little bit above that seam it looked like he wanted to get down on that third lane in between the seams and at the same time he heard bubba say he was losing the nose getting tight and they just came together you know cendrick got pretty hard into bubba's number 23 but i don't it doesn't look like cinderick has much damage from that harrison burton not so fortunate [Music] [Applause] i don't know that brad's car is tore up all that bad right there he's certainly going to lose some laps trying to get it back to pit road yeah it didn't look like he was very tore up we couldn't see the left side very good a couple cars bumped into his left side door a little bit but the right side looked good and the back didn't hit very hard and into the sun off of two like that you can see anybody coming behind them you can't see a thing you're listening to that spotter and hoping he's telling you right oh that's cool trickle stuff right there so now brad is in the car and this is a procedure change nascar talked about this morning if a car cannot move under its own power but can be flat-towed back to its pit that is what they will do that saves time get the car back in time for the crew to repair that car and get it back out there if possible i think cindrick might have gotten more damage from the wall than he got from going around off off of the six and the 23. bubba's made it back to pit road and the free pass will go to daniel hamrick [Music] so 10 caution flags and with all of the stops that we've seen with 41 laps to go each team should have three either new or maybe just scuffed sets that they held over from qualifying so pit road still closed kirk bush has had his issues today but has worked his way back to the middle of the lead lap 16th right now after starting tail end for inspection problems meanwhile kyle who came in as the favorite has had a really rough day he uh took a wave around got himself up to two laps down and that's where he sits in 27. we're going to the bush's hometown next week las vegas the engines fire up next sunday at 3 eastern time on fox and on the fox sports app for nascar cup racing in las vegas [Music] brad kozlowski's car has been pulled to its pit stall and will be released there just one stall behind bubba wallace where the right front fender is gone just as it was at the end of the daytona 500 he had uh i think a left front gone didn't deter him from a second place finish you go back to that finish last week if austin sindrick doesn't move up to block the advance of ryan blaney he doesn't win the 500 if he doesn't then immediately come down to block the advance of bubba wallace he doesn't win the 500. what he did was so precise and timed so well it was the only possible outcome to get him to victory lane coming off turn four to the checkered flag that's on his side too and we're looking at ryan blaney i'm going to say this as well if it wasn't his teammate it would have been a different outcome checkers what happened the week before or the year before with brad and joey not it happened i think it'd have been a different outcome that was a bold block you're right but it was also good teamwork by blaney to stick in the wall and lift out of the gas sure was jamie that was a tough one for blaney to swallow they talked a little bit after daytona but still upset about it the 12. now they have had trouble just like last week getting that right rear off you watch them right here they have struggled looks like it's going on a little bit easier like it should this time around regan ricky stenhouse jr good early in this race lost the handle for just a little while now this car's back better they decided to go ahead and take the tires here do something different needed just a little bit of front turn all right do you come or don't you whoa kell custer well he made it inside or did he i think he did all four the rule is all four below the yellow line not the grass yeah that line in right there so i think he was definitely below the box well that's interesting guys we had run a total of one and a quarter laps and those guys that pitted they came and got four more fresh tires the one thing that does do is that last pit stop now i think cautions were gonna make up for it it was right there on the threshold of being able to make it to the end and that's based on a 200 lap race with no overtime these guys that just pitted right there we know they should be good now so the first five in your running order last pitted at lap 153 stanhouse of blainey just came in cedric dillon also making stops we're gonna step away for a second but you won't miss a thing we're gonna take you fox side by side [Music] hey race fans jesse punch here live from auto club speedway tyler reddick the eight car back out on the racetrack following that incident with the 24 of william byron but not without a substantial amount of damage the eight pit crew behind me noticeably frustrated at the situation while trying to repair that race car understandably so considering they had won both stages and were on their way to a win however the fact that the race cars back out on the track is already an improvement considering tyler was originally reporting the car undrivable i'll keep you updated from down here in the pits jesse punch from auto club speedway [Music] so [Music] spring football april 16th the usfl is coming and it kicks off with an historic game as new jersey takes on birmingham in prime time on both fox and nbc don't miss it 37 laps to go at auto club speedway and the wise power 400 the 25th nascar cup race at this track comers and goers with joey logano now at the top and kyle larson eric jones has had a banner day chevrolet is in second through seventh right now and some nice surprises daniel hamrick at one point was six laps down he had shifter trouble and other problems but between wave arounds free passes and pitch strategy hamrick is back on the lead lap [Music] look at the california drivers who have found victory lane 11 out of 31 home state drivers and tyler reddick was hoping to add his name to that list today maybe kyle larson currently second though he's already done so we knew it was going to be wild i didn't think it would be this much difference of and you said it just movement within this race everybody's had their time in the sun i mean reddick was obviously the dominant force in the car of the race when in both stages but holy cow a guy like joey logano leading this race he's been all over the place mid-pack jack to the lead in the pack larson the same way i mean all of your big experience big name drivers you expect and then eric jones a guy like him leading this thing i love what i'm seeing out of this product all right matt where do you want to restart high or low oh the clinton says hi i always say low so if i'm driving a 43 low i think if you're anybody else i think the 22 will take the top and i think you say that because it's 43's how it takes it's been so strong down there on restarts but i think everybody else if if you have the top it doesn't mean you need to be in lane five you just need to be in lane two through five so you can still run lower on the track assuming you get into turn one this is where it gets interesting for me mid pack and beyond this you're listening your spotter tell me all right how many cars on the bottom how many cars on the outside that is where you have the ability to be in the right lane and you say there's a preferred line say it's on the outside take the bottom gain a couple rows but more importantly try to forecast what's going to happen when you get down in the middle of the corner try to squirt that middle because with 36 laps to go 35 laps to go it's time to you got to go for it shoot the middle do whatever you can do all right joey logano's team oh what's going on here with the clutch photos about going that's why i'm not saving any fuel but like no throw in the clutch we're going to have issues with to make another pit stop it's now fully disengaging and it's getting worse clutch issues for logano well this race has had some nice surprises we mentioned daniel hamrick who's back up on the lead lap in 25th place b.j mccloud running 24th got the first free pass of the day back at lap 16. he has been on the lead lap ever since the ebb and flow of this race uh has gone nice nice run for live fast that clutch issue where it really comes at start interrupt where it comes into play trying to get that thing back in gear if you're in the pit area you're in you know getting your fuel and everything you're in neutral and when you push that clutch in to try to get it it's just like that old farm truck you know you had to kind of let out on the clutch a little bit to do it well it's already out you put that thing in gear and it wants to take off fortunately you don't need that clutch to come up through the gears because here we go side bumper barely quick clear up clear of half over the back he's gonna get there you're quick clear you're quick clear you're good got it logano spotter he heard that spotter you can kind of tell he wasn't quite sure he was listening to mirror he was seemed like he was more sure than the spotter was he did it kind of almost cleared himself what it sounded to me like pretty important clear isn't it yeah and i think that's the trust you have with working first with a spotter for a long time he got you kind of understand his tone of voice it's not always what he says a lot of times is how he says it and you kind of anticipate a little bit there and uh and and make that move sometimes before he can call it you see an old-fashioned slide job right there out of a dirt racer oh third place right behind them three wide and coming right up through the middle is blaney there is no rush hour like afternoon rush hour in southern california that was a lot going on for a straightaway right there rick hendricks camaros now first fourth and fifth larson elliot bowman all have had their issues today penske forward second and third oscars is going to say how about blaney joining his teammate logano up there fellaini is starting to show up i want to again one of those names that haven't really seen much of all of a sudden here he is he's been patient and smart all day and he's there well there then when he's counting right now said he hadn't been anywhere sixth eighth fourth pretty much been in the money all day still there's 22. still their corner back even just a 22 by six behind him [Applause] second place at stake there and don't look now but guess who just popped into the top 10 for the first time today the closer kevin harvick i told you if anybody can figure it out that's that man right there never gives up somehow some way always seems to be there when the time's right [Music] one back to four one laying down arvik looking for ninth place against daniel suarez [Applause] hamlin with him no it went underneath of him passing both the o2 for two for one how about that better get up though here comes the 99 [Music] 99 had to lift out of the gas trying to beat him around there was and he'd get into the position drove a push into it had to lift back out of the gas keep from knocking the wall down maximize your throttle time on exit of four right here so maximize your throttle time that means try to figure out how to keep that throttle down you saw it right there he did the same thing in one and two in my opinion he got on the gas too early couldn't stick with it when he lifted you saw the difference that it made almost two car lengths gained from kevin when he when he got i have to lift out of the gas excuse me the 11. yeah when you gotta lift late in the corner like that you lose so much momentum sometimes it takes a whole nother lap to really get going and get back in that same rhythm and same lap time and same speed and momentum that you had before did it right there as well you heard him have to get out of the gas on the exit of the corner so what do you do there matt how do i get this thing to where i can you know throttle down all the way up off the corner not have to give up yeah i mean i think you just keep working on your corner entry stuff you know sometimes when you try not to drive in so hard you're getting in the gas earlier and then sometimes you build so much momentum you actually have to lift again later so i think it's just all about all about the entry and obviously you're handling there's a lot of times where you just can't do it but just not giving it too much throttle too early kyle larson holding an eighth tenth of a second lead over ryan blaney jamie and the first time that kyle larson has led today talked to cliff daniels as crew chief this morning he said listen today is the first time we will get a data point an accurate data point on this new car we want to be on the smart side not the desperate side today they have been smart taking care of their equipment reminding his driver to take care of those tires and look he went from the back to the front when it counted most ross chastain turned four a lot of smoke down to the inside everybody it looks like it's going to get through chastain had been finally having a great day working his way up to sixth place looks like he's gonna be stuck as well so when the front wheels are on the banking and the rear wheels are down on the flat it's going to be hard to get that car moving yeah again it looked like the left ear is possibly on that seam uh trying to run down the 43 car there just a little lower than him it was kind of the same area where that bump is and uh just seemed like it just broke traction so quick he couldn't catch it kind of that same area where that tunnel goes through and that pump and it does such a good job of digging out of the hole you know getting back up through the pack i know it buddy that's exactly what he thought i'd say he had his pick right yep yeah it's so disappointing too he didn't hit anything i think his car is going to be fine by the time you know he'll get it get it fixed get back out there but he's got some some ground to make up kyle busch will get the free pass and will go from being two to now just one lap down the way this race has been going he'll be on the lead lap before we're done matt i brought you in for your intelligence we did this that was your first mistake we did this pre-race and we said no way to chris myers as it gets to 12 cautions buddy we're in trouble yeah we both we both took the under and we can make it right now if they go to then this is number 11 as you look at second place ryan blaney i think we're going to lose big question is who's going to win and before that who's going to pit larry everybody will pit because you just saw ryan blaney he's one of those that came to pit road that last caution he basically went from outside the top 10 to second in about six laps the big thing you gained by pitting here yeah we've run six laps but you're gonna have fewer laps to get to the end of this race a few guys we have not seen much of today austin dillon came back from a speeding penalty early he is eighth we talked about cole custer who won yesterday who is in 12th place and behind custer michael mcdowell 13th solid run justin haley started this race out back there's mcdowell in 13th haley started the race out back he is in 16th place coming from the last row and ty dillon in 21st for petty gms motorsports bottom your screen here's blaney in that run you're talking about on fresh tires and bowman on the outside when i said he slammed the door off the hinges that was the move right there two doors off the handle all right you know new tires don't only give you the speed uh the handling the grip this goes with the grip but it also gives you the confidence to make those kind of moves you just have that so much more stick than other people even after a lap in a cycle and getting the tires warm you're out there with stickers and it feels so good you've got so much maneuverability and everybody else is sliding a little bit that you can make moves like that but you have to do it quick that that goody comes out of those tires so fast that window of opportunity before everything neutralizes from you and somebody that only has maybe a couple laps more on their tires it'll neutralize so him and and uh you know being able to go get up on the wheel and make that bold move right there i don't know that he heard that spotter say anything he was headed up absolutely it all happens in the beginning of the run you know how many times you've been out there and you say well you have 10 lap fresher tires in that guy but you're already 30 laps into a run and it's really hardly any difference but those first couple laps when you have fresher tires is a huge difference now the reason pit road has not been opened is they were towing ross chastain back to his pit stall need to get him positioned unhooked to open pit road chastain is now two laps down along with kyle busch and todd or reddick lejoy and kozlowski and belicky three laps down cody ware 14 down and out of the race burton byron buscher and bell and if you're joey logano we heard him say having clutch issues gonna be very important try to figure this out hopefully that long run maybe it cooled off maybe he got some pedal back in it all right jamie here they come kyle larson doing a nice job a four-time winner on two mile ovals cliff daniels right there on the wall telling his driver bring it to us kyle said he's good he liked that clean air up there four tires right here they'll get just enough fuel to make it to the end meanwhile the 12 of ryan blaney in his pit box hopefully they have a good stop like last time when they were able to get that right rear off and it looks like they do that the 22 is teammated as well regan alex bowman in the 48 car they've been all over the place with the balance good bad good bad right now just a little bit too tight in traffic as he's running the top five of the nine at chase elliot a great recovery he can't lean on that right front quite as much as he wants to chase elliot darted out of his pit stall out of his pit stall to the outside lane to beat everybody off pit road and now it is team hendrick one two three i cannot believe we're seeing that card back leading this race he hit the wall hard he's had an eventful couple days that's pretty amazing job him and uh ellen done to come back from that chase briscoe did not pit neither did garrett smithy or b.j mccloud i just don't have a good feeling about that with with six laps on the tires and basically everybody behind you is gonna have fresh sticker good years i i've always said follow the leader you follow the leader but i'm not sure about that call right there i guess the play would be hoping another caution comes out and very soon 25 laps to go [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] this thursday your favorite drivers come to fs1 it's nascar race hub game night you'll have your head spinning and you at home can guest along as well chris myers hosts a driver studded showdown what city in texas did we form zz top don't miss hendrick motorsports face off against track house racing as kyle larson and william byron take on daniel suarez and ross chastain yeah i feel like i'm gonna embarrass myself come play with us it's race hub game night this thursday 6 p.m eastern only on fs1 [Music] i don't know lagrange that was one of their first big hits [Music] i'm only going if you're my teammate there's no chance i do that show without you uh who knows we might get asked i know i embarrass you a lot but let me tell you so i will embarrass you on that there we go chase briscoe has led more laps today than he had in his entire brief cup career coming into today as did tyler redick who was out front for 90 laps briscoe has now led the second most laps it'll be 20 when they come around and get ready to go green chase elliot is second he spent 26 laps of this race two laps behind and another 26 laps one lap down now he's in position to try to win it if he can at all hold these guys off through one and two come off of turn two still in the lead man it would go a long ways to a good run and possibly a win here but these fresh tires are going to be hard to handle green flag [Music] still five's already pushed somebody out to the lead and then dove underneath of him which is that's what you see right there saw it earlier in the race chase is just not going to be able to hold his own up there briscoe on old tires fading fast kyle did a great job on that restart he pushed him on the straightaway where he's stable and as soon as he got to the corner he made sure he picked a different lane because those little tires weren't going to hold on for more than a corner joey to the bottom i was watching joey in the pits he got out of his pit stop fine it looked like that clutch issue you know didn't 48 in the wall and bowman in the wall entering three handful who's going to be in the lead right here is the caution going to come out no we're still green and both think chase might have hit the wall there he definitely hit the wall now bowman has made it to pit road no caution flag i think clint your eyes got bigger than his yeah here's another one trying to go for the twofer he shoots up looked like kyle was going to thought he was going to go with him and he shot to the outside to try to get the outside kyle moved up to the block and it was too late stuck him in the fence nice recovery by chase elliott man and alex bowman just jumped out from underneath of him maybe on the scene he hit hard [Music] chase elliott on the radio was not happy with his teammates abrupt move to the top i don't think you want to hear what he had to say jamie kyle larson's radio kyle said i didn't know he was there [Music] that will be of little comfort it's got to be hard to have teammates in a situation like this you can't look out for them can you well hey the way i see it as a teammate you're thinking a teammate is going to help you push you by the guy that you're having trouble with side to side in a drag race he stuck him three wide he made the block and unfortunately you know could have wrecked him both right there well it'll be an interesting radioactive on race up this week that's for sure third fourth fifth austin bill and daniel suarez eric jones look at him wheel this thing all the way up off the corner i've seen it with alex bowman right there loose into the wall it's pretty amazing these guys in the effort that they've put in to this race driving their butts off and austin dillon running third i feel like we haven't really talked about austin today and i just look up at the scoreboard and there he is in third you can't figure it out it's that way although all day long it's been that way he spent over a hundred laps recovering from that speeding penalty back at lap 38. 18 to go larry how hard do you want your driver running right now are you planning on at least one more caution well i wouldn't rule it out mike but you it's go time as my man clint says the pay window is just about open because if you give it up now you're probably not going to get it back [Music] just can't quite clear him right there made a good dive now he gets up and is able to at least hang on to his side can't know gonna have to fall back in line the stability in this 43 is very impressive he's able to shoot to the bottom run the outside hasn't really been out of shape all day long that car is handling well for him and we saw that in qualifying we were talking about the bumps going into turn three through the middle of three and four that his car seemed like it rode smoother than a lot of the cars that we saw on camera nice run for mcdowell and hayley you saw their 10th and 12th kirkbush in the middle of them little teammate there see he's pushed him right by kurt bush can he make the pass daniel hamrick's not going to run that many races for calling in the cup series this year but he qualified in the top ten overcame a shifter problem and emerick's in the mix in 13th look at the difference so when kurt cut down across his nose did you see how bad it floated uh uh justin hayley's front end right there crossing that wake it took all the air off his nose really washed up and now he got past yet once again yeah when you're with the trailing car you want to be offset to the left at all times so when you're going there and somebody pulls in in front of you you know across the nose and puts you behind her on the outside right side of their car it definitely upsets you sorry the flip side of that was so cool to see austin hendrick he saw that coming ran the outside got that run down the front straightaway and passed both of them right there kyle larson legging it out now half a second up on legato austin dillon another 1.3 back locked in a battle with suarez and eric jones get it right here wanted to one time here we'll get some clean air that was 99 audio chevy ford three chevrolets then fellaini hamlin is the first toyota he's in seven [Music] what a job right here the old honky tonks looking good taking kitten rock for a ride daniel suarez in the track house bunch man top five run right here huge shot in the arm for them gotta close it out daniel jamie a lot of cheerleading going on in that 99 camp spotter talking to his driver commit to the top great left and he gets into the wall he just told him to commit [Music] i'm never giving praise to anybody again i jinxed him i'm telling you it happened at daytona and now it's happening again i was just gonna say that's why you never tell anybody how to drive [Music] here's another look hard pitched battle here for third place in the closing dozen laps it's hard to commit to that top you know there's some guys that are really really good at our naturals it seems like a lot of the guys that used to race dirt are really good at it i was always terrible at it and when i would try to commit to the top i could but the first lap would be a second slower then maybe you'll be eight tenths slower like it takes a while to get that momentum there's some guys that can just do it instantaneously but a lot of guys can't it just takes a while to get that rhythm know what it feels like get your lift points uh get all your all your marks back and to get that going the other thing that's really hard and is exactly where he hit that sun's going down as you get off into turn three it's blinding getting on there you're trying to figure out where it's at where it's at too late there it is kyle larson has come from the back to now lead this race by 1.6 seconds with 12 laps to go into a little dust up there with chase elliot no contact between them but elliott got up and into the wall and now he's close to going a lap down to his teammate [Music] definitely showed his displeasure right there and rightfully so it was a bad deal and larson's really starting to stretch out he's been a couple tons faster than the second place car here for a few laps i've been watching kind of chose a different line right there it's like the three and a half markers straddling that marker in uh you know and one and two in between the third lane and the fourth link [Music] and logano may fall into the clutches of austin dillon here and this is where i think that alliance that we talked about with rcr you know jones is part of that i can't help it to think matt that maybe some air pressure some things like that that they were doing it worked well for them maybe that that information was you know transferred over to the three of austin dillon made those adjustments and here he is yeah it seems like all those cars are running well you know the more cars you're affiliated with a lot of times when one runs good they'll all run well and vice versa if they're having an off day and they totally missed something on the sim or something they were thinking about doing this week they probably all have to work through it kenny hamlin's moved up to sixth he's the leading toyota behind three chevys and two fords you can see that in car they're talking about the view it's not only the sun setting but we've talked about these cars and how much sand comes off this race track and off that diffuser and how pitted everybody's windshields get by the end of the day and you can see visibility is tough getting into turn three [Music] that's daniel hamrick behind kurt bush they are 12th and 13th listen and wheel that thing throttle down up off the gas pedaling it baby it's so different from last time we were here two years ago chase elliot after going a lap down turns it around and caution waves that would be the 12th caution flag uh the larson fans are no happier than kyle larson right now who might have had victory in sight now here's some nine team audio just prior to chase's spin somebody watch a replay and make sure that i'm seeing things straight that i was way in there on that deal before i say anything i should yeah man that's what you saw i don't know what else to tell you all right we'll take a look at it [Music] larson said on his radio i didn't know he was up there yeah i mean when you watch this from watch on tv you could say well he turned extra to the right however when you're in a race car if you truly don't know he's there you're going to start going toward the wall to get your ark into the corner he already got the side draft off the inside car he got his momentum got that guy's momentum slowed down you're going to break off them after you get that momentum and enter the corner so only they really know what happened so larry here we are eight laps to go under caution it's a no-brainer mike we've run 13 laps as i say smoke them if you got them everybody's got a set this will be a critical pit stop for these crews we've seen all kinds of issues all day long now chase elliott continues one lap down we have 23 lead lap cars and kyle busch will get his lap back he's the free pass jamie defending series champion leading this race kyle larson cliff daniels said we need to come in let's take four kyle's feedback was that was the best the car has been on the long run definitely better than the prior run and the 22 of joey logano just a little bit snug but best it has been as well it's like the hotter the track has gotten these cars have come to life regan eric jones working his way back forward with a 43 car after losing some track position that car is just a little bit too tight in three and four needs more help on takeoff in the 11 at denny hamlin he's showing up up front off all of a sudden here he's free on exit or needs to be freed up on exit a little this is the money stop let's see how they come off pit road larson with suarez with a big jump stenhouse and harvick improving their lot on pit road how about that how about that yes great job guys right here [Music] how about that indeed yeah it's gonna be an interesting restart you know the five is obviously the best car but it took him a few laps to get away from the guys around him uh really unfortunate caution there for kyle he definitely had a victory in sight hopefully he'll uh have a good restart here and see a good race then and joey logano said his car was better on long runs not short runs yeah but i think o'leary if i have that problem i'm going to ask larry hey you think you could pump them air pressures up a little bit get me going on a short run because i need it no question i guarantee you they put some air in those tires to make them come in much quicker considering we're probably only going to have five or six laps to go michael mcdowell may go a lap down here he was very slow getting on to pit road as the field comes off turn four he's still in his pit stall by the way clint you go up there and get me a trophy i'll give you as much air pressure as you want i'm about you matt but i had trouble with that sometimes if they you know didn't get that right and pump those pressures up it almost changed the balance on my car and and i i remember wishing man i don't know if we should have done that or not because i i wasn't tight pumped them pressures up and made me really tight and couldn't get it rotated yeah it's hard to say i think it's changed through the years you know there's there's a time when some of those new pavement tracks love to have a lot of air but it seems like lately the lesser seems to almost make more grip you know you go your fastest slap your first lap even in race trip so so yeah i i don't really know i think if you end up winning a race you think what your crew chief did was was perfect and genius if you lose you're probably it's probably his fault as a driver that's what you're going to say last three cautions i've noted garrett smithy and b.j mcleod would wait and pit with the lap down cars they've been lead lap cars most all day and i see now what they're doing they're each pitted in between cars that are contending for the win so instead of pitting with them and blocking somebody's exit from the pit that has a chance to win this race they make a courtesy stop a lap later nobody in the way coming in or out so attaboy to both smithly and mcleod daniel suarez is lined up second behind kyle larson how about this for all before if you see it trust your instincts over me it's really tough coming straight at me there to call within a foot so if you feel like you have it take it that's frank kimmel the second suarez spotter choose coming up here four of the last ten races here have ended with a last lap pass chevy's will be on the front row then logano and dylan then jones and stenhouse then harvick and hamlin almarola with a nice recovery and blaney round out the top 10. so larson to the top choose wisely suarez to the bottom pretty much odd even as we go here although briscoe stayed up top and gave up a row for doing so still 23 cars on the lead lap i believe michael mcdowell may have taken his car to the garage yes i think the thing to watch on this restart is how hard does the 22 push the five you know he's going to try to lock onto the five and push him and he's going to try to stay attached to him as long as he can and when you get to the corner make a move most likely to the left but wherever there's room to try to make her make a move get on one side or the other try to get a little side draft slow him down and try to make your pass there because if if he gets off a turn two with a car like they're two lead it's probably gonna be tough to pass so then if you're austin dillon in the second row on the outside how do you handle daniel suarez ahead of you we'll see yeah i mean i think everybody's going to push the front guys as much as they can i feel like since since the 5 and 22 are on the outside and the 5 has the uh the race control he's going to be in the throttle first be rolling first i feel like that outside lane with joey's experience and how good he pushes and drafts and does that type of thing that the outside's definitely going to have the momentum and i feel like they'll be clear when they get down to one but we'll see well this is the finish that this packed grandstand came to see and nobody is sitting down they're all on their feet here in fontana california as the toyota camry trd pace car goes to pit road and here they come it'll be four laps to go larson outside suarez inside and they are even coming past the line he almost did [Music] eric jones with a good run off the top he's the third car back on the outside he's led a lot today down to the bottom goes legato watch the push from the 43 eric jones pushing on daniel with suarez here comes a run dylan to the bottom trying to make something happen doesn't have quite the run off the corner but the top lane did [Music] he's getting pushed a little now he's off three lanes [Music] [Music] larsen by a car lake three chevys fighting it out for the win you heard daniel really shoot down to the bottom of track in three and four and have to lift big time up off the corner you heard the spotter earlier in that last run trying to coach him needed a better uh exit off the turn four dylan in the draft his chance to make a run at kyle larson [Music] with a lap and a half to go larsen's going to open that door to the inside but austin's kind of running the middle of the track trying to keep as much momentum as possible i expected him to shoot the bottom and try that apron to try to get rolled up in the middle and side drafting the white flag waves one to go sponsored by credit one bank and around goes the 31 sliding down through the grass everybody may get through this he bounces off the wall they've taken the white we are still green larson with three tenths on dylan eric jones closing up for second can anybody catch kyle larson not today you're going to the bottom here watch jones the big run on the outside dylan on the bottom slides up right to the tail of the five here they come for the checkered flag kyle larson keeps that surfboard trophy in california man what a racing you can't really say enough about austin dolan uh jones and suarez i mean i don't think anybody would have picked those guys to be second third and fourth today necessarily all of them so uh man heck of a race elk grove california's 29 year old defending series champ kyle larson is going to victory lane for his 17th career win and his 11th with hendrick motorsports let's go back and watch the move he made to take the lead see daniel shores he had to lift right there to stay out of the wall as he was approaching out and man the run he had off the banking yeah he had such a big run that daniel couldn't even get to his right side to try to side draft him and austin dillon man being right there at the end he i thought he was going to give a run had a shot at it in in three and four i thought he was going to move down a little bit more than he did chevrolet sweeps the top four spots how about this kevin harvick eric almaro where did they come from top ten kurt busch from the back another top ten four chevys larson dylan jones suarez then three forwards logano almarola and harvick kurt busch is the highest finishing toyota in eighth after starting last daniel hamrick came from six laps down to finish ninth and ricky stenhouse top ten amazing job by those guys kurt didn't only start last he started last several times hamrick as you said made all those laps up got the top ten doesn't even run the series full-time and uh ricky stenhouse wrote in 10th day just a really really solid day for that team kyle busch got back on the lead lap just in time for the last restart and gained seven more spots finishes 14th behind teammates truex and ahead of teammate denny hamlin what can't this fella do with a race car yeah kyle's uh more than pretty good he is just an amazing talent we kind of always knew it and when he got in this car last year i think i think everybody knew that he was going to be the guy to beat and i really don't see that changing changing for some time to come really he started this race under penalty in the rear they changed an ignition part this morning that they found to be faulty during the morning fire up and warm-up and he comes to a halt on the front straightaway 281st career win for car owner rick hendrick here's reagan smith [Music] kyle larson climbing from the car saluting all its california fans kyle it doesn't matter to the car it doesn't matter the track you just get in it you go fast your second career victory at california speedway yeah thanks it's uh always fun here to win in the home state so um hard work all week in there uh didn't feel great in practice yesterday cliff and everybody made some good adjustments overnight and and the car handled a lot better um there was definitely some guys that were quicker than us but they had their misfortune so just kept our heads in it all day long race just restarts were crazy the whole runs were crazy so definitely wild but but cool to get a win here in california and hopefully get on a little streak kyle larson comes home to california and wins [Applause] what a performance one of several drivers who started at the rear either from qualifying spins or unapproved adjustments or penalties drove it to the front snatched the lead away from daniel suarez and raced his way to victory more to come from california after this [Music] about that fifth place uh you kyle larson in his hendrickcars.com chevrolet is the winner of the wise power 400 at auto club speedway he'll make his way to ruoff mortgage victory lane or he will join austin cendrick as this year's winners so far one of nascar's big goals for this car parody nine different organizations finished in the top ten today jamie daniel soros gave it a valiant effort was leading there with three laps to go i know you're dejected but what are the emotions knowing how close you came but coming up just a bit short we're gonna win a few races very soon here um i just can't thank everyone enough in my team you know we we have a fast car but we have we went through a lot of adversity you know uh we had a few issues we hit the wall once we had an issue with the diffuser my pick crew those guys are laying it's unbelievable it's the best pre-crew i ever had and uh it's a lot of fun to raid like that freeway insurance chevrolet everyone that helps trackhouse out to to be able to to be here and perform this way i'm happy and i'm horrible at the same time i can tell you that i'm going to work very very hard to to go to victory lane very very soon here thanks daniel mike well he had a great run here today so matt kenz the same question from the top of the day did you have fun i did have fun thanks a lot for having me it was a great race we got to see and enjoyed being up here we had fun having you hope you come back and visit sometime thank you the race i'm blown away man i tell you a lot of unknowns with this race car did it deliver was there some unknowns yes and yes but man the side-by-side race and the battles that i saw not only with these drivers within their car but the competition we saw blocks we saw everything today everybody up front back in the pack all over the place i liked it got some housekeeping to do right we got some flat tire issues that i don't like i want to address that and i know nascar is formulating a plan to do so so man i'm happy wild restarts a lot of passing great top to bottom moves and a great race well clint's going to hook up and drive through three states on the way to las vegas next week where we will see you then and you'll see the studio in charlotte right after this [Music] baby [Music] eyes on me [Music]
