hi this is Guy today I want to talk to you about how you can build a termite bait station out of an ordinary laundry detergent bottle that can completely eradicate an entire Subterranean termite colony in about 12 weeks as opposed to the almost two years that it could take with a commercial bait station I know it sounds unbelievable nevertheless this bait station will do just that the only thing is you need to use it correctly so the first thing I'm going to do today is show you how to build one of these things and then I'm going to take some time to show you how to use them to build one of these things you can use any sort of laundry detergent bottle that you like that is around 88 fluid ounces or about 2.6 liters start by removing the cap and then you need to remove the spout that is inside the bottle to do this simply take a screwdriver and wedge it between the edge of the bottle and the insert and then you should be able to pry it out fairly easily please note that some Brands make it almost impossible to do this so you may have to cut it out with the utility knife next you need to cut holes in the bottle the holes do not need to be very wide and I just kind of use my pinky as a guide to judge the width I have kind of wide fingers so I will make them just a little bit smaller than my pinky the end result is that you want an opening that is somewhere around 3 8 of an inch wide now the holes do not need to be perfect so you don't need to worry about lining them up or anything like that and the cut does not need to be terribly neat either you just need to get enough of an opening so the termites can get into the bottle I think the easiest way to do this is with a standard utility knife you want to cut two openings on the front of the bottle two openings on the back of the bottle and then one on the side of the bottle termites do not like light so I like to paint the inside of the cap black to block off as much light as possible this particular bottle has an orange cap which makes it easy to see when you're mowing the lawn if your bottle does not have an orange cap you may want to consider painting it Orange now that you have the bottle finished you need to make some bait for it to make the bait we're going to cut some cardboard that will fit neatly into the bottle please note that there is a grain to the cardboard so you want to cut along the grain from the bottom of the bottle almost all the way to the top of the bottle and you want to leave just a little bit of a gap where it reaches the top of the bottle by cutting along the grain it will make the cardboard easier to roll up after you cut the first sheet you can use that piece as a template to cut the rest of them now that you've cut the cardboard just roll it up with the grain and try to make it as tight as you can check to see if it fits snugly inside the bottle cap if it doesn't then add some more cardboard to it after it fits snugly in the cap then secure the roll with some duct tape next we need to make the cardboard lethal to termites to do that we're going to soak it in a tomato side you always want to use a tomato side that is a non-repellent and contains either fibranil or Imidacloprid as the active ingredient the one I like to use is Taurus SC if you're going to use this product then mix it at 0.8 ounces per gallon of water just place the cardboard cylinders in a shallow pan and pour in enough pesticide to cover the cylinders always wear gloves when you are doing this because you were going to be touching the Tomato side the cardboard tends to float so you may need to push it down a bit and roll it around to get the cardboard soaked all the way through it doesn't take long for the cardboard to soak through I find that it usually takes about five minutes now that the cardboard is soaked through then simply take it out of the Tomato side and insert it into the bait station and that's it you now have one bait station ready to go you are going to have some tomato side left in the pan so you can pre-make some more bait cylinders or you can put the remaining tomato side in a sealed container for use at a later time these bait stations are not like the ones you buy commercially because they use cardboard and cardboard does not last long when it is exposed to moisture in the ground therefore you cannot simply place these around your home as a preventative measure the stations are designed for the sole purpose of killing off an existing infestation so for them to be effective you need to know where the termites are you cannot simply place them around willy-nilly around the property any way you like therefore to locate the termites you need to install termite monitoring stations monitoring stations are different than bait stations because they do not kill termites they just locate them you can buy these commercially for about fifteen dollars each or you can make them yourself for about 50 cents each I have a video on how to make them and I will place a link in the description and at the end of this video I like to place the stations at four foot intervals around the entire building this way the termites cannot possibly miss them the monitoring stations have a little orange dot on the top when the dot disappears then you know you have termite activity in that monitoring station that is because the monitoring stations use wood to monitor the activity only subterranean termites will eat wood so when they eat the wood the little orange dots going to disappear thereby notifying you that there are termites in the station now that you know this activity there you simply install one of the bait stations next to the monitoring station that went off and you do not need to limit yourself to just one you can put two or three of these around the monitoring station that is having the activity another way that you can use these is if you see mud tubes on the side of the building or under the building in the crawl space where there is direct contact of the mud tube with the ground you simply install these directly in front of the mud tube with a bit of luck the termites are going to find it on their way to and from the mud tube the reason these things work is because subterranean termites never colonize in your home they always colonize in the ground and they must return to the ground fairly often to obtain the moisture they need to survive and to bring food back to the other termites in The Colony since these bait stations are providing them with an easy food source they will bring the contaminated food back to the Colony and share it with the other termites including the queen after enough bait has been distributed in The Colony all of the termites are going are going to die no more termites in The Colony then no more termites in your house either because they all must return to the ground that means there is no escaping for them if they take the bait then that colony is going to be toast to install the bait stations you can use a standard shovel or you can use a post hole digger just make sure that you leave the cap far enough out of the ground so that you can easily open it and replace the bait as needed that's pretty much all there is to it but remember the bait stations only work for subterranean termites they will not work for drywood termites and they are not recommended for any Subterranean species that have the ability to colonize in your home such as formosan termites also as with all bait stations there is no guarantee that the termites are going to go after the bait there is a very good chance that they will but you need to check to make sure okay that's it for me be well my friends and thank you so much for watching
