The Towney episodes are some of my favorites. Keep beach city weird!
I already knew most of that. Although the specials being mandated by the network makes a lot of sense.
He expects me to watch his 30 minute long rant and begins by whining about "towney" episodes. He lost me right there. But I kept watching just in case.
He claims that he's basing this off interviews and End of an Era. But 6 minutes through he kept repeating the same argument "Cartoon Network wanted an episodic show" over and over again. But he doesn't back it up. So far the only thing he showed from End of an Era or Interviews is a small except on which Rebecca says this is the first time she'll be able to tell the whole story. And ... that's it.
Adventure time's latest seasons were running with quite an overlap with SU's first 4 seasons. In adventure time the status quo changes quite a bit and I'd say CN were quite aware that AT was a huge success. Bismuth becoming a regular doesn't seem way harder to do than incorporating Flame Princess or Betty into the regular cast. If someone watches a random season 1 episode followed by a season 7 episode, they would have tons of questions regarding Ice King.
And what's interesting is that CN ordered SU because they wanted something like AT. That's why they had Rebbeca leading it. I remember the original advertisements, they focused on the AT DNA quite a bit. The Pilot even had AT's art style. So it sounds weird to me that they'd be shocked to find out that SU is not episodic.
And then we have the other issue with the argument, and it is that the Human episodes aren't that episodic either? There are quite a few status quo shake ups in Beach City. Sadie quits her job. Lars is abducted. Oddly enough, Jamie becomes a habitual cast member at one point. Mayor Dewey stops being the Mayor. And well... just have to say: Sadie Killer and the Suspects.
So I get that this guy hates the town episodes and I am inclined to agree that CN did this show dirty. But I don't think it had much to do with "Episodic versus with plot". CN's scheduling really hurt the show. We know that, the video is just seemingly rushing to conclusions explaining why.
