yo dawg i heard you like car shows in the early 2000 so we made you a car show on car shows on a channel with car shows X to the Z exhibit let's do it let me set the scene for you it was the early 2000s george w bush the famous painter was president Chingy was on TRL and you literally couldn't look through the channels without seeing dozens of car shows playing at the same time there are a bunch of build and restomod shows on right now but not many of them where they make crazy cars with kookie dollar room what happened in the early 2000s that spawned all of these goofy build shows this week's episode of wheelhouse is brought to you by mass energy drink I was feeling pretty tired before filming this episode so I cracked open one of these bad boys and now listen you didn't actually see me before so you'll just have to trust me I was a nightmare [Music] look a lot of times this show can get a little heavy with flaws and omission stuffs and if I have to explain the chicken tax one more time I'm gonna stab myself in the foot just to feel something so for this episode we're gonna keep it light and nostalgic and talk about some of the more memorable cars on these weird shows Dave billion 2004 this iconic show hosted by my boy X to the Z exhibit to clapped-out daily drivers and turn them into nearly undriveable plastic covered clapped-out Paley drivers remember the theme song it's burned into my memory for all eternity so you want to be a player which will be a flag and you've got a hit us up for pimp down ride Oh told you this show kicked so much ass I probably watched every single episode ex would show up to your house and roast your car to your face for what seemed like a little too long you know that was probably his favorite part of this job right then he would drive your car over to West Coast Customs Mad Mike would make bad puns and exhibits reactions were completely genuine and it seemed clearly only thing you have to do concentrate concentrate they even had a spiky hair dude that did the tires I think I'm not really sure what his role was but his hair was cool there are too many good episodes to mention but I especially loved the one where they installed a million speakers in this dude's old Wonderbread truck including two 22-inch jackhammer subwoofers re-watching this episode made me nervous because they cranked up the sound system and this guy puts his head right next to the speaker at a hundred thirty decibels hot tip for me don't do that it doesn't really make you look cool and you'll definitely lose him hearing another cool part of the show is that they would integrate some of your personality into the bill for example there is a guy who like gambling so much that they turned his van into a casino it had a tiny baby grand piano in it a ridiculous slot machine mechanism that opened up the side door and maybe the worst part cards that shot out of the exhaust yes that's what I want a deck of cards coming out of my exhaust thank you exhibit my favorite part of this episode is when Mad Mike says that's a bat we heard the dog crapped on the floor yeah we hooked you up with a different kind of crap on your floor a lot of things they did I'm PIN my ride were pretty unnecessary okay there's a blazer episode really put seven-inch TV screens on the mudflats they put a popcorn maker in this poor woman's Chevy Cavalier and a waterfall and a guy's Caravan look I'm all for practical mods I would love to have a licorice dispenser in my car like Wayne's World but these kinds of things I'm like bro how long have you spent putting a robotic arm in this piece of junk there was one episode where Mad Mike reveals a snow cone maker they put in the back of his loins car like this dude just spent months literally months making this thing work and you're just gonna laugh in his face X I love you apparently MTV and West Coast Customs took a bunch of the features off the cars right after filming and some of the devices never worked in the first place come on Wayne the show made it seem like the transformations took less than a week but in reality they had the cars for much longer Justin said in his reddit AMA that West Coast Customs worked on his car for five months who turns out that a lot of the show was you guessed it fake even down to the houses that exhibit showed up to I mean the houses they were real obviously but they were rented for filming test ins will be sent to these rental houses and wait for exhibit to come and surprise them the submission videos the contestants supposedly sent in were done at that rental house after they had already been chosen the real bummer is that MTV and West Coast Customs didn't fix anything mechanically wrong with the cars as Justin said in his AMA it was all Mickey Mouse cosmetic existing mechanical problems with the car were left untouched and the focus was mainly on making the cars look good for the cameras but hey it wasn't all negative okay one contestant had a car that was two different Ford escorts welded together in the middle and it was apparently so janky and unsafe that West Coast Customs they're like we can't touch this that's a liability and then his bottom a new Scion xB that's pretty cool with them also all contestants loved exhibit I mean no surprise there I love him too Justin said he was cool and smelled like weed it does not surprise me at all that I smelled like weed exhibit if you see this please come by donut I want to hang out with you we'll buy a lunch like this show was so instrumental in becoming a car guy even though looking back it's super hokey and really disappointing to learn that they didn't fix the mechanical stuff but like watching that as a kid those are the kind of things that get you interested in modifying cars it's like man I can't wait from my car to have a snow cone machine in it oh who can forget after your car was pimped I don't know how they came up with this but exhibit just plucked you on the shoulder and says he's officially been pimped and that's kind of the best part of the show you've officially been to one of my favorite shows was Monster Garage you remember this one right the theme song was just that for a minute and that early 2000 cgi intro that nature probably cost them a hundred thousand dollars back then Monster Garage ran from 2002 to 2006 and featured Jesse James as a host I liked him because it seemed like you didn't give us nowadays I know he's a little problematic but back then I thought he was a badass jesse led a team of five engineers fabrication experts and mechanics to build a car that performed a specific task and if they failed to make the car do what it needed to do within a week whoo boy you know what happened got crushed they had a lot of less than stellar episodes like when they made a steady machine and a salvaged Ferrari that one didn't m14 plus what boring what's the watch that they also put a wood chipper and a PT Cruiser that one did work but it didn't make any sense this is Hollywood guys trying to think of something that's cool that really ain't there's this purple 1988 blazer that they tend to do at Pikes Peak Hill Climb er that's awesome the team dropped a 355 vortex supercharged v8 in it and made over 600 horsepower and it went up in Pikes Peak with relative ease bonus points to the number 69 nice there was also an episode where they pulled a VW Beetle out of a swamp and turned it into a 9 second quarter mile car that's awesome there was the drama of trying to come in under budget but that was always such a joke like they would have a $5,000 budget but get 20,000 in parts for free whoop almost well over budget there yeah nice that was close if the contestants won which meant that their vehicle performed a predetermined task they would win a pretty sick set of tools and a monster garage CD you know what you can keep the tools give me that CD they made a monster Garage video game for Xbox that actually looks pretty fun you get an assignment you assemble your own team of experts order the parts even do welding and stuff and we can't forget the Monster Garage spin-off Monster House this is a real show I totally forgot about this thing until someone that donut reminded me about it putting dump on a car is one thing but destroying someone's house with Kuki is next level if you were one of the lucky kids that got Speed Channel then you might remember this show unique whips in this show they took celebrities cars and customize them with extravagant paint jobs custom upholstery wheels and usually some other gaudy features that people thought look classy in the mid-2000s producers of the show didn't need to thank the drama because owner will Castro supplied a steady stream of that all on his own you might remember one of the most intense episodes of the shop manager Remy walks out after getting in a fight with Castro it sucks cuz Remy was actually one of the more talented members of the shop some of them are memorable episodes were P Doody's Jeep Wrangler 50 Cent's g8 I mean this show really had some decent cars in it and the craftsmanship seemed like it was really good because some of the stuff was so gaudy I think it got a lot of flack the show but overall is still really good and going back and watching some of the episodes it's pretty cool this show is a little classier than pimp my ride or Monster Garage but it still fell into that reality show trope of needing tons of drama my whole love of cars started when I was a kid my dad and I would watch shows like Monster Garage unique whips and of course pimp my ride and we would talk about how dumb it would be to have a fireplace in the backseat of your car but that was part of why I enjoyed the show so much you can watch them with anyone and then rip on the cars the early 2000s was a super weird time for car shows cable channels like MTV and Discovery could afford to bankroll all these massive projects but eventually people lost interest in crazy bills nowadays with the rise of social media DIY projects are far and above the most popular but don't worry there are still plenty of build shows geared towards old guys like rust Valley restores which I have to admit is pretty entertaining maybe I am an old guy after all before signing off I'd like to tell you that you've officially been pimped you probably watched trick my truck on CMT I just don't know if a lot of people watched it because it was on CMT it was on right after country-fried Home Videos and then Reba was on afterwards so that's kind of a weird but you know I took whatever car shows I could get be nice see you next time
