if you frown when you drink white wine subscribe to this YouTube channel and if you smile when you drink white wine subscribe to this YouTube I'm ray I'll from food & wine today we're gonna talk about French wine thinking about regions you're thinking about where this wine comes from first place it comes from its France second place in this case is Bordeaux and Bordeaux is not a type of wine Bordeaux is a region and the wine that and it produces a type of wine okay but don't people say like I'll have a Bordeaux absolutely they do the reason is that French wines and a lot of Italian wines are late are labeled by region instead of by grape varieties so when you get a US wine someone will say I'll have a Cabernet Sauvignon Bordeaux where this wine comes from and this is a red Bordeaux is actually the home of the world's greatest Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that's what goes into Bordeaux it is the original red blend oh the red blend yeah so everybody talks about red blends being this new thing they've been doing in Bordeaux for hundreds and hundreds of years and that's a mix of grapes and that is a mix of grapes from the region of Bordeaux red wine they make white wine there but we're just dealing with the red cuz it's most of what is made of Bordeaux and it's what people think of as being famous if you want to learn to swirl wine do it on table oh no you're less likely they're flinging it on to me okay if you really want to taste wine this is what you do store sniff sip and then you slurp so gonna spill out I did wear this shirt in case I spilled well done you know that shirt it's kind of Bordeaux in color is it thank you so it's my roommate so first question when you're tasting wine a most important thing do you like it it's great good thanks I mean it's um sometimes when you finish drinking your mouth feels like paper tannins in red wine tannins tannins come from the skins of the grapes okay they give red wine structure they make it something other than fruit juice next region remember these regions right so burgundy it is smaller than Bordeaux doesn't produce as much wine the key thing though is it produces both great white and great red wines and the key thing to know beyond that is that when we talk about white Burgundy we talk about red burgundy we're really primarily talking about Chardonnay are they like teams or people who like go Bordeaux or like they're pretty they're pretty you know the border leh are pretty fond de Bordeaux the the Burgundians are pretty fond of Burgundy and if you go to a restaurant in Burgundy you will not find much Bordeaux on that list it's it's Europe they stopped having wars about this stuff but they still you know have rivalries right okay and this is actually white Burgundy from Shibley which is a sub zone of Burgundy so when you think when we talking about these regions right the wine comes from the universe within the universe Milky Way way our solar system within our solar system earth with earth France that seems fair right yes let's leave out Europe just France within France Burgundy within burgundy Shepley all we really want to know is that this is a form of white Burgundy and therefore it's made from the Chardonnay grape and when you smell it and you spin you swirl the Reds or the whites as well swirl them both okay and you swirl throughout that you know when people drink and then they're still like that usually means they like wine too much and they've started to become one of those people who swirls everything and if you do start to geek out online you'll start swirling everything do you do this even if you don't have a glass in your hand I've been doing it so long that I've stopped swirling everything oh I've come out the other side oh my god yeah I can also do things like swirl above my head and stuff it's very exciting oh that is very impressive you're catching almost to wearing it but not quite I look like the Statue of Liberty to me it smells a little bit like green apples okay to me it smells like my mother's breath as a child you know she liked apples maybe what do you notice about this compared to the bread board oh we had Tangier it's sour it's more tangy okay when you take another sip your mouth adjust to the acidity and it doesn't seem as Cu okay it doesn't seem as crazily tart the next time when I drink it I frown and I can't help it it's interesting I don't know this is scientific prediction here I believe the reason you frown when you drink white wine is not because you're strange it is in fact your normal it think it's a reaction to the acidity I think it makes you you do that either it's possible it's also possible you just don't like it what do you what are you grinning about when you drink it that's a good question I feel like I'm the one that makes me grin I think we will can you play slap a bag with bottles simply slap the bag I have no idea what you're talking about someone holds the bladder to your mouth yeah it's like a reverse keg stand yeah mmm no white Burgundy yes Chardonnay red Burgundy yeah it's the same region they plant both white and red grapes Pinot Noir it's more delicate in flavor than the Bordeaux it seems to have a little bit of a spice note to it if you smell it it just smells like bad memories lighter in body than them in the Bordeaux more delicate in flavor it feels like a lit match is that's bad yeah it's like a burn in the back situation pepper could be a pepperiness there's often a little pepperiness in Pinot Noir really it's also possible you simply don't like Pinot Noir there's basically one family of grapes vidis vinifera that's the the sounds like a Harry Potter spell it does if you say that to people and they turn into wine okay within that world there's Cabernet Sauvignon so be on Blanc Merlot Pinot Noir Syrah Gamay all these different grape varieties are all within that big family and people can eat these grapes you can eat the grapes you can have plebes grapes yeah just a poem right off the vine wine grapes actually tend to be when they're right they're very sweet really yeah you're ready for the third region oh my god the Loire Valley which is more or less it's on the Atlantic coast but it's quite big it goes in from the local Falls the river in from the Atlantic coast north of Bordeaux and west of Paris crucial grape to know when or if you're going to know anything is Savion blanc this region within the law or the wine we're having is from a region called Sancerre Savion blog often has a synth that requires server calls grapefruit can be a little flim P can be green peppery if you've had some New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc it's it's super great fruity and super green peppery sometimes you can take a sit okay sip time yep citrusy dingy it doesn't make me frown it doesn't make you frown no that's a good sign I'm smiling you obviously like Loire Valley Savion blowing it was five years this is a groupie yeah it was very smooth is that it was like not bitter not too bitter it didn't set my throat on fire I think this has that just perfect balance like you said it's not it's not too citrusy it's not too tart it makes you want to take another sip is it smell different the more you drink it or is that just a meat thing no it does it's actually as that's the whole swirling thing but also as it sits in the glass you get the oxygen is interacting with the wine a big part of wine is aroma a big part of flavor is a robot for instance hold your toes okay take a sip of this wine tastes kind of like eliminating water right let go of your nose and takes it much more flavor Wow am i right yeah okay I think I came across a video so cool but it's like going from black and white to color it's cuz you can smell our fourth region so here we go to the Rhone Valley okay and the Rhone Valley is in the South of France um kind of on the Mediterranean Sea ignore my song it's some remember we're talking universe world frantic Rhone Valley okay and then the Rhone Valley is divided in two regions northern Rhone southern Rhone pretty simple okay and the northern Rhone is primarily known for sarong the red grape Syrah and the southern Rhone is primarily known for Grenache this wine CROs Armitage is made from Syrah now there you go you're doing well sniff sniff little peppery is that bad smell I think that is pepper okay so that to me is like a little bit of white pepper gross it smells like white doesn't like we've determined by talking to the producer that the wine smells like wine I say the wine smells like pepper what kind of pepper gross - it smells like a bag of jerky bingo pepper jerky and and actually cured meat is a common descriptor for Syrah Wow but like if this smells a little bit like peppered cured meat you take it let's take a sip okay have you done it yet sweet fruit sweet fruit yeah well it tastes it's not actually there's no sugar but it tastes riper than the Bordeaux and then certainly than the Pinot Noir it's time for champagne yeah this is our last region and champagne is a region it's a region is a region in France and champagne is the wine that comes from the region of champagne the truth is the only thing that is actually champagne comes from champagne in France everything else is sparkling white wine during wine Andre is sparkling Andre is a little weird because I think they're actually grandfathered in and they can use the term champagne really I like Andre because it was dumb two four six in my college town that is um often why people like things in college down yeah really exciting so this is not two four six actual champagne is gonna run you like 35 bucks my goodness this is probably more like 45 this per makes me really okay that was what that party exceeded what makes you what I am I thought that was gonna be that was very pro champagne is the last region that you really absolutely have to know in France there are other regions there are plenty of other regions and trance and it's great fun to learn about them all but if you learn these few you will cover a whole lot of bases really well I don't think I've ever had champagne you've never had champagne I don't think so umm oh I come from a Prosecco family you can smell it you'll get a little bit of a like a sharpness and you're in your nose from the co2 carbon dioxide and again you get a little bit of green apple a little bit of sort of a sweet lemon note smells like the cleaner at my preschool I think was like a citrus citrus citrus cleaner that would make sense yeah typically champagnes a blend of three grape varieties Chardonnay which we had yes Pinot Noir to get to that a second and Pinot Meunier when you get grapes even if you have a red grape you cut it open the flesh of the grape is pale green what you do when you make champagne is you take you take Pinot Noir grapes you crush the juice out of them but you get rid of the skin so it never turns red oh my god yeah so this actually has red grapes in it it's good yeah it is isn't it champagne is good I didn't know I definitely makes you smile it does but see now you know three things you really like hmm you like champagne you like Sancerre and you like Bordeaux cool so now Halle knows everything she needs to know about French wine she knows some of her favorites you guys know everything there is to know about well six French regions five French regions however many French regions are covered yeah five five but there are more than that six there a point there there's so many yeah so many but you don't need to know them all then you know what kind of couple kinds of wine you like champagne is good and Bordeaux is good and Pinot Noir sucks so I mean that's sort of what I learned if you have French wines you love we'd love to hear about it if you have French wines you don't love you don't love Pinot Noir from Burgundy apparently but you do love sunset anyway we would like to know so please comment say whatever you like and if you have questions about French wine we'd love to answer them go forth try some French wines and cheers everyone you killed it you drank it all bad that's what we like to see
