even God's presence can't you say Amen before passive pilgrim praise this evening order remind you that the needs in Houston are still great the Berean church is sitting or one of our large vehicles trucks down to Houston on on next week we delayed it a little while because of those storms in Atlanta earlier this week so tonight you are this morning you're overwhelmed with your giving but tonight if you came prepared to give these items Allyson Dozier our community service leader has receptacles in the lobby that is diapers of all sizes including adults non-perishable foods as canned goods cleaning supplies underwear female and male socks bedding which is sheets blankets and pillows the needs are great in Houston and they will be for quite some time but we are shrink wrapping all of our skits on this coming Friday that make sure we're able to take off a couple of days after that so if you're able to come by the church this week to be MLC across the street from the hours of 9:00 in the morning to 7:00 in the evening someone will be there to receive all your gifts we need to fill the truck to make sure that we're going to meet those huge or real needs in in Houston let's all stand as we pray together as fast the pilgrim leads us to the presence of God Lord and I Heavenly Father we come this evening to lift up your name God because you are great you are marvelous you are a wonderful father so Lord tonight as we lift up our voices and praise God Tabernacle with us and accept our worship Oh God we thank you for filling our hearts with joy and we're satisfied in you so Lord come tonight and help us experience you in a beautiful way bless pastor Phipps as he sings in Jesus name we pray amen just remain standing if you can it was so light ahead Gelber field answer of this evening the leaders in a one-song put your hands a little louder together the Gail let's just sing a hard time tonight gal is yours [Music] [Music] [Music] that you're all together [Music] Oh [Music] [Music] Oh [Applause] [Music] you may take you seriously here [Music] my god your own [Music] let the church say hey some years ago - oh quit the college Oh University now that was a young man who came to oak wood from Trinidad but by the way of Canada it was a phenomenal experience on on the campus at that time and because this was a rare talent that hit the campus little bit folk know at that point that what seemed to start adjusts the cubicle of Oakwood college at that time that that talent will go literally worldwide this past week one of my favorite newscasters in Washington DC when we lived there was Jim Vance Jim Vance was the main anchor for NBC for and I knew that pastor Phipps will be singing at the National Cathedral for Jim services but a experience of worship just broke out over the cathedral it was even coming through the screen as he ministered to the thousands of those who were in that massive National Cathedral at that time and it dawned on me as I heard and sing yet once again that the unique thing about this rare talent that God placed on this earth is that there is a real serious anointing of God's Spirit over his music and over his singing and as soon as he opens his mouth a time and time again it struck me and I've done domi that you sense an immediate presence of God that consumes the room tonight we're very delighted to welcome to this stage in the marine church a pastor wintley phipps who not only is a senior pastor the Palm Bay Church in Palm Bay Florida but the president of the u.s. Dream Academy but also of a former pastor of the Capitol Hill Church of the Seabrook Church in Washington DC area he is here for a very special reason not only the concert but he'll his wife Linda don't let me tell you why they're in town for this weekend but before we bring him on I introduced the love of his life Linda Phipps Linda would you stand tonight put your hands together and welcome Linda here tonight and I think two of the three boys are out here the night guys who just saying Whitney Waite would you all stand tonight and put your hands together I am feeling so old because I know these guys since there I'm also glad to recognize tonight one of my best friends in life I have known him my entire ministry he is a father in ministry and that is the awesome pastor Sinclair Phipps of a fifth of juice and tonight in the house put your hands together to this man and we served together in Allegheny East Conference and I followed him as a pastor in Akron Ohio some years ago dr. Phipps it is good to see you the night in this place well let's come to our feet and welcome to the stage pastor Whitley Phipps less than the welcome to Maradona praise the Lord praise the Lord Wow so many of you are here tonight praise God I tell you the truth dr. Sinclair hips praise the Lord I'm getting no advice over here dr. Phibbs is good to see you my friend and brother praise the Lord Julie god bless you so good to see everybody and I'm gonna start off with a prayer is that Alright ask God to come in and fill this else can copyright it amen praise God I want to thank you a pastor who is an awesome preacher and a wonderful man of God I thank him for this opportunity in his beautiful wife he and his beautiful wife been so gracious and and we are here because my oldest son went Lee the second is gonna be married tomorrow here in Atlanta and boy the Lord just worked it out that the hurricane came so we had to leave anyway really really live in Florida so we have to move and I guess move our staging area to Atlanta a little earlier and I guess y'all got a lot of folks in Florida came through and I see a lot of Florida tags and ours is one of them and thank God it wasn't as bad for at least for us this we thought and we thank God for that but I got to tell you a funny story I saw CNN interviewing a brother in the hood and they said what was it like during the hurricane he said well they told us we had to leave so we had to evaporate [Applause] nothing like my peoples nothing like my people we have two evaporates so I guess we're here because we have the evaporator a man I'm gonna do a couple of Negro spirituals and then I'm gonna take you down memory lane all right Thank You Lord in saying from Africa and let me say to you like this when the children of Israel were taken into slavery like the black folks were y'all didn't know that it they were taken just like we were they were taking the slaves into Babylon they said by the rivers of Babylon we sat we wept much like our forefathers did you can't imagine what it was like to be taken from Africa brought to this cold godforsaken place ice snow Virginia you cracked and they said we sat we wept when we remembered Zion when we remembered home and those who captured us required demanded that we sing where we said we can't say how can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land and then God one day showed me how amazing the african-american slave was when he was taken into slavery he didn't hang his harp he sang through his bondage and created the largest volume of music ever created by a race of slaves in slavery thousands and thousands of songs written by anonymous slaves names we will never know and the songs were powerful protests you heard that song and that was a protest when the master said y'all not going to heaven because of your color they saying he's got the whole world in his hands you understand and then can't read but yet profound swing low Sweet Chariot coming for to carry me home swing low sweet coming for to carry me home where the slave was saying there for that's chariot to come all the way from heaven and get me a slave it's gonna have to swing real love so swinging you coming for me you're gonna have to swing real low and guess what that's what all of us need to understand that we are slaves to and for God's charity to come get us is gonna have to swing really low to come get you and come get me and then they would put two and three back Bible stories in one song I loved it because cuz they couldn't read it was against the law to teach how to read so guess what they did they put let me say I can say it right I don't want to equate it to rapping but they would put Bible stories in prose and teach it little did they know as Ellen White says it's the most powerful way to teach anything put it in a song you will never forget it if you put it in a song do I have to go any of music in the places hmm where other slaves were brought to now watch what I'm about to saying do you know how many slaves were brought from Africa twelve million two million died in the passage of the ten million do you know how many made it to the United States of America 380,000 of the ten million five million went to Brazil the rest were spread out to the Caribbean Central America but the the spiritual the Negro spiritual didn't come from any other place but those 380,000 so what was it about the african-american slave that produced this kind of genius because it is genius it's beyond me beyond me but it's an inspiration to me and that's why I'm gonna keep singing them till Jesus comes oh yeah I want I don't want on generations to ever forget this jeans now I've had a crazy dream that I have been able to fulfill yet and it is that I'll set it up one day and maybe somebody's smart can help me so that you all will have yourselves microphones your cell phones and there will be a list of songs that I could do and you all will punch in what you'd like to hear and I'll it'll come up on my phone say okay let's do that that's not ready today though but we got something just as special and that is I'm not gonna look at my list I have no idea what song is coming next I just know it's gonna be an oldie but a goodie okay so you and I gonna get excited together because I don't don't give in he'll move your mountains I was preaching the other day about this church in West Virginia a member had donated some land to build a new sanctuary and they built a beautiful sanctuary and they were about to dedicate it when the state inspector came by and said they were not gonna be allowed to open the church because they didn't have enough parking and they didn't have enough parking because they had used up all the available land that was except for the mountain that was behind the church so the pastor call a pre-meeting says we're gonna pray I need some people with mountain-moving faith and the folks came together 25 of the 300 members showed up prayed for three hours after the prayer meeting the pastor said I just want to tell you I believe God will be true and we're gonna open on schedule next day the pastor was in his study big burly construction man came in with his hat took it off said pastor I'm from the Acme construction company and we're over in the next County building a large mall and we need some fill dirt would you be willing to sell us your mountain I said you'll pay will pave all exposed areas the only problem is we need it right away [Applause] anybody know he'll move your mountain oh yes he will oh yes he will I love the Lord I trust him you move your mountain when he believes in your dreams okay another good oldie but goodie and I said you just get over it when you know these songs you're you're not just a boomer your weight you owe your old so yeah yeah yeah yeah just just get over it you done you gettin all the discount voice and I can feel his presence that's how I love him I have in love with the law and since I was 16 years old I've been writing songs about God and God's love sing a song of sing it loud and clear somebody's singing that song sing it over the land so that the whole world could he have mercy y'all actually know that's the home I wasn't even 20 years old when I wrote this song and in 18 years 18 heart to be formed this way the seal listen when you call or is he even there at all but I know when my eyes fail to say he is a anybody believe he's able tonight you believe me say even though it these songs for his glory alone can I tell you I have a secret dream I guess when I tell you it won't be secret anymore that one day I will be in heaven working on my mansion with my holy hammer and I'll hear when I open it Jesus will be standing close and light crown a glory on his head and you'll say to me my son I'm about to go to some parts of my universe where they've never seen a child from Earth who has been redeemed and I want you to come go with me oh and by the way I want you to sing just before I speak that's my dream [Applause] oh can you imagine these that were you sing a song me Lord when you come into your kingdom this morning I spoke on some of the epiphanies in my life and one of the greatest epiphany I've had from studying the word this a scripture that says the scripture that says by one offering he has perfected those who are being sanctified did you hear what I did say by one offering he has perfected those who are being sanctified you know what that says in Christ through Christ covered by Christ the father sees you as perfect while you're being perfected [Applause] did you get that in Christ through Christ the father sees you when you covered by Jesus's robe of righteousness the father sees you as perfect while you're growing in grace praise His Holy Name now I've got to tell you something very important and then I'll signal few songs and got something I want to show you that I think will speak to your heart but the first thing I want to say is it's probably been a long time since you heard a man stand up and do a concert who sounds like a man [Applause] think about it just think about it a minute you think they just think about it a moment now I'm looking at some of you and I know you're old enough to remember names like off the price side anybody remember that name that lucky old son ain't got nothing to do but roll around heaven all day if you said those words with me you might also just get it or you know the music you see what what happened back in the 80's and 90's actually actually the 70s the music industry intentionally did not like the men who were men of color especially if they were bald but I'm talking names like Paul ropes one music one man and the music industry said we took y'all off the air because when we gave you a break you started talking back to us that's a quote too strong so they said well we know we're just so your children will never know what a man sounds like when a man sings there are no bass baritone hip hop singers do you understand and so I've been very lonely I'll tell all about myself because it's just there no men soloists and so while they got it so good so they took us off there well you you never find you don't hear that nah mom you all y'all know that y'all knew that [Applause] I didn't have to go no further y'all knew that you understand the point I'm making Barry why Isaac a view of men sounded like they intentionally took him off the air and so men like myself the only way we could make music it was not going to come from these men taking black men strong voices off the scene we had to find ways to finance our own records and our own music do you understand what I'm saying we so what I'm trying to tell you it is because of the generosity of people who say you know what that's the kind of voice I want to continue to hear and want people to continue to listen to and literally I've had people writing out checks thankful that a voice like the one God has given me is still singing [Applause] now I also must tell you that I've been less people from all walks of life have opened doors for me a lady gave me six hundred dollars one day to help me get in school a couple years later she called me back she said hey how's your album coming I said what album she said it she said what's the holdup I said it just cost so much money she said what's it gonna cost there's a a white Catholic lady she said what's it gonna cost I said oh my goodness at least $10,000 she said I'll give you $10,000 and this lady wrote out a check for $10,000 and that's how my music recording ministry began [Music] and I recorded this song I give you my life anybody okay that's that's how it started and so through the years people's generosity has kept me and now you know what it costs to make one wreck it is between 70 and 100 thousand dollars with that all all the music you've been listening to do you know you've been listening to the city orchestra of Prague the Prague Symphony Orchestra all those violins and horns everything you hearing is from the Czech Republic and God said to tell you what I'm working on now can I tell you what I'm working on now my next album it's in my head but it's more than in my head because last year let me tell you what it's about I'm gonna do a kind of musical celebration of the gospel coming to Africa listen to what I'm about to tell you did you know that Christianity was in Africa for almost a thousand years before Islam arrived in Africa did you know that did you know that the Khan conference that gathered together to decide the order of the New Testament books you know Matthew and Mark would follow Matthew and Luke and John that conference was held in Africa did you know that the first Christian missionary and that's what my album is about it's about the first Christian missionary to Africa he didn't come from the Americas he was the Ethiopian eunuch was the first Christian missionary to Africa he took the gospel to Africa and I had I'm putting together an album of music that celebrates the gospel being brought to Africa by the Ethiopian eunuch that's what I'm doing so my wife and I flew to South Africa and we recorded the background vocals oh my goodness with the you know just amazing vocals and we got to do the orchestra and all of that so that's why I came here tonight because I knew if you sung all my songs like you did you'd be so excited to help me finish my next record do you want to help me finish my next record wait is that applause serious I mean is it really serious who wants to help me fill it to finish my next record not with applause not with applause let me tell you how you can do it the pastor has been so kind made arrangements that if you write out a tax-deductible check to this church he will make sure that all the funds collected will come to our music ministry to help finish this next record would you like to do that now now it takes thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars yes if God is speaking to my heart somebody here has been blessed with a windfall you never expected and you were trying to think of what you were gonna do with it I want you to know should the Lord tarry 20 years from now somebody's gonna be sitting just like you singing the songs we're about to release it will it'll speak to them quite that way and so we're needing very generous gifts God said don't even tell you what to give just pray you can give as large a gift as you can as generous a gift as you can if you give a large gift somebody said and I love this story that one day I'm a preacher like myself was making an appeal for funds and while he was appealing he was sitting next an old black lady and she was looking at him he had his head down preachers appealing and he's he's just like he didn't know what he was gonna do if he was gonna do anything finally that little black lady leaned over to him and said son the Lord you serve is an honest God if you give him too much he give it back and can I ask you have you ever given $100 and can honestly say the Lord never gave it back have you ever given $200 and can honestly say I gave that money and the Lord never gave it back you can't because guess what he always gives it back anybody can testify to that raise your hand if you can testify to he always gives it back and it gives it back more than anything now and now we got I gotta deal with one quick thing and that is people don't walk around well people don't walk around with cash like they used to right people don't walk around with chicks like these somebodies I know some of you have so if you see an envelope in front of you just take a pencil write your name we'll get in touch with you say this is what I want to do and I want to and just we'll make sure that it comes through the church so that you could get a tax-deductible gift is that Alright and it may be a large gift I'll tell you one more giving story some of you know I run a ministry called the US Dream Academy we provide tutoring and mentoring after school to children whose parents are in prison all across America and we have about 40-something employees anybody got 40 something employees you know it takes a little bit to do that we have centers in Washington d.c Baltimore Philadelphia Houston Salt Lake City Indianapolis Orlando and we have to raise millions every year to do this work well 2008 was a rough year remember that the economy collapse we have a dinner where we raise about a million dollars at the dinner because of generous people like yourself and ten days before the dinner seven days before the dinner I was sitting at about 800,000 there people were generous to donate because guess what it only takes 880 people who give $1,000 to give a large gift you know so God is so good I was praying two days later because fundraising teaches you how to pray and it teaches you how to bake with dignity so I'm praying two days later my phone rings lady said missus wintley phipps I said yeah she said it was Oprah Winfrey's assistant she said Miss Winfrey just bought at a jet to South Africa and left a FedEx package to send to you where should I send it I said send it to the corporate office in Maryland she said well there's a special way she wants you to open it and so I send it to my home I got home my wife handed me this beautifully wrapped box with a handwritten note from her thanking me for my ministry thanking me from our ministry in her life for my prophetic words of wisdom because I've been encouraging her from when she was making twenty five thousand dollars a year I remember I said to her girl remember when we met you were making twenty five thousand dollars a year she said yeah Whitley and I still have my tithe stubs she was tithing on her $25,000 a year she said thank you for your ministry in my life and and I saw an envelope and I open it up that lady had put in a cheque for 1.2 million dollars and behind that envelope I saw another envelope dated January 1 2009 for the next year opened it up it had another cheque for 1.2 million dollars and behind that envelope was another open it I've had another check for 1.3 million else so she sent about four million dollars and three envelopes and then she called me from South Africa did you get it I said yes thank you so much and if she she emailed me and she said you know I love giving now I know why she has and we don't [Applause] she said I love giving and then she said I love making it fun then the Lord said he loves a cheerful Giver she said I considered sending you a FedEx envelope three days in succession so Monday you'll get the first check Tuesday the second check Wednesday the third check she said but I figured by the fourth day you'll be chasing the FedEx man so I kind of sent him all together but don't miss don't miss she's been blessed because she's been tithing and she's been giving something tells me if you make a decision to do something specific something spectacular gobbler blessed I know he will I'll tell you one more funny story I told her my executive director called me and said that second Chet I'm about to deposit it I said well no no no no don't put it in let me call Miss Winfrey so I called her and I said my executive director was gonna deposit that second check and I told her no no no don't put that in yet cuz okay I might call you and then you'd say to me oh yeah yeah don't put that in yet I get paid Friday some of us don't live all that never G and so the ushers are here to take your envelopes that you write I want to give this just get in touch with me and we'll make arrangements for the gifts that come through the church or someone just says you know I do have a hundred dollars in my pocket God said you take care of that you take care let's pray let's pray father you know this vision you've given me to celebrate the arrival of the gospel to the continent of Africa and you know what it's going to take to finish this project I ask that you would speak to someone's heart today who understands that a dollar here and a dollar there it's very difficult to do your work but if they are sacrificial and are generous you will hear from heaven and see and bless them just for their generosity and you'll replenish their gifts with more than they could ever imagine hallelujah god I love you thank you for taking care of us thank you that when we give you give when we give back you explain when I was 18 years old he came down to awkward to speak and I was a student and when they were introducing him reading his long list of accomplishments I noticed I'm 18 years old I noticed he was sitting in the chair with his head bowed with his eyes closed he was rocking patting his feet and when he got up to preach we call it the anointing today back then we didn't have a word for it anointing is a new thing in our lexicon but that man I can still remember the sermon say what you got back he was talking about Moses with that rod in his hand and the Lord said saying watch I got that and Moses said Lord is just a rod yeah is that all you think it is throw it down on the ground watch me make it live and then he said the Lord came to Chattanooga to us a lady to have three boys rambunctious hard-headed boys and the Lord said to that lady Cleveland boys the law said to his mother say what you got there said just three boys hard-headed boys look is that all you think it is give him to me give him to me and what the Lord has done with those men Agha Harrell Cleveland William Cleveland et so guess what when they would introduce me at the dorm to sing I put my head down my hand on that sin Pat my feet and I would rock like out of Cleveland because I figured his soaring probably had something to do with his pre-flight checklist whatever he was going through so I said I can do that I want to fly too so I close my eyes I rot little did I know that I was learning and entering into what would become the secret of all my success in ministry I was learning to go to the mountain before I went to the multitude so when I came down off the mountain my face was shiny my voice was shiny today we call it the anointing and we felt it here today his presence and then I would travel with him to do Crusades and one time on a crusade we had a private moment he said when lay he said I've learned how to pray every hour on the hour and I said Oh Lord how awesome is that so I'm 20 years old 23 years old and I'm trying to remember when the hour comes around to say a prayer like elder Cleveland so and it was hard you know to remember when the hours coming around so when people were buying these expensive watches I'd run out and I bought some cheap digital watches that would vibrate every hour on the hour and every time it vibrate it would remind me to pray little did I know after about three years of that vibrating on my own I was praying on the hour before the hour all in there and I was learning from elder Cleveland the power of secret unbroken communion with God I remember I did a interview with Oprah Winfrey not long ago and she asked me about my philosophy on prayer and I said you know when you go to the Symphony Orchestra you had these big grand passages and then you had a quiet interlude and go back to these big grand passages most of us see life as a symphony of activity punctuated by quiet moments for reflection meditation and then we go back the Lord said turn that around and see your life as a symphony of communion with God punctuated by distractions punctuated by distractions we're not when that phone rings it's a distraction from your communion with God you understand and when the distraction is over go back to the communion and so and then this is take me just a few minutes I was watching a report on 60 minutes did you know that the makers of cell phones and the software for cell phones before they make that those software for cell phones they study neuroscience and persuasive psychology there's a guy from Google who has left Google who's been telling spilling the beans they boast that they have learned and figured out how to use these to hijack your brain [Applause] intentionally dam hijacked my brain it's the first thing you check in the morning is the last thing you check in May I don't know if my son remembers we were doing some research how many times do people check huh people that people touch their phone thousands of times a day come on you can't go to the bathroom without it come on you know I'm telling you you sitting on yeah come on there's something called range anxiety range anxiety means if it's six inches from your hand you got to pull it in if it's in the next room you gotta go get it and bring it to you I had a young man who's at a Bible study where we live and he was testifying he said you know my wife and I were in the bed the other night and we were texting each other he said I text her are you in the mood and she texts me back No [Applause] that's the world we live in in y'all and so you know God gave me a term for it digital idolatry and it is the latest competitor for omnipresence it's got to always be on you look I'm here doing a concert is in my back pocket you understand so God gave me an epiphany a breakthrough idea and we've just built it you know how on your phone OOP you get a little CNN news alert whatever so we have built something called divine alerts so when you book it's a scripture every hour you can set it like Elder Cleveland taught me you can set it for every hour or you can set it for every two three whatever you want it whatever your frequency and you can get every hour a powerful quote from the desire of Ages from steps to Christ you can choose ministry of healing sanctified life or just I want to go through the Proverbs because Ellen White says there is power in our early communion with God so not only does it remind you to pray but it gives you something to pray about it speaks and the first one has just been released it's called Indian go on SDA divine alerts SDA you know what SDA stands for [Applause] because we need special alerts y'all we need special alerts right it's called SDA demand alerts I'm gonna ask them to put if you pull same messages on their cell phones said again Oh my sister she asked an amazing question am I going to be able to do it in other languages absolutely when I get the money no serious and and any of you interested I'll work with anybody who wants lessons the first language I want to get it in Spanish and I can show you how we lay it out I don't speak Spanish I'd like to but if anybody wants to work
